If you could have a superpower, what would it be? Other than flying and communicating with someone from his mind (which, let’s be honest, would probably actually be awful), breathing underwater is one of the favorites. You can hang out with Aquaman and Ursula, and when the end of the world comes and we’re all living under water, you’ll be fine.

With this in mind, a student at the Royal College of Art, London has designed a 3D-printed amphibious garment called AMPHIBIO — essentially a set of gills() — for this very purpose.

According to Jun Kamei, a biomimicry designer and materials scientist, it is "for a future where humankind lives in the water".

With the world set for a global temperature increase of 3.2°C (5.7°F) by 2100, rising sea levels are a very real threat to large coastal cities, potentially affecting up to 2 billion people — or 26 percent of the current global population.

Kamei’s little device uses a specially designed porous(多孔的) material that fills oxygen again in the water and releases carbon dioxide. It is inspired by water-diving insects that create their own little scuba diving set by creating a protective bubble of air around their body thanks to their water repellent(防水的) skin.

The technology is easily 3D-printable too, which will be great when we need them together. These "gills" could replace heavy and clumsy scuba equipment, making it more similar to free diving but for longer. This could have immediate applications for underwater rescue plans — the 12 boys rescued by divers from a flooded cave in Thailand, for example, where it took weeks to work out how to get the boys and the vital breathing equipment through those narrow tunnels.

So far, the tech has only been tested as a working prototype, not actually on humans, so the dream may have to be on hold for now. And scaling up and testing on humans is Kamei’s next plan. This may sound unbelievable, but Kamei insists he has a much more optimistic vision of the future.

1.What can be inferred about Aquaman and Ursula?

A. They can read minds.

B. They can breathe underwater.

C. They often cause huge disasters.

D. They can’t live underwater.

2.What can we learn about AMPHIBIO?

A. It can produce oxygen in the water.

B. Its user can communicate with others from their mind.

C. It is the unique useful tool against the threat of rising sea levels.

D. The designer drew his inspiration from a certain natural species.

3.Why did the author mentioned the rescue of the boys in Thailand?

A. To present the success of the new device.

B. To compare the new device with the old one.

C. To prove the advantage of the new device.

D. To show the new device is easily 3D-printable.

4.What is the author’s attitude to the future of the new design?

A. Objective. B. indifferent. C. Doubtful. D. Critical.

It was once common to regard Britain as a society with class distinction. Each class had unique characteristics.

In recent years, many writers have begun to speak the 'decline of class' and 'classless society' in Britain. And in modern day consumer society everyone is considered to be middle class.

But pronouncing the death of class is too early. A recent wide-ranging society of public opinion found 90 percent of people still placing themselves in particular class; 73 percent agreed that class was still a vital part of British society; and 52 percent thought there were still sharp class differences. Thus, class may not be culturally and politically obvious, yet it remains an important part of British society. Britain seems to have a love of stratification.

One unchanging aspect of a British person's class position is accent. The words a person speaks tell her or his class. A study of British accents during 1970s found that a voice sounding like a BBC newsreader was viewed as the most attractive voice. Most people said this accent sounded 'educated' and 'soft'. The accents placed at the bottom in this study, on the other hand, were regional city accents. These accents were seen as 'common' and 'ugly'. However, a similar study of British accents in the US turned these results upside down and placed some regional accents as the most attractive and BBC English as the least. This suggests that British attitudes towards accent have deep roots and are based on class prejudice.

In recent years, however, young upper middle-class people in London, have begun to adopt some regional accents, in order to hide their class origins. This is an indication of class becoming unnoticed. However, the 1995 pop song 'Common People' puts forward the view that though a middle-class person may 'want to live like common people' they can never appreciate the reality of a working-class life.

1.A recent study of public opinion shows that in modern Britain ________.

A. people regard themselves socially different

B. most people belong to middle class

C. it is easy to recognize a person’s class

D. it is time to end class distinction

2.The word “stratification” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ________.

A. variety B. qualification C. authority D. division

3.British attitudes towards accent ________.

A. are based on regional status

B. have a long tradition

C. are shared by the Americans

D. have changed in recent years

4.What is the main idea of the passage?

A. The middle class is expanding

B. A person’s accent reflects his class

C. Class is a key part of British society

D. Each class has unique characteristics.

Most of us might only begin to think about dinner in the late afternoon: What should I make today? But Jelena Petrovic begins to think about her big meal early each morning. After morning tea, she and her husband, Milan, begin their plans for a traditional Serbian dish. The cooking method they use probably comes from Jelena’s mother or grandmother. Each recipe uses local foods found in Serbian markets.

