Increase your creativity

Every month I face the same problem — how to write educational, informative and, hopefully, interesting articles. 1.. At other times my mind goes blank (空白的), and I experience a creative block.

At times we all face creative challenges in life, from designing websites to decorating our apartments, but there are ways to work through creative slumps (低潮).

Daydream

For years, others may have told you to stop daydreaming. 2.. Daydreaming sometimes helps you take a more creative approach to your problem.

Be happy

Some studies suggest that a positive mood (心情) encourages creativity because it increases activity in the parts of the brain related to decision-making and feelings.

3.

Face-to-face conversations with friends can lead to creative thinking.

Take risks

Don’t let fear hold you back. You won’t succeed at everything you try. But with each new effort, you will build self-confidence and develop new skills for the future.

Limit your amusement

Everyone enjoys entertainment. 4.. Literature and audiobooks are better forms of amusement because they force you to use your imagination.

Look for inspiration

Activities such as listening to music, going to museums and travelling all provide sources of inspiration.

Go offline and go outside

Remember how much fun you had as a child running, playing and pretending? Your imagination simply ran away with you. 5., and can help you get back some of that creative energy from your childhood.

A.Get social

B.Make friends

C.Nature settings fire the imagination

D.In fact, letting your mind run briefly can actually be helpful

E.Reading relaxes the mind and encourages you to use your imagination

F.Sometimes I can just sit down at my computer and the words just flow

G.But watching TV, for instance, requires little thought and can actually decrease creativity

There were many beautiful buildings in ancient Rome, but the living conditions for ordinary people were bad. Most of their homes were so poorly made that they fell down or were fire hazards (danger) with their steep, narrow wooden stairways. Most people were packed into apartment buildings that rose shakily (unsafely) six to twelve floors above the ground.     Kwame Alexander is a best-selling author of 24 books. His novel in verse (诗体) The Crossover won the Newbery Medal in 2015, and was followed by another verse novel in 2016, Booked. In the just-released The Playbook: 52 Rules to Aim, Shoot, and Score in This Game Called Life, Alexander aims to inspire readers to dream big and reach for their goals.

Time For Kids:

What can you tell us about The Playbook?

Kwame Alexander:

I wanted to write a book about how important it is to persevere (坚持) and accept the challenges that come, because they only make you stronger. And I wanted to do it in a really cool and fun way, using sports as a metaphor (隐喻), so students would be interested in reading a book that is telling them how to make their lives better.

TFK:

Where did you get the idea for the book?

Alexander:

In The Crossover, the father of the main characters, Josh and Jordan, gives them these rules for life, called Basketball Rules. Well, I was having breakfast with a friend of mine in New York City. He said, “Kwame, I love those Basketball Rules you have in The Crossover. You should think about writing a whole book on those.” That’s where it all began.

TFK:

Is it hard to mix sports and poetry (诗歌)?

Alexander:

I love sports, and I’ve been writing poetry since I was a kid. So those two things are as natural to me as breathing, laughing and walking.

TFK:

You’ve said teachers need to make learning poetry fun. Did you have a teacher like this as a kid?

Alexander:

My mom. She read poetry to my sisters and me when I was a kid, and she would make the words jump off the page!

TFK:

What advice would you give to young writers?

Alexander:

Read everything you can get your hands on. The best way to become a good writer is to read what other people have written.

How to make friends at a new school

Starting with a new school can be difficult. Everything seems to be different, and you don’t even know where to go for your own classes. 1. However, if you use these skills, you can quickly turn some of those strangers into friends.

Be yourself.

2. If some people don’t accept you, they’re not the kind of friends you need. People often stay together because they have similar interests. For example, someone who does a lot of sport may make friends with those who also run or swim a lot.

3.

Remember to be nice to the people you meet at your new school. If you think that you will say something that may make them feel sad, do not say anything and just nod your head if they talk to you. Also, remember to be as helpful as possible!

Believe in yourself.

A smile goes a long way. When you walk in the halls, don’t keep your eyes on the floor. Raise your head and make eye contact(目光接触) with other people. 4. Introduce yourself. Tell them your name and where you’re from.

Remember people’s names.

You like it when people use your name, and so do other people. 5. Besides, ask them in a kind way if they have a nickname(昵称). You’d be surprised how often this might come in handy.

A. People may become angry if you just begin by saying “Hey” each time.

B. Be friendly to others.

C. Join afterschool activities you like.

D. Making new friends can be hard, too.

E. Don’t sit at the back of the classroom where other people don’t notice you!

F. If you see someone you know, smile or say “Hi”.

G. Never change who you are to try and fit in.

Now that newsrooms(新闻编辑室) are becoming less popular in the US,young people have begun to tell their own stories.

