During these days, the United States is full of cars. There are still some families without cars, but some families have two or more ones. 1.They are also a necessary part of life.

Cars are used for business. They are driven to offices and factories by workers who have no other way to get to their jobs. When salesmen are sent to different parts of the city, they have to drive in order to carry their products. 2.

Sometimes small children must be driven to school. In some cities school buses are used only when children live more than a mile away from the school. 3.  One mother drives on Mondays taking her own children and the neighbors’ as well. Another mother drives on Tuesdays, another on Wednesdays, and so on. 4.  Men also form car pools, with three or four men taking turns driving to the place where they all work.

5. So more car pools should be formed in order to put fewer cars on the road and use less gas. Too many cars will lead to some problems such as accidents or environmental pollution. Something will have to be done about the use of cars. And the government should encourage the citizens to decrease the use of their cars as much as they can.

A. Too many cars are being driven.

B. This is called forming a car pool.

C. Cars are used for more than pleasure.

D. You can choose your car according to the use of it.

E. Farmers have to drive into the city in order to get supplies.

F. Still, it is not safe for young children to take the school bus.

G. When children are too young to walk too far, their mothers take turns driving them to school.

Nowadays, the most effective way to get power comes from burning fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas. They are less costly than other forms of energy. But burning fuels releases carbon dioxide, known as CO2 gas. Scientists agree that increasing amount of CO2 in Earth’s atmosphere is partly to blame for the rising temperature. It's clear the change in the atmosphere can have a big effect on the weather condition around the world.

However, keeping extra CO2 from entering the atmosphere is a difficult process. It’s not enough to advise people to burn the fuels in a clean way. As a result, scientists are looking for the best method for capturing the gas and storing it away from the atmosphere. Some of this research is taking place in Norway. The Technology Center in Mongstad (TCM) is the largest facility in the world for major testing of the CO2-capturing technology.

Tore Amundsen is its chairman. He says TCM has produced important information since it opened. The center is connected to a nearby electric power plant. It treats the waste gas from the plant using the chemical solvent (溶剂) which attracts the CO2 molecules. Then researchers take the solvent with the CO2 molecules and boil it. In this way, they can separate CO2 from the solvent and use the solvent again to capture more CO2. TCM can help capture 90 percent of the CO2 from the waste gas. With the current state of technology, it will increase the cost of electricity between perhaps 30% to 40% when the technology is applied to a power plant.

Experts say the best way to store the captured CO2 gas is to place it below the surface of the ground. Scientists can use the pumping technology to put it into areas left empty after the removal of oil or natural gas. But TCM does not pump the CO2 it captures. Instead, it releases the gas into the atmosphere. Tore Amundsen says only highly developed industrial nations can afford the pumping technology. So far, only Canada has a power plant that pumps CO2 gas. In total, there are just a few similar power plants in the world.

1.What can we learn about the CO2 gas?

A.It is usually found in coal.

B.It leads to world climate change.

C.It is a new kind of energy.

D.It does good to the atmosphere.

2.Scientists want to deal with CO2 gas by_________.

A.sending it into the atmosphere

B.finding clean fuels to use

C.collecting it with technology

D.stopping people from burning fuels

3.Which of the following is TRUE about TCM?

A.It works well in treating the waste gas.

B.It’s the only center to study the CO2 gas.

C.It was set up by Tore Amundsen.

D.It helps the power plant save a lot of money.

4.According to experts, the captured CO2 gas________.

A.can be used with oil or natural gas

B.should be put underground

C.must be allowed to go into the air

D.should stay in the chemical solvent

Let us suppose it is now about A. D. 2063. Let’s make believe it is about fifty years from now. Of course, things have changed and life is very different.

Voyages to the moon are being made every day. It is as easy to take a holiday on the moon today as it was for the people in 1960 to take a holiday in Europe. At a number of scenic spots on the moon, many hotels have been built. The hotels are air-conditioned, naturally. In order that everyone can enjoy the beautiful scenery on the moon, every room has at least one picture window. Everything imaginable is provided for entertainment of the young and the old.

What are people eating now? People are still eating food. But many foods now come in pill form, and the food that goes into the pill continues to come mainly from green plants.

Since there are several times as many people in the world today as there were a hundred years ago, most of our planet’s surface has to be filled. The deserts are irrigated with water and crops are no longer destroyed by pests. The harvest is always good.

Farming, of course, is very highly developed. Very few people have to work on the farm. It is possible to run the farm by just pushing a few buttons now and then.

