Apologizing the Right Way to a Friend

Why are apologies so difficult? Saying you are sorry can be one of the most difficult things you do. But we all make mistakes, so you'll probably have an occasion when you need to apologize.

Perhaps you had a big blow up and realized later you reacted poorly. 1.Whatever the reason, apologizing can help you both heal and move on from the situation.

2.First, you acknowledge that you did something wrong. With an apology, you take responsibility for your actions, which allows your friend to forgive you. Second, an apology gives you sincerity as a friend. 3., but that doesn’t mean you still shouldn’t apologize.

Now, what are elements of a proper apology? 4. ,depending on what the offense was, where it was done, and who you are apologizing to.  In general, a good apology should include the following: a request for their attention, an acknowledgment of what happened, sincerity in admitting you did something wrong and the words. "I'm sorry" or “I apologize."

Here are things never to say when apologizing. Note that the art of apologizing involves taking responsibility. Never apologize as a way to “shut someone up” when they are saying you hurt their feelings and you don’t think you did. 5.,you should talk things through with your friend until you see why they are hurt or how you came across. You'll really need to self-reflect so you can see things from your friend’s point of view.

A. When you make your apology in person

B. If you really believe you did nothing wrong

C. Apologies benefit friendships in a variety of ways

D. The way you apologize is going to be slightly different

E. Or maybe you just didn’t show support when you needed to

F. Apologizing the right way, however, may take a little practice

G. Sometimes our pals forgive us easily for the minor things we do wrong

While many countries love their tea, UK citizens are particularly proud of being “tea people”. The average UK citizen consumes nearly 2 kilograms of tea each year.

Tea only made its way to England in large quantities in the first years of the 17th century. Tea from China and a few other Asian countries was being sold more widely in England at that time. Then tea was getting more and more popular among different social classes.

There are many varieties of tea. Black tea mixtures are still the most common type drunk in the UK. Black tea is dark in colour, because the leaves have been allowed to oxidize (氧化) before drying. This is why we usually serve it with milk, although it is not uncommon to drink it black or with lemon. You may still find tea made with loose tea leaves, served up in a pot, and poured into the best china cups with saucers (茶托) for visitors.

Tea is still a large part of daily life in the UK today, but it seems to be on the decrease. The amount of tea sold in the UK fell by more than 10% in the five years leading up to 2002, and has been dropping ever since. Tea sales fell by 6% in 2014 alone, and most restaurants report selling more than twice as many cups of coffee as they do tea. More than 1 billion was spent on coffee in high street stores in 2013, more than twice what was spent on tea bags.

Still, what goes around comes around; it’s sure to become fashionable again.

1.Which of the following is true according to the first three paragraphs?

A.Tea made its way to England in the early years of the 16th century.

D.UK citizens take pride in being “tea people”.

2.What can we infer from the fourth paragraph?

A.Tea sales fell by 6% in 2014 alone.

B.Since 2002, the sales of tea has been on the decrease.

C.In 2013, the money spent on tea was 3 billion.

D.Most restaurant like selling tea than coffee.

3.What does the underlined sentence mean in the last paragraph?

A.It can never succeed again B.The tea can become popular again.

C.Coffee is more popular than tea D.The tea is becoming less popular.

4.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A.To introduce tea in the UK. B.To show the author’s preference for tea.

C.To introduce the functions of tea. D.To compare tea in China and UK.

I moved to the United States as a teenager. The adjustment to a new place was difficult. But there was major stress in my life at that time: I was the only member of my family who spoke English, meaning I had to step up when we dealt with a shop assistant, a waiter and so on. However, there was another universal language I loved to learn as a child: art.

Although I connected myself with drawing and painting while in school, I mostly dismissed art as a path to a career. Since my dad always said "Think about the future", I did not think he would support the study of art once I went to college. But, to my surprise, it was my parents who suggested just that and urged me to apply to technical and liberal arts schools.

I was admitted into industrial design. It's basically to design products and services. I could be doing something more technical or something more related to problem-solving. It was no easy task to do the course including metalworking, woodworking and model making. In one class I just drew cubes for an entire month, which led me to a question"Wow! Do I really want to do this? "But I finally survived the course.

