When you eat a traditional ice cream in summer, you need to finish it quickly to make sure the treat doesn’t end up melting down your hand. Reach for an ice cream sandwich instead, and you’ll, find the ice cream stays solid longer magically. An ice cream that refuses to melt seems unnatural, but you might be surprised by what’s really behind its practically heatproof (耐热的) abilities.

Ice cream without a proper container in the fridge would lead to ice blocks because of its water content. Most ice cream contains some elements called emulsifiers (乳化剂) that can keep water to fat to prevent ice blocks. They go a step further by helping to keep ice cream consistent, even under the hot sun. On an element list, you might find different chemicals with the same goal: to hold water in so the ice cream doesn’t melt quickly. Ice cream sandwiches generally contain more of those chemicals including emulsifiers than hand-made ones.

If you’re worried about some additives (添加剂) in ice cream sandwiches f which might belong in a lab rather than your kitchen, then you’d better be at ease. Even completely natural elements, which come from beans, might make you stop eating if you’ve heard about their misuse in weight-loss efforts.

Of course, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) takes any of the side effects of those chemicals into account, and the amount you’d find in an ice cream sandwich isn’t enough to cause health problems. While you meet someone willing to share his ice cream sandwiches with your kid, there’s no reason to fear your kid’s health safety. A slow melt rate method causes you less worry.

1.Why would ice cream without a proper container in the fridge become ice blocks?

A.It is too big and thick. B.It has freezing medium in it.

C.It contains some water in it. D.It doesn’t have enough cream.

2.Which one is the function of emulsifiers in ice cream sandwiches?

A.To keep the ice cream stay consistent.

B.To cover the ice cream to avoid sunlight.

C.To let the ice cream sandwiches taste better.

D.To protect the ice cream by keeping water out.

3.What does the author intend to express in paragraph 3?

A.Natural elements from beans are bad for health.

B.Additives should be avoided during losing weight.

C.The additives in ice cream sandwiches arc harmless.

D.Emulsifiers in ice cream can make people become fat.

4.What’s the author’s attitude towards kids’ eating ice cream sandwiches?

A.Approving. B.Worried.

C.Opposed. D.Doubtful.

Que Liu and his wife Si En spend their mornings picking Pu’er leaves in a forest not far from their village in the highlands of southwest China.

Pu’er is a kind of tea that is famous for its complex taste. Tea lovers say its taste changes with each following steeping (续泡). But the crop this year has been small at Nannuoshan, one of the six major Pu’er mountains in Yunnan Province. The hottest weather and lowest rainfall totals in years have reduced production. “Drought has cut production by about half this spring,” said Zi Sai, the son of Que Liu and Si En.

Local officials blame climate change for an increase in drought-like conditions in recent years. The dry weather has worsened over the past 20 years, with this year’s drought breaking some records. “The entire rainfall pattern has changed due to global warming,” said Xiao Chan, head of weather services at China’s National Climate Center in Beijing.

Pu’er trees grow in the cloud-covered forests of Yunnan. The trees require no fertilizers or pesticides (农药), unlike the tea trees grown on large farms elsewhere. The adult plant normally reaches a height of four meters. Spring produces the highest-quality leaves from the trees. The summer harvest, with a higher percentage of water, is considered to be lower in quality. Summer leaves are sold for mass consumption.

The drought conditions hurt the economy of the 32 villages of Nannuoshan. “My family depends wholly on Pu’er tea for survival, earning about 200,000 yuan a year,” said Zi Sai’s uncle, Si Da, who is 44. “That represents just over $28,000. This year, our income has been cut by tens of thousands of yuan.”

While one ancient tree, said to date from 800 years ago, survived the drought, other younger trees did not. “If these kinds of trees survive, they may need three to five years for a full recovery.” Si Da added. “These trees are quite pitiful. They should have been protected like children.”

1.How is the climate in the Pu’er tea planting areas in recent years?

A.It is too wet. B.It is much colder.

C.It is changing regularly, D.It is becoming much drier.

2.What’s the advantage of Pu’er trees compared with the tea trees planted on other big farms?

A.They are short and small. B.They are pollution-free.

C.They grow on large farms. D.They are picked at all seasons.

3.What does Si Da think of the younger tea trees?

A.They were easy to live on.

B.They should have been taken good care of.

C.They took only a short time to fully recover.

D.They had better be cut down to earn money.

4.What is the main idea of the text?

