Since many of you are planning to study at a college or university in the future, you may be carious to know what your future study will be like. This is the question I want to discuss with you today.

First, let’s talk about what your weekly timetable will look like. No matter what your major may be, you can expect to spend between four and six hours a week for each class attending lecture. Lectures are usually in very large rooms because some courses such as Introduction to Sociology or Economics often have as many as two or three hundred students, especially at large universities. In lectures, it’s very important for you to take notes on what the professor says because the information in a lecture is often different from that in your textbooks. Also, you can expect to have exam questions based on the lectures. So it isn’t enough to just read your textbooks; you have to attend lectures as well. In a typical week, you will also have a couple of hours of discussion for every class you take. The discussion part is a small group meeting usually with fewer than thirty students where you can ask questions about the lectures, the reading, and the homework. In large universities, graduate students called teaching assistants, usually direct discussion parts

If your major is chemistry, or physics, or another science, you’ll also have to spend several hours a week in the lab doing experiments. This means that science majors spend more time in the classroom than non-science majors do. On the other hand, people who major in subjects like literature or history usually have to read and write more than science majors do.

1.Which of the following is important for students to do according to the passage?

A. Reading just the textbooks. B. Taking notes in lectures.

C. Spending 5 days attending lectures. D. Getting on well with classmates.

2.What is not included in a discussion part?

A. Working with the help of university professors.

B. Asking questions about a lecture.

C. Talking over what the students have read.

D. Discussing the problems about homework.

3.According to the author, What’s the characteristic of science majors?

A. They have to work harder than non-science majors.

B. They do more experiments than other majors.

C. They consider experiments more important than discussions.

D. They spend less time on their studies than non-science majors.

4.What is the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?

A. To help students learn about university study.

B. To persuade students to attend lectures.

C. To encourage students to take part in discussions.

D. To advise students to choose proper majors.

“Sorry for keeping you waiting. I left my cell phone at homeso I went hack to get it” Adam said as he apologized to Vicky after arriving an hour late for their first date. Vicky tried to be politeso she forced a smile and replied“It’s all right. Let’s order something to eat.”While they were waiting for their food.Vicky discovered that Adam had been checking his cell phone. Just as she got the chance to talk to him·Adam’s cell phone rang and he answered it without delay. He talked continuously and totally ignored his datewho was sitting right next to him. Twenty minutes later, when Adam finally hung up and turned hack to Vickyhe saw nothing but an angry face. “Why don't you date your cell phone?”said Vicky. Thenshe stood up and shouted“Don’t ever call me again!”

We can understand why Vicky was so angry at Adam. In fact, like Adam, many people in modern society can't stand to be separated from their cell phones. With their cell phones, they talk to others, listen to music, check e-mall, and download applications as well as photos. Their dependence on this technological device has become so great that the cell phone is now often considered a necessity rather than a luxury ( 奢侈品). Some people cannot even imagine life without their cell phones. As a result, a psychological(心理学的) phrase known as "disconnect anxiety" was born.

According to psychologists, when these people are not using their phones. they may start to feel uneasy. Some feel socially separated without their cell phone. Others worry about not being able to respond to emergencies in time. Still others are so psychologically influenced by their cell phones that they often believe their phones have been ringing without their knowledge. Those who suffer from disconnect anxiety frequently check their cell phones for any missed calls or messages. In addition, they like to keep in touch with their friends-even just to kill time. What's more, if these heavy cell phone users discover that they have forgotten to bring their cell phones along with them, they will insist on returning home to get their "cells".

It's nice to have a cell phone, and it makes sense, of course,  to enjoy all the advantages this clever product has brought. However, we need to use it wisely. For example, when we are doing something important, we should turn off our cell phones to concentrate on our work. As for Adam, he had better leave his cell phone at home on his next date with Vicky-if he gets another chance to go out with her!

1.Why was Vicky angry with Adam and asked him not to call her again?

2.How may a person with "disconnect anxiety" feel without the cell phone?

3.What is the author's opinion about using cell phones?

