Compulsory citywide garbage sorting began in Beijing in April, aided by new guidelines for residents and the start of a three-month inspection campaign to monitor enforcement. The strict garbage sorting rules require residents to classify their domestic trash into four different categories: kitchen waste, recyclables, hazardous waste and other waste. 1.

Communities and villages across the capital must set up four different colored trash bins. 2. To help residents better classify their domestic trash, four supporting measures would specify the management standards and implementation procedures for classifying garbage. For example, a guideline released in April advised residents to have two trash bins and one garbage bag at home to make the separation of different kinds of waste more convenient.

3. The inspection, lasting until the end of July, will focus on mixed waste and its dumping and transport. Meanwhile, the city's market supervision authorities will begin a three-month crackdown on the illegal use and sale of plastic bags.

Under the newly revised domestic waste regulation, supermarkets, shopping malls and trade markets may no longer use super thin or free plastic bags. 4.

By the end of March, there were 44 domestic waste treatment facilities in Beijing, capable of handling 32,711 metric tons of trash a day, the capital's urban management authorities said. The capital collected 10.11 million tons of household waste last year.

Some residential communities in Beijing have introduced incentives(激励)to encourage residents to sort their garbage. 5. Some communities had explored new ways of reusing kitchen waste as fertilizer for the residents' rooftop garden.

A.Law enforcement agencies will launch a three-month inspection to monitor compliance with compulsory trash sorting.

B.Those who fail to sort their garbage properly could face fines of up to 200 yuan $28.

C.The community acquired a trash treatment machine last year that can recycle some kitchen waste to produce organic soil in 24 hours as fertilizer for potted plants.

D.Restaurants and hotels must stop offering disposable items unless customers request them.

E.Residents can earn points by classifying their domestic waste correctly and then exchange the points they accumulate for daily necessities such as napkins and soap.

F.The treatment facility makes residents more familiar with the processing of garbage and spur their enthusiasm for trash sorting.

G.Green bins will be for kitchen waste, blue ones for recyclables, red for hazardous waste and gray for other waste.

The cancer death rate in the U.S. fell by the most on record as advances in treatments for lung tumors (肿瘤) like video-assisted surgery helped prolong the lives of patients.

The death rate from cancer has been gradually declining for 26 years, thanks in large part to fewer people smoking cigarettes. But from 2016 to 2017, the most recent period available, it dropped by 2.2%, the most ever in a single year, according to a report released Wednesday by the American Cancer Society. That compares with an average 1.5% yearly decline over the decade. The drop translates to roughly 2.9 million fewer cancer deaths than would have occurred had death rates remained at their peak. For lung cancer specifically, the death rate declined 4.3% annually from 2013 to 2017.

"It is really lung cancer that is driving this," said Rebecca Siegel, scientific director of surveillance research at the American Cancer Society, and lead author on the new study. "We found increases in survival for lung cancer at every stage in diagnosis.”, She attributed the lower deaths to improvements in treatments, including video-assisted surgery that enables more patients with early lung tumors to become eligible for operations; more precise radiation treatment; and better scanning technology that allows doctors to better assess the stage of tumor, so the patient gets the best treatment right away. At later stages of illness, new, targeted drugs that aim at specific disease-causing genes are helping patients whose tumors have those genetic flaws (缺陷).Overall, lung cancer death rates have dropped by 51% for men since their peak in 1990, and by 26% for women since their peak in 2002.

There's the potential for more progress in future reports. That's because the latest death-rate statistics go only through 2017, and likely don't include the potential impact in lung cancer death from immune-therapy drugs. They became widely used in lung cancer only in the past few years.

The report, based on U.S. government data, isn't all good news. Prostate (前列腺)cancer death rates have leveled off recently after a period of decline. That may be because many doctors pulled back on using the controversial prostate-specific antigen test, or PSA, which can spot the disease but can lead to over-treatment of men who may never have                        died from their tumors.

"Though it was definitely causing harm, it was also contributing to declines in death," Siegel said. What's needed now is better screening tests to detect only the prostate cancers that will go on to cause harm.