A.The extreme weather ruins tea farms.

B.Famous tea in China might disappear.

C.Few tea trees survive natural disasters.

D.Drought hurts Pu’er tea crops in China.

In the year 2017, the world lost many great musicians. Their deaths were felt over the world and country music star Keith Lionel Urban honored these musicians in a very special way. During a New Year’s Eve concert, Keith talked about all the greats that passed away and how some of them were music and life coaches or examples to him. That was when Keith decided to put together a mixture of songs from all of these artists.

At the concert, pictures of some of the most eminent people in the music industry appeared across the screen. As their pictures appeared, Keith sang the songs that the artists were best-known for. Each performance was truly moving, and the audience loved it. Instead of thinking it was a sad moment, everyone was able to think about how much joy these artists brought to the music industry.

Keith sang a few lines from songs by Chris Cornell, Gregg Allman, Chuck Berry, Don Williams, Glen Campbell and Troy Gentry. The audience cheered aloud whenever he changed from one song to another. It was amazing how smoothly he played through the different styles of music. It was a perfect interpretation of his gift.

When he got to the final song, he invited his wife to join him on stage to dance and close out the night. Then his two daughters joined their parents. It was really an unforgettable performance.

Music truly has the ability to touch a special place in our hearts and even if we do not know these artists personally, their songs have meant a lot to many of us. I am sure those artists would have been so proud to hear him sing their music. It is a way to honor those late artists and celebrate the joy they brought to our lives!

1.Keith got the idea of honoring the great musicians when he ________.

A.saw their pictures at a concert B.heard a song of a lost musician

C.knew their stories from his coaches D.talked about their influence on him

A.Controversial. B.Outstanding.

C.Shallow. D.Modest.

3.What did the author say about Keith’s performance?

A.It showed his musical talent,

B.It did not show his real style.

C.It made the audience feel sad about the musicians’ deaths.

D.It set a good example to other artists and musicians.

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.Keith’s Little Secret

B.Keith’s Sad Moment

C.Keith’s New Year s Wishes to Artists Worldwide

D.Keith’s Way to Say Goodbye to Late Musicians

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

David and Roy decided to go for a bicycle ride with three other students: Robert, Helen and Betty. But Robert’s father couldn’t afford to buy a bike for him. So they were going to borrow one for him.

The students had planned to meet at 8 o’clock. But Robert, Helen and Betty were half an hour late, for they had to come a long way since they found the bridge over the stream had been washed away.

When they told the bad news to David and Roy, David said nothing and kept silent for a moment. After a while, an idea came into his mind. “Do you think we could rebuild it?”

All of them agreed and started to consider this seriously. They decided to rebuild the bridge before they went for the bicycle ride. Betty said she could ask her brother to make a plan for them.

The biggest problem was to get enough wood. The next day they visited nearly every house in the village. Mr. Robinson agreed to supply the wood so long as they did the work. Several people promised to give money if they could build a new bridge because it was a short cut for them.

The students worked for nearly a week under Mr. Robinson’s guidance. At the end of a

week of hard work, the bridge was completed. They all agreed to ask Mr. Robinson to officially open the bridge. “He has helped us most,” David said.

“And tomorrow morning we can go around to all the houses,” added Roy, “and tell the people that the bridge will be officially opened at six o’clock. Then we can remind them about their promises about money,” Roy added.

“But we don’t really want that, do we?” said Robert.

“Yes,” said Helen. “We need it and I think we should collect it.” She glanced quickly at the others, who nodded.

The next day, the students visited all the houses again. They were surprised when they saw how pleased the people were with them. By two o’clock they had collected over a hundred dollars. By five o’clock, unknown to Robert, they had spent it.

You have the grades, the test scores, and the English proficiency (水平) to get into college in the United States. 1.

In the US, scores alone can’t guarantee a place at a college. Indeed, it’s normal for admissions (招生) officers to turn away students who have high scores. This is where the essay comes in. 2.

This is your opportunity to show the admissions committee the person behind those numbers– the real you. 3. No matter what your topic is, the essay should not be a description of events. It should say something you’ve learned about life.

Here is what Harvard’s Dean of Admissions is looking for in an essay: how well you can think; whether you have a questioning nature; whether you are open to ideas; whether you have a unique way to express your ideas. No matter how great your English is, your ideas and the ability to connect them to events will distinguish you among the other applicants.

4.

