“Attention, everyone!” Miss Dalrymple looked at her class of ten-year-olds. “Today we are going to create a special card for Father’s Day, which falls on this weekend.” Then she busied herself handing out the paper and art materials to her noisy pupils.

They were a mixed punch. Some came from the rich side of the town, but the majorities were from parents who struggled to get jobs. So she had not been eager to carry out this activity.

“Think about all the things that your dad does that make him special,” she said loudly as she approached the last table. “You can write a poem or short story thinking of the positive characteristics that make your dad special. The written part of this activity should be completed before you start to decorate your card.”

Andrew looked at the blank page. He had never met, spoken to, or been hugged by his dad, so how could he write about him? Once when he was looking in his grandma’s photo box, he had seen an old black and white photo but it was badly creased(弄皱) and difficult to recognize any clear features. She had quickly taken it from him and buried it deeply among the rest, never to be found again. After thinking for a while, he wrote:

Dear Dad,

You are a person I do not know and would probably not recognize as I only saw an old photo of you a long time ago. I think and wonder about you often, especially when I have no one to talk to about the Saturday fixtures(体育活动). One day when I grow up I will do an Internet search to find you, but I am not sure whether I will be successful as several attempts by the Child Support Agency have not been successful. Happy Father’s Day, Dad.

Love,

Andrew

C. The students didn’t get along well with each other.

D. The students’ family conditions were quite different.

3.Why did Andrew have difficulty in making a special card for his father?

A. Because he had never seen his father.

B. Because his father was not a successful man.

C. Because he forgot all the things his father did.

D. Because he and his grandma didn’t like his father.

4.What can we learn from Andrew’s letter?

A. Andrew’s father has been dead.

Nowadays many people drive instead of taking a bus or walking to work. It causes more traffic accidents. As the student, what can we do to guarantee our safe? First of all, the traffic rules must be strict obeyed. When we cross streets, wait until the traffic light turn green. Next, don't forget walk on the pavement. Finally, I think it very dangerously to wear headphones while walking or cycling, Since we can't pay enough attention on the traffic around us, so accidents may happen. Taking good cure of ourselves and don’t let our parents worry about them.

Each time Chinese New Year is approaching, preparations are underway around the world. Here are some Chinatowns for those outside of China wishing to mark the day.

London

Although it may not be as large or as long-built as others, having only become a center for the Chinese community during the 1950s, London’s Chinatown is perfectly formed little firework that knows how to see in the year with a bang. Decorated with red lanterns, previous years have seen shows with acrobatics(杂技), martial arts(武术),dance and opera nearby.

San Francisco

San Francisco’s Chinatown is perhaps the most famous in the United States. The city was the main entry-point for Chinese who had crossed the Pacific to the USA during the early 19th century. Bangkok

With an about100-year-old history, the Thai capital’s Chinatown contains complex streets offering all kinds of tasty treats, clothes, toys and antiques. Sunday market days are such a good time to get the full atmosphere of the neighborhood. The area is also known for its gold dealers, whose shops line the road.

Mauritius

Found in Port Louis, this Mauritian Chinatown shows the island nation’s rich multicultural diversity. Established in the early years of the 20th century by settlers from China, its tiny shops and restaurants serve locals and visitors. During the Chinese Spring Festival, the most exciting sight is the Dragon Dances on Rue Royale when Chinese musicians and dancers perform the traditional lion dances through the streets.

“Mum, what does it mean when someone tells you that they have a skeleton(骨骼)in the closet(衣橱)?” Jessica asked. “A skeleton in the closet?” her mother paused thoughtfully, “Well, it’s something that you would rather not have anyone else know about. For example, if in the past, someone in Dad’s family had been arrested for stealing a horse, It would be ‘a skeleton in his family’s closet’. He really wouldn’t want any neighbor to know about it.”

