If you could change your child's DNA in the future to protect them against diseases, would you? It could be possible because of technology known as CRISPR- Cas, or just CRISPR.

CRISPR involves a piece of RNA, a chemical messenger, designed to work on one part of DNA it also uses an enzyme (If) that can take unwanted genes out and put new ones in, according to The Economist. There are other ways of editing DNA, but CRISPR will do it very simply, quickly, and exactly.

The uses of CRISPR could mean that cures are developed for everything from Alzheimer's to cancer to HIV. By allowing doctors to put just the right cancer-killing genes into a patient's immune system, the technology could help greatly.

In April scientists in China said they had tried using CRISPR to edit the genomes (基因组)of human embryos. Though the embryos would never turn into humans, this was the first time anyone had ever tried to edit DNA from human beings. With this in mind, the US' National Academy of Sciences plans to discuss questions about CRISPR s ethics(伦理问题).For example? CRISPR doesn't work properly yet. As well as cutting the DNA it is looking for, it often cuts other DNA, too. In addition, we currently seem to have too little understanding of what DNA gives people what qualities.

There are also moral questions around playing God”. Of course, medicine already stops natural things from happening-for example, it saves people from infections. The opportunities to treat diseases make it hard to say we shouldn't keep going.

A harder question is whether it is ever right to edit human germ-line(种系)cells and make changes that are passed on to children. This is banned in 40 countries and restricted in many others. However, CRISPR means that if genes can be edited out, they can also be edited back in. It may be up to us as a society to decide when and where editing the genome is wrong.

Also, according to The Economist, gene editing may mean that parents make choices that are not obviously in the best interests of their children: “Deaf parents may prefer their children to be deaf too parents might want to make their children more intelligent at all costs.

In the end, more research is still needed to see what we can and can't do with CRISPR. “It's still a huge mystery how we work,” Craig Mello? a UMass Medical School biologist and Nobel Prize winner, told The Boston Globe, "We're just trying to figure out this amazingly complicated thing we call life.

1.What is the passage mainly about?

A.What we can and can't do with CRISPR.

B.How CRISPR was developed by scientists.

C.The advantages of CRISPR and arguments about its ethics.

D.Scientists' experiments of using CRISPR to edit human embryos.

2.According to the passage, the technology of CRISPR .

A.is very safe because it only cuts the DNA it is looking for

B.is banned in most countries and restricted in many others

C.could cause parents to make unwise choices for their children

D.could help us discover the link between DNA and the qualities it gives people

3.It can be inferred from the passage that .

A.all diseases could probably be cured through the uses of CRISPR

B.scientists had never edited genomes before CRISPR was invented

C.CRISPR is a technology that uses an enzyme to work on RNA and DNA

D.CRISPR has proven to be the most effective way to protect children against diseases

4.What is the author's attitude towards CRISPR?

A.Supportive. B.Worried. C.Negative. D.Objective.

A black hole is created when a large star burns out. Like our sun, stars are unbelievably hot furnaces(熔炉)that burn their own matter as fuel. When most of the fuel is used up, the star begins to die.

The death of a star is not a quiet event. First there is a huge explosion. As its outer layer is blasted off into space, the dying star shines as brightly as a billion suns.

After the explosion gravity pulls in what's left of the star. As the outside of the star sinks toward the center, the star gets smaller and smaller. The material the star is made of becomes tightly packed together. A star is so dense that a teaspoon of matter from it weighs billion of pounds.

The more the star shrinks, the stronger the gravity inside it becomes. Soon the star is very tiny, and the gravity pulling it in is unbelievably strong. In fact, the gravity is so strong that it even pulls light into the star! Since all the light is pulled in, none can flee. The star becomes black when there is no light. Then a black hole is born!

That's what we know about black holes. What we don't know is this: What happens inside a black hole after the star has been squeezed into a tiny ball? Does it keep getting smaller and smaller forever? Such a possibility is hard to imagine.

