Don't desire to walk when you have wings to fly

Once upon a time, there lived a generous and kind-hearted king. He was fond of birds and animals, and had a huge bird shelter in his kingdom. He disliked harming the animals and birds. He did not kill them even for meat.

In order to thank his generosity and kindness towards birds, the king was gifted two beautiful falcons(猎鹰)by a businessman. Those two falcons were used to different climatic conditions. The king thanked the businessman and ordered the head bird trainer to provide all the facilities to those beautiful falcons and make them feel comfortable in their country. The head trainer took care of the birds. Gradually, the birds got adapted to the country's climate.

One day, the king wanted to see the falcons fly as he had heard that one of those falcons could fly to great heights at very high speed. The bird trainer let the falcon out of the enclosure(围场). It flew very high, very quickly, and came down to the enclosure within minutes.

The king was quite surprised, and rewarded the bird trainer with a handful of gold coins. He asked about the other falcon. The bird trainer stated with regret that the other falcon had not moved even a step from day one and had just sat on the branch. The trainer also added that he had tried everything he could but still failed to make the bird move.

The king comforted him and told him that he would bring someone more experienced than him to try to train the other falcon.

Paragraph 1

Soon, the king announced that he needed someone to make the falcon move and fly.

Don't be too concerned about money, because all it will do is distract you from achieving happiness. And the irony is that people think they will be happy when they have money. 1.. If you are happy and you have money, you can use it for happiness. If you are unhappy and you have money, you will use that money for more unhappiness. Because money is simply a neutral force.

Don't misunderstand me: 2.. I am not against anything. Money is a means. Your money will enhance your pattern, whatever it is good or bad.

3.. They are ready, at any moment, to change their pattern, to change their ways, if more money is available somewhere else.

Once the money is there, then suddenly you are no longer yourself; you are ready to change.

This is the way of the worldly man. Remember, I don't call a person worldly because he or she has money. 4.. This applies to people with no money as well-they may simply be poor. Just being poor does not equal to being spiritual; and just being rich does not equal to being a materialist. The materialistic pattern of life is one in which money predominates over everything.

The non-materialistic life is one in which money is just a means: happiness predominates, joy predominates, your own individuality predominates. 5., and you are not distracted.

Then suddenly you will see your life has a meaningful quality to it.

A.I am not against money.

B.However, money has nothing to do with happiness

C.So they attach great importance to money

D.You know who you are and where you are going

E.Money brings great joy to people who pursue it

F.I call them worldly if they change their motives for money

G.But people keep looking for money as if money is going to bring happiness

The United States space agency will send a spacecraft to explore the sun more closely than ever before on Saturday. NASA'S Parker Solar Probe(探测器)will fly through the hot solar atmosphere and come within just 6 million kilometers of the sun's surface.

The Parker Probe will get almost seven times closer to the sun than earlier spacecraft. To do this, it will fly past Venus(金星)seven times over seven years. Each pass will change the probe's orbit by providing a gravity push. It will move ever closer to the sun and straight into the corona(日冕), the sun's outermost atmosphere.

By exploring the sun's corona, scientists hope to learn why it is hundreds of times hotter than the sun's surface. They will also study what drives the solar wind.

The project was proposed in 1958, the same year NASA was established. Now, "it's becoming a reality," said project manager Andy Driesman.

The Parker spacecraft has a 2.4 meter heat shield(护罩)that is 11 centimeters thick. It is made of two carbon sheets. The front has a white coating to reflect sunlight. It is expected to shine red when it experiences the extreme solar heat. Almost everything on the spacecraft will be behind this shield to keep its scientific instruments relatively cool.

Besides, the spacecraft will also be traveling at a high speed. The probe will reach 690,000 kilometers per hour in the corona. The spacecraft will make its first flight past Venus in early October. Its first pass by the sun is expected in November.