“Why pick on my family?” Jessica’s father said with anger. “Your family history isn’t so good, you know. Wasn’t your great-great-grandfather a prisoner who was transported to Australia for his crimes?” “Yes, but people these days say that you are not a real Australian unless your ancestors arrived as prisoners.” Gosh, sorry I asked. I think I understand now,” Jessica cut in before things grew worse.

After dinner, the house was very quite. Jessica’s parents were still quite angry with each other. Her mother was ironing clothes and every now and then she glared at her husband, who hid behind his newspaper pretending to read. When she finished, she gathered the freshly pressed clothes in her arms and walked to Jessica’s closet. Just as she opened the door and reached in to hang a skirt, a bony arm stuck out from the dark depths and a bundle of white bones fell to the floor, Jessica’s mother sank into a faint(晕倒), walking only when Jessica put a cold, wet cloth on her forehead. She looked up to see the worried faces of her husband and daughter.

“What happened? Where am I?” she asked. “You just destroyed the school’s skeleton, Mum,” explained Jessica, “ I brought it home to help me with my health project.     It is not only praise or punishment that determines a child’s level of confidence. There are some other important ways we shape our kids—particularly by giving instructions and commands in a negative or positive choice of words. For example, we can say to a child “Don’t run into traffic!” or “Stay on the footpath close to me.” In using the latter, you will be helping your kids to think and act positively, and to feel competent in a wide range of situation, because they know what to do, and aren’t scaring themselves about what not to do.

Actually, it is all in the way the human mind works. What we think, we automatically rehearse. For example, if someone offered you a million dollars not to think of a blue monkey for two minutes, you wouldn’t be able to do it. When a child is told “Don’t fall off the tree,” he will think of two things: “don’t” and “fall off the tree”. That is, he will automatically create the picture of falling off the tree in his mind. A child who is vividly imagining falling off the tree is much more likely to fall off. So it is far better to use “Hold on to the tree carefully.”

Clearly, positive instructions help kids to understand the right way to do things. Kids do not always know how to be safe, or how to react to the warning of the danger in negative words. So parents should make their commands positive. “Sam, hold on firm to the side of the boat” is much more useful than “Don’t you dare to fall out of the boat?” or worse still “How do you think I’ll feel if you drown?” The changes are small but difference is obvious.

Children learn how to guide and organize themselves from the way we guide them with our words, so it pays to be positive.

1.Positive choice of words helps kids to ______.

A. do things carefully    B. learn in different situations

C. improve their imagination    D. build up their confidence

2.What can we infer from Paragraph 2?

A. One can’t help imagining what is heard.

B. A child will act on what is instructed.

C. A child will fall off the tree when told not to.

D. One won’t think of a blue monkey when given money.

3.Which of the following commands helps kids to be safe?

A. Fasten your seat belt.

B. Don’t play by the lake.

C. How do you think I’ll feel if you get hurt?

D. Don’t you dare to walk through the red light?

4.The main idea of the passage is that ______.

A. praise makes kids confident    B. right instructions keep kids safe

C. positive instructions guide kids    D. clear commands make kids different

My wife, daughter, and I moved into our home nine years ago and we spent a lot of time and energy in the yard to get it looking like the way it does today. We live on a corner, higher than street level, and the entire side of the yard is surrounded by a professionally built rock wall. The front of the house though is another story because instead of a wall along the sidewalk, the rocks appear to be just thrown up onto the dirt as if someone were in a hurry to finish.

We did the best we could with what we had to work with and called this area our “rock garden”. Whenever we had leftover flowers or plants, Denise or I would stick them out front, just to bring some color to the area. We would do all of the yard work on our own, even the tiring weed-pulling.

Last summer I had reached the end of the rock garden and found a tiny little plant that I could not immediately identify, I knew I didn’t plant it and Denise claimed that she didn’t either. We decided to let it continue growing until we could figure out what it was.

