An increasing number of young people tend to rent clothes recently. Clothing rental is a hot new industry and retailers are entering this in hopes of attracting newly conscientious shoppers. This past summer alone, Urban Outfitters, Macy’s , Bloomingdale’s, American Eagle, and Banana Republic have all announced rental services—a sure sign of changing times.

But is renting fashion actually more environmentally-friendly than buying it, and if so, how much more? Journalist and author Elizabeth Cline explored into this question and she concluded that its not as sustainable as it seems.

Take shipping, for example, which has to go two ways if an item is rented—receiving and returning. Cline writes that consumer transportation has the second largest carbon footprint(碳足迹)of our collective fashion habit after manufacturing.

She writes, “An item ordered online and then returned can emit(排放)20 kilograms of carbon each way, and up to 50 kilograms for rush shipping. By comparison, the carbon impact of a pair of jeans purchased in physical stores and washed and worn at home is 33.4 kilograms, according to a 2015 study by Levi's.”

Then there’s the burden of washing, which has to happen for every item when returned, regardless of whether or not it was worn. For most rental services, this usually means dry-cleaning, a high-impact and polluting process. 70 percent of US dry cleaners used perchloroethylene, a carcinogenic(致癌的)air pollutant, which can produce harmful waste and air pollution .

Le Tote is the only service that uses ‘wet cleaning’ for 80 percent of its items and strives to avoid dry cleaning unless absolutely necessary.

Lastly, Cline fears that rental services will increase our appetite for fast fashion, simply because it’s so easily accessible. There’s something called ‘share-washing’ that makes people engage in more wasteful behaviors precisely because a product or service is shared and thus is perceived as more eco-friendly.

Renting clothes is still preferable to buying them cheap and pitching them in the trash after a few wears, but we shouldn’t let the availability of these services make us complacent(自鸣得意的). There’s an even better step --and that’s wearing what is already in the closet.

    Top 3 Self-Discipline Techniques

Self-Discipline is the key to leading a healthier, happier and more successful life. 1. We have shared some self-discipline techniques below. Follow these self-discipline techniques to start living a better life.

1.Start small

The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step, as the proverb goes. 2. Instead,  stamina(耐力) is built up by doing a little more than the previous day’s target.

The same goes for discipline. Start by trying to carry out self-discipline techniques little by little every day for big results. Increase your goals over time.

2.3.

Staying self-disciplined requires motivation. It can be hard to stay motivated if you feel like you haven’t made any progress so far. Tracking progress makes you aware of how much you’ve done and encourage you to keep going.

3.Exercise your willpower

4.Some days, sticking to the task is going to be difficult but by reminding yourself of the end in mind and how much the goal means to you, you will be able to ignore temporary temptations for long term gain.

The above-mentioned self-discipline techniques have been proven to be extremely effective.

5. And it is the key to living a happy and fulfilling life.

A. Measure your goals.

B. Build a support system.

C. However, it is easier said than done.

D. Willpower and self-discipline go hand in hand.

E. Self-discipline is linked to effective time management.

F. Self-discipline is a feature found in many successful people.

G. You don’t train for a marathon by running 10 Kilometers on the first day.

Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only(要是……就好了)”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment.

My father is famous in our family for saying “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.

I don’t only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. It’s equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you.” When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’t be here. But then I thought about the fact that he was 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.

I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.

1.Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule?

A.Start the car the moment everyone is seated.

B.Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.

C.Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.

D.Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.

2.The underlined word “foregone” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to______.

A.take up B.stay away

C.run out of D.give up

3.The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to _______.

A.keep her appointment with the eye doctor

B.meet her father who was already an old man

C.join in the holiday celebration of the company

D.finish her work before the deadline approached

4.What is the best title for the passage?

A.The Peace of Mind B.The Most Useful Rule

C.The Two Saddest Words D.The Emotional Well-being

This is my son Matthew's last night at home before college. I know that this is good news. I feel proud that Matthew will go to a great school. I know that this is the finest hour. But looking at the suitcases on his bed sends me out of the room to a hidden corner where I can't stop crying.

Through the sorrow, I feel a rising embarrassment. “Pull yourself together!” I tell myself. There are parents sending their kids off to battle zones. How dare I feel so shocked and upset?

