The National Civil Rights Museum

The National Civil Rights Museum is a word-renowned cultural attraction that draws thousands of visitors each year. This institution examines the civil rights struggles faced by both our city and our nation throughout the history.

The Lorraine Motel:

Today the National civil rights Museum is partially housed in the Lorraine Motel’s history, however is a short and sad one. It opened in 1925 and was originally a “white” establishment. By the end of World War II, however, the motel had become minority-owned. It was for this reason that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stayed at the Lorraine when he visited Memphis in 1968.Dr.King was assassinated on the balcony of his hotel room on April 4th of that year. Following his death, the motel struggled to remain in business. By 1982,the Lorraine Motel went into foreclosure(抵押品赎回权).

Saving the Lorraine:

With the future of the Lorraine Motel uncertain, a group of local citizens formed the Martin Luther King Memorial Foundation for the only purpose of saving the motel. The group raised money, solicited donations, took out a loan, and partnered Lucky Heart Cosmetics to purchase the motel for $144, 000 when it was up for auction. With the help of the city of Memphis, Shelby County, and the state of Tennessee, enough money was then raised to plan, design, and build what would eventually become the National Civil Rights Museum.

The Birth of the National Civil Rights Museum:

In 1987, construction began in a civil rights center housed within the Lorraine Motel. The center was intended to help its visitors better understand the events of the American Civil Rights Movement. In 1991,the museum opened its doors to the public. Ten years later, the ground was broken again for a multi-million-dollar expansion that would add 12,800 square feet space. The expansion would also connect the museum to the Young and Morrow Building and the Main Street Rooming House where James Earl Ray purportedly fired the shot that killed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Exhibits: The exhibits at the National Civil Rights Museum illustrate chapters of the fight for civil rights in our country in order to promote better understanding of the struggles involved. Included in the exhibits are photographs, newspaper accounts, and three-dimensional scenes depicting civil rights events such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the March on Washington, and the Lunch Counter Sit-Ins.

Dessi Sieburth's love of birds started about six years ago. Now, he has his own group called Protecting Our Birds.Recently,Dessi,14 years old, chatted with TFK about his work and goals for the future.

TFK:

What is Protecting Our Birds?

DESSI:

Birds are citizens of the world, so they need protection. I basically try to do conservation work to help birds get protected throughout the world. I recently wrote an article about a bird called the bartailed godwit(斑尾).I interviewed a biologist named Nils Warnock, who had studied the bartailed godwit. He expressed the concern about the threat that the bartailed godwit is facing. I wrote an article about his answers to the questions, which is published on the American Birding Association Website.

TFK:

What impelled you to start this project?

DESSI:

When I was eight years old, our class had to do a woodworking project, so I chose a bird feeder(喂食盒). I didn't like birds at the time. I made the feeder, filled it up with seed, put it in my backyard and then the birds started coming. I got really interested in birds as more came. I later got involved in my local Audubon Society, which is devoted to conserving and restoring natural ecosystems. It really got me into birds and I realized bird populations were declining, and many are becoming endangered quite rapidly. I wanted to help them, so I started the project.

TFK:

What are some future projects you plan to work on?

DESSI:

I live in L.A., where there are a lot of parrots. Most of the parrots' native range is in Mexico, but they’re really declining there because of habitat loss. I want to study the parrots and help them in their native range in Mexico, so they can start increasing again.

TFK:

How can people learn more about Protecting Our Birds and the work you're doing?

DESSI:

I have a website. It's my free website about protecting our birds. There people can learn about what I do and how to help birds.

1.What's Nils Warnock's attitude to the bartailed godwit?

A. Worried.    B. Changing.

C. Uncertain.    D. Optimistic.

2.When did Dessi start his project “Protecting Our Birds”?

A. After he prepared a feeder for birds.

B. After he interviewed Nils Warnock.

C. After he studied parrots in Mexico.

D. After he joined a local association.

3.What will Dessi probably do next?

A. Write articles about birds in danger.

B. Help parrots losing the natural home.

C. Set up a website to teach how to help birds.

D. Recreate his own conservation organization.

A woman was in a business trip. She stayed in a big and comfort hotel. But every day, she had lots of meetings to attend to, which made her very tiring. One Saturday afternoon, she decided to sunbathe to relax. So she went to the top of the hotel in her swimsuit and lay down on roof.

After about an hour of sunbathing, she heard someone come up to the roof. It is the manager of the hotel. He said, "Excuse me, Miss, but do you mind sunbathe somewhere else?" "Why?" the woman asked, "I'm on top of the hotel…Everybody can see me!" The man answered, "That's true, and you are lying on the window above the dining room. A new study has shown how computers and robots powered by artificial intelligence can read human eye movements to "read" human personalities.