Weeks passed and as I made my way back to the mystery plant, it appeared to be a Sunflower with a tall skinny stalk(茎,杆)and only one head on it. I decided to baby it along and weed around it. As I pulled rocks from the area to get to the weeds, I noticed something unusual. The Sunflower had not started where I saw the stalk begin. It actually had begun under a big rock and grown under and around it to reach the sun.

That’s when I realized that if a tiny little Sunflower didn’t let a big rock stand in its way of developing, we too have the ability of doing the same thing. Once our environment begins to see that we believe in ourselves like that little Sunflower, we can attain the same nourishment(营养)and growth as well.

Stand tall like the Sunflower and be proud of who and what you are and the environment will begin to support you. You will find a way to go under or around your big obstacle in order to reach your desires.

1.We can know from the first paragraph that ______.

A. the author finished building his home hurriedly

B. the author’s family have lived in this home for nine years

C. the author’s home is made of rock walls

D. there is a wall along the sidewalk

2.The author found it unusual that ______.

A. the mystery plant turned out to be a Sunflower

B. the Sunflower had a tall stalk and only one head

C. the Sunflower grew under and around a big rock

D. the Sunflower had started where the stalk was seen

3.Which of the following best describes the Sunflower?

A. Brave and stubborn    B. Confident and persistent

C. Optimistic and modest    D. Mysterious and devoted

4.What can be inferred from this passage?

A. Human beings are able to remove obstacles

B. The universal truth made the sunflower survive

C. A big rock blocked out the sunlight of the sunflower

D. We can achieve success as long as we are self-confident

Today, when I walked to home after school, I found the sunset was very beautifully. I stopped at the park and sit on a bench to appreciate the scenery. There was so many people at the park, most of whom were old couples, but they went for a walk. There was a special couple walk hand in hand, which caught my attention. The old woman couldn’t walk well because there was something wrong with her right legs. The old man took care of them carefully. They set good example to the young couples, showing that true love is. Against the sunset, they made up a beautiful scene.

Five steps to make a difference to the oceans

The oceans are being seriously polluted now. Plastics are harming the marine (海产的) life. Carbon pollution is warming the oceans and increasing their acidity(酸度). Waters are being overfished. 1. Here are some steps we can take to help make a difference.

1. Bring our own bags. 2. Try carrying a reusable bag at all times, including while traveling, and bringing our own things to work to avoid relying on plastic items.

2. Talk about it now. We should carry that conversation into public places. Talk to our friends and family about why the ocean is important and why we take steps to help it, and challenge them to do the same.

3. 3. A good way to make a difference is to organize a garbage cleanup now. Whether it’s an inland cleanup or one near the coast, plan one in our community.

4. Throw away our cars. 4. When we hang out, we should reduce our carbon footprint, which may help slow global warming and ocean acidification as well as conserve energy

5. Recycle, obviously. Experts say recycling is an obvious action to take. Check on what can be recycled in our community, and make sure you’re separating out your plastic.

In summary, think about it more and act on it more. The more someone thinks about plastics and plastics pollution, the environment and the consequences of our actions, the more likely they are to act on it. 5.

A. Plan a cleanup.

B. Choose public transportation over driving our cars.

C. Driving cars is not a good way to protect the oceans.

D. However, experts say there’s still hope to make a difference.

E. However, marine life plays a very important role in the oceans.

F. If everyone can contribute to the oceans, the oceans will be well preserved.

G. Whenever we put something, we should bring our own bag, but not a plastic one.

It’s a real case of fish out of water. Blennies (鲇鱼) in the South Pacific Ocean are gradually relocating to land to escape their predators (捕食者), in an example of evolution in action.

Fish first began crawling onto dry land about 400 million years ago, kicking off an evolutionary chain of events that led to humans. But their reasons for exiting the sea have been uncertain.

To look for clues, Terry Ord at the University of New South Wales in Australia has been studying several species of blennies at Rarotonga, the largest of the Cook Islands.

At low tide, blennies are commonly found swimming in rock pools around the edges of the island. But when high tide moves in, they climb up to dry land and move around the rocks until the tide retreats.

