Even if you wake up every day with a perfect smile on your face, it can easily be ruined by the difficult people you meet at your workplace. You can’t avoid them because they are already part of your daily life. They make your day stressful which gives you a terrible feeling to leave the work immediately. 1. I will share a few effective strategies which will help  you to deal with these difficult people.

Don’t take it personally.

Difficult people see others’ opinion as conflicting (冲突) to their belief. Their behaviour is already a habit to them so if you take it personally, they may even plan to make your life more terrible. Remember the problem is not only with you.2.

Listen to what they say.

Sometimes what difficult people want is someone’s attention and love. There are also difficult people who don’t even speak but will just throw you with sullen ( 愠怒的) looks to make you feel uneasy. 3.  The thought of you standing there and waiting for a response  will make them feel uncomfortable and they will just decide to speak up. If they do, listen carefully and analyze it.

Don’t get discouraged.

I have already told you that it would be really difficult for you to change their behaviour but never give up. It should be you affecting them and not them affecting you.4. They  would not interfere (干扰) with you again. If they realize that, you can already enjoy your stay in the office or in the school.

5.

Instead of dealing with their pessimistic attitude every day, try to look at what advantages these people have. That way, they will start to like and appreciate you. Also, they won’t give you cold stares any more.

A.See what’s good in these people.

B.Choose topics that you both like.

C.Difficult people are sometimes suffering from low self-esteem (自尊).

D.If this happens, ask them and wait for a minute until he or she speaks.

E.What’s worse is that they can even make your enjoyable day unhealthy.

F.There must be many people who feel annoyed with their unpleasant behaviour.

G.Once they feel that you are different and they can’t beat you, they’ll learn to become distant.

An abandoned car in Chicago worth about $600 has been issued more than $100, 000 in parking tickets (罚单) over the past three years. Now Jennifer Fitzgerald, 31, is stuck with the bill but says the 1999 Chevy Monte Carlo actually belongs to an ex-boyfriend who registered  (登记注册) the car in her name without informing her.

The Expired Meter ( 停车计时器) reports that from May 23, 2009 to April 30, 2012, the Chicago Department of Finance (DOF) issued 678 tickets against the car, totaling $105, 761.80. It set a Chicago record both for the total number and amount of parking fines issued. In fact, it blew past the previous record holder, which was $65,000 from about 400 tickets.

But Fitzgerald says she doesn’t owe the city a dime (10 分硬币) and has filed a lawsuit (诉讼 ) in Cook County Circuit Court against the city of Chicago, United Airlines and the ex-boyfriend. Fitzgerald has two main arguments in her case. First, she says her ex-boyfriend, Brandon Preveau, is the actual owner of the car, having bought it from her uncle for $600 in 2008. In fact, Brandon paid for the car’s title (所有权), registration and insurance, but it was registered in Fitzgerald’s name. “Brandon used his 2007 income tax refund ( 退 ) to pay Patrick $600 for the car,” reads Fitzgerald’s complaint. “For reasons not recalled by Patrick, however, Patrick signed the title to the car over to Fitzgerald.”

Second, Fitzgerald’s lawyer is arguing that the city should have simply towed (拖走) the car after 30 days from O’Hare Airport, where it was parked and where Brandon worked at the time. According to Fitzgerald’s complaint, on or before November 17, 2009, Brandon drove the car into the parking lot and never drove it out again. And as the Expired Meter reports, Chicago law does state exactly that an abandoned vehicle is to be towed 30 days after being illegally parked.

1.After the Chicago Department of Finance noticed the car, it _______.

A.wanted to break a record

B.tried its best to find its owner

C.kept issuing tickets against the car

D.decided to play a joke on its owner

2.From Paragraph 3, we know that Jennifer Fitzgerald _______.

A.sold the car to her ex-boyfriend long ago

B.received the car from her ex-boyfriend

C.didn’t know anything about the car

D.wasn’t the real owner of the car

3.Jennifer Fitzgerald filed a lawsuit against the city of Chicago because the city _______.

