Robots have always had certain advantages over humans. They’re typically made of more durable materials than the soft tissue covering human bodies and since they can be repaired in the event of damage, they can basically “live” forever. But robots are usually heavy and awkward, and humans have always had a huge advantage in terms of dexterity.

Thanks to the mad scientists at Boston Dynamics, that appears to be changing. The humanoid Atlas robot, which has already showed incredibly impressive human-like abilities, just keeps getting better and better, and a new video by the company shows that its fluidity(流畅) of movement has now easily surpassed your own (and mine).

Atlas has slowly but surely been learning a lot of new skills over the past few years. It’s graduated from holding boxes and awkwardly walking to sprinting(冲刺) over obstacles and navigating(导航) all manner of difficult terrain(地形).

This latest show is an evolution of those skills, with the robot showcasing its ability to fall down, spin in the air, and even do a respectable handstand. It’s essentially a full-fledged(经过充分训练的) gymnastics routine being performed by a robot. Whether that’s awesome or scary depends on your point of view.

We created the maneuvers(招式) using new techniques that streamline the development process. First, an optimization algorithm(优化算法) transforms high-level descriptions of each maneuver into dynamically-feasible(动态可行的) reference motions. Then Atlas tracks the motions using a model predictive controller that smoothly blends from one maneuver to the next. Using this approach, we developed the routine significantly faster than previous Atlas routines, with a performance success rate of about 80%.

Still, being able to pull this off four out of five times is nothing to laugh at, and if Atlas is indeed learning things faster than ever before, we’ll likely be seeing even more impressive routines in the near future.

1.The word “dexterity” in Paragraph 1 means to be _________.

A.violent B.flexible

C.light D.stupid

2.What’s the author’s attitude towards the robot’s new ability?

A.awesome B.scary

C.promising D.doubtful

3.What’s the author’s purpose in writing Paragraph 5?

A.To show how Atlas made full-fledged gymnastics routine.

B.To explain how Atlas got the new maneuvers.

C.To promote the development of robots

D.To introduce the theory of Atlas.

4.What does the text intend to tell us?

A.Robots have always had certain advantages over humans.

B.Robots likely have more development in the near future.

C.Atlas can do everything that we want him to do.

D.Atlas is a fully-trained gymnast with a lot of skills.

Children should do housework. That’s a controversial idea, though not everyone will admit it. A few parents will declare that their children are too busy for housework. Many more of us assign housework, or say we believe in them, but the housework just doesn’t get done.

That' s a problem. For starters, housework is good for kids. Being a part of the routine work of running a household helps children develop an awareness of the needs of others, while at the same time contributing to their emotional well-being.

One small study, done over a period of 25 years, found that the best predictor for young adults success in their mid-20s was whether they participated in household tasks at age 3 or 4. Those early shared responsibilities extended to a sense of responsibility in other areas of their lives.

But for all that their help matters, few kids are doing much around the house at all. In a survey of 1, 000 American adults, 75 percent said they believed regular housework made kids "more responsible”. Yet while 82 percent reported having had regular housework growing up, only 56 percent of those with children said they required them to do housework.

Sports and homework are not get-out-of-housework-free cards. The goal, after all, is to raise adults who can balance a caring role in their families and communities with whatever lifetime achievement goals they choose. Housework teaches that balance.

What should you do when getting children to do housework? Accept no excuses. Don’t worry if you must repeat yourself again and again. If you’re spending more time getting the child to do this job than it would take to do it yourself, then you’re doing it right. Can an allowance help? Maybe. But if you’re trying to teach kids to share the responsibility of a home, paying them for routine housework is not the right message.

1.What is most parents’ problem with children doing housework?

A.They are against the idea. B.They fail to put it into practice.

C.They doubt the possibility of it. D.They are finding excuses for their children.

2.Why does the author mention the small study?

A.To state the reasons for early success.

B.To give examples of some successful people.

C.To prove doing housework is beneficial.

D.To suggest kids take responsibility for their behavior.

3.According to the survey of American adults, how many of them used to do housework as children?

A.820 B.560.

C.750. D.440

4.Why does the author write the last paragraph?

A.To criticize some irresponsible parents.

B.To discuss the impact of a good family atmosphere.

C.To advise parents to spend more time with their kids.

D.To offer parents some advice on assigning children housework.

Like many little school girls, Savannah Hart was given the chance to take home her class “pet” — in this case, a sweetly tattered(破烂的) toy monkey named Harriet.

What happened next could be the subject of a children’s storybook: the 5-year-old from Australia took Harriet on a summer trip to Buckingham Palace when things went wrong.

While visiting Queen Elizabeth’s home, the little girl misplaced the toy, and her family assumed(假定) that Harriet would be forever stuck at the bottom of the palace’s lost property collection. But after a teacher at Savannah’s school, Woodside Preschool in Australia, wrote a letter to the Queen to see if the well-worn Harriet could be located, determined palace employees set to work to find it.