People are now largely vegetarians. You see, as the number of people increases, the number of animals decreases. Therefore, the people have to be vegetarians and we are healthier both in our bodies and in our minds, and we know the causes and cure of disease and pain, and it is possible to get rid of diseases. No one has to be ill any more.

Such would be our life in 2063.

Learning English is of great valuable. English is widely used all over the world. It was often used in the international meetings. Most business letters are writing in English. With a help of English we can learn modern science and technology from developed country. We can also introduce our achievement and experience to other countries. Because its importance, English is a requiring subject in high schools and colleges. Now many people are working hardly at English. It’s very important to learn English well. Unless we learn English well, we can not serve for our country better. So I suggest most Chinese learned it well.

Keeping a diary in English is a 1.(use) way to improve our English writing abilities.

Compared with other forms of writing, it is shorter and takes 2.(little) time than them. It can help us to develop the habit of thinking in English. If we insist on this practice, gradually we’ll learn how to express 3.(we) in English. Keeping a diary in English, we certainly run up against many difficulties. In the first place, it often happens that we have trouble in4.(find) proper words and phrases to give expression to our mind. Secondly, there5.(be) many idiomatic words in Chinese. And6.is extremely hard for us to put them into English7.(proper).

As far as I am concerned, my suggestion is 8.we should always have a notebook and Chinese-English-dictionary within easy reach. Whenever something beats us, we can first put it down in our notebook and then look up our dictionary. We can also turn to our English teacher for help, if necessary. In short, I believe that it is very useful to keep diary9. English for the development of our writing10.(skill).

Happiness is a choice. For every minute you are angryyou lose 60 seconds of happiness. Be happy. Be yourself. If others don't like itthen let them be.1.

Begin today by taking responsibility for your own satisfaction. Here are four ways to choose happiness:

1.2. Give it your all in everything you dobe devoted to your goalsand don't compare yourself to anyone else. Never try to be better than anyone else. If you feel called to compare yourself to someonecompare yourself to an earlier version of yourself.

2. Be around the right people.3. Life is too short to spend time with people who suck the happiness out of you. When you free yourself from negative peopleyou free yourself to be YOU-and being YOU is the only way to truly live.

3. Help others when you're able. Care about people. In lifeyou get what you put in.4. Do something that's greater than you-something that helps someone else to be happy or to suffer less.

4. Let go when you know you should. Sometimes you have to be strong for yourself. Love is worth fighting forbut you can't be the only one fighting. People need to fight for you too. If they don'tyou eventually have to move on and realize that what you gave them was more than they were willing to give you.5. If you try to force them back together things will only get worse. Holding on is being bravebut letting go and moving on is often what makes us stronger and happier.

A. Choose to be the best YOU can be.

B. Life isn't about pleasing everybody.

C. Relationships should help you, not hurt you.

D. Focus on what you have, not on what you haven't.

E. Some relationships and situations just can't be fixed.

F.A positive influence on others means a positive one on your own.

G. No one else has the power to make you feel small unless you give them the power.

Have you ever had the experience of talking to someone and you think they are lying? Well, you are not alone. We’ve all had that feeling. But did you know that there are several things you can look for to see if you are being lied to?

Sometimes you can tell if a person is lying by observing what they do with their body. When people are lying they tend not to move their arms, hands or legs very far from their body. They don’t want to take up very much space because they don t want to be noticed. Sometimes a person who is lying will not look you in the eyes. Other times people who lie try to look at you in a strong way because they want to convince you they are telling the trugh.

Liars also use deflection. For example, if you ask a liar the question “Did you steal Fatima’s bag?” they may answer with something like “Fatima is my friend. Why would I do that?” In this situation the person is telling the truth, but they are also not answering the question. They are trying to deflect your attention. Liars may also give too many details. They may try to over-explain things. They do this because they want to convince you of what they are saying.

Often when a person is lying, they do not want to continue talking about their lie. If you think someone is lying, quickly change the subject. If the person is lying, they will spear more comfortable because they are not talking about their lie any longer. A little later, change the subject back to what you were talking about before. If the person seems uncomfortable again, they may be lying.

It’s very hard for a liar to avoid filling silence created by you. He or she wants you to believe the lies being woven; silence gives no feedback on whether or not you’ve bought the story. If you’re a good listener, you’ll already be avoiding interruptions, which in itself is a great technique to let the story unfold.

Just because a person is showing these behaviors, it does not mean they are lying. They might be shy or nervous. But, if you think someone is lying, you might want to use some of these techniques. Hopefully, you won’t need to very often.

1.According to the passage, a person could be lying he or she ________.