A.didn’t inform her as soon as it found the missing car

B.didn’t tow the vehicle after 30 days from O’Hare Airport

C.didn’t state exactly that an abandoned vehicle was to be towed

D.didn’t help her find the car when it was missing in the beginning

4.After reading the passage we learn that Jennifer Fitzgerald _______.

A.doesn’t want to pay any money

B.thinks Patrick should pay the fines

C.isn’t trying to find her ex-boyfriend

D.has never been to O’Hare Airport

Throughout Europe golf has been popular for many years. A recent report says that in Great Britain alone, 700 new golf courses (球场) will have to be built over the next ten years to satisfy people’s demand.

This is all good news for golf lovers, but it worries those who want to protect the environment. Their argument is that the new courses are disturbing the balance of nature. Woods, ponds and fields are being dug up to make way for the courses. The birds and animals that used to live there are being killed or forced to leave. The amount of water that a club uses to keep its course in good condition is reducing the amount of water available for industrial and other uses. The chemicals used to control insects are sinking into the underground water.

There may be some truth in this, but it is not the whole truth. The days are long past when building of any kind was allowed in beautiful places with no thought for the environment. Planning permission, nowadays, is as strict for golf courses as it is for any other type of development. Before any such project is given the go-ahead, many factors are studied. It is only when it is clear that no harm will be done to the area that the builders are allowed to move in.

A strong case can even be made that golf courses are actually good for the areas where they are built. Courses are built in areas which are not areas of natural beauty. The new courses often make the area livelier. To make holes more difficult, trees are planted and lakes are filled in around greens. Not surprisingly perhaps, it is not unusual to find that, within months of a course being completed, a whole variety of animals and birds have moved in.

Obviously, careful thought has to go into the design of the new courses. As few changes as possible should be made to the natural environment. The wild-life and woods should also  be protected. But this can be, and is being, done. There is no reason why golfers and nature cannot live peacefully together.

1.What is TRUE about building a new golf course nowadays?

A.It takes up too much land.

B.A lot of trees have to be cut down.

C.It is easy to get planning taken into consideration.

D.Many things will be taken into consideration.

2.What can we infer from Paragraph 4?

A.That a whole variety of animals and birds have moved in the courses is uncommon.

B.Only when it is clear that no harm will be done to the area, are the builders allowed to move in.

C.Golf courses could make local areas look beautiful.

D.Golf courses’ construction wastes too much water and money.

3.Which of the following shows the structure (结构) of the text? (P=paragraph)

C. D.

Do you know the following expressions?

Homeric laughter

The “Homer” in this expression is the Greek poet who wrote The Iliad and the Odyssey. People laugh differently. Some laugh silently, while others tend to laugh loudly. “Homeric laughter” refers to laughter of the latter (后者) kind. It is at times uncontrollable, and the entire body shakes during the process. This kind of laughter is called Homeric laughter because this is how the gods laughed in Homer’s classics.

Faustian bargain

According to most stories, Faust was a German scholar who was rather unhappy with his life. The devil( ), Mephistopheles, promises him that in return for his soul, he will give Faust unlimited power and knowledge. Faust agrees and experiences all kinds of pleasures, but, in the end, his soul is condemned to the hell (下地狱). A “Faustian bargain” therefore is a deal that finally results in one's ruin. It means a bargain made for temporary gain without taking future consequences into consideration.

A three-ring circus (马戏团)

When you refer to a situation as being a three-ring circus, you are saying that it is a situation of complete confusion. There are so many activities taking place all together that  they leave you confused or annoyed. The expression comes from the world of entertainment — the circus. The area where the artists perform their acts is called the “ring”. In the past, some of the circuses were so grand that they had three acts taking place simultaneously in three different “rings”. The audience had to decide which “ring” they wanted to focus on.

In the swim (of things)

When someone is in the swim of things, the individual is actively participating in the things happening around him, as in “I've been ill, but soon I'll be back in the swim of things.” In the world of fishing, fishermen use the word “swim” to refer to the section of the lake/river where fish can be found in plenty. So, if you are a fisherman and wish to catch a lot of fish, where would you be? You would be “in the swim”!

1.According to the text, Homeric laughter _______.

A.was the way Homeric laughed

B.means nervous, silent laughter

C.is a way to show disagreement

D.comes from a Greek poet’s works

2.If a person makes a Faustian bargain, _______.