Population death rates are considered one of the most reliable ways of measuring progress in cancer treatment and prevention. By contrast, cancer survival rates can sometimes be influenced by improvements in diagnosing tiny, early stage tumors that wouldn't necessarily be deadly.

Traveler

My fifteen-year-old son has just returned from abroad with rolls of exposed film and a hundred dollars in uncashed traveler’s checks, and is asleep at the momentHis blue duffel(粗呢) bag lies on the floor where he dropped itObviously, he postponed as much sleep as he could: when he walked in and we hugged, his electrical system suddenly switched off, and he headed directly for the bed, where I imagine he beat his old record of sixteen hours.

It was his first trip overseas, so weeks before it, I pressed travel books on him, and a tape cassette of useful French phrases; drew up a list of people to visit; advised him on clothing and other thingsAt the luggage store where we went to buy him a suitcase, he headed for the duffels, saying that suitcases were more for old people

During the trip, he called home three times: from London, Paris, and a village named UllapoolNear Ullapool, he climbed a mountain in a rainstorm that almost blew him offIn the village, a man spoke to him in Gaelic, and, too polite to interrupt, my son listened to him for ten or fifteen minutes, trying to nod in the right placesThe French he learned from the cassette didn’t hold water in ParisThe French he talked to shrugged and walked on.

When my son called, I sat down at the kitchen table and leaned forward and hung on every word His voice came through clearly, though two of the calls were like ship-to-shore communicationWhen I interrupted him with a “Great!” or a “Really?”, I knocked a little hole in his communicationSo I just sat and listened I have never listened to a telephone so attentively and with so much pleasureIt was wonderful to hear news from him that was so new to meIn my book, he was the first man to land on the moon, and I knew that I had no advice to give him and that what I had already given was probably not much help.

The unused checks are certainly evidence of thatYouth travels lightNo suitcase, not much luggage and a slim expense account, and yet he went to the scene, and came back safelyI sit here amazedThe night when your child returns with dust on his shoes from a country you’ve never seen is a night you would gladly turn into a week

1.During the trip, the author’s son ______.

A.ran out of money

A.It is important to listen to your child’s story.

B.It’s easy to interrupt the chat with your child.

C.The author is proud of her son landing on the moon.

D.The son no longer needs much help from his mother.

4.What can we infer from the passage?

A.Good parents should protect their children from potential dangers.

B.The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.

D.Communication between parents and children is extremely important.

Video chat is now the go-to outlet for many social distancers longing for social interaction. But having a successful fete isn't only a question of hopping on camera with friends and kicking off. Social grace is a big part of a successful virtual party — and etiquette doesn't go out the door just because you're in your pajamas in front of a camera.

Introduce everyone to the group

Gone are the days during which you can introduce yourself to new people at your leisure. Instead, the second you click 'Join Meeting', you're pushed in front of potentially dozens of faces staring straight at you.

This is particularly problematic if not everyone on the call knows each other — Zoom itself recommends short ice-breaking sessions for everyone to introduce themselves on meetings.

"I like to use the wait room," says Tamiko Zablith, founder of Minding Manners International. "For security reasons, it means outsiders don't come crashing into your meeting. But also, you can let people come in one at a time, and then you can take that time to introduce them to the group as well."

Learn the art of the pause

Another wildly confusing thing about Zoom parties: everyone has to talk one at a time. There's no chance for small groups to organically form, for joking talk to fill a room, or for guests to talk at the same time. The whole group, no matter how large, can only listen to one person at a time.

That's why putting pauses in your speech is critical, especially since low internet speeds or weird audio may mean it's easy for someone to talk over someone else, drowning out what they have to say to the group.

"If the internet is a bit unreliable, you have those unstable signals. If I keep rambling, and the other person starts, there's that delay," says Zablith. "Work those pauses into your conversation."

Know when to change backgrounds

Using Zoom's backgrounds can actually be a courtesy to eliminate distractions behind you.