4.Is it necessary for those heavy cell phone users to shorten the time of using cell phones? Why or why not?

Looking out the window of his truck, Bob Fitzgerald sees large, undesirable plants growing in the fields. Visitors to his neighborhood around the Chesapeake Bay mainly see dying forests and empty farmland. Fitzgerald says the land has been in his family since the 17th century, and it has been sinking for hundreds of years. As sea levels rise salt water is entering rivers and other waterways. As a result, the ground is becoming too salty for crops to grow.

Around the world, scientists warn that coastal (沿海 ) farms are under threat from rising seas and salt water. A World Bank report predicts that rice production in coastal areas may fall by 15 percent by the year 2050. Another study found that hundreds of millions of people will be forced to move inland because of rising waters.

Kate Tully, an agroecologist(农业生态学家) wants to keep coastal farmers in business as the seas rise. The United States Department of Agriculture gave Tully and other researchers $ 1.1 million to study the problem. She and her team hope to give farmers ways to stay on their land. She told media that they are testing different crops on pieces of land around the coastal areas.

"Sorghum is my new favorite crop because it Can grow without rain and it can grow with lots of rain. So this is actually a pretty good option. " The grain crop may be a good choice to feed the nearly 600 million chickens raised in the area each year. As farmers know, chickens can deal with salt, dry weather conditions and heavy rains. Tally's group is also testing other kinds of grain and a few crops that they believe can grow in the salt.

Yet just being able to grow a crop is not enough. The crop has to be profitable. So an economist on the team will be looking at the numbers. But continuing to farm the land may not be the best plan of action. Some people believe the land should he given back to nature. They say the fields should be turned into wetlands, which are popular with duck hunters. "There's money in duck hunting," fully said. Hunting organizations will pay farmers for a permit to hunt on their land. Farmers could earn a lot of money from duck hunters, she said.

Tully and her team are just getting started. It will be a few years before they really understand how to save the farms.

Freedom of the press is rightly protected in most societies, yet it is just this protection that sometimes allows this freedom to be made bad use of. The press has a strong influence which can bring about significant changes to the lives of ordinary people. The story of the first quintuplets(五胞胎) in America clearly showed the power of the press.

There was a poor family living in Aberdeen, a small town in the U.S.A.Raising five children was already a struggle for the poor parents of this family. When the mother learned that it was another four girls and one more boy that were on the way,she and her husband were shocked beyond belief. Without a doubt, they were going to face even more urgent money problems.

However, this event changed their lives in ways they had never expected. The day after the birth of the five babies, there were sixty reporters and photographers waiting outside their door. The couple soon made national headlines, for they had become the parents of the first quintuplets in America.

The family gained fame and money overnight. Newspapers and magazines offered them huge sums of money for the rights to publish their stories as well as their photos. Gifts poured in not only from unknown people, but also from baby food and soap manufacturers who wanted to advertise their products. Though their lives were indeed improved, reporters kept pressing for interviews, which forced the family to hire lawyers to act as spokespeople for them at news conferences.

Moreover, the birth also brought great changes to Aberdeen. A new highway had been developed, since this town was likely to attract thousands of visitors. Even the name of the town on the road signs was changed to "Quint-City, U.S.A. " Locals also discussed the possibility of setting up a "quint museum" to satisfy the curiosity of the public and to protect the family from gossipy visitors at the same time.

While the babies were still quietly sleeping in the hospital, their parents began paying the price for fame. It would never again be possible for them to lead normal lives. The town itself received so much attention that almost each of the locals there was affected more or less. This was the power of the press, but such power could easily be misapplied.

1.How did the parents feel when they knew the oncoming quintuplets?

A. Unbelievable. B. Disappointed.

C. Proud. D. Confident.

2.Which of the following was the result of the event?

A. The museum became popular.

B. Transportation to Aberdeen improved.

C. The production of baby food increased.

D. More newspapers and magazines came out.

3.What is the author's attitude towards the power of press applied to this event?

A. Unconcerned. B. Puzzled.

C. Supportive. D. Sceptical.

Travelling is a great way to interact with a culture which might be completely different from your own.

