Several years ago, Waze Mobile co-founder Ehud Shabtai received a special gift from his girlfriend: a GPS device. The expensive gift was supposed to be helpful. But straight out of the box, it was already out of date.

Shabtai, a coding enthusiast, had an immediate action to reinvent it. Shabtai’s idea is to build an app. With monthly 80 million active users globally and nearly 400,000 superusers who function much like Wikipedia volunteer editors (editing maps rather than words), Waze Mobile caught people’s eyes as a revolutionary approach to navigation (导航). Waze’s value mainly lies in its high rate of user involvement. Unlike traditional navigation apps that simply show directions, Waze asks its users to report accidents and other road conditions in real time, so other users can avoid the traffic by using another route.

The goal behind Waze’s approach is a great one: not just avoid the traffic jam, but end it altogether. Waze is finding new ways to put its loyal and active user base to use to make that dream a reality, including a plan to make carpooling (拼车) cool.

To be sure, traffic jams are troubling people all over the world. Waze has been quietly ahead of the game for some time. In 2013, when Waze was just a small digital-mapping business with limited resources, it had something other competitors didn’t: richer GPS guidance thanks to its stream of live traffic reports from users. These users were the basis of Shabtai’s plan to improve his GPS device constantly: the app could be perpetually updated by users, anywhere and anytime.

Waze Carpool is going straight to the heart of traffic jams, trying to get more drivers off the road and into carpooling. The app has already connected tens of thousands of drivers willing to share information, and that trend could be the answer to a traffic-free future.

When I was 17, I read a magazine article about a museum called the McNay, once the home of a watercolorist named Marian McNay. She had requested the community to tum it into a museum upon her death. On a sunny Saturday, Sally and I drove over to the museum. She asked, "Do you have the address? ""No, but I'll recognize it, there was a picture in the magazine. "

"Oh, stop. There it is!"

The museum was free. We entered, excited. A group of people sitting in the hall stopped talking and stared at us.

"May I help you?" a man asked. "No," I said. "We're fine." Tour guides got on my nerves. What if they talked a long time about a painting you weren't that interested in? Sally had gone upstairs. The people in the hall seemed very nosy(爱窥探的), keeping their eyes on me with curiosity. What was their problem? I saw some nice sculptures in one room. Suddenly I sensed a man standing behind me. "Where do you think you are?" he asked. I turned sharply. "The McNay Art Museum!" He smiled, shaking his head. "Sorry, the McNay is on New Braunfels Street." "What's this place?" I asked, still confused. "Well, it's our home." My heart jolted(震颤). I raced to the staircase and called out, "Sally! Come down immediately! "

"There's some really good stuff( 艺术作品)up there." She stepped down, looking confused. I pushed her toward the front door, waving at the family, saying, "Sorry, please forgive us, you have a really nice place." Outside, when I told Sally what happened, she covered her mouth, laughing. She couldn't believe how long they let us look around without saying anything.

The real McNay was splendid, but we felt nervous the whole time we were there. Van Gogh, Picasso. This time, we stayed together, in case anything else unusual happened.

Thirty years later, a woman approached me in a public place. "Excuse me, did you ever enter a residence, long ago, thinking it was the McNay Museum?"

"Yes. But how do you know? We never told anyone. "

"That was my home. I was a teenager sitting in the hall. Before you came over, I never realized what a beautiful place I lived in. I never felt lucky before. You thought it was a museum. My feelings about my home changed after that. I've always wanted to thank you."

1.What do we know about Marian McNay?

A.She was a journalist. B.She was a painter.

C.She was a museum director. D.She was a community leader.

2.Why did the author refuse the help from the man in the house?

A.She disliked people who were nosy.

B.She felt nervous when talking to strangers.

C.She mistook him for a tour guide.

D.She knew more about art than the man.

3.How did the author feel about being stared at by the people in the hall?

A.Puzzled. B.Concerned.

C.Frightened. D.Delighted.