Some students use cliches (陈词滥调) like “expanding my horizons (眼界)”, which are so overused. Colleges would think you don’t care enough to make original phrases. The worst is plagiarizing (抄袭). It’s the easiest way to get rejected. Only lazy students copy and paste other’s works such as some internet resources called “successful essays”. Finally, beware of empty words. 5. If a college asks “Why this college?”, don’t reply weightless words like “for football games on campus”.

A.And many experts agree with this.

E.When students don’t know what to say, they often make it up with meaningless things.

F.Sometimes, essay makes no difference.

G.You can show your character, values, beliefs and aspirations (抱负).

Joseph Goldberger was a doctor for the United States Public Health Service and he was an advocate for scientific and social recognition of the links between poverty and disease. In 1914, Goldberger was asked by US Surgeon General Rupert Blue to study a skin disease that was killing thousands of people in the South. The disease was pellagra (糙皮病)

Goldberger traveled to the state of Mississippi where many people suffered from pellagra. He studied the victims and their families. Most of the people lived a hard life. The doctor came to believe that the disease didn’t pass on from one to another, but was instead related to food. He received permission from the state governor to test this idea at a prison. Prisoners were offered pardons if they took part. One group of prisoners received their usual foods, mostly corn products. A second group ate meat, fresh vegetables and drank milk. Members of the first group developed pellagra. The second group did not.

But some medical researchers refused to accept Goldberger’s idea. For the South, pellagra was more than simply a medical problem. There were other things, including Southern pride.

So Goldberger had himself injected (注射) with blood from a person with pellagra. He also took liquid from the nose and throat of a pellagra patient and put them into his own nose and throat. He even swallowed pills that contained skin from pellagra patients. An assistant also took part in the experiments. So did Goldberger’s wife. None of them got sick.

Joseph Goldberger died of cancer in 1929. He was fiftyfive years old. Several years later, researchers discovered the exact cause of pellagra: a lack of vitamin B3 known as niacin.

1.Who were likely to get pellagra according to Goldberger?

A.People in the south of America.

B.People having a poor diet.

C.People in prison.

D.People touching pellagra patients.

2.What did Goldberger want to prove by the experiments mentioned in Paragraph 4?

A.Pellagra wasn’t so terrible.

B.Pellagra could be cured.

C.Pellagra didn’t spread.

D.Pellagra wasn’t a medical problem.

3.Why did some medical researchers refuse to accept Goldberger’s idea?

A.Goldberger’s idea sounds ridiculous.

B.They have done their own research.

C.The result hurt their pride.

D.Goldberger didn’t do enough research.

4.Which words can be used to describe Goldberger?

A.Selfless and friendly. B.Devoted and determined.

C.Patient and expert. D.Stubborn and enthusiastic.

Just a year ago, the colors were bright under the waves. Now it’s gray — the Maldivian reef is dead. The coral is killed by the pressure of rising temperatures.

Coral reefs are areas underwater where small creatures live. The coral is hard material formed on the bottom of the sea by the skeletons of those creatures. But the world has lost about half its coral reefs in the last 30 years. Scientists are working to prevent their destruction. Due to global warming, over 90 percent of corals are expected to die by 2050. “To lose coral reefs is to fundamentally undermine the health of a very large proportion of the human race,” said Ruth Gates, director of the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology.

Why are coral reefs important? Coral reefs support a fourth of all marine species, as well as half a billion people worldwide. They serve as barriers to protect coastlines from the storms. They provide billions of dollars from tourism, fishing and other trade. They are also used in medical research for cures for diseases. “Everyone should be concerned,” said biologist Ove Guldberg at Australia’s University of Queensland. “This is not just some distant dive destination. This is the basic structure of the ecosystem we depend on.”

The ocean is getting warmer. A rising temperature of just one to two degree Celsius can force coral to expel the algae (驱逐海藻) that live there. This leaves their white skeletons uncovered. It is a process called “bleaching”. Sixteen percent of the world’s corals died of bleaching in 1998. The problem has become much worse in recent years.

“We’ve lost 50 percent of the reefs, but that means we still have 50 percent left,” said Ruth Gates, who is working in Hawaii to breed corals that can better withstand increasing temperatures. She is also trying to “train” corals to survive rising temperatures. Gates says it is time to start “thinking outside the box”— find creative ways to help them.

1.What does the underlined word “undermine” in paragraph 2 mean?

