Love to laugh out loud? Then you may be the perfect candidate for laugh, a global project to create the first piece of art in outer space using the International Space Station's (ISS) newly acquired 3D printer. While transforming an emotion into art may seem a little far-fetched, Eyal Gever is known for his gift for combining art and technology to make 3D sculptures from life-like digital simulations based on moments in time.

He was offered the project by Made In Space Inc. that specializes in manufacturing 3D printers for use in microgravity. Realizing the enormous responsibility of being the first artist whose work is created in space, Gever wanted to choose a subject with universal appeal - something that would be appreciated by everyone regardless of country or culture. After considering several ideas, he settled on creating a 3D human laughter, an emotion that is loved and treasured by all of humanity.

People wishing to send their giggles to space have to download the laugh app and record their best laughter. The app turns the sound file into a 3D model that resembles a burst of light or a "laugh star" which can be shared on social media and also rated by other app users. The laughter that receives the maximum number of likes and tweets by December 31, will be declared the winner.

The artist will then transmit the design file of the winning laugh to NASA's Operations Support Center in Alabama, where it will be uploaded via a satellite link to the ISS. The astronauts will print the 3D sculpture of the "laugh star" and release it into orbit (轨道) where it will float among real stars for ever, or at least until discovered by aliens!

Though this is the first time Gever is creating art for space, he is no stranger to unusual projects. His "Water Dancer" , a projection of light on a water wall, features a dancer whose body disperses(伸展) as she moves. The recently sculpted "Piece of Ocean" , created from a realistic computer simulation(模试验) of ocean waves, bears an impressive resemblance to the real thing.

A.It is hard to change sound into a 3D model.

B.It is easily transported in the air.

C.It will cost him little money.

D.It is enjoyed around the world.

3.What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Gever is good at making unusual arts.

B.Gever likes to bring others a lot of joy.

C.Gever uses water a lot in his art.

D.Gever copied masterpieces with a computer.

4.What is the passage mainly about?

A.The first piece of art in outer space.

B.3D printed giggles will be launched into space.

C.A 3D human laughter will be sent to ISS.

D.The 3D sculpture of the "laugh star" orbits the earth.

It is 6:00 am on the first day of the school year. In Cherrybrook Technology High School, mathematics teacher Eddie Woo is already at work.

One of the first things before the first bell rings is to set up his tripod(三脚架) and iPad in the middle of the classroom. This technology is Mr. Woo's core tool of the trade. "I'm Mr. Woo. I record my lessons. I record all of them. In fact, I'm about to record this one," he explains to his new maths class.

The unique approach to teaching mathematics has not gone unnoticed. Mr. Woo is arguably the most famous teacher in Australia - a maths teacher by day and an internet sensation(轰动) by night.

Good morning, everyone,

I’m Li Hua from Xing Guan Middle school. The topic of my speech is “Let’s ride bicycles.”

As known to all, with the improvement of people’s living standards, cars have become a popular means of transport, bring great convenience to our life. But, they have also caused some problem such as air pollution or traffic jams.

How can we solve the problems then? As far as I am concern, ride bicycles is a good solution. For first thing, bicycles don’t need any petrol and they are energy –saving. For another , bicycles are environmental friendly because they won’t give off waste gas .What’s more , it is a good way for us to exercise and it is beneficial to our healthy .

Therefore, let’s take on the responsibility to build up a low-carbon city by riding bicycles. Come on and join us!

Thank you!

The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we’ve never been before.

But just as in face to face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line. 1. Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes.

For anything you’re about to send: ask yourself, “Would I say this to the person’s face?” if the answer is no, rewrite and reread. 2.

If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (本能) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so. 3. If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.

4. Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it’s a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good manners yourself doesn’t give you license to correct everyone else. 5. At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended.

It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don’t ask such questions.

A.It’s natural that there are some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online.

B.Repeat the process till you feel sure that you’d feel comfortable saying the words to the person’s face.

C.Everyone was new to the network once.

D.The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated.

E.When you send short messages to a person online, you must say something beautiful to hear.

F.You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages.

G.If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely.

How could we possibly think that keeping animals in cages in unnatural environments — mostly for entertainment purposes — is fair and respectful?

Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However, most zoos remain “collections” of interesting “things” rather than protective habitats. Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural homes.

Zoos claim to educate people and save endangered species, but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals’ natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species’ name, diet, and natural range. The animals’ normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don’t usually take care of the animals’ natural needs.