4.What could we learn from the last paragraph?

A.People should have good taste to enjoy life.

B.People should spend more time with their family.

C.People tend to be blind to the beauty around them.

D.People tend to educate teenagers at a museum.

The Miao Sisters Festival is held every year in Guizhou's Taijiang County, where 97 percent of the 168,000 people there are from the ethnic (民族)Miao group. It is an ancient tradition, which brings men and women together through food, gifts and music.

In the days before the festival, young women gather leaves and wild flowers, which they use to dye (给•••染色)sticky rice with bright colors. This brightly colored rice, known as Sister Rice, gives the festival its name. During the festival, the young women dress in beautiful traditional clothes with large amounts of silver jewelry (首饰).

The festival includes parades (游行),horse races and musical performances. But the real focus is the interaction (互动)between the young women and the young men who visit from surrounding villages and sing songs. In one traditional type of song, a man and woman take turns singing to each other, and the first one to make a mistake loses the game. The loser must give the winner a gift, but the winner is expected to give a gift in return too.

After meeting the men, the women send them home with a bamboo basket containing dyed rice and hidden objects with special meanings. For example, a pair of chopsticks means she wants to marry the man, while garlic shows that she is not interested.

One of several stories about the festival’s beginning of a girl and a boy who fell in love. The girl's parents wanted her to marry her uncle's son» as was traditional at the time. She refused, and the boy likewise refused to marry anyone else. For a time, they could only meet in a field and pass hidden messages to each other through rice in a bamboo basket.     ROME— four people, including the wife of the factory's owner, died on Wednesday after explosions (爆炸)at the Barcelona Pozzo di Gotto fireworks company, Italian media reported.

According to online reports by La Republic and TGCOM24, at least one other person is missing and three others are seriously injured, with two of them in dangerous condition. Among the dead was 71-year-old Venera Mazzeo, the wife of the factory owner Vito Costa. Mazzeo reportedly died on the scene. Antonio Costa, the owner's son, was seriously injured and was transported to a hospital in the regional capital of Palermo for treatment. Less seriously injured persons were moved to the nearby Milazzo Hospital to be treated for burns and other injuries. Many were transported by local people who reached the scene before ambulances could arrive, reports said.

The factory, located near the northeast of the southern Italian island of Sicily, near the city of Messina, has been in operation for more than ten years without any accident. Police reports showed that two separate explosions took place, with the first explosion likely causing the second one. Media reports said that police have guessed that sparks (火花)from a repairing project reached some of the explosive material stored in the factory and was likely the cause of the first explosion.

Reports also showed that firefighters were able to control the flame, which burnt buildings on the factory and threatened nearby structures.

When your alarm clock rings and you drag yourself out of bed, you probably wonder Why on earth does school have to start so early?

Fortunately, there is a new law to support—or better still, science.

A law in California, passed on Oct 13, requires that public middle schools begin classes no earlier than 800 am and that high schools start no earlier than 830 am. The law will go into effect by July 1, 2022.

Starting school at 800 or 830 in the morning may not sound like too big of a change, but it could mean one more hour of sleep for students who used to start school at 7:30 or even earlier.

"The effect of that one hour is something they will be feeling as 40-year-old adults," Sumit Bhargava, a sleep expert at Stanford University, told The New York Times. He said that not having enough sleep can affect students' mental health and increase the risk of being overweight and diabetes (糖尿病).

In the short run, students' school performances should improve almost immediately. Kyla Wahlstrom, a researcher at the University of Minnesota's College of Education, found that students who have enough sleep are alert in class and get much more satisfying grades.

Some might say that asking students to go to bed earlier could have been a much easier solution than changing the school timetable across an entire state. But according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, teenagers go through biological changes when they enter puberty (青春期),which makes it difficult for them to fall asleep before 1100 pm. So when school starts at 800 or earlier, they can hardly get the ideal 8.5-9.5 hours of sleep that experts suggest they need to do their best in the daytime.

