The World Health Organization(WHO)has the following advice to protect yourself from being infected with the coronavirus or other flu-like diseases.

1. Clean your hands often and carefully with an alcohol-based hand cleaner or wash them with soap and water. Washing your hands kills viruses that may be on your hands.

Keep social distancing.  2. When someone coughs or sneezes, he releases small drops of liquid from his mouth or nose which may contain the viruses. If you are too close, you can breathe in the liquid, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease.

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth. Your hands touch many surfaces where viruses can survive up to nine days. Once contaminated(弄脏), hands can carry the viruses to your eyes, nose or mouth. 3.

Promote respiratory hygiene(呼吸道卫生). Make sure that you cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or facial tissue when you cough or sneeze. 4.

If you have a fever, a cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early. Stay home if you feel unwell, even with mild signs of infection such as headache and slight runny nose, until you recover. If you have a fever, a cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention, and follow the directions of your local health official. 5. This will also help to prevent possible spread of the coronavirus and other viruses.

A.Wash your hands frequently.

B.Then throw away the used tissue in a specially provided dustbin immediately.

C.If not, you are bound to be in a horrible condition.

D.Stay home and never participate in any social activities.

E.From there, the viruses can enter your body and can make you sick.

F.Stay at least one meter away from anyone who is coughing or sneezing.

G.Calling ahead will permit the health official to quickly direct you to the right health facility.

Red pandas are native to the high forests of Asia. They are only a little bigger than a house cat and considered to be endangered. Scientists reported last month that not all red pandas belong to the same species. There are two different species of this animalnot just onea study found. The scientists reported finding major differences in three genetic markers between Chinese red pandas and Himalayan red pandas. Scientists identified the markers after studying DNA from 65 of the creatures. DNA carries genetic information for the developmentgrowth and reproduction of living things. Documenting the existence of two separate species could help guide efforts for protecting red pandasscientists added.

Chinese red pandas live in northern Myanmaras well as southeastern TibetSichuan and Yunnan provinces in China. Himalayan red pandas are native to NepalIndiaBhutan and southern Tibet in Chinathe researchers said.

Conservation biologists Yibo Hu and Fuwen Wei 1ed the study.  “To conserve the genetic uniqueness of the two specieswe should avoid their interbreeding(杂交繁殖)in captivity”Hu said. “Interbreeding between species may harm the genetic adaptations already established for their local habitat environment. ”

Scientists had earlier suggested there were two species of red panda. But the new study was the first to provide the genetic information necessary to permit such a judgment. International experts estimate a total population of around 10000 red pandas in the wild. The two species differ in coloration and skull shape. The Himalayan red panda is the rarer of the two.

Major dangers to red pandas include deforestation and habitat loss. While they have similar namesred pandas and giant pandas are not closely related. Giant pandas are one of the world’s eight bear species. Red pandas are sometimes called living fossils because they have no close living relatives. They are the only remaining member of their mammalian family.

1.What is the purpose of recording the existence of the two different species of red panda?

A.To direct efforts for the protection of them.

B.To better distinguish red pandas and giant pandas.

C.To inform people there exist two species of red panda.

D.To confirm there are major differences between them.

2.In which place can we spot Himalayan red pandas?

A.Southeastern Tibet. B.Yunnan Province.

C.Southern Tibet. D.Northern Myanmar.

3.What can we know about the two species of red panda?

A.They belong to the same animal family as giant pandas.

B.Their existence has been known already.

C.They differ mainly in size and shape of skull.

D.To protect themwe should interbreed them.

4.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?

I’m going through it right now. Last night one of our three family dogs was hit and killed by a car in front of my mother’s house. The dogs became, more or less, my mother’s surrogate children after her human children grew up and moved out and my father ran with a midlife crisis and left her. The one that was killed had bonded with my mother far more than the others.

She is extremely shocked. I loved the dog, but my true sadness currently results from having to watch my mother bear another tragedy after everything she has been through in her life. In the midst of all of this, I have to sincerely applaud the driver of the vehicle, which feels wrong, but it’s not.

I’ll start by stating it was not his fault. The dog ran after a deer into the road at night. In an effort not to hit the deer with his car, he changed direction, not seeing the dog, resulting in its death. He could have very easily continued on his way, but he did something that I hope I never forget.

