It is 5 am and it’s too dark to see the fields of volcanic rock and trees on either side of the highway. But over the lights of my car, I get a taste of the _________ I’m really here for, as a few stars pierce(穿透)the inky _________ sky.

Today our relationship to the universe is largely connected by _________, such as telescopes and NASA assignments. But for thousands of years, humans could _________ look up on a clear night to be _________ at the bright spots that stretched directly over them.

But over time, we’ve _________ ourselves from our sky, building a covering of artificial light between ourselves and the dark depth of space. Our _________ , neon signs (霓虹灯), and other electric lights are increasingly flooding the night sky and _________ the stars. _________, about one third of the world’s population cannot see the Milky Way from where they live. And some can’t even recognize it. The sense of wonder for the night sky ____________, and that means something vital to humanity is lost as well.

That’s why I’ve dragged myself out of bed hours before ____________. Like 99 percent of Americans, I live with ____________ pollution and I’ve never seen a truly night sky. So I’m here to ____________ my first glance.

As I ____________ out of the car, I ____________ raise my face up towards the sky, worrying whether I can make it. There it is, ____________ across the sky as far as I can see. The Milky Way is so vivid that my eyes don’t even have to ____________ the dark to see it.

I expect to feel the ____________ of the sky, perhaps as though I’m falling into a bottomless hole. Instead, the blanket of stars above me is so thick that it is hard to ____________. In black and white, the whole scene feels surreal. As I get back in the car, I pass a ____________ that says “Never Stop Looking Up”.

It is amusing that yogurt, which was invented to make milk last longer before the days of refrigeration, now makes grocery shopping last longer. Full-fat, or nonfat? Greek, or regular? 1.

A key recommendation when it comes to fat is to choose low-fat or fat-free yogurt. That's because dairy fat is mostly saturated (饱和的), the type linked with increased risk of heart disease. Besides, full-fat dairy has more calories than nonfat.

This view, however, has been challenged by a few recent studies. Researchers think that full-fat dairy might offer some as-yet-unknown health benefits. It might also help with weight management because the fat in it makes it more satisfying, helping keep our appetite in check.

2. Until there are further findings, it might be wiser to choose low-fat or fat-free yogurt and add healthy fat by topping it with nuts.

3. Many of them also have a hard time deciding whether to buy Greek yogurt or regular yogurt. Greek yogurt, which was rare about a decade ago, dominates the store shelves with dozens of flavors today. It has become popular partly because it features a thick, creamy texture (口感) and contains more protein and less sugar than regular yogurt.

Greek yogurt has these qualities because of its unique liquid-removing process. Unfortunately, lots of nutrients, including calcium (), are sometimes drained, too. Therefore, thickened yogurt and regular yogurt offer different nutritional benefits. 4.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that it's the added sugar, not the naturally- occurring sugar (which is removed in Greek yogurt), that should be the cause of our concern. Fruit-flavored yogurts that appear to be healthy may have little actual fruit and plenty of added sugar instead. 5.

A.Consumers, however. are not confused only about fat.

B.Mixing them up and enjoying both might be a good idea.

C.With so many conflicting headlines about fat these days, it's no wonder people are confused when buying dairy products.

D.Our best bet might be to buy plain yogurt and sweeten it ourselves using fresh fruit.

E.There are so many choices that we often find it hard to decide which yogurt to buy.

F.They're naturally ''packaged'' with so many important nutrients that it would be misguided to avoid them.

G.Yet more research needs to be done for us to fully understand dairy fat’s health impact .

A man in northwest Spain, 54, died after being stung by a “ murder hornet (大黄蜂)”, according to a report. The man from Villestro in Galicia was stung in the eyebrow by an Asian giant hornet while tending to a nest close to a beehive he owned. The deadly insects from Asia were first spotted last weekend in Washington State. Such reports have caused a national panic that may lead to more “needless” damage to those essential insect populations, the experts warned. “Millions and millions of innocent native insects are going to die as a result of this,” Dr. Doug Yanega, a professor at the University of California, Riverside, told the Los Angeles Times. “People in China, Korea and Japan have lived side by side with these hornets for hundreds of years and it has not caused the collapse of human society there. My colleagues in Japan, China and Korea are just rolling their eyes in disbelief at what kind of snowflakes we are.”

