For Western designers, China and its rich culture have long been an inspiration for Western creative. “It’s no secret that China has always been a source(来源) of inspiration for designers,” says Amanda Hill, chief creative officer at A+E Networks, a global media company and home to some of the biggest fashion(时尚) shows. Earlier this year, the China Through A Looking Glass exhibition in New York exhibited 140 pieces of China-inspired fashionable clothing alongside Chinese works of art, with the aim of exploring the influence of Chinese aesthetics(美学) on Western fashion and how China has fueled the fashionable imagination for centuries. The exhibition had record attendance, showing that there is huge interest in Chinese influences. “China is impossible to overlook,” says Hill. “Chinese models are the faces of beauty and fashion campaigns that sell dreams to women all over the world, which means Chinese women are not just consumers of fashion — they are central to its movement.” Of course, not only are today’s top Western designers being influenced by China—some of the best designers of contemporary fashion are themselves Chinese. “Vera Wang, Alexander Wang, Jason Wu are taking on Galliano, Albaz, Marc Jacobs—and beating them hands down in design and sales,” adds Hill. For Hill, it is impossible not to talk about China as the leading player when discussing fashion. “The most famous designers are Chinese, so are the models, and so are the consumers,” she says. “China is no longer just another market; in many senses it has become the market. If you talk about fashion today, you are talking about China—its influences, its direction, its breathtaking clothes, and how young designers and models are finally acknowledging that in many ways.” 1.What can we learn about the exhibition in New York? A.It promoted the sales of artworks. B.It attracted a large number of visitors. C.It showed ancient Chinese clothes. D.It aimed to introduce Chinese models. 2.What does Hill say about Chinese women? A.They are setting the fashion. B.They start many fashion campaigns. C.They admire super models. D.They do business all over the world. 3.What do the underlined words “taking on” in paragraph 4 mean? A.learning from B.looking down on C.working with D.competing against 4.What can be a suitable title for the text? A.Young Models Selling Dreams to the World B.A Chinese Art Exhibition Held in New York C.Differences Between Eastern and Western Aesthetics D.Chinese Culture Fueling International Fashion Trends
What happens when the right to know comes up against the right not to know? The ease of genetic testing has brought this question to light. Two _______ legal cases-one in Britain, the other in Germany - stand to alter the way medicine is practised. Both cases involve Huntington’s disease (HD). whose _______ include loss of co-ordination (协调), mood changes and cognitive (认知的) decline. It develops between the ages of 30 and 50, and is eventually fatal. Every child of an _______ parent has a 50% chance of inheriting it. In the British case, _______ for trial at the High Court in London in November, a woman known as ABC-to protect the _______ of her daughter, who is a minor-is charging a London hospital, St. George’s Healthcare NHS Trust, for not _______ her father’s diagnosis of HD with her. ABC was pregnant at the time of his diagnosis, in 2009. She argues that had she been aware of it, she would have stopped the pregnancy. As it was, she found out only after giving birth to her daughter. She later tested _______ for HD. The German case is in some ways the mirror image of the British one. Unlike in Britain, in Germany the right not to know genetic information is protected in law. _______ , in 2011 a doctor informed a woman that her divorced husband - the doctor's patient - had tested positive for HD. This meant their two children were _______ the disease. She accused the doctor, who had acted with his patient's permission. Both children being minors at the time, they could not legally be tested for the disease, which, as the woman’s lawyers pointed out, is currently ________. They argued that she was therefore helpless to act on the information, and ________ suffered a reactive depression that prevented her from working. Both cases test a legal grey area. If the right to know is ________ recognized in Britain later this year, that may remove some uncertainties, but it will also create new ones. To what lengths should doctors go to track down and inform family members, ________? It is the law’s job to ________ these rights for the modern age. When the law falls behind technology, somebody often pays the price, and currently that somebody is ________ . Climbing the world's highest mountain could not have been further from Xia Boyu's mind as a 25-year-old in 1974, when he played for the provincial soccer team in Qinghai. But when the Chinese Mountaineering Association announced it was looking for climbers to join an upcoming journey, Xia put in an application so that he 1.at least get a free health check-up. After just a few months of training, Xia and his fellow climbers started climbing the 8,848-metre mountain in January 1975. Three years later, a foreign expert 3.(invite) to assess Xia's condition concluded that with artificial legs, Xia would be able to walk again and even climb mountains. The Nepalese government announced a ban on double-amputee climbers on Qomolongma in December 2017, but it didn't last long after a protest 8.a disabled support group. "I had thought when I finally reached the summit, I would shout it to the world. I would do all these poses for photos. But when the moment arrived, I just fell calm," Xia said.
