I’ll never forget the day that I met my best friend. I entered into the classroom and noticed we had a new classmate. It was a girl who had long black hairs and there was big smile on her face. I thought to me, “I have to be her friend.” Late, I learned her name was Kelly. I wanted to make sure she could feel welcome, so I invited her to eat lunch with me and introduce her to as many people as possibly. It wasn’t long after she came to my home after school and became part of my family. She was always friendly and had a way of instantly made me happy on a bad day.

Do you want to learn to dance the highly expressive Spanish dance form—flamenco? 1. Learning flamenco dancing takes time, patience and determination.

The first step is to find a good teacher. 2. Talk with people who have already taken lessons from the teacher to find out if they were satisfied customers.

Once you have chosen your teacher or class you then need to buy dancing shoes. Female dancers also need a practice skirt.

3. The dance style includes special hand and arm movements, the zapateado (stepping movements that create sounds), and practice body movements. It takes a lot of practice to learn flamenco dance steps and to perform them rapidly with the music the dance requires.

As the movements become more familiar, you must learn the most important part of flamenco—dancing with heart! 4.

Once you are ready to perform, you will need a costume. In addition to dancing shoes, female dancers usually wear long dress. Male dancers often wear trousers and shirts. If you are in doubt about your costume decision, check with your teacher to find out what he or she suggests. 5. You must have the courage to let your passion for the dance shine.

A.Research lesson prices and the teacher.

B.It is very important to choose a dance skirt right.

C.This is not a dance you can learn in a day or a week.

D.Flamenco dancing can have many different purposes.

E.To win over people, you will need more than a costume.

F.In your class, you will learn how to move your whole body the flamenco way.

G.Flamenco dancers must have a deep understanding of music and dance with all their hearts.

In the space of just two years, the app Douyin, created by Beijing-based company ByteDance, has gathered more than half a billion users—around 40%of them outside China—who share short videos of themselves lip-syncing( 假唱), cooking, dancing or just being silly. What sets ByteDance apart is its success in the social media category, which is controlled by Facebook, Twitter and Snap—all Western companies.

ByteDance calls itself an artificial intelligence company. It uses machine learning and algorithms ( 算法) to figure out what people like most and give them more of what they want to see. On Douyin, people can edit and beautify 15-second videos before posting them online. The app has even made a phrase to describe people glued to their customized feeds: “shua Douyin” or “scrolling through Douyin”. Last year, the company released TikTok, the overseas version of Douyin. ByteDance’s growing video empire has made it the world’s fifth biggest app maker. ByteDance says TikTok and Douyin together have more than 500 million monthly active users.

Investors like ByteDance because its hundreds of millions of users attract a lot of advertising money. The video apps are lucrative because they attract a lot of users in their teens and 20s, who are more generous with the money. ByteDance also makes money through income sharing deals. People on TikTok, for example, can buy digital coins to give to other people on the app—like throwing money in a performer’s tip jar. ByteDance takes a cut of those earnings.

ByteDance’s founder and CEO is Zhang Yiming, a 35-year-old former Microsoft employee. People who have worked with Zhang describe him as someone who thinks deeply about technology and spends much of his free time writing code.

Like Facebook and Twitter, ByteDance is also battling fake news and inappropriate content. ByteDance promises to add thousands more employees to review content on Douyin.

1.What makes ByteDance so special?

A.It is the biggest artificial intelligence company on the earth.

B.Its app challenges similar companies’ rule in Western world.

C.It invented the social media app initially in the world.

D.It has controlled Facebook, Twitter and Snap.

2.Why is Douyin so popular?

A.It is a new generation hi-tech product.

B.It has both home and overseas version.

C.It meets the demand of people individually.

D.It is easy and totally free to operate online.

3.How does Byte Dance make a profit?

A.By charging the users.

B.By selling its artificial intelligence.

C.By forcing the users to donate.

D.By charging the advertisement.

4.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “lucrative” in Paragraph 3?