The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusual and self-destructive behavior called zoochosis (动物精神病). A worldwide study of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.

Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding of endangered big cats, Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Haven’t we seen enough competitions to name baby animals?

Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals’ natural habitats.

1.How would the author describe the animals’ life in zoos?

A.Dangerous. B.Unhappy.

C.Natural. D.Easy.

2.In the state of zoochosis, animals _________.

A.remain in cages B.behave strangely

C.attack other animals D.enjoy moving around

3.What does the author try to argue in the passage?

A.Zoos are not worth the public support.

B.Zoos fail in their attempt to save animals.

C.Zoos should treat animals as human beings.

D.Zoos use animals as a means of entertainment.

4.Although the author argues against zoos, he would still agree that _________.

A.zoos have to keep animals in small cages

B.most animals in zoos are endangered species

C.some endangered animals are reproduced in zoos

D.it’s acceptable to keep animals away from their habitats

Computer technology is still developing rapidly. The computer of the future will increase in value and performance while decrease in cost. It will become smaller, but faster and more powerful.

It is possible to make some guesses about what the future of the computer will look like, based upon the types of technologies that are being developed now. A lot of progress has already been made in some of these new technologies, but some are still in their earliest stages and may not be ready for use for years. Two of the most interesting areas of computing that are currently being developed are quantum computing(量子计算) and nanotechnology(纳米技术).

Quantum computing is one possibility for the future of the computer that could make computers run far faster than even the quickest computers do today. Quantum computers could be able to do what modern supercomputers are unable to do by using transistors that are able to take on many statistics at the same time.

Nanotechnology could also change the face of computing, by creating computers that could be very powerful, though they are tiny in size. These computers could be incorporated(并入) into everyday objects, including electrical appliances(电器), clothes and even the human body. We will be able to use computers in new and unimaginable ways. They will become a part of our lives rather than simply being a box that is used only for specific purposes such as work.

Quantum computing and nanotechnology will be able to play new roles, which will make us live greener lives, as well as enjoy better health and happier lives.

1.According to the text, quantum computing ________.

A.has been put in use so far

B.can make computers run by themselves

C.can reduce the cost of computers

D.will work by using transistors

2.The text is mainly about ________.

A.what nanotechnology is

B.what quantum computing is

C.what the computer of the future is like

D.what future computers can bring us

3.Which of the following best shows the structure of the text?

(①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2⑤=Paragraph 5)

A. B.

C. D.

The Olympic Games are the greatest festival of sport in the world. Every four years, a hundred or more countries send their best sportsmen to compete for the highest honors of the sport. As many as 6000 people take part in over 20 sports. For the winners, there are gold medals and glory. But there is honor, too, for all who compete, win or lose. That is the spirit of the Olympics — to take part is what matters.

The Olympic Games always start in bright color and action. The teams of all the nations parade in the opening ceremony and march round the track. The custom is for the Greek team to march in first. For it was in Greece that the Olympics began. The team of the country where the Games are being held — the host country — marches in last.

The runner with the Olympic torch then enters the stadium and lights the flame. A sportsman from the host country takes the Olympic oath on behalf of all the competitors. The judges and officials also take an oath. After the sportsmen march out of the stadium, the host country puts on a wonderful display.

The competition begins the next day. There are usually more than twenty sports in the Games. The rule is that there must be at least fifteen. The main events are in track and field, but it is a few days before these sports start. Each day the competitors take part in a different sport — riding, shooting, swimming, and cross-country running. Points are gained for each event. Medals are awarded for the individual winners and for national teams.

More and more women are taking part in the games. They first competed in 1900, in tennis and golf, which are no longer held in the Olympics. Women’s swimming events were introduced in 1912, but it was not until 1928 that there were any track and field events for women. Now, they compete in all but half a dozen of the sports. In horse riding, shooting, and boat racing, they may compete in the same events as the men.

A.win a gold medal B.be equal

C.gain glory D.participate

2.From the passage, we can learn that _________.

A.the first team to march in the opening ceremony is the most important one

B.a sportsman represents all the athletes to take an oath after a wonderful display

C.the track and field events do not start until a few days after the Olympics begin

D.women were allowed to take part in track and field events in 1912

3.Which of the following is NOT the Olympic event nowadays?

A.Tennis. B.Shooting.

C.Riding D.Swimming

4.Which is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A.Olympic Spirit.

B.Opening ceremony of the Olympics.

