Online programs to fight depression are already commercially available. While they sound efficient and cost-saving, a recent study reports that they're not effective, primarily because depressed patients are not likely to engage with them or stick with them.

The study looked at computer-assisted cognitive (认知的) behavioral therapy (CBT) and found that it was no more effective in treating depression than the usual care patients receive from a primary care doctor.

Traditional CBT is considered an effective form of talk therapy for depression, helping people challenge negative thoughts and change the way they think in order to change their mood and behaviors. However, online CBT programs have been gaining popularity, with the attraction of providing low-cost help wherever someone has access to a computer.

A team of researchers from the University of York conducted a randomized (随机的) control trial with 691 depressed patients from 83 physician practices across England. The patients were split into three groups: one group received only usual care from a physician while the other two groups received usual care from a physician plus one of two computerized CBT programs. Participants were balanced across the three groups for age, sex, educational background, severity and duration of depression, and use of antidepressants(抗抑郁药).

After four months, the patients using the computerized CBT programs had no improvement in depression levels over the patients who were only getting usual care from their doctors.

"It's an important, warning note that we shouldn't get too carried away with the idea that a computer system can replace doctors and therapists," says Christopher Dowrick, a professor of primary medical care at the University of Liverpool. "We do still need the human touch or the human interaction, particularly when people are depressed. "

"Being depressed can mean feeling lost in your own small, negative, dark world," Dowrick says. Having a person, instead of a computer, reach out to you is particularly important in fighting that sense of isolation. "When you're emotionally fragile, you're even more in need of a caring human being," he says.

1.What does the recent study say about online CBT programs?

A.Patients may not be able to carry them through for effective cure.

B.Patients cannot engage with them without the use of a computer.

C.They can save patients trouble visiting physicians.

D.They have been well received by a lot of patients'

2.What has made online CBT programs increasingly popular?

A.Their effectiveness in combating depression

B.The low efficiency of traditional talk therapy.

C.Their easy and inexpensive access by patients.

D.The recommendation by primary care doctors.

3.What is Professor Dowrick's advice concerning online CBT programs?

A.They should not be neglected in primary care.

B.Their effectiveness should not be overestimated.

C.They should be used by strictly following instructions.

D.Their use should be encouraged by doctors and therapists.

4.Which is more important to an emotionally vulnerable person?

A.A positive state of mind. B.Appropriate medication.

C.Timely encouragement. D.Human interaction.

The clock always seems to be ticking rather too fast in the doctor’s office and the queue of patients outside the door seems to be pressing rather too hard. Some say it’s high time for the model of short, sharp one-to-one appointments to give way to shared medical appointments (SMAs共享医疗预约).

SMAs are doctor-patient visits in which a group of patients receive patient education and counseling(咨询), physical examination and medical support in a group setting. Typically SMAs are designed to have one or more doctors attend to a group of patients who share a common illness or medical condition. In contrast to one-to-one visits, SMAS provide a longer appointment time-frame as well as the opportunity for patients to have improved access to their physicians and meanwhile pick up additional information and support from peers.

However, doctors who have pioneered the shared appointment approach report that there are significant challenges involved. Dr. Sumego, director of shared medical appointments, Cleveland Clinic, identifies culture change as the most significant challenge. Physicians and nurses are trained in a model of personal service and privacy; the SMA approach is a fundamental challenge to those fixed ideas. They need shared goals and a way of testing the innovation against agreed standards. Dr. Sumego says, “The physicians may be worried about the possible chaos and efficiencies that are marketed. They also have to make the patients understand what their appointment is, and what the expectation is.”

“So, if an organization was looking to start shared medical appointments, I would advise them to start the buy-in from a few champion physicians, develop the work-flow and develop some experience. Provide some support behind what that best practice should look like. Create some standards so that, as the concept spreads, you can employ that experience to start the next shared medical appointments and the next.”

1.What is the purpose of the SMA approach?

A.To improve medical service. B.To promote doctors’ reputation.

C.To conduct medical research. D.To meet patients’ expectation.

2.According to Dr. Sumego, what prevents the SMA approach from being widely adopted?