The Parker Solar Probe is the first NASA spacecraft to be named after someone who is still alive. Eugene Parker is a 91-year-old professor at the University of Chicago. He predicted the existence of solar wind 60 years ago. He plans to be at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in the southern state of Florida to see the launch.

1.What's the advantage of the Parker Probe compared to the earlier ones?

A.It can change the orbit by flying past the sun.

B.It can get closer to the sun and into the corona.

C.It can study the effect of solar wind.

D.It can fly through the hot solar atmosphere without protection.

2.What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Human had little achievements in exploring the sun.

B.Eugene Parker is the first one to study the sun.

C.The Parker Probe has to get close to the sun with the help of Venus.

D.Human can get close to the sun's surface within 6 million kilometers today.

3.What can we learn about Eugene Parker?

A.He started NASA.

B.He foresaw the solar wind when he was 31.

C.He designed the Parker spacecraft.

D.He will study the sun using the Parker spacecraft.

4.Judging from the content, the passage most probably belongs to       .

I am Ewald. I' m not someone who has many secrets, because I' m a terrible liar. But there is one huge secret that I kept for years-I failed my driving test. I had never failed a test before, and had never even come close. Driving made me anxious, but my parents told me I had to. They signed me up for driving lessons. I had gotten a perfect score for my written permit exam, but getting behind the wheel was a different story.

But when October 30th rolled around, my pride set in. I wanted to be like everyone else at my school, showing off the brand new license they'd gotten. Looking back on that special day, I can't remember if I was nervous. What I do remember is starting the test, pausing at a stop sign after a few seconds, and being asked by the instructor to pull over. I had received an auto-fail since my pause was indeed a pause and not a real stop. I wasn't upset that I was leaving without a license, but I was scared everyone would know that I had failed. So when I got to class, I told everyone I didn't want to take the test on my birthday.

One Friday a month later, I went to the test spot again and passed. Later that night I drove for the first time by myself, which brought to me an amazing feeling I've never experienced-but sill, I couldn't imagine ever telling anyone the truth. So I didn't. It wasn't until midway through college that I came clean. It turned out plenty of my college friends had failed too! And I gathered enough courage to speak the fact out. Yes, I had also failed.

Now I realize failure and imperfection are two things everyone has to experience, without which one couldn't make a true man.

1.What can we learn about Ewald?

A.He relied heavily on his parents.

B.He was a slow learner of driving.

C.He was afraid of taking exams.

D.He was bored with telling lies.

2.Why did the instructor ask Ewald to pull over?

A.To give him a second chance.

B.To check his parking skills.

C.To put an end to his test.

D.To show him a better way of driving.

3.What made Ewald feel extremely worried after his first attempt?

A.Losing face before his classmates.

B.Missing his birthday celebration.

C.Making his parents disappointed.

D.Failing to get a driving license.

4.What did Ewald learn from his own experience?

A.Honesty is the best policy.

B.Truth stands the test of time.

C.Failure is a way to grow up.

D.Imperfection is another form of perfection.

The book I’m reading of talks about the afternoon tea in Britain. According to the book, it is called the afternoon tea today starts in the early 1800’s. Having tea in the later afternoon provided a bridge between lunch and dinner, which might not being served until 8 o’clock in the evening. Interestingly, the afternoon tea customs soon led to a rapid grow in the porcelain industry.

Tea in China was traditionally drank from cups without handles. When tea became popularity in Britain, there was a crying need for the porcelain industry to produce cups with handles to suit new need.

Shopping therapy (疗 法)is the practice of using the shopping experience to help overcome depression or other emotional problems. 1. Actually, it really works.

2. One of the most obvious things is the enjoyment people get from the items they buy. When people shop, they often buy things they really care about on some level. For example, when people come home with a new shirt or a new computer, they assume that the item is going to improve their lives in some way. This can help reduce many feelings of unhappiness.

3. Some experts think humans are linked with the need to constantly achieve and fight for improvement. People make a decision to buy something, and then actually follow through this plan. This is one way people can take action to directly change their own lives for the better.