When I was twelve, I went to a soccer field for the first time. I found hard to drag myself away from it. But all I could do were to make a paper one instead, so I didn’t have enough money to buy a football. Every day on my way home, I couldn’t help kick whatever on the road could be kicked.

Several weeks late I felt I was on top of the world. While I got homea real black and white ball was waiting for me on my desk, in which was my birthday present from my parents. I was very wild with joy that I didn’t know what to say. I simply rushed out with a ball and playing with other kids until I was completely tired out.

Wanting to be more responsible is admirable. Being responsible can seem hard at first, but if you keep at it, it will become second nature to you!

1. But to show that you can care for yourself and others, you need to do things before you’re asked. That shows you are responsible enough to see what needs to be done and take care of it. When you have a family, friends, or pets, being responsible may mean placing their needs above your own. 2. But it does mean you may need to take care of yourself later if someone you love has a need right now.

Being consistent is of great importance. 3. If you want to be responsible, then you have to find a routine that works for you and stick to it. For instance, don’t just study for ten hours in a row and then give up on studying for three weeks; instead, spend one hour every day looking over the course material.

In daily life, problems come up in any relationship. 4. A responsible person looks for solutions instead of trying to decide whose fault it is. Similarly, don’t attack someone instead of dealing with the issue and you should take time to think your words through. 5. If you find it difficult to control what you’re saying, try counting to ten in your head as you take deep breaths.

A.Don’t let your anger get the better of you.

B.That doesn’t mean you don’t take care of yourself.

C.Doing just the things you are asked to do is responsible.

D.Your responsibility won’t mean much if it is hit or miss.

E.Instead of blaming the other person, try to find a way to solve them.

F.Where you show you’re responsible is when you can say you made a mistake.

G.Staying consistent also means keeping your word you make to yourself and others.

There is good reason to believe that emerging digital technologies can improve the functioning of agriculture markets at a very low cost per farmer.

Mobile phones, particularly GPS-enabled smartphones, make the provision of tailored information much easier than before. Recommendations for agrochemical inputs that address specific soil conditions can improve yields while reducing environmentally harmful and wasteful use. Farmers can tailor their investment decisions to expected weather patterns and benefit from improvements in weather forecasting. As smartphone use continues to expand, farmers will increasingly have the means to watch videos demonstrating new agricultural techniques or take pictures of pests affecting their crops and either request automatic identification and recommendations or raise questions with agronomists. Finally, digital agricultural services can improve the functioning of agricultural supply chains. For example, these services could make it easier for farmers to check and compare input or output prices ; and facilitate coordination among farmers in an area and with traders.

However, despite the potential of digital agriculture, reasons for skepticism remain. Overcoming informational restrictions may not result in substantially increased agricultural productivity, given the existence of other barriers such as input shortages at local markets, and missing insurance markets. Informational barriers are also important, and mobile phone messages may not overcome them: some farmers ignore messages, especially from unknown sources. Some farmers are illiterate and have difficulty using voice menus. Senders may design obscure and confusing messages or may provide messages designed to target objectives at odds with farmer interests. Effective communication may require pictures or video. Smartphones are thus required to receive these messages, but few farmers currently have access to this technology in the poorest countries. Finally, farmers may begin to ignore reminders they are repeated too often, or they may be annoyed by unwanted messages,  which could lead to reduced trust in the messaging system.

1.According to Para 2, what can farmers do in digital agriculture?

A.They can use agrochemical to handle environmental problems.

B.They can adjust investment decisions based on weather forecasts.

C.They can identify pests on their crops by watching videos.

D.They can compete with others in prices in an efficient way.

2.What does the underlined phrase“at odds with”in the last paragraph mean?

A.In disagreement with. B.By means of.

C.In line with. D.Apart from.

3.Which of the following is NOT considered as an informational barrier?

A.Shortages of input in local markets and lack of insurance markets.

B.No access to digital technology in poorest countries.

C.Failure to read or use the voice menu on mobile phones.

D.Loss of interest and ignorance of the intended messages.

4.What is the author’s attitude towards digital agriculture?

A.Supportive. B.Doubtful. C.Objective. D.Negative.

Since the time of Socrates, it has been widely said that art imitates life. In the case of literature, however, it would be more accurate to say that art reflects life. The writings of the Romantics were a natural result of life in 19th century America and American Romanticism was the first truly American literary movement, including a group of authors who wrote and published between 1820 and 1860.