In my eyes, he did the right thing. The driver pulled over, carefully wrapped our dog in a blanket he got from his car to preserve its dignity, and carried it up to my mother’s front door.

He was visibly shaking and very upset. He informed my mother of what happened and she broke down immediately. He comforted her the best a stranger could and waited with her while my sister rushed to her house. He left his information and offered assistance in any way he could.

Yes, he is the man who hit and killed our dog accidentally. What he really did was spare my mother, and potentially my sister, from coming across a horrible scene themselves while searching for the dog. He had so many choices that were far easier to make than what he chose. He did the right thing and for that, thank you, Stranger. You restored my faith in humanity.

1.What do we know about the dog killed by the driver?

A.It was killed by the driver on purpose.

B.It lost its life during a fight against a deer.

C.It was a particular favorite of the author’s mother.

D.It got killed by hitting the deer while running after it.

2.What does the underlined part “feels wrong, but it’s not” in Paragraph 2 probably mean

A.The driver ought to answer for the dog’s death.

B.The author thought it sensible to praise the driver.

C.The author believed it was not the driver’s fault to kill the dog.

D.The driver should not take responsibility for the dog’s death at a11.

3.Which of the following can best describe the driver?

A.Self-condemned and considerate. B.Calm and far-sighted.

C.Reliable and generous. D.Irresponsible and unreasonable.

4.What may the author agree with?

A.Still waters have deep bottoms.

B.Those who are ready to believe are easy to cheat.

C.When the wound is healedthe pain is forgotten.

D.Taking responsibility is the best policy.

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I took a fare at 2:30 AM. When I arrived to collect, the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window. I walked to the door and knocked. “Just a minute.” answered a weak, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor.

After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 80’s stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat, like somebody out of a 1940s movie.  “Would you carry my bag out to the car?” she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman. She held my arm and we walked slowly toward my car.

She kept thanking me for my kindness. “It’s nothing”, I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”

“Oh, you’re such a good man,” she said. When we got in the car, she gave me an address, and then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?”

I looked in the rear-view mirror(后视镜). Her eyes were shinning. “I don't have any family left,” she continued. “The doctor says I don’t have very long.” I quietly reached over and shut off the meter. “What route would you like me to take?” I asked.

For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an operator. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived. Sometimes she’d ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.

As the first ray of the sun appeared, she suddenly said, “I’m tired. Let’s go now.” We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a small hospice(临终关怀医院), with a driveway that passed under an entrance hall. Two nurses came out to the car as soon as we pulled up.

One of the great benefits of being able to record sound is to make books available for listening. With the appearance of audio recordings, many people were able to hear literary classics read aloud. Audio books are, of course, books read aloud and recorded to be listened to on some kind of player. As sound technology has changed, audio books have changed, as well. 1. Now, books are also available on audio tape or CD.

Talking books are books created for people who have sight problems. Some of these talking books often need special players to be used. Many visually damaged people are able to receive players for free. 2.

CD technology has caused great changes in the talking book industry, since more data can be written on a single disc. 3. So the visually damaged person has a multi-use machine.

4. Some are even read in the form of a play, in which different actors take the parts of the characters in the book. They may also have sound effects or music to help improve the listening experience.

Some book clubs have started offering audio books as part of their services. Libraries also have audio books available and they may also be purchased online or at any book store. 5. Those who feel they do not have time to enjoy the pleasure of a good book may find audio books to be the next best thing.

A.They are no longer available only on volumes.

B.Many talking book players will also play music CDs.

C.Audio books are popular with travelers and busy individuals.

D.Many audio books also feature famous actors reading the books.

E.People can listen to a personal music player whenever they want.

F.It is an affordable option if you typically listen to more than one book a month.

G.These players enable them to play their talking books independently, without the help of a sighted person.

Artemis is NASA’s new lunar exploration program. Through the Artemis program, NASA will use new technology to study the Moon in new and better ways, and prepare for human missions to Mars.

NASA’s new rocket will carry the Orion spacecraft to lunar orbit. Then, astronauts will dock (对接) Orion at a small spaceship called the Gateway, from which the crew will take trips to the lunar surface in a new human landing system, and then return to the Gateway. The crew will return to the Earth aboard Orion.