Following the initial hornet sightings on May 2, the Washington State Department of Agriculture issued instructions on how to trap the hornets, stressing that so far, the hornets have been sighted only within the state. “There are no known sightings of Asian giant hornets anywhere else in the United States and trapping for them there will likely do more harm than good. PLEASE DO NOT TRAP FOR ASIAN GIANT HORNETS IF YOU LIVE OUTSIDE OF WASHINGTON STATE,” the warning read. The concern for bees has originated from their role in the general ecosystem: Bees are responsible for pollinating (授粉) approximately 75 percent of the fruits, nuts and vegetables grown in the United States, according to the U. S. Geological

Numerous bug experts said that what they call “murder hornet” reminds them of the 1970s public when Africanized honeybees, nicknamed “killer bees”, started moving north from South America. However, they just kill people in rare situations.

1.What does the underlined word “snowflakes” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

A.People favoring cold weather.

B.People with a habit of rolling eyes.

C.Someone easily getting mad or offended.

D.Small pieces of frozen water falling from the sky.

2.Why does trapping hornets do more harm than good?

A.Because these insects seldom kill people.

B.Because insects do harm to the general ecosystem.

C.Because they are seen only in Washington state.

D.Because most plants in America depend on bees to grow.

3.What is the purpose of writing the text?

A.To teach the public ways to trap hornets.

B.To warn the public to stay away from hornets.

C.To appeal to people to live in harmony with hornets.

D.To remind people of the past killing cases by hornets.

4.Where is the text most likely from?

A.An essay. B.A news report.

C.A tourist brochure. D.A geography textbook.

Juili Kale was looking forward to receiving her master's degree at Arizona State University. She planned to invite her family living in India to the United States for her graduation ceremony. But then, in March, the coronavirus pandemic ended those plans as schools nationwide closed to stop the spread. Kale's dream of spending time with family members on her big day came crashing down. Yet the graduation ceremony is taking place—just not as she expected.

University officials have turned to robots so Arizona State graduates and their families can take part in the event online. Cameras recorded images of Kale and about 140 other graduates online this month. They were wearing robes and mortar board caps. They took turns moving a robot at the university that held an eye-level display showing their face. With the help of the robot, they stepped forward to receive their diplomas and take pictures. The robots are from Double Robotics, a company based in Burlingame, California. Before the health crisis, they had been used to help people attend funerals and even marriage ceremonies without traveling.

Sanjeev Khagram is dean of Arizona State's Thunderbird School of Global Management. He said that the video- a ''bittersweet'' experience—was recorded and produced over two days. It may not have been ideal for the students. Khagram admitted. '' But, we want to show that we did everything that we could to celebrate them. When the crisis is over, the class of 2020 can do a real-life walk at any future graduation ceremony they choose. ''

Kale planned to throw a ''watch party'' with her husband at home and her family in India.

Getting used to the online experience was easy for Nancy Sierras Morales. ''We have been able to adapt very quickly because we are used to being on a computer and on the phone almost like 24/7, '' the 22-year-old said. She said that, while it is not the best, it is ''cool...to be like the first class ever to do this''.

''I'm disappointed.'' said 41-year-old Douglas Northcott. He is graduating with a master's degree in applied leadership and management. He called the online event with robots ''creative''. But he looked forward to the real thing. ''And if anything, that makes it better , in that it is spread over two times rather than one. ''

1.What had the robots mainly been used for before the graduation ceremony?

A.Saving travelling for people to attend ceremonies like weddings.

B.Hosting all kinds of ceremonies for people unable to travel.

C.Helping professors with their teaching plans in universities.

D.Amusing people during their travelling to funerals.

2.According to the text, ________ made a fast adjustment to the new situation.

A.Juili Kale B.Sanjeev Khagram

C.Nancy Sierras Morales D.Douglas Northcott

3.According to Sanjeev Khagram, to have a real graduation ceremony, the 2020 graduates can ________.