1. Before I moved to Sicily I had travelled around the whole of Italy, the south and the north, and I absolutely fell in love with the culture and the language, so I was inspired to learn the language and also to move here. And here I am now, living in Sicily.

2.When you get back home you'll have lots of stories to tell your friends and family. Even if something isn't very fun, it will be funny to look back and laugh at those awkward or harsh moments. For example, I was travelling with a group of friends in Pisa and we took the wrong bus to get to the beach area, so we ended up being stuck in the rain and having to walk back.

When you travel, you expose yourself to different people.3.It's a great learning experience for both you and the other person because you can share and exchange your own ideas and opinions on a range of topics. For example, I met an Iranian philosopher and we talked about the nature of magic. A lot of his ideas were shaped by his Iranian background and Iranian philosophy.4.

Travelling is the realization of home.5.Since I've been away from London I've come to appreciate the little things that I used to take for granted, like our amazing transport- everything runs on time; everything runs well. So sometimes it takes being away from home to realize how much you absolutely love your hometown.

A. It was a really interesting discussion.

B. Travelling will make you a really good storyteller.

C. Travelling could enrich your awareness of the world.'

D. They may have a completely different outlook on life.

E. We realize how much we miss our hometown when we travel.

F. Travelling might just convince you to move to another country.

G. Being away from home, we miss our friends and our family very much.

On a number of drives throughout my childhood, my mother would suddenly pull over the car to examine a flower by the side of the road or rescue a beetle from tragedy while I, in my late teens and early twenties, sat impatiently in the car.

Though Mother's Day follows Earth Day, for me, they have always been related to each other. My mom has been “green” since she became concerned about the environment. Like her mother and her grandmother before her," mom saves glass jars, empty cheese containers and reuses her plastic bags.

Mom creates a kind of harmonious relationship with wildlife in her yard, She knows to pick the apples on her trees a little early to avoid the bears and that if she leaves the bird feeders out at night, it is likely that they will be knocked down by a family of raccoons, Spiders that make their way into the house and are caught in juice glasses will be set loose in the garden.

I try to teach my children that looking out for the environment starts with being aware of the environment. On busy streets, we look for dandelions (蒲公英) to fly in the wind; we say hello to neighborhood cats and pick up plastic cups and paper bags. This teaching comes easily, I realize, because I was taught so well by example. Mom didn't need to lecture. She simply slowed down enough to enjoy living in it and with that joy came mercy and an instinct for protection.

I am slowing down and it isn't because of the weight of my nearly forty years on the planet it is out of my concern for the planet itself. I've begun to save glass jars and reuse packing envelopes. I pause in my daily tasks to watch the squirrels race each other in the trees above my house.

Last summer, in the company of my son and daughter, I planted tomatoes in my yard. With the heat of August around me, I ate the first while sitting on my low wall with dirt on my hands. Warm from the sun, it burst on my tongue with a sweetness I immediately, wanted to share with my mom.

1.Why does the author say Earth Day is connected with Mother's Day?

A. Because Mother's Day falls shortly after Earth Day.

B. To stress how much her mother cares about the environment.

C. To stress that all the, older women in her family are environmentalists.

D. Because her mother shows her how to be friendly to nature on Mother S Day.

2.We can infer from the text that       .

A. the author s mother knows how to get rid of the wildlife in her yard

B. the author 'S mother used to lecture her to protect the environment

C. the author realizes that she should teach her children by example as well

D. the author believes that only by learning to slow down can we enjoy life

3.What can be learned from the last paragraph?

A. The author is proud of her sweet tomatoes.

B. The author really appreciates her mother's teaching.

C. Planting tomatoes is a way of protecting environment.

D. The author likes eating tomatoes planted by herself.

4.The writer's attitude towards her mom's behavior changed in the order of      .

A. negative— understanding —supportive B. supportive— doubtful—negative

C. understanding —critical—supportive D. doubtful—critical— positive

Memory, they say, is a matter of practice and exercise. If you have the wish and really make a conscious effort, then you can quite easily improve your ability to remember things. But even if you are successfulthere are times when your memory seems to play tricks on you.

