The days of dragging heavy luggage through an airport may be over thanks to a new robotic suitcase that follows its owner like a loyal dog.

Called Cowa Robot, the $650 carry-on suitcase moves on its own at a top speed of nearly 4.5mph and can find its way back to its owner within a distance of 164 feet.

To activate (启动) it, all the user has to do is press a hidden button in the handle and start walking — it will automatically keep up thanks to high-tech sensors in the case and a tracker bracelet (手环) worn by the traveler. High-tech sensors in the case and a bracelet make the Cowa Robot stays around 2 feet behind its owner.

Designed by a Shanghai-based startup, Cowa Robot was built with the latest in robotics to avoid objects in its path and actively look for its owner if it gets separated. The carry-on case has a built-in camera sensor to find its owner and it connects to a smartphone app via Bluetooth.

It follows at a 45-degree radius and can be programmed to follow a specific path, and it has a handle so it can be dragged when the airport is too crowded. The 10lb suitcase has four USB ports and a built-in battery that can charge a passenger’s mobile phone or tablet, and has a separate section for laptops or other devices. It is made from a sturdy German Bayer PC material to protect its contents and has a logo that lights up.

1.The suitcase will keep up with its owner because it is equipped with  .

A.a handle and wheels B.sensors and a tracker bracelet

C.a mobile phone and a tablet D.a smartphone and a log

2.Where can’t the suitcase probably work well according to the text?

A.Inside an airport. B.In a station.

C.In a crowded place. D.In a noisy place.

3.What does the text probably come from?

A.A technology report. B.A guidebook.

C.An announcement. D.An advertisement.

4.What is the text mainly about?

D.A more expensive suitcase for travelers.

One of India’s longest and strongest heat waves in decades, with temperatures reaching 123°F (51° C) has killed at least 36 lives since it began in May, and the government has warned that the suffering might continue as the arrival of monsoon (季风) rains has been delayed.

India’s heat waves have grown particularly strong in the past decade, killing thousands of people and affecting an increasing number of states. This year, the extreme temperatures have struck large parts of northern and central India.

Anup Kumar Srivastava, an expert at India’s National Disaster Management Authority, said the number of Indian states hit by heat waves was expected to grow to 23 this year from 9 in 2015. He said, “This year, the number of heat wave days has also increased — and it’s not just day temperatures, night temperatures have also been high.” He added that the coming storms would bring down temperatures in some areas, but that heat waves might pick up again until the monsoon rains arrive.

India’s Meteorological Department warns that extreme heat brings a very high likelihood of developing heat illness and heat stroke in all ages. Medical authorities have canceled leaves for doctors at hospitals in Churu as the number of patients has soared. Schools in central India have remained closed.

In the capital, New Delhi, temperatures reached a record 118.4°F (45°C) on Monday, June 10. Clouds on Tuesday promised rain, but largely failed to deliver. Dust storms the next day lowered temperatures to around   100 °F (38°C).

Heat records around the world are more likely to be broken as average temperatures climb upward because of rising greenhouse gas emissions.

1.Why might India’s heat waves continue according to the government?

A.Because clouds have failed to gather.

B.Because there are fewer dust storms.

C.Because temperatures stay high day and night.

D.Because monsoon rains have come later than usual.

2.What does the underlined word “soared” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean?

A.Stayed low. B.Increased sharply.

C.Remained the same. D.Decreased slightly.

3.What was the weather of New Delhi most probably like on June 11th?

A.Dry. B.Cloudy. C.Rainy. D.Cool.

4.What’s the best title for the text?

A.India has Become the Hottest in History.

B.Heat Records Around the World Are Broken.

C.36 Died in India with Temperature Shooting up to 123°F.

D.Indian Government Took Measures to Handle Heat Waves.

It was “Disabilities Day at the Capitol ” and I was there, along with hundreds of Georgians, hoping to get the attention of our legislators (立法者). My thoughts ran back to the days when I was struggling to deal with my hearing loss learning, often dependent on others to help me hear. Now I stood under the gold dome of the Georgia Capitol, a member of the disabled community claiming the rights of people with disabilities.

After the rally (集会) I followed the crowd across the street to a free lunch. Although the crowd was huge, I managed to find a place to sit. I introduced myself to the young woman on my right, Kendall. However, with my hearing loss and her serious speech disorder, a conversation with her was next to impossible.