Now I am a design strategist for Marshall Moya Design, a famous architecture and interior design company. I have experience in exhibit design, product design and website design, apart from which I enjoy developing public art in my free time.

Throughout my careerI've picked up different things along the way. The best way to learn in my opinion is through working, therefore, get as many projects as you can. Industrial design kind of makes you an all-round person.

All of a sudden, the normal flow of pedestrian traffic backed up as people tried to avoid a large object on the sidewalk. To my astonishment, the object turned out to be a human being, a man lying unconscious against a building. 2. Certainly no one made eye contact. Then the drunken man began to murmur senselessly. My father warned me not to go near, saying "You never know how he’ll react."

3. I had spent the previous 12 months traveling in poor Asian cities, but even by those standards this was a scene of misery. In addition to being desperately poor, the locals had to live in the extremely hot climate, ridiculously huge crowds and a fairly strong wind blowing dust everywhere. Suddenly a man carrying a huge bag of peanuts called out in pain and fell to the ground. 4. A half dozen sellers ran from their stands to help, leaving unattended what might have been the totality of their possessions. One put a blanket under the man's head; another opened his shirt; a third questioned him carefully about the pain; a fourth fetched water; a fifth kept onlookers from crowding around too closely; a sixth ran for help.5.  The performance could have passed for a final exam at a paramedic (护理人员)school.

Royal Dutch Shell is launching a $ 300 million and forestry program, at a time when an increasing number of oil companies are putting money in carbon offset (碳补偿)plans to meet climate goals. The company will spend the money over the next three years on projects to store carbon, including large forests in the Netherlands and Spain, and will start offering motorists the option of purchasing carbon offsets when they buy petrol at the pump.

The executives of the company explained that these carbon offset projects were a new business opportunity for Shell, as well as a way to meet its climate targets. “We believe that over time we will be building a business, because these carbon credits will become more valuable as carbon becomes more limited," they said. Shell recently decided to cut its net carbon footprint (碳排放)by 2-3 percent in five years, which includes emissions (排放)from the products it sells. The company plans to produce carbon credits from the forestry projects, then sell these credits on to customers buying its oil and gas products, or apply the credits to its own operations to lower its carbon footprint.

Plants absorb carbon dioxide as they grow and restoring forests and other natural areas is considered one of the simplest ways to store carbon. However, the voluntary market for carbon credits based on forestry projects has its critics, as projects in developing countries can be hard to monitor. Shell's move has also been criticized by some environmentalists. They worried that there was a risk of " greenwash when companies invested in forestry projects. "There is an entire debate about whether forestry projects truly reduce emissions or not," they said, pointing out that planting in one area could cause deforestation (滥伐森林)to another.

Shell said it would rely on the third party to ensure its forest program to meet the Voluntary Carbon Standard and strict biodiversity requirements. Mark Lewis, head of climate change investment research at BNP Paribas, said, " Planting trees to offset emissions, as far as it goes, is a step in the right direction."

1.What is popular among oil companies these days?

A.Studying climate changes.

B.Launching forestry programs.

C.Working out carbon offset plans.

D.Attracting motorists to buy their petrol.

2.How will Shell Company make profits from its carbon offset projects?

A.By quitting the emissions of its products.

B.By reducing its carbon footprint by a quarter.

C.By limiting the oil used by its own operations.

D.By putting carbon credits it produces on the market.

3.What concerns some environmentalists about forestry project?

A.The projects can't really stop carbon emissions.

B.The projects are hard to monitor in poor countries.

C.The projects may lead to deforestation in other forests.

D.The projects haven't met strict biodiversity requirements.

4.What does the underlined word "greenwash" in paragraph 3 mean?

A.Discount. B.Cheat.

C.Decline. D.Change.

Yellow is usually the color of happy, joyful emotions (情感).But according to a new study, not all people associate the sunshiny shade with good feelings.

To find out what factors might play a role, researchers tested a new hypothesis (假设): What if people's physical surroundings affect their feelings about certain colors? For example, if someone lived in cold and rainy Finland, would they feel differently about the color yellow from someone who lived near the Sahara Desert?

The researchers looked at color-emotion data from an ongoing international survey (调查) of 6,625 people in 55 countries. The survey asked participants to rate 12 colors on how closely they were associated with feelings including joy, pride, fear, and shame.

