A Mother’s Love

My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment. She cooked for students and teachers to support the family.

There was one day during elementary school (小学) when my mom came over to say hello to me. I was so embarrassed.

How could she do this to me? I ignored her, threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school one of my classmates said, “Your mom only has one eye!”

I wanted to bury myself. I also wanted my mom to just disappear. I confronted (面对) her that day and said, “If you’re only going to make me a laughing stock, why don’t you just die?”

My mom did not respond. I didn’t even stop to think for a second about what I had said, because I was full of anger. I took no notice of her feelings at all.

I wanted to be out of that house, and have nothing to do with her. So I studied really hard, and got a chance to go abroad for further education.

Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. I had kids of my own. I was happy with my life, my kids and the comforts. Then one day, my mother came to visit me. She hadn’t seen me in years and she didn’t even meet her grandchildren.

When she stood by the door, my children laughed at her, and I shouted at her for coming over uninvited. I screamed at her, “How dare you come to my house and scare my children! GET OUT OF HERE! NOW!!!”

And to this, my mother quietly answered, “Oh, I’m so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address.” and she was soon out of sight.

One day, a letter regarding a school reunion (同学聚会) came to my house. So I lied to my wife that I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went to the old house just out of curiosity.

My neighbors said that she died. I did not shed a single tear. They handed me a letter that she had wanted me to have.

Camping Tips

Camping offers the quietness of escape.1.Because exercise and the beauty of nature can help people relax from their busy life.

Whether you're in the woods, in the desert, or climbing mountains, you'll want to keep some survival skills in mind to make sure of a safe trip.2.Different terrains (地势) carry different challenges. For example, putting up a tent on sand is very different from setting it up on land, and if you don't have the right equipment, you could find yourself sleeping under the stars on a windy beach.

3.For example, everything from poisonous (有毒的) plants to dangerous wildlife. As you plan your trip, ask an outdoors expert at your local sporting goods store for advice, go online to research where you'll be going, or find some books in the library.

A day or so before you leave, check local weather forecasts, so you won't end up in the path of a hurricane, flooding or other natural disasters.4.Besides, it will also help you know whether to give up the area.

If you hike to your campsite, practise walking with your fully packed backpack to get an idea of how the pack fits. This helps to prevent the case when you are too tired to walk with it. It's also a good idea to practice walking in the shoes you'll be wearing.

5.If you're hiking in far areas with no dustbins, you'll need to carry out your rubbish and other things. Make this easier by packing as lightly as you can.

A.Know the camping environment.

B.Taking enough money with you is necessary.

C.Remembering a hiking trip will bring you much pleasure.

D.You'll also need to be prepared for any possible dangers.

E.Knowing the weather will help you find out how you can prepare.

F.And remember that saying “Take only pictures. Leave only footprints”

G.If it's combined with (与……结合) the exercise of a hiking trip, it's good for body and mind.

Researchers at UCLA Medical Center found that a 12-minute bed-side visit with a dog can help reduce anxiety levels by 24 percent in heart failure patients, compared to a 10 percent drop when patients had a visit from a human volunteer, and no drop in patients who had no visit.

Results of the 76-patient study were presented last week. The study was supported by a non-profit (非盈利)organization which promotes human-animal interaction and connection. In the study, effects of dog and volunteer visits were compared with those of volunteers only, and with patients who had no visits and stayed at rest. Patients were asked to answer a list of questions before and after the visits. The results suggested improved heart function, and the most obvious reaction was seen in anxiety levels.

“The first thing you notice is that the patient’s facial expression, changes to a smile and the pressure of the world seems to be lifted off their shoulders,” study author Kathy Cole said. Feelings of disappointment and helplessness are common among heart patients, Cole said, and just three nights in a hospital is enough to make some patients feel anxious and uncomfortable. During the visit, the furry friend is allowed to lie on the bed next to the patient with its head within two feet of the patient’s. Most patients petted the dog, while others talked about the dog with human volunteers in conversation.