A.throw an online ''watch party''

B.attend any future graduation ceremony

C.hold another real one by themselves

D.do everything they can to celebrate

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.A disappointing graduation ceremony

B.A graduation ceremony with the help of robots

C.A multifunctional robot from Double Robotics

D.A special experience of students in the health crisis

Ralph Waldo Emerson once quoted that “Nothing great can ever be achieved without enthusiasm.” I have a lot of enthusiasm. This is Northlandz in Flemington, New Jersey. Northlandz is the world’s largest model railroad. Well I guess, you know, everybody has a passion for something, my thing was trains.

I had trains around the Christmas tree as a kid. Wherever I lived I was planning track plans and then over 18 years I added five basements onto the house. And from that I got fairly good at making mountains and bridges and design work and we decided to give it to the world so we tore it all down, bought this land and built Northlandz.

Any given day we run between 85 and 90 trains. Here are some of the details in Northlandz inside—about 40,000 feet of track, and about 4,000 buildings over 400 bridges. Many of the mountains in here are three and a half stories high. Most things in here are scratch built. Underneath the entire superstructure there’s enough lumber to build about 42 large houses. It takes a few hours to go through for the average person to see everything.

We went millions into debt to build this place. Everybody thought we were nuts. The only one that believed in what I wanted to do was my wife and she was totally with me on this big time. It’s an artistic effort. It’s a gift to the world of what I can do and it makes a lot of people happy.

3.What can we learn about Northlandz?

A.It is the largest real railroad throughout the world.

B.There run 85 trains on the 40,000 feet of track every day.

C.People have to spend much time appreciating every detail of it.

D.Many mountains in it are so high as to reach three and a half meters.

4.What did people think of the author’s devotion to building the place?

A.Crazy and skeptical.

B.Artistic and admirable.

C.Ambitious and pleasant.

D.Frustrating and unbelievable.

The spot of red was what first caught Randy Heiss’s attention on December 16, 2018. He was hiking the remote land behind his farm in a small town near the U.S.-Mexico border, and there lying on the grass was a balloon. He walked toward it with his dog, thinking he should pick it up and throw it away.

That’s when he noticed the balloon’s string was attached to a piece of paper. “Dayami,” it read on one side, in a child’s writing. Heiss flipped the paper over. On the back he saw a numbered list, all in Spanish. His Spanish wasn’t very good, but he could see it was a Christmas list!

Heiss was charmed. He suspected that a child had tried to send Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. Nobody had ever returned the letters Heiss had sent, but he wondered whether he could find the girl who had sent this one.

It would be difficult, but Heiss had a few clues. About 20 miles to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico, with a population of about a quarter million. Based on the wind direction, he was almost sure that was where it came from. Heiss brought the note home to his wife, who is fluent in Spanish and helped him translate the list. They determined that Dayami, probably a girl, had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, doll clothes and art supplies.

Heiss then posted his search about finding Dayami on Facebook, attaching photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girl’s family. A few days passed with no results; Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, 2018, he decided to send a private Facebook message to Radio Xeny, an AM radio station based in Nogales. To his surprise, someone from the station called him back right away and promised him to post his search on the station’s Facebook page immediately.

Paragraph 1:

The next morning, Heiss awoke to a message from Radio Xeny.

Computers have beaten human world champions at chess and, earlier this year, the board game Go. So far, though, they have struggled at the card table. So we challenged one AI to a game.

Why is poker(扑克)so difficult? Chess and Go are “information complete” games where all players can see all the relevant information. In poker, other players’ cards are hidden, making it an “information incomplete” game. Players have to guess opponents’ hands from their actions----tricky for computers. Poker has become a new benchmark for AI research. Solving poker could lead to many breakthroughs, from cyber security to driverless cars.

Scientists believe it is only a matter of time before AI once again vanquishes humans, hence our human-machine match comes up in a game of Texas Hold’s Em Limit Poker. The AI was developed by Johannes Heinrich, researcher studying machine learning at UCL. It combines two techniques: neural(神经的)networks and reinforcement learning(强化学习).

