Not all bad emotions (情感) are necessarily bad. In fact, they can direct your behaviour in useful ways. If you’re stuck in traffic, anger with the situation might motivate you to find an alternative route (线路), which will then relieve your stress. But anger is less useful if you’re in the same situation, but stuck on a motorway with no option to alter directions.

Emotions have physiological effects, such as raising the level of cortisol in your bloodstream, which can affect your health. Indeed, a new study, published in Psychology and Aging, shows that high levels of anger are associated with poor health in older people.

The Canadian study did the study on 226 adults aged 59-93. They took blood samples to assess levels of chronic (慢性的) low-grade inflammation (炎症) and asked the participants to report any age-related chronic illnesses they might have. The participants also completed a short questionnaire about the level of anger or sadness they experienced in three typical days over a one-week period.

For the analysis, the researchers considered whether age could affect the results. They found that higher levels of anger were associated with inflammation and ill health in the oldest participants (aged 80 and above), but not the youngest ones (59-79 years). Sadness was not associated with inflammation or ill health in either age group.

The study is cross-sectional, meaning that it assessed a group of people at a single point in time. To get a fuller understanding of the relationship between bad emotions and health, we need studies that follow participants for a period of time — so-called prospective observation studies. Future studies should also take into account other factors that might relate, such as other emotions, stress and personality.

Although this new research shows a link between emotion and health in older age, we do not know whether anger causes inflammation and illness or whether health problems make people angrier.

Researchers in Singapore found that eating mushrooms over twice per week could help prevent memory and language problems later in life.

According to the study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, there is a unique antioxidant (抗氧化物质) present in mushrooms that helps protect certain brain functions.

Researchers observed 663 Chinese adults aged over 60 whose diets and lifestyles were tracked from 2011 to 2017. In the study, the participants were asked how often they ate six different types of mushrooms: oyster, shiitake, white button, dried, golden and tinned. The findings showed that eating more than two shares of mushrooms per week somehow lowered the chances of mild cognitive impairment (MCi) by 50% against those who ate fewer than one share.

MCI is a condition that can make people forgetful, affect their memory and cause problems with language, attention and finding the exact position of objects in space. Changes in behavior can be not very noticeable and not serious enough to be known as dementia (痴呆).

Participants who ate more mushrooms were found to perform better in thinking and processing exams and also exhibited a faster processing speed. The advantage was reportedly more apparent in those who ate more than two shares a week or more than 300 grams.

The scientists pointed out, however, that they have yet to put up a direct link between the fungi and brain function.

The researchers also acknowledged that since this study mainly relied on self-reported information on mushroom intake and other dietary factors (因素), further studies may be required.

Still, the lead study author Lei Feng is encouraged by their findings.

“This correlation is surprising and encouraging,” Lei said.

Mushrooms are one of the richest dietary sources of ergothioneine — a matter which humans can’t make on our own.

1.What are the findings in paragraph 3 about?

A.Diets and lifestyles. B.The percent of MCI.

C.The types of mushrooms. D.The benefit of eating mushrooms.

2.What can we know about MCI?

A.It can strengthen memory. B.It can result in language problems.

C.It can make people get lost. D.It can lessen the chance of forgetfulness.

3.What is the result if students often eat more mushrooms?

A.They will take the exams much more easily

B.Their academic performance improves greatly

C.Their thinking ability is better than the majority

D.They will love communicating with others.

4.Where does the text most probably appear?

A.Scientific fiction. B.An advertisement.

C.A science report. D.Adult literature.

At 24, Tiffany Calver might worry she has already peaked (达到顶峰) as a DJ. She began DJing as a hobby, uploading mixes to her SoundCloud. Her high-energy selections soon caught the ears of the online station Radar Radio and then Drake’ s management, leading her to land many firsts.

“I just want to express myself,” she says. “I’m not interested in copying anyone else’s work; I have to be me. I love artists such as Kojey Radical whose lyrics (歌词) are so aware of human experiences. There are also great examples set by artists from the older generation like Ghetts. Ghetts actually cooperated with Kojey on Black Rose, which is all about colourism — prejudice against darker-skinned women — a huge problem in the black community (团体).”

“It’s really exciting to see the BBC taking notice of a new generation of tastemakers in our community. I remember a time when there was no place for younger voices. Snoochie Shy is taking on the 1Xtra rap (说唱) from Monday to Thursday and Charlie Sloth is being replaced by two women, which is huge for one of the biggest radio stations in the country. I think it’ll have a big effect and encourage more women to follow suit.”

