If there is one person who has left a deep impression on me, it’s my teacher Mrs. Pathak who was my class teacher for three years. In my childhood, how I wished I had a mother or a sister like her. One moment she could be tough (严厉的) and strict, another moment caring and compassionate (富有同情心的).

She always encouraged us to tell the truth. For instance, if one had not done the homework, he need not lie. She allowed us to make mistakes, saying we couldn’t be perfect all the time, but we should try.

Another thing she taught me early on was punctuality. She set a good example with her own behaviour. She was always on time, so we students tried our best to be on time.

She surprised us with her sense of humour. Her classroom teaching was always humorous. After class, she talked to us and told us jokes.

We really felt free to ask questions and Mrs. Pathak would give the answers. If she did not know — there had been some occasions (场合) — she would say so. We all then tried to find out the answers. Whoever came up with the answer was appreciated and given the due credit (应有的称赞). Now I sometimes wonder whether Mrs. Pathak was pretending just to encourage us to explore and find answers by ourselves.

1.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT suitable for describing Mrs. Pathak?

A. Tough. B. Humorous. C. Compassionate. D. Careful.

2.The underlined word “punctuality” in the third paragraph probably means _____.

A. being on time B. being honest C. being patient D. being clean

3.The underlined word “so” in the last paragraph means that _____.

A. the answers were not right B. she didn’t know the answers

C. the answers were correct D. she would give the answers

4.In the author’s opinion, why didn’t Mrs. Pathak give the answers to the questions sometimes?

A. Because she didn’t like answering the questions.

B. Because she didn’t know the answers to the questions.

C. Because she wanted the students to find them out by themselves.

D. Because she thought the students knew the answers already.

Elephants are able to know the difference between a man and a woman, and can tell an adult (成年人) from a child—all from the sound of a human voice. This is according to a study in which researchers played voice recordings to wild African elephants.

The animals showed more fear when they heard the voices of adult Masai men. Usually Masai people hunt elephants, and this suggests that animals have grown to listen for and avoid them.

Prof. Karen McComb and Dr Graeme Shannon from the University of Sussex led the study. They explained that in former research they had used similar experiments to show that elephants could tell—from the sound of a lion—whether the animal was a female (雌性) or a more dangerous male (雄性).

Prof. McComb wanted to find out if the animals used their very sharp sense of hearing to recognize danger from humans.

The scientists recorded Masai men, women and children saying, in their own language, “Look, look over there, a group of elephants are coming.” They also recorded Kamba men saying this phrase.

Masai people often come across elephants, which can result in violent (暴力的) hunting. Kamba people, however, mainly feed on agriculture, which does not generally bring them into violent touch with the animals.

When the team played recordings of these different voices through a hidden speaker, they found that elephant family groups showed more fear in response to the voice of a Masai man, than to a Kamba man’s voice. And the adult male Masai voices caused far more violent response than the voices of women or boys.

1.An elephant can tell a man from a woman by sense of ________.

A. touch B. sight C. smell D. hearing

2.How did the researchers get to know the elephants’ special ability?

A. By watching the elephants in the zoo. B. By playing voice recordings to them.

C. By recording the behaviors of elephants. D. By communicating with them in a special way.

3.We can learn from the passage that elephants are especially afraid of ________.

A. Masai men B. Masai women C. Kamba men D. Kamba women

4.What is the best title for the passage?

A. Elephants and Human Beings B. Differences Between Human Voices

C. Elephants Recognize Human Voices D. Elephants at War with Human Beings

A few months after Wu Xingu was congratulated by teachers for graduating from the university, the 23-year-old has been making his dream of relieving tens of thousands of teachers in China from drowning in marking papers(改卷) a reality.

Yitiku, an online software system based on Wu’s idea, eases the workload of teachers by doing many of the functions that they did, such as selecting the test questions, forming an exam paper, and preparing exercises for the students.

The features of Yitiku may sound quite simple, but this idea won his company millions of dollars from China’s Internet giant Tencent in January. The unexpectedly successful fund raising story became a popular conversation starter among the people in the education business.