Neural networks, to some degree, copy the structure of human brains: their processors are highly interconnected and work at the same time to solve problems. They are good at spotting patterns in huge amounts of data. Reinforcement learning is when a machine, given a task, carries it out, learning from mistakes it makes. In this case, it means playing poker against itself billions of times to get better.

Mr Heinrich told Sky News: “Today we are presenting a new procedure that has learned in a different way, more similar to how humans learn. In particular, it is able to learn abstract patterns, represented by its neural network, which allow it to deal with new and unseen situations.”

After two hours of quite defensive play, from the computer at least, we called it a draw.

1.Why can’t the computer beat humans at the poker game?

A.Because humans are cleverer than the computer

B.Because humans practice playing the poker game every day

C.Because the computer can’t know the other players’ cards completely

D.Because the computer can’t learn the regular rules of the poker game

2.What does the underlined word “vanquishes” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A.Leaves B.Defeats C.Cheats D.Serves

3.What do we know about the reinforcement learning of AI?

A.It solves problems correctly every time

B.It is the same as the learning of humans

C.It learns from the mistakes appearing in a task

D.It is more developed than the studying ways of humans

4.What can be inferred from the text?

A.The new procedure of AI has some features of humans

B.Computers are stronger than humans in every aspect

C.Humans will beat computers at playing poker forever

D.Scientists feel unhappy about the result of the poker game

Rising numbers of older adults are unable to care for themselves, often leading to serious health problems and even death, according to state and local government agencies. So-called self-neglect cases generally involve the inability to perform basic self-care, such as providing oneself with food, personal health, medication and safety.

Seniors who no longer drive, for instance, are often unable to get to medical appointments, worsening health problems that can make them unable to care for themselves. A fall can result in body injuries leaving one bedridden (卧床不起的) and unable to care for oneself. Failure to pay bills for public services could lead to service cutoffs. Forgetting to pay rent could lead to the loss of a home.

Mr. McCormack, 75 years old, and his wife, 71, both had mental illness and stayed in hospitals from time to time, unable to care for their possessions. Despite repeated visits to their home by local officials, the McCormacks declined assistance. But after they were found living in their car parked outside their house in December 2017, officials removed them from their home and helped them settle in a nursing home.

Self-neglect cases, like above, involved 144,296 people across the country in 2018, according to a report. The federal government doesn’t have comparable data for previous years, but several state and local service providers say they are seeing the self-neglect problem swell.

The reasons seniors stop caring for themselves vary, including illness, depression and poverty. The loss of the spouse or a neighbor who previously kept an eye on an individual often starts a decline into self-neglect, experts say. And the key to reducing self-neglect cases is providing services to enable seniors to remain in their homes safely, such as reliable transportation for medical appointments and shopping, as well as affordable home help.

1.What does the author intend to do in paragraph 2?

A.Give examples of self-neglect cases. B.Provide some advice for seniors.

C.Summarize the previous paragraph. D.Introduce a new topic for discussion.

2.What do we know about the McCormacks?

A.They longed for help from others. B.They took good care of themselves.

C.They couldn’t afford to go to hospital. D.They ended up living in the nursing house.

3.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Self-care Benefits Greatly the Seniors.

B.Self-Neglect Rises Among the Elderly.

C.Government’s Encouragement on Self-care.

D.Many Years’ Investigation on Self-Neglect.

This was the first real task I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington. As I searched the name, I found that there were two famous people having the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts, while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice; let the coin decide. I flipped () a coin and Ah! Tails (背面)! My report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver.

Weeks later, I stood in front of the classroom and proudly read my homework. But things started to get strange. I looked around the room, only to find my classmates with big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes and my stone-faced teacher. I was completely lost. “What could be causing everyone to act this way?”

Oh well, I dropped the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, “My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American War of Independence.” The whole world became quiet! How could I know that my teacher meant that George Washington?