A.expensive B.profitable

C.popular D.creative

If you live in Shanghai, you might have to take a "lesson" in sorting garbage, as the city recently introduced new garbage-sorting regulations. It’s now required that people should sort garbage into four categories, namely recyclable, harmful, dry and wet waste. However, if people fail to sort their garbage properly, they can be fined up to 200 yuan. More cities are introducing similar regulations, following the practice in Shanghai. By the end of 2020, garbage-sorting systems will have been built in 46 major Chinese cities, including Beijing and Shenzhen, reported People’s Daily.

According to a study by the Policy Research Center for Environment and Economy, under the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, over 90 percent of the public believe that garbage sorting is important for the protection of the environment. However, garbage sorting is still a big problem in China. Only 30 percent of participants said they think they are adequately sorting their trash, the study noted.

According to Xinhua News Agency, it’s partly because many people lack the willingness to sort their own waste. In the past, some previous garbage regulations didn’t give clear fines for people who failed to sort garbage. "It’s a must to have a legal guarantee to promote garbage sorting." Liu Jianguo, a professor from Tsinghua University, told China Daily. He also added "the importance of the new regulations in Shanghai is to change the past voluntary action into compulsory action for everyone"

Aside from China, many other foreign countries have also introduced garbage-sorting regulations. In Japan, waste sorting has become a basic survival skill, reported Xinhua. There is a fixed time for disposal of each kind of garbage and littering can result in high fines and even jail time. In Germany too, people are asked to sort waste into specific categories, reported HuffPost. For example, in Berlin, people have yellow bins for plastic and metals and blue bins for paper and cardboard.

1.What can we learn from paragraph 1?

A.Poisonous waste belongs to four categories in sorting.

B.People will be fined not less than 200 yuan.

C.All the cities use the same regulations as Shanghai.

D.People may be put in prison because of littering in Germany.

3.What can be inferred from Liu Jianguo’s words?

A.He thinks highly of the legal regulations in garbage sorting.

B.The sorting action should be changed from compulsory to voluntary.

C.Legal guarantee is a must to promote garbage sorting.

D.There is a growing concern over garbage sorting worldwide.

4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.Shanghai Puts Garbage-sorting Into Practice

B.Regulations Are of Great Importance

C.Garbage Is Hard to Recycle Appropriately

In March, days before her 15th birthday, Ashima Shiraishi successfully climbed Horizon on Mt. Hiei in Japan. She became the first woman and youngest person ever to solve the “V15” boulder( 攀岩) problem, considered the most difficult type of problem in the sport.

Shiraishi is also the world’s youngest person to solve the V10,V13,and V14 boulder problem, which she did at ages 8, 10, and 13.

“Once I have a project in mind, I don’t really give up,” she said. “And even if my skin is looking really bad from bouldering, I’ll just get back on it.”

The New York City native first got to know the sport at age 6 when she saw park-goers climbing Rat Rock in a city park in New York City. Attracted, she started climbing it every day after school and began training at an indoor climbing gym soon after.

She won her first competition at age 7, competing against grown women climbers.

“It was mostly the movement that really attracted me because it was almost like dancing. It felt like I was dancing on the rock,” she said.

Watching Shiraishi climb is like watching a dance of mental and physical courage. At 5-foot-1 and 100 pounds, she could be considered at a physical disadvantage compared to taller climbers who can reach holds more readily. But she makes up for it with smooth movements that only a climber of small size could make.

“The most important part of climbing is not really thinking at all. Once you start thinking, you doubt yourself, and that’s the worst that could happen to you,” she said.

Shiraishi hopes to compete on the most important stage for sports, the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, where climbing will make its first official appearance.

1.When did Shiraishi start climbing?

A.After visiting an indoor climbing gym.

B.After seeing people climbing in a city park.

C.After watching a climbing competition.

D.After reading a news report about climbing.

A.Thinking about nothing. B.Encouraging yourself.

C.Receiving a lot of training. D.Entering a lot of competitions.