A.he might come to a bad end

B.he would be considered clever

C.his life would become satisfying

D.he would gain power and knowledge

3.What does the underlined word “simultaneously” most probably mean?

A.All of a sudden. B.Little by little.

C.At the same time. D.One after another.

4.What do we learn about the expression “in the swim (of things)”?

A.It means having a lot of things to do

B.It has nothing to do with swimming

C.Originally it was used to refer to "going fishing"

D.Patients use it to express their desire for health.

I’ve loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the more wonderful thing in the world.

Years later, during her final illness, mother kept different things for my sister and brother. “But the desk,” she’d said again, “it’s for Elizabeth.”

I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.

They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional(易动感情的)”. But she lived “on the surface”.

As years passed I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive me.

I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came.

My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and, finally, peace— it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn’t be sure that the letter had even got to mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.

Now the present of her desk told, as she’d never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside —a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded and refolded many times.

Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose. Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.

1.The passage shows that ______.

A.mother was cold on the surface but kind in her heart to her daughter

B.mother was too serious about everything her daughter had done

C.mother cared much about her daughter in words

D.mother wrote to her daughter in careful words

2.The word “gulf” in the passage means ______.

A.deep understanding between the old and the young

B.different ideas between the mother and the daughter

C.free talks between mother and daughter

D.part of the sea going far in land

3.What did mother do with her daughter’s letter asking forgiveness?

A.She had never received the letter.

B.For years, she often talked about the letter.

C.She didn’t forgive her daughter at all in all her life.

D.She read the letter again and again till she died.

4.What’s the best title of the passage?

A.My letter to Mother B.Mother and Children

C.My mother’s Desk D.Talks between Mother and Me

Habits Of Highly Successful Students

Never Over-Study

When you spend too much time studying you will quickly lose focus and the time spent in studying will become ‘junk time’. You think you're studying but you're just sitting there re-reading the same sentence about 100 times and you're not getting anywhere. Instead, take regular breaks.1.Besides, it will give your mind some time to take in what you have been doing.

2.

Top students don't just randomly sit down and complete work. They actually plan what they are going to do: They actually plan the time they will study and they set goals for what will be achieved. If you want to be successful, do as successful people do. Set a plan and, set a goal and stick to it, which will create a routine and a routine is the first step towards developing a habit.3.

Front Up To The Toughest Work First

Many of us like to do the easy things first to build our confidence. That’s fair enough. The only challenge with this approach is that you use up your primary energy at the start of any study period and so if you are dealing with the easy parts with your primary energy your batteries will be low when it comes the time to deal with the hard part. So what happens then?4.We all do it. We really shouldn't, though. So develop the habit of giving your primary energy to the hard tasks and completing the easy stuff last.

5.

Do we really have to explain this? Just turn them off for an hour, we promise the world will still be there when you log back in! Don't text your friends, don't chat while doing memory activities, don't make phone calls, just focus on what you're doing. Even if you focus on work' for 15 minutes followed by 5 mins of chatting, it’s better than 30 minutes of work while also chatting! You get that right?

A. Plan Your Study

B. Achieve Your Goal

C. Positive habits decide future success.

D. Taking breaks can make you get everywhere.

E. You get tired and impatient and just give up.

F. Get Off Social Networking Sites And Turn Off The Phone

G. Taking breaks will make you energetic again and refresh your mind.

Mike Flint was Buffett’s airplane pilot(飞行员). Flint had also flown four US Presidents, so we can safely say he was good at his job. According to Flint, he was talking about his career(事业) priorities (优先事项) with Buffett when he asked him to go through a 3-step exercise.

STEP 1: Write down his top 25 career goals(目标). So, Flint took some time and wrote them down.

STEP 2: Review his list and circle his top 5 goals. Again, Flint took some time, made his way through the list, and at last decided on his 5 most important goals.

STEP 3: At this point, Flint had two lists. The 5 items he had circled were on List A and the 20 items he had not circled were on List B.

Flint said that he would start working on his top 5 goals right away. And then Buffett asked him about the second list, “And what about the ones you didn’t circle?”