Hiding those dirty dishes or pizza boxes, or obscuring other members of the household coming and going, eliminates distractions and makes the other people feel like they're getting your full attention.

"Wouldn't it be better if that distraction just wasn't there?" Zablith says, pointing to the advantage of virtual backgrounds being able to hide anything unsightly behind you. For others, virtual backgrounds also provide a sense of comfort or normalcy to the audience.

1.According to the passage, which of the following is considered impolite?

A.To introduce everyone individually to the group.

B.To use virtual backgrounds to avoid distraction.

C.To put several pauses in your online speech.

D.To keep silent when joining in the meeting.

2.According to Tamiko Zablith, ______.

A.Internet speed matters little in Zoom parties

B.the wait room makes it easy to introduce everybody

C.for some, real room background has a comforting effect

D.pauses in speaker's conversation may delay the conference

3.What is the purpose of the passage?

A.To attract more people to use Zoom.

B.To explain how to maintain social manners.

C.To offer guidance on Zoom social etiquette.

D.To compare online meetings with offline ones.

For or Against?—That Is the Question

Andy is the most unreasonable and he makes me so angry that I could even scream sometimes! Of course, I sort of have to love him because he is my twin brother. Andy and Amy that is me have the same curly hair and dark eyes and are equally stubborn. Yet, on most issues we usually take opposite positions.

Just this week in our school, there was a heated discussion on whether to adopt a school dress code. Every student would be required to wear a uniform. The teachers are divided: Some are in favor of the uniforms while others are opposed. The principal has asked the students to express their opinions by voting on the issue before decisions are made. But she will have the final word on the dress code.

I think a dress code is a good idea. The reason is simple. The less I have to decide first thing in the morning, the better. I can't tell you how many mornings I look into my closet and just stare, unable to decide what to wear.

Andy is shocked at my opinion. Last night, he even dragged out my parents' high school photo albums to show me how brilliant they looked without uniforms! He also declared, "Bruce Springsteen never wore a school uniform. Bob Dylan wouldn't have been caught dead in a school uniform! Besides, when I am feeling political, I want to be able to wear clothes made of natural, undyed fibers, sewn or assembled in countries that do not pollute the environment or exploit child labor. If I have to wear a uniform, I won't feel like me!"

To that I replied, "So your personal heroes didn't wear school uniforms. But they went to high school about a million years ago! I feel sorry for you since I had no idea that your ego(自我)is so fragile that it would be completely destroyed by a uniform." That really made him angry and he shouted, "You're just copying what you hear that new music teacher saying because you are crazy about him!"

Fortunately, the bell rang before we could do each other physical harm, and we went to our separate classes. The vote for or against uniforms took place later that day. The results of the vote and the principal's decision will be announced next week. I wonder what it will be. I know how I voted, and I'm pretty sure I know how Andy voted. How would you vote---for or against?

1.Amy and Andy often get angry with each other because ______ .

A.they're both stubborn B.they like different teachers

C.they always hold different views D.they don't like each other very much

2.Amy holds the idea that ______.

A.school clothing should reflect parents' values

B.teenagers should never follow the latest clothing fashion

C.the way one dresses should be an expression of one's personality

D.wearing school uniforms means one makes less decision every morning

3.Who will decide whether the students should wear uniforms?

A.The principal. B.Their parents.

C.Their teachers. D.Students themselves.

4.In Paragraph 5, Amy aims to say that ______.

A.Andy shouldn't look up to his heroes so much

B.our clothes should decide people's attitudes towards us

C.Andy's lack of self-confidence is reflected in his clothing

D.our clothes shouldn't determine how we feel about ourselves

It’s been a long vacation. Last month, my aunt and uncle returned work, so they needed someone to look after their child. I offered to give them the hand. I had thought I was able to do that but things turned out so differently.

First, they fought from time to time but I couldn't stop from it. Then, the mess they made really annoys me. At lunchtime, I was busy preparing food while screaming to stop them beating each other. I wished I have not made that crazy offer. To her great relief, my grandma came that afternoon, which meant that finally I was able to go home—after cleaning up the garbage everywhere and collected the toys on the floor. How a busy day!

