Johannes Gutenberg was chosen to be the most important figure of the past millennium(千年)by the media. You may not be familiar with him.1.Gutenberg is praised for having invented the printing press and therefore preparing the way for printing books.

4.Between 1450 and 1455,while preparing to produce a large Latin Bible,Gutenberg is thought to have printed a number of smaller books,a calendar, and so on.The Bible of 42 Lines, the oldest surviving printed book in the Western world, was completed by August 15,1456.

People diet to look more attractive. Fish diet to avoid being beaten up, thrown out of their social group, and getting eaten as a result. That is the fascinating conclusion of the latest research into fish behavior by a team of Australian scientists.

The research team has discovered that subordinate (隶属的)fish voluntarily diet to avoid challenging their larger competitors. “In studying gobies we noticed that only the largest two individuals, a male and female, had breeding(繁殖) rights within the group, ”explains Marian Wong. “All other group members are non-breeding females, each being 5–10% smaller than its next largest competitor. We wanted to find out how they keep this size separation.”

The reason for the size difference was easy to see. Once a subordinate fish grows to within 5–10% of the size of its larger competitor, it causes a fight which usually ends in the smaller goby being driven away from the group. More often than not, the evicted fish is then eaten up.

It appeared that the smaller fish were keeping themselves small in order to avoid challenging the boss fish. Whether they did so voluntarilyby limiting how much they ate, was not clear. The research team decided to do an experiment. They tried to fatten up some of the subordinate gobies to see what happened. To their surprisethe gobies simply refused the extra food they were offeredclearly preferring to remain small and avoid fights, over having a feast.

The discovery challenges the traditional scientific view of how boss individuals keep their position in a group. Previously it was thought that large individuals simply used their weight and size to threaten their subordinates and take more of the food for themselves, so keeping their competitors small.

While the habits of gobies may seem a little mysterious, Dr. Wong explains that understanding the relationships between boss and subordinate animals is important to understanding how hierarchical (等级的) societies remain stable.

The research has proved the fact that voluntary dieting is a habit far from exclusive(排他的) to humans. “As yet, we lack a complete understanding of how widespread the voluntary reduction of food intake is in nature,” the researchers comment. “Data on human dieting suggests that, while humans generally diet to improve health or increase attractiveness, rarely does it improve long term health and males regularly prefer females that are fatter than the females’ own ideal.”

1.When a goby grows to within 5–10% of the size of its larger competitor, it_______.

A.faces danger B.has breeding rights

C.eats its competitor D.leaves the group itself

2.The underlined words “the evicted fish” in Paragraph 3 refer to _______.

A.the fish beaten up B.the fish found out

C.the fish fattened up D.the fish driven away

3.The experiment showed that the smaller fish_______.

A.fought over a feast B.went on diet willingly

C.preferred some extra food D.challenged the boss fish

4.What is the text mainly about?

A.Fish dieting and human dieting. B.Dieting and health.

C.Human dieting. D.Fish dieting.

When women sit together to watch a movie on TV, they usually talk simultaneously(同时的)about a variety of subjects, including children, men, careers and what' s happening in their lives. When groups of men and women watch a movie together, the men usually end up telling the women to shut up. Men can either talk or watch the screen -- they can' t do both -- and they don' t understand that women can. Besides, women consider that the point of all getting together is to have a good time and develop relationships -- not just to sit there like couch potatoes staring at the screen.

During the ad breaks, a man often asks a woman to explain the plot and tell him where the relationship between the characters is going. He is unable, unlike women, to read the subtle body language signals that reveal how the characters are feeling emotionally. Since women originally spent their days with the other women and children in the group, they developed the ability to communicate successfully in order to maintain relationships. For a woman, speech continues to have such a clear purpose: to build relationships and make friends. For men, to talk is to relate the facts.

Men see the telephone as a communication tool for sending facts and information to other people, but a woman sees it as a means of bonding. A woman can spend two weeks on vacation with her girlfriend and, when she returns home, telephone the same girlfriend and talk for another two hours.

There is no convincing evidence that social conditioning, the fact that girls' mothers talked them more, is the reason why girls talk more than boys. Psychiatrist Dr Michael Lewis, author of Social Behaviour and Language Acquisition, conducted experiments that found mothers talked  to and looked at, baby girls more often than baby boys. Scientific evidence shows parents respond to the brain bias of their children. Since a girl’s brain is better organized to send and receive speechwe therefore talk to them more. Consequently, mothers who try to talk to their sons are usually pointed to receive only short grunts in reply.