Of course, my subject result was awful. Sad but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to the headmaster Miss Lancelot, but she said firmly: No re-dos; no new score. I felt that it was not fair, and I believed I deserved a second chance. So I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, I sat in the headmaster’s office again, but this time a completely different conversation. I smiled and flashed back to the terrible moment at the beginning of the year as the headmaster told me I was good enough to skip (跳过) the 6th grade and started the 7th grade next term.

1.People in the class acted strangely because ________.

A.I was too proud of my homework

B.I mistook what the homework was about

C.the whole world suddenly became quiet

D.the teacher’s face turned to a stone

To address the plastic pollution troubling the world’s seas and waterways, Cornell University chemists have developed a new polymer (聚合物) that can degrade (降解) plastic when exposed to ultraviolet radiation, according to the research published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

“We have created a new plastic that has the mechanical properties required by commercial fishing gear. If it eventually gets lost in the water environment, this material can degrade on a realistic time scale,” said lead researcher Bryce Lipinski, professor of chemistry and chemical biology at Cornell University. “This material could effectively reduce persistent plastic accumulation in the environment.”

Commercial fishing contributes to about half of all floating plastic waste that ends up in the oceans. Fishing nets and ropes are primarily made from three kinds of polymers, none of which easily degrade. “While research of degradable plastics has received much attention in recent years,” Lipinski said, “obtaining a material with a mechanical strength comparable to commercial plastic remains a difficult challenge.”

Coates and his research team have spent the past 15 years developing the new plastic called isotactic polypropylene oxide, or iPPO. While its original discovery was in 1949, the mechanical strength of this material was unknown before this recent work. The high isotacticity and polymer chain length of their material makes it different from previous plastics and provides its mechanical strength.

Lipinski and other scientists want no race of the polymer to be left in the environment. He notes there is precedent (先例) for the biodegradation of small chains of iPPO which could effectively make it disappear and ongoing efforts aim to prove this.

1.What is the feature about the new polymer?

A.It can solve the problem of plastic consumption.

B.It can degrade plastic waste in the sea water.

C.It has been developed to solve plastic pollution.

D.It has been developed to lower fishing costs.

2.What can we infer from paragraph 3?

A.It requires great effort to invent the new plastic.

B.Fishing should be forbidden in the sea.

C.Fishing nets and ropes are not the major pollution source.

D.Degradable plastics were not paid attention to until recent years.

3.What did the recent study find about iPPO?

A.Its original discovery. B.Its mechanical properties.

C.Its complex structure. D.Its mechanical strength.

4.What is Lipinski’s attitude towards the future of iPPO?

A.Doubtful. B.Promising.

C.Unconcerned. D.Disapproval.

A couple John and Mary had a nice family and two lovely children. John had just been asked to go on a business trip to another city and would be gone for several days. It was decided that Mary needed an outing and would go along too. They hired a reliable woman to care for the children and made the trip, returning home a little earlier than they had planned.

As they drove into their home town happily, they noticed smoke, and they went off their usual route to see what it was. They found a home in flames. Mary said, “Oh well it isn’t our fire, let’s go home.” But John drove closer and exclaimed, “That home belongs to Fred Jones who works at the plant. He wouldn’t be off work yet, maybe there is something we could do.” “It has nothing to do with us.” protested Mary. “You have your good clothes on, let’s not get any closer.” But John drove up and stopped and they were both horror stricken to see the whole house in flames. A woman on the lawn was in hysterics screaming, “The children! Get the children!” sobbed the woman, “down the hall and to the left, they are in the basement.”

In spite of Mary’s protests John grabbed the water hose and soaked his clothes, put his wet handkerchief on his head and bolted for the basement full of smoke and scorching hot. He found the door and grabbed two children, holding one under each arm. As he left, he could hear some more whimpering. He delivered the two badly frightened and nearly suffocated children into waiting arms and filled his lungs with fresh air and started back asking how many more children were down there. They told him two more and Mary grabbed his arm and screamed, “John! Don’t go back! It’s suicide! That house will cave in any second!”