The researchers found that this is most likely to avoid predators that swim in with the rising tide – mainly bigger fish like lionfish.

To test what would happen if blennies did not have an escape plan, they made blenny models and sank them in the sea. The mimics ended up with wounds, bite marks and chunks-missing.

Of course, there are still dangers for blennies on land, like the occasional bird attack, but the predation risk on land is a third that of underwater.

What’s more, moving onto land has additional benefits for blennies. Holes in the rocks provide sheltered nests for laying eggs, and they can maintain their diet of bacteria.

In fact, several species of blenny fish at Rarotonga have already made the full transition to land-dwelling (陆生的) species. They continue to breathe with their gills, but have developed stronger tail fins and jump from rock to rock.

Ord believes that many evolutionary processes have been driven by the need to escape predators. “It is often assumed that animals move homes to find new sources of food, but in many cases, escaping predators is a stronger motivation.” he says.

1.Why do blennies climb to dry land when high tide comes?

A. To acquire better health.    B. To search for more food.

C. To seek safer living conditions.    D. To adapt to a new environment.

2.What does the underlined part “The mimics” in Paragraph 6 refer to?

A. The rocks in the water.    B. The predators of blennies.

C. The researchers of blennies.    D. The models of blennies.

3.What can be concluded from the last paragraph?

A. Ord’s research opens a new view.

B. Ord wonders why animals move homes.

C. Ord shows us the benefits of blennies’ evolution.

D. Ord has discovered how fish have become land dwellers.

4.Which of the following could be the best title for the text?

A. Blennies’ Living Habits

B. Why Blennies Choose to Live on Land

C. Blennies’ Evolutionary Process

D. How Blennies Escape from their Predators

A new app aims to help parents interpret what their baby wants based on the sound of their cry. The free app ChatterBaby, which was released last month, analyzes the acoustic (声学的) features of a baby’s cry, to help parents understand whether their child might be hungry, fussy or in pain. While critics say caregivers should not rely too much on their smartphone, others say it’s a helpful tool for new or tired parents.

Ariana Anderson, a mother of four, developed the app. She originally designed the technology to help deaf parents better understand why their baby was upset, but soon realized it could be a helpful tool for all new parents.

To build a database, Anderson and her team uploaded 2,000 audio samples of infant(婴儿) cries. She used cries recorded during ear piercings and vaccinations to distinguish pain cries. And to create a baseline for the other two categories, a group of moms had to agree on whether the cry was either hungry or fussy.

Anderson’s team continues to collect data and hopes to make the app more accurate by asking parents to get specific about what certain sounds mean.

Pediatrician Eric Ball pointed out that evaluating cries can never be an exact science. “I think that all of the apps and technology that new parents are using now can be helpful but need to be taken seriously,” Ball said ,“ I do worry that some parents will get stuck in big data and turn their parenting into basically a spreadsheet(电子表格) which I think will take away the love and caring that parents are supposed to be providing for the children. ”

But Anderson said the aim of the app is to have parents interpret the results, not to provide a yes or no answer. The Bells, a couple using this app, say it’s a win-win. They believe they are not only helping their baby now but potentially others in the future.

1.How does the app judge what babies want?

A. By collecting data.

B. By recording all the sounds.

C. By analyzing the sound of their cries.

D. By asking parents about specific messages.

2.What was the app designed for in the beginning?

A. All new parents.    B. Deaf parents.

C. Ariana Anderson.    D. Crying babies.

3.What is Ball’s opinion about the app?

A. Parents should use the app wisely.

B. The app can create an accurate result.

C. Parents and babies are addicted to the app.

D. The app makes babies lose love and caring.

4.What is the text mainly about?

