It is for fishing that has helped me improve my self-control. My study was not satisfactory because of my impatience three years ago. When seeing that, my father comes up with a good idea and taught me why to fish to overcome my shortcoming. Telling that fishing was full of funs, I followed him without hesitation. Actually, fishing turned out to be more difficult than I had expected. To grasp a skill, I tried hardly and became a skilled fisher. It is amazed that I can focus on my study now. Emotional intelligence helps us to better understand ourselves and others. It can help us make better decisions, ones that are in harmony with our true beliefs and values. But what does emotional intelligence look like in real life? In EQ Applied: The Real-World Guide to Emotional Intelligence, the author expresses his opinion on that.1.Take a look, and see whether they describe your everyday habits. You take your time. You know that emotions and feelings are temporary and that making sudden decisions leads to regrets.2. You praise. You look for the good in others. When you find it, you tell them what you appreciate and why. In doing so, you lift others up and bring out the best in them. 3. Nowadays, people often fail to keep an appointment-from a handshake deal to weekend plans. But you'd better try to keep your word in things big and small- and that helps build your reputation as both reliable and trustworthy. You say sorry. You're not afraid to apologize when you mess up. Sometimes, you even apologize when you're right because you value your relationship. You forgive and forget. 4.And if they refuse, you move on anyway-and prevent others from holding your emotions hostage. You learn from mistakes. No one can perfectly manage their emotions. But you work hard to learn from those mistakes-to study your own behavior and identify your triggers(起因).5. A.You show gratitude. B.You stick to your word. C.You are always willing to learn from others. D.Here are some of the characteristics that accompany a high EQ. E.When others apologize, you put it behind you and never bring it up again. F.Meanwhile you build habits that will help you handle those situations better the next time. G.That's why you pause before speaking or acting, especially when you recognize you're not calm.
Almost everyone has heard the expression “the calm before the storm.” It is usually used to describe a peaceful period just before a very stressful situation or a tense argument. British sailors coined the phrase in the late 1600s; they noted that before certain storms the seas would seem to become still and the winds would drop. Science has given us the reason. According to US website HowStuffWorks, a calm period occurs because many storms, tornadoes and hurricanes draw in all the warm and humid(湿热的) air from the surrounding area. As this air rises into the storm clouds, it cools and acts as “fuel for the storm, like petrol in a car”. Once the storm has taken all the energy it can from the air, it is pushed out from the top of the storm clouds and falls back down to ground level. As the air goes down, it becomes warm and dry. Warm and dry air is stable, so once it covers an area, it causes a calm period before the storm. This same process also causes the “eye of the storm” in hurricanes and tornadoes. In these conditions, the calm occurs in the center of the storm because of the strong rotating (旋转的) winds. The Weather Network has a tip for working out how far away a storm is. First count how many seconds there are between a flash of lightning and a clap of thunder, roughly three seconds equal one kilometer. So, for example, if you count nine seconds, the storm is about three kilometers away. A good method is that if your count is below 30 seconds, you should seek shelter straight away. However, due to the complexity of storm system, not all storms take place after calm. Given the right conditions, some storms announce themselves with heavy rain and fierce winds. So, your best bet is to keep yourself updated with weather reports for any predictions regarding a coming storm in your area. That's the most reliable way to predict the next display(展示) of nature's temper (脾气). 1.What is the function of Paragraph 3? A.To describe how the eye of the storm comes into being. B.To stress why tornadoes and hurricanes are destructive. C.To explain why a peaceful period occurs before some storms. D.To remind how dangerous a storm can be in certain situations. 2.If you count fifteen seconds between a lightening flash and a thunder clap, the storm may be . A.one kilometer away B.three kilometers away C.four kilometers away D.five kilometers away 3.What can we learn from the text? A.Heavy storms don't usually last long. B.It is not always quiet before a storm. C.Storms have a big influence on our life. D.Weather reports often fail to predict a storm. 4.Where is this text most likely from? A.A travel journal. B.A science fiction. C.A literature review. D.A geography magazine.