3.Which of the following is Shiraishi’s wish?

A.She can solve the “V15” boulder problem.

B.Climbing will become an Olympic event.

C.She can take part in the Olympic Games.

D.Bouldering will attract more young people.

4.What is the text mainly about?

A.A difficult boulder problem. B.The personal life of a teenager.

C.The popularity of bouldering. D.A successful young climber.

Living in cities is wonderful, but the cost in some of the big U.S. cities, such as New York and Los Angeles, is a big problem for living there. Fortunately, this country has many good cities where the cost of living is more affordable.

Pittsburgh,PA

Pittsburgh is a great city to have busy and noisy activities without feeling overwhelmed(不堪重负的). One of the best advantages here is the low cost of housing and other fees. Even when you live there, the view of the city from Mount Washington doesn’t get old. Three major sports teams have stadiums there, and the energy in Pittsburgh on game days is something that’s hard to find anywhere else.

Grand Rapids, MI

While the transportation costs are a bit above average, Grand Rapids makes up for that with low housing and health care costs. If you love public art and craft beer, Grand Rapids is a great choice. The city gives people a small-town feeling, with people always waving hello as you walk by. There are 1200 acres of parks within the city. If you’re looking for more water than the river offers, Lake Michigan is less than an hour away.

Knoxville,TN

Knoxville’s housing costs are below the national average. It is known as the most dog-friendly city, which is probably the best selling point a city could have. The Knoxville Museum of Art has fun classes so you can continue to learn and improve skills throughout your lifetime.

Buffalo, NY

New York City may not be affordable, but Buffalo certainly is. It’s also one of the most beautiful cities to live in with all the views next to rivers. You’ll also have one of the world’s most beautiful natural wonders, Niagara Falls, a short drive away.     Live Every Day Like It’s A Holiday

We feel great on holiday because we let go of everyday stresses and strains. 1. So whether or not you’re going away this summer, there’s plenty you can do to make sure you benefit from that holiday feeling.

Sleep like a holidaymaker

Sleep like a baby when you’re on your holidays but stay awake when you’re in your usual routine? 2. To reset your sleep pattern, avoid bringing problems to bed. That includes your phone, TV or laptop. Make sure the room is dark and cool. Aim for at least seven hours’ —just as you would on holiday.

Get moving

3. Given that exercise is cheap, healthy and reduces stress, it makes absolute sense to build it into your day. A walk will release happy hormones, and eases anxiety and mild depression.

4.

Part of the joy of going away is lingering over delicious food with families. Take up the holiday habit of sitting down as a family for at least one meal a day. Families who eat together experience less anxiety, less depression and less obesity, research has found.

Be a tourist in your own city

Part of the thrill of a holiday is the novelty of discovering a new place and doing new things. 5. At weekends, check out a new music venue, visit a different museum or have a drink in that interesting-looking pub you’re always walking past. It will get you out of routine and make you feel alive. A bit like a holiday, really.

A. Make your meals a celebration.

B. Carve out some dedicated quiet time.

C. If so, you might need to examine your sleep habits.

D. Just make sure you schedule it into your day or week.

E. But it’s also easy to be a holidaymaker in the place you live.

F. Research has even shown that vacations help health and well-being.

G. When you’re travelling, you walk around new cities without a second thought.

Dutch designer Daan Roosegaarde has spent much of his time seeking artistic solutions(解决方案)to solve our environmental problems. His past projects include "Bioluminescent(生物发光)Trees" to light streets, a "Smog-Free Tower" to clean Beijing's polluted air. and "Gates of Light". which uses the headlamps of passing cars to light up the 60 floodgates of the Afsluitdijk, a major dam in the Netherlands. Now, he is hoping to use his skills to solve a pressing global problem-space junk!