The eyes, they say, are the windows to the soul. And if that is true, computers and robots powered by sophisticated(复杂的)artificial intelligence algorithms(算法)may soon have the ability to peer into your soul. That is the result of a new study on the connection between eye movements and personality, conducted by neuroscience researchers based at the University of South Australia and Published in the scientific Journal Frontiers in Neuroscience.

"Eye movements during an everyday task predict aspects of our personality," wrote the researchers, led by University of South Australia neuroscientist Tobias Loetscher, whose team follows 42 study subjects around the university campus recording their eye movements, then determines their personality traits(特点)with "well-established questionnaires" for determining personality type, according to a summary of the study published by the site Science Daily.

The researchers fed the data into their Al algorithms and found that computers running the algorithms were able to record human eye movements and immediately determine a person's major personality traits, such as "neuroticism, extraversion(外向),agreeableness, conscientiousness, as well as perceptual(感知的)curiosity", the scientists wrote.

"The new findings could improve the way human beings interact with their computers and other high-tech devices, even robots, allowing for more natural and realistic social interactions with machines," Loetscher said.

"People are always looking for improved, personalized services. Today's robots and computers are not socially aware so they cannot adapt to non-verbal information," Loetscher said in a statement quoted by Indian Express. This research provides opportunities to develop robots and computers so that they can become more natural, and better at interpreting human social signals."

The study revealed previously undiscovered relations between specific personality characteristics and specific eye movement tendencies, according to a summary in Britain's Daily Mail newspaper.

1.What do the underlined words "peer into" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

3.According to Tobias Loetscher, what can we know?

A. Robots and computers are socially conscious.

B. People care less about improved, personalized services.

C. Today's robots and computers can accustom to non-verbal information.

D. The discovery will improve the interaction between human beings and machines.

4.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Human Personality Traits

B. What Human Eye Movements Are

C. Tell Personalities by Eye Movements.

D. How Humans and Machines Interact

It's thought that around 5 trillion pieces of plastic are currently floating in our oceans.

Both mammals and fish benefit from clean oceans. It is reported that more than 8 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year, and nearly half of the plastic we produce is single-use only.

This shoe brand, however, is riding the wave of change and is on a mission to help clean up our waters and rid the sea of plastic bottles that can take up to 400 years to break down. Vivobarefoot's newest footwear uses recycled plastic materials and has created an education program that spreads awareness about how harmful plastic is for sea life.

Every pair of shoes is made up of 17 plastic water bottles taken from the ocean and turned into a sustainable, comfortable pair of shoes, which are also healthy for your feet. And while not everyone can take part in ocean cleanups, choosing little ways we can give back to our planet goes a long way.

Vivobarefoot's new products include a variety of high-performance styles such as casual sneakers, running shoes, and hiking boots. The brand hopes that its latest initiative(首创精神)will help lessen the indifference to pollution and how harmful it is for all living beings.

In the future, Vivobarefoot hopes to increase their production of shoes created from sustainable materials, and thankfully, they are now one of many brands that aim to increase environmentalism and educate communities on how global warming affects everyone.

This year, they'll add more recyclable and traceable materials into more than half of their production line, and they have plenty of creative developments in the works as well.

The shoes also have a health benefit. Based on the concept that wider, minimally designed shoes enable our foot to function at maximum potential, wearers also experience better balance and sensory input.

A. Donating money to buy food for them.

B. Keeping the oceans free from plastic bottles.

C. Producing more shoes from sustainable materials.

D. Raising public awareness of recycling and reuse.

A. Customer-focused.    B. Service-oriented

C. Money-saving.    D. Environmentally-friendly.

4.Which of the following is True according to the text?

A. Vivobarefoot's new products haven't been released.

When I was three years old, I couldn't speak. It was a strange reality that none of the doctors I visited could understand.

One day, I was shadowing(跟随)my mother. She found herself looking in a mirror, and through it our eyes met. She began to speak to me through the reflection, and I slowly began to mimic(模仿)her mouth's movements until I formed a word.

It turned out I'm deaf in my left ear, and have a slight problem in my right. Being hard of hearing has been difficult, but I've never lived in a state of self-hating sorrow. Imagine being able to shut out all sound as you lay your head down to sleep by simply rolling over onto one side. That's my reality when I sleep on my "good ear", and it makes me feel like a superhero sometimes.

People call my deaf side my "bad ear", but when I wear my hearing aid, I have access to a range of features that some other deaf people don't. In cinemas, for example, with one click of a button I can enjoy a whole film as though it were whispered to me from the mouths of the actors.

Owning a hearing aid hasn't always felt good, however. On the first day I got my aid, when I was eight, I took it to school for show-and-tell. As I explained how it worked to my classmates, a boy yelled out, "Aren't those for old men?" At that moment, I felt different. It took a long time for me to get over that sense of being so unlike my peers.