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。 School uniforms are becoming more and more popular across the U.S.A. That’s no surprise, because they offer many benefits. They immediately end the powerful social sorting and labeling (标记) that come from clothing. If all students are dressed in the same way, they will not pay too much attention to their clothing, and some of them will not be laughed at for wearing the “wrong” clothes. Some people are against the strict rule of school uniforms, but they do not realize that students already accept a kind of rule - wanting to look just like their friends. The difference is that the clothing students choose for themselves creates social barriers (障碍); school uniforms tear those barriers down. As in other places, uniforms remind the wearers of their purposes and duties. For example, when a man or woman puts on a police uniform, he or she becomes, for a time, the symbol (象征) of law and order. The uniform means to the wearer his or her special duties and sends the same message to everyone the wearer meets. People with different jobs wear uniforms of one kind or another. For students, the school uniform reminds them that their task for the six or seven hours they are in school is to get an education. Some parents are unhappy about uniforms, saying that school uniforms will affect their children’s “creativity”. Actually, as noted above, the clothes students choose to wear do not necessarily express their individuality. They just copy their classmates. Students have the rest of the day to be as creative as they like. While they’re in school, their job is to master reading, writing, and mathematics; this should take up all the creativity they have. Mastery of those skills will be good for the students to build up their creativity in every way. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Everybody knows the importance of drinking enough water. As we all know, drinking water benefits your skin, muscles and organs.1. The major reason for that is related to human biological needs. When you're a baby, you're 75 percent water. Then, as the years get higher, you get drier.2. It helps you lose weight, according to a study from the University of Birmingham. The researchers found that drinking 500 ml of water thirty minutes before a meal helped participants lose 10 more pounds than those who did not.3. All participants were advised to improve their diet and physical activity levels.84 overweight adults were involved.Among them 41 were told to “preload” with water, while 43 were told to control their water intake before eating. After 12 weeks, the participants instructed to “preload” with water lost 2.87 pounds more than those in the control group on average. In addition, the participants preloading with water before each of their three main meals every day lost 9.48 pounds over the 12 weeks.4. Dr.Helen Parretti, a lecturer at the University of Birmingham, had this to say of the study: 5.Just drinking 500 ml of water, three times a day, before your main meals may help reduce your weight...and this could be an easy way for weight loss. Furthermore, it can be significant for an individual to lose extra weight, making a potential contribution to public health. A.Another reason to drink water is right here. B.The study began with a weight management consultation. C.The beauty of these findings is that losing weight is simple. D.But not everyone can get access to tap water in some areas. E.It also helps prevent certain diseases and improve your mood. F.In contrast, those preloading once a day or never, lost just 1.76 pounds. G.So kids should drink more water instead of coke to keep healthy.
Art museums are places where people can learn about various cultures .The increasingly popular “design museums” that are opening today ,however ,perform quite a different role .Unlike most art museums ,the design museum shows objects that are easily found by the general public .These museums sometimes even place things like fridges and washing machines in the center of the hall. People have argued that design museums are often made use of as advertisements for new industrial technology. But their role is not simply a matter of sales—it is the honoring of excellently invented products. The difference between the window of a department store and the showcase in a design museum is that the first tries to sell you something ,while the second tells you the success of a sale. One advantage of design museums is that they are places where people feel familiar with the exhibits .Unlike the average art museum visitors ,design museum visitors seldom feel frightened or puzzled .This is partly because design museums clearly show how and why mass-produced products work and look as they do ,and how design has improved the quality of our lives .Art museum exhibits ,on the other hand ,would most probably fill visitors with a feeling that there is something between their understanding. In recent years ,several new design museums have opened their door ,Each of these museums has tried to satisfy the public’s growing interest in the field with new ideas .London’s Design Museum ,for example ,shows a collection of mass-produced objects from Zippo lighters to electric typewriters to a group of Italian fish-tins .The choices open to design museums seem far less strict than those to art museums ,and visitors may also sense the humorous part of our society while walking around such exhibits as interesting and unusually attractive toys collected in our everyday life. 1.Showcases in design museums are different from store windows because they. A.show more technologically advanced products B.help increase the sales of products C.show why the products have sold well D.attract more people than store windows do 2.The author believes that most design museum visitors. A.do not admire mass-produced products B.are puzzled with technological exhibits C.dislike exhibits in art museums D.know the exhibits very well 3.The choices open to design museums. A.are not as strict as those to art museums B.are not aimed to interest the public C.may fail to bring some pleasure to visitors D.often contain precious exhibits