Scientists guess that there are over 500000 bits of large rubbish. To deal with the problem, Roosegaarde intends to achieve his goal by educating the public about the need of the situation and coming up with possible solutions. The plan. called the Space Waste Lab. started in October 2018 with a laser(激光)show in the Netherlands. The unique outdoor artwork of LEDs used real-time tracking information to point at pieces of space junk floating at altitudes of 200 to 20,000 kilometers. The experience was designed to make the public know more about how much space junk there are.

To find a solution, the designer has been thinking with experts. One of the projects being considered is "Shooting Stars"which attempts to reintroduce the trash to the atmosphere in a controlled way. Upon reentry. the waste would burn in the atmosphere like a shooting star. Roosegaarde envisages that if successful .burning space trash could someday replace fireworks at large public events!

In September 2018the RemoveDEBRIS satellite successfully sent a net to catch a target while orbiting at an altitude of about 300 kilometers(190 miles). Sometime this year. the capsule will set free a harpoon that has been designed to remove space trash. At the end of its taskRemoveDEBRIS will let go a sail to bring the satellite itself and hopefully some trash, back into the atmosphere where it will burn up.

1.What can we infer about Daan Roosegaarde?

A.He is too aggressive to put forward good plans.

B.He is creative in solving environmental problems.

C.He is fond of spending all of his time seeking art skills.

D.He is sensitive to art reflected in environmental projects.

2.Why was a laser show held in October 2018?

A.To confirm real-time information about space trash.

B.To show the great beauty of LEDs to common people.

C.To raise public awareness of the amount of space trash.

D.To inspire people to consider the solution to space trash.

3.What does the underlined word "envisage" in paragraph 3 probably mean?

A.Suspect. B.Demand.

C.Advise. D.Imagine.

4.What is the function of a sail?

A.Bringing the satellite to atmosphere to burn.

B.Keeping trash traveling along its own orbit.

C.Taking the satellite away from atmosphere.

D.Removing space trash out of the capsule.

In 1992, Teen Talk Barbie was released with the controversial voice fragment, “Math class is hard.” While the toy's release met with strong public reaction, this underlying assumption persists, spreading the myth that women do not thrive in science, technology, engineering and mathematic (STEM) fields due to biological inadequacies in math aptitude. However, in 2019 Jessica Cantlon at Carnegie Mellon University led a research team that comprehensively examined the brain development of young boys and girls and found no gender difference in brain function or math ability.

Cantlon and her team conducted the first neuroimaging study to evaluate biological gender differences in math aptitude of young children. Her team used functional MRI(核磁共振)to measure the brain activity in 104 young children (3-to-10-year-old; 55 girls) while watching an educational video covering early math topics, like counting and addition. The researchers compared scans from the boys and girls to evaluate brain similarity. In addition, the team examined brain maturity by comparing the children's scans to those taken from a group of adults (63 adults; 25 women) who watched the same math videos.

After numerous statistical comparisons, Cantlon and her team found no difference in the brain development of girls and boys. In addition, the researchers found no difference in how boys and girls processed math skills and were equally engaged while watching the educational videos. Finally, boys' and girls' brain maturity were statistically equivalent when compared to either men or women in the adult group.

Cantlon said she thinks society and culture are likely steering girls and young women away from math and STEM fields, as previous studies show that families spend more time with young boys in play that involves spatial cognition(空间认知). “Typical socialization can make worse small differences between boys and girls that can snowball into how we treat them in science and math,” Cantlon said. “We need to be aware of these origins to ensure we aren't the ones causing the gender inequities.”

However, this project is focused on early childhood development using a limited set of math tasks. Cantlon wants to continue this work using a broader scope of math skills, such as spatial processing and memory, and follow the children over many years.

1.What can we infer about the toy’s release?

A.It has raised a storm of applause.

B.Girls perform no worse than boys in math.

C.Math is a subject difficult to every one of us.

D.Women are born with insufficient math abilities.

2.What can we learn from the study conducted by Cantlon?

A.Boys process math skills more quickly than girls.

B.Boys and girls have similar brain in math abilities.

C.Boys and girls have similar interest in math.

D.Adults have better brain than children in math.

3.What will Cantlon most likely agree with?