The unique American history and landscape had a profound influence on the romanticists. Many were writing not long after the War of 1812. This was a time of growth and expansion and their idealism fueled high hopes for the infant nation. The country was moving westward into vast newly acquired territory. The frontier, both as a place and a concept, became an important representation of the American spirit.

While American Romanticism was a new attitude toward nature, it was also a new attitude toward people, promoting the solitary individual standing against society. Individualism is a typical American value and was central to their writings, which urged people to follow their inner knowing regardless of the pressure to conform.

Romantic writers rebelled against the idea that reason was the best tool for discovering truth. Instead, they deliberately explored feeling, imagination, fantasy, and belief. Their style took advantage of personal freedom in order to break through the wall separating the author and the reader, and gave the author the freedom to comment on the events in the story in novel ways.

Stylistically, the American romantics liked to experiment with form and the novel became an important vehicle for expression, unlike the European romantics who focused mainly on poetry. They also made clever use of symbols to refer to truths or knowledge that exist beyond rationality (合理性).

1.What increased hopes for the newly born America?

A.The War of 1812. B.The belief of romanticists.

C.The western territory. D.The history of America.

2.Which of the following is an ideal of American romantic writers?

A.Reason should be involved to find out truth. B.The author and the reader need to be separated.

C.Individuals should follow their heart. D.Nature is more important than humans.

3.What literary form did American romantics mainly adopt to express their ideas?

A.Poetry. B.Use of symbols. C.Novels. D.Drama.

4.What is the passage mainly about?

A.Advances in American history. B.The rebellion of Romantic writers.

C.A new attitude to people. D.Romanticism in American literature.

1.Why didn’t Nakushi tell her parents about the harassment?

A.She was unwilling to leave school. B.She didn’t want to get married.

C.She thought it wouldn’t help. D.She worried about the honor.

I am grateful to my English teacher Susan, at whose help I couldn't have won first prize in the English Talent Competition for high school student last week.

I used to be poorly in spoken English. I was too shy to speak in class. Since she teaches us last term, she has been encouraging him to overcome fear and speak out in class. Thanks to her, I have made great progresses. Besides, I practiced several times in the front of her.  It was her advice which made me a better speaker and full of confidence.  But I owe my success to her.

Susan set a good example to me. I am determined to become an English teacher when I grow up.

There was a park near my home. But I didn’t go there very often. Many people said there was nothing special. One afternoon I went into the park and found it was really small. I walked quickly because there wasn’t much to see. I walked for some time and found myself standing in front of two paths.1.I found that the two paths were different from each other.

3.It wasn’t nice , but I didn’t want to give up. At last, I came to the end of the path. Ah! There was a small garden there. It was beautiful, perhaps the most beautiful garden I had ever seen.4.

Many people told me that there was nothing much to see in the park. Now I’d like to tell them that if they had followed the right way, they would have felt differently. But when I told them about what I had seen in the park, they just smiled at me without saying a word. I knew they didn’t believe me. They couldn’t even remember that path because it was so small.

5.Don’t be afraid to choose a different path. You may get a big surprise!

A.There is nothing that I want to see.

You carry a 1.3 kg mass of fatty material in your head that controls everything you will ever do. This fantastic control center lets you think, learn, create, and feel emotions. It also controls everything your body does. What is this amazing machine? It’s your brain a structure so amazing that the famous scientist James Watson called it "the most complex thing we have yet discovered in our universe".

Imagine your kitten jumped onto the kitchen counter, and was about to step onto a hot stove. You would have only seconds to act. In situations like this, your brain reads the signals from your eyes and quickly calculates when, where and at what speed you need to run to save her. Then it tells your muscles to move. No computer can match your brain’s great ability to download, process, and react to the flood of information from your eyes, ears and other sensory organs.

If a bee lands on your foot, sensory neurons(神经元) in your skin send this information to your brain at a speed of more than 240 kilometers per hour. Your brain then uses motor neurons to send a message back to your foot: Shake the bee off quickly! Motor neurons can send this information at more than 320 kilometers per hour!

Your brain contains about 100 billion tiny cells: neurons it would take you more than 3,000 years if you tried to count them all. Whenever you dream, laugh, think, see or move, tiny chemical and electrical signals are racing between these neurons along billions of tiny neuron pathways. Believe it or not, the activity in your brain never stops. Countless messages fly around inside it every second, like a super-fast game of table tennis. Your neurons create and send more messages than all the phones in the entire world. And although a single neuron generates only a tiny amount of electricity, all your neurons together can generate enough electricity to power a light bulb.