Sometimes you remember things that really did not happen. One morning last week, for example, I got up and found that I had left the front door unlocked all night, yet I clearly remember locking it carefully the night before.

Memory “tricks" work the other way as well. Once in a while, you remember not doing something, and then find out that you did. One day last month, for example, I was sitting in a barber shop waiting for my turn to get a haircut, and suddenly I realized that I had got a haircut two days before at the barber shop across the street from my office.

We always seem to find something funny and amusing in incidents caused by people s forgetfulness or absent -mindedness. Stories about absent -minded professors have been told for years, and we never get tired of hearing new ones. Unfortunately, however absent -mindedness is not always funny.     My daughter Kelly is a cautious person. She needs to warm up to situations, and is hesitant to try new things. When with close friends, she becomes a leader who laughs loudly and chants," Girls rule, boys drool." But when that comfort zone is not around her, she is shy and nervous.

This has been challenging for me at times. “Shy" is not a word that I think has ever been used to describe me. But this has been a year of firsts for my girl that has filled her with a new sense of confidence. This year she moved to lap lane in swimming where she was preparing for a swim team. This year she learned to ride a bike without training wheels. And this year she completed her first kids ' triathlon (三项全能).

On Saturday, with a thunderstorm coming soon and my son's birthday party later in the day, we all went out in the dark of the morning for Kelly to participate in her first triathlon. We practiced transitions from swim to bike to run with her, we got all the equipment she'd need, and we kept talking about the race. But as we waited the two hours for the older kids to finish before her turn, she held my leg a little harder and told me she loved me a few too many times. She was nervous but trying to keep it together.

And then it was her turn. From the second she jumped into the water, my heart soared. My daughter transformed into the most confident human being I had ever seen. She dominated that swim, crushed that bike ride and ran to the finish with the biggest smile on her face.

I can honestly say that I never felt so proud of someone in my entire life. It wasn't because she did a sport or anything like that. It was because she was afraid of something and conquered that fear with confidence and a fire I hadn't seen before.

All day I would find myself just looking over at her and smiling. She might be. Wearing the finalist medal but I felt like I won that day. I won the chance to see my girl shine.

Shine on, sweet baby.

1.What can we learn from Paragraph 3?

A. The race began in the early morning.

B. The whole family gave Kelly support.

C. Kelly was eager for her turn in the race.

D. Kelly prepared for her brother's birthday party.

2.Seeing Kelly's performance in the race, the author felt      .

A. worried and hesitant B. anxious and uneasy

C. excited and proud D. curious and concerned

3.In Paragraph 5, the underlined word “conquered" probably means       .

A. to defeat someone especially in a competition

B. to take control of an area and its people by force

C. to become very popular or successful in a place

D. to succeed in dealing with or control something

4.In the ending paragraphs the author “felt like I won that day" because Kelly       .

A. expressed love to her B. overcame the fear

C. won the gold medal D. took part in the sport

My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment. She cooked for students and teachers to support the family.

There was one day during elementary school when my mom came over to say hello to me. I was so embarrassed.

How could she do this to me? I ignored her, threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school one of my classmates said, “Your mom only has one eye!”

I wanted to bury myself. I also wanted my mom to just disappear. I confronted (面对) her that day and said, “If you’re only going to make me a laughing stock, why don’t you just die?”

My mom did not respond. I didn’t even stop to think for a second about what I had said, because I was full of anger. I took no notice of her feelings at all.

I wanted to be out of that house, and have nothing to do with her. So I studied really hard, and got a chance to go abroad for further education.

Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. I had kids of my own. I was happy with my life, my kids and the comforts. Then one day, my mother came to visit me. She hadn’t seen me in years and she didn’t even meet her grandchildren.

When she stood by the door, my children laughed at her, and I shouted at her for coming over uninvited. I screamed at her, “How dare you come to my house and scare my children! GET OUT OF HERE! NOW!!!”