Milan goes to the market to get the food they need. And the 69-year-old Jelena makes plans for how she will explain the cooking process to her 150,000 followers on YouTube. Once she is ready, Jelena films her cooking show from a small kitchen table. Milan holds the camera.

Jelena has many years of cooking experience at home. Ten years ago, she started an online program, where she shared recipes and cooking suggestions for meat, soup, bread, sweet treats and more.

Her number of followers grew over time. She decided to start a blog and began also making videos she filmed with her mobile phone. Today, her videos on YouTube have over 50 million views.

Last year, “Granny’s Kitchen” was named one of the Top 50 YouTube channels in Serbia.

Now her YouTube channel takes up much of her day. She works from her small kitchen and home office. Colorful plants and flowers fill the room. A bright cloth covers the table where she works. She says she gets tired from cooking long hours each day. But, she said, “My viewers wait for a new recipe every morning. If I am late, they will ask if I am well or what is happening.”

Often, her viewers write that the recipes bring back happy memories of their childhood. “My recipes are all local, traditional home-food recipes,” Jelena said. “I make things my mother or grandmother used to make.”

It’s spring in Southern California, when leaving the house means getting faced with the sweet smell of flowers. It’s also wildflower season, and thanks to some nice rains, we’re surrounded by super flowers. It got me thinking about the one sense, and thanks to some nice rains, we’re surrounded by super flowers. It’s also wildflower season, and thanks to some nice rains, we’re surrounded by super flowers. It got me thinking about the one sense I usually take for granted: Smell. And that’s especially true when it comes to teaching my child about the world.

There are some blocks and toy cars for touching, learning and body development. The toys are mainly mirrors, lights, things that make noise. Through these, children are introduced to materials, sights, and sounds. We also offer out children a daily touching of flavors and tastes. But how can we teach smell? Out of all the senses, smell is most closely linked with memory, but it’s the one I often forget in my own life unless I’m faced with it – the sweet orange flowers of spring, the movie popcorn smell that remains on my clothes after I leave the theater, the sharp smell of onions, or the carpets in a house where someone smoked for decades.

I want to develop that sense more for myself, but also want to cultivate(培养) it in my child too. So last weekend I took my son on a smelly walk, and we walked around the neighborhood for flowers to experience and discuss. He’s only 2.5 years old, so I still have to remind him to smell by sucking the air in through his nose, not blowing the air out like a dragon. And it actually went really well! I think nest time we might walk through my training: Smells “cozy.” Smells “like morning.” Smells “like grandpa.” (Grandpa lives in Ohio and we haven’t seen him in more than a year, so I don’t know what this means.)…

1.What does the author usually take for granted?

A.The timely rains. B.The sense of taste.

3.Why did the author remind the child to smell in a certain way?

A.It was the best way to smell.

B.The child was not old enough yet.

C.The child asked the author to do so.

D.The author dislike the child’s way to smell

4.How did the author feel about the training of smell last weekend?

A.Curious B.Worried

Parents can cut the chances of their children getting fat simply by keeping them longer at table. Just three extra minutes at a family mealtime could help prevent child fatness. The reasons might lie in communication and the importance of a scheduled mealtime.

Dr Barbara Fiese said, “Children, whose families have a 20-minute meal over four times a week, weigh lighter than kids who leave the table after15 to 17 minutes. Over time, those extra minutes per meal add up and become really powerful.”

Researchers studied 200 family mealtimes, testing the influences of mealtime habits of families with children in primary school. They found that families, who said that shared mealtimes were an important part of family life and had special meaning for them, were less likely to have fat children. Similarly, families who talked more together and communicated more positively during the meal, were more likely to have healthy-weight children.

Teaching families how to make full use of family mealtimes was a wise idea. “This is something we can do and teach. It’s also important to recognize the increasing differences of families and their complex living schedules that may challenge(挑战) their abilities to plan ahead and set some time to communicate with each other,” said Dr Fiese.

Families in poorer US neighborhoods faced more problems, including poor chances of getting healthy food. But even so, regular high quality family mealtimes made a difference to the children’s weight. Dr Fiese said, “Three to four extra minutes per meal will make a healthy weight more possible.”

When my best friend and I were teenagers, our favorite place to hang out was the Hallmark store. If we had money, we would choose a perfect card for each other and then share tears or smiles depending on what emotion the words expressed. In those coming years we developed a   friendship built on sincere feelings and we often found comfort in the words of a Hallmark card. I think it is perhaps since those years that I have become a greeting card collector.