Flint replied, “Well, the top 5 are my primary focus (焦点), but the other 20 come in a close second. I still plan to give them my efforts.”

Buffett said, “No. You’ve got it wrong. Everything you didn’t circle just became your Avoid-At-All-Cost list. These things get no efforts from you until you’ve succeeded with your top 5.”

This is why Buffett’s strategy (策略) is great. Items 6 through 25 are things you care about. So you can’t help paying attention to them. And then you get 20 distractions (分心的事物) to stop you from focusing on(集中) your top 5 goals. Spending time on secondary priorities is the reason you have 20 half-finished goals instead of 5 completed ones. So force yourself to focus. The most dangerous distractions are the ones you love, but that don’t love you back.

1.What did Flint think of his items on List B?

A.They were important too. B.They were much more difficult.

C.They were not worth his effort. D.They were impossible goals to reach.

2.What did Buffett suggest to Mike Flint?

A.Giving up List B halfway.

B.Choosing only one priority from the 25 items.

C.Paying no attention to List B before finishing List A.

D.Reviewing all the items and deciding on another top 5.

3.According to Buffett’s strategy, ________.

A.getting 20 half-finished goals is useful too

B.we should break away from distractions decidedly

C.it’s impossible for us to finish two tasks at a time

D.secondary priorities will prevent us from succeeding

4.What can be the best title for the passage?

A.List A or List B?

B.How to choose your priorities

C.The secret of Buffett’s great success

D.Avoid distractions to focus on your priorities

We don’t know when and where the next earthquake will hit. But we do know the importance of safety and preparation. The only way to be ready for the unexpected is to prepare ahead of time. It’s especially important if you live in earthquake zones. So here are some important steps to build your own Earthquake Action Plan.

1. Talk to your friends and families and decide on a place to meet if you’re separated after an earthquake.

2. Make an emergency(紧急情况)communication plan in case cell towers or phone lines are down. You can also ask relatives or friends outside your area to be your contacts.

3. Locate a safe place in every room of your house and discuss with your families the safest places to be during an earthquake. Remember, if you’re

a. Inside, get under something heavy like a study table or against an inside wall and cover your head.

b. Outside, stay away from buildings and get out into the open.

c. In your car, stop and stay in your seat. If you’re stopped near a building or under an overpass(天桥),try to safely move away from it.

4. Store first-aid kits(急救箱)anywhere you spend a lot of timehouse, car, workplace, etc. .

5. Pack plenty of batteries, flashlights, and bottles of water to prepare for power outages and water shortages.

6. Review your home’s important systemselectrical, gas, water, etc. and know how to operate them or shut them off in an emergency.

Although they’re somewhat unusual, earthquakes are incredibly terrible, overwhelming, and unpredictable forces of nature. But with some knowledge and preparation, we can mitigate risks and do the best we can to keep ourselves and our families safe.

1.Paragraph 1 mainly shows it’s very important to ______.

A.know the use of an Earthquake Action Plan

B.know when an earthquake will come

C.stay away from earthquake zones

D.prepare for an earthquake

2.First-aid kits should be kept in places ______.

A.that are very safe

B.where you often stay

C.that are under something heavy

D.that your friends and families know

3.An Earthquake Action Plan includes the following EXCEPT ______.

A.deciding where to meet with others after an earthquake

B.making sure that you have contacts out your area

C.practicing how to escape with your families

D.finding safe places in your house

4.What can best take the place of the underlined word “ mitigate”

A.Lower. B.Avoid.

C.Stop. D.Treat

She Walked Through Fire

On Thanksgiving weekend, the Heffelmire family gathered for a meal at their home. After dinner, the family went down to the finished basement to relax except Charlotte’s father, Eric, who was in the garage to fix his truck.

Around 8 p.m., Charlotte decided to check on her dad. She walked through the kitchen. When she opened the side door to the garage, black smoke rose up into the kitchen. She could barely make out her father lying on his back, trapped under the truck. He’d removed the front passenger-side tyre and raised the truck on a jack(千斤顶). The truck had slipped off the jack, and now the whole weight of the wheel was on his chest and shoulders.