Dogs used in the study are specially trained dogs that go through a series of trainings. There are different kinds of dogs. Researchers used everything from Bernese mountain dogs to small schnauzers. However, a dog doesn’t have to be specially trained to have a calming effect on a person. In fact, the animal doesn’t even have to be a dog in order to help. “As long as the animal has meaning to the patient, or a relationship with the patient, it can help calm the patient,” Cole said.

1.We learn from the text that heart patients benefit most from visits by___________.

A.a volunteer on his own B.a well-trained dog alone

C.a non-profit organization D.a volunteer with a dog

2.The study shows that, for heart patients, __________.

A.their recovery depends on contact with animals

B.their heart pressure reduces if they stay at rest

C.their contact with animals improves their condition

D.their anxiety is reduced if they stay longer in hospital

3.According to Cole, the change of patients’ expression on the face indicates that_________.

A.they are mentally comforted B.they are happy with the experiment

C.their treatment time may be shortened D.their heart function is returning to normal

4.This report concentrates on__________.

A.the treatment of heart disease B.the cure power of animals

C.the relationship between dogs and humans D.the promotion of human-animal interaction

Fifteen years ago, I took a summer vacation in Lecce in southern Italy. After climbing up a hill for a panoramic(全景的) view of the blue sea, white buildings and green olive trees, I paused to catch my breath and then positioned myself to take the best photo of this panorama.

Unfortunately, just as I took out my camera, a woman approached from behind, and planted herself right in front of my view. Like me, this woman was here to stop, sigh and appreciate the view.

Patient as I was, after about 15 minutes, my camera scanning the sun and reviewing the shot I would eventually take, I grew frustrated. Was it too much to ask her to move so I could take just one picture of the landscape? Sure, I could have asked her, but something prevented me from doing so. She seemed so pleased in her observation. I didn’t want to mess with that.

Another 15 minutes passed and I grew bored. The woman was still there. I decided to take the photo anyway. And now when I look at it, I think her presence in the photo is what makes the image interesting. The landscape, beautiful on its own, somehow comes to life and breathes because this woman is engaging with it.

This photo, with the unique beauty that unfolded before me and that woman who “ruined” it, now hangs on a wall in my bedroom. What would she think if she knew that her figure is captured(捕捉) and frozen on some stranger’s bedroom wall? A bedroom, after all, is a very private space, in which some woman I don’t even know has been immortalized(使……永存). In some ways, she lives in my house.

Perhaps we all live in each others’ spaces. Perhaps this is what photos are for: to remind us that we all appreciate beauty, that we all share a common desire for pleasure, for connection, for something that is greater than us.

That photo is a reminder, a captured moment, an unspoken conversation between two women, separated only by a thin square of glass.

1.What happened when the author was about to take a photo?

A.A woman blocked her view. B.Her camera stopped working.

C.Someone asked her to leave. D.A friend approached from behind.

2.According to the author, the woman was probably_______.

A.losing her patience B.enjoying herself

C.waiting for the sunset D.thinking about her past

3.In the author’s opinion, what makes the photo so alive?

A.The rich color of the landscape. B.The perfect positioning of the camera.

C.The soft sunlight that summer day. D.The woman’s existence in the photo.

Three years before, I visited the Great Wall with my parents. In the way to the Great Wall, we met a foreign lady. She was happily handing out pencils to friendly students which were talking with her. My mother was asked me to chat her.

Without the second thought, I begin to talk about the warm weather with her. We quickly became friend. I learned that she came to China by herself, so she didn’t feel lonely with so many kind people around. Thought highly of my spoken English, she gave me a pencil made in Canada.

This could be the perfect gift for the partner, who embarrasses you on the dance floor. Smart socks, which can teach to dance, may be the answer for anyone with two left feet.

The socks have been developed as a running tool to help runners improve their skills. Thanks to the socks, users can accurately record not only how far and fast they run but also how well. It means the user maximizes their performance, and reduces damage to body and prevents hurt. The hi-tech socks are made of special fibers that watch the movements of your feet. They look, feel and can be washed like normal clothes.