But if the black hole doesn't keep shrinking, what happens to it? Some scientists think black holes are like doorways to another world. They say that as the star disappears from our universe, it goes into another universe. In other words a black hole in our universe could turn into a “white hole” in a different universe. As the black hole swallows light, the white hole shines brightly-somewhere else. But where? A different place, perhaps, or a different time-many years in the past or future.

Could you travel through a black hole? Right now, no. Nothing we know of could go into a black hole without being crushed. So far the time being, black holes must remain a mystery.

Black holes are a mystery-but that hasn't stopped scientists from dreaming about them. One scientist suggested that in the future we might make use of the power of black holes. They would supply all of Earth's energy needs, with plenty to spare. Another scientist wondered if a black hole could some day be used to swallow earthly waste-a sort of huge waste disposal(处理)in the sky!

1.When the star begins to die, .

A.there is no fuel left in it

B.its outer layer goes into space first

C.it will explode and then become smaller

D.it doesn't give off light any longer

2.Which of the following doesn't help produce a black hole?

A.The star becomes very tiny and dense.

B.The light can't go out of the star.

C.The gravity inside the star is very strong.

D.The dying star shines very brightly.

3.What can we know from the passage?

A.A star will blast and die when it lacks fuel to support its burning.

B.A black hole can swallow everything because it becomes smaller all the time.

C.Man can never travel through a black hole but can make use of its power.

D.Scientists have found that a black hole goes into another universe and becomes a white hole.

4.What's the best title for this passage?

A.A New Scientific Discovery: Black Holes

B.How Do Black Holes Come into Being?

C.What Are Black Holes?

D.Travel Through A Black Hole

I am the proud owner of three pet dogs. Over the years, I have watched their behaviours carefully that help me when I travel around the world.

One important lesson that my dog, Cody, taught me is how to deal with little problems in life. From his calm behavior when someone knocked unexpectedly at the door to the indifferent way he has dealt with his recent serious illness, he has always had the same easy-going attitude. This attitude is an important lesson to me in how I can face difficult situations when travelling, I've learned to try to handle bad situations calmly, such as when we miss a train? lose luggage? and so on.

Another dog of mine, Preston, loves to walk around the yard, spending hours smelling every place and finding out what it means to him. Taking it slowly is another lesson that's been very hard for me to learn. As an active traveller, I am actually experiencing less by speeding through everything, rather than slowly getting to know a place. Even if it means that you won't see as many things, going slowly when you travel is the only way to really get to know a new place. Rushing around a foreign city isn't fun at all.

My dog, Moya, came from a truly bad situation. I am not sure what happened to her before I just know it wasn't good. And while she has become more relaxed over the years, she is still slightly on edge. She is very cautious when faced with any new situation. But once she's accustomed to her new surroundings, she is fine. She doesn't let fear influence her experience. The same can be applied to our travel experience. No matter where we go, we need to manage new situations with caution--while at the same time not letting that caution turn into fear.

Many thanks to my pets. Truly speaking, pets are as basic to American culture as hot dogs or apple pies. To Americans, pets are not just property, but a part of the family. After all, pets are people, too, with the help of whom I am able to gain a lot and live differently.

1.One of the three dogs, Cody,_______ .

A.once suffered from a serious illness

B.is excited when under pressure

C.enjoys walking around the yard

D.is unable to deal with new situations

2.From Preston, the author learned that one should ______.

A.pay attention to the details in life

B.try to see as many things as possible when travelling

C.stay indifferent to strangers

D.travel around slowly and have fun

3.The underlined phrase "on edge" in the fourth paragraph probably means “_____ ”.

A.hungry B.nervous C.calm D.angry

4.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?