After a few moments, I realized that Kendall’s personal attendant (护工) was not present. I asked if anyone knew where she was and found out there had been a family situation and the attendant had to leave. “But,” I said, “who’s going to feed Kendall?” My thoughts were racing: someone had to help Kendall. In admitting her need I had to at once declare my responsibility to help.

Surprisingly, Kendall spoke clearly with her eyes. It was those eyes that spoke to me that day as we were waiting for lunch. I asked if I might serve her lunch. She nodded “Yes!” and her eyes said “Thank you!”

Helping Kendall that day shows an important belief of my life: We need each other. With or without a disability, it is our need for each other that makes us have a good life.

1.What’s the author’s purpose in attending “Disabilities Day at the Capitol”?

A.To defend the rights of the disabled. B.To have a free lunch with friends.

C.To deal with his hearing problem. D.To give support to the legislators.

2.Why couldn’t the author make a conversation with Kendall?

A.Because they were in a noisy crowd. B.Because they didn’t know each other.

C.Because they spoke different languages. D.Because they both had certain disabilities.

3.How did the author help Kendall?

A.By calling her family. B.By feeding her lunch.

C.By admitting her need. D.By finding her attendant.

4.What does the author intend to tell us through the text?

A.We need each other to live a good life.

B.We should support people with disabilities.

C.People with disabilities should help each other.

D.People with disabilities should learn to be independent.

Time is on your side

How frequently do you say “I don’t have time”? Quite often, I guess. Every time we say those words, they make us feel weak and out of control. You are in control of your hours and your life. 1.

I know it’s not as easy as simply turning off the TV. But here are two steps that will help you take back control and get time on your side.

2.

Be honest: do you spend an hour or two visiting Weixin and QQ every day? Are you spending time with people that you don’t really like just to please them? Are there meetings you attend that you can politely refuse?

It’s time to get real about the hours that add up to a lot of dissatisfying nothing. Think how you can cancel daily activities that are not useful. 3.

Change your language.

Words matter. They have power. Saying “I don’t have time” is an excuse for not wanting to do something. Here are some good, empowering alternatives (选择):

“I choose not to start that project until next year.”

4.

“I’d love to go out this weekend but have important work I need to do first.”

Get better at saying no. 5. Use little pockets of time (friend running late, car stuck in traffic, meeting ending 10 minutes early) to do some productive thinking. All these things can add up over time more than you believe!

A.Identify your blocks.

B.But you are likely wasting a lot of it!

C.I really don’t have enough time to do it.

D.Replace them with things that satisfy you.

E.Take no notice of all those unimportant messages on your phone.

F.I’d love to read that book — I’ll get to it after my homework is complete!

G.When you don’t have a plan for your life, someone else will plan it for you.

In the West, people are taught to wear masks only when they get sick. Masks are seen as a tool to protect sick people and prevent the disease from spreading, so healthy people don’t need to wear them. Therefore, during the novel coronavirus outbreak, overseas Chinese students said that they would be “stared at like a virus spreader” if they go out with a mask. According to a survey done by Global Times among some European and American people, wearing a mask in public can make them feel “worried”, “shy”, and “afraid of being looked at differently.”

But as the number of COVID-19 cases continues to grow around the world, many people in the West are changing their attitudes. In the US, for example, the need for masks is very high now. The US surgeon general (卫生局局长) has been asking people to avoid hoarding too many masks, as they are more needed in hospitals than by the general public.

However, in Asian countries like China and Japan, there has been a long tradition of mask-wearing. In China, for example, when doctor Wu Liande invented the modern medical mask during the pneumonic plague (肺鼠疫) in 1910, the mask became a symbol of China’s position as a modern, scientific nation, according to Scottish medical anthropologist (人类学家) Christos Lynteris. The 2003 SARS epidemic led to the wide use of masks as a form of anti-viral (抗病毒的) protection in China and elsewhere in East Asia.

In Japan, wearing masks has long been seen as a manner to reassure (使安心) others when one catches a cold or flu. Some Japanese also turn masks into fashion accessories (配饰), with different colors and patterns to match their clothes. Wearing masks is also a way to “hide” for young women when they don’t have their makeup (化妆) on.