A.Parents should lengthen the time spent with girls.

B.Society is causing a greater gender difference in math abilities.

C.Culture plays a leading role in children’s brain development.

D.We should cultivate boys’ and girls’ math abilities equally.

4.How will Cantlon further her research?

A.By using a wider range of math skills.

B.By involving a broader scope of subjects.

C.By increasing the complexity of math tasks.

D.By following the children until their adulthood.

It is with mixed emotions that I went to the young criminal center every few months to give vaccinations (接种疫苗). On the one hand, I feel lucky to be able to provide a service that may have a positive health effect on the residents. But, on the other hand, I feel a sense of sadness and disappointment as I see the prisoners being escorted (押送) by guards to the nursing unit.

My last visit was very memorable. For some reason, there was a lightness in the air. More than ever before, I felt a lightness as I spoke with each person. We shared stories and smiles and fears. Even the toughest prisoners seemed to be surrounded by light. As a mother, I saw them as not only youth, being punished for crimes, but also as children who have the potential to change for the better. Most of them wanted to talk longer! They were reaching out to us! It felt right.

There was one more prisoner. He was limited to a different unit in a lonely cell. We were asked if we were okay going down there. We said that we were. Two guards escorted us down and when we entered the area, instant tears welled up in my eyes. The area was sad. These guards didn’t smile. We entered the cell and had to make do with what was there.

We were done but I didn’t want to leave. I gave the 17 year old a gentle touch and smile as I explained what to do regarding the side effects. At first, there was no response, so I just looked down at his bare feet and then to my supplies. I thought that I had better pack up. Suddenly, he looked up at me and smiled before he said “Thanks” and then he gave me a thumbs-up. I smiled back and said, “You’re welcome. Take care of yourself.”

It was wonderful to receive a kind response from someone who was in such a harsh place. As we walked back to the main entrance, we didn’t speak. Where there can be a smile, there is hope. Sometimes smiles can be very powerful.

Birth order plays a vital role in deciding the characteristics of a child. And when it comes to the middle child, it certainly plays a huge role. The middle children go through some things only they can understand. 1.

Mostly, middle children have to share a room. 2. They need to share a room with an elder one because they're too young to sleep alone. And just when they think they'll finally have a room of their own, a voice is heard saying, “Dear, please share the room with your younger one, as he's too small to sleep alone.”

Middle children tend to share clothes with their siblings (兄弟姐妹). Their cupboard is full of handmedowns from their older sibling, and they need to wear his clothes. 3. They can always show off their elder sibling's clothes and things at school. Also, they get to pass their own clothes to their younger sibling.

4. They're liked by both, because they can relate well to both generations. On one hand they can recall how much fun it was watching Garfield and Friends, and on the other hand they can talk about the latest video game released in the market.

Siblings' talking is one interesting thing about a middle child. They are not as boring as they appear.5. Also, thanks to the divided attention at home, middle children are independent and need not rely on anyone.

A.Instead, they are very artistic and creative.

B.But this comes with its own advantage too.

C.Here are some things a middle child can relate to.

D.They rarely enjoy the experience of having their own room.

E.And the dream of having their own room is completely destroyed.

F.They're the problem solvers between their older and younger siblings.

G.As a middle kid, they are the bridge between their younger and older siblings.

A new phone app uses shaking from smartphones to warn people about earthquakes. The new app is called MyShake, which is the work of four researchers at the University of California. Berkeley.

Smartphones are equipped with accelerometers(加速器). MyShake uses phone accelerometers to measure seismic (地震的) activity. It has been programmed to know the difference between normal activity and earthquake movement. The software developers say their app is right 93 percent of the time. A smartphone sends seismic information to the app developers. If the developers receive several warnings from one area, it recognizes that an earthquake may be taking place or will take place soon. Using information sent from the app, the network then judges the location and strength of the quake in real time. MyShake can record 5.0 earthquake at distances of 10 kilometers or less.