First aid is emergency care for a victim of sudden illness or injury until more skillful medical treatment is available. First aid may save a life or improve certain important signs including pulse, temperature, an unobstructed (未堵塞的) airway and breathing. In minor emergencies, first aid may prevent a victim’s condition from worsening and provide relief from pain. First aid must be done as quickly as possible. In the case of the badly injured, a few minutes can make the difference between complete recovery and loss of life. First-aid measures depend upon a victim's needs and the provider's level of knowledge and skill. Knowing what not to do in an emergency is as important as knowing what to do. Improperly moving a person with a neck injury, for example, can lead to lifelong disability. Despite the variety of possible injuries, several suggestions should be followed if first aid applies to all emergencies. The first step is to call for professional medical help. The victim, if sensible, should be reassured that medical aid has been requested, and asked for permission to provide any first aid. Next, assess the scene, asking other people or the injured person’s family or friends about details of the injury or illness, any care that may have already been given, and pre-existing conditions such as high blood pressure and heart trouble. The victim’s medical card should be checked that describes special medical conditions. Unless the accident scene becomes unsafe or the victim may suffer further injury, do not move the victim. First aid requires rapid assessment of victims to determine whether life-threatening conditions exist. One method to assess a victim’s condition is known as the ABC, which stands for: A-Airway: Is it open and unobstructed? B-Breathing: Is the person breathing? Look, listen, and feel for breathing. C-Circulation (循环): Is there a pulse (脉搏)? Is the person bleeding badly? Check skin color and temperature for additional indications of circulation problems. 1.It is very important in first aid to_______. A.know what to do and what not to do according to the condition of the victim B.spend a few minutes making the difference between recovery and death C.move the injured person from the scene of accident immediately D.make it clear what illness the victim has had 2.Which of the following practices is NOT right in the first aid? A.Checking whether the victim is breathing. B.Checking whether the victim is bleeding. C.Waiting for medical treatment before giving first aid. D.Telephoning a hospital at once. 3.The underlined word “indications” in the last paragraph means _____. A.injures B.instruments C.treatments D.signs 4.This passage mainly tells us _______. A.the history and skills of first aid B.basic knowledge about how to give first aid C.some knowledge to help anyone who may be injured in an accident D.that first aid is dangerous to those who do not know how to do it
Iceland is a large island. In fact, it’s the world’s 18th largest island. Most of the population, however, lives in the southwestern part of the country, in or around the capital city of Reykjavik. By its very name, you’d expect Iceland to be mostly ice. Looking at Iceland on a map, you’ll notice it sits just outside the Arctic Circle. Despite this location and its name, Iceland actually has a temperate climate, because it is warmed by the Gulf Stream. The Gulf Stream also helps keep Iceland’s coastal ports ice-free through the winter. There is plenty of ice on Iceland, though. The country consists of a large plateau(高原)that includes fields of sand, mountains and glaciers. Over 60% of Iceland is tundra(苔原). About 14% of Iceland is lakes and glaciers. Only about 24% of the country has plants or vegetation of any kind, which covers a vast area in the south of the country. Iceland was settled in the late 800s and early 900s by Norsemen from the Scandinavian country of Norway. Other settlers also came from Ireland and Scotland. From the 13th century up until 1918, Iceland was part of the Norwegian and later Danish monarchies. For most of that time, the small Icelandic population depended upon fishing and farming to make a living. For hundreds of years, Iceland was one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world. After World War II, international aid and industrialization of the fishing industry turned Iceland into one of the wealthiest countries in the world. In 1994, Iceland became part of the European Economic Area(经济区), which allowed its economy to grow even more. Iceland boasts one of the youngest islands in the world. Surtsey rose out of the ocean during a series of volcanic eruptions between 1963 and 1968. Today, only scientists who study the growth of new life can occasionally visit the volcanic island of Surtsey. 1.What can we know about Iceland according to the passage? A.It lies in the Arctic Circle. B.Its capital city is very crowded C.Many people live in the east. D.It has a fairly mild temperature. 2.What is mainly talked about in the third paragraph? A.Iceland’s history. B.Iceland’s geography. C.Iceland’s economy. D.Iceland’s politics. 3.What can we infer about Surtsey from the last paragraph? A.People live on fishing. B.No human beings live there at all. C.There are many visitors. D.Science is developing fast there.