A. B. C. D.

After spending a year in Brazil on a student exchange program, her mother recalled, Marie Colvin returned home to find that her classmates had narrowed down their college choices. “Everyone else was already admitted to college,” her mother, Rosemarie Colvin, said from the family home. “So she took our car and drove up to Yale and said , ‘You have to let me in .’ “

“Impressed--she was a National Merit ( 英才) finalist who had picked up Portuguese in Brazil—Yale did, admitting her to the class of 1978, where she started writing for the Yale Daily News and decided to be a journalist,” her mother said.

On Wednesday, Marie Colvin, 56, an experienced journalist for The Sunday Times of London, was killed as Syrian forces shelled( 炮击) the city of Homs. She was working in a temporary media center that was destroyed in the attack.

“She was supposed to leave Syria on Wednesday”, Mrs. Colvin said. “Her editor told me he called her yesterday and said it was getting too dangerous and they wanted to take her out. She said she was doing a story and she wanted to finish it.”

Mrs. Colvin said it was pointless to try to prevent her daughter from going to conflict zones. “If you knew my daughter,” she said, “it would have been such a waste of words. She was determined, she was enthusiastic about what she did, it was her life. There was no saying ‘Don’t do this.’ This is who she was , absolutely who she was and what she believed in :cover the story, not just have pictures of it, but bring it to life in the deepest way you could.” “So it was not a surprise when she took an interest in journalism,” her mother said.

You try to keep your eyes wide open while watching a basketball match or a marvelous firework show in case you might miss something exciting in just the blink of an eye. But in fact, humans blink about 15 times per minute on average. Have you ever missed anything because you blinked? Probably not. Why is that?

According to a new study published in journal Current Biology in September, our brain has the ability to “skip” the temporary darkness that we see when we blink. It can keep visual information for a short period of time and then put it together to form a conclusive image without interruption.

In order to understand how this works, a group of scientists at the German Primate Center and the University Medical Center Gottingen in Germany conducted an experiment.

In the study, the participants were asked to look at patterns on a screen whose orientation(方向)could be shown in different ways, such as horizontally( 水平的) or vertically( 垂直的).When one pattern was about to disappear and the next one was about to come, the participants had to indicate the direction that the next pattern would be oriented in.

The researchers found that when the orientations of two patterns didn’t match, the medial prefrontal cortex(内侧前额叶皮层)--- the area in our brain which is responsible for visual memory---was activated. This same area showed less activity when two patterns were in the same direction.

“The medial prefrontal cortex adjust current visual information with previously obtained information, and thus enables us to see the world with more stability, even when we briefly close our eyes to blink,” Caspar Schwiedrzik explained in Science Daily. He is the first author of the study and also a scientist at the German Primate Center.

1.What ‘s the author’s intention to write the first paragraph?

A.To bring out the topic.

B.To show the importance of blink.

C.To show some interesting event in his life.

D.To give suggestions on when we should blink.

2.Why can’t we miss anything when blinking?

A.Because the time of the blink of an eye is too short.

B.Because our brain has the ability to “skip” the darkness.

C.Because our eyes can keep information and put it together.

D.Because the medial prefrontal cortex has a special function.

3.The underlined word “activated” probably means   .

Fashion and Identity

For hundreds of years people have put some message in the type of clothing they wore. Long ago people started wanting to stand out from the “crowd” and be different from other people by means of changing their clothing. Some examples of these “standing out” became very popular and were followed by more people.1.Nowadays, fashion has become a necessary part of one’s self-realization and clothing is basically a covering designed to be worn on a person’s body. This covering is a “necessity”, which brings a lot of variety into the lives of people and makes their image more complete.

The type of clothing completely depends on the person wearing it and becomes a reflection of personal identity. Lately, a lot is being heard about its meaning in the life of every single person on the planet. The choice of clothing is as important as identification through the color of hair, skin and gender. As every piece of clothing carries a strong message about its owner, every owner “nests” a certain value in it depending on his mindset or today’s mood. Therefore, the clothing of a person is a means of communication with the outside world.2.