NASA will test the rocket and spacecraft in flight, then send a crew for a test flight:

Artemis 1 will be a test flight of the SLS rocket with the Orion spacecraft with no crew.

Artemis 2 will fly SLS and Orion with a crew past the Moon, then circle it and return to the Earth. This trip will be the farthest any human has gone into space.

Artemis 3 will send a crew with the first woman and the next man to land on the Moon by 2024. The Artemis 3 crew will visit the Moon’s South Pole. No one has ever been there.

At the Moon, astronauts will:

Search for the Moon’s water and use it.

Learn how to live and work on the surface of another celestial body (天体) where astronauts are just three days from home.

Test the technologies we need before sending astronauts on missions to Mars, which can take up-to three years round trip.

The Moon is a good place to learn new science. NASA will learn more about the Moon, the Earth and even the Sun. The Moon is a “test bed” for Mars. The Moon is a place to show that astronauts will one day be able to work away from the Earth on Mars for long periods of time.

1.What is the aim of the Artemis program?

A.To help astronauts return to the Earth. B.To be ready for the landing on Mars.

C.To study the Mars using new science. D.To test the Moon landing spacecraft, Orion.

2.Which will be the achievement of the Artemis series?

A.Going to the Moon’s South Pole. B.Making the farthest trip into space.

C.Sending the first man to the Moon. D.Flying to the Moon with three persons.

3.What will Artemis astronauts do on the Moon?

A.Send astronauts to Mars. B.Run a three-year-long test.

C.Find and make use of water. D.Learn to live not far from home.

4.What can we conclude from the text?

A.It is possible to live on another planet now.

B.The crew will reach the lunar surface from the Orion.

C.NASA has sent the first woman astronaut to the Moon.

D.The Artemis program is of great help to Mars exploring.

Scientists say they have found high levels of small plastic particles(颗粒) in Arctic snow. A German-Swiss research team collected snow samples(样本)from the Arctic and other areas. They included northern Germany, the Bavarian and Swiss Alps, and the North Sea island of Heligoland. When the researchers examined the samples in a laboratory, they were surprised to find very high levels of microplastics.

Microplastics are very small pieces of plastic. These plastic particles are generally smaller than 5 millimeters in length. They come from the breakdown of man-made plastic products and industrial waste.

The study found the highest levels of microplastics came from the Bavarian Alps. One snow sample from the area had 154,000 microplastic particles per liter. Samples collected from the Arctic had much lower levels. However, even samples from the Arctic contained up to 14,000 particles per liter.

The study also attempted to explore how some of the material could have been carried in the atmosphere. A limited number of earlier studies did find microplastics in the air of some cities, including Paris, Tehran and Dongguan, China.

Bergmann Melanie co-wrote the report on the new study. She believes the new study clearly shows that “the majority of the microplastic in the snow comes from the air.” The new study suggests that much of the microplastic found in Europe and the Arctic comes from the atmosphere and snow.

While there is growing concern about the effect of microplastics on the environment, scientists are still studying their possible harmful effects on humans and animals. “I hope the new study will lead to more research on this issue. I think  microscopic plastic particles should be included in worldwide observations of air pollution levels. We really need to know what effects microplastics have on humans, especially if inhaled with the air that we breathe.” Bergmann said.

1.Why did scientists collect samples from so many places in paragragh 1?

A.To make the research convincing.

B.To attract people to explore there.

C.To measure the length of microplastics .

D.To examine the samples easily in the lab.

2.What is the second paragraph mainly about?

A.The risks of microplastics.

B.The transport of microplastics.

C.The breakdown of plastic products.

D.The description of microplastics.

3.What did the research team find about microplastics?

A.Many people threw them away at the Alps.

B.They were delivered to remote areas through air.

C.They could be caught sight of in the air.

D.They had no great effect on the environment.

4.What can be inferred from what Bergmann said in the last paragraph?

A.Scientists are worried about the the influence of microplastics.

B.We have found a practical solution to the environment problem.

C.The effect of microplastics on human must be urgently researched.

D.There is no need to change observations of air pollution levels.

