"If I rest, I rust"——would be an excellent motto for those who are troubled by the slightest bit of idleness.Even the most hard-working person might adopt it with advantage to serve as a reminder that, if one allows his abilities to rest, like the iron in the unused key, they will soon show signs of rust and, eventually, cannot do the work required of them.

Those who would attain the heights reached and kept by great men must- keep their ability polished by constant use, so that they may unlock the doors of knowledge, the gate that guard the entrances to the professions, to science, art, literature, agriculture—every department of human endeavor.

Industry keeps the key bright that opens the treasury of achievement. If Hugh Miller, after toiling all day in a quarry, had devoted his evenings to rest and recreation, he would never have become a famous geologist. The celebrated mathematician, Edmund Stone, would never have published a mathematical dictionary, never have found the key to science of mathematics, if he had given his spare moments to idleness, had the little Scotch lad, Ferguson, allowed the busy brain to go to sleep while he tended sheep on the hillside instead of calculating the position of the stars by a string of beads, he would never have become a famous astronomer.

Labor defeats all—not inconstant, or ill-directed labor; but faithful, persistent, daily effort toward a well-directed purpose. So industry is the price of noble and enduring success.

There is a new type of small advertisement becoming increasingly common in newspaper classified columns. It is sometimes placed among “situations vacant”, although it does not offer anyone a job, and sometimes it appears among “situations wanted”, although it is not placed by someone looking for a job, either. What it does is to offer help in applying for a job.

“Contact us before writing your application”, or “Make use of our long experience in preparing your curriculum vitae or job history”, is how it is usually expressed. The growth and apparent success of such a specialized service is, of course, a reflection on the current high levels of unemployment. It is also an indication of the growing importance of the CV, with the suggestion that it may now qualify as an art form in its own right.

There was a time when job seekers simply wrote letters of application.“Just put down your name, address, age and whether you have passed any exams”, was about the average level of advice offered to young people applying for their first jobs when I left school. The letter was really just for openers, it was explained, everything else could and should be saved for the interview. And in those days of full employment the technique worked. The letter proved that you could write and were available for work.Your eager face and intelligent replies did the rest.

There is no doubt, however, that it is increasing number of applicants with university education at all points in the process of engaging staff that has led to the greater importance of the CV.

3.In the past it was expected that first job hunters would

A.write an initial letter giving their life history

B.keep any detailed information until they obtained an interview

C.have no qualifications other than being able to read and write

D.pass some exams before applying for a job

4.The CV has become such an important document because

A.there has been an increase in the number of applicants with degrees

B.there has been an increase in the number of jobs advertised

C.jobs are becoming much more complicated nowadays

D.the other processes of applying for jobs are more difficult to do

Researchers have announced the result of two studies on the health effects of the drug aspirin. One study shows aspirin can sharply reduce the chance that a healthy, older man will suffer from a heart attack.

The study offered two new results from earlier findings, It said taking one aspirin pili every other day helped only healthy men over the age of fifty. It also said aspirin gave the greatest protection against heart attacks to men with low blood cholesterol(胆固醇)levels.

Earlier in the United States began a major aspirin study in the early 1980s.It included 22,000 healthy men doctors.Ail were between the ages of forty and eighty-four.More than 11,000 of the doctors took a harmless pill that contained no drug. The men did not know which kind of pill they were taking.

The doctors who took aspirin suffered 44% fewer heart attacks than those taking the harmless pill.139 men who took aspirin suffered from heart attacks.Ten of them died.239 men who did not take aspirin suffered from heart attacks.Twenty-six of them died.

The researchers said the doctors' study provides clear proof that taking aspirin can prevent a first heart attack in healthy, older men. They said, however, the result does not mean every man over the mage of fifty should take aspirin. They said aspirin couldn't help men who do not eat healthy foods, who smoke cigarettes and who are fat.The researchers said men who think they wou3d be helped by taking aspirin should talk with their doctors first.

China has a growing love affair with the cars. This is clear at the Beijing Asian Games Village Automobile Exchange, where more and more people come to look and increasingly to buy.

Alice Wu is an editor at a Chinese Internet publication. She takes the subway to work, but she is certain she can cut her commute time if she drives herself.Wu says it takes her three hours to get to work now.If she had a car, she says, the same trip would only take her two hours.