GlobalGirl Media,an organization that teaches teenage girls digital(数码的) storytelling skills for free, was started by award-winning filmmakers Amie Williams and Meena Nanji in Los Angeles in 2010.

“By giving girls a voice, you introduce a different story, and change the existing one,”said Danny Glover,a member of the GlobalGirl Media organization.

“When the camera’s in my hands,I feel like I can’t lose,”Said Cheyenne Grisez,14.“It makes me happy and I feel like I can do anything.”

When I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city. We lived on a farm and in the winter especially, we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital. However, I soon discovered that city life has its problems too.

One big disadvantage is money—It costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution. I suffer from asthma(哮喘), and at times the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of traveling round. Although I have a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.

Of course there are advantages. First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever your tastes in culture or entertainment. Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprisingand , what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.

Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is , when you are in your teens(十几岁)or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable. I certainly hope to move back there soon.

1.What was the writer always thinking about when he was a child?

A.Staying on the farm. B.Moving to the countryside.

C.Leaving home for the city. D.Running away from the school.

3.In the passage, the writer tries to __________.

A.express his opinions about way of life B.describe his life in the countryside

C.show an interest in the outside world D.persuade the reader to live in the city

Mother's Gift

I grew up in a small town when the primary school was a ten-minute walk from my house. When the noon bell rang, I would race breathlessly home. My mother would be standing at the top of the stairs, smiling down at me.

One lunch-time when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed my lines so hard with me. But no matter how easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator's (旁白的) part to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her words, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.

I didn't tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.

It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine (藤蔓) was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass in bunch, as if a painter had touched our landscape with gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. ''I think I'm going to dig up all these weeds,'' she said, ''pulling it up by its roots. From now on, we'll have only roses in this garden.''

''But I like dandelions,'' I protested. ''All flowers are beautiful---even dandelions.''

My mother looked at me seriously. ''Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn't it? '' She asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. ''And that is true of people too,'' she added. ''Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.'' Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled.

E-waste is fast becoming a serious global problem. 1.

The source of e-waste

We live in a society that constantly produces and consumes electronic products. It is often cheaper to buy new pieces of equipment than to repair old ones. Also, through clever advertising, companies persuade consumers to replace their old TVs, mobile phones and computers for the latest models. E-waste is created when we throw away electronic equipment like this. In the EU alone, about 8.7 million tonnes of e-waste is produced each year. 2.

The problem with e-waste

Burying e-waste in landfills or burning it causes serious problems for the environment. 3. These substances can then leak into the ground in landfills or pollute the air when they are burnt.

Global recycling schemes (计划)

4. However, their schemes are not always managed properly and sometimes electronics are just sent to poor countries such as Ghana. Here they are often burnt in public areas, which is very bad for people’s health. Setting up recycling programs in the countries that create e-waste could solve this problem. E-cycling centres could recycle the parts that we can reuse and properly dispose of the rest.

Take-back policy

Another solution to e-waste is to make manufacturers responsible for their used products. This could mean forcing them to take back old products which are no longer wanted. 5.

Consuming less

We can all reduce the amount of waste we produce by buying electrical products only when we have to.

A.In recent years, many countries have started recycling e-waste.

B.They should then make sure they are properly recycled or reused.

C.Sadly, just over one million tonnes is recycled.

D.This report will examine this problem and provide some possible solutions.

E.By resisting the temptation to buy a product just to have the latest version, we cut down on e-waste.

F.Electronics contain dangerous chemicals and metals.

G.Both manufacturers and consumers must accept their responsibilities and make efforts to keep it to a minimum.

What exactly is intelligence? There aren’t any easy answers. Despite the progress that has been made in genetics and psychology, human intelligence has remained one of the most controversial areas of modern scienceuntil now, that is, for the discovery of a gene(基因) linked to intelligence has made the experts think again.

Robert Plomin of the Institute of Psychiatry in London and his colleagues in the US have been looking into genetic make-up. From their research, they have discovered that a slightly different gene is more common in those with a high IQ. Plomin analyzed DNA from two groups of 51 children aged between 6 and 15. What he found was that the first group had an IQ of 136, putting them in the top 5% of the population, while the other group had an average IQ of 103. An analysis of their genes showed that 32% of children in the higher group had the gene in question, while only 16% in the second group did. However, there is a lot more research to be done, and Plomin himself is cautious at this early stage. He suggests that there are probably many genes that contribute to intelligence, rather than just one.