“I can say it’s quite an achievement for me and our company. As far as I know, I’m the first CEO born after 1990s that Tencent has invested (投资) in, and we are the first online education company they have invested in.” Wu Xingyu told China Daily.

Different from other online companies that treat students as clients (客户), Yitiku has chosen teachers as their focus. “ We make the work of teachers easy. Usually it takes two to three hours for them to prepare a new exam paper. Now it’s just three clicks.” said Wu. He is quite satisfied with the major feature of the software.

Sitting in his 10-square-meter office in Zhonguancun, a hub of innovation (创新) in Beijing, Wu looks confident and chatty when talking about his business. His fast-speed answers give people an impression that he has years of experience in the online education sector. The fact is that he had been putting most of attention in directing courses at an art college until about a year ago.

1.The best title for this passage might be .

A. 23-year-old wants to ease workload of teachers B. the achievement made by a boy born after 1990s

C. Yitiku, an online software system loved by teachers D. A 23-year-old surprises the China’s Internet giant

2.Yitiku has the following function EXCEPT .

A. designing test papers B. choosing the test questions

C. teaching the students D. grading papers

3.The underlined word “hub” in the last paragraph means .

A. special center B. small house

C. big market D. supermarket

4.What will be continued after the last paragraph?

A. Wu’s family background B. how Wu got the great idea

C. what Wu studied in an art college D. Wu’s experience in directing courses

Why have so many awards ceremonies appeared recently? Shakespeare never won a prize, nor did Leonardo da Vinci or Adam Smith or Charles Dickens.

It would be possible to say, however, that in the past, scientists and artists could win "patronage" from rich people-a king or a lord would give the artist or scientist money to have them paint their palaces or help them develop new ways of making money. With the change in social systems across the world, this no longer happens. A lot of scientific research is now cither funded by the state or by private companies. Perhaps awards ceremonies are just the most recent face of this process.

However, there is more to it than that. When a film wins an Oscar, many more people will go and see it or buy the DVD. When a writer wins the Nobel prize, many more people buy his books. When a group win the MTV awards, the ceremony is seen by hundreds of thousands of people across the world. The result? The group sell lots more records.

Most awards ceremonies are now sponsored by big organizations or companies. This means that it is not only the person who wins the award who benefits but also the sponsors. The MTV awards, for example, are great for publicising not only music but also MTV itself

On the surface, it seems to be a "win-win" situation, with everyone being happy, but let me ask you a question-how far do you think that publicity and marketing are winning here, and how much genuine recognition of achievement is taking place?

1.Why are some successful people like Shakespeare mentioned at the very beginning of the passage?

A. To show great admiration. B. To provide the background.

C. To prepare for the topic. D. To answer the question.

2.Artists and scientists used to receive money from______.

A. rich people's support B. ales of their works

C. different awards D. the government

3.The writer thinks awards actually do a better job in____.

A. getting the winners' great achievements recognized

B. financially supporting a scientist's or an artist's work

C. improving the status of the greatest scientists or artists

D. earning more money for the awards ceremony sponsors

4.What is the writer's attitude towards awards ceremonies

A. Subjective. B. Approving.

C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.

After eight puppies(幼犬)were abandoned on the side of the road in Texasan animal shelter came to the rescue and brought them all the way from BrownwoodTexas to WintersvilleOhio. Their journey wasby no meansa simple one.

The puppies were first found fighting for their lives in a muddy channel. They were extremely weak and dehydrated(脱水)after being forced to protect themselves in the burning Texas sun. Once the puppies were discoveredtheir journey was far from over. They were immediately brought to what is known as a "high kill" shelterand after only a few hourswere scheduled for euthanasia. Things weren't looking good for the pups. Luckilythey were rescued once more.

“There's a group that specifically goes around to these high kill shelters and rescues the animals that are scheduled for euthanasia"said Brandi Damewoodthe JCHS Community Outreach Manager. "These guys were rescued by the Corrine T. Smith Animal Center. "

The puppies would eventually end up under the care of the Jefferson County Humane Society. This is because no-kill shelters and rescue organizations often work together to aid in urgent cases. An incredible network of shelters helping other shelters enables these miracle workers to save so many pets in danger of being put down prematurely.