This is why when the new law came out, its author, Anthony Portantino, said, "Generations of children will come to appreciate this historic day and our governor for taking action."

1.Which of the following is TRUE about the law?

A.The law has not been put into practice.

B.The law requires schools to start later than 830am.

C.The law will be passed by July 1, 2022.

D.The law is made by a university in California.

2.What does the underlined word alert in Paragraph 6 probably mean?

A.Friendly. B.Sharp.

C.Calm. D.Honest.

3.For a better academic performance in the daytime, how long do teenagers probably need to sleep?

A.About 8 hours. B.About 9 hours.

C.At least 10 hours. D.At most 8. 5 hours.

4.What's the main idea of the text?

A.Lack of sleep could lead to health problems.

B.The amount of sleep people need changes with age.

C.A new law lets students sleep longer.

D.Sleeping problems are leading problems for teenagers.

While on its surface, this essay appears to be only about writing, it is actually about wealth and class, freedom and imprisonment (囚禁),and the power struggle between sexes.

Go, commonly known in China as weiqi, is a board game for two players that needs logical (逻辑的) strategies. To win, the player must use black and white playing pieces to surround more field than the other player. The game was invented in China more than 2,500 years ago. It enjoys a wide fan base, mostly in East Asia—but it is becoming more popular in other areas of the world.

Schreiber, vice chair of Berlin Go Association, was introduced to the game 16 years ago, but thought the game rather boring at first. Similarly, Urban, chair of Berlin Go Association, accidentally discovered a book on Go on his mother’s bookshelf when he was 37 years old. “I tried to understand the rules because I love board games and I did not get it,” added Urban. But they both found the game more and more interesting after practice. “It’s like speaking to another but with your hands. You make a very direct message,” explained Schreiber.

Schreiber recommended children learn Go because he believed it could be beneficial for them. “They learn that there is always someone stronger and they learn that it’s okay to lose. They learn how to improve from their mistakes and say tomorrow will be better than today,” he explained.

To the experienced players, Go can be very addictive, as it carries meanings not just in leisure, but also in culture. Many are too quick to judge other people’s cultures. Confucius said, “Tell me, I’ll forget; Show me, I may remember; Involve me, and I will understand.” With Go, people only get stronger if they play against different players. With culture, one need ot go and talk to people, even better if in their language. If you can’t, maybe it’s enough to use the Go board as the language.

As cooperation between China and Germany deepens in many aspects of life, efforts have been made to further popularize Go in Europe. The European. Go Congress has been hosting annual competitions since 1983. Training courses are also offered, and professional players from China are invited to deliver lectures for game loves in Europe.

1.When was Go invented in China?

2.How did Schreiber and Urban feel about Go after practice?

3.Why did Schreiber recommend children learn Go?

4.What has happened as a cooperation between China and Germany deepens?

“You’ll get square eyes!” my mother used to say as I sat for hour after hour glued to the TV. I ignored her, of course. Past-forward a few decades and now I’m the parent. My 5-year-old lives in a world where screens aren’t fixed pieces of furniture. You can’t even avoid them by going outside. Screens are not only in our pockets; they’re everywhere.

The concerns have grown with the screens. In the past decade, we have heard that they will damage our mental health. Many of us feel more distracted by them, feeling guiltier and more tired as a result.

The apps and websites we can access on our phones have also sparked widespread concern. Big tech companies are also good at making use of our need for social recognition, hooking us on likes, retweets and follower counts. Social media has created a culture of mass narcissism (自恋), which has led many to worry about the emotional stresses on teenagers. A quick online search brings up dozens of papers linking screen use or social media with harmful effects on mental health, including depression and suicide.

Such statements are alarming. They are also widely believed, thanks to popular books like iGen by Jean Twenge, which claims that digital technology has ruined a generation. Yet, Amy Orben at the University of Oxford, who studies the impact of digital technology and social media in particular on mental health, holds different views. She claims that the underlying data can be used to tell different stories. She also spotted shortcomings in several large studies that claimed to show correlations (相关性) between the use of devices with screens and depression in users.