The researchers paid particular attention to the data for yellow, and analyzed how different factors — including hours of sunshine, hours of daylight, and the amount of rainfall -lined up with the emotions people reported for the color. The two best predictors of how people felt about yellow were the annual amount of rainfall, and how far they lived from the equator (赤道).

Overall, people were more likely to associate yellow with joy when they lived in rainier countries that lay farther from the equator, researchers reported in the Journal of Environmental

Psychology. In Egypt, the likelihood of yellow being associated with joy was just 5.7% ,whereas in chilly Finland it was 87.7%. In the United States, with its mild climate and amber waves of grain, peopled yellow-joy association levels were between 60% and 70% .

The researchers also checked whether associations changed with the season — whether, for example, people in a certain country liked yellow more in the winter than they did in the summer. They found that opinions about color remained fairly constant year-round -even when the weather changed, the data on yellow-joy associations were as good as gold.

1.What did the researchers do before the survey?

A.They went to Finland. B.They made an assumption.

C.They studied certain colors. D.They analyzed some data.

2.Which of the following affects people's feelings about yellow?

A.The changeable seasons. B.The length of daytime.

C.The geographic position. D.The amount of snowfall.

3.How did the researchers carry out the survey?

A.By interviewing participants.

B.By studying the data collected.

C.By travelling around the world.

D.By looking at color combinations.

4.What can be the best title of the text?

A.Finland : A Country Admiring Yellow.

B.Yellow: Associated with Joy Conditionally.

C.Color: An Important Role in Good Feelings.

D.Color-emotion Data: Collected Internationally.

Teenage life is quite dramatic but that doesn't mean you cannot enjoy your life in these years. Even with your daily troubles, your life is not very hard if you know how to deal with them.

I know exactly how you feel. Life as a teenager can be hard. You are not a kid anymore, because you are smart enough to observe and analyze your surroundings. However, you are still not an adult because there are still lots of experiences that you need to have and lessons that you need to learn from these experiences. To top it all, the hormonal (荷尔蒙的)imbalance in you body can really mess you up emotionally. I have been there. I was in it for 6 years exploring what life is about.

As a teenager, I had a major problem completing my chores on time. And at that time, all that I needed to do was to finish my assignments, study for the upcoming test and clean my room. Now, I have much more things to do: cooking, cleaning and working while striking a balance between all my relationships related to work, family and friends. That really is a lot of work. So, I will just give you one golden tip, quoting from Benjamin Franklin," Never leave that till tomorrow which you can do today."

Life becomes much easier now because I finish all my work on time and I have enough time to let my hair down. Half the problems as a teenager are because we hate doing things. We'd rather go and have fun than sit down and take care of our duties and responsibilities. That is why you have so much trouble in your life; your parents won't let you go out with friends because you haven't cleaned your room or your teacher is always criticizing you because you haven't finished your assignments.

A.I then witnessed an astonishing scene.

B.Not one of the passers-by seemed to notice that it was a man.

C.This was totally different from the bitter experience I had in New York.

D.Within minutes, a doctor arrived, and two other locals joined in to assist.

E.I soon came to see that day's lesson as basic knowledge for a New Yorker.

F.I'll always remember a lesson that I learned as a boy growing up in New York City.

G.Yet many years later I had a very different experience while visiting a market in Rangoon.

Heads up! Across the country, sports injuries are a safety concern for young athletes. Now, the American Medical Association (AMA) has a new set of guidelines aimed at protecting players from the danger of concussions- serious injuries caused by a blow to the head.

“By raising awareness of the serious risks associated with concussions and ensuring that the appropriate guidelines are in place, we can reduce the number of young athletes who may return to the game too soon, which can put their health at further risk,” said AMA Board Member Jack Resneck Jr, MD, in a statement.

The policy recommends that young athletes who may have a concussion be taken off the field as soon as possible. Then, they are only to return to their sport with a doctor 's written approval. The policy also sets age-specific rules for health care professionals and athletic organizations in evaluating and caring for concussions.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury (外伤性脑损伤) caused by a bump, or jolt to the head or hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This type of movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist inside the skull (颅骨). It can damage brain cells and create chemical changes in the brain.