People who don't actually have any money to buy things still benefit from shopping therapy. For them, simply browsing (浏览)can be a nice experience. That's because it helps them form future shopping plans. 4.

The simple act of leaving home and spending time around other humans is another possible reason for the effectiveness of shopping therapy. 5. Many people even use shopping as a specific social activity by bringing friends along with them and turning the process into a pleasant one.

A.So why not shop until you start feeling better?

B.So how do people benefit from shopping therapy?

C.These plans offer great expectation and hope in their life.

D.Many people shop for this reason without even realizing it.

E.People can have the feeling of achievement after shopping.

F.Many people have gone into debt due to shopping addiction.

G.There is sometimes a sense of community in the shopping experience.

You may think that creativity and artistic judgment are what sets humans apart from artificial intelligence (AI). Robots will be washing our windows long before they start creating masterpieces Right?

Not necessarily. At Amper Music (www.ampermusic.com), you can make the music you want based on mood, instrument, speed and length. You click “Render,” and boom! There’s your original piece, not only composed (作曲) but also “performed” and “mixed” by AI software.

But something has kept bothering me: What happens in a world where effort and scarcity (稀缺) are no longer part of the definition of art? A mass-produced print of the Mona Lisa is worth less than the actual Leonardo painting. Why? Scarcity—there’s only one of the original. But Amper turns. professional-quality original piece of music every time you click “Render.” It puts us in a strange world where works of art are unique but require almost zero human effort to produce. Should anyone pay for these things? And if an artist puts AI masterpieces up for sale, what should the price be?

That’s not just a thought experiment either. Soon the question “What’s the value of AI artwork and music?” will start impacting flesh—and—blood consumers. It has already, in fact.

Earlier, reporters discovered something suspicious (可疑的) about many playlists of Spotify—another online music service. According to the report, the composers and bands who wrote the songs appeared to be nonexistent. These playlists have names like Peaceful Piano and Ambient Chill—exactly the kind of music AI software is good at.

Is Spotify using software to compose music to avoid paying fees to human musicians? The New York Times reported that the tracks with false names have been played 500 million times, which would ordinarily have cost Spotify $3 million in payments.

But Spotify has firmly denied that the tracks in question were created by “fake” artists to avoid payments: while posted under pennames, they were written by actual people receiving actual money for work that they own. But the broader issue remains. Why couldn’t Spotify, or any music service, start using AI to produce free music to save itself money? Automation (自动化) is beginning to replace millions of human taxi drivers, truck drivers and fast-food workers. Why should artists and musicians be an exception to the same economics?

Should there be anything in place—a union, a law---to stop that from happening? Or will we always value human-produced art and music more than machine-made stuff? Once we’ve answered those questions, we can settle the really big one: When an AI—composed song wins the Grammy, who will be awarded?

1.What do we know from the example of Amper Music?

A.It doesn’t need any human effort to compose music.

B.It allows ordinary people to perform their own music.

C.It makes a challenge to the traditional definition of art.

D.It produces music works that are similar in styles.

2.The underlined part in Paragraph 4 implies that ________.

A.it is hard to tell AI artworks apart from human artworks

B.people will be charged for AI art in the near future

C.people don’t know what price of AI art is reasonable

D.the scarcity of AI artworks means it is one of a copy

3.Spotify was covered in the media because ________.

A.AI music can be performed free of charge

B.its musicians might not be paid fairly

C.playlists of its music did not actually exist

D.AI software has replaced human musicians

4.The writing purpose of this passage is to ________.

A.draw deserved attention to AI-made artworks

B.warn against the immediate threat from Al art

C.support the use of Al software in art creation

D.solve misunderstandings about AI’s role in art

Imagine that you’re the creator and show runner of the newest comedy show on television. Only it isn’t so popular yet, and your live Studio audience isn’t giving you the big laughs the show deserves. Do you film the show all over again, hoping that this time the audience will laugh? Or is there another option for making a joke sound funnier than it was received?