Twenge stands by her own finding, pointing in turn to what she considers flaws in Orben’s research methods. For David Max, at Royal College of Child Health in London, the effect of screen time and social media use on mental health remains speculative. “We cannot regard social media overall as good or bad,” says Davie. “We don’t know whether in individual cases social media is not responsible,” he says.

The explosion of mobile phone use has revolutionized our lives. I can download movies, write articles, communicate with my family and broadcast to the world all at the push of a button. Rather than impose constraints (限制), we should take a look at our use of screens and ask how they fit with the activities and lifestyle.

Every new technology with widespread impact has given rise to new fears. So the best bet may simply be to ask yourself what level of screen use makes you and those around you happy and try to stick to it. If you find yourself over addictive, don’t panic—and certainly don’t feel guilty. Nobody knows anything worth getting scared about.

1.According to the passage, people give likes, retweet or count followers to __________.

A.share one’s lifestyles B.show respect for others

C.seek social recognition D.relieve emotional stresses

2.The underlined word “speculative” probably means “__________”.

A.doubtful B.specific

C.important D.abstract

3.What can be learned from the passage?

A.Teenagers are more affected by screen use both physically and mentally.

B.Orben claims it is far too early to blame screen use for ruining a generation.

C.Big tech companies help to produce many research papers on mental health.

D.Twenge mainly introduces the overall benefits of digital technology in her books.

4.The passage is written to __________.

A.encourage readers to reduce the time of screen use

B.share different opinions on the effects of screen use

C.explain why screen use may have negative effects on people

D.relieve people’s concerns and worries about the use of screens

Georiga O’Keeffe always thought of herself as an artist. By 1928, the rest of the world did, too. At the age of 41 she was living in New York City and becoming a well-known painter. Still, O’Keeffe wasn’t happy. New York had been a good source of ideas for almost ten years. Now those ideas were drying up. O’Keeffe felt like she needed a change. She had visited New Mexico in 1917 with her sister. The wide open space had thrilled her. “Maybe I should go back,” she thought. In April of 1929, O’Keeffe packed her bags.

The wide open space of New Mexico drew O’Keeffe in. She spent hours just watching the sky change. Because the light was so clear, she felt like she could see for the first time. The beauty of the land renewed her. She couldn’t wait to start painting. Cow and horse skulls and desert flowers filled her canvases (画布). The colors of the desert inspired O’Keeffe. As a result, she made new choices in her artwork. “The color up there is different,” she explained. She loved the dusty blues and greens.

That August, O’Keeffe went home to New York. It was the start of a pattern. Each spring, she traveled to New Mexico to paint. These trips restored her spirit. Then, in the fall, she would return to New York. There, she showed her work. Each time O’Keeffe visited New Mexico, she explored a little more.

The bleached animal bones and skulls that O’Keeffe found excited her because she could see their special beauty. The bones didn’t mean death to O’Keeffe. To  her, they showed the lasting beauty of the desert. The landscapes, clear light, and bright colors also spoke to her. She often painted close-ups of the rocks and mountains. Later, she began to travel more in search of new ideas. However, she always came back to New Mexico.

As O’Keeffe grew older, her eyesight began to fail. Still, O’Keeffe wasn’t ready to give up. Her friend Juan Hamilton helped her work with watercolors. He also taught her to sculpt. As a result, she made art into her 90s. When she died at the age of 98, Hamilton sprinkled her ashes over the desert. Her body became part of the land that had touched her art and her life.

A vacation often means rest and relaxation, but more and more people are looking at traveling as an opportunity to help others and give back.

Don Germaise is a familiar face to many in Tampa Bay, but this former TV reporter’s life has changed a bit. “In the TV business you see the best and the worst the world has to offer, and at some point, it just occurred to me: I just need to do something to make the world a better place,” he explained.