"We have had a lot of other rescue groups come in and they help us get some of our animals adopted out like when we' re too full or things of that nature, so we kind of help each other out, and so this was a favor to help this particular shelter, "said Damewood.

The JCHS has appropriately titled the puppies' journey "the freedom ride". The 20-leg trip required 16 different volunteers to drive a total of 1,300 miles. But it was all worth it to save these adorable pups!

"We have a board member, Michelle Zdybicki, who is very active and involved in these transport groups, "said Damewood. "They would meet at specified stops, then the puppies would be transferred to the next driver for the next leg of the journey. "

Since arriving in Ohio, the puppies have been vaccinated and are hoping to find forever homes in the near future.

A. is a place to kill abandoned animals

2.The underlined word "euthanasia" in Para. 2 most probably means______.

A. practice of killing without pain

B. medical examination for an animal

C. physical care of a baby animal

D. supplies of food and housing for animals

3.What may happen to the puppies after arriving in Ohio ?

A. They will stay in a shelter forever. B. They may be adopted soon.

C. They cannot escape being killed. D. They may continue their journey.

4.The passage mainly tells us that______.

A. volunteers worked together to find homes for abandoned puppies

B. abandoned puppies caused animal shelters too much trouble

C. eight rescued puppies journeyed 1,300 miles in "freedom ride"

D. shelters tried their best to cure eight abandoned animals in Texas

If you've ever been annoyed by the sound of someone eatingespecially as they noisily slurp noodlesdon't worry, you're not alone.

A company has recently designed a fork that connects to an app on your smart phonewhich will then play noise cancelling sounds if you happen to slurp your noodles too loudly.

The fork was designed with a microphone in its handle that is trained to recognize the sound of slurping. The microphone will then send a signal to the phone app. setting off the noise cancelling sounds.

The company that designed the fork, called Otohiko fork, was inspired by what is called "noodle harassment" by social media users, which is running wild in Japan.

"The Japanese, who generally dislike noisy eating. consider it proper and even preferable to suck up one's noodles with a loud slurping sound".

Unfortunately for visitors, however, such enthusiastic slurping tends to grate on their nerves, which is what lead to the creation of the phrase" noodle harassment" in the first place.

The company behind the fork, Nissin, is the very same company that invented Cup Noodles, who brought instant noodles to the world nearly 70 years ago, so they are definitely concerned about whether or not foreigners are put off by the sound of slurping noodles.

The fork is being sold for a good $130, but those bothered enough by noodle slurpers will likely find it well worth the money.

Nissin is only planning a limited run of 5000 forks for the time being, which can now be pre-ordered only through their website.

The company is planning to begin releasing them just in time for the holidays. Of course, it still remains to be seen if the fork can be programmed to drown out the sound of loud chewers, which is probably of greater concern to sensitive Westerners.

1.From the text we can know that_________.

A. "noodle harassment" is used to reduce the noise

B. the Otohiko fork will encourage noodle sales in Japan

C. the microphone in its handle stops the slurping sound

D. the app on a smart phone operates just like a silencer

2.The new fork was invented_______.

A. to bring noodle eaters more fun B. to solve a practical problem

C. to change the Japanese eating habit D. to popularize instant noodles

3.The new fork will be the most helpful for______.

A. Western visitors to Japan B. fans of Japanese noodles

C. the spread of Japanese culture D. the reform of Japanese food

4.Which of the following can be the best title ?

A. A New Fork Wins Popularity B. Nissin Makes Another Invention

C. A Noise Cancelling Fork Born D. Good News for Western Visitors

Nowadays, it is very easy to find a student who are nearsighted. What's worse, the number of nearsighted students is still increased. From my point of view, there are many reasons why can cause nearsightedness. First and the foremost, wrong postures will easily result in nearsightedness. Reading on the dark places can lead to nearsightedness too. Moreover, too much reading without a rest can another important reason. My dear friends, it is highly time that we should pay attention to protecting your eyes. The most useful methods is to do eye exercises more often and relax for a while after reading. Watch green trees can also do good to the eyes.