You may have come across the picture that has a number drawn on the floor with two people standing on either side of the number. One person sees a 6, and the other sees a 9.1.

They could either stay there arguing and holding on to their ideas, or they could move around and see the difference in their thoughts. This is perspective (视角).

2.The world would be a better place if people understood this. But before you start thinking of how you can start seeing things from the perspective of another person, you need to first know what a life perspective is.

Just like the example, life perspective is the way we see life, including the way we approach life and all that are in our personal experience. 3. What we usually have are two different perspectives on one thing. We have a person saying something is bad and should not be done, and then we have another person saying that “bad” is a strong word to use for the same thing.

4.And everyone sees things a lot differently compared to the next person. This makes life more complex because, instead of seeing the similarities we share, we often focus on what is different, which leads to disagreements and fights.5.It's likely that these problems no longer annoy you.

A.There are more than 7 billion people in the world.

B.In our life, few things are absolutely right or wrong.

C.It seems difficult to decide which perspective is wrong.

D.Simply make a switch and see from a different perspective.

E.A perspective on life can be shaped, changed, or explained.

F.They are both right, yet they are wrong in the eyes of the other person.

G.And they usually make us believe that we are the one who s holding the truth.

In 1926, US automaker Henry Ford shortened its employees' workweek from six eight-hour days to five, with no pay cuts. It's something workers and labor unions had been calling for. Ford wasn't responding to worker demands he was being a businessman. He expected increased productivity and knew workers with more time and money would buy and use the products they were making.  It was a way of encouraging consumerism and productivity to increase profits, and it succeeded.

Since standardization of the 40-hour workweek in the mid-20th century, everything has changed but the hours. If anything, many people are working even longer hours, especially in North America. This has a severe influence on human health and well-being, as well as the environment. Until the Second World War, it was common for one person in a family, usually the oldest male, to work full-time. Now, women make up 42 percent of the world's full-time workforce. Technology has made a lot of work unnecessary, with computers and robots doing many tasks previously performed by humans.

Well into the 21st century, we continue to work the same long hours as 20th century laborers, using up ever more of Earth's supply to produce more goods that we must keep working to buy, use and replace in a seemingly endless cycle of hard work and consumption. It's time to pause and consider better ways to live like shifting from fossil-fueled lifestyles with which our consumer-based workweeks are connected.

The UK think tank, New Economics (经济学)Foundation, argues that a standard 21-hour workweek would address a number of interconnected problems "overwork, unemployment, over-consumption, high carbon emissions, low well-being, and the lack of time to live sustainably, to care for each other, and simply to enjoy life".

Economic systems that require constant growth on a finite (有限的)planet don't make sense. It's time for a change in our economic thinking.

1.Why did Ford decide to shorten the workweek?

A.To cut workers' pay.

B.To make more profits.

C.To respond to worker demands.

D.To meet labor unions, requirements.

2.What change in the workforce happened after World War ?

A.More women worked full-time.

B.The number of laborers decreased.

C.Technology enabled people to work shorter hours.

D.It was unnecessary for a family's oldest male to work.

3.What can we infer from the third paragraph?

A.Longer working hours means better consumption ability.

B.The 21st century sees the longest working hours in history.

C.The cycle of hard work and consumption should be changed.

D.Pausing our way of living can change the present workweek.

4.New Economics Foundation thinks a 21-hour workweek will _______.

A.increase unemployment

B.cause various problems

C.encourage people to enjoy life

D.challenge the economic growth

While jewelry made from gold can be beautiful, most people admit that wearing the heavy metal over long periods of time can get a little annoying. Now, researchers from Swiss university ETH Zurich have created a new form of lightweight gold that weighs five to ten times less than traditional 18-carat gold—which typically consists of 75 percent gold and 25 percent copper—but has the same purity.