Sensors (传感器) record each movement and send it by an ankle transmitter (脚踝发射器) to a smart phone. Then a “virtual coach” application shows the information and can tell the user what they are doing wrong, and help to improve skill in any task with feet.

The socks should be useful to athletes and weekend joggers. “People think running is so easy and of course everybody can do it but not necessarily safely and well,” Dr. Davide Vigano said. A recent study showed that between 60 and 80 percent of runners got hurt per year. This is pretty much more than any other human activity. Researchers say the technology can also be developed to teach people how to dance, play sports such as golf, or even to help to teach women to walk better in high heels.

Mr. Vigano said, “People could all benefit from the idea. We have had interest from all sorts of sports, like skiing, football, cycling and golf. Anything where you have to use your feet can use it. It could even be put in high heels to help women walk in them safely.”

Socks are just the start, and the technology could be used in gloves, hats and boots. The socks, anklet and software package, are expected to be sold for around120, which will go on sale in March.

1.What does the underlined part “anyone with two left feet” refer to?

A.People who are disabled.

B.People who are interested in dancing.

C.People who are not good at dancing.

D.People who invented the socks.

2.What’s special about fibers that the socks are made of?

A.They feel much softer than normal clothes.

B.They can monitor the movement of feet.

C.They are expensive to produce.

D.They act as a smart phone for users.

3.Which of the following is NOT mentioned about the socks?

A.They can improve the skill of running.

B.They can help women walk better in high heels.

C.They can teach people to dance well.

D.They can be worn for days without washing.

4.According to Dr. Vigano, ________.

A.everyone can make good use of the smart socks

B.users can run as fast as they like with the socks

C.60 to 80 percent of runners would like to buy the smart socks

D.no runners will get hurt, thanks to the socks

Businesses are witnessing a difficult time, which has in turn produced influence on consumers, desire to go green. However, shoppers are still laying stress on environmental concerns.

Two thirds of customers say that environmental considerations inform their purchases to the same degree as they did a year ago, while more than a quarter say that they are now even better aware of the environmental effect on what they buy.

This may help to influence how shops store goods on their shelves. And the companies should still make efforts to become more environmentally friendly. Two out of three people think it is important to buy from environmentally responsible companies, with about one in seven saying that they had even decided to take their custom elsewhere if they felt a company’s environmental reputation was not good enough.

Harry Morrison, chief executive (主管) of the Carbon Trust, sympathizes: “I understand this situation where survival is very important now. But from environmental considerations, the clock is ticking — we don’t have much time. In addition, cutting carbon has an immediate effect as costs drop and a medium-term benefit for the brand.”

Larger companies have an extra motivation to look at reducing their carbon footprint, as new rules next year will require businesses to buy carbon allowances to make up for their emissions (排放). Those that have taken early action will have a head start. More than two thirds of consumers are not clear about which companies are environmentally responsible. This suggests that firms that are able to relay clearly their message to the public will be in a pole position to attract shoppers.

The Carbon Trust believes that it can help by informing customers about the good work companies are doing. “When companies are granted (授予) the standard, they can use a logo (标识) in all their marketing which makes it clear that they are working towards cutting emissions,” Mr. Morrison said.

1.What’s the main idea of the passage?

A.Businesses are finding ways to send their message to the shoppers.

B.Companies will soon get information about cutting carbon emissions.

C.Firms are making efforts to encourage customers to keep goods at home.

D.Firms are urged to cut carbon emissions by shoppers, environmental awareness.

2.The underlined word “inform” in Paragraph 2 probably means “      ”.

A.affect B.change

C.disturb D.reject

3.According to Harry Morrison, businesses       .

A.will benefit from cutting carbon emissions

B.should buy carbon allowances for shoppers

C.are required to make up for their carbon emissions

D.have encouraged shoppers to take their custom elsewhere

4.We can learn from the passage that businesses will       .