In more collectivist (集体主义的) cultures in Asia, wearing masks might also be a symbol of solidarity (团结) during the outbreak, according to Lynteris. People wear masks “to show that they want to stick together” in the face of danger, Lynteris wrote.

1.Why don’t healthy people in the West wear masks?

A.They don’t think masks can prevent disease.

B.Only medical workers need to wear masks.

C.They think masks are for sick people to wear.

D.Wearing a mask looks funny.

2.What does the underlined word “hoarding” in paragraph 2 mean?

A.wearing B.making C.throwing D.keeping

3.Masks have been widely used in China since _____.

A.the outbreak of SARS in 2003

B.the pneumonic plague in 1910

C.Christos Lynteris wore one publicly

D.the invention of the modern medical mask

4.The main idea of the passage is_________.

A.proving the importance of wearing masks during an epidemic

B.showing opinions about masks between different countries

C.explaining why Westerners don’t wear masks

D.introducing the history of wearing masks

Dear Alfred,

I want to tell you how important your help is to my life.

Growing up, I had people telling me I was too slow, though, with an IQ of 150+ at 17, I’m anything but stupid. The fact was that I was found to have ADHD(注意力缺陷多动障碍). Anxious all the time, I was unable to keep focused for more than an hour at a time.

However, when something did interest me, I could become absorbed. In high school, I became curious about the computer, and built my first website. Moreover, I completed the senior course of Computer Basics, plus five relevant pre-college courses.

While I was exploring my curiosity, my disease got worse. I wanted to go to college after high school, but couldn’t . So, I was killing my time at home until June 2012 when I discovered the online computer courses of your training center.

Since then, I have taken courses like Data Science and Advanced Mathematics. Currently, I’m learning your Probability course. I have hundreds of printer paper, covered in self-written notes from your video. This has given me a purpose.

Last year, I spent all my time looking for a job where, without dealing with the public , I could work alone, but still have a team to talk to. Luckily, I discovered the job—Data Analyst—this month and have been going full steam ahead. I want to prove that I can teach myself a respectful profession, without going to college, and be just as good as, if not better than, my competitors.

Thank you. You’ve given me hope that I can follow my heart. For the first time, I feel good about myself because I’m doing something, not because someone told me I was doing good. I feel whole.

This is why you’re saving my life.

Yours,

Tanis

Opera for Beginners

Many people think that opera is boring, difficult to understand and unpleasant to listen to. They only see strange people singing in a foreign language and wearing funny costumes. They're too quick to judge and a lot of people have believed stupid ideas about opera without ever actually seeing one. If one takes opera seriously, with an open heart, and goes to several good live performances, I don't see any reason why he or she would dislike or hate it. The following tips can help you learn to enjoy opera.

First of all, if you are new to opera, start with a short, well-known title, such as The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart. In the beginning, avoid difficult operas with complex storylines. If your first experience is not fun, then you will expect all operas to be boring. Moreover, before going to a performance, do a little bit of homework: learn the story of the opera. If you know about the main characters and the story before you start watching, it will be much easier to understand what is happening on the stage. Finally, the most important way to enjoy opera is to keep an open mind. If you believe that you will enjoy watching opera, then you will most likely enjoy it. Think of opera as a live TV show. Opera shows the same things—love and hate, good and evil and humans and nature—that are found in many of today's popular movies and best-selling novels. In fact, many of these movies and novels use stories copied from famous operas!

Opera is full of catchy, wonderful melodies (旋律). It's full of drama and laughter. It's full of wonder and life. Opera can be fun to watch, and it allows the audience to experience different cultures. Many people have enjoyed it for hundreds of years, and by following the tips above, you can enjoy it, too. Indeed, opera will change the minds of the people who once hated it. And most importantly, as one of the most diverse art forms out there, opera helps you appreciate different performance styles from all over the world.

1.Many people think that opera is boring because ______.

A.it is like a TV show B.they know little about it

C.they dislike its storylines D.its music style is old-fashioned

2.Which is a good way for beginners to enjoy opera?

A.To start with a long opera. B.To learn to sing an opera.

C.To master a foreign language. D.To get familiar with an opera's story.

3.Many famous operas, popular movies, and best-selling novels ______.