But it's not just school kids who can make us deaf and hard-of-hearing people feel like burdens. Every video on social media that lacks subtitles(字幕), for example, means an entire community of deaf people is unable to enjoy it. Completely deaf people are excluded from enjoying many movies too, as subtitles in cinemas are almost impossible to find.

And with hearing aids costing around $2,500 each, it can be hard for many people to afford to be able to listen to the things that others take for granted. As for me, I can listen to music, enjoy films, and catch conversations - I'm lucky. I'm deaf, but I can still hear everything. I've been blessed with wonderful life experiences, and I am human. And when it comes to sleeping, I'm even superhuman.

1.How does the author view his hearing difficulty?

A. It's a disaster and causes him a lot of trouble.

B. It gave him a chance to experience something special.

C. It made him feel embarrassed in front of his classmates.

D. It helped him to live in his own world without being interrupted.

2.What can be inferred from the passage about the author?

A. He was born deaf.

B. He is optimistic and helpful.

C. His family and classmates have supported him a lot.

D. The hearing aid brings much convenience to his daily life.

3.What is the author's attitude toward his life?

A. grateful.    B. anxious.

C. excited.    D. disappointed.

4.What is the author's main purpose in writing the article?

A. To give advice on life to disabled people.

B. To show how difficult life is for disabled people.

C. To share his experience of treating a disadvantage with gratitude.

D. To show the convenience a hearing aid could bring.

The cost of living in countries like the U.S., Britain, Australia or France has skyrocketed in recent years. Now Jim and we play together, chat with each other and go out picnics. Also, we ride bikes in the country or go hike in the mountains. Sometimes we play game on the playground. Jim likes it here and often says it is like being at home, but that is what we wish.

The global figures reveal that even the Americans put Britain to shame when it comes to taking exercise. Britain has one of the most sedentary populations on the earth, with almost twice the proportion of people defined as “inactive” as in neighboring France. In the UK, 63.3 percent of the population fails to meet recommended levels of physical activity, increasing their risk of conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. By contrast, 40.5 percent of US citizens are inactive, despite more than 30 percent of them being obese.

Now, there’s good news. Smart foods that tell the brain you have eaten enough could hold the key to beating obesity, researchers have claimed. They hope the foods will contain a special chemical which mimics (模仿) the message our gut (肠道) sends to the brain when it is full. By sending the message earlier, the brain can be fooled into not overeating. “We know nutrients interact with gut cells, which send chemical messengers——hormones —— to the brain to signal ‘stomach full’,” Dr. Jens Holst said.

This message from our food to gut to brain is now being used to fight obesity. Holst discovered GLP1, which acts on parts of the brain that regulate appetite. “There is a raft of hormones, which will tend to help end a meal,” said Dr. Holst. “We don’t know much about which nutrients are involved and whether we can handle how food interacts with those signaling systems and how those systems are integrated(整合) at different levels in the brain.”

The team hopes their research could lead to drugs which mimic the message, and hopes to eventually make food that can also contain the messages. “It would be even better if we could come up with smart foods,” said Holst.

1.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “sedentary” in Paragraph 1?

A. Proud.    B. Inactive.

C. Silent.    D. Energetic.

2.What message could smart foods probably tell the brain?

A. Which food tastes good.

B. When to stop eating.

C. How to get enough nutrition.

D. How to live a healthy life.

3.What can we learn from the passage?

A. Smart foods still have a long way to go.

B. Dr. Holst doesn’t think highly of smart foods.

C. There will be more and more overweight people.

D. It’s fashionable to stay slim at present.

Daydreaming was viewed as a waste of time. Or it was considered an unhealthy escape from real life and its duties. Daydreaming has always had a bad reputation, but now scientific research has showed that daydreaming may actually improve your mental health and creativity. It can even help you achieve your desired goals.

Now some people are taking a fresh look at daydreaming. Some think it may be a very healthy thing to do. Researchers are finding daydreaming, they tell us, is a good means of relaxation. But its benefits go beyond this. A number of psychologists have conducted experiments and have reached some surprising conclusions.

Dr. Joan T. Freyberg has concluded that daydreaming contributes to intellectual growth. It also improves concentration, attention span, and the ability to get along with others, she says. In an experiment with school children, the same researcher found that daydreaming led the children to pay more attention to details. They had more happy feelings. They worked together better. Another researcher reported that daydreaming seemed to produce improved selfcontrol and creative abilities.

But that’s only part of the story. The most remarkable thing about daydreaming may be its usefulness in shaping our future lives as we want them to be. Industrialist Henry J. Kaiser believed that much of his success was due to the positive use of daydreaming. He maintained that “you can imagine your future”. Florence Nightingale dreamed of becoming a nurse. The young Thomas Edison pictured himself as an inventor. For these famous achievers, it appears that their daydreams came true.