A.have a strong desire to reduce costs

B.use the same logo in their marketing

C.gain advantages by taking early action

D.attract more shoppers by storing goods

In 1977, a University of Oxford statistician named Richard Peto pointed out a simple yet puzzling biological fact: we humans should have a lot more cancer than mice, but we don’t.

Dr. Peto’s argument was simple. Every time a cell divides, there’s a small chance it will gain a mutation(突变) that speeds up its growth. Cells that accumulate (聚集) several of these mutations may become cancerous. The bigger an animal is, the more cells it has, and the longer an animal lives, the more times its cells divide. We humans undergo (经历) about 10,000 times as many cell divisions as mice—and thus should be far more likely to get cancer.

A number of scientists have assumed that large, long-lived animals must have evolved extra cancer-fighting weapons. Otherwise, these species would die out.

Dr. Joshua D. Schiffman, an oncologist (肿瘤学家)at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, reviewed zoo records on the deaths of 644 elephants and found that less than 5 percent died of cancer. By contrast, 11 percent to 25 percent of humans die of cancer.

To understand the elephants’ defenses, the scientists investigated a gene that is vital to preventing cancer called p53. The protein encoded by the gene monitors cells for damage to the DNA they contain. Dr. Schiffman and his colleagues found that elephants have evolved new copies of the p53 gene. While humans have only one pair of p53 genes, the scientists identified 20 pairs in elephants.

To see whether these extra copies of p53 made a difference in fighting cancer, they ran experiments on elephant cells. They treated elephant cells with damaging radiation, chemicals and UV light.

“In all cases, instead of trying to repair the damage, the elephant cells simply committed suicide” said Dr. Schiffman. He said he thought the way the elephant cells responded was a very effective way to block cancer.

Patricia Muller, an oncologist at the MRC Toxicology Unit at the University of Leicester, who was not involved in the studies, said the results, though convincing, didn’t firmly establish exactly how elephants use p53 to fight cancer. One possibility is that the extra copies don’t actually cause cells to commit suicide. Instead, they may act as decoys (诱饵) for enzymes () that destroy p53 proteins.

Dr. Muller said it was especially important to understand precisely how elephants fight cancer before trying to copy their strategies with drugs for humans.

1.What does the 2nd paragraph want to tell us?

A.Human should be more likely to develop cancer than mice.

B.Cell division can increase the speed of growth of mutations.

C.The bigger an animal is, the smaller chance of getting cancer it has.

D.Dr. Peto’s argument was not simple.

2.According to the passage, p53 is ______.

A.a protein to prevent cancer B.a gene to defend against cancer

If you work hard to have a positive attitude, you might be surprised by how much better you feel about yourself and life in general. 1. The less stress you feel, the better you will feel generally. So if you’ve been feeling tired, think about the good, put on a happy face and you just might feel better soon.

But how can you have a positive attitude when life is hard? It’s more than just turning life’s lemons into lemonade. 2. But it’s worth it. Here are some ways you can develop and maintain (保持) a positive attitude even in the midst of life’s troubles.

3.It just means being an optimist and looking for the good in things, rather than being a pessimist (悲观者) and focusing on the bad in things. Sometimes your view can make all the difference in the world.

Identify (确认) those areas of your life that might not be going so well. 4. Focus on one area at a time and think of ways you can find the positive in them.

Smile and laugh! Yes, it can be that simple. Learn to love life, no matter what’s going on. Smile at others and they will smile back at you. 5.Sometimes laughter really is the best medicine.

Exercise! Get off the couch and get moving. Being active and healthy can give you a completely different attitude to life.

A.Have fun and find the humor in life.

B.You may find it hard to stay positive in your life.

C.Having a positive attitude can take some hard work.

D.A positive attitude doesn’t mean taking no notice of life’s troubles.

E.Having a positive attitude can also reduce your stress level.

F.These are the areas likely to make you think negative thoughts.

