Most of the survivors have to stay in the open area overnight after a 7.1-magnitude quake toppled (使倒塌)houses, cut off power and first-aid materials supply in northwest China’s Qinghai Province Wednesday while rescuers face difficulties in searching for the buried.

Rescuers have set up more than 40 tents for survivors in the Gyegu Town, near the epicenter (震中) in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu in southern Qinghai. But the effort seems far less than enough for the area inhabited by some 100,000 people.

Many people sought temporary shelters in buildings that remained unaffected by the tremor (轻微地震).

In the yard of Yushu’s Sports Committee, nearly 1,000 people were sitting or lying on the ground in sheer (完全的, 十足的) darkness. Some wrapped themselves up with quilts taken out from the debris (碎片, 残骸).

Some brought their own tents and others turned on the lights of motorcycles.

“I’m hungry and thirsty. We’ve been waiting for help since the morning,” said Zhaxi Toinzhub.

The woman said her three children were still buried in the rubble (碎石, 瓦砾).

The National Meteorological Station forecast Wednesday that temperatures may hit minus 3 degrees Celcius at night and 15 degrees Celcius in the daytime in the coming days.

The town would see strong winds and sunny weather in the coming days, providing favorable conditions for rescue operations.

The town is located in a remote area in Qinghai and the quake and ensuing (随后的) landslides have damaged roads, causing great difficulties for rescuers and, especially, machines from outside to enter the region.

“Rescuers had to dig with bare hands or iron sticks Wednesday, looking forward to the arrival of digging machines,” said a rescuer surnamed Wang, who was working at a collapsed hostel.

“The searching operation became even harder at night without lighting facilities,” he said.

In addition, rescuers may easily get exhausted working at a place with an altitude (海拔) of above 4,000 meters.

Thousands of rescuers and medical staff are rushing to Yushu from many regions of China, bringing machines, disaster-relief materials and medicines to the quake-hit town. Governments, organizations, enterprises and individuals are offering donations of money and materials to the region.

Of all the invention, I think the Internet is the most useful. First, the Internet makes it easier for us to keep touch with our friends. We can talk with them online or even can see them. Second, we can finish our work fast and better than before. It helps us save lots of the time. Third, we can get almost all kinds of information that we needed from the Internet. It's a good way to know about the outside world. Last, we can do the shopping online without leave home. We can save many time and money to buy things in this way. The Internet makes your life more colorful and interesting. It's really a useless invention.

With the Chinese language growing in popularity, the UK government plans to invest (投资)10 million pounds to help more kids learn Mandarin(普通话).Do you think it is necessary for the UK pupils to learn Mandarin? Some people share their opinions online.

Tsd(UK):The learning of any language can be valuable and rewarding, but it is not suitable for everyone. Chinese is a difficult language to learn and the UK has a poor reputation for teaching foreign languages. Why should they learn Chinese when most people in the world speak English?

Mark(US):I studied French for 2 years in high school and German for 4 years in college.I studied Mandarin informally for about 4 months before moving to China. Now I speak Mandarin every day as my wife doesn’t speak English. But it is far from being fluent.learning additional languages is a great thing, which offers a different perspective on the world around us. Nowadays,it’s almost necessary to be able to speak more than just your native tongue.

George(UK):No,unless they’re taught from a very early stage of childhood.Mandarin is so difficult. If China really is going to dominate the world, it’ll have to do so by speaking the world’s dominant language---English.

Sam(UK):I don’t think Chinese will become as widely spoken throughout the world as English. It is too difficult to learn as a second language,To learn Chinese you completely have to devote yourself to learning how to write and read it.If you have to learn it besides other subjects you can’t be good at it.But Chinese will become more popular, and that is a good thing.

1.What is probably Mark’s main motivation(动机)for learning Chinese?

A.Further education.

B.Effective communication.

C.His frequent travel.

D.The official policy.

Everybody hates rats (big mice). But in the earthquake capitals of the world — Japan, Los Angeles, Turkey — rats will soon be man’s best friends.

What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue dogs. Why? Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can’t get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat.

How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat’s brain gives a signal (信号).This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the rat’s brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has smelled that person.

Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Christian Linster at Cornell University, New York, says, “Robots’ noses don’t work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that.” Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don't need electricity!

The “rat project” is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Organization in Scotland says, “It would be wonderful. A rat could get into spaces we couldn’t get to, and a rat would get out if it wasn't safe.” Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake, of course).

1.Why will rats become man’s best friends in the world earthquake capitals?

A.Because they can take the place of man's rescue jobs.

B.Because they can find the position of people alive who are trapped in buildings.

