Twenty years ago I drove a taxi for a living One night I went to pick up a passenger at 230 a m When I arrived to collect her I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window

I walked to the door and knocked "Just a minute" answered a weak elderly voice

After a long time the door opened A small woman in her eighties stood before me By her side was a small suitcase

I took the suitcase to the car and then returned to help the woman She took my arm and we walked slowly towards the car

She kept thanking me for my kindness "It's nothing" I told her "I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated"

"Oh you're such a good man" She said When we got into the taxi she gave me an address and then asked "Could you drive through downtown"

"It's not the shortest way" I answered quickly

"Oh I'm in no hurry" she said "I'm on my way to a hospice  (临终医院). I don't have any family left The doctor says I don't have very long "

I quietly reached over and shut off the meter (计价器). For the next two hours we drove through the city She showed me the building where she had once worked the neighborhood where she had lived and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl

Sometimes she'd ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness saying nothing

At dawn she suddenly said "I'm tired Let's go now" We drove in silence to the address she had given

"How much do I owe you" she asked

"Nothing" I said

"You have to make a living" she answered "Oh there are other passengers" I answered She said thanks to me but she looked so sad

One of the most popular street food found in China is no doubt the barbecue. A new program, called Chinese Barbecue, tells the story of this popular food cooked over hot coals on just about every street corner in cities and towns across the country. Barbecued meat is an important part of people’s nightlife.

Shown on June 20, the program has had more than 25 million clicks on the video site bilibili.com. To find the most popular barbecue stalls (摊位), the production team travelled to more than 500 locations in 30 cities across the country. Some viewers compare Chinese Barbecue to Midnight Diner, a Japanese TV program telling stories from late night informal Japanese bars.

“I’m happy to hear this comparison because Midnight Diner is a good program, and we share the same topic― night food,” Chinese Barbecue’s director Chen Yingjie said. “However, they are quite different.” He said that Midnight Diner focused more on food itself, though there was some conversation while people were eating. However, the night food scene of Chinese people means joy and a more lively atmosphere. People eating these barbecue snacks develop a feeling of connection, which can be a cure for loneliness.

The barbecue, regarded as the most ordinary and common night street snack, is different from home-made food by mothers as that is a symbol of family and kinship. The barbecue is where you go to become connected to people in society. And unlike official business lunches, during which people are rather polite, the barbecue lets people relax with old friends and new friends, leaving a lasting impression of friendship.

The world, as a whole, holds deep-rooted good feelings toward the barbecue, either for the taste or the warmth produced by fire. “What we should do is to present the Chinese barbecue just the way it is because with its special ingredients(食材)ways of cooking and more importantly, the special environment and people, the world will recognize it and might fall in love with it just as we do.” said Chen.

1.What do we know about Chinese Barbecue?

A.It has been becoming very popular on the Internet.

B.It is thought highly of by most of the foreign tourists.

C.It mainly talks about the most famous Chinese food.

D.It shows the colorful nightlife in large cities of China.

2.In which way was Chinese Barbecue different from Midnight Diner?

A.It showed more kinds of food. B.It focused more on the diners.

C.It showed the eating habits. D.It was less popular than Midnight Diner.

3.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.The importance of the barbecue to family. B.The influence of the barbecue on people’s manners.

C.The influence of the barbecue on people’s lifestyle. D.The role of the barbecue in people’s relationship.

4.Why did Chen Yingjie choose the barbecue as the topic of the series?

A.To show the feature of Chinese food. B.To research a special way of cooking.

C.To help the world understand China. D.To introduce the history of the barbecue.

While it is impossible to prevent stress as well as reduce its effect when it can’t be avoided. The US Department of Health and Human Services offers the following suggestions for ways to deal with stress.

•Try physical activities

When you are nervous, angry or upset, try releasing the pressure through exercise or physical activities. 1.

•Take care of yourself.

You should make every effort to eat well and get enough rest. If you easily get angry and cannot sleep well enough, or if you're not eating properly, it will be more likely that you will fall into situations of stress. 2.