One of the great gifts of my life has been having my boys, Matthew and John. Through them, I have explored the mysterious, complicated bond between fathers and sons. As My wife and I raised them, I have discovered the love and loss between my father and me. After my parents' divorceI spent weekends with my dad in Ohio. By the time Sunday came around, I was unable to enjoy the day's activities because I was already afraid of the goodbye of the evening.

Now, standing among Matthew’s accumulation of possessions, I realize it's me who has become a boy again. All my sadness and longing to hold on to things are back, sweeping over me as they did when I was a child.

His bed is tidy and spare. It already has the feel of a guest bed. In my mind I replay wrapping him in his favorite blanket. That was our nightly routine until one evening he said,” DaddyI don't think I need a blanket tonight.” I think of all the times we lay among the covers reading. I look at the bed and think of all the recent times I was annoyed at how late he was sleeping. I’ll never have to worry about that again, I realize.

For his part, Matthew has been a rock. He is treating his leaving as just another day at the office. And I'm glad. After all, someone’s got to be strong. I’m proud that he is charging into the first chapter of his adult life with such confidence.

On the first day during the winter vacation, my classmates and I went to the Nursing Home and did some voluntary works. On our arrive, we visited the elderly in their rooms, presented them with flowers and self- made cards to show our respect and love. Then we did some cleaning or washing for them under the help of the nurses. Having been done all these, we sat in the yard chatting with the elderly people. We talked about our old days, changes of our city, and anything they were interested. When it was time for us to leave, the elderly people thank us for our kindness. They said it was so a beautiful day that they would remember it forever.

Study Habits You Should Be Practising

With exams, essays, projects, and many deadlines for different things, effective study habits are necessary. If you are in need of a bit of an improvement, keep reading for the top four study habits that you should be practicing.1.

●Make and use flashcards.

2.By using flashcards with a question on one side and the answer on the other, you will

force your brain to recall the necessary information. Even if you struggle a bit with a card, you will still be actively revising the necessary material.

●Revise, revise, revise!

Many students put off studying until just before the exam, with the more hardworking students giving themselves a week or two before a test.3.It's best to revise the information a little bit every day, so that you are not upset when a test comes around.

●Read aloud to yourself

Read aloud to yourself and, as silly as it may seem, pretend you are teaching a student. Read your notes aloud, pretend you are lecturing.4.

●Make a mind-map

One method of revising is to make a mind-map. This is a bit like a flowchart, in which you start with one core concept in the center, and then branch off into connected sections.5.

These are the four most effective study habits, and something all successful students do. Make sure you are on top of your game by following these study methods!

A. Use these graded tests to create a new practice test.

B. Having these great study habits can make things easier.

C. Do this over and over, until you no longer have to look at your notes.

D. However, it's actually an ineffective method of preparing and studying.

E. Flashcards are designed to improve active memory recall of information.

F. You will be able to picture your written notes when you are taking the exam.

G This will help you to connect everything together and associate the terms with one another.

Pachyrhynchus weevils (球背象鼻虫) are found on most islands in the eastern Pacific Ocean. These weevils could not fly. But why are they so widespread? Wen-San Huang of the National Museum of Natural Science in Taiwan thinks he has the answer.

One theory, which dates back to 1923, is that the beetles float from place to place by a tiny air cavity beneath its outer shell.

Dr Huang began his research into the weevils and discovered that the beetles do float. But he also reports floating in seawater does not do them much good. All 57 adults he tried it with died within two days. Clearly, adult weevils are not good sailors.

Pachyrhynchus weevils have a love for laying their eggs inside the fruit of a plant called the fish-poison tree. This reproduces reminding us of coconut palms. It drops its fruits into the ocean, which carries them away to come up on distant beaches. Coconuts are protected from being eaten on their travels by having a hard, thick shell. Fish-poison-tree fruit are also protected from hungry sea creatures. But in their case, as their name suggests, the protection is chemical.

Given the relationship between weevils and plant, Dr Huang wondered how beetle larvae (幼虫) would fare if they were deep inside a piece of fruit floating in seawater.

So he tested this as well. His experiment suggested that such larvae are 'tolerant of saline (含盐的) conditions.

