Christmas is a time for eating great food, giving and receiving presents, and most importantly spending time with your family watching some classic Christmas movies.

The Grinch (2000)

This is a Christmas must-watch and one of Jim Carrey's best performances. It was also originally a nursery tale book written by Dr Seuss. It's the story of a green monster who wants to ruin Christmas but who in the end discovers the power of love and generosity. I promise it's a great film with plenty of laughs along the way.

Love Actually (2003)

While this is not a personal favourite of mine, people in the UK absolutely love this film. It has many featuring actors and actresses. It might be a little difficult to follow as there are complex plots, so I recommend watching a translated version or enabling subtitles (字幕) in your native language. However, the heart-warming elements of the film make it worth watching.

Home Alone (1990)

This amusing masterwork is one of my favourite films of all time. It tells the story of a boy, Kevin, who is left alone in his house when his large family forgets to take him on vacation with them. While the families are away, burglars try to rob the house and Kevin must protect his home by setting traps. The trips, falls and traps will have you laughing out loud as you watch a 10-year-old boy beat two grown men.

Miracle on 34th Street (1994)

You can't have Christmas in an English-speaking country without watching this movie. It's not funny like Home Alone or The Grinch, but it is incredibly touching. It's about a man who claims to be Santa, but nobody believes him except a lawyer and a little girl. The story-line may seem a little childish but you can enjoy it at any age.

1.Which film is adapted from a fairy tale?

A.Home Alone B.The Grinch.

C.Love Actually. D.Miracle on 34th Street.

2.What is Home Alone mainly about?

A.An unsuccessful family vacation. B.A 10-year-old boy's practical jokes.

C.A terrible suffering to a little boy. D.A boy protecting home by himself.

3.Why is Miracle on 34th Street so popular?

A.For its famous actors and actresses. B.Because of its funny story.

C.Due to its childish storyline. D.Owing to its moving plots.

Let's face it, most of us are really busy. So busy that we don't make time for creativity. Even those who work in creative fields are probably at a point where true creativity is being pushed behind more pressing tasks. This doesn't necessarily have to be so. 1.

Schedule It

Put your creativity tasks into your calendar-you have a very important meeting with yourself! 2. All you really need is about 15 minutes a day and that can really start to swing the pendulum (钟摆 )  in the other direction.  I find that 15 minutes in the morning after a fresh cup of coffee is an ideal time for some creative work. You can plan a day to go out and explore something new to get inspired, whatever you feel is going to fuel your creative energy. Schedule these into your month, as well.

Shift Your Mindset

Like I mentioned, sometimes it has to start with your own belief. 3., then it's not going to happen. I found that once I redesigned my business to free up more time for me, 1 was able to really let go of guilt and realize that creativity is self-care. Even if it's not going to better your career. it's likely going to "better" you, and that makes it all worthwhile.

Make Space

4.,but how about physical space? Is there a place in your home that you can devote to your creativity? Maybe it's in your office. You can have a spot with your art utensils. musical instruments, your favorite books. Or maybe it's in your backyard and you have a spot where you drink tea and practice writing. Sometimes it may be a corner of pillows in your bedroom that you snuggle in and listen to music. Having a devoted spot helps to foster it as a daily practice that you look forward to.

5.

Just like all your good habits, you have to make them routine. Once you get used to carving out time and space for your creativity, you will wonder how you ever lived without it!

A. Be Curious

B. Make It Routine

C. It can be such a waste of time

D. But seriouslv, this really helps

E. We've talked about mental space

F. If you're not valuing your creative time

G. Here are some easy tips for making it a priority

Water is a necessity of life. Rain, especially, helps plants grow and stay green. But too much rain, especially in cities, can lead to flooding. That can cause waste water systems to overflow and send pollutants into rivers and other waterways. To fight the problem, several cities in the United States are starting programs like rooftop gardens.

A team at the University of the District of Columbia in the nation's capital has created a garden on the top of one school building. The garden holds many kinds of plants to help absorb rainwater and grow food at the same time. Architect David Bell has designed five "green roofs" for the university. He says he is excited about the project because "it meant doing something more than just dealing with storm water management. It took advantage of a resource above the city and these flat roofs that aren't doing anything really became something that was about urban agriculture. " Rainwater is collected in large containers and sent through a system that waters the rooftop garden. The roof is filled with green life that appeals to insects.