The researchers began by mixing gold with water, salt, protein fibers and other materials. They then replaced the water with alcohol and placed the mixture inside a high-pressure carbon dioxide (CO2) box. The reaction between the gas and alcohol transformed the golden plastic into a light material that can be heated to melt and made into whatever form was needed. "This gold has some characteristics of plastic,” says team leader Raffaele            Mezzenga, professor of Food and Soft Materials at ETH Zurich.

In addition to being lighter, the "plastic” gold has other advantages over traditional forms. It can be melted into shape at about 105 degrees Celsius, much lower than the 1,064 degrees Celsius required to melt pure 24-carat gold. The metal's firmness can be easily adjusted by changing the components at the beginning of the process. It is also much easier to vary the color. "As a general rule, our approach lets us create almost any kind of gold we choose, in line with the desired properties, says Mezzenga.

The researchers, who published their study in the journal Advanced Functional Materials on January 10, 2020, believe the new lightweight gold will be able to replace the metallic version in most traditional applications, including jewelry and watches. However, given that most buyers associate high-quality gold with weight, that may take some time. But the material will undoubtedly be beneficial for use inside electronic devices, chemical catalysts (催化剂),and even radiation shielding.

1.Why do many people find the traditional gold annoying?

A.It costs too much

An elephant, who accidentally fell into a dry, 25-foot deep well in Northeast India, lived to see another day thanks to the quick-thinking rescuers' scientific knowledge. The chain of events unfolded early in the morning on Tuesday, January 28, 2020, when citizens of Amliya toli village, in the state of Jharkhand, awoke to the cries of the trapped animal and called the forest department for help.

When the rescuers arrived, they instantly realized that pulling out the huge animal, which seemed to be about 30 years old, was not a practical idea. Fortunately , the forest department officials had been paying attention in their science class and were well aware of the Archimedes' principle. The physics law of buoyancy(浮力),which explains how ships stay afloat, states that when a body is partially or fully immersed in a liquid, it experiences an apparent loss in weight that is equal to the weight of the liquid displaced by the part of the body in the liquid.

In this case, that meant filling the well with enough water to displace the elephant's weight. It took the three motorized pumps over three hours to add the hundreds of gallons needed to enable the heavy animal to float up to the surface. However, it was well worth the effort. A heart-warming video shows the villagers cheering as the animal, using the makeshift ramp (斜坡)dug by the rescue team, pulls itself out of the well and walks away to safety in the nearby forest.

1.Who first found the trapped elephant?

A.Some scientists. B.Forest rescuers.

C.Nearby villagers. D.The forest department officials.

2.How did the rescuers feel about pulling out the elephant?

A.Impossible. B.Challenging. C.Secure. D.Realistic.

3.What does the underlined word “immersed” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

A.Broken. B.Covered. C.Stuck. D.Dampened.

4.What can be the best title for the text?

A.An Elephant Trapped in the Water

B.Villagers Used Water to Save Animals

C.Forest Rescuers Invented a New Technique

D.An Elephant Saved by the Archimedes' Principle

The first time I heard the expression "Know yourself" by Socrates, I didn't realize its meaning until I go to university. I started my university life unwillingly, because I didn't want to leave my parents and university of engineering was not my dream school, too. However, I changed my mind complete after a semester. My schoolmates are from different place, some of which are really outstanding. This makes me realized there is always someone much more better capable. Since then, to know myself has become an importance part of my life. Only by knowing who I am or where I am can I really follow the right path.

We usually interpret someone looking us straight in the eye during an interaction as a sign of trustworthiness. 1.This is at least the case in the Western world.

But research is increasingly challenging this standard view. 2. In a competitive environment where a negotiation is taking place, looking at another person directly in the eye can be a sign of competition and unkindness, rather than kindness.

While folk wisdom tells us eye contact is a sign of honesty and trustworthiness, these findings were not a surprise. Animals have direct eye contact not before engaging in kind behaviors but rather immediately before an attack. 3. We humans seem to be carrying on this tradition by looking our opponent directly in the eye before we "attack".