The Asian Games Village Automobile Exchange is the biggest car dealership in Beijing.General manager Guo Yong says the business sells more than two thousand cars each week.Guo says it is much easier for Chinese consumers to buy a car now.In the past, it would take them several years to earn enough money to buy a new car. Now, he says, many people only need to save for one year. Also, the emergence of less expensive domestic brands like Chery and BYD means more Chinese can afford cars.

For decades, most Chinese city residents got about by bicycle or public buses and trains. Now, in many areas, the number of new cars is growing faster than the road system, leaving city streets jammed with traffic.Guo Liang has wanted to buy a car for a decade, and he will be the first in his family to own one.He is not deterred by Beijing's traffic jams.Guo says if the traffic is too bad, he will use the car for leisure or holidays with his family.Another customer, Zhang Menxin, works in Beijing, but is from Xi'an, more than 900 kilometers away.Zhang says it is very difficult to get a train ticket to return home for Chinese New Year. She adds that train is not convenient. If she had her own car, she says, she could go anytime she wanted to.

If you live in a city where everyone rushes, realize that you don't have to be like everyone else. You can be different.

I can't give you a step-by-step guide to moving slower, but here are some things to consider and perhaps adopt, if they work for your life.

1.Do less

Cut back on your projects, on your task list, on how much you try to do each day.Focus not on quantity but on quality.Pick 2 or 3 important things-or even just one important thing- and work on those first.

2.Have fewer meetings

Meetings are usually a big waste of time and make you rush.Try to have blocks of time with no interruptions, so you don't have to rush from one meeting to another.

3.Give yourself time to get ready and get there

If you're constantly rushing to appointments or other places you have to be, it's because you don't allot(分配) enough time in your schedule for preparing and for traveling.Pad your schedule to allow time for this stuff. If you think it only takes you 10 minutes to get ready for work or a date, perhaps give yourself 30 to 45 minutes so you don't have to shave in a rush or put on makeup in the car.

4.Practice being comfortable with sitting doing nothing

When people have to wait, they become impatient or uncomfortable.Try standing in a line and just watching and listening w people around you.It takes practice, but after a while, you’ll do it with a smile.

5.Realize that if it doesn't get done, that's Ok.

There's always tomorrow. And yes, I know that's a frustrating attitude for some of you who don't like laziness or living without firm deadlines, but it's also reality. The world likely won't end if you don't get that task done today.Your boss might get mad, but the company won't collapse and the life will inevitably go on.

Try these things out.Life is better when unrushed.

Remember the quote: If nature can get everything done without rushing, so can you.

1.Which can be the best title of the passage?

A.How not to hurry in our life?

B. How to give out our life?

C.What to do with our life?

2.If you think you need 10 minutes to get ready for the date with your boyfriend, ______.

A.you don't have to put on makeup

B.you'd better squeeze about 35 minutes out for it

C.you should arrange 10 minutes for it

D.you should rush there

3.According to the passage, we can know_______.

A.even if we do as we're told by the author, we can't change anything

B.if we follow the author's advice, our life will be better

C.we should try to do all the things better on our task list

D.there's always tomorrow, so we can put off the thing that must be done today till tomorrow

4.The underlined word "collapse" has the similar meaning to "______".

A.develop rapidly

B.pay enough

C.fail completely

D.drop suddenly

After attending a conference, I returned to my hotel room late one evening. The overhead light out- side my door was burned out and I had  36 finding the keyhole. When I   37  to open the door, I 38  around the wall for a light switch.I found a plate where a switch was   39  installed… but no switch!

Not discouraged easily, I remembered   40   a lamp by the bed when I deposited my luggage 41   in the day.I found the bed in the    42   and then the lamp, but when I switched it on ,nothing   43  ! I thought that perhaps if I opened the curtains I might be able to use whatever light comes in from the   44  to find another lamp.So I   45  my way slowly across the room to the curtains and …no drawstring! In the United States, engineering is a profession(职业) that has been historically under the control of men. Even today, it's still true that few women become civil or chemical or mechanical engineers, but that's something on www.EngineerGirl.org encouraging girls to change the present situation. Young women who visit the web site can find out about a great job choice they might not have considered.

"Women are not well represented in engineering and in engineering education programs and then of course, down the road, in the engineering workforce. So only about 20 percent of engineering undergraduate degrees(本科文凭) go to women, and then only about nine percent of working engineers are women."