G.Go to bed earlier so you get the sleep you need to feel positive.

A robot created by Washington State University (WSU) scientists could help elderly people with dementia (痴呆) and other limitations live independently in their own homes.

The Robot Activity Support System, or RAS, uses sensors installed in a WSU smart home to determine where its residents are, what they are doing and when they need assistance with daily activities. It navigates (定位) through rooms and around obstacles to find people on its own, provides video instructions on how to do simple tasks and can even lead its owner to objects like their medication or a snack in the kitchen.

“RAS combines the convenience of a mobile robot with the activity detection technology of a WSU smart home to provide assistance in the moment, as the need for help is detected,” said Bryan Minor, a postdoctoral researcher in the WSU School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Currently, an estimated 50 percent of adults over the age of 85 need assistance with every day activities such as preparing meals and taking medication and the annual cost for this assistance in the US is nearly $2 trillion. With the number of adults over 85 expected to triple by 2050, researchers hope that technologies like RAS and the WSU smart home will relieve some of the financial strain on the healthcare system by making it easier for older adults to live alone.

RAS is the first robot researchers have tried to incorporate into their smart home environment. They recently published a study in the journal Cognitive Systems Research that demonstrates how RAS could make life easier for older adults struggling to live independently.

“While we are still in an early stage of development, our initial results with RAS have been promising,” Minor said. “The next step in the research will be to test RAS’ performance with a group of older adults to get a better idea of what prompts, video reminders and other preferences they have regarding the robot.”

1.How does RAS serve elderly people?

A.Through sensors. B.Through objects.

C.Through a mobile robot. D.Through their daily activities.

2.What can we know about RAS?

A.It is the first robot used in daily life. B.Its function remains to be tested.

C.It can locate people and do any task. D.It can cook for owners on its own.

3.What’s Minor’s attitude toward the future of RAS?

A.Doubtful. B.Negative.

C.Optimistic. D.Uncertain.

4.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Elderly people leave the nursing home.

B.Smart Home Tests first elder-Care robot.

C.RAS, the first robot to make home smart.

D.Older adults have benefited from RAS.

Fear can be a wonderful feeling in our lives, protecting us from dangerous situations and keeping us safe. But fear can also limit our lives significantly. While it may not be conscious, fear may make us think we are unacceptable or that what we have to offer isn’t valuable. Fear may make us feel that we are not safe being ourselves.

To avoid feeling fear, we may limit our lives greatly, living in tiny boxes. Living this way gives us the illusion(假象) of safety but leaves us with an unfulfilling life of no passion. If we shine a light on many of our fears, we see they have a very limited view of what is “safe” and how to “protect” us. Many of our fears are concerned only with protecting us from humiliation(羞辱) and failure. While these fears are doing their jobs incredibly well, they are doing so with faulty and outdated programming. Many fears we have as adults are trying to protect us as they protected us when we were children. Indeed, many of our current, automatic reactions to fear were actually formed when we were children.

Even so, it’s important not to judge ourselves for feeling these types of fears. If we judge ourselves, we will bury our fears or disguise them. By denying our fears, however, we also deny our energy, creativity and passion.

So what do we do with fear? We recognize the fear for what it is a feeling we’ve experienced many times in the past and a feeling we will experience many times in the future. We become very familiar with our own particular brand of fears and how we allow them to control our lives. It is especially beneficial for each of us to become aware of the particular behavior patterns we’ve adopted when we feel fear, so we can look at our reactions with a sense of humor and compassion. Then, if we wish, we can choose a different response, which can be a scary yet very exciting experience.

1.According to the first paragraph, fear sometimes ________.

A. protect us when we’ve made mistakes

B. makes sure our feelings are not hurt

C. brings great change to our everyday life

D. makes us lose confidence in ourselves

2.According to the author, the ways we react to fear ________.

A. vary from person to person

B. have been formed since childhood

C. develop during our growth

D. will not change until we get old

3.The last paragraph mainly tells us ________.

