If you see a problem, you should find a solution. That is what Alex Knoll, a 13-year-old boy from Post Falls, Idaho, believes. When he noticed a man struggling to open a heavy door from his wheelchair, Alex started thinking. "I wondered if there was a resource available to him to show which business had automatic doors, so he could actually access them, "Alex told Time for Kids."I couldn't find anything, so I created it."

That was four years ago. The idea is Ability App. Alex's website says the app will help people with disabilities and their caregivers find the exact position of public spaces and find safe, reliable services and employment opportunities. Talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres liked Alex's idea so much that she had him on her show and surprised him with a $25,000 check. "I think it's really going to help me get going, " Alex says.

Worldwide, there are more than a billion people with some kind of disability, according to The World Health Organization. A disability can make it hard to do everyday activities and find a Job. Tara Miller is a friend of Alex's family. She uses a wheelchair. She helps Alex with his app by sharing her experience of what it is like to live with a disability. "We all want to be able to be in the same establishments(机构) as any able-bodied person, " Miller says. "It' s about little things like low tables in restaurants and automatic doors, which can make a huge difference, she says. Alex has yet to set a launch (发布) date for Ability App. But he is determined to meet his goal. "I'm going to work as hard as I can and as fast as I can, "he says.

High School Course Requirements for College Admissions

While admissions standards vary greatly from one school to another, nearly all colleges and universities will be looking to see that applicants have completed a standard core (核心) curriculum. As you choose classes in high school, these core courses should always be the most important. Students without these classes may be automatically disqualified for admission. In general, a typical high school core curriculum looks something like this.

English: 4 years

Foreign Language: 2 to 3 years

Math: 3 years

Science: 2 to 3 years including lab science

Social Studies and History: 2 to 3 years

Art: 1 year

Keep in mind that the required courses for admission differ from the recommended courses. At selective colleges and universities, additional years of math, science and language will be necessary for you to be a competitive applicant.

When colleges calculate your Grade Point Average (GPA) for admissions purposes, they will often ignore the GPA on your transcript (成绩单) and focus only on your grades in these core subject areas. Grades for physical education, music performance and other non-core courses are not as useful for predicting your level of college readiness as these core courses. This doesn't mean that electives aren't important. Colleges do want to see that you have a large variety of interests and experiences, but they simply don't provide a good window into an applicant's  ability to handle strict college courses.

Core course requirements vary from state to state, and many of the more selective colleges will want to see a strong high school academic record that goes well beyond the core. Advanced Placement, IB and Honors courses are a must to be competitive at the most selective colleges. In most cases, the strongest applicants to highly selective colleges will have four years of math (including calculus), four years of science and four years of a foreign language.

1.How many courses are included in a typical high school core curriculum?

A.Three. B.Six. C.Eight. D.Ten.

2.What does your non-core courses mean when you apply to college?

A.Your intelligence level. B.Your academic standard.

C.Your talents and creativity. D.Your interests and experiences.

3.Who will most probably be interested in the text?

A.High school students B.High school teachers

C.College students D.College teachers

My class participated in the sports meeting on Nov. 7. It impressed me most was our team spirit. In the race, a boy student suddenly fall. Very quick, two students helped her up and ran together to the finish line. It was encouragement of the classmates that helped the boy stick to the end.

In my opinion, the event helps us understand the important of friendship. I can still remember four month ago, when we stepped into this school, we didn't knew each other. But now we are a bigger family. Even though we will face more challenges than before, but I believe we can overcome any difficulty as long as we are united.

WHAT are scientists? They are often described as gray-haired white-coated dull scholars.

But the world has changed. Young scientists are making their voices heard and releasing their powers on the world stage.

This is also true in China. Rising stars include new materials expert Gong Yongji, university professor Liu Mingzhen, and biologist Wang Ruixue. At the age of 28 in 2018, Wan Ruixue received the 2018 Science & SciLifeLab Prize for Young Scientists. This is a global prize to reward outstanding scientists at an early stage of their careers.