A.Personal service. B.Fixed ideas.

C.Lack of equipment. D.Shared goals.

3.What can the underlined “buy-in”in Paragraph 4 be replaced by?

A.practice. B.organization.

C.purchase. D.support.

4.What can be learned about the SMA approach in the last paragraph?

A.It is currently being questioned. B.It is impractical in some areas.

C.It will enjoy wide popularity soon. D.It should be carried out step by step.

For the past two years I have been travelling and living abroad. Home has become more of a feeling than a place. I feel at home when I am with my family in London, but I also feel at home in Italy with friends I love. Home is no longer a picture of a house with a front door and some windows. It is more complicated than that.

This is one of the reasons that celebrating the new year has become very important for me. I do not care about "New Year’s resolutions(愿望) - living abroad has made me constantly reconsider what kind of person I want to be and how I will live my life, so I don't feel the need to plan for change: I live for change.

New Year’s Eve has become my time to reconnect with the friends that makes me feel at home. Every year we try to reunite wherever we are and remember the time when we knew each other so well that we felt like a family. It is a moment to reconnect and get to know each other again. Last year, we travelled to a cottage in Ireland where we had no internet and no neighbours. In the middle of the countryside, away from our big and constantly changing lives, we were able to become like a little family again.

This year, we went to Barcelona. It was a very big change. We were surrounded by culture and life and joy. There were bars and parties. It was different, but one thing stayed very much the same-I felt at home again and we felt like a family again.

A lot of people feel that New Year’s Eve cannot live up to expectations. Ideas such as the "New Year's kiss" and "resolutions" create a lot of pressure for people to have a night to remember, a night that will change their lives and perhaps make the next year one worth living. I think those people are missing the point. If Christmas is about family, why can't New Year be about friends?

1.What does the underlined word "It" in Paragraph I probably mean?

A. Family. B. Living abroad.

C. Home. D. Staying with friends.

2.Why doesn't the author care about "New Year's resolutions"?

A. New Year’s resolutions cannot be reached.

B. His lifestyle makes him always ready for change.

C. It's meaningless to make any big changes in life.

D. Making New Year's resolutions creates much pressure.

3.What does the author try to convey through his experiences in Ireland and Barcelona?

A. Life is peaceful and enjoyable.

B. Living abroad is a happy experience.

C. Staying with friends makes one feel at home.

D. Travelling abroad enriches one's life experience.

4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A. New Year's Celebration:How? B. True Friendship: What?

C. Living Abroad: Comfortable or Complicated? D. Change:Plan it or Make it?

One pleasant New-year morning, Edward rose, and washed and dressed himself very quickly.  He wanted to be first to wish everyone a happy New Year. He looked in every room, and shouted the words of welcome. He ran into the street, to repeat them to those he might meet. When he came back, his father gave him two bright, new silver dollars. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore.

He left the house with a light heart, intending to buy the books. As he ran down the street, he saw a poor German family, the father, mother, and three children shivering with cold.

"I wish you a happy New Year," said Edward, as he was happily passing by. The man shook his head. "You do not belong to this country?" said Edward. The man again shook his head, for he could not understand or speak the English language. But he pointed to his mouth, and to the children, as if to say, "These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time." Edward quickly understood that these poor people were in a very difficult situation and required some help. He took out his dollars, and gave one to the man, and the other to his wife.

How their eyes sparkled with gratitude! They said something in their language, which doubtless meant, "We thank you a thousand times, and will remember you in our prayers."

When Edward came home, his father asked what book she had bought. He hung his head a moment, but quickly looked up.  "I have bought no books," said he, "I gave my money to some poor people, who seemed to be very hungry ."

The World Health Organization recently said that it planned to add gaming disorder(游戏成瘾)to its new list of disease classifications, angering the gaming industry but pleasing doctors who hope it may make treatment more easily available.