A. offers more information than necessary

B. appears to be shy or nervous

C. the subject of the conversation

D. speaks very fast and vaguely

2.Which of the following can be learned from the passage?

A. Liars always try to avoid direct eye contact when they tell lies.

B. We can make people lie by changing the subject in a conversation.

C. Liars are often expansive in hand and arm movements while talking.

D. We make liars uncomfortable by giving no feedback in a conversation.

3.The passage mainly talks about ________.

A. who deceives us B. why people tell lies

C. how to detect lies D. what to do with liars

In many ways, Alma Deutscher is like other 11-year-olds. She loves to climb trees, dance, read, and draw. But Alma, who lives in Dorking, England, can claim one very special achievement. She has composed a full opera and brought it to the stage. Her opera, a retelling of Cinderella (灰姑娘), premiered (首次演出) in December 2016, in Vienna, Austria.

“I’ve loved Cinderella since I was 3,” Alma said. But she felt the story needed an improvement. “I didn’t like the thing about the shoe,” she says. “Why should the prince find her because of her feet?”

In Alma’s version (版本), Cinderella is a composer. She creates a melody (旋律) that she sings to the prince before fleeing the ball. “He remembers the beginning but not how it went on,” Alma says. The prince realizes that only Cinderella would know how the melody continues. He uses that knowledge to find her.

Alma began writing the opera when she was 8. It premiered to a sold-out crowd on December 29, 2016, and got a standing ovation (起立鼓掌). Alma played the piano and violin and performed in the show. “It was something that was completely inside my head, in my imagination, and then it came to life,” Alma says.

Alma says she is certain that music will remain a major part of her life. “I have lots of things that I want to compose,” she says. “The first one is a piano concerto (协奏曲). Then I’m writing a novel, and I want to write a movie based on it, and the music for that.”

She also has advice for kids who want to achieve their big dreams. “It’s a lot of work to reach a high level,” Alma says. “But if you love what you are doing, it doesn’t feel like hard work. Don’t let anyone stop you from doing it.”

A. The prince finds Cinderella because of her shoes.

B. The prince finds Cinderella because of a melody.

C. The prince sings a melody to Cinderella before her fleeing the ball.

3.How is the performance of Alma’s Opera Cinderella?

A. It lives up to audience’s expectation.

B. It sets a good example for other kids.

C. It turns out to be a great success.

D. It is something in Alma’s imagination.

4.What can we learn from Alma’s advice to other kids?

Yesterday, I went to the largest bookstore where is near our school to buy a reference book. It was Saturday, so there was many people.     Easy Ways to Improve Your Mood

1.Taking an extra moment for yourself will make your day brighter and give you a healthier outlook on life. Here are some simple ways you can bring a little happiness into your life right now:

Go for a walk.

Just a little bit of exercise can improve your mood and give you a fresh perspective on problems that have been bothering you. Think walks are boring? 2.Take a trip to the mall, or even walk to get some frozen yogurt. Make it a fun trip and you’ll surely make it part of your routine.

3.

After all, laughter is the best medicine. Pick up something that makes you laugh like a funny picture, book, magazine, or a DVD of your favorite comedy. 4. Giving yourself time to laugh increases feel-good endorphins(胺多酚).

5.

Take a photo of yourself doing something you enjoy, like roller skating, skiing, swimming, playing an instrument, or being with friends and family. Place the picture on your desk to remind yourself that you lead an amazing life and have lots to be happy about.

A. Model behavior.

B. Buy something silly.

C. Ten minutes of relaxation can do wonders.

D. Try walking to a place that seems exciting to you.

E. You could even plan a date night out to a comedy club.

F. Tell someone that you’re guaranteed to brighten their day.

G. Even the most optimistic people can use a mood boost every once in a while.

When I was a kid, I used to spend hours listening to Adam Carolla and Dr. Drew Pinsky on their Sunday night radio show Loveline. I listened so often that I began to use one of their well-known phrases — “good times” — in my daily conversations. Scientists have a name for this phenomenon: behavioral mimicry.

You’ve probably experienced this before: after spending enough time with another person, you might start to pick up on his or her behavior or speech habits. You might even start to develop your friend’s habits without realizing it. There is a large body of literature concerning this sort of phenomenon, and it regularly happens for everything from body gesture to accents to drink patterns (模式). For example, one study found that young adults were more likely to drink their drink directly after their same-sex drinking partners, than for the two individuals to drink at their own paces.