Clothes have a significant impact on the understanding of the people nearby as well as the person wearing them. For instance, a suit can make a person feel more confident and organized, which would eventually change even the gestures of the person. 3. Sometimes, fashion may play a vital role in a person’s life, especially when the person is applying for the job he wants. Fashion also creates a message that is required by a situation the person finds himself in. This can be simply proved by analyzing one’s reaction on people wearing different types of clothing.4. Thus, even the smallest companies make wearing a suit one of the requirements for their employees.

5. Fashion, with all its symbolism and features, form an outstanding base for personal and cultural identification. It is a part of the self-realization that is required for finding a place in life and has become a tool for achieving harmony with the inner world. The more diverse the society around us, the more fashion-trend will appear and surprise us.

A.Fashion helps us realize our dreams.

B.This was the moment when fashion appeared.

C.Fashion and identity are inseparable companions.

D.Clothing was designed to serve people in their daily life.

E.The preference is always given to people dressed in “business style”.

F.It is the way of telling people about the “state” and the “status” of its owner.

G.Wearing jeans after a suit may change the conduct of a person to a very casual one.

The Impossible Burger is entirely free of meat. But it looks, smells, feels and—most importantly—tastes so much like real hamburger beef. In fact, plant-based burger alternatives have set off a strong resistance from the beef industry. The Center for Consumer Freedom, a nonprofit that advocates on behalf of the fast food and meat industries has launched an “informational” campaign targeting plant-based meats. The campaign has included TV and online ads, as well as print ads in newspapers. The ads seem to imply that not only is an artificial burger too processed, but that it might be even less healthy than the average beef burger.

While it’s true that a plant-based meat alternative is processed and it’s true that eating one is not as healthy as a pile of raw vegetables, it’s best to take the ads with a generous pinch of salt.

For instance, the additives and preservatives in plant-based meat highlighted in one ad sure sound scary. Who wants something called titanium dioxide (二氧化钛) in their meal? But the truth is that additives such as those listed in the ads are regularly used in all sorts of packaged foods. And if methylcellulose, a food thickener, sounds unpleasant, it’s really nothing compared with salmonella (沙门菌) poisoning you can get from regular meat.

Also, the ad campaign misses the bigger point. Choosing an Impossible or Beyond burger isn’t just about eating healthy. Burgers, whether they are made from processed pea protein or processed meat, will never be as healthy as organic raw vegetables.

What’s appealing is the prospect of enjoying a juicy burger without the bitter aftertaste of guilt.

Let’s face it, there are huge environmental costs to eating cows. Cattle raising is contributing to climate change, and not just because methane (甲烷) from cows and cattle is responsible for about 14.5% of greenhouse gas. More broadly, our global food production system releases more than a third of the world’s greenhouse gases. Yet we can’t seem to control our meat appetite even knowing that large areas of the Amazon forest have been ruined, and continue to be cut down to make room for more cattle to feed the growing demand for beef. Humans also know full well that many animals live short, cruel lives in awful conditions for the purpose of becoming foods for humans to enjoy at dinner.

A plant-based meat that satisfies meat desires and delivers protein but with a smaller climate footprint is a potential environmental game changer and the reason Impossible Foods was one of those receiving the U.N. Global Climate Action Award in 2019. No wonder the meat industry is on guard.

1.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?

A.These ads deserve little consideration.

B.We should spread the message of these ads.

C.We’d better be cautious when reading these ads.

D.These ads tell people a lot about plant-based burgers.

2.What do we know about additives and preservatives in plant-based burgers?

A.They are likely to cause poisoning.

B.Their use is within the normal range.

C.Some have not been used in hamburgers.

D.They are used to ensure burgers taste good.

3.What is the author’s attitude towards plant-based burgers?

A.Supportive. B.Neutral.

C.Disapproving. D.Doubtful.

4.Which of the following shows the development of ideas in the passage?

I: Introduction P: Point Sp: Sub-point (次要点) C: Conclusion

A. B.

C. D.