She focuses mainly on biomedicine(生物医学)and artificial intelligence(人工智能). "Both are cutting-edge(前沿)technologies at an early stage of development," she said.

"So, I think they have great potential to be developed. I think in the study of cutting-edge technologies, China and other leading countries in the world are standing on the same starting line. And in the study of structural biology, China is likely to become the leader."

She felt it was her fate to become a biologist. "I grew interested in the natural world, when I was very young," she said. In 2009, she entered Sun Yat-sen University.

In her third year at the university, she realized that she wanted to do something related to biomedicine. So she emailed China's top biologist Shi Yigong, hoping to join his lab at Tsinghua University.

Shi recognized her talent and welcomed her. Years of efforts at the lab have paid off. Her research on the high-definition 3D structure of spliceosome led to a scientific breakthrough.

Unlike-many of other young scientists who choose to pursue further study abroad, Wan currently has no plan to go overseas.

"The whole ecosystem for scientific research is continually improving in China," she said, adding the country has great science facilities.

I love winter birds and I love photographing them in snow. That being said, I admit that I'm a fair-weather birder(猎鸟者).Worse, I'm a lazy, fair-weather birder. I don't like weather extremes, so when it's very hot or really cold, it is hard to get me to leave the comfort of home. In summer, I only photograph hummingbirds(蜂鸟)in my yard, and in winter, I try to only go out on relatively mild days. Most of my bird photography is done within an hour's drive of my hometown of Elmira, Ont. So it's all about finding a balance that works.

The winter of 2014 was a great year for snowy owls(雪枭)here in Woolwich Township. One day in early March, I was on my way home from work when I noticed a beautiful snowy owl sitting in a tree right at the crossing. I pulled over to admire him, and then kept heading home unwillingly.

Two hundred meters or so down the road, there were two more snowy owls in a field by a fence, and in the next field over, another on top of a fence post. I couldn't find words to express my feeling at that moment. Thus I rushed home, grabbed my camera and went right back out to get some pictures. It was one of the most magical local birding moments I've ever experienced.

When I'm looking for excellent opportunities to photograph snowy owls and other birds without spending dozens of hours searching for them-and if I'm lucky, finding one that's semi-cooperative-I head to the Canadian Raptor Conservancy (CRC) or the Mountsberg Raptor Centre. I've attended so many photo sessions at each of these fantastic facilities that I've lost count.

1.What factor has the most effect on whether the author goes out to photograph birds or not?

A.Road conditions. B.Personal emotion.

C.Weather conditions. D.Time arrangement.

2.How did the author feel when he saw the snowy owls on the way home?

A.Sad. B.Excited.

C.Untouched. D.Proud.

3.What does the underlined word "them" in Paragraph 4 refer to?

A.Opportunities. B.Moments.

C.Pictures. D.Birds.

4.What can we infer about the author?

A.The author only photographs snowy owls.

B.The author can take excellent photos easily.

C.The author makes a living by photographing birds.

D.The author values each chance to photograph birds.

It can be really hard to learn a new language. I had always enjoyed learning languages in school, but only recently did I start learning German. I found that I could understand and learn individual words easily, but when it came to literature, I really struggled. That was when my tutor at university suggested reading some children's books printed in the target language.

At first, I felt a bit silly going on a hunt for a book designed for someone half my age, but then I realised that everyone has to start somewhere. As children, we are given these basic texts to familiarise our brains with certain vocabulary and writing structures, and from there, we can learn and develop. I started with books which are taught to us as children in the UK. I managed to find Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl.

The beauty of reading books that were introduced to you as a child is that you are already familiar with the plot. Therefore you can work out some words with your knowledge of the story. At first, I used to read with the book in one hand and a dictionary in the other, but this did not work well. The method I would recommend is to read a chapter first and at the end of that chapter, highlight the new words and then look up the definitions. If you can wait a bit before using a dictionary, you may be surprised what you can understand merely from the context. Additionally, a lot of children's books have pictures which may give you a clue as to what or to whom the passage is referring.