He now travels the world, volunteering his time to help others. “Here’s the best part about a volunteer vacation. You’re not stuck at a hotel doing tours that everyone else does,” Germaise said. “You’re meeting regular people, living with regular people and helping regular people all over the world.”

Travel Writer Joe Miragliotta says that’s exactly why more people are spending time volunteering on vacation. “Travelers, especially millennials (千禧一代) like myself, are becoming more socially conscious when it comes to choosing where they go,” Miragliotta said. “They want to connect with the communities and causes they really care about.”

He recently took some time out of a trip to San Francisco to help out at a local farm. “Here, volunteers are growing healthy foods for the community, and they give it right back for free; and you know you can tend the vegetable gardens, help clean the orchard—lots of fun activities,” Miragliotta explained.

Volunteering doesn’t take up your entire vacation. You can do it for a few hours or even a few days. It’s all up to you. “With a kid...when you do something as simple as giving him or her a pencil when they never had a pencil for school, the look in their eyes is so unbelievable,” Germaise said. “It’s like they got an iPad for Christmas. It’s the greatest feeling in the world.”

1.What do vacations mean to Don Germaise?

A.Having a rest and relaxing. B.Getting an opportunity to travel.

2.According to Joe Miragliotta, young people __________.

A.are becoming more socially conscious B.find it fun to help in vegetable gardens

C.enjoy taking care of the children around D.are trying to learn more about other people

A.It only takes travelers a few hours to do volunteering.

B.Finding a way to help the people in need is not easy.

C.It is impossible for the kids to get an iPad for Christmas.

D.Making a small difference to people’s life is rewarding.

4.What’s the passage mainly about?

A.Millennials pay more attention to society.

B.Volunteer vacation is becoming a new trend.

C.Two travelers shared their experiences abroad.

D.Volunteers enjoy popularity among local people.

Table Talk

As we got out of the car, our son announced, “Phones stay in the car.”

“Why do you always have to tell us that?” complained our fifteen-year-old grandson.

Our son’s wife winked at us and then explained, “We have a family _________ that no one may bring anything electronic to the table.”

We _________ our phones in the car. Even though the restaurant was filled with families, there was little noise. All I heard were a few quiet conversations and the ding of forks on plates. The _________ unnerved me. I looked around. Everyone, even the young kids, was _________ at some kind of screen.

The silence was broken _________ the six of us sat down, and started talking. The waitress stood patiently and waited for our orders. When our food came, we continued to chat.

An elderly couple at the next table were finishing their dinners and conversing quietly. I noticed that they shot us a few glances, and _________ if our constant chatter was annoying them.

After the dessert, my son signaled the waitress for the check. She hesitated when she brought the black folder to our table. My son opened the black folder—it was _________. “You forgot the check,” he told her.

“There isn’t one. Someone else _________ your bill—and the tip too.” she said with a giggle (咯咯笑).

“Why?” asked our son, his wife and myself at once.

“They loved it that no one was connected,” she continued. “They loved watching you guys _________. The old lady went on and on about how nice it was to see a family eating and talking instead of looking at ‘electric games’.”

For a moment, everyone at our table was at a loss for __________. Then we all started talking at once. My son’s voice rose above the others. “Where are they? We want to thank them.”

“They left after you ordered dessert,” the waitress replied.

We spent the next fifteen minutes discussing this goodness and camp up with a __________. Next time we see a family eating at a restaurant __________ looking at anything electronic, we’ll pay it forward, just like what happened to us.

People have many different ways to relax during break time at work or school. Smartphones are probably the number one choice for a quick mental vacation. Although it might seem like a good time, looking at your cellphone may damage your mental power, according to a recent psychological study from Rutgers University in the United States.

For the study, more than 400 students were asked to finish a set of 20 word puzzles. Halfway through the task, the students were divided into three groups. One group was allowed to take a break and use cellphones to buy things online. The second group was asked to have a rest and buy things using a computer. The last group didn't take any break at all.