C.Because they can serve as food for people alive who are trapped in buildings.

D.Because they can get into small spaces.

2.From the third paragraph we know the rescuers can judge a person who is alive by _____.

A.the noise made by the rat B.the rat’s unusual behavior

C.the signal sent by the radio on the rat's back D.the smell given off by the person

3.Which of these statements is NOT the advantage that rats have?

A.They are more lovely than other animals.

B.They are less expensive to train than dogs.

C.They don't need electricity.

D.They are small and can get into small places.

4.What can we infer from the passage?

A.At present rats have taken the place of dogs in searching for people.

B.The “rat project” has been completed.

C.People are now happy to see a rat in a building.

D.Now people still use dogs and robots in performing rescues.

读后续写

We have a pit bull (比特犬). We found him a few weeks ago, walking along the road in a rural area. He jumping on cars, we thought maybe his family was camping somewhere nearby, so we passed him by. A few hours later, on our return trip, he was still in the same place, again, trying to get folks to stop for him. When he saw us, he laid down in the middle of the road, so we were unable to get around him.

We stopped the car and looked around for a few minutes, trying to figure out if anyone was around from whom he was separated. It didn’t appear so. Then, we took a good look at the dog. He had no collar and he was really thin. We decided he was abandoned.

My husband said, “If he doesn’t bite me when I try to pick him up to put him in the car, then we have a new dog.” The dog happily joined us with no fight at all. The only thing we were in danger of was getting licked to death. He kept sticking his head between the two front seats and thanking us for picking him up.

The dog was clearly on the road for some time. He was extremely under weight. He was covered in scars and new wounds. We have guessed that some of the scars were from when he was on the road. We thought of possible fights with coyotes, but he also looked as though he was used to fighting other dogs. We figured his incredibly sweet personality was the reason he was abandoned. He can’t have been a good fighting dog.

Therefore, we fed him a lot over the course of the next two weeks and he gained over twenty pounds.

Most people have developed some hobbies at a point in their lives, such as doing sports, playing an instrument, painting, cooking and something else. There are many reasons and skills for taking up a hobby.

Realize you have more time than you think.

This is probably the first thing that keeps most people away from developing a hobby.1. But we waste so much time on social media and television commercials and then worry about the life in which we have no time to develop a hobby. Spare some time for a hobby in your day. Plan ahead and just do it.

Involve other people.

Why? Well, have you ever noticed that you stick to something longer when you feel that you cannot let another person down? Therefore, get someone jog with you, make music with you, or share recipes with you. Meanwhile, you will inspire them to stick to their hobby. 2.

Put your money where your mouth is.

3. So give out a bit of your budget to the hobby you choose so that you cannot blame a lack of “materials” for not doing anything.

4.

For me, this has been the most important step to stick to a hobby. If you jog, decide which race you want to enter this year. If you practice music, organize a concert.

Find the pleasure in what you do.

As with most things, the starting of only getting a few things ready can be difficult. But don’t give up. 5.

A. It is a total win-win situation.

B. Work towards something.

C. Think of a hobby that might interest you.

D. Others’ help will definitely do you good.

E. You don’t think that you have enough time to start it.

F. The fact is that people put money where their heart is.

G. Once you have started, you’ll find the beauty and relaxation.

Lucy whose skeleton(骨骼) was discovered in Ethiopia in 1974 died shortly after she fell out of a tree according to a new study published Monday in the British journal Nature

For their research Kappelman and Dr Richard Ketcham used a CT scanner to create more than 35000 "slices" of Lucy's skeleton Scientists named her Lucy from the Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" which was played at the camp the night of her discovery

The following analysis of the slices showed sharp clean breaks seen at the end of Lucy's right humerus (肱骨) are similar to bone breaks seen in victims of falls

The researchers concluded that these and other breaks in her skeleton show that Lucy who is believed to have stood about 3 feet 6 inches and weighed about 60 pounds fell feet first and used her arms to support herself but that the injury was too severe to have been survivable

The researchers estimate that Lucy was going about 35 miles an hour when she hit the ground after falling from a height of roughly 40 feet according to the statement

That sounds plausible But other scientists are doubtful "There are countless explanations for bone breaks" Dr Donald C Johanson director of the Institute of Human Origins and one of the scientists who discovered Lucy said "The suggestion that she fell out of a tree is largely a justso story and therefore unprovable " Johanson said it was more likely that Lucy's breaks occurred long after she died saying that "elephant bones appear to have the same kind of breaks It's unlikely they fell out of a tree

But the new research focused on "a small number of breaks" that are consistent with "highenergy bonetobone influences" and which differ from the sorts of breaks commonly seen in other collected bones Kappelman responded in an email "These appear to have occurred at or near the time of death "

Cameron is no ordinary dog, and not just because he was born on Valentine's Day. To Maggie, a first grader at Burgundy Farm Country Day School, the dog who spends most days on campus is more like a friend. When Cameron is near, Maggie feels "really, really, happy," she said, "I feel safe around him, she added.  "He '11 lie down and ask  me to scratch his tummy," she explained, because Cameron likes Maggie.