How to Write a Story

Writing a detailed story takes patience and practice. 1., though , you can handle the challenge.

Keep the outline short

Avoid complete sentences. 2.. Long outlines with complete sentences end up being unnecessarily wordy. Sometimes they look like full paragraphs rather than brief outlines. Spending too much time and putting too much detail into your outline is effort you could be putting into writing the story itself.

Choose a point of view

Once you've written your outline and thought about the story you want to tell, decide at what point the reader enters the story. For you, and especially for the reader, the experience is a more intriguing one if the reader begins the story in the middle of the action. 3.. It will get your reader's attention immediately. He wants to continue reading surely. A boring opening means a bored reader who has no interest in moving on.

4.

Avoid giving everything away about the character in the first few paragraphs. Instead, consider different ways you can reveal different facets of the characters to your readers without stating them in an obvious way. 5.. If you take on too many, you'll find you won't be able to develop each of them fully in only a few pages.

A. Develop the characters

B. Instead, use short phrases or terms

C. Begin your story in an interesting way

D. If you're motivated and truly love to write

E. Before you write anything, you need an idea for a great story

F. Limit the number of main characters you include in your story

G. Once you've written your outline about the story that you want to tell

Though pigs may never fly, a two-year-old pig in Franschhoek, South Africa is proving they sure can paint! Meet Pigcasso, the world's first known pig artist whose masterpieces are selling for thousands of dollars to benefit Farm Sanctuary S. A. , Africa's only registered shelter for rescued farm animals.

Joanne Lefson, who saved Pigcasso from a slaughterhouse(屠宰场) two years ago, discovered the animal's artistic talent accidentally. The South African activist says, of the numerous toys presented to keep the then four-week-old piglet entertained, it was the paintbrushes that seemed to attract her the most. "They were the only thing she didn't eat," Lefson quips.

The rescuer decided to present the pig with canvas and paint and see what happened. To her delight, Pigcasso began creating works of art that can best be described as "abstract expressionism". Now weighing a hefty(重量)450 pounds, the celebrated pig, who loves to paint the area's scenic landscapes, has a dedicated "studio" at Farm Sanctuary S.A. where she resides. Lefson says, "I do not force her to paint. She paints when she wants to. "

Pigcasso's artwork, which has thus far been sold online, is currently on display at Cape Town's picturesque Victoria ~ Alfred Waterfront. Dubbed "Oink", the pop-up exhibition will run through March 5before heading to London-Paris-Berlin, and Amsterdam. Lefson says its main aim is to highlight the effect of animal agriculture on the planet and inspire change.

While Pigcasso is the first pig and first nonhuman to headline an exhibition, she is not the first animal to create masterpieces. Elephants, sea lions, and even penguins have shown similar artistic talent--in exchange for some treats, of course!

You can't always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belvacv doesn't think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet.

That's why he created Lampbrella, a lamp post with its own rain sensing umbrella.

The designer says he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. "Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy(伞蓬) built into a street lamp,"he said.

The Lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand. Sensors (传感器)then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining.

In addition to the rain sensor, there's also a 360 motion sensor on the fiberglass street lamp which detects whether anyone's using the Lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.

According to the designer, the Lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed, so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lighting strike. Each Lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Being     installed at 2 meters off the ground  it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians.

While there are no plans to take Lampbrella into production, Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department and insists this creation should be installed on the street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.

1.For what purpose did Belyaev create the Lampbrella?

A. To predict a heavy rain.

B. To check the weather forecast.

C. To protect people from the rain.

D. To remind people to take an umbrella.

2.What do we know from Belyaev's words in Paragraph 2?

A. His creation was inspired by an experience.

B. It rains a lot in the city of Saint Petersburg.

C. Street lamps are protected by canopies.

D. He enjoyed taking walks in the rain.

3.Which of the following show how the Lampbrella works?

A. Motor→canopy→sensors.

B. Sensors→motor→canopy.

C. Motor→sensors→canopy.

D. Canopy→motor→sensors.

4.What does Paragraph 5 mainly tell us about the Lampbreila?

A. Its moving speed.

B. Its appearance.

C. Its installation.

D. Its safety.