A. what is the essence of fears

B. usual reactions we have when feeling fear

C. how to deal with fears reasonably

D. the importance of humor and compassion

4.What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Is fear managing your life?

B. Be calm when feeling fear

C. What do you fear most?

D. Passion, chance and fear

After the examination, the doctor told my parents my sight would get worse and that I would lose my sight finally. On the way home from hospital, no one said a word. One day, would I only imagine the scenery beyond the glass rather than see it?

That September, I entered middle school. Most nights I had homework that included an armful of books to read. To keep up with other children, I took great trouble to finish the task. With my nose a couple of inches from the page, I was tired easily. What’s worse, after I had read several pages on my own, the words slipped off the page into inky pools.

However, then I did not have audio books and electronic devices like kids do now. Instead, Mom volunteered to read out loud. Mom worked part time, cleaned the house, cooked and spent time with Grandma. In spite of being so busy, she showed up in my room like clockwork. She put on her reading glasses. Mom always thought those glasses made her look old. To me, she looked like a teacher.

In my room, Mom’s voice compared with the ticking of the clock. Being forced to focus on listening, I found a way to keep my marks up and compete with the other kids. When the teacher asked a question, I raised my hand with confidence. Teachers praised me for having a good memory. Reading removed my fear for my failing sight, reading also made me curious about other people’s challenges and how they managed. Though I could not use my eyes to fix on each passage, my mind lit up with every new book.

True to what the doctor said, the worst came, but thanks to Mom, my sense of hearing now allows me to “see”. This was the most precious gift from a mother to her child.

1.The author and his parents keep silent on their way home from hospital because      .

A. what the doctor said was worrying

B. the author failed in the exam

C. they were exhausted

D. they focused on the scenery along the road

2.The author manage to raise his marks in learning by      .

A. being confident

B. getting help from his teacher

C. listening attentively(专心地)

D. competing with his classmates

3.What can be inferred from the passage?

A. The author’s eyes recovered finally.

B. Reading made the author more sensitive.

C. The author’s mother quitted her job to look after him.

D. Reading helped the author a lot both academically and mentally.

4.Which of the following could be the title of the text?

A. My eyesight trouble

B. An unforgettable experience

C. My good hearing

D. A precious gift from mother

If you’ve never bought organic food, you might be wondering what’s so special about it. Is it really better for you? How does that work? This text will give you a short introduction to the subject.

Organic food is produced without the use of artificial fertilizers or pesticides (insect and bug killers) and many people buy it because they think it’s better for their health. Whether that’s true or not is still debated, but there are lots of other reasons for organic food. Intensive agriculture (集约型农业) gives us cheap and plentiful food, but it’s also one of the biggest sources of environmental pollution. According to a report by the World Resources Institute, half of all the chemical fertilizers ever produced have been used since 1984. Fertilizers — and the much more deadly pesticides and herbicides (weed killers) used with them — finally find their way into rivers and seas. Sometimes they break down harmlessly, but they’re just as likely to build up in creatures that eat them (including humans). Organic food, grown without artificial chemicals, is one way to help reduce the problem.

Many people find it puzzling that organic products are more expensive. After all, you’re doing away with expensive chemicals ... so shouldn’t they be cheaper? Organic farming is typically a more labor-intensive(劳动密集型) way of farming and that’s why it costs more. As a responsible (有责任的) consumer, it’s up to you to decide where to put your money. Are you happy to buy products that may have been grown in a harmful way? Are you willing to pay more to buy organic products that may help to protect the environment?

1.Which of the following does the author agree on?

A. Organic food is better for people’s health.

B. Organic food is better for the environment.

C. Organic food tastes better than traditional food.

D. Organic food can be produced in great amounts.

2.The underlined words “doing away with” in the last paragraph can best be replaced by “______”.

A. making use of B. getting rid of

C. keeping away from D. taking advantage of

3.What’s the author’s attitude towards organic food?

A. Doubtful. B. Uncertain.

C. Worried. D. Supportive.