Health and Social Care Secretary Jeremy Hunt has announced that the UK will host the first ever Global Ministerial Mental Health Summit(峰会) in London this October. This global summit aims to put mental-health care on an equal footing with the physical kind.

But there is a long way to go. One in four people will experience a mental-health problem at some point in life. In rich countries mental illnesses account for more suffering and premature death than heart disease, strokes(中风) or cancer. Meanwhile the central-African countries have just one mental-health professional per 100,000 people, a fiftieth as many as Europe has. (Less than 1% of foreign aid for health care goes towards mental health.)

As developing countries handle infectious diseases, mental health will consume a greater share of budgets and attention there. By 2020 mental-health conditions may account for 15% of the global burden of disease, but even in rich countries many people with common problems still go without treatment.

It is clear that mental illness is fast becoming one of the global health challenges of the 21st century. Until recently, this hasn’t had the profile it deserves on a global stage. The ministers gathering in London must produce new money and focus—and not just another declaration. The summit is also expected to help countries learn from each other to find the best ways to deal with increased rates of depression and anxiety among young people.

1.Which of the following best explains “on an equal footing” underlined in paragraph 1?

A.Standing up for. B.Being as important as.

C.Standing in one’s shoes. D.Having an advantage over.

2.What is the purpose of holding the meeting?

A.To find more foreign aid for health care.

B.To make a declaration on mental illnesses.

C.To solve the physical problems of the youth.

D.To stress the importance of mental health.

3.Which disease causes more premature death in rich countries?

A.Heart disease. B.Cancer.

C.Mental illness. D.Stroke.

4.What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?

A.Effective measures should be taken on mental health.

B.The problem of mental illness has drawn enough attention.

C.People in developed countries suffer less mental illnesses.

D.Mental-health diseases have taken up about 15% of the global illness cases.

Do you remember the name of your kindergarten teacher? I do. Her name was Mrs. White. I don’t remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once told me we used to write a lot. And I would bring back what I wrote and she would see there were so many mistakes. But no red corrections. And always a star. Sometimes even a Good! That would make my heart soar with happiness. But it worried my mother, so when she went to meet Mrs. White for one of those Parent-Teacher meetings, she asked her why she never corrected my mistakes, why she never red-pencilled in the right spellings of words or pointed out grammatical errors.

Mrs. White explained the children were just beginning to get excited about using words, about forming sentences. She didn’t want to dampen that enthusiasm with red ink. Spelling and grammar could wait. The wonder of words wouldn’t ... And maybe she didn’t say it exactly like that, but I grew up learning to use words with loving confidence like that.

I look back now and think she must have been a rather extraordinary teacher—to allow the joy, wonder and excitement of expression to flower—however faultily like that.

I used to misspell “beautiful” a lot. Never could I quite remember that the “e” went before the “a”. Eventually the e’s and a’s settled into their right places of their own accord. I’m glad I didn’t wait on them though. Pretty is easier to spell but it doesn’t hold as much as you mean sometimes.

And thanks to Mrs. White, I had no qualms about writing what I meant even if I couldn’t quite spell it out. Because Life isn’t Pretty. It’s Beautiful.

1.How did the mother react to Mrs. White’s teaching method?

A.She paid no attention. B.She tried to correct it.

C.She quarreled with her. D.She went to consult her.

2.Why did the teacher never correct the mistakes?

A.She wanted parents to help the students.

B.She thought it was difficult to correct them.

C.She hoped to develop students’ confidence.

D.She wanted to strengthen teacher-student relationship.

3.What does the underlined word “qualm” in the last paragraph refer to?

A.Relaxation B.Concern

C.Patience D.Ambition.

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.Life Is Beautiful B.No Pains, No Gains

C.Practice Makes Perfect D.Spelling Is Important

Masterpieces

The Starry Night was painted in June 1889 when Vincent van Gogh was staying at a  home for the mentally ill. Van Gogh painted what he saw from his window—the night sky with clouds, stars and a moon. However, he didn’t just paint the clouds. He also painted the massive circles of white and yellow racing across the sky. The stars and the moon hang bright in the night sky. Beneath this amazing sky, we see a sleeping village and a dark, lonely tree.