Specifically, of 18 grubs () thrown into seawater inside a piece of fruit, two survived for six days. Moreover, these larvae went on to develop into healthy, sexually mature adults. So Dr Huang argues that such numbers would easily support the immigration of weevils to the islands.

He also observes that the Kuroshio Current, which carries water from the Philippines, past Japan and onwards into the Pacific, moves so swiftly that a piece of fruit caught in it could easily travel 90km in a day, enabling the flightless beetle to cover the distance of 400km between the islands effectively.

1.What did Wen-San Huang find in his research?

A.The old theory accounts for weevils. B.Adult weevils are good at floating.

C.Fish-poison-tree fruit protect weevils. D.The weevils cross the islands in a day.

2.What can the underlined word "fare" probably mean?

A.Survive. B.Travel.

C.Grow. D.Float.

3.How do weevils succeed in immigrating between the islands?

A.By travelling with sea creatures.

B.By wearing shells for protection.

C.By laying eggs in coconuts sinking under the sea.

D.By staying in the floating fish-poison-tree fruits.

4.What's the author's purpose of writing the text?

A.To introduce the research result.

B.To compare the coconut palms and weevils.

C.To tell how weevils immigrate to the islands.

D.To praise Wen San Huang for his research.

Artificial intelligence (AD) technology may soon be a useful tool for doctors. It may help them better understand and treat diseases like breast cancer in ways that were never before possible.

Rishi Rawat, who teaches AI at the University of Southern California's (USC) Clinical Science Center in Los Angeles, is part of a team of scientists who are researching how AI and machine learning can more easily recognize cancerous growths in the breast.

Rawat provides information about cancer cells to a computer. He says this data helps the machine learn. “... You can put the data into them and they will learn the patterns and the pattern recognition that's important to making decisions"" David Agus, another USC researcher, believes that machines are not going to take the place of doctors, but they will help make certain decisions and look for things that the human brain can't recognize.

Once a confirmed cancerous growth is removed, doctors still have to treat the patient to reduce the risk of cancer returning. The form of treatment depends on the kind of cancer. Currently, researchers take a thin piece of tissue, put it on a small piece of glass and add color to better see the cells. The process could take days or even longer. Scientists say artificial intelligence can do something better than just count cells. Through machine learning, it can recognize complex patterns or structures, and learn how the cells are organized. They hope that machines will soon be able to make a quick identification of cancer that is free of human mistakes.

"All of a sudden, we have the computing power to really do it in real time...We couldn't have done this, but now it's all changed."" Agus adds that the process could be done for almost no cost in the developing world." He says that having a large amount of information about patients is important for a machine to effectively do its job in medicine.

The USC researchers are now only studying breast cancer. But doctors predict artificial intelligence will one day make a difference in all forms of cancer.

1.What does the author intend to tell us?

A.AI technology will aid to predict some cancers.

B.Doctors will be replaced by AI machines.

C.AI technology will help cancer treatment.

D.Doctors will get improved with AI technology.

2.What is vital for an AI machine to do its medical job according to USC researchers?

A.Cell counting machines. B.Well designed process.

C.Patterns of cancer. D.Enough information of patients.

3.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.When is the best time to remove cancer. B.Why USC researchers argue about AI.

C.What treatment AI technology provides. D.How AI technology helps in medicine.

4.What section of a magazine is the text probably taken from?

A.Entertainment & Arts. B.Science & Technology.

C.World News. D.Health Report.

At the end of 1978, China put forward a package of new thoughts on national development. The most important of them was to shift the priority of the nation to economic development, which has since become the central task of CPC organizations and governments at all levels. Economic growth was the primary measurement of the development of a region and performance of an official. It became national agreement that economic growth offered the solution to the problems facing China.

Seeing that manufacturing was a strong promoter of economic growth, China's central and local governments put great emphasis on it. But in the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s the country was short of money to build up this capital-intensive (资本密集) sector, which requires buying equipment and land, building factories, and hiring workers. It therefore looked to foreign investors who were looking for opportunities in the Chinese market.

Foreseeing the multiple benefits of foreign investment including tax contribution, job creation, raise in local income, local governments raced to look for foreign capital. To compete against their peers, some regions offered extra favorable policies like tax cuts or breaks, discounted land prices or even free land. Some even went to the extent of lowering or abandoning environmental protection requirements.