•Make time for yourself.

3.Don't forget, play can be just as important as work. You need a break from your daily routine to just relax and have fun. Go window-shopping or work on a hobby. Allow yourself at least half an hour each day to do something you enjoy.

4.

Stress can result from disorganization and a feeling that "there's so much to do, and not enough time. " Trying to take care of everything at once can be too much for you and, as a result, you may not achieve anything. Instead, make a list of everything you have to do. Set out to do the most important tasks first. Then do one thing at a time.5.

A.Bear in the most important task.

B.Schedule time for both work and play.

C.Check off each task as it is completed.

D.Make a list of the things you need to do.

E.For example, you could take your job as your hobby.

F.If stress repeatedly keeps you from sleeping, you should consult a doctor.

G.Running, walking, or playing tennis are just some of the activities you might try.

As humanity has got richer, animal’s roles have changed. People need their services less than before. Fewer wolves and thieves meant less demand for dogs for protection; the internal combustion engine(内燃机)made horses unneeded; modern sanitation(卫生设备)kept rats in check and made cats less useful. No longer necessities, domestic animals became luxuries. Pet-keeping seems to kick in when household incomes rise above roughly $5,000. It is booming.

The trend is not a new one. Archaeologists(考古学家)have found 10,000-year-old graves in which dogs and people are buried together. Some cultures -- such as in Scandinavia, where dogs have long been both working dogs and companions -- have kept pets for thousands of years. But these days the pet-keeping urge has spread even to parts of the world which have no tradition of sinking into a comfortable chair with a furry creature.

The pet business is growing even faster than pet numbers, because people are spending more and more money on them. No longer are they food - waste - recyclers, fed with the remains that fall from their masters’ tables. Pet - food shelves are full of delicacies crafted to satisfy a range of appetites, including ice cream for dogs and foods for pets that are old, diabetic or suffer from sensitive digestion; a number of internet services offer food, tailored to the pet’s individual tastes.

In the business this is called “pet humanisation” -- the tendency of pet owners to treat their pets as part of the family. This is evident in the names given to dogs, which have evolved from Fido, Rex and Spot to -- in America -- Bella, Lucy and Max. It is evident in the growing market for pet clothing, pet grooming and pet hotels.

People still assume that pets must be working for humanity in some way, perhaps making people healthier or less anxious. But the evidence for that is weak. Rather, new research suggests that dogs have evolved those irresistible “puppy - dog eyes” precisely to affect human emotions. It has worked. The species that once enslaved others now works very hard to pay for the care of its pets. Sentimental(多愁善感的)Americans often refer to themselves not as cat-owners but as the cat’s “mommy” or “daddy”. South Koreans go one further, describing themselves as cat “butlers”. Watch an unlucky dog-walker trailing “his” hound(猎犬), plastic bag in hand to pick up its mess, and you have to wonder: who’s in charge now?

1.Which of the following trends is NOT TRUE according to the passage?

A.People’s needs for animal services are decreasing.

B.Both the pet number and the pet business are growing.

C.Pets are increasingly making their owners less anxious.

D.Pet foods are more various and customized than before.

2.Which of the following is referred to as evidence of “pet humanization?”

A.The names given to pets in American families nowadays.

B.Pet’s inbuilt ability to affect emotions of their owners.

C.Human beings ever rising urge for pet-keeping.

D.Pet’s roles as both working staff and companions.

3.Which of the following statements is the author most likely to agree with?

A.Pets should be treated as equals of their human masters.

B.Human beings are getting much benefit from their pets.

C.Pet-keeping is still restricted within certain parts of the world.

D.Some pet owners spend too much money on their pets.

4.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?

A.The Changing Roles of Animals B.The Urge for Pet-keeping

C.Who Owns Whom D.Love Me, Love My Dog

William I, who conquered England some 930 years ago, had wealth, power and an army. Yet although William was very rich by the standard of his time, he had nothing like a flush toilet(抽水马桶)or riding lawn mower(除草机). How did he get by ?