And the effect isn’t limited to real-life face-to-face activities. Another study found that the same you-drink-then-I-drink pattern held even when watching a movie! In other words, people were more likely to take a drink of their drinks in a theater after watching the actors on the screen enjoy a drink. At least I don’t feel so strange anymore, having picked up on Adam Carolla’s “good times”.

New research published today in the journal PLOS ONE indicates that the same sort of behavioral mimicry is responsible for social eating, at least among university-age women of normal weight. That’s right: the young women were more likely to adjust their eating according to the eating pace of their same-sex dining companion.

As with most experiments, these results raise a whole new set of questions. However, the finding that behavioral mimicry may at least partly explain eating behavior is important, and has real effects on health. The researchers note that “as long as people don’t fully recognize such important influences on intake (eating), it will be difficult to make healthy food choices and keep a healthy diet, especially when people are exposed to the eating behavior of others”.

1.The author takes his own example of using “good times” to_______.

A.show the influence of the hosts’ words B.express his love for radio shows

C.prove the popularity of the show D.introduce the topic of the passage

2.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that _______.

A.behavioral mimicry is beneficial to our health

B.behavioral mimicry decides our eating behavior

C.people have realized the effect of behavioral mimicry on our health

D.It’s impossible to keep a healthy diet without knowing behavioral mimicry

3.What is probably the author’s purpose of writing this passage?

A.To introduce behavioral mimicry and its influence.

B.To appeal to readers not to fall into others’ habits.

C.To advocate healthy food choices among readers.

D.To draw readers’ attention to popular radio shows.

Warm water freezes more quickly than cold water. Sir Francis Bacon said that almost four hundred years ago. But few people believed him until 1970. In that year a Canadian scientist George Kill proved the English professor was right. Dr Kill filled an open oil pail () with cold water. He filled another with warm water. He put both in the same low temperature. The warm water froze first. The lack of covers on the pails is the secret. Some of the warm water changed into vapor. This meant that less of the warm water was left to be frozen. And so the warm water froze faster than the cold water even though it had a greater temperature drop to make.

1.Hundreds of years ago, Sir Francis Bacon found _______.

A.the temperature of warm water drops faster than that of cold water

B.warm water is heavier than cold water

C.warm water has the same temperature as cold water

D.warm water is not as useful as cold water

2.Leave a pail with warm water and another pail with cold water in the same low temperature, you’ll find that _______.

A.cold water freezes first

B.warm water turns into ice before cold water

C.warm water and cold water freeze at the same time

D.much of cold water is changed into air.

3.Why does warm water freeze first in the same freezing weather? _______

A.Because some of the warm water turns to vapor, the amount becomes less than that of cold water.

B.Because warm water is lighter than cold water.

C.Because the temperature of warm water is lower than that of cold water.

D.Because cold water freezes with more difficulty than warm water.

Dear Sir,

I have to travel every day from Souk Road to the airport. Two buses travel along their route: the number 49 and number 16. But by the time the number 16 bus reaches Souk Road it is always full, so I can’t get on it. I have to wait for the number 49, because sometimes there are empty seats on it.

The timetable says that there are buses from Souk Road to the airport every ten minutes. If this is so, why do I have to wait half an hour for a bus nearly every day?

The regulations (规章) say that if there are empty seats on a bus, the bus must stop at every stop where people are waiting. Why do the half-empty buses go straight past me when I am standing at the bus stop?

The regulations say that no bus may carry more than 40 seated passengers and 20 standing passengers. Yesterday I was the first to get off the bus when it reached the airport. I counted the other passengers as they got off. There were 129 of them.

It is clear that our bus companies break the regulations and think little of their passengers. Can nothing be done to make your service better?

Yours,

Tired passenger

1.The writer has to take Bus No. 49 because ______.

A.it is not always full B.it arrives on time

C.it travels faster D.it has fewer seats on it

C.129 D.60

3.What kind of letter is this passage?

A.It’s a letter of thanks B.It’s a letter of apology

C.It’s a letter of introduction D.It’s a letter of complaint

Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, we do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them. Our purpose is to fit them for life.

In some modern countries it has for some time been fashionable to think that by free education for all whether rich or poor, clever or stupid, one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough: we find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degrees; they refuse to do what they think “low” work; and in fact, work with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor; we can live without education, but we die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we would get terrible diseases in our towns.

In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we are educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability, and secondly, that we realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that it is very bad to be ashamed of one’s work. Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society.

1.The writer of this passage thinks that________.

A.free education can solve all of the world’s problems

B.free education for all probably leads to a perfect world

C.free education won’t help to solve social problems

D.all the social problems can’t be solved by free education

2.According to the passage, ________.