Cameron is one of a handful of dogs at Burgundy, a K-8 private day school in Alexandria, Virginia. After Luke died, Sindler adopted Cameron and brought him to campus, too, where the dog Maggie described as really cute" became a school favorite.

“They don’t care if you are good at basketball or a great reader, or popular," Sindler said. “They just want to be loved — equal opportunity," he added. "Cameron and the other dogs on campus—are always fastened with a rope and with their ownergo a long way toward improving students' social and emotional well-being," he said. They reduce tension and ease anxiety, and inspire happy feelings from students.

“They bring out some important emotions/' he said, “and are especially helpful to children and adults who struggle in social communication, Children often came from challenging backgrounds: many lived in poverty, or had to travel through dangerous neighborhoods to get to school, or shared a too-crowded home. When these emotionally needy children met the dogs, they relaxed and were more prepared to learn.

Perhaps there is no sport in the world more connected to sneakers than basketball. Many NBA players wear them to send important messages and showcase their personalities on court.

And now, thanks to a new policy, the NBA will strengthen its status as the most stylish sports league in the world. When the 2018-2019 NBA season kicked off in October, the NBA lifted its color restrictions on players’ sneakers. It is the first time in the league’s 72-year history that it has allowed shoes to be of any color a player likes, as long as no reflective (反光的) material is included.

In the past, the NBA required “uniformity (一致性) of uniform”, meaning each players’ shoes had to match those worn by the rest of the team. Their sneakers had to be at least 51 percent black or white, with an element of team color.

This landmark rule change is part of the NBA’s collective effort to support players “statements” on and off the court. “ More and more people realize that limitation of the color of players’ shoes actually constrains (限制) their personal expression and storytelling,” CNN News noted.

Sometimes a shoe was worn in a memorable game, or the design of a shoe has meaning for the player.

Before Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant, nicknamed “the Black Mamba”, retired, it was said that he wore a new pair of sneakers to each game and stored his used sneakers.

Bryant brought the low-top style of sneaker with a Mamba print to the forefront in 2008 to symbolize the spirit of perseverance and bravery. In 2013, Bryant added nine red stitches (缝针) to the back of his shoe to represent the nine stitches from his Achilles tendon surgery. “It has become an attitude. That is my Mamba personality,” Bryant told Sports Illustrated magazine.

Kyrie Irving of the Boston, Celtics wears probably the most famous signature sneakers. Inspired by his mother, who died when he was four, he has a rose on one side of his shoe to represent her. All of his sneakers are also inscribed () with the words, “JBY (Just Be You)”. “Just Be You is the motto I live by every single day, because I’m happy to be an individual. It’s a beautiful thing,” Irving told UK media site GiveMeSport.

There is no end to the stories about sneakers in basketball. It’s certain that they will remain a platform for players who want to use them to express their ideas and personalities.

1.According to the new policy, the NBA players ________.

A.may choose sneakers they like without restriction

B.should wear sneakers in their own team color

C.have to choose sneakers either in black or in white

D.have more freedom in choosing personal sneakers

2.What can we infer from Paragraph 4?

A.Uniformity guarantees better results.

B.The new rule leads to controversy.

C.The NBA cares little about players’ statements.

D.Players’ personal expression also counts.

3.Which of the following is used to express family value?

A.A rose. B.JBY.

C.A Mamba print. D.Nine red stitches.

4.What’s the best title of the passage?

A.The NBA lifts color restrictions.

B.Our shoes have stories.

C.Bryant has a unique dress style.

D.The NBA players are particular about the colors of their sneakers.

Places to avoid travelling

India

The main distinction in wealth and class may explain some of the risk of crimes in this country. But according to John Gobbels, vice president and chief operating officer for Medjet (an international emergency service), it’s medical safety that actually makes India so dangerous. He explains that the U. S. State Department gives the country Level 2 travel advisory status. (Level 1 means you should exercise normal precautions(预防措施);Level 4 is “ do not go ” .)