History books are filled with wealthy people who were poor compared to me. I have storm windows, Croesus did not. Entire nations trembled before Alexander the Great, but he couldn,t buy cat food. Czar Nicholas lacked an electric saw.

Given how much better off I am than so many famous dead people, you,d think I,d be content. The trouble is that, like most people, I compare my wealth with that of living persons: neighbors, school classmates, famous TV people. The greed I feel toward my friend Howard,s new kitchen is not reduced by the fact no kings ever had a refrigerator with glass doors.’

There is really no rising or falling standard of living. Over the centuries people simply find different things to feel sad about. You,d think that simply not having disease would put us in a good mood, but no, we want a hot bath too.

Of course, one way to achieve happiness would be to realize that even by today,s standards the things I own are pretty nice. My house is smaller than the houses of many investments bankers, but even so it has a lot more rooms than my wife and I can keep clean.

Besides, to people looking back at our era from a century or two in the future, these bankers, fancy counter tops and my own worn Formica will seem equally shabby. I can,t keep up with my neighbors right now. But just wait.

1.What does the underlined phrase “get by” in the first paragraph mean ?

A.Succeed as a king. B.Deal with complaints.

C.Live in s satisfactory way. D.Get some extra money.

2.How many historical figures are mentioned to compare lives in the past and present ?

A.3. B.4.

C.5 D.6

3.According to the passage, the author. intends to        .

A.tell us to be content with life

B.warn us to live in a simple way

C.teach us to learn lessons from life

D.encourage us to struggle for wealth

4.What,s the author,s attitude towards life ?

A.Doubtful. B.Optimistic.

C.Uncaring. D.Cautious.

My school appeared on the news last week because we had made an important change in our local area. Our class had planted a large garden in what was once only a vacant lot. It was a lot of work but it was all worth it. I got blisters(水泡) from digging, and we all got insect bites, too.

I learned a lot about gardening and collaboration(合作), and then I learned about the media. Our teacher telephoned the TV station and informed them of what we had accomplished. She spoke with the producer. The producer checked with the directors, but they said there were plenty of stories similar to ours. They wanted to know what was special about our particular garden, since many schools plant them.

The teacher explained that, after going on the Internet to learn about the prairie(大草原), we had made a prairie garden. We had gone to a prairie and gotten seeds from the plants, and then we planted them. We did not water the garden, but we did weed it. We decided to let nature water it with rain, since that was how prairies grew in the past. We sent a picture of the garden to the news station. In the picture, the grass was so high that it stood taller than the fourth grade students.

As a result, the producer sent a reporter to our school. He interviewed the headmaster and asked him many questions about the garden. After that, they interviewed us, and we explained to them what we had learned through this project.

That night, we watched the news, and there we were. The news reporter told our story. It was only two minutes long, but it was us. We were famous. All that work, all those blisters, it was worth it. We knew that when we saw the garden every day, but now we knew that the whole city thought so, too.

1.What seemed to be the TV directors’ initial reaction to the garden?

A.They were excited. B.They were surprised.

C.They were worried. D.They were uninterested.

2.What is special about the garden?

A.Weeds were allowed to spread naturally.

B.The grass grew faster than common grass.

C.The seeds came from the plants of a prairie.

D.Underground water was used for the plants.

3.What does the underlined word “that” refer to in the last paragraph?

A.We got blisters on our hands. B.Our hard work was worthwhile.

C.The garden would be famous. D.The project would be finished.

4.How did the author feel about the project?

A.Annoyed. B.Curious. C.Proud. D.Regretful.

Pick a race

Having a race on your calendar (日历) is a motivation(动机) to keep running during the holiday. 2. Check our active.com or Running in the City for events near you.

Don't skip breakfast

If you're going to a holiday party in the evening, don't make the mistake of skipping breakfast. You may think you're saving calories for later. 3.

Bring your own healthy dishes

4.