A.work with hands is dirty and shameful

B.work with hands is low work

C.work with hands is the most important

D.we can’t regard work with hands as low work

3.The purpose of education is _________.

A.to choose a system of education

B.to let everyone receive education

C.to prepare children for their future life

D.to prepare children for well-paid jobs

Earthquake can strike without warning. But many injuries and deaths from this kind of natural disaster can be prevented if people follow these safety tips.

If you’re inside a building, stay there! One of the most dangerous things to do in an earthquake is to try to leave a building. But do remember: do it carefully. 1. So do it as follows: Drop to the ground. Get under an object (物体) that is not easily damaged. Hold on to it until the shaking stops. You can also get to a corner formed by two walls with your arms over your hand. If you’re in bed when the quake hits, stay there and protect your head with a pillow.

2. You can go to the park, playground or fields near your house. Don’t take shelter under a tree, streetlights, electric poles or tall buildings. If you are driving, stop as quickly as possible and stay away from overpasses, buildings, bridges or anything else that might fall or collapse beneath you 3.

If you are trapped in ruins, cover your mouth with a handkerchief or a piece of clothing. Use your cell phone to call for help if possible. Don’t shout. 4. Tap () on a pipe or the wall so rescuers can find you.

Be prepared for aftershocks. 5. However, sometimes they even happen months later. Therefore, if you are not in a safe position (位置) after the first shock, you should move quickly but carefully to a safer place.

A. Don’t park your car under a tree or any tall object.

B. Don’t move about or kick up dust.

C. They can happen in the first hours after the earthquake.

D. If you’re outside, go to an open space.

E. Take a good hold of your cell phone in the building.

F. Most injuries happen when people inside buildings try to go out.

G. Shouting can cause you to breathe in dust.

Do you like shopping? Or does the thought of wandering round the shops fill you with terror? For some of us, shopping is an enjoyable way of spending our spare time and money. For me, it’s something I would rather avoid. Thanks to the Internet, we can buy goods and services cheaper online. But sometimes the problem is knowing what to buy. This has led to a type of shopping called “showrooming”.

Showrooming is something I’ve done. I will go to a shop to see, touch and try out products but then go home and buy them online at a knock-down price. I’m not alone in doing this. Research by a company called Foolproof, found 24% of people showroomed while Christmas shopping in 2013.

Amy Cashman, head of Technology at TNS UK, says the reasons for this new shopping habit are that “people are lacking time, lacking money and they want security about the products they are buying.”

But does this mean technology will kill shops? Certainly shops will change. They will have to offer more competitive prices or encourage people to buy more by giving in-store discounts (折扣) or free gifts.

We mustn’t forget that buying in a shop means you can get expert advice from the sales assistant and you can get good aftercare. It’s good to speak to a real human rather than look at a faceless computer screen but at least by showrooming, you get the best of both worlds!

1.The two questions in Paragraph 1 are raised to __________.

A.give two examples B.introduce the topic

C.compare different opinions D.get answers from readers

2.What does showrooming mean in the text?

A.Buying something in a store B.Showing products in a room.

C.Trying in shops and buying online. D.Shopping on the Internet.

3.According to Amy Cashman, which is not the reason for showrooming?

A.The lack of time. B.The security of the product.

C.The shortness of money. D.The comfort of the sofa.

4.What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?

A.Shops need necessary changes. B.Free gifts will surely promote sales.

C.Online shops will disappear. D.Shops will be replaced by online shops

My name is Amber and I want to share my story with you because what you’ve shared about life and positive energy has changed my life.

This past year has been one of the hardest for me. I felt I was stuck in a position that had nothing to do with what I wanted to do with my life. In January, after two years of being together, my boyfriend left me.

I read your blog every morning as I drink my coffee at work, but it wasn’t until this March that I told myself “no more negativity (消极性)” as you taught readers in your blog.

Since then I’ve got into new habits at work to keep my energy positive. When people walk in the front door, I’m the first face they see, so I smile big when I say “good morning” to them, especially on Monday. Instead of waiting for someone to ask me for help, I offer it with an open mind. The CEO noticed my change and offered me the executive (行政的) assistant position that I wanted.

One of the biggest things I’ve taken to heart from your blog is changing my opinions on my job. Yes, it was not an important position, but when I was passionate (热情的) about it, I could make my life fulfilling.

All in all, I have to thank you somehow for having the passion to help others because it truly is inspiring to me. So thank you so much, John. My life has changed because your words pointed me in the right direction, Take care!

Sincerely,

Amber