MyShake uses very little power, according to its developers. Only when seismic activity is sensed by the app does it become active and sends data to the network. The app works best when your phone is resting on a flat surface, like a table.

The developers hope that MyShake can add to information collected by the U.S Geological Survey. That U.S agency has created the Earthquake Early Warning System, also known as the EEW. The EEW has used sensors for measuring quakes in many areas. In places where no such equipment exists, MyShake may be the only method of early quake detection (发现). The app also shows ways to stay safer during an earthquake. The developers say it will become more effective as more people use it.

The developers say they hope to add a feature that will warn people about possible tsunami after an earthquake.

1.The new app

A.is a kind of accelerometer.

B.feels earthquakes through smartphones.

C.is developed by the U.S Geological Survey.

D.predicts possible tsunami after an earthquake.

2.What is the second paragraph mainly talking about?

B.What seismic activity is.

C.Why MyShake is developed.

D.When accelerometers record earthquake.

3.We can infer that MyShake

A.docs not work when the spartphone is in the pocket

B.sleeps while there is no shaking of the earth’s surface.

C.guides people how to survive when many people use it at the same time.

D.recognizes an earthquake when it receive the information from other sensors.

4.The new app developers hope to

A.use the information by the U.S Geological Survey to better MyShake.

B.unite the U.S Geological Survey to combine the EEW and MyShake.

Traveling by subway can sometimes be quite an adventure, especially during rush hour. There are the times when you have to avoid cups of coffee that could spill () on you. The smells of some passengers’ food are very strong, too. According to the Beijing subway passenger regulations, which went into effect on May 15th, passengers except babies and the sick are no longer allowed to eat or drink on the subway. Violators (违反者) who do not stop after being asked to will be asked to get off. The violation will also be recorded in the violators’ credit record.

Some support the rule. The reason is that the smell of food and drink can annoy other passengers. “The smell of food fills the carriage, causing people discomfort, especially in the hot summer, Besides, eating on the subway produces rubbish. And on subway trains, people often spill their drinks,” said Zheng Yiou, 17, a student from Hefei.

However, others question this rule. “Some citizens live so far from their work places that they have limited time to have breakfast before they go to work. Eating while they travel saves them time and decreases the chance that they will be late for work,” He Songlin, a 17-year-old student from Chengdu said, “And some people, like those with low- blood sugar levels, get sick if they can’t eat when they must.”

Other Chinese cities like Nanjing and Chengdu have similar regulations. Some foreign cities also ban eating and drinking on the subway. For example, eating and drinking have long been banned on the subway in Washington DC. Singapore fines people who eat or drink on the subway up to 500 Singapore dollars, which is RMB 2,417 yuan.

Chen Yanyan, a professor from Beijing University of Technology, believed we should consider the need of some people to eat or drink on the subway. “Commuters (上班族) and travelers are sometimes too busy to eat. Maybe we could learn from Tokyo, where there are many subway stations equipped with services, allowing passengers to eat and drink,” she said.

1.In which city was subway passenger regulations carried out on May 15th?

A.Chengdu. B.Nanjing.

C.Washington DC. D.Beijing.

2.What’s the punishment for the passengers who break the rules in Singapore?

A.Eating on the subway. B.Drinking on the subway.

C.Being fined up to 2417 yuan. D.Being asked to get off the train.

3.What is Chen Yanyan’s attitude to eating or drinking on the subway?

A.Worried. B.Sympathetic.

C.Doubtful. D.Uninterested

4.What would be the best title for the text?

A.Food and Drink Banned on Subway.

B.The Adventure of Subway Traveling

C.Ways to Eat and Drink on Subway.

D.The Services on Subway Stations

Robert Jarvik, born on May 11, 1946 in Michigan and raised in Stamford, is a medical scientist and researcher, who played an important role in the invention of the artificial heart. He was interested in medicine from a young age. He watched his father perform operations and gained a patent (专利权) for a machine applied in the medical operation before he graduated from high school.