A.Regain B.Weaken

C.Promote D.Develop

2.What can we learn from Ove Guldberg’ words?

A.People won’t find a dive destination in the future.

B.The effort to save corals will turn out to be fruitless.

C.The bright sea has lost its charm because of those dead corals.

D.The destruction of coral reefs will affect the earth ecosystem.

3.What’s the fourth paragraph mainly about?

A.The harm of algae. B.The importance of coral reefs.

“O gentle sleep!\Nature’s soft nurse, how have I frightened thee\That thou no more wilt weigh my eyelids down.”Henry IV, as portrayed by Shakespeare, would have sympathized with people who struggle with insomnia (失眠). Now a major publisher has come up with a novel idea.

In a project to be launched this week, Penguin Random House has cooperated with the Sleep Council and the Children’s Sleep Charity in creating collections of “Sleep Tales” for adults and children. Combining “cutting-edge technology and the ancient art of storytelling to help solve an age-old problem”, these audiobooks are part soundscape, part descriptive narrative, with softly spoken voices to calm anxieties and take listeners to the land of nod.

Each story lasts about 15 minutes, enabling listeners to set their sleep timer. The stories draw on the Sleep Council’s research into sounds that help people wind down, such as waves lapping on a shore, soft rainfall and birdsong.

Richard Lennon, publisher at Penguin Audio, told the Guardian the project was inspired partly by the realization that increasing numbers of people were listening to audio books “as they’re going to sleep or as part of their bedtime routine”. He said both adults and children respond to something comforting and familiar as they are nodding off.

Asked whether a boring story could have the same effect, he said the stories needed to be “engaging enough not to put you off”: “This is about creating the right environment and headspace for you … to go to sleep. Strangely, if you’re bored, it doesn’t have that effect.” Audience research had been very positive, Lennon said. One listener reported: “The story made my mind stop racing.”

From Antigua to Zanzibar, these spots promise an incredible trip for 2019.

Antigua, Guatemala

“Antigua is worth every penny, but that doesn’t mean you’ll have to empty your wallet,” says Hudson. There are plenty of budget-conscious activities. It won’t cost you a coin to visit Santo Domingo del Cerro, an outdoor sculpture park. Wanting something sweet? Head to ChocoMuseo. Admission is free and so are the samples!

Odessa, Ukraine

Odessa is having a bit of a tourism boom nationwide-not that we’re surprised, given its sandy beaches and pastel-colored buildings-but it’s still fairly under the order for international audiences. You can also count on this port city for affordable fun. Tickets to the Odessa Opera House start at a mere $ 2!

Bogotá, Colombia

“Travelers on budget will find Colombia’s vast capital far more of a bargain and every bit as fascinating,” says Hudson. “It’s free to visit Museo de Oro and on Sundays many of the big roads are closed to accommodate food carts, street entertainers, and pedestrians.”

Zanzibar

Zanzibar attracts vacationers with its white sand beaches, greenish-blue tides, colorful coral reefs, and oceanfront seaside. Of course, wandering in historic Stone Town is pretty appealing too. Either way, you needn’t spend a penny in this amazing place. It’s also worth noting that Jozani Forest is the only place in the world you can see endangered red colobus monkeys.

What kind of amusing activities will you participate in during your life? Will you be spending your free time doing safe sports with little danger or will you always be one of the first people to try the next popular extreme activity? Scientists have been interested in finding out why some people seem to prefer dangerous activities.

Although there are exceptions, researchers have found that in most cases men are less cautious than women. Men often try to impress women by proving that they are courageous and fearless, and they are more likely to take risks when women are watching them or when they are competing against other men.

Research also shows that as people get older they usually behave more responsibly and avoid taking unnecessary risks. In addition, when people are in stable relationships, they seem to be less attracted to daring activities.

Some people seem to be more daring than others, but there are many different types of risks and some people take one type of risk, but not another Psychologists have identified a number of categories of risk. These include financial risks, risks related to health and safety, amusing risks and social risks. Psychologists discover that some people will take risks in one area, but not in another. Just if a person enjoys bungee (蹦极) jumping, it doesn't mean he or she will take chances when investing (投资) money or that he will tell a joke to a group of strangers.

Interestingly, research shows that women take more social risks than men. They are more likely to make career changes as they get older and to express unpopular opinions in business meetings.