Sweeten(改善) the sound by adding a laugh track! “Sweetening,” or the addition of sound effects such as laughs, screams, and other audience-produced noises to the audio track of a TV show, has been used since the 1940s to produce the appearance, or rather the sound, of an engaged and entertained response to a show’s comedy. Laugh tracks came into existence as not only a solution, and sometimes replacement, for an unengaged live audience but also as a way to engage an at-home audience into a more-traditional, public, and theaterlike experience. Adding a laugh track to a television show makes the viewers at home feel much less like they’re sitting on a couch staring at the television screen and much more like they’re in a room full of laughing happy people to varying degrees of success.

Though the art of sweetening has risen and fallen in popularity over the past 60 years, credit for its creation and continued use is owed to laugh-track pioneer and sound engineer Charles Douglass. Douglass was the first to develop, in 1953, a machine for producing “canned laughter”, accessible at the push of a button or pull of a lever (操纵杆). Despite being artificial, sensibly edited laugh tracks are found by television studios to bring about a positive audience response, as their use is usually accompanied by higher ratings and increased audience memory. Though some television audiences may disagree with the value of the laugh track, the cheerful and repetitive sound holds a permanent place in the history and future of television comedy.

1.The author uses the first paragraph to         .

A.introduce the topic “sweetening”

B.seek solutions for the problem

C.point out a way of making comedies

D.arouse readers’ interest in comedies

2.What effect does a laugh track produce?

A.The creation of a show.

B.Funnier sound in a show,

C.More engaged live audience

The 3D-printing industry is accelerating its efforts to help fight the new coronavirus and the disease it causes, COVID-19.

On Tuesday, HP announced it’s working with those who bought its 3D printers to make medical face shields, hands-free door openers and an adjuster for face masks for medical staff who often must wear them for hours. It’s also testing “hospital-grade” face masks meeting the higher-end FFP3 (过滤式面罩) standard and parts for simple emergency ventilators (呼吸机) and it’s looking into nasal swabs to test for COVID-19 infection. HP also is offering free downloads of its 3D-printed medical equipment designs.

Carbon, whose 3D printers are used to make everything from bicycle seats to teeth straighteners, said it plans to send face shield designs to its network of customers who’ve bought its 3D printers. Carbon co-founder and Executive Chairman Joseph DeSimone said on Monday the company expects to send the designs by early Tuesday.

3D-printcr makers typically sell their products to others that actually do the 3D printing. One such customer, Ford, said Tuesday that it’s made 1,000 face shields and shipped them to Michigan hospitals, with plans to make 100,000 face shields a week. It is also working with 3M and General Electric on respirator masks and ventilator designs.

The effort is one of several to apply 3D-printing technology to the fight against coronavirus. 3D printing isn’t as fast at churning out products as conventional mass production methods. But 3D printers are flexible and able to make many different parts anywhere there’s a printer and raw materials like the plastic resins Carbon printers use.

Some 3D-printing efforts have focused on ventilators, which expected to be in short supply with a surge of COVID-19 patients suffering from respiratory (呼吸器官) problems. Also in short supply arc N95 masks that can be useful in reducing the likelihood a wearer will spread COVID-19 to others.

Carbon’s DeSimone is cautious about the enthusiasm, though, saying that regulatory approval is important and that 3D-printcr enthusiasts shouldn’t be making components not intended for close human contact that might release unhealthy gases.

1.What is the passage mainly about?

A.An introduction about 3D-printing.

B.The 3D-printing industry’s efforts to help fight COVID-19.

C.The products that 3D-printing makers sell.

D.How 3D-printing makers produce medical equipment.

2.HP announced to help its customers to make the following products except for_____________.

A.medical face shields B.hands-free door openers

C.an adjuster for face masks D.emergency ventilators

3.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.Carbon’s company will finish its design after Tuesday.

B.Ford has made 1,000 face shields end plans to make 10,000 more in a week.

C.3D printers are more flexible than traditional mass production methods.