Charlotte ran to the front of the truck and struggled to lift it. Eric was still conscious, and he yelled, “You got it! One more try!” She tried again and was able to tip the truck backward just enough for her to pull her dad by the shirt with both hands from under the truck.

She dragged him across the garage and 20 feet down the driveway. Then she ran back to the garage, which had burst into flames. “I was afraid the car was going to explode,” says Charlotte, so she climbed into the truck, which faced forward, turned the key, and pressed the gas pedal(油门). The car slowly rolled out, the metal wheel scratching loudly against the concrete.

Safely on the driveway, Charlotte stopped the truck and ran back to the basement. “There’s a fire! Everybody get out!” she yelled as she picked up her three-month-old niece and ran out. Outside, she handed the baby to her mom, and then ran around to the burning garage. She picked up a garden hose(水管)and sprayed the fire while calling 911.

A few minutes later, firefighters and an ambulance arrived. Charlotte was treated for second-degree burns on both her feet and face. Her dad had injuries on his chest and shoulders, as well as minor burns on his face. The garage and the house were damaged but the family survived.

The Heffelmires are staying in an apartment while their house is rebuilt. “Charlotte is a remarkable kid,” says her dad. Charlotte, however, simply says, “ I was saving my family and my house. I wasn’t going to let my dad die.”

Buy One Give One

Buy One Give One (B1G1) is a Singapore-based business and non-profit organization with a job to create a world full of giving. We help businesses around the world give back in meaningful ways so that they can create measurable and long-lasting influence. Since 2007, we have worked with more than 1,600 businesses creating more than 88 million giving activities.

Our business allows consumers, who may feel disconnected from the problems of the developing world, to become involved in social problems while still purchasing for themselves. For example, shoe brands like TOMS promise to donate one pair of shoes for every pair purchased. Soapbox gives soap to a needy child with every purchase. Watch company WeWood plants a tree every time you buy a watch. They have helped socially-conscious consumers purchase products and feel good about providing help to others.

See what some of our members say about being a part of B1G1.

*Karen Ormerod

Every product purchased at our store influences the lives of disadvantaged people in the world. I had never imagined I would be operating a business that could change people’s lives. We are making a real difference by just doing what we normally do. It is a wonderful experience.

*Ben Baker

What a good way of distributing resources to where they need to be, giving people the gifts of giving, and adding value to organizations along the way. We have already made 160,000 giving activities through B1G1. Giving has become a necessary part of our everyday business. It’s absolutely brilliant.

B1G1 focuses on the influence of giving on people’s lives rather than simply the amounts donated. Our programs stress giving habitually in order to create growing influence around the world. When you join the B1G1 giving program, you create your own unique giving stories.

We do hope you can become a member of us!

People keep organizing massive thousand person hide-and-seek games at Ikea (宜家) though it has _______ asked people not to play in its stores.

The first evidence of this _______ dates back to 2014, when a Belgian blogger named Elise De Rijck coordinated a hide-and-seek meet up at her local Ikea store to celebrate her 30th birthday. She _______ a Facebook group and invited her friends — but soon, thousands of people joined the group. Ikea Belgium got _______ of the plan and instead of _______ it, offered Ikea's full support, including _______ staff and security to host the event. From the photos that still _______ online, the event was a _______, filled with people hiding under bins and beds all over the store.

For Ikea, it was a(n) _______ thing. The company soon __________ similar Facebook groups organizing games and asked them to disband, noting __________ risks. And for good reason: Ikea is full of heavy furniture and forklifts (叉车).

Just this week, authorities in Glasgow __________ a new plan for a 3,000-person game in the Scottish city's Ikea store. Employees at the local Ikea __________ the plan on Facebook and called the police, who turned away the __________ gamesters. An Ikea spokesperson told The Scotsman, “We need to make sure people are safe, and that's hard if we don't know where they are.”

But at the same time, it's hard not to see the phenomenon as a potential __________ for the company, which has been working __________ to reinvent itself, rethinking its store designs and opening smaller urban stores that are really just a __________ for digital orders. It probably truly isn't safe to play guerilla-style games at a store that sells heavy furniture. Then again, Ikea has thousands of people __________ about driving to the very suburban box stores that wants people to visit. Isn't that an underlying opportunity, rather than a __________?