But he shook her off and went back. It seemed an eternity before he found the two children. As he stumbled up the endless steps, the thought went through his mind that there was something strangely familiar about the little bodies clinging to him, and at last when they came out into the sunlight and fresh air, he found that he had just rescued his own children.

The baby-sitter had left them at this home while she did some shopping.

1.What did the couple find first when they went back?

A.Their home caught fire. B.Fred John’s home caught fire.

C.The baby-sitter’s leaving. D.The woman’s screaming.

2.Why was Mary against John’s rescue at the beginning?

A.Because it’s none of their business. B.Because she was eager to see her children.

C.Because it would burn his good clothes. D.Because Fred didn’t work at the plant.

3.Which of the following can best describe John?

A.Warm-hearted and brave. B.Clumsy but cautious.

C.Generous and humourous. D.Determined but sensitive

4.What can we learn from the text?

A.Helping others is a god virtue. B.A good act will be well rewarded.

C.Misfortune tastes the sincerity of friends. D.Roses given to others, fragrance left in your hand.

The driver, Zhang Sai, hovered outside an apartment building in Wuhan, the central Chinese city at the heart of the coronavirus outbreak. He had been ordered not to take food to customers’ doors in order to minimize the risk of infection. But the woman on the phone was pleading, he recalled. The food was for her mother, who couldn’t go down to meet him. Mr. Zhang relented. He would drop off the order and sprint away. As he placed the bag on the floor, Mr. Zhang said, the door opened. Startled, he rushed away. Without thinking, he jabbed the elevator button with his finger, touching a surface that could transmit the virus. That was how Mr. Zhang, 32, found himself speeding back to his delivery station with one finger held aloft, careful not to touch the rest of his hand.

For many in China, delivery drivers like Mr. Zhang are the only connection to the outside world. Once a common but invisible presence on the streets of nearly every Chinese city, the drivers are now being honored as heroes. What exhausting and dangerous work! Mr. Zhang, who works for Hema, a supermarket chain owned by the tech giant Alibaba, crisscrosses (穿梭) the city armed only with the face masks and hand sanitizer that his company supplies each morning.

The epidemic has brought some unexpected bright spots. Before, Mr. Zhang said, he sometimes ran red lights during rush hour in order to meet his delivery goals for the day. Now, the streets are empty. He has no problem getting around. People are nicer, too. Some customers barely opened the door or avoided eye contact. After the outbreak erupted, everyone said thank you.

1.Why Zhang Sai couldn’t send food to customers’ doors?

A.To keep away from the deadly disease.

B.To reduce the chance of being transmitted.

C.To avoid communicating with others.

D.To give himself a day off.

2.What does the underlined word “relented” in paragraph 1 refer to?

A.promised B.denied

C.admitted D.refused

3.What advantages did the epidemic bring accidently?

A.Economic prosperity and long culture.

B.Busy business and peaceful people.

C.Splendid surroundings and energetic persons.

D.Empty streets and friendly people.

4.What can be the best title for the text?

A.The biography of Zhang Sai’s.

B.How did Zhang Sai send food?

C.The driver Zhang Sai during the epidemic.

D.How was Zhang Sai infected?

Animals in Odd Places

Tree Goats

These goats will do a lot for their favorite snacks-including climbing to the top of a 9-m-tall tree! Every summer the argan trees in southwest Morocco produce bitter-tasting fruit that the local goats can’t resist. And these peckish goats are doing us humans a favour — when they spit (for sometimes poo!) out the indigestible nut inside the argan fruit, the nuts can be collected to make an oil that’s used in hair products and food!

City Whales

They’re not visiting the Empire State Building — they’re on the lookout for food! Humpback whales are swimming back in the waters off the coast of New York City in the USA. Why? Years of cleanup efforts in the Hudson River — a tidal estuary where fresh and salt water meet — have brought back algae, zooplankton and fish. And the humpbacks, which are the ultimate foodie tourists, weren’t far behind! So far this year there have been an incredible 377 sightings.

Forest Penguins

Fiordland crested penguins prefer the warm waters and misty rainforest of southwest New Zealand to the icy Antarctic! With smaller bodies than many cold-weather penguins (such as emperors), the flightless birds live in balmy 21. And their eggs stay toasty in this warmer habitat, too, tucked away in caves, bushes and tree stumps where males sit on the nests.