The U.S. is still out in front of global competitors when it comes to innovation (革新), but American universities-where new ideas often spread-have reason to look over their shoulders. That's especially true for technologies like 5G phone networks and artificial intelligence. In President Donald Trump's opinion, they're exactly the fields where the U.S. has to lead - and also the ones where Asia, especially China, is catching up. Universities from China get more patents than their U.S. peers in wireless communications, according to research firm GreyB Services. In AI, 17 of the top 20 universities and public research organizations are in China, with the Chinese Academy of Sciences topping the list, says the World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva. There's a special place for universities in the development of science. Universities educate future scientists and can be incubators (孵化器) for pie-in-the-sky ideas-some of which turn out to be game-changers. The list ranges from Google's search engine to DNA technology that's behind a whole industry of gene-manipulating (基因编辑) treatments. However, government aids to universities haven't been growing for more than a decade, meaning they've declined in real terms and as a share of the economy, leading to the cost increase for universities and meanwhile somehow discouraging the teaching staff from putting all their hearts into their scientific research. “If you look at the federal dollars, they've not really changed considerably,” says Stephen Susalka, head of AUTM, a technology transfer association whose members include 800 universities. “Other countries are catching up. We can't be satisfied with what we have achieved.” 1.What does the underlined phrase “look over their shoulders” in Paragraph 1 mean? A.Watch out B.Take off C.Stand up D.Hide away 2.The author mentions 5G phone networks in Paragraph 2 to show. A.Chinese universities have obtained more patents than other countries B.the Chinese government provides aids to Chinese universities C.wireless communications are changed dramatically these years D.U.S. universities may lose their lead in some high-tech fields 3.What is the main idea of Paragraph 3? A.Universities can be birthplaces of game programmers. B.Pie-in-the-sky ideas from universities can be revolutionary. C.Universities play an important role in science development. D.Gene-manipulation helps to develop DNA technology. 4.What's Stephen Susalka's attitude towards the future development of U.S universities? A.Worried. B.Disapproving. C.Positive. D.Unconcerned.
One year, a newspaper of the United States published an announcement-the Horticultural (园艺) Institute offered a reward at a high price for the pure white marigold (金盏花). The high reward attracted so many people, but in nature besides golden, the marigold is brown;it is not easy to create the white one. So after they were excited for a time, many people forgot that announcement. One normal day after 20 years, the Horticultural Institute accidentally received a letter and 100 seeds of pure white marigold. On that day the news spread like wildfire. It turned out to be an old woman of over 70 years old. The institute had always been hesitating over the fact that the letter stated with certainty that the seeds could bloom(开花) pure white marigold. Those seeds finally took root in the earth. The wonder appeared after one year: large fields of pure white marigold swung in the light wind. As a result, the old woman became a new focus. Originally, the old woman was just a flower-lover. When she happened to read the announcement 20 years ago, her heart kept beating wildly. But her eight children all opposed her decision. After all, a woman who never knew the seed genetics(遗传学) couldn't complete what the experts could never accomplish! Still, the old woman didn't change her mind and went on working without hesitation. She spread some of the most common seeds and took good care of them. A year later, when the marigold bloomed, she chose one faintest (暗淡) from those golden and brown flowers and made it wither (凋谢) naturally in order to get the best seed. The next year, she again grew them and chose the faintest from these flowers to plant Year after year, through many cycles of spring sowing and autumn harvest, the old woman's husband died; her children flew far and high; a lot of things happened in her life but only the desire to grow the pure white marigold took root in her heart. Finally, after 20 years on the day we all know, in the garden, she saw a marigold, which was not nearly white but as white as silver or snow. Such a difficult problem as even experts couldn't cope with was readily solved by an old woman who didn't understand genetics. Was it a wonder? Take root in the heart and even the most common seed can grow into a wonder! 1.Why was a great reward offered by the Institute? A.White flowers could be sold at a higher price B.Pure white marigold was more beautiful in nature C.It was very difficult to develop pure white marigold D.Scientists wanted to know how marigold grew in nature 2.What can we know about the old woman from the passage? A.She was 70 when she first read the announcement. B.She sent pure white marigold flowers to the institute. C.She got professional support from scientists. D.She kept trying for years before she succeeded. 3.The underlined word “readily” in the last paragraph probably means . A.easily B.quickly C.honestly D.luckily 4.What is the best title for the text? A.Seeds Take Root in the Heart B.White Marigold is Never Alone C.Marigolds Grow from Bravery D.White Flowers Bring Success