A. Parents should not rely too much on their smartphones.

B. A new app helps parents figure out why their babies are crying.

C. Parents can deal with babies’ hunger with the help of a new app.

D. A new app called ChatterBaby can prevent babies from crying.

It was hard to accept, but the sad day had finally arrived. I still remember the tears welling up in my six-year-old sister’s eyes as she looked around the empty closet in wonder. The space once filled with her clothes now held only loneliness and sorrow. This little child had come to the realization that her father was gone. He had left us, and there was simply no way to change it.

Being the oldest of four girls has never been easy, but with the departure of our father, our world and dreams were broken beyond repair. My mother, the most amazingly warm-hearted person in the world, has worked harder than anyone should simply to mend our broken household. However, long hours at work often prevented her from physically being there in our times of need. This is where I have stepped up as the temporary caretaker of my three small sisters.

Many students write college essays about their leadership positions in school and the community but I feel that my greatest accomplishment is the role I have played within my own family.

Senior year in high school is not simple for anyone, especially when it feels like the entire world is resting on your shoulders, but this is how I have felt for the past two years, I have continually tried to fulfill the dream my mother holds for my future. My mother was not able to complete her college education, and so this success is her top significance for her children.

A leader is defined as one who has influence on others. I hope that my leadership affects the lives of my sisters and everyone around me. In dedicating myself to my family and school, I have set goals that I will do anything to accomplish. I am an extremely determined individual, and my university will help me take the next step in climbing the ladder of success.

When big news breaks, it's easy to get caught up in following the story online. The Internet can be a place to find useful information. 1. Helping kids understand the news and how to separate fact from fiction is an important job for parents and educators.

Here's some advice that parents can offer kids to help them be quicker to judge as they consume news online.

2. In the rush to cover stories, reporters make mistakes, officials don't always have correct information and tidbits (八卦新闻) that sound reasonable often get passed around before anyone has checked them for accuracy.

Use social media wisely. Some say Twitter is a great source of news in the first few minutes of a tragedy. 3. On the other hand, Facebook can be a great way to connect with friends affected by events in the news and to spread personal news within a more limited circle.

Be skeptical. 4. After the Boston Marathon bombing, NBC Sports reported that some runners kept running all the way to the hospital to donate blood for the victims. Not true. There are plenty of websites devoted to exposing false news stories. The Washington Post also has a Fact Checker column that delivers claims made by public officials and politicians. Visit them to find out if a story is true.

Keep it age-appropriate. Kids aren't always ready to digest big, tragic news - especially if the news is about kids, such as school shootings or abuses.  The constant repetition of information can be confusing for younger kids, and at the beginning of a news event, parents might not be able to offer any correct answers. 5.

ARemember, breaking news is often wrong.

BIt also can be the source of misinformation.

CIf something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

DMake sure you and your kids aren't falling victim to false news.

EHowever, after that it just becomes messy and largely inaccurate.

FWith social media at your fingertips, it's convenient to express your opinion.

GKids who are eager to learn more about certain events can check kid-guided news sources.

Last week, Vodafone started a test of the UK's first full 5G service, available for use by businesses in Salford. It is part of its plan to trial the technology in seven UK cities. But what can we expect from the next generation of mobile technology?

One thing we will see in the preparation for the test is lots of tricks with the new tech. Earlier this year, operators paid almost £ 1.4 billion for the 5G wavelengths, and to compensate for that cash, they will need to catch the eye of consumers. In September, Vodafone used its bit of the range to display the UK's first hologram (全息) call. The Manchester City captain Steph Houghton appeared as a hologram in Newbury. It isn't all holograms, however: 5G will offer faster internet access, with Ofcom (英国通讯管理局) suggesting that video that takes a minute to download on 4G will be available in just a second.

The wider application is to support connected equipment on the "internet of things" -not just the internet-enabled fridge that can reorder your milk for you, but the network that will enable driverless cars and delivery drones (无人机) to communicate with each other.

Prof William Webb has warned that the technology could be a case of the emperor's new clothes. Much of the speed increase, he claims, could have been achieved by putting more money in the 4G network, rather than a new technology.  Other different voices have suggested that a focus on rolling out wider rural broadband access and addressing current network coverage would be more beneficial to the UK as a whole.