A.have the same writer B.share a similar story

C.teach people about lifestyles D.help people keep an open mind

4.What does the underlined word “diverse” in the last paragraph probably mean?

A.Various. B.Humorous. C.Ancient. D.Exciting.

The royal family is filled with rules, and one in particular might explain why Princess Charlotte is a princess, but her kids likely won't be.

When it comes to the British royal family, one thing is almost always true: they have a pretty confusing set of official rules and protocols. For instance, the royal family doesn't have a last name. And don't forget the fact that Queen Elizabeth celebrates two birthdays every year.

If your head isn't swimming yet, consider the tradition of royal titles. As a British custom, only the daughter of a prince or a prince's wife may be considered a formal “princess”. The latter applies to Kate, who is both a princess and the Duchess of Cambridge thanks to her marriage to Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge. And their children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, also bear official royal titles because their father is Prince William.

However, while Prince George's future children will also carry their father's royal status, any children that Princess Charlotte has will not automatically be considered princes or princesses. Why? Royal custom dictates that royal titles are passed down via sons, but not daughters.

However, while Prince George's future children will also carry their father's royal status, any children that Princess Charlotte has will not automatically be considered princes or princesses. Why? Royal custom dictates that royal titles are passed down via sons, but not daughters.

"Royal titles are inherited through sons, so if Princess Charlotte has children they would not automatically inherit the titles (his or her royal highness) HRH, Prince, or Princess,” Lucy Hume, associate director of etiquette experts Debrett's, told Town& Country.

Of course, exceptions can (and will!) be made. (Learn about every time the British royal family broke their own protocol.) The Queen has offered HRH status to other royal offspring in the past, including the children of Queen Elizabeth's daughter, Anne. Although Princess Anne and her husband, Captain Phillips, declined, perhaps Princess Charlotte will be extended the same offer when her own children are born.

1.What's the meaning of the underlined word "protocol" in the second paragraph?

A.Promise. B.Behavior. C.Manners. D.Connection.

2.What kind of child is regarded as "princess"?

3.Who is Charlotte's father?

A.Prince George. B.Elizabeth. C.Prince William. D.Captain Philips.

4.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?

A.Any person can break traditional rules.

B.Not every person must obey traditional rules.

C.Any British royal family member has their own title.

D.Maybe the British royal family will break their own rules.

Most of the new diseases we humans have faced in the past several decades have come from animals. The more we come into contact with wild animals, the more we risk a so-called disease “spillover” from animals to humans.

“As people move and wildlife move in response to a changing environment, humans and wildlife and animals will come in contact more regularly,” said Jeanne Fair from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. Fair argues that by shifting animal habitats, climate change will also make the opportunities for disease spillover more frequent. “Everything is sort of shifting and will shift into the future as the environment changes through climate change,” Fair said.

Scientists, including climatologists and epidemiologists (流行病学家) on Fair’s team at Los Alamos, are beginning to model how changes to the climate will impact the spread of infectious diseases. It’s early days for this kind of research, but previous studies suggest that extreme weather has already played a role in at least one outbreak. Scientists say drought and deforestation have combined to force bats out of rain forests and into orchards (果园) in Malaysia to find food. Those bats, a common disease reservoir, then passed the Nipah virus through pigs to humans for the first time in the late 1990s.

“We’re going by the past data to really predict what’s going to happen in the future,” Fair said, “And so, anytime you increase that wildlife-human interface, that’s sort of an emerging disease hot spot. And so, that’s just increasing as we go forward.”

Jeffrey Shaman, head of the climate and health program at Columbia University’s public health school, argues we don’t yet know whether climate change will cause a net increase in infectious disease rates globally. For example, mosquitoes carry disease that affects millions of people across the world every year. As their habitats expand in some parts of the world, they might contract diseases elsewhere. Shaman says what we know for certain about climate change is that it will make it harder to predict where disease outbreaks will pop up.

1.How does climate change affect the spread of disease according to Fair?

A.By breaking animals’habits. B.By increasing animals’varieties.

C.By promoting animals’breeding. D.By changing animals’living environment.

2.What is the example of bats for in paragraph 3?

A.Explaining the influence of Nipah virus.

B.Proving the harm of bats to human beings.

C.Showing the effects of climate change on disease.

D.Presenting scientists’early study about the cause of disease.

3.What can we infer from Fair’s words in paragraph 4?