How to Have a Good Weekend People are pretty stressed out. 1.. Below are some relaxation tips and a few hints on how to have a good weekend. 2.. The rules for phone use over the weekend can be helpful. Maybe check your phone for texts or emails only once an hour, instead of all the time. Or turn off push notifications(通知) on your phone when you’re not working. If you want to be really daring, try leaving your phone at home during certain weekend activities, or even leaving it on airplane mode during brunch or a hang with friends. Try treating your weekend like a mini-vacation. 3.. People who do this stay in bed a little longer, or hug their special someone a little more, or spend a little more time eating and less time on housework and job responsibilities. The weekend-as-vacation mindset helps you be more connected to the present moment. Beat the “Sunday fears” by planning something fun. A lot of us fall into the trap of saving weekend work we have to complete for Sunday evening, which means the last part of our weekends can be pretty stressful and feel a lot like, well, Monday. To avoid those “Sunday fears,” maybe get those few hours of work done at some other point during the weekend, so that the last thing you do during your weekend can be something actually fun. 4.. Focus on making new memories, rather than just discussing the workweek again. We should stop viewing it as opportunities to talk about old days, but instead as opportunities to make new memories and learn things about the people you care about that you didn’t know before. Ask questions that go beyond “how was your week?” Maybe ask your friends to tell you a memory of their first date, 5., or what superhero they’d be and why. Anything is Ok but work. A.Use your phone as you like B.This actually changes our behaviors C.Take some time away from your phone D.or you quitted the job last week and why E.But they don’t know how to relax themselves F.It will make the start of the next week much better G.or the story of their favorite song and why they love it
With the arrival of the ABC(AI, big data, and cloud computing) era, AI is seemingly leading innovation(创新) trends. It’s believed that with the increasing application of deep learning algorithms(计算程序), AI will play a growing role in assisting human beings to complete various tasks in a range of fields. Domestic internet giant Baidu recently announced that its public welfare Baidu Artificial Intelligence People Searching program successfully reunited more than 10, 000 lost people with their families over the past three years, which is a good example of how technology benefits people. Baidu launched this project using its artificial intelligence(AI) face-recognition technology. Zhu Guang, senior vice president of Baidu, said, “Baidu has opened up a lot of data processing capabilities in such aspects as voice, picture, video, and natural language processing, which are all beneficial.” And in cooperation with the Ministry of Civil Affairs(民政部) and nongovernmental organizations, Baidu’s system matches the photographs provided by seekers with those in the population database to achieve highly efficient search results. After going through 200 million face-training sample photos, Baidu’s AI-based face-recognition technology has achieved a recognition accuracy rate of as high as 99.7 percent. It also supports across-age image comparisons, thus helping parents find their lost children after several years on the basis of their childhood photos. Many parents whose children were lost at a young age have only their childhood photographs, making the search difficult as features change once a child grows up. But many such lost people have been reunited with their families as AI’s face-recognition technology can match an adult with his/her childhood photograph. Baidu said it will further improve its program by deepening cooperation with the Ministry of Civil Affairs to cover all the 2,068 grassroots rescue centers, and expand the program to help more people. This innovative new technology realizes the true goal of technological progress: to make people’s lives better. Applying AI technology for public welfare not only helps people in need, but also improves efficiency and saves costs. It is also a good way for enterprises to demonstrate their corporate social responsibility and contribute to society. It is hoped that more high-tech companies will innovatively apply their technologies to help the public. 1.The first paragraph is mainly to tell us ________. A.the influence of ABC B.the importance of AI technology C.the trend of technology innovation D.the wide use of Al face-recognition 2.What can we learn about AI face-recognition from text? A.Its efficiency of search results is not satisfactory. B.Its accuracy rate greatly needs improving. C.It has trouble finding lost families only using childhood photos. D.It’ll help find more children with the support from government. 3.From the passage, we know technological progress is intended to ________. A.help people accomplish complicated tasks B.prove the companies’ devotion to society C.get people to lead a better life D.offer assistance to the disabled 4.In a newspaper, this text may appear in the section of ________. A.Science B.Health C.People D.Lifestyle