The other day, while cleaning out the storage in my home, I came across the bag where I have kept greeting cards. They are the lasting messages that speak the meanings of my life. I pulled out a foolish-looking card. It has a stick drawing on the front that seems to be my portrait(肖像画), I laughed as I realized this is exactly how my oldest daughter saw her mum. Opening it up I saw a hand-drawn heart with eyes and a big smile. On the other side are some words “You are the best mum in the world!” This may be one card that Hallmark cards cannot compete with for it is a treasure more precious than gold. I can’t go back to where I’ve been but, from time to time, I can be taken into a welcomed memory trip.

These are the Hallmark moments of our lives. Words from once upon a time inspire us to appreciate the people in our lives who mean so much. When we sometimes have doubts, or when the world treats us unfairly, the encouraging words are there in black and white, sometimes drawn in a homemade stick drawing with a heart-shaped smiling face standing out from the rest.

3.Why does the author think the words on the cards mean a lot?

A.Because they make her full of thanks.

B.Because they are written in different colors.

C.Because they can help her overcome doubts.

D.Because they always inform her of the card collector.

4.What can be the best title for the text?

A.Words on the cards B.Collecting greeting cards is a hobby.

C.Life is a Hallmark card D.Memory in the childhood

Ways to make a great first impression

You’ve heard it a million times already, but it really does take but a few seconds to make that all-important first impression(印象). Here are some easy ways for you to impress your classmates or teachers.

1.

Before you shake hands with somebody, make sure that your hands are clean. The handshake should not be too strong or weak. Most people use their right hands, unless they have a reason to use the left. 2..

● Be on time

When meeting someone for the first time, arriving on time is as important as breathing. You may have an excuse, but that will leave the person who hardly knows you with a bad impression. As a general rule, plan to arrive about 30 minutes early. 3..

● Introduce yourself and ask for names

Make sure you properly introduce yourself. Ask for their names in a polite way. 4.. This will increase the chances of their remembering your name in the future. Always remember to stand up when greeting someone and be sure to introduce them to anyone you’re with.

● Make a good conversation

To get the most out of your discussion, try to find something common between the two of you. 5.. A person will feel more comfortable with someone who they can relate to(产生共鸣).

A. It’s better to be hanging around the place than be stuck in traffic

B. Repeat the name and use it later in conversation

C. Use proper body language

D. Have a proper handshake

E. However, don’t have your left hand in your pocket because this appears impolite

F. You’ll be in serious trouble if you leave a bad impression on them

G. It could be a similar taste in clothes or a common hobby

Internet use appears to cause a decline in psychological well-being(安康), according to research at Carnegie Mellon University.

Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more depression and loneliness than those who logged on less frequently, the two-year study showed. And it wasn’t that people who were already feeling bad spent more time on the Internet, but that using the Net actually appeared to cause the bad feeling.

Researchers are puzzling over the results, which were completely contrary to their expectations. They expected that the net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others.

The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may account for the drop in well-being, researchers suggested. Faceless, bodiless “virtual”(虚拟的)communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationship formed through it may be shallower. Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world via the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.

“But it’s important to remember this is not about the technology per se; it’s about how it is used,” says psychologist Christine Riley of Intel, one of the study’s sponsors. “It really points to the need for considering social effects in terms of how you design applications and services for technology.”

My father was left fatherless at the age of 12, and pretty much on his own then.

Because of that, he was never the loving type. He didn’t have time to offer a pat on the back or a loving hug(拥抱). He was built for work, and work he did—7 days a week—expecting my brothers and me to do the same.

Growing up, I spent much of my free time laboring with him on jobs around the house. To him, working alongside someone was the best way to show you cared. The way you felt about a person was clear from the fact you spent time with the person; you didn’t need to express your feelings. As far as I know, he never did. Except once.

I was 22, graduated from college, and leaving home for the last time. He and I had loaded my things into the car and were talking in the garage. Without warning, he wrapped me in his huge arms and hugged me tight.“You were always my favorite,”he said.“I love you, and I’m going to miss you.”

With that, he shooed(用声驱赶)me into the car and then left for the house, tears in his eyes.

I was floored by his response—and then felt proud, pleased and grateful. Yet some small part of me also wondered why it had taken him so long to express his love.

I can accept now that it wasn’t possible for him to be warm—his feelings were buried too deeply under the layers of a tough life. Thanks to my father’s once-in-a-lifetime hug, I’ve come to realize something he never could. A hug is more than simple physical touch. It is a lightning-like connection between two people. A link that expresses love, encouragement, comfort-all the emotions that can strengthen a relationship, even turn a life around.