1.By "the most complex thing", James Watson means __________.

A. a supercomputer         B. the universe

C. human brains          D. our emotions

2.Which of the following statements is true according to the 2nd and 3rd paragraph?

A. Brains can download more information than any computer.

B. The kitten plays an important role in testing human brain power.

C. Motor neurons in human brains serve to send countless messages.

D. Your brains can use neurons to send messages back faster than bees’.

3. The author mentions "to power light bulbs" (Para. 4) to show __________.

A. neurons can send lots of messages

B. how many active tiny cells brains contain

C. how much electricity brains can generate

D. there is countless information in the brain

4.What is the main idea of the passage?

A. Powerful brain is a wonderful machine.

B. Brains work well in controlling body movements.

C. Brain is the most complex structure in the universe.

D. Human brains are composed of numerous neurons.

Moksh Jawa, 16, a student at Washington High School in the US, has already become a legend(传奇) among students. “Why not?” might be his favorite question to ask.

As a seventh-grader, he taught himself coding(编程) by studying on the Internet.

As a high school freshman, he passed the AP Computer Science A exam with a 5, the highest score possible.

As a sophomore (高中二年级学生), he developed his own online course and helped his classmates get through it because his high school didn't teach coding.

Everything he did came from his own interest. His father sent him a link to Codeacademy, an online coding training program, in middle school. He learned a programming(编程) language all by himself after signing up to the website.

“I just fell in love with computer science,” Jawa said. Along the way, he lit a fire of curiosity and passion among classmates to learn coding too.

“All of my friends, especially the girls, were really, really afraid of computer science,” he said. But the subject and exam weren't things to be feared, he said, “Computer science is all about logic(逻辑), not about how smart you are. ”

To make his knowledge available online, Jawa set about creating his own online course, with easy-to-follow lessons. He included quizzes and tests too.

The course has so far attracted 3, 200 students across the US and in 120 countries and regions, including China, Ukraine and Algeria.  It shows, Jawa said, the huge need for coding lessons.

When video lecturing, “I deliver it like I'm talking from one high school student to another .” Jawa said.“ It's always great to make it as clear and fun as possible, and to try to keep my voice as energetic as possible. ”

He also does that, when teaching members of the computer science club he founded at his high school.

“His tutorials(辅导) were great, ”said Taj Shaik, the club's co-president, who took the whole course last year. “I'm definitely one of the early adopters(使用者) of Moksh. ”

“He's pretty amazing, ”said Bob Moran, principal of Washington High School, who saw him lead the club. “He was just a fantastic teacher—clear, organized and entertaining. When a student got the right answer, he would throw him a candy. ”

1.Which of the following probably made Moksh Jawa a legend among students?

A.He created his own online coding course.

B.He welcomes any kind of challenge by asking, “Why not?”

C.He learned an intermediate programming language.

D.He earns a lot of money by coding for companies.

2.Which of the following would Jawa probably agree with?

A.You have to be smart to learn computer science well.

B.Interest is the most important when learning coding.

C.Computer science is not difficult to learn.

D.Coding is useful and everyone should know it.

3.According to the article, when teaching, Jawa ______.

A.is patient but strict with his students

B.likes to do things in a fixed order

C.usually applies unusual teaching methods

D.tries to make his classes simple yet interesting

If Confucius(孔子) were alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.

While many people in China remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.

But that doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.

In the past twenty years, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of(利用) ancient Chinese wisdom to make up the drawbacks(缺陷) Western philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.

So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well. Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West. As for the old thinker, he will not be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.

1.The opening paragraph is mainly intended to ________.

A. provide some key facts about Confucius

B. attract the readers’ interest in the subject

C. show great respect for the ancient thinker

D. prove the popularity of modern birthday celebrations

2.We can learn from Paragraph 4 that American students ________.

A. take an active part in Chinese competitions

B. try to get high scores in Chinese exams

C. have a great interest in studying Chinese

D. fight for a chance to learn Chinese

3.What is the best title for this passage?

A. Forgotten Wisdom in America

B. Huge Fans of the Chinese Language

C. Chinese Culture for Westerners

D. Old Thinker with a Big Future

4.The passage is likely to appear in ________.

A. a biography    B. a history paper

C. a philosophy textbook    D. a newspaper