“It was great to hear women such as Rico Nasty, who is aggressive, succeed last year because, even as a DJ, I hate it when people tell me I have to ‘play something for the ladies’. There’s such a rich history of unapologetic women in hip-hop, from Lil’ Kim to Cardi B and Nicki Minaj. Even rappers such as Noname, who might not have as much of an aggressive sound but can talk about politics in the same song, are not afraid to show all the layers there are to being a woman. It isn’t just soft and feminine.”

1.We learn from paragraph 2 that Kojey Radical and Ghetts ________.

A.are a new generation B.are in the same station

C.dare to express themselves D.live in the same community

2.What does Calver think of Charlie Sloth’s replacement?

A.She feels it is unbelievable. B.It is a heavy blow for many men.

C.It allows women to change jobs. D.She holds positive attitude towards it.

3.Which of the following words can describe the women mentioned in the last paragraph?

A.Brave. B.Creative.

C.Selfless. D.Considerate.

4.What is the text mainly about?

A.The success in music. B.The new voice of rap.

C.The different trend in DJ. D.The influence of a woman.

Is there a best way to pack clothes? The following ideas are of great help to those who are always on the way.

Where to start?

1. Once you see how much you lay in front of you, be brave and reduce about a third. Because the truth is like your wardrobe, you never seem to use as much as you take.

How to deal with clothing?

Start with your shoes. Put underwear or socks inside them to hold the shape of your shoes. Thus, you can make use of every square inch of space. Once your shoes are firmly in place, fill small gaps with very soft items. 2. .

Lay out the first clothes with one end inside the suitcase and the other end dropping over the edge. Put the next clothes on top of this, but place them the other way around. 3. In this way, you’ll get another flat layer soon Finally, one by one, fold the clothes back in.

Where to put non-clothing?

4. These awkward shaped items are difficult to pack. You’d better put them towards the middle give maximum protection. Remember.to double bag your toiletries kit (洗漱袋) to avoid spotting your clothes.

Top tips:

If you take a belt, slip them along the inside of your case. 5. That will take more space. Next, use the hard shape of the case to offer protection. Leave your toiletries kit in your suitcase, when you return home. It’s ready for the next time you travel.

A. Don’t roll belts up.

B. Be sure to put away socks.

C. This idea will create a flat first layer.

D. And then continue laying other clothes.

E. That will make the job a whole lot easier.

F. Lay everything you want to take with you on the bed.

G. Non-clothing items are things like books, toothbrushes and cameras.

It sounds almost too good to be truebut a new study on sleeping brains suggests that listening to languages while you sleep can actually help you to learn them

For the studyresearchers played recordings of foreign words and their translations to subjects enjoying slow-wave sleepa stage when a person has 1ittle consciousness of their environmentTo ensure that the results were not compromised by foreign language words that subjects may have had some contact with at some point in their waking livesresearchers made up totally nonexistent foreign words

When the subjects woke upthey were presented with the made-up words again without their translationsThe subjects were then asked to imagine whether this made-up word indicated an object that was either smaller or largerThis vague(模糊的)way of testing their understanding of the words is an approach that is supposed to tap into the unconscious memory

Unbelievablythe subjects were able to correctly classify the words in this way at an accuracy rate that was 10 percent higher than random chanceThat’s not a rate high enough to have them suddenly communicating in a foreign tonguebut it is enough to suggest that the brain is still absorbing information on some leveleven during sleep

Researchers have long known that sleep is important for memorybut previously its role in memory was thought to relate only to the preservation and organization of memories acquired during wakefulnessThis is the first time that memory formation has been shown to be active during sleep

In other wordsour brains are listening to the worldand learning about iteven when our conscious selves are not present

The next step for researchers will be to see if new information can be 1earned quicker during wakefulness if it was already presented during sleepIf soit could forever change how we train our brains to learn new thingsSleep learning might become a widespread practice

1.Why did researchers use some made-up words in the study?

A.To guarantee the accuracy of the test result

B.To increase the difficulty of testing information

C.To avoid the subjects cheating in the experiment

D.To test if our brain are good at learning something new

2.What were the subjects asked to do in the study?

A.Classify what they heard by size

B.Make up a word to represent“large”or“small”

C.Repeat the words they heard in the sleep

D.Imagine the meanings of the made-up words

3.What conclusion did researchers draw from this study?

A.Sleep is necessary for a good memory

B.Memory formation goes on during sleep

C.Listening during sleep is good for our brain

D.Learning languages in sleep has better effects

4.What will be the researchers’next plan?