And to this, my mother quietly answered, “Oh, I’m so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address.” and she was soon out of sight.

One day, a letter regarding a school reunion (同学聚会) came to my house. So I lied to my wife that I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went to the old house just out of curiosity.

My neighbors said that she died. I did not shed (流出 ) a single tear. They handed me a letter that she had wanted me to have.

Are you feeling anxious about your test next week? Here are some tips that will help you in dealing with stress(压力) and anxiety.

1.

One of the most important ways of avoiding test anxiety is to prepare well in advance. Study regularly for a few hours every day. It helps in increasing the confidence of students.

2.

If students are not able to deal with anxiety or nervousness, they could talk to their teachers, student counselors(辅导员), parents or friends. Parents should also avoid pressurizing(加压) their kids to do well. Create a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere (放松的气氛) at home. Then your children can study without any tension(紧张). Another important point that arises here is neither the students nor the parents should compare the children with their other classmates and friends.

3.

Do not forget to eat and sleep properly. Many times due to anxiety students avoid sleep and starve themselves. They should sleep for at least 6-7 hours a day and eat nutritious and healthy food. Exercising regularly is equally important as talking to friends and socializing(社交).

4.

Plan your studies well. Chart(制图) out a timetable and take proper breaks between studying. Along with the study time, allot (分配) time to relax and do what you love to do. Practicing simple breathing skills will also help reduce stress.

5.. While it is important to gain good scores in tests, it is not the most important thing in life. Learning to deal with nervousness and stress will not only help them to do well in school tests, but also in their future life.

A.Third, physical fitness

B.First, study regularly

C.Fourth, prepare schedule

D.Second, reduce study pressure

E.Students should remember that tests are just a part of life

F.You should go to bed early

G.You’d better turn to your teachers for help

My teenage son Karl became withdrawn after his father died. As a single parent, I tried to do my best to talk to him. But the more I tried, the more he pulled away. When his report card arrived during his junior year, it said that he had been absent 95 times from classes and had six falling grades for the year. At this rate he would never graduate. I sent him to the school adviser, and I even begged him. Nothing worked.

One night I felt so powerless that I got down on my knees and begged for help. “Please God, I can’t do any thing more for my son. I’m at the end of my rope. I’m giving the whole thing up to you.”

I was at work when I got a phone call. A man introduced himself as the headmaster. “I want to talk to you about Karl’s absences.” Before he could say another word, I cried and all my disappointment and sadness over Karl came pouring out into the ears of this stranger. “I love my son but I just don’t know what to do. I’ve tried everything to get Karl to go back to school and nothing has worked. It’s out of nay hands. ”For a moment there was silence on the other end of the line. The headmaster seriously said, “Thank you for your time”, and hung up.

Karl’s next report card showed a marked improvement in his grades. Finally, he even made the honor roll. In his fourth year, I attended a parent-teacher meeting with Karl. I noticed that his teachers were astonished at the way he had turned himself around. On our way home, he said, “Mum, remember that call from the headmaster last year?” I nodded. “That was me. I thought I’d play a joke but when I heard what you said, it really hit me how much I was hurting you. That's when I knew I had to make you proud.”

1.There was silence on the other end of the line because  __________

One afternoon I toured an art museum while waiting for my husband to finish a business meeting. I was looking forward to a quiet view of the wonderful works.

A young couple viewing the paintings ahead of me chatted nonstop between themselves. I watched them a moment and decided she was doing all the talking. I admired his patience for tolerating her constant words. Disturbed by their noise, I moved on.

I encountered them several times as I moved through the various rooms of art. Each time I heard her constant talking, I moved away quickly.

I was standing at the counter of the museum gift store doing some shopping when the couple approached the exit. Before they left, the man reached into his pocket and pulled out a white object. He turned it into a long cane (手杖) and then tapped his way into the coatroom to get his wife’s jacket.

“He’s a brave man,” the clerk at the counter said, “Most of us would give up if we were blinded at such a young age. During his recovery, he made a promise that his life wouldn’t change. So, as before, he and his wife come in whenever there’s a new art show.”