While going after foreign investors, regional governments also struggled to seek domestic banks for loans to local enterprises. Meanwhile, they set up their own financing platforms to raise funds for local manufacturing and infrastructure (基础设施) to stimulate economic growth.

These efforts paid off. The economy rose rapidly all over the country, with few regions reporting GDP growth rate below 10 percent. A series of new infrastructure was completed, and manufacturing sprang in both rural and urban areas. But the side effects soon came up. The supply of low-priced or even free land to foreign investors led to a sharp rise in land development for industrial projects and a steep fall in farmlands. Realizing these problems, China began to correct its neglect of other aspects during the pursuit of economic growth.

1.What central task did the Chinese government advocate in 1978?

A.Environmental protection. B.Economic growth.

C.Manufacture promotion. D.Capital accumulation.

2.How did China solve the capital problem?

A.By loaning money from foreign banks. B.By selling equipment and land.

C.By seeking foreign investors. D.By raising funds from the public.

3.Which of the following statements is True?

A.China's economy experienced ups and downs.

B.Foreign investment was a win-win policy.

C.GDP growth in many regions was below 10 %.

D.Policies were adopted for better environment.

4.What can be the best title for the text?

A.China's Problems in Promoting Economy

B.China's Policy in Foreign Investment

C.China's Success in Fighting Against Poverty

D.China's Efforts in Economic Development

Still remember the films which have made you thrilled? Here are some recommended ones by the BBC in 2019.

Captain Marvel

Brie Larson stars as Marvel's latest superhero, Carol Danvers, who discovers her powers as Captain Marvel. Set in the 1990s, the story has Danvers searching for her true identity while tying to save the earth during a war between alien races. The film Avengers may get more pre –release attention, but Captain Marvel might be the fresher film in the release.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Quentin Tarantino's films always make noise. Leonardo DiCaprio plays the fading star of a television Western and Brad Pitt is his stunt (特技) double, in a story set in 1969, soon before the Manson murders. All those stars don't come cheap: the film reportedly cost $95 million. With its name similar to Once Upon a Time in the West, this film clearly has big ambitions.

The Lion King

Disney gives one of its most beloved animated films a high-tech remake, using lifelike computer images. James Earl Jones, once again the voice of Mustafa, was apparently the only irreplaceable actor from the 1994 film. Here Donald Glover is the voice of the adult Simba. The theme singer Elton John has reworked songs from the original.

Downton Abbey

Downton Abbey

The Crawley family and their servants all return, except for the characters who have been killed off. The story picks up around 1927, after the series ended on a happy note, with no one in prison and romance all around. Writer Julian Fellowes must have cooked up some disasters. The film's new characters include Imelda Staunton as Lord Grantham's cousin.

1.Which film is considered a science fiction?

A.Captain Marvel. B.Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

C.The Lion King. D.Downton Abbey.

2.Which is True about Once Upon a Time in Hollywood?

Anyone who has children has likely heard "I'm bored!" too many times. When you're on a budget, it can be tough to think of ways to entertain the family that don't cost a lot of money. 1.

Head to the library, and not just check out books. Look at the library's community events calendar. Most libraries have everything from story times for children to game nights for teens. 2.

Camp in a national forest or build a sandcastle. A lot of the sites are free to use, though they do lack facilities. 3. If there's no beach nearby, do the same in the sandbox at a playground.

4. Most cities have at least one local community center. There, you can pick up a park and recreation schedule, with information on free events taking place throughout the year, such as hikes, holiday parties, art festivals, outdoor movies and concerts in the park.

Tour the fire station. Most fire fighters will give you and your kids a free tour,as long as you call and schedule ahead of time. 5. For safety reasons, fire stations do not generally accommodate children under the age of four.

Check out a state park. Stop by the ranger station and ask about free programmes for kids, such as nature walks and hands-on science classes. Some parks have junior ranger badges(徽章)children can earn by completing conservation related activities.