Helped by the letter and photos taken during the monkey’s tour around the U.K. with Savannah’s family, Harriet was found and returned to Savannah. But Harriet didn’t come back alone on the 9,000-mile journey from London to Australia — the monkey was also accompanied by Rex, a stuffed corgi dog sent from the palace.

Before leaving the U.K., Harriet even spent some time helping out with palace tours and was given the royal treatment.

“We aim to give every visitor to Buckingham Palace a memorable experience, and after we had found Harriet the monkey near the Family Pavilion(亭,阁), she spent some time helping out the Visitor Services team before heading home,” said a spokesperson for the Royal Collection, which runs the visitor experience at Buckingham Palace over the summer. “We hope Harriet enjoyed telling Rex the corgi dog about her adventures on the journey back to Australia.”

Scientists at the University of Hawaii at Manoa studied a huge area in the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean known as the ClarionClipperton Zoneor CCZ to find and study new sea species.

Diva Amona researcher at the University says usually deep sea biologists think there is not a lot living in the deep sea.

“But we found that actually there is quite a lot living thereand so that was really exciting. . . ” she says.

The group is studying the area because the CCZa huge and flat area of seabedis known to have valuable minerals. The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is allowing the company UK Seabed Resources Ltd. to explore the area on the Pacific Ocean floor for mining. Howeverthe ISA said the company must first complete a biological study of the area before it can begin mining for metals. Sothe company employed Amon and her group.

Amon says that more than half of the animals they collected were completely new to science. Her group discovered not only new speciesbut new genera (动植物的属) of animals.

Biological oceanographer Paul Snelgrove says that finding new species in the deep ocean is common. Buthe saidfinding a new genus “is really great”.

Amon warns that if mining happens across the whole areathe ecosystem would be largely destroyed. Butshe sayswe will find the least damaging way to make mining possible.

“There is a sort of scientific push to try and slow things down a bit so that the science can be done before. . . so it can be done with the least influence possible. . . ” she says.

“It’s likely we are going to develop at least some parts of these deep ocean environments and do it in a way that’s going to minimize (最小化) our influence”says Paul.

In recent years many flowers shops have been appeared in our small town. It is

Homework is a major part of going to school: It's your teachers' way of evaluating(评价) how much you understand of what's going on in class.1. Luckily, you can do a few things to make homework less work.

Be sure you understand the homework.

Write your homework down in your notebook or day planner if you need to.2.It's much easier to take a minute to ask the teacher during or after class than to struggle to remember later that night!

Use any extra time in school.

Many schools have study halls that are specifically designed to allow students to study. It's tempting(诱惑) to hang out with friends during study periods or unstructured(松散的) time.3.

Take a break.

4. So take some breaks while doing your homework. Sitting for too long without stretching or relaxing will make you less productive than if you stop every so often. Taking a 15 minute break every hour is a good idea for most people.

5.

If you don't finish your homework during school, think about how much you have left and what else is going on that day, and then budget your time. Most high school students have between 1 and 3 hours of homework a night. If it's a heavy homework day and you've got an assignment in every subject, you'll need to devote more time to homework. It's a good idea to come up with some kind of homework schedule, especially if you are involved in sports or activities or have an after school job.

A. Make a homework schedule.

B. Settle down to do homework.

C. And it helps digest important concepts.

D. Most people's attention spans (跨度) aren't very long.

E. Don't be afraid to ask questions about what's unknown.

F. Once your homework is done, you can check over it if you have extra time.

G. But the more work you can get done in school, the less you'll have to do that night.

Doctors in hospital emergency rooms often see accidental poisonings(意外中毒). A frightened parent arrives with a child who swallowed a cleaning liquid. Or perhaps the harmful substance is a medicine. Or it might be a chemical product meant to kill insects. These are common causes of accidental poisoning.

In cases like this, look for medical help as soon as possible. Save the container of whatever caused the poisoning. And look on the container for information about anything that stops the effects of the poison. Save anything expelled(被强迫排除) from the mouth of the victim. That way, doctors can examine it.

In the past, some people forced poisoning victims to empty the stomach. They used a liquid— syrup of ipecac(催呕剂)— to do this. But an organization of children’s doctors no longer advises parents to keep syrup of ipecac. The American Academy of Pediatrics says some poisons can cause additional damage when they come back up the throat.

Millions of people know a way to save a person who is chocking on something trapped in the throat. The method is commonly known as the Heimlich Maneuver or abdominal thrusts. The American Red Cross says a rescuer should first hit the person on the back five times between the shoulder bones. These back blows may ease the choking. If the airway(气管) is still blocked, the Red Cross suggests pushing hard five times along the victim’s abdomen. The abdomen is the area between the chest and the hipbones(髋骨).

1.Why is the container of the poison required to save?

A.To look for harmful information. B.To learn a lesson.

C.To use it to break the poison. D.To look for medical help.

2.Why are parents advised not to keep syrup of ipecac?

A.To keep the stomach empty. B.To avoid more damage.