A.Humans should give up studying animals.

B.Frequent contact with animals can cause disease outbreaks.

C.Disease hot spots will disappear if animals die out.

D.Past data can solve the problems in the future.

4.What could be the best title for the text?

A.Climate Change and Disease Spillover

B.Animals’Interaction with Humans

C.Early Studies about Extreme Weather

D.Scientists’Prediction for Disease Outbreaks

“Beauty isn't about having a pretty face,” begins a motivational quote. “It's about having a pretty mind, a pretty heart, and a pretty soul. Oh, and pretty nails!”

That may be Angela Peters' motto. Last July, Peters, rolled her wheelchair into a nail salon (沙龙) at the Walmart shopping center in Burton to have her nails done. But Peters, who has cerebral palsy (脑瘫), was turned away. The salon told her that they were afraid it would be too difficult to properly paint her nails given that her hands kept shaking. What was meant to be a day of beauty for Peters was now a disappointment.

A Walmart cashier about to go on her break happened to see this. Ebony Harris recognized Peters as a Walmart regular. “She's just like everyone else. She wants to look pretty. So why can't she?” Harris said.

Harris approached Peters. “Do you want me to do your nails?” she asked.

A smile spread across Peters' face. “Yeah!” Harris led Peters into the supermarket, where they shopped for nail polish. They settled on a color that would catch every eye. They then made their way into a neighboring Subway, found a table for two, and started. Harris gently took Peters' hand into hers and carefully began painting her nails. “She moved her hands a little bit, and she kept saying she was sorry,” Harris said. “I told her, ‘Don't say that. You're fine.’ She makes me look at life and appreciate it much more than I have.”

Watching it all with surprise and admiration was Subway employee Tasia Smith. Smith was so taken by the scene that she wrote about it on Facebook. “She was so patient with her,” she wrote. “Thanks to the Walmart worker for making this beautiful girl's day!”

1.Why does the author mention the quote in the first paragraph?

A.To compare different views. B.To introduce the topic of the passage.

C.To show the importance of beauty. D.To share his opinion about beauty.

2.The nail salon refused Peters' request because     .

A.she had to use a wheelchair B.they were too busy to serve her

C.she couldn't keep her hands still D.they hadn't the color she wanted

3.Which of the following words can best describe Harris?

A.Brave and generous. B.Careful and fair-minded.

C.Honest and considerate. D.Patient and warm-hearted.

4.What can be inferred about Tasia Smith from the last paragraph?

A.She thought highly of Harris' behavior.

B.She wrote a thank-you letter to Walmart.

C.She regretted not lending Peters a helping hand.

D.She misunderstood Harris' relationship with Peters.

The Dickensons lived on the eastern coast of America and the three boys,Carl,Simon, and little Ben loved the water. The elder brothers usually helped their dad on his farm and took care of their little brother.

There was an island off shore in the distance. One Saturday the two elder brothers decided to go there for an adventure. When they were leaving, their father said,"Boys,I have to go to town and I want you to take care of Ben. You can carry him together but be careful!"Although they thought Ben was too young to take risks, they still took him.

When the three arrived at the shore, they were lucky to find an old rowboat with oars(桨)。Carl and Simon took turns to paddle(划桨)the boat.

Suddenly they noticed the old boat leaking slowly. Carl asked them not to worry and said that they could empty water when they got back. But as the boys neared the island, they struck a rock hidden under the water. It enlarged the hole, more water pouring in. They were glad to be safe on shore!

How can we get back with the weight of us?"Simon wondered.

Carl answered"You row Ben across, and then come back for me. If we move fast,it won't sink with only two. "Simon agreed.

The boys started to explore the island. It was flat with many trees. In a couple of hours they had gone all around the island, but when they headed for their boat, they were shocked!Their boat was bumping against trees. The tide was coming in!The island was disappearing!

The boys took a rock and tried to fill it into the hole but they only made it worse because of the old wood. Carl thought a minute"Simon, you take Ben as fast as you can. Then run for the house and see if Dad can come to rescue me. I can climb a tree or something that will give me maybe another hour. "The brothers hugged. Then Carl turned the boat around, helped Ben get in and pushed it as hard as he could toward home

Paragraph 1:

Half an hour passed and only a small part of the island was above water now.