His unusual use of colour has led experts to think that Van Gogh’s mental illness may have affected his sense of sight. He also took a drug that can make people see yellow spots, just like the stars in The Starry Night.

Unfortunately, Van Gogh’s unique paintings weren’t very popular and he only sold one painting in his lifetime. He also thought The Starry Night was a failure. However, the fact remains that The Starry Night is now one of the world’s most famous paintings.

The Scream was painted by Edvard Munch in 1893. What makes it striking is that it shows a thin figure with an expression of fear—the figure’s mouth is wide open and letting out a powerful scream. The figure covers his or her ears and looks directly at the viewer. This figure is set on a bridge above a dark, stormy sea, and against a burning orange-red sky.

In his diary, Munch talked about what inspired him. “I was walking down the road with two friends when the sun set; suddenly the sky turned as red as blood ... I stood there shaking. Then I heard the scream of nature.”

Many experts say that The Scream is connected to Munch’s mental health problems, which caused him a lot of pain.

The Empire of Light is a series of paintings by Belgian artist René Magritte. Between 1953 and 1954, he painted the same scene 27 times. It shows a beautiful house lit by lights from inside, surrounded by the darkness of night. What is strange is that above the house and the tree, we see a daytime sky full of brightness and soft white clouds. It seems like quite a mysterious scene.

Magritte was a painter inspired by his thoughts and ideas. His paintings were visual experiments as he tried to play with reality. His view was that art should shock the viewers and challenge their sense of reality.

The Empire of Light has produced different reactions in viewers. Some feel that the paintings look dark and troubling. Others, however, find them calming. As for Magritte himself, he thought that the change between day and night in the paintings was surprising. “I call this power poetry,” he said.

Many of the serious health concerns in modern America can be linked to poor dietPeople who regularly consume foods high in salt, sugar, and fats not only increase their chances of being overweight, but also increase their risks of developing diseases. Although some people who regularly consume unhealthy foods do so knowingly, there are also some people that remains undereducated about proper nutrition( ). What is more, people who live in food deserts—areas in low-income(低收入) neighborhoods that lack easy access(路径) to healthy, affordable food—may not even have the opportunity to get nutritious food.

Food deserts are located in low-income areas and most often develop when major supermarket chains either move out    of these areas or simply avoid building stores there in the first place. These supermarket chains tend to limit their store locations to richer urban or suburban neighborhoodsThis means that those who live in low-income areas often live miles away from the fresh meats and dairy products available at supermarkets. People of these areas are thus forced to travel long distances to do their grocery shopping, or else they are limited to the food available at local convenience stores. These stores often only sell packaged, processed foods that offer little nutrition.

Furthermore, there are too many fast food restaurants in low-income areas; recent research suggests that those living in the poorest areas of a city experience 2.5 times more exposure to fast food restaurants than people in the richest areas of the city. Because people who live in  food deserts often get their meals from fast food restaurants or convenience stores, they suffer from a variety of health problemsResearch has found that people who live in low-income neighborhoods are much more likely to develop healthy problems than those who live in richer neighborhoods.

Of course, it seems obvious that more supermarkets should be built in low-income neighborhoods. But in fact, it is difficult to attract supermarket chains into poor areas because poorer people have less money to spend on food. One way that the government can help to solve this problem is by offering tax breaks or other inspiring policies for supermarkets in low-income areas. In 2010, the Obama administration started the Healthy Food Financing program, which is designed to help bring grocery stores into food deserts.

While the government can improve low-income people’s access to healthy food to some extent, local actions often have a stronger and more immediate influenceCommunity gardens, independent food stores, and farmers’ markets are all examples of local actions that can take the place of the opening of a major chain supermarket. These efforts can be extremely beneficial, not only in providing people with access to healthier foods, but also in producing a sense of community in the neighborhoods.

A.People in rich areas are easier to develop diseases.

B.Fast food restaurants care much about people’s health.

D.Supermarket chains are unwilling to open stores in poor areas.

3.What does the writer want to tell us from the last two paragraphs?

A.Local actions should be encouraged and supported.

B.Supermarkets should take social responsibility.

C.Education for healthy diet must be improved.

D.Governments fail to improve people’s health.