If you can find a translation of the books you have read as a child, I would strongly advise reading those if you are a complete beginner. However, if you feel a bit more confident reading in English, I would personally recommend the series of ‘Harry Potter’ books by J. K. Rowling or any of the Roald Dahl children's books.

1.What makes it hard for the author to learn German?

A.The author had a poor memory. B.The author had no interest in it.

C.The author had no one to ask for help. D.The author couldn't read books fluently.

2.What did the author think of reading children's books in the target language at first?

A.Interesting. B.Stupid.

C.Helpful. D.Boring.

3.What does the author try to express mainly in Paragraph 3?

A.How to deal with new words while reading.

B.Why it is helpful to read children's book at first.

C.How to choose a proper book to match your level.

D.How to form the habit of reading in the target language.

4.Why does the author write this text?

A.To give tips on how to learn a new language.

B.To persuade the readers to learn a new language.

C.To stress the importance of reading in language learning.

D.To share the author's stories of learning a new language.

You probably hear the word “love” many times each week. You may hear it from a parent, a friend, in your place of worship, on tv or in a book.

1. You may use the word love about a song, a food or your family pet. You may tell family members you love them. As you can see, there are many kinds of love!  But not all kinds of love are created equal.

So what does love mean to you?2. Love gives life meaning and purpose.  As Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Where there is love there is life.”  In the dictionary, love is defined as a strong, positive feeling you have for someone or something. 3.People show their love not just with what they say or feel, but by what they do.

At it’s core, love is about being kind and doing good things for others. A famous verse from the bible describes how love is more than just a feeling, but the way you act and treat others.  “4.It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

5.This allows us to love others no matter what. Showing love allows us to put the needs of others before our own.

So what are some ways that you could show love? It could be as simple as volunteering at a local soup kitchen. Maybe telling those we love how important they are! Consistently showing love will build a habit and fulfill you as well.

A.Love is patient, love is kind.

B.But it is also a lot more than that.

C.And what kind of love is most important?

D.You may even say the word love a lot yourself!

E.So what are some ways that you could show love?

F.Before we can show love though, we must first love ourselves.

G.Consistently showing love will build a habit and fulfill you as well.

Electric vehicle sales will likely jump over the next two to three years as prices fall and more choices are made available, according to BlackRock’s global head of department investing.

Customers will have more opportunities to move away from traditional combustion engines(内燃机) to electric vehicles and their choices will not be restricted to only certain auto suppliers, Evy Hambro told CNBC’s “Squawk Box ” on Thursday.

“I think we’re at this tipping point of change,” Hambro said. “Over the next two years, we’re going to see price point of entry(入口) drop . We’re expecting to see a big lift in electric vehicle sales over the next two to three years.”

Different countries are at various stages of adopting electric vehicles, depending on regulatory environments and consumer preferences, according to Hambro. For its part, China is leading the way in many new business models around automation and electric vehicles, including in battery technology, he said.

In a bid to curb(遏制) air pollution, Beijing has aggressively pushed for new energy vehicles — that run partially or fully on electricity — through preferential policies, providing subsidies and by exercising its manufacturing(制造) power. It is also exploring autonomous driving technology.

On Wednesday, American chipmaker Nvidia signed separate deals with Chinese electric vehicle start-ups XPeng Motors, Singulato Motors and SF Motors to develop the self-driving technology, despite the ongoing trade tensions between the U.S. and China.

“We’re seeing China increasingly open up to international business,” Hambro said. “We’re now seeing high levels of ownership, majority ownership in some industries. We’re seeing licenses being given out to specific groups ... I think really we’re seeing some change there, maybe some of these trade tensions are starting to soften.” BMW also said Wednesday that it has obtained a license to provide ride-hailing services in the Chinese city of Chengdu, making the German automaker the first foreign company to do so in China. It will face heavy competition from local players including Didi Chuxing and Meituan Dache.