Some US experts said it would make little difference when it comes to helping people with the disorder, although others said it would bring attention to a disorder that people sometimes don’t recognize. Many of us enjoy video games, but does playing our favorite game for a couple of hours every night mean we’re suffering from gaming disorder? Not, according to the WHO. The symptoms listed by the WHO include a lack of control over gaming, treating gaming more seriously than other life interests and daily activities, and continuing to play games despite the negative consequences that playing them might have. “The behavior pattern is enough to result in significant damage to one’s personal, family, or social life,”the WHO said.

Meanwhile, Douglas Gentile of Iowa State University has carried out influential research into the cause of gaming addiction in young people. “I and many others had assumed that gaming is not really a problem but is a symptom of other problems,”he told NBC News. Many had thought it was simply a failure of self-control.

To see if it wasGentile’s team studied a group of children who had been gaming for several years. “We found that when kids became addictedtheir anxiety increased…and their grades decreased,”Gentile said. When kids were able to back off from gaming, their symptoms disappeared, he added. Gentile thinks medical organizations should pay attention to the WHO’s proposal. “This isn’t an issue of opinion; it’s all issue of science,”he said. “This is a major scientific and medical organization. They don’t do things lightly and without reason.”

Dr Petros Levounis, chair of psychiatry at the New Jersey Medical School at Rutgers University, said that he hoped the WHO’s proposal would lead to more research into obsessive (过度的)behavior among all types of people. “Nowthere is renewed interest and excitement,” he said.

1.Which of the following is a sign of gaming disorder according to the WHO?

A.Putting games before everything else.

B.Keeping playing until winning the games.

C.Playing games for several hours every night.

D.Having a few hobbies besides playing games.

2.Why is Gentile’s research mentioned?

A.To explain the cause of gaming addiction.

B.To show the influence of gaming disorder.

C.To show the reasons behind the WHO’ s decision.

D.To introduce the study that influenced the WHO’s proposal.

3.What can we learn from what Levounis said?

A.It needed further research to make it more convincing.

B.It would do little to help people with gaming addiction.

C.It would encourage new cures for gaming disorder.

D.It would encourage studies about similar diseases.

4.What does the author intend to tell us about gaming disorder?

A.Its description. B.Controversial views.

C.Its harmful effects. D.Explanations of the WHO’s decision.

When John was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him weeding the garden, carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers. But when John reached adulthood,he was better off than his childhood playmates. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all, he was happier. Far happier.

These are the findings of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not. “Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence(能力)and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society, ” said George Vaillant, the psychologist(心理学家)who made the discovery. “And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.”

Vaillant’s study followed these males in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31and 47. Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men’s mental-health scores with their boyhood-activity scores. Points were awarded for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.

The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharp. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out.

Working—at any age—is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence—the underpinnings(基础)of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this. Yet work isn't everything. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one's work.”

1.What do we know about John?

A.He received little love from his family.

B.He had few childhood playmates.

C.He enjoyed his career and marriage.

D.He was envied by others in his childhood.

2.Vaillant’s words in Paragraph 2 serve as _______.

A.a description of personal values and social values

B.an analysis of how work was related to competence

C.an example for parents' expectations of their children

D.an explanation why some boys grew into happy men

3.Vaillant's team got their findings by _______.

A.recording the boys' effort in school

B.comparing different sets of scores

C.evaluating the men's mental health

D.measuring the men's problem solving ability

4.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.Competent adults know more about love than work.

B.Emotional health is essential to a wonderful adult life.

C.Love brings more joy to people than work does.

D.Independence is the key to one's success.

It’s not unusual to see an unreasonable child lying on the ground drumming his heels. Beside him is a desperate mother yelling at the top of her lungs. Raising a well-behaved kid is really a head-scratching thing.

If you took all the parenting styles around the world and ranked them by their gentleness,  the Inuit(因纽特人) approach would certainly rank near the top. All the moms mention one golden role: Don’t shout or yell at small children.Inuit’s no-yelling policy is their central component to raising cool-headed kids. The culture views scolding, or even speaking to children in all angry voice, as inappropriate, although little kids are pushing parents' buttons.

