I like travelling and my dream of visiting Beijing, the capital city of our country, come true during the National Day holidays this year. My mother booked an one-day tour for me. On the morning of October 1st I went to Tian’anmen Square with one of my classmates , there we watched the flag-raising ceremony. As I watched the flag rising slowly, I sang the national anthem, feeling extreme proud. Several hours later, a grand military parade was held mark the People's Republic of China's 70th founding anniversary. In the afternoon we decided to go to other famous tourist attraction, like the Great Wall. When we reached the destination, it was crowded with tourists. I was glad for which those volunteers had done for little kids and elderly people . Standing on the Great wall, we couldn’t help admire the splendid scenery. This travelling, with doubt, meant a lot of to me.

How to Enjoy Life As a Teen

Maybe teens are not the best years of your life, but you should still learn to make the most of your high school days.1..

1. Learn to appreciate small things. Whether it's having a computer, having friends, having a family that loves you, or simply being born in this world, remember that the point of life is for you to enjoy it. 2. Remember these are the last few years you are able to enjoy yourself without having to worry about the responsibility of an adult, but make sure you prepare yourself for when you actually become an adult,

2. Choose your friends wisely. 3.Try to have friends that like you who you are, not just the things you have. These are people who shop at the same store as you; not someone who will sympathize with you when your dog dies.

3. Be sociable. Participating in clubs, activities, and sports increases your chances of meeting new friends.4. Participating gives you something to do instead of sitting bored at home and wallowing in self-pity.

4.5.. Video games, for example, are good if you're the type who can get into that kind of thing. You should also find a hobby that is meaningful or practical. Use your "hobby time" to start developing and uncovering passions.

5. Work at a job you can enjoy. Working is a great way to gain experience and to meet other people. Prior work experience will help you find a job more easily. If you can't find work, just volunteer or make your own job.

A.Small things may make a great difference to your life.

B.In fact, many of the "friends" you have when you are popular are not true friends.

C.Following are some tips for you.

D.You can pursue interests you enjoy.

E.Try to take part in various social activities.

F.While you only need 4 or 5 close friends, that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to meet new people.

G.Be happy and life will reward you.

Researchers in Australia have discovered an effective new method to capture the atmospheric carbon dioxide that is damaging our planet and transform it into something solid, making it much easier to store.

Carbon capture isn’t new, but previous methods call for the gas to be compressed into liquid and then injected underground. Widespread usage of that technology has been locked by economic and environmental concerns due to possible leaks. Instead, in a study published in Nature Communications, the group details their sustainable and cost-effective plan for transforming CO2 into coal.

This new process involves a liquid metal catalyst( 催化剂 )that is efficient in conducting electricity. CO2 gas is dissolved in a container with some liquid. Once electricity charge is introduced, the CO2 begins to turn into solid pieces of carbon, which can be collected and stored.

What makes this particularly unique is that the entire process can occur at room temperature. Previous experiments have only shown a gas to solid conversion at extremely high temperature, which made it impossible on a large scale. Now, the researchers are hoping that their work will be used to create even further when it comes to carbon storage.

In an interesting side benefit, the solid carbon also works as an electrode( ), which opens up a world of possibilities. “A side benefit of the process is that the carbon can hold electrical charge, becoming a super battery, so it could potentially be used as a part in future vehicles,” explains Dr. Dorna Estrafilzadeh, a researcher. “The process also produces fuel as a by-product, which could also have industrial applications.”

1.What can we know about the previous carbon capture methods?

A.People have to inject liquid to the gas.

B.The previous methods can be done easily.

C.The previous methods are not very popular.

D.People have widely accepted previous methods.

2.What is the special part of the new method?

A.It needs electricity to make the process efficient.

B.It can be done in any kind of container.

C.It doesn’t need extreme temperature.

D.It can produce much solid carbon.

3.What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.The method will make fossil oil disappear.

B.The method will influence the future industry.

C.The method will make developed countries more powerful.

D.The method will be used to make new vehicles.

4.What is the best title for the passage?

A.How to change carbon into CO2.

B.A new carbon capture technology.

C.A new technology to get useful carbon.

D.Australia makes the world cleaner than before.

My family and I never talked about school as the ticket to a future. I was in the classrooms, but I wasn’t there to learn to write, read or even speak. When it was my turn to read, I wanted to hide. I was 13 years old, but I already hated being who I was.