What does this mean for the work place? In a competitive business environment, when taking part in negotiations or a business deal, for example, be aware that people who look you directly in the eye may not be as friendly as you think. 4. In many Asian cultures, for example, looking a person of higher status in the eye is a sign of disrespect, while looking away signals respect.

5. And this must be fully understood. This means they most likely don't apply to social environments, such as spending time with friends, family or loved ones. In these cases, direct eye contact, often referred to as a "gaze", can still be a sign of intimacy(亲密)and kindness.

A.This may help you understand eye contact much better.

B.Eye contact is a sign of challenge and threat from another.

C.The study led by Jennifer Jordan shows quite the opposite.

D.All the experiments took place in a competitive environment.

E.We use eye contact as a marker of intimacy and straightforwardness.

F.Actually it can be rather upsetting when someone avoids eye contact.

G.If you want to express honesty and reliability, direct eye contact may indicate the opposite.

Over 2. 5 quintillion 1018 bytes of data are created each day. Many of them consist of information that would allow people to be personally identified.

At the same time that we share our personal information, there is a growing concern with how that information is being gathered, stored, used and shared. While many economies like Canada and the EU have privacy laws dating back to the mid-1990s, changes to data practices in the past five years have motivated governments to review or update existing laws.

Changes to privacy laws are being fuelled by growing public concerns with the idea of unrestricted data accumulation and use. For instance, earlier this year, the World Economic Forum found that 1/3 of global citizens have no idea about how their personal information is used and that trust is lacking.

Privacy laws are changing to deal with the real and noticed risks of harm which result from the under-regulated or unregulated data economy. The EU has introduced big reform to laws which are aimed at protecting privacy. The EU's General Data Protection Regulation GDPR introduced strict requirements for those that control or process the personal data of the people who live in the EU. The GDPR's stated goals focus on the protection and basic rights of personal information. Certain US states are also entering the ring in the fight for control over personal data. They have passed or are actively considering privacy laws. California is out front. The California Consumer Privacy Act CCPA provides greater control to individuals over their personal information. There is a sense that privacy laws are on the near horizon in the US.

These are two examples that are actively pursuing more progressive privacy laws. One important consideration is to harmonize global standards for best law practices. This will ease compliance (遵守)across border and provide a valuable signal to the public that governments are keeping pace with rapid change.

1.What's the cause of the change of privacy laws?

A.A growing need for information. B.Public concerns over data security.

C.General awareness of data control. D.Collection of personal information.

2.How does Paragraph 4 develop?

A.By giving examples. B.By listing statistics.

C.By analyzing reasons. D.By making comparisons.

3.What is an important consideration for global law makers?

A.The practice of laws in different fields.

B.The reflection of reality in different eras.

C.The consistency of laws in different regions.

D.The adaptation to changes in different societies.

4.What is the passage mainly about?

A.EU passes new laws for privacy protection.

B.Governments ignore the violation of personal privacy.

C.Privacy laws are changing to protect personal information.

D.People lack the awareness of personal information protection.

Archeology (考古学)isn't the dusty science it was a generation ago. New technologies that once seemed out of sci-fi are now locating buried traces of buildings and revealing the ruins of cities.

For more than a decade, Sarah Parcak and her team have been on the front line of this revolution. They use satellite images to find and explore ancient sites around the globe. Now they're about to take on a new challenge as they focus Global Xplorer citizen-science project on India.

In 2017, Parcak launched an online platform, called Global Xplorer, to crowd source (群众外包)the initial assessment of satellite images for signs of cultures from long ago. Anyone in the world with a computer and Internet access could help discover and protect remains of Peru's rich cultural heritage. The results have been surprising. About 80,000 participants from a hundred countries have identified 19,000 sites that were not in Peru's database. The platform for Peru is still running.

If all goes well, the work in India could last for years. "India has had relatively little archaeological work done," Parcak says. Also, the full extent of India's archaeological work has never been mapped completely. Parcak expects her project to make up that. Wherever we end up going, the crowd's going to be able to see extraordinary things," Parcak says.