Playful“storytelling”is another trick to sculpting kids’behavior. But this storytelling differs hugely from those fairy tales full of moral lessons. Parents“retell” what happened when a boy threw a tantrum(发脾气)by way of what Shakespeare would understand all too well: putting on a“drama”. After the child has calmed down, the parents will review what happened when the child misbehaved, usually starting with a question: “Can you show us how to throw a tantrum?”Then the child has to think what he should do. If he takes the bait and performs the action, the mom will ask a follow-up question with a playful tone. For example: “Does that seem right?”or“Are you a baby?”She is getting across the idea that“big boys”won’t throw a tantrum.

Kids’brains are still developing the circuitry needed for self-contro1. What you do in response to your children’s emotions shapes their brains. So next time, seeing your boy misbehave, try using the Inuit’s storytelling approach. And don’t forget to keep coo1. After all, boys will be boys.

1.Which of the following best explains“pushing parents’ buttons”underlined in Paragraph 2?

A.Talking with parents. B.Playing with parents’buttons.

C.Exposing parents’faults. D.Making parents annoyed.

2.What do we know about Inuit’s “storytelling”?

A.It aims at playing a trick on kids. B.It raises kids’awareness of morality.

C.It comes after a child misbehaves. D.It analyzes Shakespeare’s dramas.

3.What’s the author’s attitude to children’s misbehavior?

A.Cautious. B.Tolerant.

C.Uncaring. D.Skeptical.

4.What’s the main idea of the text?

A.Inuit’s approach to parenting.

B.Values of reading literary works.

C.Causes of children’s misbehavior.

D.Parents’responses to“storytelling”.

Five steps to better handwriting

Some kids love handwriting, but others hate it when it’s time to put pen to paper. Maybe they are worried about their handwriting. Are you one of them? 1.Here are five steps that really work!

Get a great grasp

Try this — hold your pencil at the top and try to write your name. Pretty hard? But when you hold your pencil the correct way, writing is much easier. 2.Hold it in place with your thumb(拇指), and your index and middle fingers.

Let the lines be your guide

Lined paper is your friend! Those lines can help you create letters that are of the right size and proportion (比例). 3.Also be sure to fill up the lined space completely. Those capital letters should be from the bottom line to the top one.

Slow down

If your writing is hard to read, try slowing down a little. If you rush, it’s hard to control where you stop and start your letters.

Lower the pressure (压力)

4.That makes it harder to make the smooth lines. Try relaxing and don’t hold the pencil too hard.

5.

Lots of games need you to write or draw pictures. So even though it’s not schoolwork, you’re still using the skills you need to control your pencil better.

A.Play games

B.Ask for advice

C.You’ve been writing since you were a little kid.

D.So“a”should be half the height of a capital“A”.

E.Some kids press down really hard when they write.

F.The best way to hold a pencil is to rest it next to the base of your thumb.

G.The good news is that just about everyone can improve their handwriting.

You probably know who Marie Curie was, but you may not have heard of Rachel Carson. Of the outstanding ladies listed below, who do you think was the most important woman of the past 100 years?

Sandra Day O’Connor (1930-present)

When Sandra Day O’Connor finished third in her class at Stanford Law School, in 1952, she could not find work at a law firm because she was a woman. Rosa Parks (1913-2005)

On December 1,1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rasa Parks would not give up her seat on a bus to a passenger. Her simple act landed Parks in prison. But it also set off the Montgomery bus boycott.     With around 100 students scheduled to be in that 9:00 am Monday morning lecture, it is no surprise that almost 20 people actually make it to the class and only 10 of them are still awake after the first 15 minutes; it is not even a surprise that most of them are still in their pajama’s(睡衣). Obviously, students are terrible at adjusting their sleep cycles to their daily schedule.

All human beings possess a body clock. Along with other alerting systems, this governs the sleep/wake cycle and is therefore one of the main processes which govern sleep behaviour. Typically, the preferred sleep/wake cycle is delayed in adolescents, which leads to many students not feeling sleepy until much later in the evenings. This typical sleep pattern is usually referred to as the “night owl” schedule of sleep.