“But what does he get out of the art?” I asked, “He can’t see.”

“Can’t see! You’re wrong. He sees a lot. More than you or I do,” the clerk said, “His wife describes each painting so he can see it in his head.”

I learned something about patience, courage and love that day. I saw the patience of a young wife describing paintings to a person without sight and the courage of a husband who would not allow blindness to change his life.

And I saw the love shared by two people as I watched this couple walk away arm in arm.

1.Which of the following statements is true?

A. The husband was doing all the talking when the couple viewed the works.

B. The husband tapped his way to the coatroom to get his own jacket.

D. The husband allowed blindness to change his life.

2.The underlined word “encountered” in the passage means “________”.

A. cheated B. met

C. talked D. argued

3.We can infer from the passage that ___________.

A. the man had his eyes blinded in a fight

B. the man can see very well while visiting the museum

C. the woman was very patient and devoted to his husband

D. the man often wasted time by visiting exhibitions

Before there was the written word, there was the language of dance. Dance expresses love and hate, joy and sorrow, life and death, and everything else in between.

1.We dance from Florida to Alaska, from north to south and sea to sea. We dance at weddings, birthdays, office parties and just to fill the time.

“I adore dancing,” says Lester Bridges, the owner of a dance studio in Iowa. “I can’t imagine doing anything else with my life.” Bridges runs dance classes for all ages. “Teaching dance is wonderful. 2.It’s great to watch them. For many of them, it’s a way of meeting people and having a social life.”

3.“I can tell you about one young couple,” says Bridges. “They’re learning to do traditional dances. They arrive at the class in low spirits and they leave with a smile. 4.

So, do we dance in order to make ourselves feel better, calmer, healthier? Andrea Hillier says, “Dance, like the pattern of a beating heart, is life. Even after all these years, I want to get better and better.5. I find it hard to stop! Dancing reminds me I’m alive.”

A. So why do we dance?

B. Dance in the U.S. is everywhere.

C. If you like dancing outdoors, come to America.

D. My older students say it makes them feel young.

E. I keep practicing even when I’m extremely tired.

F. Dancing seems to change their feeling completely.

G. They stayed up all night long singing and dancing.

Adults understand what it feels like to be flooded with objects. Why do we often assume that more is more when it comes to kids and their belongings? The good news is that I can help my own kids learn earlier than I did how to live more with less.

I found the pre-holidays a good time to encourage young children to donate less-used things, and it worked. Because of our efforts, our daughter Georgia did decide to donate a large bag of toys to a little girl whose mother was unable to pay for her holiday due to illness. She chose to sell a few larger objects that were less often used when we promised to put the money into her school fund(基金)(our kindergarten daughter is serious about becoming a doctor)

For weeks, I've been thinking of bigger, deeper questions: How do we make it a habit for them? And how do we train ourselves to help them live with, need, and use less? Yesterday, I sat with my son, Shepherd, determined to test my own theory on this. I decided to play with him with only one toy for as long as it would keep his interest. I expected that one toy would keep his attention for about five minutes, ten minutes, max. I chose a red rubber ball-simple, universally available. We passed it, he tried to put it in his mouth, he tried bouncing it, rolling it, sitting on it, throwing it. It was totally, completely enough for him. Before I knew it an hour had passed and it was time to move on to lunch.

We both became absorbed in the simplicity of playing together. He had my full attention and I had his. My little experiment to find joy in a single object worked for both of us.

1.What do the words “more is more” in paragraph 1 probably mean?

A. The more, the better.    B. Enough is enough.

C. More money, more worries.    D. Earn more and spend more.

2.What made Georgia agree to sell some of her objects?

A. Saving up for her holiday    B. Raising money for a poor girl

C. Adding the money to her fund    D. Giving the money to a sick mother

3.Why did the author play the ball with Shepherd?

A. To try out an idea

B. To show a parent’s love

C. To train his attention

D. To help him start a hobby

4.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Take It or Leave It    B. A Lesson from Kids

C. Live More with Less    D. The Pleasure of Giving