Ocean Sloths

Pygmy three-toed sloths might be slow climbers, but when they get into the water, they’re powerful paddlers! These special sloths, which only live in the mangroves of a tiny island off the coast of Panama in Central America, plop into the sea when they want to move to a new tree. Their tummies are often filled with gas due to their leafy diet, so they stay afloat easily-and they can move three times faster in the water than they can on the ground. But since we’re talking about sloths, that’s really saying much!

1.What’s the function of Tree Goats’ poo?

A.It can improve human’s skin. B.It can be used as an oil.

C.It can be beneficial to our hair and food. D.It can be used as shampoo.

2.What’s the purpose of Humpback whales’ returning?

A.To visit the Empire State Building.

B.To look for food.

C.To clean up the Hudson River.

D.To search for fresh and salt water.

3.Which animals can move much faster in the water than on land?

A.Tree Goats B.City Whales

C.Forest Penguins D.Ocean Sloths

There was once a wonderful old man who loved everything: animals, spiders, insects and allsorts of living things.

One day while walking through the woods, the old man found a cocoon() . He decided to take the cocoon home to watch its beautiful transformation from a little cocoon to a beautiful butterfly.

A few days later, the cocoon started to move. It moved frantically! He sat and watched it struggle and struggle for several hours. But it seemed not to make any progress. Then the old man felt sorry for the little butterfly inside, and rushed to its aid. With a pair of scissors and gently, he cut a little opening in the cocoon so the butterfly could come out. And then the butterfly came out of its cocoon. It had a swollen body and small, fragile wings, but it never was able to fly.

He was quite puzzled. Had he accidentally killed the little butterfly? No, it was still moving a little bit. Maybe it was sick. Then he decided that the best thing he could do for the butterfly was to place it gently back into its cocoon. He did so, and placed a drop of honey on it to seal the cocoon, leaving the butterfly to nestle (筑巢) in its natural state.

The next day he noticed that the cocoon was moving again. It struggled and struggled. Finally the butterfly broke free from its cocoon and stretched its wings out. Its beautiful wings were filled with wonderful colors! It took off! It was flying!

The wonderful butterfly flew and flew till it was almost out of the old man’ s sight. What a joy, he exclaimed! But then he started to think: what did I do wrong by trying to help that beautiful little butterfly out at first?

Finally the answer came out.

Urban Wildlife

Cities are diverse ecosystems. In addition to visitors from the wild, a large number of species share our urban areas. As our cities spread, we need to think about what it is like for other species to have human neighbors.

Cities are built for humans. 1.For example, most city parks are kept neat and tidy so that humans will find them beautiful. But when we cut grass or plant flowers, we destroy natural habitats.

2.When a bridge in Austin, Texas was repaired, engineers added small gaps running along the length of its bottom. This made a good home for bats, and soon the bridge was the home of

thousands of bats. 3. Now, they have come to value their winged neighbors. The bats are a tourist attraction, and they eat lots of bugs every night.

There are also structures built with the aim of bringing wildlife into the city. The Beijing Olympic Forest Park is a good example. The park used native plants and created open, natural spaces for wildlife. The result is a zone in Beijing with over 160 species of birds. In many ways, the park is the opposite of a zoo. 4.

If we learn to share our space, we can become better neighbors to the wildlife around us. 5. Our own future will be endangered too.

A.They are built to protect birds.

B.Our actions sometimes help other species.

C.If we do not, more species will become extinct.

D.They do not always provide suitable habitats for wildlife.

E.Instead of being kept in cages, wildlife can move about freely.

F.At first, people were afraid of the bats and tried to get rid of them.

G.They would sit on it and their droppings would fall into the water.

A 2018 report found that food waste would increase by a third to 2. 1billion tons by 2030. Beyond the cost of the waste itselfthrown-away food generates a gas that contributes to climate change.

Home delivery meal kits()can reduce food waste by more than two-thirdsbut suppliers need to switch to reusable packaging to make them environmentally friendly.