Obviously, 5G will also bring a cost to consumers. It requires a handset for both 5G and 4G, and the first 5G-enabled smart phones are expected in the coming year. With the slow pace of network rollout so far, it is likely that consumers will end up upgrading to a new 5 G phone well before 5 G becomes widely available in the next couple of years.

1.Why does Prof William Webb say "the technology could be a case of the emperor's new clothes" ?

A. He is in favor of the application of the new technology.

B. 5G will bring a cost to consumers in their daily life.

C. 5G helps people communicate better with each other.

D. He prefers more money to be spent on 4G networks.

2.The underlined word "addressing" in the fourth paragraph has the closest meaning to________

A. making a speech to

B. trying to solve

C. managing to decrease

D. responding to

3.The last paragraph indicates that

A. it'll take several years .to make 5G accessible to the public in the UK

B. 5G service shows huge development potential and a broad market

C. customers are eager to use 5G smart phones instead of 4G ones

D. it's probable that 5G network rollout is speeding up in Britain

4.What do we know about the text?

A. Vodafone is successful in spreading the 5G service.

B. Steph Houghton appeared as a hologram by 4G.

C. The application of 5G will make life much easier.

D. 5G phones are available in rural areas of the UK.

Back in 2009, China was wrongly accused by the West of "controlling" the Copenhagen talks on climate change. By then China had truly carried out strict policies to reduce the energy consumption of economic activities and at the international level, the top Chinese leaders participated in round-clock efforts to cooperate with the major players to build a united front for efforts to solve global warming. But China was finally misjudged.

This misjudgment caused China's scholars to rethink China's climate change communicative ways. Among them was Zheng Baowei, journalism professor of Renmin University of China, who realized China had to better shape its communication on its environmental protection.

Delightfully, the efforts have paid off. Zheng set up a top-level international group advising his research team. He is in charge of doctoral candidates on climate change communication. Climate awareness surveys have been conducted, and a package of communication tools has been designed. Many seminars have been arranged.

Recently, he arranged a seminar on climate change and health communication on the changing situation both in China and the world. First of all, this stressed that China's policy has developed from reducing its energy consumption and pollution prevention to the important goals of achieving a "Beautiful China" and "'Healthy China, "while coming up with plans to realize an ecological civilization since late 2012. With such goals, China played a leading role in securing the Paris climate change deal in 2015 together with the United States and European Union. In Paris, China promised to let out its carbon to the maximum in 2030.

It is a demanding job communicating climate change and other topics of lasting development well. Despite that, some foreign scholars have realized China's smart ways in presenting the green concepts. They appreciated China's idea of building a "Beautiful China" and "Healthy China" and said it can he expanded into an idea of a "Beautiful World" and "Healthy World".

Looking back from how China had followed the steps of the industrialized countries in advocating climate fight, people find now its own green ideas are being recognized.

1.What did the West think of the role China played in Copenhagen talks in 2009?

A. China worked successfully with other countries.

B. China succeeded in hosting the conferences.

C. China participated passively in all the talks.

D. China played a negative part in the talks.

2.How did China deal with the misjudgment?

A. China had to improve communicative ways with other countries.

B. China spared no effort to prevent air and water being polluted.

C. China made great efforts to protect the environment.

D. China intended to gain fair judgment from the world.

3.What is China's policy on climate change and health communication?

A. Reducing as much energy consumption as possible to control pollution.

B. Focusing more on realizing an ecological civilization in China.

C. Communicating climate change and some other topics well.

D. Reaching the goals of a "Beautiful China" and "Healthy China".

4.What makes China's green idea well received?

A. China making promises to let out its carbon to the maximum in 2030.

B. China reducing its energy consumption as well as pollution prevention.

C. China's idea being updated to that of a Beautiful World and Healthy World.

D. China following the steps of the industrialized countries fighting global warming.