A. Visit the local community center.

B. Go to the beach and build a sandcastle.

C. The time when children visit is very important.

D. Spend more time finding much free information.

E. Kids can learn about fire safety and tour the facilities.

F. Many libraries also have enrichment classes offered free of charge.

G. Fortunately, there are many options available to you if you know where to look.

If you have never ever heard of pawpawyou are not alone. Most Americans do not know of the fruitalthough it is native to the United States. Oncehoweverit was one of the most popular fruits in North America. Happilythose who love the pawpaw are trying to return it to its former position in American foods.

The pawpaw is a kind of fruit that grows on trees found all over the eastern United States. It is similar in size to a typical mango. It has a dull green-colored skinand a softalmost creamy orange inside. Most people agree that the pawpaw tastes like a combination of bananasapricots (杏)and mangos. Most people are very surprised by its sweet taste. The fruit has a very short harvest seasonfrom two to three weeks in September and October.

The pawpaw has never been sold commercially. The fruit requires a very special environment-lowwet areas that sometimes flood. In additionthe fruit is good to eat for only two to three days after harvesting. This makes it hard to sell anywhere distant from the pawpaw trees.

Planters are again growing pawpaw trees and harvesting the fruit. In several states farmers have organized “pawpaw festivals” to reintroduce the food to people.

Farmers are trying to grow different kinds of paw paws that will be easier to ship and sell commercially. Donna and Jim Davis are pawpaw farmers in WestminsterMaryland. They told National Public Radio that they purchased their pawpaw trees in the 1990s and now sell the fruit at farmer markets and online.

So, who knows? Maybe the pawpaw will show up soon at a market near you.

1.What is the pawpaw's most outstanding nature?

A. It grows on trees all over the US.

B. Its sour taste is like an apricot.

C. It looks like a combination of bananas and mangos.

D. It is very rich in sugar.

2.Why is it difficult for the pawpaw to become a big business?

A. It has to be sold far from the pawpaw tree.

B. It is difficult to harvest in the low and wet areas.

C. It is hard to keep its freshness for long.

D. It needs expensive transportation to the market.

3.What do farmers do to deal with the disadvantage of paw paws?

A. They advertise on National Public Radio.

B. They plant improved pawpaw trees.

C. They organize pawpaw festivals.

D. They sell the fruit at farmer markets.

4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A. A forgotten American fruit is becoming popular again.

B. Fruit of pawpaw plays an important part in America.

C. Most people have hardly eaten fresh paw paws.

D. A traditional fruit has changed people's diet.

Recently, a scientist did some experiments. He left a group of 4-year-olds in a room with a bell and a candy. If they rang the bell, he would come back and they could eat the candy. If, however, they didn’t ring the bell and waited for him to come back on his own, they could then have two candies.

In the videos of the experiments, he can see the children hiding their eyes, trying to exercise self-control so they can wait and get two candies. The results are different. Some broke down and rang the bell within a minute. Others lasted 15 minutes.

The children who waited longer went on to get higher academic scores. They got into better colleges and had better adult success. The children who rang the bell quickest were more likely to have received worse teacher and parental evaluations (评价) 10 years later and were more likely to have drug problems at age 32.

The experiments are worth noting because people spend a lot of time thinking about how to improve education, and how to become rich. But when the result is not good, they will come back to ask “How do we get people to get the sort of self-control that leads to success?” This is to enter the world of human nature.

So these experiments, along with everyday experience, tell us that self-control is most important. Young people who can sit through sometimes boring classes to get a degree can work hard in order to learn a language well. They can avoid drugs and alcohol. For people without self-control skills, however, school is a series of failed and painful experience. No wonder they drop out and their later life is a group of foolish ideas, such as drug use, stealing and so on.

1.The scientist did some experiments to ________.

A. find good ways of training children to learn

B. show that children’s education is important

C. test children’s self-control and later success

D. test children’s intelligence of ringing the bell

2.What do the underlined words “broke down” probably mean?

A. failed to wait. B. kept waiting.

C. hid the candy. D. ate the candy.

3.How long did the scientist’s experiments last according to the text?

A. Just 15 minutes. B. Within 10 years.

C. Less than 14 years. D. About 28 years.

4.What will the children without self-control do at school according to the text?

A. They will improve their education.

B. They will suffer a lot from boring lessons.

C. They will become very rich and successful.

D. They will work hard to catch up with others.