Hawaii

Considering this destination is a very hot spot for honeymooners, it might be surprising to see the Big Island of Hawaii as a dangerous place to visit. The eruption of a volcano has put Kilauea in a state of emergency, with poisonous gas, lava flows, and earthquakes all a risk. You’ll likely see special airline deals cancelled, so think twice before making this flight.

Acapulco

This beach resort town on Mexico’s Pacific coast isn’t exactly the white-sand party destination it once was. With a Level 4 travel advisory, Gobbels explains, it’s in the same category as places like Iran, Syria, and North Korea. It’s regarded as the murder capital of the country.

Cairo, Egypt

According to a recent report from the Thomson Reuters Foundation, Cairo is considered the most insecure city for women in the world. Even though the political tensions are easing in this area, according to Gobbels, sexual violence and cultural expectations make it extremely problematic, for both locals and visitors.

1.According to John Gobbels, what should visitors pay special attention to in India?

A.Personal belongings. B.Travel insurance.

C.Cultural difference. D.Medical safety.

2.Which place mentioned above is especially dangerous for a woman tourist?

A.India. B.Cairo.

C.Acapulco. D.Hawaii.

3.What can be inferred from the text?

A.Syria isn’t a risky destination where you’ll have a wonderful vacation.

B.The political unrest in Cairo is responsible for its insecurity at present.

C.A Level 3 travel advisory indicates you can go with normal precautions.

D.The flights to Hawaii may be changeable due to the eruption of the volcano.

I'd come to this remote beach on my sailboata place to escape. My wife and I had recently separatedour marriage in trouble. I worried about my two boysjust six and eight. It seemed like forever since I'd heard them laugh. But I didn't know what to do to make things better.

“HelpHelp”The girls shouted. I'd meant to tell them to stay away from the dangerous water. Now one of them was in the oceanbeyond the surf line. I could just hear her screams over the waves. Any second now she'd be swept away. I ran across the sand as fast as I could. The other girl was at the edge of the surf lineyelling.

“WaitStopDon't go any farther”I charged into the waves and was reaching for her when a wall of water dashed over us. For half a second I saw her disappear under another big wave. I'm a strong swimmer, but I could feel the wave pulling me hard. I swam to her and seized her, her little body shaking, trembling. But where is the other girl? I saw a waving arm. A head broke the surface, not far away. The arms of the girl I'd rescued were wrapped desperately around my neck. She was breathing with sobs. “Let go of my neck. I need you on my back. Hold my shoulders so I can swim to your friend. ”

She loosed her hands and I shifted her to my back. “She's my sister, Sarah, and I am Lillian,” she said. For a moment I thought of my boys. How much they loved each other. How much I loved them.

I looked across the water and saw a small head after a big wave. I quickened my swimmingfighting for each breath. Tiny arms pressed against my shoulder. I reached out and held the second little girl. She was in total tirednesstaking deep breathscrying quietly.

Most adults find it hard to recall events from their first few years of life and now scientists have found exactly when these childhood memories fade(消失).

A new study has found that most three-year-olds can recall a lot of what happened to them over a year earlier, and these memories persist while they are five and six, but by the time they are over seven, these memories decline(衰退) rapidly.

Most children by the age of eight or nine can only recall 35% of their experiences from under the age of three, according to the new findings.

The scientists behind the research say this is because at around this age the way we form memories begins to change. They say that before the age of seven children do not have a sense of time and place in their memories. In older children, however, the early events they can recall tend to be more adult-like in the way they are formed. Children also have a far faster rate of forgetting than adults. The findings also help to explain why children can often have clear memories of events but then forget them just a couple of years later.

The youngsters first visited the laboratory at the age of three and discussed six unique events from their past, such as family outings, trips to the zoo, and the first day of school. The children then returned for a second session between the ages of five and nine to discuss the same events. The researchers found that between the ages of five and seven, the amount of memories the children could recall remained between 63 -72 percent. However, the amount of information eight-to nine-year-old children could recall dropped to 35 and 36 percent.

1.What does the new study tell us?

A.Childhood memories decline with years.

B.Three-year-old kids are the cleverest.

C.Childhood memories can fade easily.

D.Some adults cannot recall past events.

2.What does the underlined word “persist” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A.Change. B.Remain.

C.Appear. D.Return.

3.What can we learn from Paragraph 4?

A.Adults cannot have clear memories of past events.

B.Children can think like adults when they get older.

C.Children under 7 years old have different ways of forming memories.

D.Children often forget things because they have no idea of time or place.

4.In the second session, nine-year-old children _________.

A.refused to discuss the same events

B.remembered all their family outings

C.could recall 72 percent of their past events

D.only remembered a small part of their past events