The CDC says that between 1.6 million and 3.8 million traumatic brain injuries caused by sports and recreation-related activities occur in the U.S. every year. A study from the Center for Injury Research and Policy showed that as many as 40% of high school athletes return to playing before they should. The AMA' S new guidelines should help to bring those numbers down.

1.What should young athletes who may have a concussion do?

A.Avoid using the head. B.Leave the field forever.

C.Get treatment in time. D.Switch to another sport.

2.What does the underlined word “jolt” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

A.A sudden impact. B.A strict limit.

C.A concrete barrier. D.A permanent damage.

3.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.How the EDC works. B.What causes damage to brain cells.

C.What a concussion is. D.How a concussion can be prevented.

4.Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.Sports Injuries in the US B.Rules for Safer Play

C.Advice to Athletes D.New Policies for Doctors

The kakapo, a bird that lives in New Zealand, is not designed for survival. Weighing up to 4 kilograms, it is the world's fattest parrot. It mates (交配)only when the rimu tree is in fruit, which happens every few years. It developed gradually in the absence of land-based natural enemies, so instead of flying above the trees it walks like a duck across the dry forest floor. When it moves unsteadily across something that might kill it, it will stand still.

Such unusual characteristics turned it into fast food for human settlers, and for the cats and rats they brought with them. It seemed to have disappeared by the 1970s, until scientists came across two undiscovered populations in the country s south. These survivors were eventually moved to small enemy -free islands, where researchers have spent decades trying to get them to breed (繁殖).

The scientists' patience is finally rewarded. The rimu was in fruit this year, and more than 80 chicks hatched, making this the best breeding season, on record. Many have. survived into adolescence, increasing the number of adult kakapos by a third, to 200 birds.

Another danger to the kakapo is a lack of genetic diversity. This is one reason why fewer than half of kakapo eggs hatch. By arranging the genome (基因组) of every living bird, scientists can identify closely-related individuals and put them on different islands. Every bird is fitted with something to track its slightest movement. If a female mates with an “unsuitable” male, the process can be stopped.

All these efforts cost almost New Zealand $1 .3 million this breeding season. Yet the kakapo's future still looks unsafe. Earlier this year a severe disease tore through the population. And tiny as the number of kakapos is, space is running out on the two islands where most of them live. New enemy-free settlements must soon be found.

1.Which of the following is a danger for the survival of the kakapo?

A.It is the smallest bird in the world.

B.It lacks exercise and usually stands still.

C.It adapts slowly, in genetic development.

D.It can't respond actively when facing danger.

2.In what way was the scientists' patience rewarded?

A.Adequate food supply for kakapos was guaranteed.

B.New settlements for kakapos were eventually found.

C.Kakapos were becoming increasingly aggressive.

D.Kakapos' birth rate reached the highest level.

3.Why did the scientists put kakapos in different islands?

A.To stop closely-related kakapos mating.

B.To help kakapo families live together.

C.To maintain the production of rimu fruit.

D.To protect kakapos from natural enemies.

4.What does the author think of the efforts to protect the kakapo in New Zealand?

A.They are successful. B.They are inadequate.

C.They are doubtful. D.They are unsafe.

My school appeared on the news last week because we had made an important change in our local area. Our class had planted a large garden in what was once only a vacant lot. It was a lot of work but it was all worth it. I got blisters(水泡) from digging, and we all got insect bites, too.

I learned a lot about gardening and collaboration(合作), and then I learned about the media. Our teacher telephoned the TV station and informed them of what we had accomplished. She spoke with the producer. The producer checked with the directors, but they said there were plenty of stories similar to ours. They wanted to know what was special about our particular garden, since many schools plant them.

The teacher explained that, after going on the Internet to learn about the prairie(大草原), we had made a prairie garden. We had gone to a prairie and gotten seeds from the plants, and then we planted them. We did not water the garden, but we did weed it. We decided to let nature water it with rain, since that was how prairies grew in the past. We sent a picture of the garden to the news station. In the picture, the grass was so high that it stood taller than the fourth grade students.

As a result, the producer sent a reporter to our school. He interviewed the headmaster and asked him many questions about the garden. After that, they interviewed us, and we explained to them what we had learned through this project.