This repeated several times and shortly after the people of the town were whispering about the man, who was ordering three beers at once.

A couple of weeks later, the bartender decided to clear this out and inquired: “ I do not want to pry, but could you explain why you order three beers all the time?” The man replied, “ It seems strange, doesn’t it?     1. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how:

Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First set your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. 2. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you realize what is happening to your time.

Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.

Make good use of your time in class. 3. Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss next day, read that material. 4. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you’ll remember it longer.

Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be over worried.

5.You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

A. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.

B. There are other methods that might help you with your studying.

C. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says.

D. No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.

E. This will help you understand the next class.

F. Make full use of class time to take notes of what the teacher says in class.

G. Maybe you are an average student.

If you move to a new school, you’ll have to worry whether or not you’ll make friends. Here are some simple suggestions which help you make new friends a lot easier.

Try speaking to the people next to you in class. As they’re close by, it makes sense to communicate with them first.

Have courage to speak to everyone in your class. You will probably stay with that class through your years at the new school, so it helps if you get on with them.

If you don’t have many friends in your class, try and make new friends in your subject lessons. You can also talk with them at lunchtime and after school.

Join a lunchtime or after-school club. You’ll get to meet kids of all years that way.

Ask your teacher to pair you with another pupil.

Use your celebrity status! Since you’re the new person, you’ll have gained celebrity status, which you can use for a couple of weeks. Talk to people, remember to smile and always be open and friendly. Listen carefully to what others have to say so as to make them feel important.

As you grow older, it’s natural to make new friends and sometimes that means you grow apart from your old friends. So try and make time for all your friends. Why not introduce your different sets of friends so you can all go to the cinema or bowling together?

But what if a friendship group is pushing you out? If this is happening to you, try and ask someone you’re friendly with what is happening. If the whole group is leaving you out, try to find new people to spend time with at lunchtime.

Sharon, Aged 22

The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself. Besides, I don’t know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care about things such as how much homework you already have in one night. It’s best to just learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need to.

Frank, Aged 21

I think almost every kid feels both nervous and excited before their first day. You will probably love it. I know I did. You should join some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!

Eddie, Aged 20

When I started high school I was really nervous too, especially since I had been homeschooled all through middle school and didn’t really know anyone. I suppose the best advice would be to just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier before you know it.

David, Aged 19

I’m not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening(令人恐惧的). But you’ll get used to it. Don’t be afraid of anyone; upperclassmen will pick on you more if you let them know you’re afraid. Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week it’s really not bad at all. Don’t worry.

1.What can we infer from Sharon about high school?

A.Teachers are quite strict

B.Students often stay up at night

C.Teachers provide little care for students

D.Students should make good use of their time

Nowadays, many middle school students are taking all kinds of after-school class. There are two opinions about it. Some think that students can get good exam results and go to better schools if they took these classes. They also believe that students can avoid to watching too much TV or playing computer games by taking more after-school classes. But other think students need more time to rest. If they take too much classes, they might feel stressed-out. Besides, putting too much pressure on them can have the opposite effect. As for me, I don’t think take extra classes is necessary. How we learn in class is enough. We can improve our efficient in class and learn to teach ourselves instead relying on extra lessons.

What does Wi-Fi stand for?

Long gone are the days of dial-up and waiting for your turn to use the computer. It’s easier than ever to connect to the Internet in the digital world today. 1.

Wi-Fi is a wireless network that uses radio frequency signals to connect to the Internet or send messages between devices without wires. Everything from your phone and laptop to tablets and printers can use Wi-Fi, thanks to these waves. 2. Two years later, a group of companies formed the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA, now the Wi-Fi Alliance), a global non-profit organization created to promote the new Wi-Fi standard.

None of that history explains what Wi-Fi stands for, because the phrase doesn’t stand for anything. Wi-Fi is a trademarked term describing the device or technology based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) wireless communication standard 802.11, according to the Wi-Fi Alliance.3. So the Wi-Fi Alliance hired the marketing company Interbrand to come up with a shorter name: Wi-Fi, according to one of the founding Alliance members.

4. The rumor that it stands for “Wireless Fidelity (无线保证)” is thanks to the Alliance. Some members didn’t understand the branding or marketing for Wi-Fi. They felt consumers would want an explanation for the name. So the Alliance agreed to include a tagline: The Standard for Wireless Fidelity. That’s why so many people assume Wi-Fi stands for wireless fidelity, but the tagline came after the name.5. Don’t add to the confusion and stop miss-associating these phrases by learning the real meaning behind these acronyms (缩略词).

A. That’s a mouthful.

B. This is mostly thanks to Wi-Fi.

C. The name caused a misconception about Wi-Fi.

D. There is some debate surrounding the question what Wi-Fi stands for.

E. In 1997, a committee of industry leaders approved a common Wi-Fi standard.

F. Several years ago, a common standard of Wi-Fi was set up by several companies.

G. Plus, the Alliance removed the tag, although the confusion it brought still lives on today.
