It’s known that the marmots(土拨鼠) are very shy around humans, beating their tails and making loud noise with their teeth to tell other members of their colony to run away.

But when these marmots see Matteo Walch, they run to his side and show him nothing but affection(喜爱).

The eight-year-old Matteo Walch built up a great relationship with the creatures since first being taken to see them by his nature-loving family four years ago.

The family return to visit these marmots in Groslocker in the Austrian Alps(阿尔卑斯山) for two weeks every year.

Matteo loves those animals and they are not at all afraid of Matteo because he has a feeling towards them and they understand that.

Marmots stand at around 18cm tall and can reach up to 50cm in length. Strangely, the animals are heavier in autumn, when they can weigh up to 8kg, but 3kg in the spring months.

Michael, a teacher from Innsbruck, Austria, has taken lots of photos of Matteo and his marmot friends during the past four years.

He said,I could spend several hours watching animals. It’s great that I have been able to document the marmot’s natural behavior around Matteo without making them afraid of me and my camera, I wanted to capture(用影片文字等记录的原样) the animals exactly the way I see them ---the way they behave among each other.

从照片上很清楚地看出,马蒂奥和土拨鼠彼此相处得很好。

My favourite great book is The adventure of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. Tom lives with his aunt Polly in a quiet street of St. Petersburg, Missouri. He’s a lively and clever young boy, and he finds himself in many exciting adventures(冒险). He runs away with his friends, Huck Finn and Joe, to an island in the middle of the Mississippi River for several days. With Huck he goes looking for treasure, with Becky he gets lost in a cave and finally they find a box of gold.

My favourite scene in the book is when everyone thinks Tom is dead. He decides to go to his town funeral. He hides and watches for a time and then suddenly he appears. Everyone is surprised to see him but they’re also pleased to see him alive.

Tom is the hero of the story, but there are another important characters. Huck is an outsider and everyone is afraid of him . Becky is pretty with fair hair, Joe is Tom’s best friend and Injun Joe is the bad man of the story.

The theme of the story is about children growing up. It describes how strangers are seen in small towns of America. Finally, it talks about freedom, social rules and how people are punished(惩罚)for bad behavior.

Why do I think The Adventure of Tom Sawyer is a great book? Mark Twain wrote the story in 1876, but it’s still read and loved by people all over the world today. And although it’s only a story. Twain wrote it in the everyday English of the southern states of America in the 19th century, so it sounds very real. Today it’s thought to be one of the greatest books in American literature. Go on--read it! I know you’ll enjoy it, too.

The first chocolate was eaten by people in South America hundreds years ago. In those days, the people didn’t really eat chocolate. They used the coca bean(可可豆) to make a chocolate drink and they enjoyed it very much. Many years later, the coca bean was brought to other countries and people came to love the taste of chocolate.

In 1824, John Cadbury opened a small shop in British. One of the things he sold was chocolate drink. In 1831, he opened a factory to make chocolate drink. A rabbit is running into its hole. You may ask, “What happened?”

Well, when a rabbit sees something dangerous, it runs away. Its tail moves up and down as it runs. When other rabbits see this tail moving up and down, they run too. They know that there is danger. The rabbit has told them something without making a sound. It has given them a signal(信号).

Many other animals use this kind of language. When a bee found some food, it goes back to his home. It can not tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little dance in the air. This tells the bees where the food is.

Some animals say things by making sounds. A dog barks, for example, when a stranger comes near. A cat purrs (发出呼噜呼噜的声音)when pleased. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own meaning.

But human beings have something that no animals have –-- a large number of words about things, actions, feelings or ideas. We are able to give each other information, to tell or inform other people what is in our mind or how we feel. By writing words down we can remind ourselves of the things what have happened, or send messages to people far away. No animals can do this. No animals has the wonderful power of language.

No one knows how man learned to make words. Somehow he learned to make them. As centuries went by, he made more and more new words. This is what we mean by language.

People living in different countries made different kinds of words. Today there are about fifteen hundred different languages in the world. A very large English dictionary, for example, contains four or five hundred thousand words. But we do not know all these. The words we know are called vocabulary. We should try to make our vocabulary larger. Read as many books as possible. When we meet a new word, look it up in the dictionary. A dictionary is the most useful book.

On a cold winter afternoon, Susan was walking home from a supermarket. She was feeling a little tired, as she was carrying her shopping bags. They were so heavy that she decided to have a rest in the park. She walked towards the gate of the park. She noticed a poor man walking out of a restaurant in front of her. The man was holding a paper bag. He walked to a rubbish bin and started looking through it.

Susan suddenly felt sad. She knew this man would take all that he could get, so she went up to him and gave him some fruit. The man looked up in surprise and took what she gave him. A big smile appeared on his face and she felt very happy. Then he said, “Wow! First someone gave me this sandwich, then the orange juice, and now some delicious fruit. This is my daughter’s lucky day. Thank you, girl.” Then he went away, singing a song.

Just then, Susan understood what the saying “Giving is getting” really meant. Everyone in the world needs help: everyone can offer help and everyone will be helped by showing kindness.