As Uber looks to expand its food courier service in Japan, the ride-share giant has faced road blocks rarely seen on the home soil of the United States. 1..

Uber Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi told Bloomberg News his company's food-delivery in Japan has taken an alternative route to delivering food. The country has strict laws against ride sharing, and its unemployment rate is at 2.4 percent, making a tight job market. With a growing demand for food delivery, more of the elderly population has applied to become couriers.

“The elderly are actually signing up for Eats couriers,” Khosrowshahi said. “Eats has been a huge success for us in Japan. 2..” In Japan, the majority of current food deliverers bring the product via scooter or bicycle, but the older generation of applicants prefer to do it by foot. 3.; adult diapers (尿布) outsell baby diapers. “This is one area unique to Japan, and we are looking if we can expand to the rest of the world,” Khosrowshahi said.

That plan includes increasing staffing levels in Japan by at least 30 percent over the next year, and these jobs aren't limited to grannies in sneakers. 4.. It's still a slow pace considering the San Francisco-based company has more than 22,000 employees.

Uber currently works with eight taxi cab companies in Japan, and the pedestrian courier method is a way to branch out into areas untouched so far. There are cab-hailing apps available, as well as Uber Black, a car-hire service that's only available in Tokyo for now. “It will take time, but we like what we see in terms of the potential of the market” Khosrowshahi said. “5..”

A.The population is aging

B.They also include sales, operations and account management

C.It is going to be a very effective introduction to the Uber brand

D.Last year, Uber shifted to partnerships with local taxi companies

E.Japan is a growing nation for food-delivery-still way far behind the US

F.But putting grandma and grandpa in running shoes seems to make sense

G.The innovations that we are going to make here are going to carry around the world

Blue Planet II's latest episode (情节) focuses on how plastic is having a destructive effect on the ocean and slowly poisoning our sea creatures. Researchers recently also found that sea creatures living in the deepest place on Earth, the Mariana Trench, have plastic in their stomachs. Indeed, oceans are drowning in plastic.

Though it seems that the world couldn't possibly function without plastics, plastics are a remarkably recent invention. The first plastic bags were introduced in the 1950s, the same decade that plastic packaging began gaining popularity in the United States. This growth has happened so fast that science is still catching up with the change. Plastics pollution research, for instance, is still a very early science.

We put all these plastics into the environment, but we still don't really know what the outcomes are going to be. What we do know, though, is disturbing. Ocean plastic is estimated to kill millions of marine animals every year. Nearly 700 species, including endangered ones, are known to have been affected by it. One in three leatherback turtles, which often mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, have been found with plastic in their bellies. Ninety percent of seabirds are now eating plastics on a regular basis. By 2050, that figure is expected to rise to 100 percent.

And it's not just wildlife that is threatened by the plastics in our seas. Humans are consuming plastics through the seafood we eat. I could understand why some people see ocean plastic as a disaster, worth mentioning in the same breath as climate change. But ocean plastic is not as complicated as climate change. There are no ocean trash deniers (否认者), at least so far. To do something about it, we don't have to remake our planet energy system.

This is not a problem where we don' t know what the solution is. We know how to pick up garbage. Anyone can do it. We know how to deal with it. We know how to recycle. We can all start by thinking twice before we use single-use plastic products. Things that may seem ordinary, like using a reusable bottle or a reusable bag-when taken collectively, these choices really do make a difference.

1.Why is plastics pollution research still a very early science?

A.The plastics pollution research is too difficult.

B.Plastics have produced less pollution than coal.

C.Plastics have gained popularity too fast for science to catch up.

D.The world couldn't possibly function without plastics.

2.How did the author support his opinion in Paragraph 3?

A.By citing quotes from leading experts. B.By making a comparison and contrast.

C.By listing examples from his own experience. D.By presenting solid statistics.

3.What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph?

A.We reap what we sow. B.The shortest answer is doing.

C.All things are difficult before they are easy. D.Actions speak louder than words.

4.What is the main idea of the passage?

A.The oceans become choked with plastic. B.Ocean plastic is a global issue.