This is opposed to the “early bird” schedule, and is a kind of disorder where the individual tends to stay up much past midnight. Such a person has great difficulty in waking up in the mornings. Research suggests that night owls feel most alert and function best in the evenings and at night. Research findings have shown that about 20 percent of people can be classified as “night owls” and only 10 percent can be classified as “early birds” ------ the other 70 percent are in the middle. Although this is clearly not true for all students, for the ones who are true night owls, this gives them an excellent excuse for missing their lectures which unfortunately fall before midday.

1.What does the author stress in Paragraph 1?

A.Many students are absent from class.

B.Students are very tired on Monday mornings.

C.Students do not adjust their sleep patterns well.

D.Students are not well prepared for class on Mondays.

2.Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 2?

A.Most students prefer to get up late in the morning.

B.Students don’t sleep well because of alerting systems.

C.One’s body clock governs the sleep/wake cycle independently.

D.Adolescents’ delayed sleep/wake cycle isn’t the preferred pattern.

3.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “classified”?

A.Criticized B.Grouped C.Organized D.Named

4.What does the text mainly talk about?

A.Functions of the body clock.

B.The “night owl” phenomenon.

C.Human beings’ sleep behaviour.

D.The school schedule of “early birds”.

I was never very neat, while my roommate Kate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.

War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder.

The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled under her covers, sobbing. Obviously, that was something she should not go through phone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart.

Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didn't notice Kate had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression one of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, “Thanks.”

Kate and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year. We didn't always agree, but we learned the key to living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on.

B.Hard Work Pays Off

How to Find Yourself

Do you often feel lost? Do you think you are living somebody else’s life? If yes, discover ways to find yourself by reading the following article.

1.

If you are thinking how to find yourself when you are lost, then the first thing to do is to have a rest from everything. Give time to yourself to think why you seem lost.

Focus on yourself.

Instead of of being the way others want you to be, be yourself. Think about the things you would want to do, the kind of relationship you would want to be in, the place you would like to stay in and the kind of lifestyle you would like to lead.

2.

Thinking of the happy time or good memories is another way to find yourself. Think what you were doing or with whom you were, when you were the happiest. This will help you to find things that you want to do in life that make you happy.

3.

Once you have found what you want to do with your life, make a change. Even if it means doing small things such as dancing or painting, go ahead and do it. If you want a career change, plan and take measures.

It is very important for you to truly find yourself, before it is too late. If you do not find yourself now, you will spend your life with somebody you do not even know.

A.Take action.

B.Take a break.

C.Accept yourself.

D.Think about the past.

Many people believe that you lose the ability to learn new languages as you get older. Language experts, however, will tell you that you’re never too old to learn a new language. As you get older, it can be more difficult to learn a new language, though.

Children and adults learn new languages in different ways. For children, language is their life. They study for thousands of hours every year, because they need to learn languages to become part of their communities. Adults, on the other hand, are already part of a language community. Learning a new language means becoming part of another language community, and adults rarely get the chance to practice as much as young children do.

Moreover, children learning a new language are expected to make mistakes. This gives them freedom when learning to be daring and confident. Adults, however, often feel pressured to be perfect when learning a new language. This can discourage many people and make it even harder to learn a new language.

When young children learn a new language, they come to see all kinds of languages as a “normal” part of society. This mindset(思维模式)helps them embrace learning a new language without feeling like they’re doing something unusual or “too hard”.

So if you want to learn a new language, go for it! It’s never too late to learn a new language. If you’re older, it may take more work, but it can be done. If you’re a young child, though, now it is the time to step out and learn a new language!

1.By “language is their life” in Paragraph 2, the author means that children ____.

A.can’t live without language

B.lead a happy life every day

C.practice a new language a lot

D.are taken good care of by adults

2.What may make it hard for adults to learn a new language?

A.They often feel pressured.

B.They usually have too many interests.

C.They think making mistakes is natural.

D.They always make all kinds of mistakes.

3.Which of the following shows the difference between children and adults in learning a new language?

A.The behavior they have. B.The learning attitudes.

C.The future plans they have made. D.The materials they are using.

4.According to the author, a new language ______.

A.can never be learned by the old people

B.can be learned by the old people easily

C.can be understood only by the old people

D.can be learned by both the old and the young