D.Most 3D-printings focus on making ventilators and N95 because of their short supply.

4.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.3D-printing may release unhealthy gases.

B.DeSimone is cautious about 3D-printing.

C.Carbon’s company didn’t gain regulatory approval of making medical equipment.

D.3D printers aren’t enthusiastic about making components designed for close human contact.

[1] Every few weeks, Lu Jinhua's family met for dinner at a restaurant close to her home in Beijing. But the happy mealtime almost always ended with an unhappy scene: her children would insist that Lu leave the table before she embarrassed them by asking to take the leftover food home in takeaway bags.

[2]But on Sunday, the 63-year-old lady was, delighted to discover that the restaurant had made a number of changes. A poster on the table clearly stated, "Save food, don't waste it". Instead of persuading customers to order expensive dishes, the waitress suggested a small order that could be added later if people were still hungry. At the end of the dinner, Lu's daughter even volunteered to____.

[3] "This is the happiest dinner I had in that restaurant so far, and I am so glad to see these changes." Lu said.

[4]A campaign against food wastage is sweeping China, a country where 128 million people live below the poverty line. Every year, food valued at 200 billion yuan $32 billion is thrown away in China. The volume is equivalent to the amount consumed by more than 200 million people during a 12-month period.

[5]A proposal opposing waste in January is part of a drive by China's new leaders. Many provinces have launched their own more-detailed versions. Henan province has ordered that business meals should have no more than four dishes, and alcohol is prohibited. Guizhou has set a time limit of 45 minutes on meals paid for by the public purse.

[6] The public has also adopted the idea. Many restaurants discourage customers from ordering more than they can eat. Taking leftovers home is encouraged. Some of them have started to use smaller plates and the prices are cheaper. A proposal on the Internet calling on people to eat everything on their plate attracted the participation of 2.74 million people within the first two weeks.

Electrical devices(仪器)could soon use power made by human energy. Scientists say they have developed an experimental device that produces electricity from the physical movement of a person walking , British scientist Max Donelan and other scientists in Canada and the United States developed the device.

The device connects to a person’s knee. As the person walks ,the device captures energy each time the person slows down. To do this ,the device helps with the slowing sown movement of the leg, the movements of the walking person push parts of a small machine that produces electricity. Using the device, an adult walking quickly could produce thirteen watts of electricity in just a minute. Donelan says walking at that speed could produce enough power to operate a laptop computer for six minutes.

There are several possible uses for the device. Developers say it could help people who work in areas without electricity to operate small computers. The device could also he used in hospitals to operate heart pacemakers(起博器), it could even be used to assist in the movement of robotic arms and legs.

The experimental version of the device weighs about one and a half kilograms, but it is too costly for most people to buy, but the researchers hope to make a lighter, less costly version, An improved version should be ready in one year.

The developers hope the device will one day help developing countries; nearly twenty five percent of people around the world live without electric power.

A similar product was invented in 2005 by Larry Rome of the University of Pennsylvania, He created a bag carried on a person’s back that also produces power from walking. The knee device does not produce as much electricity as the bag, but the bag requires the walker to carry a load of twenty to thirty kilograms.

A.It is too heavy for the walker to bear

B.It is too complex for people to use

C.It is too expensive for most people to afford

D.It will slow down one’s walking speed

3.Compared with the device designed by Larry Rome, this new device

A.produces power without adding more loads to the walker

B.can produce more power in a much shorter time

C.needs to be equipped with a battery

D.can help the walker walk faster

4.From the passage, we can learn that the electrical device can

A.help housewives operate the washing machine

B.make it much easier for us to go online

C.produce more electricity than that invented by Larry Rome

D.be applied in medical fields to operate heart pacemakers

5.What would be the best title for the passage

C.Device gives new meaning to the idea of power walking

D.Human energy will become a main source of electricity

It was blazing hot, just like most July days. I stepped into a tiny ice-cream shop to cool off with a chocolate ice-cream. It was an old woman bent over a table near the door. Her back was so badly twisted that her face nearly touched the tabletop. I sat down facing her a couple of tables away.