That night, we watched the news, and there we were. The news reporter told our story. It was only two minutes long, but it was us. We were famous. All that work, all those blisters, it was worth it. We knew that when we saw the garden every day, but now we knew that the whole city thought so, too.

1.What seemed to be the TV directors’ initial reaction to the garden?

A.They were excited. B.They were surprised.

C.They were worried. D.They were uninterested.

2.What is special about the garden?

A.Weeds were allowed to spread naturally.

B.The grass grew faster than common grass.

C.The seeds came from the plants of a prairie.

D.Underground water was used for the plants.

3.What does the underlined word “that” refer to in the last paragraph?

A.We got blisters on our hands. B.Our hard work was worthwhile.

C.The garden would be famous. D.The project would be finished.

4.How did the author feel about the project?

A.Annoyed. B.Curious. C.Proud. D.Regretful.

Learning English used to be about developing four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. After all, that’s 1. the exams are designed — with four skills 2.(test) separately. But over the years, educators 3.(come) to realize that these four skills should never have been separated, but practiced all at once. And the best way to do that is, perhaps, 4. public speaking.

According to Mei Deming, 5.professor of English at Shanghai International Studies University, giving a speech in an international language requires a speaker to integrate (融合) knowledge and content 6.(mental) and express the result systematically. This is why the annual China Daily “21st Century Cup” National English Speaking Competition has been gaining in 7. (popular) since it began in 1996, 8.has worked as a model for developing students’ public-speaking skills in English and provided ideas for English teaching in schools.

9.China continues to play an important role in global conversations, there will be more chances for young Chinese people to present China and tell attracting stories. And in order to tell Chinese stories 10.(well), we first need to develop a more overall English skill. Working on public speaking is, perhaps, the place to start.

Miss Avery, my fifth-grade teacher, was a farm girl who was _______ to work hard and make something of herself She let us know she wanted to teach us the values her parents had given hen She _______ we learn the meaning of "kindheartedness". And all year, Miss Avery kept on the blackboard this sentence: “Have an _______ that never hardens, a temper that never tries, a touch that never hurts.”

Never? I was _______ if I could meet such standards. Miss Avery reminded us that we all _______, but that direction matters: a goal to pursue and values to have and to uphold — in her phrase, “a larger vision.”

Those three words were transformed by her to something _______ that stood before us every day: the flag of America. She was _______ telling each of us, “This is your country.” She took pains to explain what our Founding Fathers had in mind when they fought for independence.

It wasn’t that she wanted us to _______ taking an honest look at America’s past and present life. On the contrary, we spent a lot of time learning about the mistakes and _______ committed over the generations. We learned about slavery and the long struggle of the black for their rights.

Every day, we sang our national anthem and proudly ________ our nation’s flag. Every day, too, we had a history lesson right after that ________ of loyalty. Miss Avery asked that we put ourselves in the shoes of the presidents and other leaders whose achievements and misdeeds we were ________. We were asked to take ________ and argue a point of view before our classmates — with respect, say, to the Revolutionary War or the Civil War.

These days, I notice classrooms without the flag. Many teachers tell me that the salute (敬礼) to the flag never ________ in their school. Some of them say they hate extreme patriotism (爱国主义) — ________ loyalty to a nation. I respect a spirit of skepticism, but children also need ________ — something and someone to trust, to hold up as worthy of admiration.

It is important that our children keep in mind not only the errors made in our nation’s past but also the social, ________ , and racial struggles carried on with ________ that have led to a decent life for millions of us. We have good reason to want our children to appreciate this country and to ________ the flag as its symbol, even as we expect them to become citizens unafraid to look at what still needs to be done if a nation’s ideals are to become its everyday ________ .

Travel is one of the activities people carry out most often during their spare time. Although travel may cost a lot of money, most people like to travel. Maybe, for them, to broaden their horizons and to be happy and healthy, are more important than money. 1.The following tips on travel may help you if you plan to travel later on.2. If you want to enjoy a wonderful trip, you should think carefully about where to go. After making a decision, you should seek others' advice and try to know more about the place that you are going to, including how to get there, the cost, the sights you plan to visit, and so on.