Yet, at the end of the day, the likelihood of particular people taking a risk depends on their personalities. In general, optimistic people are more likely to take risks because they focus on the possible positive outcomes of their actions. On the other hand, those with opposite personality are much more likely to avoid taking a chance.

1.What have researchers discovered about women?

A.They are always changing jobs. B.They are good at doing business.

C.They are more willing to take risks. D.They are more conservative than men.

2.Why do men try to prove they are brave?

A.To attract women to watch them. B.To have favorable effects on women.

C.To announce risks are too dangerous. D.To show their strength to the competitor.

3.What mainly determine whether people take risks possibly?

A.The potential consequences. B.Their characters.

C.Their problems of finance. D.The focuses of their work.

4.What is the text mainly talking about?

A.People's sense of taking risks. B.Risks at people's different ages.

C.Different types of people's risks. D.Risks between men and women.

Dr. Faisal Zawawi, an Otolaryngologist and member of the McGill Auditory Sciences Laboratory, notes that when a person is exposed to loud noises it can cause short-term hearing loss but that under normal circumstances the body typically is able to repair the loss of hearing within 72 hours. However, Zawawi warns that if symptoms are not reversed (倒转) in the first 72 hours the damage could become permanent. Due to findings in previous studies about it, Zawawi says that the team of researchers has suspected that something may stop this repair process; therefore, the team set out to determine if caffeine could be a contributing cause to hearing loss. According to the Medical Daily, the researchers tested what they suspected on female guinea pigs(FGP) (豚鼠).

To perform the test, 24 female guinea pigs were split into three equal groups with each group exposed in different levels to caffeine, and loud noises. The researchers found that the guinea pigs subjected to only sound had their full hearing recovered by day eight. However, the guinea pigs that were subjected to both caffeine and loud noise never fully regained their hearing. Thereforethe researchers concluded that caffeine is a likely contributing cause to permanent hearing loss.

“This research confirms that while a cup of coffee may seem appealing after a long night at a loud concert, drinking caffeine produces more of a risk than benefit when it comes to a person's hearing. Although further research is required to understand the effect on humans, the results are promising," says Zawawi. If the research proves successful, the removal of caffeine from your diet following noise exposure could prevent permanent hearing loss as the body will be more able to repair itself naturally.

1.What caused the team to do the research?

A.Caffeine loving people suffering hearing loss.

B.The results about hearing loss found before.

C.The finding that FGPs are sensitive to noise.

D.The fact that many people drink coffee.

2.What is Zawawi's view about temporary hearing loss?

A.Drinking coffee daily results in it.

B.Drink less coffee while suffering it.

C.Generally people can recover from it in 3 days.

D.The continuous noise exposure surely causes it.

3.What can we learn about hearing from the text?

A.Coffee can stop it from recovering.

B.Coffee Can lead to quick hearing loss.

C.Hearing loss after noise exposure is normal.

D.Loud noise causes people to lose it forever.

4.How does Zawawi assess the research?

A.It's controversial. B.It's unnecessary to carry it on.

C.It's not predictable. D.It's almost successful.

Many of my summer, childhood adventures were related to that classic American experience of the family road trip.

We visited Carlsbad Caverns when we took a trip out west so my father could look for work. A concrete tent called “tepee” by American Indians, which we spent the night in, has stuck in my mind. This was at Wigwam Village Motel in Holbrook, Arizona, on Route 66. The city was founded in 188 l, when the railroad was built, and named to honor the first chief engineer of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. I slept on an army type bed just below the attractive air conditioner.

Another time, our family took our summer vacation at a small wooden house that belonged to one of my father 's friends for a couple of years in the Adirondacks. We had to take everything we needed up a steep hill to the house that you couldn't see from the road that passed in front of it. There was no mailbox and the only indication that there might be something there was a small courtyard where you could park a car. We had packed all the food and clothing we would need for one week. After all, it wasn't like there was a Walmart nearby.

The week's entertainment consisted of catching insects and snakes and playing in the small lake that was across the road from the house. I have never seen water as pristine (清澈) since. I would catch small fish by hand and set them free. Seven days passed before I knew it!

These trips are our family's history. We were making our, own history and placing the historical markers of our lives along the road.

A.He enjoyed it very much.

B.He wasn't well prepared for it.

C.He found it inconvenient to stay there.

D.He considered it environment-friendly.

A.Lessons from my family B.Childhood adventures.

C.Summer family vacation D.Happy memories