If you're heading to an evening event, eat regular(规律的) meals and snacks every few hours up until party time. You won't arrive at the party ready to attack appetizers. Make sure you include fiber at each meal because it keeps you full longer.

Plan your runs

It's easy to say that you'll keep running regularly during the holiday season, but sticking to it requires a strategy. Schedule your runs like appointments, so you make them the first thing during a busy week. 5.

Winter begins in the north on December 22nd. People and animals have been doing what they always do to prepare for the colder months. Squirrels (松鼠), for example, have been busy gathering nuts from trees. Well, scientists have been busy gathering information about what the squirrels do with the food they collect.

They examined differences between red squirrels and gray squirrels in the American state of Indiana. The scientists wanted to know how these differences could affect the growth of black walnut (黑胡桃) trees. The black walnut is the nut of choice for both kinds of squirrels. The black walnut tree is also a central part of some hardwood forests.

Rob Swihart of Purdue University did the study with Jake Goheen, a former Purdue student now at the University of New Mexico. The two researchers estimate that several times as many walnuts grow when gathered by gray squirrels as compared to red squirrels. Gray squirrels and red squirrels do not store nuts and seeds in the same way. Gray squirrels bury nuts one at a time in a number of places. But they seldom remember where they buried every nut. So some nuts remain in the ground. Conditions are right for them to develop and grow the following spring. Red squirrels, however, store large groups of nuts above ground. Professor Swihart calls “death traps for seeds”.

Gray squirrels are native to Indiana. But Professor Swihart says their numbers began to decrease as more forests were cut for agriculture. Red squirrels began to spread through the state during the past century.

The researchers say red squirrels are native to forests that stay green all year, unlike walnut trees. They say the cleaning of forest land for agriculture has helped red squirrels invade Indiana. Jake Goheen calls them a sign of an environmental problem more than a cause.

1.The study done by Rob Swihart and Jake Goheen is to ________.

A.find out the living conditions for squirrels

B.learn squirrels’ influence on black walnut trees

C.do something to get rid of squirrels

2.The difference between gray squirrels and red squirrels mainly lies in ________.

A.the way they gather the walnut

B.the time they have winter sleep

C.the place they have winter sleep

D.the place they store the walnuts

3.When Professor Swihart says “death traps for seeds”, he actually means that ________.

A.red squirrels eat more nuts than gray squirrels

B.gray squirrels and red squirrels will have severe fights

C.nuts above the ground will not develop into plants

D.seeds can be traps for other animals in the forest

4.According to the passage, which of the following is true?

A.The black walnut is equally attractive to both gray and red squirrels.

B.Gray squirrels do more harm to the forest than red squirrels.

C.Red squirrels and gray squirrels have helped the spread of walnut trees.

D.The cleaning of forest land benefits red squirrels directly.

I don’t realize that I’ve been at college for nearly one and half year until now. Looking back into the last year, what shall I say? It consisted of both happiness and sadness. Life always goes like this, up and down, as is so exciting. Now when I recall the past, no matter how I felt at that time, they are all treasures for me.

That was the moon festival last year, which was also the first time we went out after we entered the college. It was said that the sea in Dalian was well-known and was also a wonderful place to watch the moon. After getting all the food and drinking ready, we four girls set off for the seaside. There were many people and we picked up a less crowded beach. At first, we enjoyed ourselves by drinking and eating. When the moon turned brighter, we played with the seawater. As a result, we were all drenched with water. Bathing in the moonlight, we ran and laughed. We seemed to land on another world, where was full of fresh air, laughter and love. The laughter is still echoing(回响) on my mind so far.

Life doesn’t stay the same, occasionally having a particular taste. That is sadness. What impressed me deeply is a failure in a singing competition. It was the first time I had given a performance on such a large stage in front of so many people. I was so nervous that the whole song was performed out of tune. As you could imagine, I was greeted with boos from the audience. I still remembered how dismal I felt that moment and I sat alone crying at the seaside. After that, I talked to mother about it. She told me that it was not a failure; at least, I was brave enough to show myself publicly.