C.Blue Planet II has left viewers heartbroken. D.Plastics gain in popularity all over the world.

Anyone caring about their health will be able to speak out a few of the major vitamins, and possibly take an educated guess at what they do. Vitamin C, found in oranges and other fruit and vegetables, is important for wound repair. And the much-talked-about “sunshine” vitamin D, produced by the skin in response to UV light, is essential for strong bones.

But what about vitamin P? It might well have you scratching your head. And that's not surprising: the term was first coined in the 1930s to describe a small group of compounds that provide pigment (天然色素) to plants, and were believed to have health benefits. A century later, these compounds are now better known as flavonoids (类黄酮)

Today, scientists have identified between 4,000 and 6,000 different kinds and we now know they are responsible for many of the flavors and smells of fruit and vegetables and also that they protect them from invaders such as pests and bacteria.

They are equally important nutrients for the body, helping maintain bones and teeth, and for the production of the protein collagen (胶原), which provides structure to blood vessels, muscles and skin.

They are also said to help the body deal with some of the key drivers of illness, including oxidation (氧化), a natural process by which the body's cells age and can become damaged and defective. That means they could help to protect against chronic diseases including cancer and heart disease.

1.What do we know about vitamin P?

A.We would scratch our head if we took it.

B.It refers to the compounds also called flavonoids.

C.It was made into a coin in the 1930s.

D.People didn't think it beneficial in the past.

2.Which is NOT the function of vitamin P for humans according to the passage?

A.Helping maintain bones and teeth.

B.Assisting in producing protein collagen.

C.Accelerating the circulation of the blood.

D.Aiding the body to handle the main factors of illness.

3.Which of the following best explains “defective” underlined in the last paragraph?

A.Harmful. B.Discouraged.

C.Vague. D.Deficient.

4.How does vitamin P help slow the aging process?

A.By fighting against oxidation. B.By maintaining bones.

C.By strengthening muscles. D.By protecting against chronic diseases.

Tim Ma's parents came to the United States from Taiwan in the 1970s. They opened a restaurant. It was not a success. They found success in America, however, in computers and engineering. In part because of their own experiences, Ma's parents hoped he would study to become an engineer or a doctor. They wanted financial security for their child.

Growing up, Ma considered many professions — writer, fireman, even president. Ma did well in math and science classes in high school. And he ended up choosing to study electrical engineering in college. Several engineering jobs later, though, Ma had a change of heart. He wanted to leave the engineering world behind and enter the restaurant business. It was in his blood. After all, his parents had owned a Chinese restaurant in Arkansas. His parents could not understand why he would want to leave such a good job to open a restaurant.

He wanted to study the fundamentals of cooking so that he could work as a chef in his own restaurant. Ma enrolled at the International Culinary Center in New York, where he received training in French cooking. “I have never cooked through my entire life up until this point.” Ma soon learned that he enjoyed cooking and he discovered it was similar to engineering. “Professional cooking is consistency, efficiency, cleanliness and it's all about the process of things which you know my background in engineering was. ”

In 2009, Ma opened his first restaurant in Virginia. His long hours paid off. Ma opened his fourth restaurant last year in Washington, D.C. He mixes his training in French cooking with his Chinese heritage to create new dishes. “I think in this country you can create your own success, just by working hard. Not because you're smarter than anybody, just by working hard. And that's why a lot of people end up coming to America.”

1.Why did Tim Ma's parents expect him to be an engineer or a doctor?

A.Because he can have enough money to support himself.

B.Because they wanted him to achieve their unfinished dream.

C.Because he has a great interest in math and science.

D.Because these two jobs both have high social statues.

2.What was Ma's parents' attitude towards his job changing?

A.Supportive. B.Unfavorable.

C.Neutral. D.Skeptical.

3.What does Tim Ma think about cooking?

A.It is something like engineering.

B.Cooking is all about cleaning.

C.You have to do the work consistently.

D.Efficiency is important in cooking.

4.Which of the following best describes Tim Ma?

A.Humorous and athletic.

B.Hard-working and determined.

C.Fashionable and aggressive.

D.Stubborn and devoted.