I had an English teacher, Mr. Creech, who knew I couldn’t read. In one of my first lessons the teacher said that anyone who had a reading age below six had to stand up. I felt so embarrassed. But at the same time, it made me realize that I needed to change the situation. I was determined it wouldn’t happen again. Later that day, Mr. Creech encouraged me and promised he would try his best to help me learn to read. From then on, I never gave up practicing reading.

Now I was 41 years old. One day, I planned to fly back to Texas to visit my friends and family. On my way from the airport, I saw Mr. Creech buying himself a drink. I rushed over and reached into my pocket to pay for him. “Do I know you?” he asked. “Yes, sir, you do know me,” I answered excitedly. “My name is Anthony Hamilton. You taught me English.” The look on his face told me that he remembered the boy he’d once encouraged.

“I’m so glad I had a chance to see you,” I said. “And Mr. Creech, I have great news to share.” I told him I had learned to read. But that wasn’t all. I had become a published author and an active speaker. “The next time you get another Anthony Hamilton in your classroom, please encourage him to read as well,” I added.

The experts say what once worried me has a name: dyslexia (诵读困难症). But I can tell you it was a lack of desire for education.

1.Why did the author want to hide?

A.Because he felt sorry for himself. B.Because he hated being laughed at.

C.Because he couldn’t read at all. D.Because he didn’t have a ticket.

2.Which of the following could best describe Mr. Creech?

A.Considerate and dutiful. B.Demanding and enthusiastic.

C.Emotional and dedicated. D.Friendly and ambitious.

3.Why couldn’t the author read before meeting Mr.Creech?

A.Because his reading age was not long enough.

B.Because his parents didn’t teach him how to read.

C.Because he was afraid of reading before the class.

D.Because he didn’t have inner driving force to learn to read.

4.What can we infer from the passage?

A.Mr. Creech taught two students called Anthony Hamilton.

B.The author had become a published author and an active speaker.

C.Dyslexia was the underlying reason that made the author unable to read.

D.The author was grateful to Mr. Creech.

DNA analysis has revealed family relationships between more than 10 generations of Stone Age people at megalithic (巨石的) tombs in Ireland and Sweden.

The evidence suggests that megaliths, prehistoric large stone structures, sometimes acted as graves for family groups in northwestern Europe thousands of years ago. The latest findings throw new light on the origins and social structure of the groups that built megaliths in this region—a history that has long been hidden in mystery.

For their study, the international team of researchers analyzed the genomes—the complete set of genetic material in a cell—of 24 Stone Age individuals from five megalithic burial sites in Ireland, Scotland and Gotland, a large Swedish island in the Baltic Sea.

This analysis showed that many of the individuals buried at each megalith, who all lived between  3,800 B.C. and 2,600 B.C.,  according  to  radiocarbon-dating  of  their  remains,  were closely related via family ties.

The results also showed that the individuals buried at the megaliths were related to Neolithic farmers in northern and western Europe but genetically distinct from other hunter-gatherers. This was particularly noticeable at the Ansarve site on the island of Gotland.

“The people buried in the Ansarve tomb are remarkably different on a genetic level compared to the individuals dug out from hunter-gather contexts, showing that the burial tradition in this megalithic tomb, which lasted for over 700 years, was performed by distinct groups with roots in the European Neolithic expansion,” Magdalena Fraser, co-first author from Uppsala University, said in the statement.

1.What’s the significance of the new findings?

A. It reveals the family ties between people in Ireland and Sweden.

B. It implies that many people buried in the tombs were closely related.

C. It indicates the long-hidden mystery concerning DNA analysis.

D. It suggests that the megaliths became tombs thousands of years ago.

2.How did the researchers reach their findings?

A. By interviewing individuals. B. By travelling to different regions.

C. By analyzing genes. D. By studying the burial sites.

3.Which is true according to the latest findings?

A. Some people buried in the tombs were related to farmers.

B. Few people buried in the tombs were genetically different.

C. All the people buried at megaliths had family relationships.

D. People buried in the Ansarve tomb were dug out 700 years later.

4.What’s the main idea of this passage?

A. Megaliths served as tombs thousands of years ago.

B. People buried at the megaliths were recently analyzed.

C. Latest findings shed light on a mystery about burials.

D. Stone-Age people in Ireland and Sweden had close ties.

Dreaming of summer picnics filled with family and fun? We’ve come up with 4 of the top picnic areas across the US.