The lunches aren't particularly challenging to prepare. My daughters are content with the food in their lunch box.1. There's no good reason for my annoyance. And then one morning a thought suddenly came into my mind-I am so lucky. Within seconds, those four words bloomed throughout my awareness.2.I am so lucky to live in a home with electricity, running water, and a functional refrigerator.I am so lucky to live near a grocery store with a plentiful selection of fresh food and snacks and so lucky to have enough money to afford them.I am so lucky to have two daughters who are healthy enough to eat and digest the food I send with them. I can't tell you where this sudden burst of gratitude came from, but I do know this:that small shift immediately made my morning lunch routine extremely easier.Rather than feeling impatient and annoyed,I felt calm and pleased.Rather than mentally complaining through the whole morning,I was able to appreciate my situation.3. I am so grateful for peanut butter.Thank goodness for this magical source of protein that my daughters will actually eat.And jelly, sweet, sweet, jelly.I can't forget sliced bread-oh,the magic of sliced bread!Imagine if I had to cut those slices myself each morning? 4. Why is poverty so difficult to overcome? Why are poorer people less likely to spend money on their own learning and ability development, but more likely to be addicted to television and video games? In the past,a poor person was normally considered to have bad virtue or have no ambition. The Nobel Prize winner Banerjee corrects such views and explains the truth behind the poor. Poor people tend to live with more worries in their lives,he said,so they need tools such as televisions, cell phones, junk food and video games to get rid of worries more than others. But learning something often takes a lot of time and money to get rewards, while the poor are often impatient due to economic(经济的)reasons, and their life in the meantime is getting more boring. Banerjee's research has found that the poor often need to borrow short-term loans(贷款).Thus, the poor tend to take higher financial risks-they often have unstable incomes and are unable to get money to start a business from banks,so they rely more on these high-interest loans. And these small loans put a brake on their savings against risks. How could the poor step into the middle class?Maybe starting a business is a way out.But for the extremely poor,it's impossible to get help from banks to start a business. In most cases,a more practical option is getting a job in government agencies because comparatively speaking, government jobs are very stable, which give the poor the opportunities lo be hired for the long term,to increase the“bandwidth(带宽)”of their thinking, and thus making it possible for families to move from poverty to the middle class. What's the role of government then? When the market can't solve a problem, the government will solve it.And the problem behind the poor is actually the failure of the market. The poor often lack the necessary information to make the right choices and they often carry too much responsibility for their survival to make the best choices. In this sense,Banerjee's research provides a new perspective for governments to understand poverty,so that policies can be tailored to reduce poverty and eventually remove it. 1.What do the poor need to improve their ability according to Banerjee? A.Ambition. B.Money. C.Guidance. D.Patience. 2.What will probably cause the poor to face financial risks? A.The high-interest loans. B.Their small incomes. C.The financial policies. D.Their educational backgrounds. 3.What may be a right choice for the poor to get out of poverty? A.Setting a high goal.. B.Working as civil servants. C.Opening their mind. D.Seeking support from banks. 4.What can the government do to get rid of poverty? A.Adjust the policy. B.Control the market. C.Do more research. D.Offer enough information.
For decades,Americans have been sorting their trash believing that most plastic could be recycled. But the truth is that the vast majority of all plastic produced can't be or won't be recycled. In 40 years, less than 10% of plastic has been recycled. A news programme Frontline,by NPR and the PBS,found that oil and gas companies- the makers of plastic-have known that all along, even as they spent millions of dollars telling the American public the opposite. The plastics industry officials said the industry is providing money for new technology that they believe will get recycling plastic up to scale. The goal, they said,is to recycle 100% of the plastic they make in 5 years. But the more plastic is recycled, the less money the industry will make by selling new plastic. And those profits have become increasingly important.Companies have told shareholders(股东)that profits from using oil and gas for transport are expected to decline in coming years with the increasing use of electric cars. The industry leaders expect oil and gas demands from the chemical industry will be much greater than the demand from the transport side in the coming decade.Plastic production overall is now expected to rise three times by 2050,and once again, the industry is spending money on advertisements and public relations to promote plastic recycling. Plastic is now more common than it's ever been and harder to recycle.Gas prices remain at historic lows, making new plastic cheaper than recycled plastic. And the industry now produces many more different-and more complex-kinds of plastics that are more costly to sort and in many cases can't be recycled at all.Efforts to reduce plastic use are mounting nationwide, but any plan to slow the growth of plastic will face an industry with billions of dollars of future profits to lose. 1.What do we know about the goal of 100%plastic recycling? A.It's modest. B.It's achievable. C.It's urgent. D.It's unreal. 