Interestingly, the group that used their cellphones during the break went back to work feeling the most tired and least motivated to continue. They also had the hardest time solving the remaining word puzzles. The cellphone group took 19 percent longer to finish the rest of the taskand solved 22 percent fewer problems than those in the other break conditions combined.

Terri Kurtzberg, co-author of the study, explained that they assumed looking at cellphones during a break would be no different from any other break---but instead, the phone may cause increasing levels of distraction(分心)that make it difficult to return focused attention to work tasks.

"Cellphones may have this effect because even just seeing your phone activates thoughts of checking messages, connecting with people, access to ever-refilling information and more, in ways that are different from how we use other screens like computers, and laptops," Kurtzberg told Science Daily.

So, during your next break, try putting your smartphone away. Go out for a walk, get to know your classmates or even take a nap(小憩).You may be surprised by the results!

1.What did the study find about using cellphones during breaks?

A.It could affect one's relationships with others.

B.It could reduce one's ability to solve problems.

C.It could make people more motivated at work.

D.It could be beneficial both physically and mentally.

2.What can we learn about cellphones from Kurtzberg's words?

A.They have become a necessary part of people's lives.

B.Their negative influence is almost impossible to avoid.

C.They may make it hard for people to concentrate on work.

D.They may influence people in the same way as computers do.

3.Why does looking at cellphones during a break cause increasing levels of distraction?

A.Because it makes people sleepy.

B.Because it does harm to people's brains.

C.Because it activates thoughts of using cellphones.

D.Because it reminds people of their unhappy experiences.

4.What does the author suggest people do during break time?

A.Turn off their cellphones. B.Keep their cellphones out of sight.

C.Keep their cellphones face down. D.Replace cellphones with laptops.

If you live in Shanghai, you might have to take a "lesson" in sorting garbage(垃圾分类), as the city recently introduced new garbage-sorting regulations(条例). It's now required that people should sort garbage into four categories, namely recyclable, harmful, dry and wet waste. However, if people fail to sort their garbage properly, they can be fined up to 200 yuan.

More cities are introducing similar regulations, following the practice in Shanghai. By the end of 2020, garbage-sorting systems will have been built in 46 major Chinese cities, including Beijing and Shenzhen, reported People's Daily.

According to a study by the Policy Research Center for Environment and Economy, under the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, over 90 percent of the public believe that garbage sorting is important for the protection of the environment. However, garbage sorting is still a big problem in China. Only 30 percent of participants said they think they are adequately(充分地)sorting their trash, the study noted.

According to Xinhua News Agency, it's partly because many people lack the willingness to sort their own waste. In the past, some previous garbage regulations didn't give clear fines for people who failed to sort garbage.

"It's a must to have a legal guarantee to promote garbage sorting." Liu Jianguo, a professor from Tsinghua University, told China Daily.

Liu Xinyu, a researcher of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, told China Daily that the importance of the new regulations in Shanghai is to change the past voluntary action into compulsory action for everyone.

Aside from China, many other foreign countries have also introduced garbage-sorting regulations. In Japan, waste sorting has become a basic survival skill. In Germany too, people are asked to sort waste into specific categories. For example, in Berlin, people have yellow bins(垃圾桶)for plastic and metals and blue bins for paper and cardboard.

1.What do we know about garbage sorting in Shanghai?

A.It sets an example for many other cities in China.

B.People should put their garbage into two categories.

C.People will be fined 200 yuan each time they break the regulations.

2.What is the current situation of garbage sorting in China?

A.Some people can properly sort their garbage.

B.Few people know the importance of garbage sorting.

C.People are not happy with the current garbage sorting regulations.

D.China's garbage-sorting problem is the most serious in the world.

3.Which of the following best explains "compulsory" underlined in paragraph 6?

A.Willing. B.Motivated.

C.Selected. D.Forced.

4.What is the main idea of the text?