Cumberland Islands, Georgia

Just a few hours south of Savannah, this national seashore is a wonderful picnic place. It’s an unspoiled place in the Deep South with over 50 miles of hiking trails (小径). Covered in Spanish moss, the trails are lined with trees and since it’s still a rural area, the stars line up for a grand show at night and create the perfect evening starlit picnic opportunity.

Grant Park, Chicago

If you are looking for delicious food in Chicago, go for a taste of a 20-day, lake-front, foodie festival that happens in October each year. Grab a spot near the fountain to enjoy your picnic, appreciate the city scenery and lake views and relax with family and friends. If you are there on July 4th, be sure to plan the day to include the fireworks display at the Navy Pier.

Cranberry Islands, Maine

Here, you’ll enjoy natural picnics with island views. The islands are a delightful group of islands about 20 minutes offshore from Acadia National Park. You can visit the islands by private boat or ferry service. Bring a picnic basket along for the ride as it’s a romantic picnic area to take your special someone or go for a family outing to visit the islands.

Big Sur, California

The Point Lobos State Reserve is a small gem. Besides the coastal wildlife there are rare plant communities, and unique geological formations. It’s good to have a picnic there. We recommend bringing a telescope, because much of the wildlife can be seen only at a distance.

1.Why does the writer advise us to go to Cumberland Islands?

A.Because they are just next to Savannah.

B.Because they have a grand show every night.

C.Because they are almost covered in Spanish moss.

D.Because they keep their original ecology (生态).

2.Where can you enjoy observing wildlife with a telescope?

A.At the Navy Pier. B.At the Point Lobos State Reserve

C.At Acadia National Park. D.In the Deep South.

Why Do You Mishear Popular Song Lyrics (歌词)?

When Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" topped the charts in early 2019, it seemed like you couldn't go five minutes without hearing "I’m gonna take my horse to the old town road . " But a significant subgroup caught this instead “ I’m gonna take my horse to the hotel room. 1.We've been misunderstanding song lyrics for decades, Elton John's “hold me closer, Tony Danza" —er, "tiny dancer"— included. These modem musical mishearings even have their own name mondegreens.

2. When noise hits our eardrums, tiny hairs convert it into an electric signal, which travels through the auditory nerve to the temporal lobe (颗叶). 3. If the sounds are clear and the terms familiar, we then "hear" a mostly accurate translation of what someone is saying. But music can drown out lyrics, and singers can pronounce words with extra ability. The sounds in songs are often muddy and unclear. In this case, our brains struggle to find what makes sense.

In that panic, our head reacts by offering up similar-sounding but far more familiar phrases, says Thomas Ethofer, a professor of psychotherapy in Germany. For example, if the mind can't firstly comprehend taking a horse to an old town road, it offers up an alternative to quickly solve the problem. 4.

In fact, according to Ethofer, previous knowledge of the mondegreen will make you more likely to hear it. 5. From a psychological aspect, he says, perhaps these mix-ups are so common because we enjoy resolving unclearness. Regardless — the sky, this guy, tiny dancer, Tony Danza, old town road, hotel room — they are all still songs we'll listen to on repeat.

A.This was far from a first.

B.No wonder you will make this mistake.

C.How can you listen to something more accurately?

D.There, it turns nerve firings into words with meaning.

E.That's because your brain is already prepared for that version.

F.That translation can stick, even after we learn the correct lyrics.

G.So why does the Jimi Hendrix lyric "kiss the sky" often become "kiss this guy"?

Do Cyber Schools Make the Grade?

Students in Caldwell, Idaho, can attend class in their pajamas!

At Vallivue Virtual Academy, courses are taught online. Students work at home with parents, who serve as learning coaches. A certified teacher oversees the students' progress.

The cyber school was launched as a free option for students in kindergarten through grade 8 who have trouble succeeding in the district's traditional public school. Supporters of the program say that virtual learning can help students work at their own pace. If students struggle with subjects, they can take those courses online and spend more time on them. Valerie VanSelous, a teacher from Hopewell Township, N.J・,agrees. "Teachers, students, and parents need to accept new technology and not be afraid of it. Offering different teaching aids just might be the key to unlocking a student' s potential. "

Some also believe that attending virtual school can prepare students for college and for work after graduation. "We need to be responsible for working on our own,” says Angela Goscilo, a senior from Pound Ridge, N.Y. "We need to develop technology skills that will help us in whatever we do. Getting an early start is a good idea."