“Poor woman,” I thought, “What does she get out of life? Why God let people live so long past their prime?”

As I thought, another aged lady entered the shop and sat down with her. Soon the two of them were talking about childhood days. They talked of how little the shop had changed in 70 years. In minutes, the two of them were trembling with laughter.

I looked again at the first woman, then in the mirror on a nearby wall, catching a picture of myself. I was wearing a dirty shirt. She was well dressed in white, her hands sparking with gold rings. I was sad. She was laughing, smiling. I was putting the pieces of my life together. She had millions of wonderful memories to recall. I sat alone. She was sharing the day with a good friend. I was secretly worried about getting old. She was old, but it wasn’t hurting her.

As I left the shop, I thought of my foolish question about God letting people live past their prime. Why, that woman was more alive, more sensitive to life than I was. Age has not bent her spirit.

A.miserable life B.time of great strength, beauty, vigor(活力)

C.long career D.wonderful experience

3.The writer implies all of the following except that _________.

A.the old lady was very lonely and sad

B.the writer had more problems than the old lady

C.the old lady had lived a full and satisfying life

D.the old lady had learned to enjoy the simple things in life

4.Which of the following is the conclusion the writer made about the old lady?

A.She was to be pitied for her old age.

B.She considered the young man pitiable.

C.She was more alive and sensitive to life than the writer.

D.People should not be allowed to live when they are too old.

5.Which of the following is the main idea of the passage?

A.To tell us the life of old people

B.To show that old age does not mean being short of spirit.

C.To show the difference between the old and the young.

D.To make the reader have a pity on the old people.

One night recently, I was driving down a two-lane highway at about 60 miles an hour. A car approached from the opposite direction at about the same speed. As we passed each other, I caught the other driver’s eye for only a second. I wondered whether he might be thinking, as I was, how dependent we were on each other at that moment. I was relying on him not to fall asleep, not to be put off by a phone conversation, not to cross over into my lane and bring my life to a sudden end. Though we had never spoken a word to each other, he relied on me in just the same way.

Multiplied a million times over, I believe that is the way the world works. At some level, we all depend upon one another. Sometimes that dependence requires us simply not to do something like crossing over the double yellow line. And sometimes it requires us to act cooperatively, with friends or even with strangers.

As technology shrinks our world, the need increases for cooperative action among nations. In 2003, doctors in five nations were quickly organized to identify the SARS virus, which saved thousands of lives. The threat of international terrorism has shown itself to be a similar problem, one requiring coordinated action by police and intelligence forces across the world. We must recognize that our fates (命运) are not ours alone to control .

In my own life, I’ve put great stock in personal responsibility. But, as the years have passed, I’ve also come to believe that there are moments when one must rely upon the good faith and judgment of others. So, while each of us faces the case of driving alone down a dark road , what we must learn is that the approaching light may not be a threat , but a shared moment of trust.

1.The author considers ________ very important.

A.driving alone on a dark road B.shared trust and cooperation

C.cooperation to identify SARS virus D.independence of people

2.The author said that they depended on each other in the same way because ________.

A.the approaching car was very dangerous

B.they both drove their car at a terrific speed

C.it was dark and the road was not wide enough

D.he might be killed out of the other’s careless driving

3.From the second paragraph, we know the author drew the important lesson from ________.

A.only one experience B.many friends and strangers

C.a driver on a dark road D.many similar experiences

4.The need for cooperation increases because _________.

A.terrorism can happen everywhere

B.the SARS virus spread quickly

C.peoples’ fates can’t be controlled by themselves

D.the world has become smaller

5.We can infer from the last paragraph that the author has ________.

A.had a change on his viewpoint of life

B.counted upon himself alone in everything

C.had no trust in others’ good faith and judgment

D.believed in one’s own personal responsibility

Mountains of smoke and fire

Deep under the Earth’s surface, it’s so hot that even rock melts. Sometimes this molten rock, called “magma”, is pushed up to the surface.1.And the opening or vent that lets the lava out is a volcano.

