Most of the time, we know what weather is heading our way---thanks to meteorologists (气象学家). Will it be sunny or rainy, hot or cold? Every day, people turn to the TV, computer, or radio to find out. And every day, meteorologists work hard to predict what the weather will be like.

For some, an interest in weather starts early. It did for Samantha Gibbons, a 10-year-old from the USA. She says she loves watching the weather. Every week, Samantha studies the science behind weather through the Internet. In January, she was the youngest kid to attend the 2015 American Meteorological Society (AMS) Annual Meeting. During the Q&A discussion at the event, she asked the experts how a halo ( a ring of light around a moon or sun ) appears. One expert answered her question. I was very excited to take part in the meeting ! It was like I was meant to be there,” said Samantha.

Not only does Samantha study the numbers behind weather, but she also practises speaking on air. As a member of her school’s broadcast (电视节目) club, she helps produce the school’s morning programmes. I love being on TV,” she said.

On September 3, 2014, Samantha made her first TV show on NBC Channel 12 in Phoenix, USA. Before her appearance, she woke up at 4 a.m. to arrive at the station by 5:30 a.m., a typical morning for many meteorologists. “To prepare, I practiced in front of the mirror,” said Samantha. “I learned I needed a lot of practice on camera!” Her future plans are simple: do well in school and practice broadcasting. What’s her advice for other kids interested in becoming meteorologists? “ Ask lots of questions,” said Samantha. “Always believe what you’re doing and keep pursuing (追求) your dream.”

In general, it’s hard to spend enough time in both concentrating on lessons and taking part in social activities. But I wanted to succeed in both. I knew this would be a challenge but I didn’t realize how difficult it was until my classes in the high school began.

I got on well with other girls. After school, I often had ice cream with them first instead of finishing my homework before it was time to hand it in. I always finished it the next day between classes. I knew it wasn’t very good and the grades that I get showed I was not hard-working enough. I realized that I needed to find some kind of balance.

So I created a timetable that would divide my time between studying and relaxing. It was a good idea but I was only able to follow it for a few days because it made me under too much pressure.

Later, I tried another plan. Each week I listed everything that I had to get done during the week and the time by which I had to get it done. Then under the things I had to do, I made another list of things that I could do if I had time.

It worked really well. Ever since I have never missed any important things. At the same time, I enjoyed my spare time a lot.

Planning my time has been challenging, but I continue to do it. I’m glad that I’ve learned to balance things and it has helped prepare for what is coming after graduation.

Nowadays, computer games are becoming more and more popular in many cities and towns. A lot of small shops along busy streets have been made into small game houses in order to get more money. These places are always crowded with people, especially young boys.

In the computer game houses, people spend lots of money competing(较量) with the machines. It’s hard for one to win the computer, but one can make progress after trying again and again. People have a gambling psychology(赌博心理) when they play computer games. The more they lose, the more they want to win. When class is over, the school boys run to the nearby computer game houses. If a snake bites you, take a photo with your mobile phone! It may save your life. This is the surprising advice of a British cook. One day Henry Jackson was working in a restaurant kitchen. He picked up a dish from a table, and suddenly a snake appeared and bit him on the hand. A few days earlier, the snake came to the restaurant from Asia in a box of bananas. It climbed out of the box and hid under the dish. “I tried to pick it up and it bit me. I threw it away, but it landed in the fridge. So I closed the door,” Jackson said. Anyway, Jackson was cool and he took a photo of the snake with his mobile phone. Soon his hand began to ache and he went to hospital. Then his chest began to hurt. Doctors couldn’t say what was wrong because they didn’t know what kind of snake it was.

Then Jackson remembered his mobile phone photo. The doctors sent it to London Zoo. When they knew the kind of snake, they could give Jackson the right medicine, and he left the hospital the next day. “So my advice is this: If a snake bites you, pick up your phone.