Thirty six India's cultural heritage relics are already listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Parcak thinks there could be tens of thousands of as yet unknown sites mapped as part of this project. The discoveries promise to be amazing across the land that has seen a parade of cultures come and go.

In the future, she hopes other countries will contact her to launch their own satellite surveys. The possibilities are huge. Parcak estimates that there are at least 12 million potential archaeological sites yet to be discovered. That means the sky is the limit for her project now that it has gotten off the ground successfully.

1.What's the purpose of  Parcak's  project?

A.To interview citizens via the Internet.

B.To dig out more remains of ancient cities.

C.To build databases for unknown cultural heritage.

D.To identify unknown ancient sites through joint efforts.

2.What do we know about the participants in Peru project?

A.They are Internet-equipped volunteers.

B.They are well-trained voluntary scholars.

C.They are mostly fans of archeology in Peru.

D.They are all archaeologists all over the world.

3.Why is Parcak's project important to India?

A.India lacks thorough archaeological work.

B.Indians call for the protection of their rich cultures.

C.There's no amazing archaeological discovery in India.

D.India needs more relics listed as World Heritage Sites.

4.What does the underlined sentence "The possibilities are huge. " in Paragraph 6 mean?

A.Parcak's project will become successful.

B.Few countries will start satellite surveys.

C.There will be amazing discoveries in India.

D.More archaeological sites will be identified.

"Like a monster, it destroys everything. " That's how one school girl described a tsunami(海啸).

On Dec. 26, 2004, a magnitude-9. 1 earthquake in Indonesia set off a massive tsunami. It killed more than 230,000 people across four countries and cost an estimated $ 10 billion in damage.

Nov. 5 is World Tsunami Awareness Day and at the United Nations Wednesday, disaster risk reduction was high on the agenda.

"What I can tell you is that the tsunami wave cannot be stopped," said Bulgarians U. N. Ambassador Georgi  Velikov Panayotov. He was on vacation in Thailand in 2004 and survived the tsunami. "What we can do is build early warning systems and, of course, educate the population about the damaging power of the tsunami wave," he said.

On March 11, 2011, a magnitude-9 earthquake rocked northeastern Japan triggering a fierce tsunami that also damaged the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, south of Sendai.

"When the big earthquake hit Japan in 2011, people thought that we were prepared for it," said Japan's U. N. Ambassador Koro Bessho. "It caused severe damage. We had dams we had drills. However, we had been counting on something that hits every 100 years and the earthquake was of the size of possibly every 500 years or thousand years, he said.

These two events sent the countries of the region into overdrive to review and improve disaster preparedness. In 2015 the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction was born. It aims to help create a better understanding of disaster risk and improve preparedness for an effective response.

Indonesia is made up of thousands of islands which are disaster-prone(易受灾地区). Willem Rampangilei, head of the Disaster Management Agency of Indonesia, said his government now has plans for every disaster-prone city.

Countries at risk are also expanding their education programs. Children from an early age are taught how to react in case of a tsunami and then go with their classmates to higher ground away from coastal areas to avoid the walls of water the tsunami triggers.

1.What does Georgi Velikov Panayotov mainly talk about?

A.The general features of a tsunami. B.Ways for humans to face a tsunami.

C.His suffering in the 2004 tsunami. D.The loss caused by the 2004 tsunami.

2.In Koro Bessho's opinion, why did the 2011 earthquake cause severe damage?

A.It caused a fierce tsunami. B.It destroyed a nuclear plant.

C.The size was beyond expectation. D.There was no effective defense system.

3.What common belief pushed different countries to take action to face a coming tsunami?

A.Children should be protected by all means.

B.The improvement of preparedness can reduce damage.

C.Proper response in case of a tsunami can save one's life.

D.Stronger measures should be taken in disaster-prone areas.

4.Which can be the best title of the text?

A.World Tsunami Awareness Day

B.Nations Attacked by Massive Tsunami

C.The Unpredictable and Destructive Disaster

D.Learn from Disasters to Prevent Future Ones