Consider travel insurance. 3. Once such injury or accident happens to you, you may not have to suffer both physically and financially as long as you have travel insurance.

Do not forget medicines. Always remember to carry your first aid box and necessary medicines for a cold, infection, stomach upset, injuries, etc. Since you are travelling away from home, you may not have family members to care for you when you fall ill. 4.

Mind your basic safety. It's easy to let your guard down when you travel. After all, you're more relaxed and there are so many new sights to focus on. 5. So, watch out for your personal safety at all times.

A. Being a money-saving traveller has never been easy.

B. Know more about the place you plan to visit.

C. However, nothing is more important than your life.

D. Ask your friends for opinions about where to go.

E. Travel can be a wonderful experience and a sweet memory.

F. So, take extra care of yourself and be ready for everything.

G. Especially if you plan to take part in adventure activities, you may get injured.

You know you have to read "between the lines" to get the most out of anything. I want to persuade you to do something equally important in the course of your reading. I want to persuade you to “write between the lines." Unless you do, you are not likely to do the most efficient kind of reading.

I insist, quite bluntly, that marking up a book is not an act of damage but of love.

There are two ways in which one can own a book. The first is the property right you establish by paying for it, just as you pay for clothes and furniture. But this act of purchase is only the first step to possession. Full ownership comes only when you have made it a part of yourself and the best way to make yourself a part of it is by writing in it. I am arguing that books must be absorbed in your bloodstream to do you any good.

Why is marking up a book necessary to reading? First, it keeps you awake. (And I don't mean only conscious; I mean wide awake.) In the second place, reading, if it is active, is thinking and thinking tends to express itself in words, spoken or written. The marked book is usually the thought-through book. Finally, writing helps you remember the thoughts you had, or the thoughts the author expressed.

But, you may ask, why is writing necessary? Well, the physical act of writing, with your own hand, brings words and sentences more sharply before your mind and preserves them better in your memory. To set down your reaction to important words and sentences you have read, and the questions they have raised in your mind, is to preserve those reactions and sharpen those questions.

If reading is to accomplish anything more than passing time, it must be active. You can't let your eyes glide across the lines in a book and come up with an understanding of what you have read. The books you read for pleasure can be read in a state of relaxation, and nothing is lost. An ordinary piece of light fiction, like "Gone with the Wind," doesn't require the most active kind of reading, and you don't absorb the ideas of John Dewey the way you absorb the story of David Copperfield.

You may also say that this business of marking books is going to slow up your reading. It probably will. That's one of the reasons for doing it. Most of us have been taken in by the notion that speed of reading is a measure of our intelligence. There is no such things as the right speed for intelligent reading. Some things should be read quickly and effortlessly, and some should be read slowly and even laboriously. The sign of intelligence in reading is the ability to read different things differently according to their worth. In the case of good books, the point is not to see how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through you — how many you can make your own. A few friends are better than a thousand acquaintances. If this be your aim, as it should be, you will not be impatient if it takes more time and effort to read a great book than it does a newspaper.

1.Full ownership of a book does not occur until ________.

A.it is purchased B.it is read between the lines

C.it is written between the lines D.it is worn, shaken and loosened

2.The main advantage of marking up a book is ________.

A.to keep you from feeling sleepy

B.to show that you are absorbed in reading

C.to make yourself conscious that you are reading actively

D.to make yourself a part of it, making further understanding possible

3.The author most probably agrees that ________.

A.Gone with the Wind and David Copperfield are not thought-through books

B.Marking a book can help preserve your questions about what is read

C.Reading will benefit us more if it is done actively

D.Intelligent people usually read quickly and differently

4.The purpose of this passage is ________.

A.to tell the readers how to read different books

B.to encourage the readers to read slowly but actively

C.to argue that the readers should read between lines

D.to introduce ways to mark up a book while reading

In general, the ancient Romans were a practical people. They cared less about philosophy and pure mathematics than did the Greeks. The Romans were the best of the ancient engineers and architects. They were brilliant students of Greek geometry and trigonometry, and they applied their knowledge to the construction of fine bridges, roads, and public buildings.

They knew about the smelting of iron ore, but they used the iron they produced mainly for spears, swords, and shields, rather than for building construction.