2.How will the oil and gas companies make more profits in the following years? A.By selling electric cars. B.By adding emphasis on recycling. C.By increasing plastic production. D.By meeting the needs of transport. 3.What does the underlined word"mounting"in paragraph 4 probably mean? A.Increasing. B.Working. C.Failing. D.Decreasing. 4.What may be the best title for the text? A.Should Plastic Be Recycled? B.Can Plastic Waste Be Handled? C.Recycle Plastic or Sell More? At thirteen, I was diagnosed (诊断) with a kind of attention disorder. It made school difficult for me. When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks, I could not. In my first literature class, Mrs. Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all within 45 minutes. I raised my hand right away and said, ''Mrs. Smith, you see, the doctor said I have attention problems. I might not be able to do it. '' She glanced down at me through her glasses, ''You are not different from your classmates, young man. '' I tried, but I didn’t finish the reading when the bell rang. I had to take it home. In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Lous Braile. He lived in a time when the blind couldn't get much education. But Louis didn't give up. Instead, he invented a reading system of raised dots (点), which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind. Wasn't I the ''blind'' in my class, being made to learn like the ''sighted'' students? My thoughts, spilled out and my pen started to dance. I completed the task within 40 minutes. Indeed, I was not different from others; I just needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way out of his problem, why should I ever give up? I didn't expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs. Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day-with an ''A'' on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words, ''See what you can do when you keep trying? '' 1.Why didn't the author finish the reading in class? A.Because he didn't like the teacher. B.Because he was not fond of literature. C.Because the class room was too noisy. D.Because he got a kind of attention disorder. 2.What can we learn about Louis Braille from the passage? A.He couldn't see and read for the whole life. B.He got a good education at school. C.He made an invention which helps the blind. D.He managed to cure his blindness. 3.What's Mrs. Smith's attitude to the author in the classroom? A.She encouraged him. B.She looked down on him. C.She sympathized(同情) him. D.She was angry with him. 4.What can we learn from the passage? A.Keep trying, and you can do it. B.Ways to overcome attention disorder. C.How to be a great teacher. D.What should you do as a blind.
We have most friends at the age of 26 after having spent the first quarter of our lives building up our friendship circle, new research has claimed. The research into friendship shows that our social circle peaks at 26 years and 7 months, at which we typically have five close friends.Women are most popular at 25 years and 10 months, with men hitting the highest friendship point a little later at 27 years and 3 months. The research, by Forever Friends, shows that about a third of adults meet their closest friends while at school, with about a fifth saying they meet them at work. Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter now also play a major role in building new friendship. The research points out that 25 to 34yearolds make 22 friends via Facebook, compared to 18 to 24yearolds who make 12, and 35 to 44yearolds who make just four. Forever Friends' relationship coach Sam Owen says, “It is no coincidence that over a third of us meet our best friends at school. It is a key time in our lives when friendship is growing through sharing notes, giving gifts, seeing each other regularly and laughing a lot. As adults we can often forget how powerful these small things are and how the little things can make a difference.” Later in life we find ourselves losing friends. Over half of us lose friendship through moving, while 36% say that over time they grow apart from close pals. Having children also causes 19% to drift away from childhood friends. With growing pressure being put on friendship these days,it's important to make time for our friendship. 1.How many friends can a 20yearold college student make via Facebook? A.4. B.12. C.18. No one thought that the RMS Titanic would sink on its first time at sea. But in 1912, the ship hit an iceberg and sank during the night. No one knew exactly where it had sunk. Even if someone had known, it was 12,500 feet (3.8 km) underwater. To search for the Titanic so deep in the water seemed impossible. But, 73 years later, Dr. Robert Ballard thought he had found a way to go that deep. In 1985, Ballard set out to find the Titanic. He would use an unmanned submarine(无人驾驶的潜水艇)called Argo. Ballard’s research team controlled it from a ship on the surface. Argo had video cameras and lights on it. This let Ballard see the ocean floor. Argo searched for signs of the Titanic. For many days and nights, Ballard and his teammates found nothing but sand and sea life. Time was running out. Ballard had only four days left before he had to return his boat. He knew this would be his only chance. Then, Ballard was awakened by one of his men. It was just after one o’clock in the morning. He rushed to the control room. On a screen was the view of one of the Titanic's boilers. They had found it! Argo took amazing pictures of the ship. Ballard and his teammates found that the huge ship was in pieces. The debris was spread across one square mile (2.6 km2) of the ocean floor. They saw teacups, bottles, shoes, and other belongings(所有物)of the passengers. During his career, Ballard has made more than 100 trips underwater. He has done much to teach children about the oceans. But, he will always be thought of as the man who found the Titanic. 1.Why was it difficult to find the Titanic? A. Its size was huge. B. It was deep under the sea. C. It had been broken into pieces.