Tailor-made meal kits cut waste by providing people with precise amounts of fresh ingredients(烹饪原料)for chosen recipesmeaning leftovers are minimized. But while the  delivery services score well on reducing food wastebuying the same food ingredients from the supermarket almost always saves energy overall simply because meal kits use so much single-use packaging. The good news is that if people have meals that are tailored for consumptionthey won’t overbuy and have less food waste. They fine-tune the amount of food to what they will actually eat.

Meal kits can reduce transport emissions(排放)if people go to the supermarket less  frequently. If people only go and buy such goods as soap and toilet paperthey may only have to visit once every couple of months. A delivery truck can carry meals for a lot of people in the neighborhood. So dozens of car trips might be replaced with one truck trip.

Howeverstudy found that even if delivery meal kits reduced food waste to zerothey would still use up more energy overall than buying the same food from the supermarket unless the energy used for the meal kit packaging was cut by a fifth. The packaging is a killer if it’s single-use and thrown awaywhich can make all the environmental benefits lost. But if the packaging can be reusedif it’s glass bottleslike in the old dayswe can get some benefits.

1.What can we learn about home delivery meal kits?

A.They can cut down on daily expenses.

B.They will totally solve the problem of food waste.

C.They can keep energy consumption to a minimum.

D.They will benefit the environment with reusable packaging.

2.What does the underlined word“fine-tune”in paragraph 3 mean?

A.Attach. B.Adjust.

C.Raise. D.Compare.

3.The author suggests carrying meals with a delivery truck to__________.

A.reduce transport emissions B.save more food

C.shop only in the supermarket D.shorten car trip distances

4.What’s the author’s attitude to meal kits?

A.Supportive. B.Unfavorable.

C.Objective. D.Indifferent.

“ The moment before they called my name, I was really nervous because the other finalists’ presentations are really good and I thought they would win, ” Kara Fan, 14, who has won America’ s Top Young Scientist, told Yahoo Finance. “ When they announced my name, I was really surprised actually. ”

To win that claim, Fan’ s nano-particle liquid bandage had to surpass the experiments of hundreds of fifth to eighth graders as well as nine other finalists. Fan started developing her liquid bandage in April 2019 to fight the overuse of antibiotics(抗生素).

According to the CDC, roughly 2 million people every year suffer a bacterial infection in the U. S. and about 23, 000 passed away as a result. If left alone, a UN study reported, drug- resistant diseases or the “ superbug” could lead to 10 million deaths across the globe by 2050. When Fan’ s sprayable bandage dries on a person’ s skin, it creates a thin layer that protects the wounded area while breaking the cell wall and killing the bacteria on the skin. After experimenting with copper nitrate(硝酸铜) to fight bacteria, switching to the silver nitrate ended up being the major catalyst (催化剂) to seeing results for her award-winning project.

“ Thousands of years ago, ancient people would use copper and silver to eat with and they would drink water from like copper bowls to kill bacteria, ” Fan explained. “ I found out that it didn’t work. So I used nano silver. ”

Sir Alexander Fleming’ s discovery of penicillin— a type of antibiotic— is Fan’ s favorite scientific discovery. That said, she doesn’ t think humans should rely too heavily on penicillin.

Following her years at Westview High School, Fan hopes to continue her biology track at Stanford University. Along with the 25, 000 cash prize she won on October 29, becoming Amer-ica’ s Top Young Scientist may help get the private university’ s attention.

1.How did Kara Fan feel about her winning the prize?

A.Confident. B.Regretful.

C.Proud. D.Unexpected.

2.For what purpose did Fan develop her liquid bandage?

A.To fight overuse of antibiotics. B.To enter a national contest.

C.To reduce deaths from injuries. D.To get into a good university.

3.Which of the following does Fan use to kill bacteria?

A.Copper nitrate. B.Copper.

C.Silver. D.Nano silver.

4.What might be Fan’ s opinion about penicillin?

A.Addictive. B.Valuable.

C.Useless. D.Irreplaceable.