Not everyone gives cyber schools a passing grade however. Some educators argue that online learning makes it hard for students to make friends. Payton Mcdonough, 13, a seventh grader from Glencoe, m., agrees. " I don't know how I could sit at a computer all day without actually interacting with my peers and teachers," he says.

In addition, virtual schools don’t have enough structure. Students who take online courses can set their own schedules, which will cause problems for students who have trouble staying motivated.

Many parents also feel that cyber schools put unrealistic time demands on them because they have to oversee their kids' daily work. Many of them have full-time jobs. How are they going to run their children's education, excel in their jobs, and take care of their other responsibilities at home?

1.What is the cyber school intended for?

A.Reducing the time students spend online.

B.Helping those who struggle in traditional schools.

C.Allowing teachers to work at their own pace.

D.Encouraging students to learn about technology.

2.What does the underlined sentence mean in paragraph 5?

A.Not everyone approves of cyber schools.

B.Not everyone has attended a cyber school.

C.Not everyone has given cyber schools a test.

D.Not everyone cares about students in cyber schools.

3.How do working parents feel about overseeing their kids' daily work?

A.It's worthwhile.

B.It's unnecessary.

C.It's demanding.

D.It's discouraging.

4.What is the main idea of the text?

A.Students in Caldwell can attend class at home every day.

B.There are various arguments for and against virtual schools.

C.It's important for students to learn to work in the virtual world.

D.Cyber schools are better than traditional schools in many ways.

One rainy afternoon, I was on a crosstown bus when a young woman jumped on. She had a child with her who was about three or four years old. The bus was full, bumpy(颠簸的), and it soon got noisy, as her kid began crying — he was upset that he couldn't sit next to his mother. She looked embarrassed.

Then another woman, a little older, stood up and moved so that the mother and child could sit together. The mum smiled as a thank-you. And then three words came out of the older woman's mouth that raised the entire energy of that bus ride: “I've been there.”

Simple, undramatic, and honest. In that moment, it seemed to unite the diverse people of the city. Why? Because almost all experiences are shared human experiences. They're universal. We forget that as we go through life, focused on our own troubles and needs — which are actually less unique than we think.

Sometimes painful past experiences prevent us from wanting to open up to others because we don't want to revisit our own history. But a wonderful way to honor your past hurt is to help comfort another's current pain.

When I was a little girl, we lived on donations from local families and clothing from the " lost and found" baskets. It was shameful for me at the time — I lived in fear of being caught in a friend' s cast-off item.

Even when it was warmer, I refused to take off a layer in the classroom for this reason. Now I don't meet people who are in this exact situation, but I do notice when someone is struggling with financial shame or feels less than other people they meet. And I'm quick to say some version of, "I've been there."

Can the essence of these three words help you make a small difference right now? It can be as simple as volunteering your seat, sharing some helpful advice, or even lightening the mood with a joke when you notice that someone's uncomfortable — because we're all in this together.

1.What influence did the older woman's words have on the people around?

A.Causing discomfort. B.Breaking long silence.

C.Creating a heated debate. D.Inspiring common feelings.

2.What does the author think of personal troubles and needs?

A.They are mostly shared experiences. B.They don't really matter to anyone'

C.They will be forgotten with time. D.They are unique to each individual.

Some psychologists say that community art — art made to be displayed free of charge in a particular community — can make a big difference.

Unlike the random graffiti (涂鸦)that many people consider an eyesore, community art can bring people together and encourage respect. In the U.S. city of Philadelphia, for example, psychologists are doing a citywide project where mental health patients work with average people to paint murals(壁画). The aim of this project is to reduce the mental illness and promote a new dialogue about people who struggle with these issues.

Art also makes neighborhoods more attractive and has a unique ability to open people up. Neighbors can share comments with one another about a recently painted mural, which can challenge their prejudices and open their eyes to the world.

Businesses can also be promoted by community art. In Fort Smith, a town in the U.S. state of Arkansas, artists from around the globe came together to paint murals. One of the goals of the project was to expand the town's cultural offerings in order to attract more visitors. Not only locals but also tourists were drawn to see the murals. The money they spent while visiting the town benefited local businesses.