Mary Mattis, the National Academy of Engineering, says "we know from the research that middle-school girls are at a critical point in their lives, and that it's a time when we need to reach them, so this website aims to increase their awareness of interesting fields in engineering. On the other hand, it wants to make them understand what a wonderful productive and exciting job you can have as an engineer.”

Engineering is a demanding course of study—there is a lot of science and math, for many girls and even boys that can be challenging. But Ms. Mattis says that the EngineerGirl website stresses that engineering can also be fun and exciting.

"It's about designing things. It's about changing the world for people. It's about making a difference. And, in addition, you can make a good living; you can be independent economically by becoming an engineer. All of those things are messages that girls need to get."

While most engineers go into traditional fields such as mechanical and electrical engineering, the EngineerGirl site also emphasizes engineering jobs which are related to other fields such as bio-engineering, sports engineering and --- believe it or not—chocolate engineering.

Even if you are not a girl in the target(目标) age group, there’s a lot of interesting information on the site, including biographies(自传)of some well-known women engineers.

The trip to the United State opened my eyes to the fact that there are a lot of similarities as well as differences between American youth and French youth.

The first difference is in appearance. Going around in the U.S., I found that American youth do not really care about their appearance. In the morning, they choose something in their closet and wear it with another thing, often of different colors and styles, without wondering whether their choices make them look strange. The reason behind this is that they don’t care what people look like, but are just interested in their ideas. I think it’s great, but it also causes problems. Since they don’t care about their appearance, they don’t really care about their weight. Often they get fat without realizing it.

There are differences in relationships too. When the American youth fall in love, they don’t really think of the future. Also, there are differences in the rules concerning behavior that is allowed. In some respects, the French are more accepting. For example, in America it is generally unacceptable to make physical display of love. Lovers, actually, can’t kiss or hold each other everywhere they want. People think that not showing love in public places is a way to respect others. On the contrary, the French youth can do almost everything they want.

As for other types of relationships, there are also big differences. Americans act differently from French people in front of unknown people. When an American girl, for example, arrives in front of people she has never met before, she will talk with them, trying to create a kind of tie between her and this new circle of people. The French girls will just think about rather than really do this kind of thing because they are too shy and lacking in self-confidence.

To finish, I noticed that in American classes, when pupils want to say or ask something, they just do it. In general, they don’t really care how the others will judge them. In France, it’s not the same case. If somebody wants to ask something, he/she will think about it before speaking up. I appreciate the freedom in Americans’ behavior, ideas, and ways of expressing themselves.

A.will not hold each other

3.It can be inferred from the passage that French youth may think more about ______.

A.their relationship’s future

B.their public images

C.their physical displays

D.their lover’s ideas

4.The passage is mainly about the______ between American youth and French youth.

A.differences

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have given $500,000 to help the town of Joplin —a town near the Mississippi River, where Pitt’s mother went to school recover from a huge tornado (龙卷风)that struck on May 22, 2011.

The couple made the donation through the Jolie-Pitt Foundation on Thursday to help rebuild the town of Joplin after about 30% of the buildings were destroyed by the tornado. Over 150 people were killed.

“The Joplin community faces great challenges ahead,” said Brad. "Having spent most of my childhood there, I know these people to be hardworking, humble and especially resilient.

“The locally based Community Foundation of the Ozarks will be working shoulder to shoulder with these Joplin citizens for long to rebuild their lives. We, too, hope to further help with these rebuilding efforts.”

“Last year 42 million people worldwide were hurt by natural disasters,” added Angelina. “So often, these disasters seem far away; but now, the need is right here at home for thousands of people. Our hearts go out to the families in Joplin who have lost so much.”

The Community Foundation of the Ozarks was founded in 1973 and has since grown to include 43 branch community foundations. The Foundation’s task is to improve the quality of life in the Missouri Ozarks area through resource development, community grant making, working together, and public leadership.

One evening I heard a loud crash in our quiet neighborhood.  26 that evening, my wife had asked me to go to the store to get some soft drinks. It was a good time to let my teenage daughter Holly practice her  27  , so I sent her to the store in my truck. At dinner my son talked about how much he liked my 28 .I enjoyed having it, but I said: "Guy, my heart is not set on that truck.I like it but it is 29  metal and won' t last forever."