Of course daydreaming is no substitute(代替者) for hard work. You have to work hard to develop skills. Daydreaming alone can’t turn you into your heart’s desire. But in combination with the more usual methods of selfdevelopment, it might make a critical difference. And who knows: You might see your own daydreams come true.

1.From the scientific research, a few minutes’ daydreaming will ________.

A. relieve stress effectively

4.Nightingale and Edison are examples to explain that daydreaming probably ________.

A. earns a good reputation

B. takes the place of hard work

You probably have heard of comic book heroes like Superman, Batman and Spiderman. But what about Tom, the motorbike shop owner, Joe Knight and Karen Berman?

Tom, Joe and Karen are all characters in a comic book. But Mr. Knight and Ms. Berman are real people. In 2006, they wrote a book called Financial Intelligence —— a manager’s guide to knowing what the numbers really mean. It was written for people who need to learn quickly about finance (财政). The book explains, in simple ways, oftencomplex methods of keeping financial information. It became a bestseller.

Recently a comic book, which provides the same information as Financial Intelligence in easytounderstand picture form, is published by Smarter Comics. This book consists of a textbook and a graphic(插画的) novel. It tells the story of Tom, a repairman who must quickly learn how to direct the motorbike repair shop his father founded. Tom has no experience with finance, and is struggling with the business. Joe Knight and Karen Berman help him. Artist Dave Wachter drew pictures for the comic book.

Franco Arda, the founder and head of Smarter Comics, formerly worked as an investment banker. He started the company almost three years ago with his own money. He wanted to create educational comics that increase understanding. “I think almost everybody understands the phrase ‘a picture says a thousand words’, so, I mean, probably 90 percent of us grew up with comics and they understand that comics help us to learn a concept much quicker than text alone,” he said. “Within an hour, you can get the idea of finance with this book very quickly and not in a boring way. Once you get these pictures, you get the basic knowledge of finance.”

“The new comic book is available in paperback(平装本). There will also be versions for iPad and iPhone users,” he added.

It’s hard to talk to Dad sometimes. His silence about his feelings and thoughts made him mysterious and hard to see through. You could never break his hard shell and get to know him. And he seemed to want to stay that way too.

But a year ago when my relationship with my wife and career took a hit, I needed my dad to pull back the curtain so I could see him as real and accessible. I was facing serious problems, and I wanted to know whether he had faced them before and how he had found his way, because I felt like I had lost mine. In desperation, it occurred to me that sending an email might be the key, so I wrote him one, telling him about my regrets and fears, and I asked him to answer, if he felt like it.

Two weeks later, it showed up in my inbox: a muchthought, threepage letter. Dad, a 68yearold retired technologist and grandfather of four, had carefully considered my message, and crafted a response. He mentioned his lost love, the foolish mistake he made in career and the stupid pride he had between him and his parents. He comforted me that “life will still find its right track despite many of its twists and turns”.

I closed the email and started to cry, because I wished I had opened it up earlier but was grateful it wasn’t too late. I cried because at first, in the midst of my own struggles, his letter instantly put me at ease. And I cried because in the end, it was so simple: I just had to hit “Send”.

We’ve since had many email exchanges. This increasing communication opened a door into his world. My problems haven’t been magically solved, but getting to know my dad better has made the tough stuff more manageable and life sweeter. It’s hard to talk to Dad sometimes, but I’m glad I found a way to talk to mine.

When high school student Katie Shipley was born with a serious brain disease, doctors said she wouldn't live to go to school.

Now, Katie is not only about to graduate from Southridge High School in Oregon, but she was also named the school's prom (高中毕业舞会) queen.

Knowing Katie's wishes for prom queen, her friend Courtney Travis began reaching out to find her the prom king she needed to make her a queen. Courtney found Michael Parks, who also thought it was a great idea.

Sharon, Aged 22

The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself. Besides, I don't know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care about things such as how much homework you already have in one night. It's best to just learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need to.

Frank, Aged 21

I think almost every kid feels both nervous and excited before their first day. You will probably love it. I know I did. You should join some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!

Eddie, Aged 20

When I started high school, I was really nervous too, especially since I had been homeschooled all through middle school and didn't really know anyone. I suppose the best advice would be to just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier before you know it.

David, Aged 19

I'm not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening (令人恐惧的). But you'll get used to it. Don't be afraid of anyone; upperclassmen will pick on you more if you let them know you're afraid. Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week, it's really not bad at all. Don't worry.

1.What can we infer from Sharon about high school?

A. Teachers are quite strict.

B. Students often stay up at night.

3.Who mentions the importance of friends?

Hunger insects kill crops in the fields. Farmers spray as to get rid of these insects. Does this means that all insects are harmful? No, many are of great helpful to man. Bees make honey. With bees and other insects, many trees would have not fruit. Silkworms make silk. Some insects eat other insects that kill fruit trees.