Everything has passed. I’ve stored them at the bottom of my heart. I am in the second grade already. Yet much needs me to challenge. On the way, there's both happiness and distress. However, I will go ahead just all the same.

1.The author of the text is ______.

A.a boy B.a girl

C.the passage doesn’t say D.none of the above

2.The underlined word “drenched” in the second paragraph has a similar meaning with ______.

A.dried B.wet

C.frozen D.washed away

3.Life, according to the author, is ______.

A.full of happiness B.filled with sadness

C.made up of laughter and tears D.not worth living

4.How did the audience find the author’s singing?

A.It was wonderful B.It was disappointing

C.The passage doesn’t say D.It was perfect

5.Which of the following shows the author’s attitude towards future?

A.A friend in need is a friend indeed.

B.Do wrong once and you’ll never hear the end of it.

C.Where there is a will, there is a way.

D.Time and tide wait for no man.

Life in the Internet age is lonely—or is it? That's what experts in human interaction(交往)are debating(争论) after a new Stanford University survey has been published.

According to the study, the more time people spend online, the less they can spare for reallife relationships with family and friends. The researchers asked 113 people about the Web's influence on daily activities. 36% of those people are online for more than five hours a week. "As Internet use becomes more widespread, it will have an increasingly isolating(孤立的) effect on society," says Robert Kraut, one of the researchers.

Scholars (学者)and Web lovers criticized(批评)the study for stretching its data to make the "isolating" point. While 13% of regular Web users admitted the loss of time with loved ones, 60% reported watching less TV. The survey also shows that email is the most popular online activity. If some of webheads(网虫) spend what was once passive TV time keeping company with friends via emails, "that's a move towards greater connectedness," says Paul Resnick, a professor at the University of Michigan.

This isn't the first claim that the Web should be criticized. A 1998 report monitored 73 Pittsburgh-area families' Net use for a year. People who used the Internet more "talked less to family members and reported being lonelier and more depressed," says Robert Kraut.

"It's true that there have been big declines in social connectedness over the past decades, but those declines began before the Internet was invented," says Thomas Putnam.

As Amitay Etzioni says, the Internet gives us a different kind of social life—not better or worse than before, but just different.

1.Who claimed that the Web had negative influence?

A.Robert Kraut. B.Paul Resnick.

C.Thomas Putnam. D.Amitay Etzioni.

2.The underlined word "This" in Para. 4 refers to _______.

A.the study conducted by Stanford University

B.the survey made by the University of Michigan

3.From the passage we learn that _______.

A.watching TV used to take time away from staying online

B.36 % of Web users spend more than five hours a week online

C.the Web was blamed more than once for causing an isolating effect

D.the Web has the same influence as telephones and televisions

The crowd at the airport moved forward like waves. The passengers had been waiting for a couple of hours for an airline employee to open the door leading to the plane outside. No one was in a good mood. An old man got trapped in the middle of the rush. Suddenly, he fell down, his head hitting the concrete floor, with blood gushing from his forehead. He appeared to be unconscious. Everyone rushed past him, except for Dana. She called for help.

A minute later, a young airline employee showed up. Hardly looking at the old man, she told Dana to get aboard her plane. She said the old man would be okay, and walked away.

Dana screamed for help. An airport supervisor appeared. He told Dana to get on the plane. Dana said that she was not moving until an ambulance arrived. The supervisor said her plane would leave without her. Dana said that she didn’t care.

An ambulance and two doctors finally arrived. The paramedics said that the man would be okay, but he would need stitches(缝线). They put him into the ambulance and drove off.

On her way out to the plane, which was still refueling, Dana saw the employee who had ignored the old man. The employee said, “You’re lucky the plane didn’t leave without you.”

“The plane?” Dana asked. “Who cares about the plane? How could you be so cold? That was an old man; he could have been your grandfather! How would you like it if everyone just stepped over your grandfather and went on their way?”