Over the past ten years, stand-up comedy(独角喜剧) clubs have become common on college campuses in America. The culture of stand-up has gotten a lot of media attention. These clubs allow students to explore their abilities and develop interests beyond their field of study. They give funny speeches, tell jokes and make humorous body movements. Their humor entertains and helps ease the stress of crowds of busy, young people. However, club member Ariella Shua says comedy is serious work. She says she has become a better observer of what is going on around her ever since. She does not go anywhere without bringing something on which she can take notes. Students write all their own materials. Then, in weekly club meetings, they try out that material to see what works and what doesn’t. So, it starts as an individual project for themselves and becomes a group effort. Last year, Harry Kuperstein joined the club and discovered it was a natural fit. Noticing the funny qualities of different situations improved his way of looking at the world. Becoming an active member also helped him work on the future skills he will need as a medical doctor. It helps him talk to patients as a doctor and make him a better public speaker. Despite the group meetings, rewrites and rehearsals, some ideas just are not funny. Club member Benjamin Monteagudo said performing in front of a group of students does not mean comedians will not receive strong criticism. Last year, they came up with an idea to keep the audience involved and get their opinions. They called it “Tomato Show”, where if they were performing very badly on stage, they just let the audience throw tomatoes at them to kind of roll with the joke. So, they spent their entire budget on a big box of 300 soft tomatoes. They gave them to the audience, and it was the best show ever. 1.Ariella Shua thinks comedy is serious work because it ________. A.has to be approved by all of the members B.takes much time and is boring sometimes C.requires her to take a lot of notes D.needs personal efforts and teamwork 2.What does the underlined phrase “a natural fit” in Paragraph 3 mean? A.convenient. B.suitable. C.funny. D.attractive. 3.Why is Tomato Show a great success? A.It allowed audience to participate and respond. B.Comedians avoided receiving strong criticism. C.Club members were very skilled in acting. D.The performance itself was very humorous. 4.What is the main idea of the text? A.The rise and fall of stand-up comedy clubs. B.The influence of stand-up comedy clubs. C.The popularity of stand-up comedy clubs. D.The future of stand-up comedy clubs.
Guana was born from a family with 7 children. His parents had two jobs to make ends meet and struggled to pay for basic expenses. Guana was once a cleaner at a school but now he is a superintendent(教育学监), leading the Byron Union School District in rural northern California. Guana always remembers when he wanted to give up, someone would encourage him. One was the cleaner at his school when he was a boy. He called her “Nike” because she wore Nike shoes. At the same time, about 65 percent said they always stayed up late. Meanwhile, 56.7 percent of interviewees said they didn’t know how to live a healthy life. Wu Feng, who works at a private company in Beijing, was warned in this year’s physical examination report about hyperlipemia, a condition which he ascribed (归因于) to his diet and the fast pace of his life and work. “At work, I usually sit in the office for hours without moving my body. And when I eat at the canteen, the food is quite oily. What’s more, I like to order fast food, such as fried chicken, at night when I work extra hours,” Wu said. A post-90s programmer Wang Ke has been seeing abnormal parameters in his medical report in the past few years. He knew he had some bad habits, but it was not easy for him to change. “I know drinking too much milk tea is unhealthy, but I couldn’t stop myself,” he said. We cannot keep sacrificing privacy and dignity to continue using the Internet. However, at the same time, new digital innovations that millions love and enjoy require our data. So what are we to do? The biggest issue with the software industry’s data collection is the span of time for which it stores information. The industry simply does not believe in a delete button. For instance, Google has records of all my locations for the last six years, and Facebook has my deleted messages from nearly 10 years ago. This kind of long-term data storage may seem harmless to some. To others, it may even be useful to know what exactly they were doing on a specific day many years ago, or recover messages from a loved one, or see how much their searching and browsing have changed over time. However, as government surveillance (监视) is emerging as a growing concern — especially in surveillance states-the long-term data storage enacted (实施) by all of the top tech companies is a dream come true for any current or future arbitrary government. A 2013 study surveying US writers found that after they learned of the NSA’s mass surveillance programs, one in six avoided writing on a topic they thought that would subject them to any kind of surveillance, and a further one in six seriously considered avoiding controversial topics. This is why we need online privacy: we have the right to be curious or conduct digit actions without constantly being tracked, or fearing future reprisals (报复). As Edwam Snowden has put it: “Ask yourself: at every point in history, who suffers the most from unjustified surveillance? It is not the privileged, but the vulnerable (弱势群体) surveillance is not about safety. It’s about control.” The world is constantly changing. It may be too difficult or even impossible to some agencies from monitoring your internet activity, but we can at least take a first step and protect ourselves from any potential or future surveillance. They will not have access to life’s diary at the click of a button, or see everywhere you have been for 10 years, or use searching or browsing history from when you were a teenager to question your character. This Digital Expiry Date offers companies the benefits of getting your data, personalizing results and still making profits, while putting some control in the user’s hands. You will not have to worry about governments or companies in the future mishandling years’ worth of information — which would limit the damage they could do. A Digital Expiry Date would maintain online innovation and profitability, while helping to prevent any future privacy disasters.