A.To train people how to learn during sleep

B.To prove the existence of unconscious memory

C.To dig out the reason for unconscious learning

D.To study the effect of sleep learning on conscious learning

The world is a greener place than it was 20 years ago. Recent NASA satellites data(2000—2017) have shown that human activities in China and India dominate this greening of the planet, thanks to ambitious tree-planting programmes in China and intensive agriculture(集约农业) in both countries.

The researchers from Boston University found that global green leaf area has increased by 5 percent in the new century, an area equal to all of the Amazon rainforest. China alone accounts for 25% of the global net increase in leaf area with only 6.6% of global vegetated area. China's contribution comes in large part from its programmes to conserve and expand forests, taking up about 42 percent of the greening. The greening from farmlands in China is about 32%, but that in India is about 82%.

Rama Nemani, a research scientist at NASA's Ames Research Centre and a co-author of the study said, ''When the greening of the Earth was first observed, we thought it was due to a warmer, wetter climate and fertilisation from the added carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. But with data from NASA satellites, scientists realised that humans are also contributing, which was all against our expectations. ''

Nemani sees a positive message in the new findings. ''Once people realise there is a problem, they tend to fix it, '' he said. ''In the 1970s and 1980s in India and China, the situation around vegetation loss was not good. In the 1990s, people realised it, and today things have improved. Humans are incredibly resilient. That is what we see in the satellite data. ''

However, the researchers rang bells as well. They said that the gain in global greenness did not necessarily make up for the loss of natural vegetation in regions like Brazil and Indonesia.

1.What is the second paragraph mainly about?

A.The decreasing size of the Amazon rainforest.

B.China's bigger contribution to global greening.

C.Total global green leaf area in the new century.

D.China's programmes to conserve and expand forests.

2.What surprised scientists regarding global greening?

A.Human activities. B.The level of fertilisation.

C.A warmer and wetter climate. D.Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

3.What does the underlined word ''resilient'' probably mean?

A.Good at making programmes. B.Suitable for analysing data.

C.Able to make corrections. D.Active in planting trees.

4.What does the last paragraph imply?

A.It is urgent to protect global natural resources.

B.Much remains to be done for global greenness.

C.Brazil and Indonesia lose most of their vegetation.

D.Global greenness needs all countries to work together.

After eight puppies(幼犬)were abandoned on the side of the road in Texasan animal shelter came to the rescue and brought them all the way from BrownwoodTexas to WintersvilleOhio. Their journey wasby no meansa simple one.

The puppies were first found fighting for their lives in a muddy channel. They were extremely weak and dehydrated(脱水)after being forced to protect themselves in the burning Texas sun. Once the puppies were discoveredtheir journey was far from over. They were immediately brought to what is known as a "high kill" shelterand after only a few hourswere scheduled for euthanasia. Things weren't looking good for the pups. Luckilythey were rescued once more.

“There's a group that specifically goes around to these high kill shelters and rescues the animals that are scheduled for euthanasia"said Brandi Damewoodthe JCHS Community Outreach Manager. "These guys were rescued by the Corrine T. Smith Animal Center. "

The puppies would eventually end up under the care of the Jefferson County Humane Society. This is because no-kill shelters and rescue organizations often work together to aid in urgent cases. An incredible network of shelters helping other shelters enables these miracle workers to save so many pets in danger of being put down prematurely.

"We have had a lot of other rescue groups come in and they help us get some of our animals adopted out like when we' re too full or things of that nature, so we kind of help each other out, and so this was a favor to help this particular shelter, "said Damewood.

The JCHS has appropriately titled the puppies' journey "the freedom ride". The 20-leg trip required 16 different volunteers to drive a total of 1,300 miles. But it was all worth it to save these adorable pups!

"We have a board member, Michelle Zdybicki, who is very active and involved in these transport groups, "said Damewood. "They would meet at specified stops, then the puppies would be transferred to the next driver for the next leg of the journey. "

Since arriving in Ohio, the puppies have been vaccinated and are hoping to find forever homes in the near future.

1.From the passage we know a shelter ______.

A.is a place to kill abandoned animals

B.can never kill any abandoned animal

C.is a place for abandoned animals

2.The underlined word "euthanasia" in Para. 2 most probably means______.

A.practice of killing without pain

B.medical examination for an animal

C.physical care of a baby animal

D.supplies of food and housing for animals

3.What may happen to the puppies after arriving in Ohio ?

A.They will stay in a shelter forever. B.They may be adopted soon.

C.They cannot escape being killed. D.They may continue their journey.

4.The passage mainly tells us that______.