A volcano may explode violently, throwing out rocks for miles around.2.Some volcanoes release clouds of poisonous gas or huge clouds of ash. Volcanoes can even do all these things underwater.

Most volcanoes have been around for a very long time. Many haven’t erupted for years and have cooled off. Volcanoes that are not going to erupt again are called “dead volcanoes”. Some volcanoes still give off smoke. These “sleeping volcanoes” may “wake up” one day and erupt again. 3. But one day in AD 79 it suddenly woke up. Its eruption threw out hot ash and rocky fragments (碎片) that buried the city of Pompeii. A hot mud-flow buried nearby Herculaneum. Because the remains are so well preserved, the area has been named a World Heritage site.

But not all volcanoes are destructive. When a volcano throws out vast amounts of lava and debris (岩屑), it piles up into a mountain.4.

Other volcanoes help provide heat and energy. Many Icelandic homes get their hot water from springs heated by volcanic steam.5. Plants grow very well in the rich soil left by volcanoes. And valuable gems, such as diamonds, can sometimes be found in the rocks that are thrown out by volcanoes.

A.At this point it is referred to as “lava”.

B.The molten rock is formed inside the Earth.

C.This steam can also be used to produce electricity.

D.Mount Vesuvius in Italy slept for a thousand years.

E.Or it may push lava out so that it flows away, cools and hardens.

F.Japan has many active volcanoes within its narrow national territory.

G.The Hawaiian Islands and the island of Iceland were created in this way.

Most of us likely consider snakes to be cold to others of their kind, just as they are cold to us human beings.

But those beliefs are wrong-especially when it comes to garter snakes (袜带蛇) , a new study says. These nonpoisonous creatures, which range from the chilly plains of Canada to the forests of Costa Rica, have special preferences about which snakes they hang out with-in other words, they have “friends.”

“All animals-even snake-need to interact with others,” says study leader Morgan Skinner, a doctoral candidate in behavioral ecology at Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada. To investigate this theory, Skinner carried out a novel experiment to assess the personalities and sociability of eastern garter snakes. The results showed that “like us, they seek out social contacts, and they’re particular about whom they socialize with,” says Skinner.

The idea that snakes have close friends may be surprising, but such relationships are increasingly being found throughout the animal kingdom, from bats to elephants. A recent analysis of bats showed, for example, that bats and humans both have conditional friendships.

Scientists are likely better at discovering friendships among animals now than, say, 30 years ago, partly because many societies are more accepting of such a concept, and because researchers have far better tools for gathering and analyzing the data.

However, the scientists have no idea what’s motivating friendships in garter snakes, though they do know it’s not related to reproduction or mating (交配): The study snakes did not prefer the opposite sex as friends. But such partnerships must be offering some benefit-otherwise the animals would not waste the energy forming such bonds. For example, snake friends usually curl up together, which helps them keep heat and defend against natural enemies.

Whatever the reason, says Gordon Burghardt, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Tennessee, the study “should help convince people that snakes aren’t all mysterious loners, but have more social intelligence and a larger social ability than most of us realize.”

1.What can we know from the new study?

A.Snakes make friends for their next generation.

B.Snakes are kinder to each other than to mankind.

C.Snakes have special preferences for their partners.

D.Snakes also need social contacts and close friends.

2.Why can friendships among animals be researched better than before?

A.Because of the unique experiment by Skinner.

B.Because of more social support and better equipment.

C.More researchers are gathering and analyzing the data.

D.More people are changing their attitude toward animals.

3.In which way is snakes’ friendship special?

A.Snakes’ friendship does not last long.

B.Snakes prefer the opposite sex as friends.

C.Snakes make friends for the benefit of themselves.

D.Snakes are not particular about whom to make friends with.

4.What’s the main idea of the text?