Jarvik attended Syracuse University and considered a career in art. When his father developed heart disease suddenly, he decided then to work on a medical career. He applied to medical schools, but was not admitted to any schools in the US. Before long, he was admitted to the medical school in Italy and stayed there for two years. He returned to get a degree in medicine from New York University in 1971.

After working for a period of time, Jarvik got a job in the organ transplant (器官移植) program at the University of Utah in 1972. He worked with the director of the program, Willem Kolff, who invented the kidney dialysis (肾透析) machine.

By the time Jarvik came to the University of Utah, the organ program had already developed the primary artificial heart. He improved it by creating a diaphragm (横膈膜), which solved many issues with the heart. Eventually, he created the first artificial heart in 1981, the Jarvik-7, to be placed in a human patient, which was considered one of the most important inventions in human history.

Barney Clark, a retired dentist suffering from serious heart disease, received the Jarvik-7 transplant on December 2, 1982. He lived for 112 days after the operation, but the transplant was considered a success. Though receiving criticism for the risk referred to transplant an artificial heart, the Jarvik-7 still became very important for patients who were waiting for a heart. In 1987, Jarvik moved to New York City and formed Jarvik Research Inc. He began developing a new heart — the Jarvik 2000. This smaller machine fits inside a patient’s heart rather than replacing the entire organ.

A study of art history might be a good way to learn more about a culture than is possible to learn in general classes. Most typical history courses concentrate on politics, economics, and wars. But art history focuses on much more than this because art reflects not only the political values of a people, but also religious beliefs, emotions, and psychology. In addition, information about the daily activities of our ancestors ― or of people very different from our own ― can be provided by art. In short, art expresses the essential qualities of a time and a place, and a study of it clearly offers us a deeper understanding than what can be found in most history books.

In history books, objective information about the political life of a country is presented: that is, facts about politics are given, but opinions are not expressed. Art, on the other hand, is subjective: it reflects emotions and opinions. The great Spanish painter Franciso Goya was perhaps the first truly political artist. In his well-known painting The Third of May, 1808, he criticized the Spanish government for its misuse of power over people. Over a hundred years later, symbolic images were used in Pablo Picasso’s Guernica to express the horror of war. Meanwhile, on another continent, the powerful paintings of Diego Rivera, Jose Clements Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros ― as well as the works of Alfredo Ramos Martinez ― showed these Mexican artists’ deep anger and sadness about social problems.

In the same way, art can reflect a culture’s religious beliefs. Four hundreds of years in Europe, religious art was almost the only type of art that existed. Churches and other religious buildings were filled with paintings that depicted people and stories from the Bible. Although most people couldn’t read, they could still understand biblical stories in the pictures on church walls. By contrast, one of the main characteristics of art in the Middle East was (and still is) its absence of human and animal images. This reflects the Islamic(伊斯兰教的)belief that statues are unholy(不神圣的;亵渎的).

1.Which of the following sentences is WRONG according to the passage?

A.Art history concentrates on religious beliefs, emotions and psychology only.

B.Art can provide information about the everyday activities of ancient people.

C.Information and facts about politics are given objectively in history.

D.Franciso Goya was perhaps the first truly political artist.

2.History books are objective because _____.

A.personal and emotional opinions are expressed through it

B.it will make the viewers angry and sad about history

C.it can help us understand historical facts better

D.opinions about facts are not expressed

3.The two pictures The Third of May, 1808 and Guernica mentioned in paragraph 2 show that _____.

A.art is subjective

B.artists are very similar even over a hundred years

C.art can reflect political life of a country

D.history books present objective information

4.In paragraph 2, the underlined “another continent” refers to _____.

A.Europe B.America

C.Mexico D.Middle East

5.The passage is mainly discussing _____.

A.the difference between general history and art history

B.the development of art history

C.the influence of artists on art history

D.what we can learn from art

6.It may be concluded from this passage that _____.

A.Islamic artists focus on creating architectural decorations with pictures of flowers or geometric (几何) forms