1.How will electric vehicle develop in the next two or three years?

A.Decline in sales. B.Price fall.

C.Decline in ownership. D.Reduction in suppliers.

2.Why does Beijing actively promote the use of new energy vehicles?

About 50 volunteers worked together to build the new playground Sunday, Aug. 19. The "community build" was the culmination of nearly a year of fundraising, said Sarah Baird, a parent and chairwoman of the playground committee.

In the end, with the support of the community, Hemlock Semiconductor, Saginaw Community Foundation, Morley Family Foundation, Dow Corning Foundation and other donors, the group raised $70,000.

There has been a lot of publicity recently surrounding 5G, the next generation of wireless technology for the world. But what is this technology and how might it change our lives?

5G stands for fifth generation, meaning the next step in the progression of technology to replace the current 4G system. 4G was the replacement for 3G, which came after 2G, and so on. Earlier "G" systems were designed to improve mobile communication operations. Each new technology brought major improvements in speed and greatly increased network capacity(容量). The new 5G system promises more of the same. However, technology experts say there is a major way that 5G is different than the earlier systems. It will move well beyond mobile network technology to affect many more devices and industries than other "G" versions.

Wireless industry groups say 5G will help fuel future "smart cities" by connecting sensor(传感器) networks. 5G is also expected to connect self-driving cars and support new technologies involving virtual reality. Higher 5G speeds could also permit doctors to commonly perform remote medical operations. Factories and businesses could use 5G technology to increase automation and improve the collection of information.

Every coin has two sides.  Much of the data could contain private details about individuals, businesses or government organizations. The increased data flow would give internet attackers a lot more possibilities to steal and misuse data. In addition, the wider use of a 5G wireless network means any breakdown of the system would have more widespread and severe results. Such difficulties could affect public safety as well as world economic activity.

1.What is the significant difference between 5G and the early “G” systems?

A.It will affect more devices and industries.

B.It will change the way people communicate.

C.It will reform the pattern of information system.

D.It will improve internet speed and network capacity.

2.What can we learn about "smart cities" from the passage?

A.Smart city is a city full of intelligent people.

B.Now many smart cities have been built all over the world.

C.As long as there is a wireless network, you can build a smart city.

D.The development of 5G accelerates the construction of smart cities.

3.Why can 5G allow doctors to perform long-range medical operations?

A.Because of the low cost of 5G.

B.Because of the wide range of 5G.

C.Because of the high speed of 5G.

D.Because of the ability of 5G to collect information.

4.What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A.Possible risks of 5G technology.

B.The advantages of 5G technology.

C.The influence of 5G technology on the world.

D.The importance of information security in the 5G era.

Don't drive your kids to school. Let them ride a bike to school.

In England 8.3 million children travel to school every day. It is reported that only a small number of pupils cycle to school (under 2%), although one in three children would actually like to.

Experts say that to stay healthy, children need at least one hour of moderate (适度的) exercise every day. But only six out of ten boys and four out of ten girls get that. One of the reasons is that parents have developed a habit of driving their children to school when they could just walk or ride a bike to school.

Teachers often say that children who walk or ride a bike to school are more ready to listen to their classes, ask and answer questions in class than those driven by car, and the school journey is a good chance for children to learn about road safety and other life skills. Also, for many children, riding a bike is more fun than going to school by car.

Most parents know the benefits. Then what's stopping them from letting their kids ride a bike? Safety is the number one worry for them. But actually riding a bike is not as dangerous as parents think it is.

When you decide to buy a bike, you should be aware (意识到) that a bike that is too big or too small is dangerous. Don't try to get a bike that your child will “grow into”. Get the right size in good working order. Generally, 20 inch wheels are on bikes for 5-8 year old; 24 inch wheels are for 9-11 year old; 26 inch wheels are suitable for those over 11, and some older children should even take bikes with 28 inch wheels, but the main thing is that the bike fits your child.