A.Snakes may also have friends.

B.Snakes are good at making friends.

C.Snakes can live with us peacefully.

D.Snakes will never feel lonely.

Global warming happens when greenhouse gases trap heat and light from the sun in the earth’s atmosphere, which increases the temperature. This is like when heat is trapped in a car. On a hot day, the car gets hotter when it is out in the parking lot. This is because the heat and light from the sun can get into the car, by going through the windowsbut it can’t get back out. This is what the greenhouse effect does to the earth .The heat and light can get through the atmosphere, but it can’t get out .As a result, the temperature rises.

Sometimes the temperature can change in a way that helps us. The greenhouse effect makes the earth appropriate for people to live on. Without it, the earth would be freezing, or it would be burning hot. It would be freezing at night because we would not get the sun’s heat and light. During the day, especially during the summer, it would be burning because the sun would be up with no atmosphere to filter(过滤) it, so people, plants, and animals would be exposed to all the light and heat.

Although the greenhouse effect makes the earth able to have people living on it, if there gets to be too many gases, the each can get unusually warmer, and many plants, animals and people will die. Plants would die because they would not be able to take the heat .This would cause us to have less food to eat, and it would also limit the food that animals have. With less food for the animals that we need to survive we would even have less food. Gradually, people, plants, and animals would all die of hunger.

People are doing many things to try to stop global warming. One thing is carpooling-driving with someone to a place that you are both going to. Another thing is being more careful about leaving electrical devices turned on. Now, more people are even riding buses or bikes to lower the amount of greenhouse gases in the air .Although adults do many things to help stop global warming, kids call do just as much.

1.By the example given in Paragraph l, the author wants to__________.

A.explain how global warming happens

B.show his feeling in a car in hot summer

C.tell us cars are causes of greenhouse gases

D.say that I there are greenhouse gases in every car

2.The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refers to__________.

A.light B.greenhouse effect

C.temperature D.heat

3.What is the effect of atmosphere?

A.IT only traps the heat of the sun.

B.It does great harm to humans.

C.It makes the earth neither to hot nor too cold.

D.It prevents all the light from the sun shining on the earth.

4.What is the main idea of the third paragraph?

A.lf there is greenhouse effect all the plants will die

B.Human beings are likely to disappear from the earth

While Andrew was getting ready for work one Friday morning, he announced to his wife that he had finally decided to ask his boss for a salary raise. All day Andrew felt nervous and anxious as he thought about the upcoming showdown. What if Mr Larchmont refused to grant his request? Andrew had worked so hard in the last 18 months and landed some great accounts for Braer and Hopkins Advertising Agency. Of course, he deserved a wage increase.

The thought of walking into Larchmont’s office left Andrew weak in the knees. Late in the afternoon he was finally courageous enough to approach his superior. To his delight and surprise, the ever-frugal(一向节俭的)Harvey Larchmont agreed to give Andrew a raise!

Andrew arrived home that eveningdespite breaking all city and state speed limitsto a beautiful table set with their best china, and candles lit. His wife, Tina, had prepared a delicate meal including his favorite dishes. Immediately he figured someone from the office had tipped her off!

Next to his plate Andrew found a beautiful lettered note. It was from his wife. It read: “Congratulations, my love! I knew you’d get the raise! I prepared this dinner to show just how much I love you. I am so proud of your accomplishments!” He read it and stopped to reflect on how sensitive and caring Tina was.

After dinner, Andrew was on his way to the kitchen to get dessert when he observed that a second card had slipped out of Tina’s pocket onto the floor. He bent forward to pick it up. It read: “Don’t worry about not getting the raise! You do deserve one! You are a wonderful provider and I prepared this dinner to show you just how much I love you even though you did not get the increase.”

Suddenly tears swelled in Andrew’s eyes. Total acceptance! Tina’s support for him was not conditional upon his success at work.

The fear of rejection is often softened and we can undergo almost any setback or rejection when we know someone loves us regardless of our success or failure.