The Boy Made It!

One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn’t have food, water, a phone, or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.

Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about all the survival shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.

He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to find shelter(避难所) from the freezing wind and snow. If he didn’t, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him.

Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could.

By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn’t lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last, Nicholas did the only thing he could—he huddled(蜷缩) in his cave and slept.

The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn’t find anyone. He  followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow, Nicholas was saved.

Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV. He had often watched Grylls’ survival show Man vs. Wild. That’s where he learned the tips that saved his life. In each episode(一期节目) of Man vs. Wild, Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out.

When Grylls heard about Nicholas’ amazing deeds, he was super impressed(印象深刻的) that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.

1.What happened to Nicholas one Sunday afternoon?

A.He got lost. B.He broke his skis.

C.He hurt his eyes. D.He caught a cold.

2.How did Nicholas keep himself warm?

A.He kept on skiing. B.He built a snow cave.

C.He drank water. D.He went to sleep.

3.On Tuesday, Nicholas _____.

C.was saved by a searcher D.stayed where he was

4.Nicholas left Grylls a very deep impression because he _____.

A.was very hard-working

B.created some tips for survival

Make Albertsville Shine

After a long and snowy winter, spring has finally come to Albertsville. The leaves are out on the trees, and the grass is green again. All around town, people are cleaning up their homes. They are pulling weeds and planting flowers. They are sweeping yards and washing windows. Before long, Albertsville will look as fresh and shiny as a new coin, right?

Definitely not. Just take a look at the streets and sidewalks around town. There is litter( 垃圾 ) everywhere: fast food wrappers, soft drink cans, plastic bags, and more. This litter is dirty and ugly. It takes the shine off our lovely town.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. In many neighboring towns, volunteer groups “adopt(认领 )” a mile of a street or road to keep clean. The groups include schools and clubs. Volunteers pick up litter, cut bushes, wash sidewalks, and even plant flowers!

Sure, the volunteers work hard, but they also get to enjoy the beauty of their town. Better yet, they feel proud of themselves for making their town a better place to live.

So what are the people of Albertsville waiting for? Talk to people in your school or club about adopting part of a street or road. Then get to work! If enough volunteer groups get busy, Albertsville really will shine this spring.

1.Albertsville doesn’t look fresh and shiny because of _____.

A.the lack of trees B.the litter on the roads

C.the dirty and ugly houses D.the bad weather in spring

2.Volunteers do the following EXCEPT _____.

A.picking up wastes B.looking after plants

C.raising money D.cleaning sidewalks

B.describe(描述) the beauty of Albertsville

C.call on(号召) people to help clean up Albertsville

D.compare(比较) Albertsville with neighboring towns

“White Bikes” on the Road

People in Amsterdam have been enjoying the benefits of cycling for years. The idea began about 50 years ago, and was first known as “white bikes”. Amsterdam is a good city for cycling because it’s _______ and therefore convenient for bikes. There are also plenty of places for bicycle parking and most streets in the city center have a bicycle path. Today some people call Amsterdam “the City of Bicycles” because of the _______ for bicycles there.

Where did the idea of “white bikes” come from? In the 1960s, a group of cycling fans came up with an idea. They believed that it would be better for everybody if cars weren’t _______ in the city center and only bicycles were. They were _______ that this would help to save energy,  reduce pollution and provide free public transport. The group painted hundreds of bicycles white and placed them in many areas around Amsterdam for people to use. Anyone was allowed to take them and use them for short journeys. Wherever someone _______ a journey, they would leave the bike there for someone else to use. Soon after, _______, problems came up and the “white bikes” all _______—thieves took all the bicycles within weeks!

In 1999, the “white bikes” returned to Amsterdam—this time with a computer tracking system to _______ their every move! To take a bicycle, you had to put in a special card. The   bikes were parked at special parking places. Thus people who wanted to use them had to take them to another special parking place near their destination and leave them there.

Thanks to the ideas and efforts of many people, like the cycling fans of the 1960s and those who enabled the return of “white bikes”, you can now enjoy clean air and _______ transport in central Amsterdam.

Nowadays, the idea of “white bikes” has pedalled its way around the world and there has been a global __________ in bike-sharing.