1.While watching TV with others, women Usually talk a lot because they

A.are afraid of awkward silence with their families and friends

B.can both talk and watch the screen at the Same time

C.think they can have a good time and develop relationships

A.experience the happy time again B.keep a close tie with her

C.recommend her a new scenic spot D.remind her of something forgotten

3.What does the author want to tell us most?

A.Women' s brains are better organized for language and communication

B.Women love to talk because they are more sociable than men.

C.Men do not like talking because they rely more on facts.

D.Social conditioning is not the reason why women love talking.

4.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.Women Are Socially Trained to Talk B.Talking Maintains Relationships

C.Women Love to Talk D.Men Talk Differently from Women

What makes a gift special? Is it the price you see on the gift receipt? Or is it the look on the recipient's face when they receive it that determines the true value? What gift is worth the most?

This Christmas I was debating what to give my father. My dad is a hard person to buy for because he never wants anything. I pulled out my phone to read a text message from my mom saying that we were leaving for Christmas shopping for him when I came across a message on my phone that I had locked. The message was from my father. My eyes fell on a photo of a flower taken in Wyoming, and underneath a poem by William Blake. The flower, a lone dandelion standing against the bright blue sky, inspired me. My dad had been reciting those words to me since I was a kid. That may even be the reason why I love writing. I decided that those words would be my gift to my father.

I called back. I told my mom to go without me and that I already created my gift. I sent the photo of the cream-colored flower to my computer and typed the poem on top of it. As I was arranging the details another poem came to mind. The poem was written by Edgar Allan Poe; my dad recited it as much as he did the other. I typed that out as well and searched online for a background to the words of it. The poem was focused around dreaming, and after searching I found the perfect picture. The image was painted with blues and greens and purples, twisting together to create the theme and wonder of a dream. As I watched both poems passing through the printer, the white paper coloring with words that shaped my childhood. I felt that this was a gift that my father would truly appreciate.

Christmas soon arrived. The minute I saw the look on my dad's face as he unwrapped those swirling black letters carefully placed in a cheap frame, I knew I had given the perfect gift.

1.The idea for a special gift began to form when the author was______.

A.doing shopping B.having a debate

2.The author's inspiration for the gift came from_____.

A.a photo of a flower B.a story about a kid

C.a call from the mother D.a text about Christmas

3.The author made the gift by_____.

A.searching for the poems online B.drawing the background by hand

C.painting the letters in three colors D.matching the words with pictures

4.What is the main purpose of the passage?

A.To show how to design images for gifts. B.To suggest making gifts from one's heart.

C.To explain how computers help create gifts. D.To describe the gifts the author has received

There is an English saying:“1.” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body.  2.

Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their hearts, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise.  3.  If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.

Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated(忍耐) the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program.4.

5. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.

A. Laughter is the best medicine.

B. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemicals in the brain which diminish both  stress and pain.

C. Although laughter helps cure the disease, doctors still can not put  this theory into clinic practice.

D. Laughter can prolong one's life.

E. As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics in which they help to improve their  patients' condition by encouraging them to laugh.

F. They have found that laughter really can improve people's health.

G. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing;it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach and even the feet.

Mr.Bean is an internationally recognized comedy character on TV and in films. He constantly gets into awkward and absurd situationswhich greatly amuses audiences regardless of their nationalities or culture. The humour is always made clear through a series of simple and funny acts that rely purely on body languagewhich is universal.

Sometimes people add to what they say even when they don't talk. Gestures are the “silent language” of every culture. We point a finger or move another part of the body to show what we want to say. It is important to know the body language of every country or we may be misunderstood.

In the United States, people greet each other with a handshake in a formal introduction. The handshake must be firm. If the handshake is weak, it is a sign of weakness or unfriendliness. Friends may place a hand on the other's arm or shoulder, some people, usually women, greet a friend with a hug.

Space is important to Americans. When two people talk to each other, they usually stand about two and a half feet away and at an angle, so they are not facing each other directly. Americans get uncomfortable when a person stands too close. They will move back to have their space. If Americans touch another person by accident, they say, “Pardon me.” or “Excuse me.” Americans like to look at the other person in the eyes when they are talking. If you don't do so, it means you are bored, hiding something, or are not interested. But when you stare at someone, it is not polite.

For Americans, thumbs-up; means yes, very good, or well done. Thumbs-down means the opposite. To call a waiter, raise one hand to head level or above. To show you want the check, make a movement with your hands as if you are singing a piece of paper. It is all right to point at things but not at people with the hand and index finger. Americans shake their index finger at children when they scold them and pat them on the head when they admire them.

Learning a culture's body language is sometimes confusing. If you don't know what to do, the safest thing to do is to smile.