A.volunteers worked together to find homes for abandoned puppies

B.abandoned puppies caused animal shelters too much trouble

C.eight rescued puppies journeyed 1,300 miles in "freedom ride"

D.shelters tried their best to cure eight abandoned animals in Texas

Are you sometimes stressed? Singing is a simple and effective way to reduce stress. It is beneficial mainly in the following three aspects.

Physical Benefits

1. This is especially recommended for the elders and those who have some form of disability in their voice. However, it is important to find a capable instructor to employ good singing techniques so as not to further damage vocal cords (声带) or lungs.

Singing also helps to improve your posture (姿势). Most people think that singing begins and ends with their mouth. 2. Singing practice will get you used to the proper body position of standing and help you form the good habit of standing straight.

Emotional Benefits

Singing helps in reducing your depression and lowering your stress level. When you sing, your body releases chemicals that make you feel happy, easing the tension and helping you to relax. 3.

Social Benefits

The social benefits of singing are huge. 4. So people who suffer from stage fright are advised to sing in front of family and friends before a live performance.

Singing is also very good for improving your communication skills. It is said that singing to babies helps to prepare their brains for language and may lessen the risk of language problems later in life. 5. The time spent in group singing, whether in a choir or at karaoke, creates a deep and lasting bond of friendship.

A. Try to regain your memory by singing.

B. First, it can help build up your confidence greatly.

C. When you sing, you can give your lungs a workout.

D Singing helps you to strengthen your immune system.

E. For adults, singing also enlarges your circle of friends.

F. In fact, the position of each body part affects your voice.

G. So, start to sing your favorite song next time you are feeling upset.

Starting the day on an egg could keep your blood pressure(血压) under control, research suggests. Scientists have shown that eggs produce proteins with a function similar to that of powerful blood pressurelowering drugs.

The research, from the University of Alberta in Canada, showed that when eggs come in contact with stomach enzymes() they produce a protein that acts in the same way as ACE inhibitors, but more work is needed to show the effects outside a lab and in the human body.

Earlier this month, British researchers declared that, contrary to popular beliefs, it is healthy to go to work on an egg. They concluded that the type of cholesterol(胆固醇) found in eggs has little effect on increasing heart disease risks.

Researcher Professor Bruce Griffin, from the University of Surrey, said, “The wrong beliefs linking eggeating to high blood cholesterol and heart disease must be corrected. The amount of fat in our diet has an effect on blood cholesterol that is several times greater than the relatively small amounts of cholesterol found in eggs. The UK public do not need to be limiting the number of eggs they eat. They can be encouraged to include them in a healthy diet as they are one of nature's most nutritious foods.”

The British Heart Foundation dropped its threeeggaweek limit in 2005. However, almost half of Britons believe the limit still applies.

C.to tell people how to lower their blood pressure

D.to advise people to eat as many eggs as possible

I wanted to be a journalist when I was 12 years old. I used to sit in front of the TV in my family’s living room, imitating what the presenters said on the morning shows. I knew one day I would move to New York City to work in television.

So when I got a job at one of the three big networks in New York at the age of 24, I was elated. This was where I had always wanted to be. I spent the next 12 years in a variety of roles at the same company. I had the perfect arrangement that most people thought - a job for life. “You're so lucky” was what I heard over and over again. And I was.

But I also started to notice cracks (裂缝) in the media world I had come to love so much. A new kind of competition cropped up in the form of social media and new digital media. News was changing. I knew I couldn't stay where I was; I must accept the change and be part of creating it. When I told my colleagues that I was thinking about leaving the network and going to work at an online start-up, I got a lot of crazy looks. “Why would you make such a risky move?” “What if it fails?” “You can’t be seriously considering this.”

I didn't listen to their advice because I knew not every good experience is defined(定义) by success or failure. Sometimes it’s about running the risk pushing the limits and having faith in an idea. What would the world be like today if we only acted when we could see the outcome?

Our new online company, Huffpost Live, has been on the air for several months and is doing amazingly well. I didn't listen when people told me to take the safe route. I’m proud that I didn't take the advice of the so-called experts and chose to make the change.

1.What does the underlined word “elated” in Paragraph 2 mean?

2.Why did the author leave her previous job?

A.The boredom in the media industry. B.The rapid development of new media.

C.The bad relationship with her colleagues. D.The large amount of work in the company.

3.What can we infer about the author?

A.She had no experience of failure. B.She didn't mind what others said.

C.She acted after knowing the outcome. D.She had a better understanding of success.

4.What did the author think of her decision?

A.She wasn't sure of that. B.She had taken great risks.

C.She felt regret about that. D.She made a right decision.