While the Romans accomplished practical wonders, they did very little theoretical scientific thinking. Because of their frequent wars, many of their inventions were no more than improvements in the design of Greek weapons with which they were familiar.

There are two reasons for the Roman neglect of philosophy and pure mathematics. First, they were apparently too busy conquering nearby nations and forming them into a rapidly growing empire to waste much time on abstract thinking. Secondly, they were handicapped by the rigidity of their numerical system. (Try to multiply XI by LVII or to divide CXLIII by IX; it simply cannot be done with pencil and paper.) The Romans did all of their arithmetic on an abacus, the ancient counterpart of the modem computing machine. Their number system discouraged the study of pure mathematics.

1.The author calls the Romans “practical" because they________.

A.they didn't care about philosophy

B.they just learned from Greek geometry

C.they applied what they learned to construction

D.they thought little of theoretical scientific thinking

2.According to the passage, the Romans excelled in________.

A.smelting iron ore B.engineering and architecture

C.improving Greek weapons D.producing spears, swords, and shields

3.The underlined word “counterpart" in the last paragraph means ________.

A.equivalent B.calculator

C.appearance D.partner

4.The passage mainly talks about ________.

A.why Romans ignored mathematics

B.Romans' discouraging number system

C.how Romans accomplished practical wonders

D.Romans who neglected theoretical thought

"How do you account for your remarkable accomplishment in Queen Victoria of the UK asked Helen Keller. "How do you explain the fact that even though you were both blind and deaf you were able to accomplish so much?"

Ms. Keller's answer is a tribute (致敬) to her dedicated teacher. "If it had not been for Anne Sullivan, the name of Helen Keller would have remained unknown.”

According to speaker Zig Ziglar, "Little Annie" Sullivan, as she was called when she was young, was no stranger to hardship. She was almost sightless herself and was, at one time, diagnosed as hopelessly "insane" by her caregivers. She was locked in the basement of a mental institution outside of Boston. On occasion, Little Annie would violently attack anyone who came near. Most of the time she generally ignored everyone in her presence.

An elderly nurse believed there was hope, however, and she made it her mission to show love to the child. Every day she visited Little Annie. For the most part, the child did not acknowledge the nursed presence, but she still continued to visit. The kind woman left cookies for her and spoke words of love and encouragement. She believed Little Annie could recover, if only she were shown love.

Eventually, doctors noticed the change in the girl. Where they once witnessed anger and hatred, they now noted a gentleness and love. They moved her upstairs where she continued to improve. Then the day finally came when this seemingly "hopeless'' child was released.

Anne Sullivan grew into a young woman with a desire to help others as she herself was helped by the kind nurse. It was she who saw the great potential in Helen Keller. She loved her, disciplined her, played with her, pushed her and worked with her until the flickering candle that was her life became a beacon of light to the world. Anne Sullivan worked wonders in Helen's life; but it was a loving nurse who first believed in Little Annie and lovingly transformed an uncommunicative child into a compassionate teacher.

“If it had not been for Anne Sullivan, the name of Helen Keller would have remained unknown." But if it had not been for a kind and dedicated nurse, the name of Anne Sullivan would have remained unknown.

1.The dialogue between Queen Victoria and Helen Keller is mentioned mainly to  .

A.show a deep admiration for Helen Keller

B.prove that Helen Keller made a great contribution

C.begin telling the story of Helen Keller teacher Anne Sullivan

D.get the reader interested in how Helen Keller achieved so much

2.What is the hardship mentioned in the third paragraph?

A.Sullivan had a strange disease.

B.Almost everyone ignored Sullivan.

C.Sullivan was kept away from her parents.

D.Sullivan was believed to have a mental problem.

3.What can we conclude from the article?

A.Sullivan liked the nurse from the very beginning.

B.Sullivan experienced firsthand how terrible the life of a deaf child was.

C.The elderly nurse had no doubt that Sullivan would be a great teacher.

D.Without the nurse, Sullivan couldn't have helped Helen Keller later.

4.Which of the following would be the best title for the article?

A.The Power of Love

B.Making a Difference

C.The Secret to Being a Good Teacher

D.Similarities Between Anne and Helen