Several studies have shown a strong link between IQ and career success, although some psychologists remain unconvinced about this. Professor Michael Rowe, who has written a book called Genius Explained, is one of these. “The people with the highest IQs are not usually the ones who do best in their careers.”

Many psychologists now believe that when it comes to intelligence, IQ isn’t everything. Many alternative views have been put forward recently. One example is the idea of multiple intelligences, which was developed in the 1980s by Harvard psychologist Howard Gardner. This offers a much broader view than the IQ theory, including creativity and communication skills as relevant factors(因素) in intelligence.

Tony Buzan, brain expert and author of Master your Memory, is enthusiastic about this belief, arguing that true geniuses(天才) do indeed appear to combine high levels of each type of intelligence. He lists Alexander the Great, Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein as examples. At the same time, Buzan believes that everyone can develop their intelligence, only if they take the trouble to exercise their brain. Perhaps there’s hope for us all!

Petrol and diesel cars may still dominate our roads, but their days are numbered. A recent university study found that current electric cars could be used for 87 per cent of daily car journeys in the US. That figure could rise to 98 per cent by 2020.

One hurdle to the widespread adoption of electric cars has been ‘range anxiety’--- drivers' concerns about running out of juice on a journey. While petrol stations are conveniently located across national road systems, the necessary network of electric charging stations is still being developed. That said, charging points are becoming increasingly common throughout the USA.

Attitudes towards electric vehicles have changed quite considerably over the last few years. Not that long ago, electric cars were met with distrust, and their large price tags drove customers away. Thanks to improvements in battery capacity, recharging times, performance and price, the current generation of electric cars are starting to persuade critics. Plug-in cars will soon give internal combustion engine models a run for their money.

As well as advancements on the road, electric vehicles are taking to the seas and skies. Electric boats are among the oldest methods of electric travel, having enjoyed several decades of popularity from the late 19th to the early 20th century before petrol-powered outboard motors took over. Now, the global drive for renewable energy sources is bringing electric boats back. Steps towards electric air travel are also being made, with Airbus and NASA among the organizations developing and testing battery powered planes. The experiments could soon make commercial electric flight a reality.

Electric vehicles do not produce any emissions. Were the US to act on the study's findings and replace 87 per cent of its cars with electric vehicles, it would reduce the national demand for petrol by 61 per cent. However, because of the production processes and the generation of electricity required to charge these vehicles, they cannot claim to be completely emission-free. That said, as many countries continue to increase their use of renewable energy sources, electric vehicles will become even cleaner.

1.Which is the best title for this passage?

C. To show why more people have interest in electric cars.

D. To describe different ways electric vehicles can be used.

Mr.Selfridge, the Wisconsin-born retailer (零售商) who left school at 14, rose to become a partner in Marshall Field’s, Chicago. Founded in 1852, it was one of the first and most ambitious US department stores. Mr.Selfridge had done well with Marshall Field’s. He liked to say, “The customer is always right,” which made the Chicago store popular. And he is believed to have invented the phrase “Only (so many) Shopping Days until Christmas”.

When he visited London on holiday in 1906 he was surprised to find most of the city’s department stores were no match of their American and Parisian competitors. This led Selfridge to leave the US and establish Selfridges, a department store named after him, at the west end of London’s Oxford Street. In Oxford Street, Selfridge’s design team shaped an ambitious classical palace building with a wall of plate glass windows.

Opened in 1909, Selfridges offered customers a hundred departments along with restaurants, a roof garden, reading and writing rooms, reception areas for foreign visitors, a first aid room and most importantly, a small army of knowledgeable floor-walking assistants who served as guides as well as being thoroughly instructed in the art of making a sale.

Mr.Selfridge did much to make the department store a destination rather than just a big and comprehensively stocked city shop. It became a place to meet and for ladies to lunch. Mr.Selfridge later introduced the department store as a key element of the 20th Century culture, and Chaplin acknowledged the growing trend for shopping in the department store in his film The Floorwalker.

1.What can be learned about Mr.Selfridge from Paragraph 1?

A.He was well-educated. B.He was a modest man.

C.He was a gifted businessman. D.He was dishonest.

2.What was Selfridges’ most impressive characteristic?

A.The broad choice of goods. B.The large number of departments.

C.The small group of guards. D.The well-trained sales guides.

3.What is the main purpose of the article?

A.To encourage shoppers to spend more. B.To introduce the history of Selfridges.

C.To compare different department stores. D.To explain how to start a department store.