Generous financial support is provided for community art projects in many cities and towns. In the UK, the Arts Council England has invested nearly half a million dollars in community art. Some of it, for example, has paid for a new exhibition space created inside an old mill in the town of Brierfield. In the U.S., an organization called the Knight Foundation has invested millions of dollars in community projects, including many that focus on art.

“If you are cold, it will warm you; if you are too heated, it will cool you; if you are depressed, it will cheer you; if you are exhausted, it will calm you.” The poem best identifies the passion for tea in Britain. Outside of the United Kingdom, many people refer to afternoon tea as “high tea”. Afternoon tea, also known as low tea, is what most people think of when they hear “high tea”. It involves things like manners, lace(蕾丝) and light meals such as cookies and finger sandwiches. It is typically served in the mid-afternoon and it was traditionally served on low tables, therefore its two names.

Legend has it that afternoon tea was started in the mid-1800s by the Duchess(公爵夫人) of Bedford. Around that time, kerosene(煤油) lamps were introduced into wealthier homes and eating a late dinner( around 8 or 9 p.m.) became fashionable. This increasingly late dinner was one of the only two meals each day, and the other was a mid-morning one. The story goes that the Duchess found herself with a “sinking feeling”. This came from hunger during the long wait between meals. She decided to invite friends over for various snacks and tea. The idea of an afternoon tea gathering spread across high society and became a favorite pastime of females for leisure. Later, it spread to other social groups.

However, the British working population did not have afternoon tea. They had a meal about midday, and a meal after work, between five and seven o’clock. This meal was called “high tea” or just “tea”. Traditionally eaten early evening, high tea was a substantial meal that combined delicious sweet food, such as cookies, cakes or tea bread, with heavy food, such as cheese on toast, cold meals and poached eggs on toast. This meal is now often replaced with a supper due to people eating their main meal in the evening rather than at midday.

“Nomophobia”, NO Mobile Phone phobia(恐惧) is a 21st-century term for the fear of not being able to use your smartphone. Smartphone addiction is on the rise, surveys show, and a new study released adds to a growing body of evidence that smartphone addiction is harming our minds literally.

Smartphone addiction affects many people from all across the globe. Over 1.8 billion people own smartphones and the average owners check their screens 150 times a day. Considering those numbers, it shouldn’t come as a surprise when 44% of people (compared with 20% in 2011) admit feeling anxious when they can’t have access to their phones.

Researchers from Harvard University used brain imaging to study the brains of 19 teenage boys who were diagnosed with smartphone addiction. Compared with 19 teenagers who were not addicted, the brains of the addicted boys had significantly higher levels of GABA, which decelerates neurons (神经元) than levels of glutamate-glutamine, which energizes brain signals. That results in poorer attention and control, which you don’t want to have, because you want to stay focused. So that means you are easier to get distracted.

“Addicted teenagers in the study also had significantly higher scores in anxiety, depression and levels of impulsiveness (冲动) ,” said Dr. Leslie Perlow, who led the study.

If you seem to have the symptoms of smart device addiction, experts have some suggestions in addition to mindfulness training. First, turn off your phone at certain times of the day, such as in meetings, when having dinner, playing with your kids, and of course, driving. Remove social media apps, like Facebook and Twitter from your phone, and only check-in from your laptop. Try to stop yourself to 15-minute intervals at set times of the day when it won’t affect work or family life. Don’t bring your cellphone and its harmful blue light to bed, and use an old-fashioned alarm to wake you. And last, try to replace your smart device time with healthier activities such as meditating or actually interacting with real people.

1.What is the conclusion of the research?

A.Smartphone addiction leads to distraction.

B.Smartphone addiction easily causes anger.

C.Smartphone addiction is harmful to the mind.

D.Smartphone addiction brings about anxiety and depression.

2.Where can you find the data that best supports smartphone addiction is on the rise?

A.In Paragraph 2. B.In Paragraph 3.

C.In Paragraph 4. D.In Paragraph 5.

3.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “decelerates” in Paragraph 3?

A.Speeds up. B.Slows down.

C.Adds to. D.Cuts down.

4.Which of the suggestions is encouraged according to the text?

A.To use an old-fashion cellphone. B.To participate in more social activities.

C.To stop fifteen-minute intervals. D.To turn off the blue light on bed.