In cities, “you don't have that many spaces to choose from and so rooftops are just (unused) space," says Caitlin Arlotta. She is a student in the school's Urban Agriculture program. The project is part of a research program to see which plants do well on rooftops. The researchers are looking at plants including strawberries, tomatoes and sweet potatoes. The university also has other green spaces. "We also have our own farm experiments," Arlotta said.  “ Within each of those growing systems, we want to be able to tell people which sorts of these crops grow the best. "

Sandy Farber Bandier helps run UDC's Master Gardener program. It seeks to improve cities and make them beautiful by training people to become Master Gardeners. She says she's been surprised by the garden's output. ”My biggest surprise was that we produced 4, 250 pounds of produce the first year and was able to spread that to people in need. " She also likes being able to show people who live in D. C. and others beyond the nation's capital what and how food can be grown on a rooftop. “This is the future for food. You grow it here, you prepare it in a commercial kitchen, you distribute through farmers markets, food trucks, and then you recycle. "

1.What do we know about the rooftop gardens?

A.Rooftop gardens are very common in average neighborhoods.

B.There are many sorts of plants there which help take in rainwater.

C.They're playing an important role in the city's food supply.

D.Rooftop gardens are no more than containers to collect rainwater.

2.What can we infer from Paragraph 3?

A.Rooftops can offer enough space to plant crops.

B.Many plants like strawberries can grow well on rooftops.

C.Some univercity students are participating in the Urban Agriculture program.

D.The plants in rooftop gardens are attractive to many insects.

3.How does Sandy Farber Bandier feel about the future of rooftop gardens?

A.Confident.

B.Doubtful.

C.Worried.

D.Ambiguous.

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.Rainwater Necessity for Plant Life

B.Green Roofs-The Future of Urban Agriculture

In 1953,a mountain climber reported seeing a bar-headed goose soar over the peak of Mount Everest (珠穆朗玛 ).  It was thought impossible.  Now researchers who raised 19 of the geesenamed for the black stripes on the backs of their headshave shown the birds really fly so high.

The team trained the youngsters to fly in a large wind tunnel wearing backpacks and face masks full of sensors that recorded their heart rate. blood oxygen levels, temperature, and metabolic ratehow many calories they burned per hour. The researchers simulated(模拟)10w-, medium-, and high-altitude conditions by altering the concentration of oxygen supplied to face masks worn by each goose as it flew in the tunnel.

Birds already have a better heart and lungs than mammals for sustained physical activity. And researchers knew that bar-headed geese have even larger, thinner lungs that let them breathe more deeply and an even bigger heart to pump more oxygen to muscles than other birds.

The wind tunnel experiments showed that when the concentration of oxygen was at its lowest-like the 7% found on top of Mount Everest versus 21% at sea level—the geese's heart rate and frequency of wing beats remained the same even as their metabolic rate dropped. Somehow, the birds managed to cool down their blood-the measured blood temperature droppedso it could take in more oxygen, the researchers report today in eLife. This cooling likely helps compensate for the very thin air, the team says.

Although well trained, the birds were only willing to stay in the air a few minutes-or Iesswhen wearing their backpacks and flying at 6ihigh" altitudes. So it's not clear whether these adaptations alone are what make it possible to fly the 8 hours it takes to climb over Mount Everest. But those few minutes showed these geese really could fly over the top of Mount Everest.

1.Why did the researchers raise 19 bar-headed geese and train them?

A.To test the flying height and speed of them.

B.To confirm they could fly over Mount Everest.

C.To observe them flying through the wind tunnel.

D.To see how many calories they burned per hour.

2.What can we learn from the wind tunnel experinent?

A.It was carried out at very high altitude.

B.The geese managed to breathe less when their blood decreased.

C.The geese could live through the lowest concentration of oxygen.

D.It shows the geese could fly at high altitude for long.

3.What still puzzles scientists about the geese?

A.Whether they have super hearts and lungs.

B.Whether they have muscles pumped more oxygen to.

C.Whether they are willing to wear backpacks and face masks.

D.Whether they can manage to fly 8 hours to climb over Mount Everest.

4.Where does the text most probably come from?

A.A science fiction.

B.A climbing guide.

C.A travel brochure.

D.A science report.

Brandon Olsen and Tylor Fritz of Hometown Sanitation (公共卫生) left gifts for three sisters who waved to them each Thursday after learning that one of them, 3-year-old Rose, had been fighting cancer.

The men also gave their parents free garbage service for one year.

“When they did that, it was a few weeks before the diagnosis (诊断) when every day just felt so impossible,” said Rose's mother, Angie Evenson, of Blue Earth, Minnesota. “Nothing in reality changes Rose’s diagnosis. But what they did makes us feel we are truly not alone in this fight.”

With binoculars (双筒望远镜) in hand, Rose and her two sisters, Grace, 5 and Sophia, 2 sat by the window and waved at their garbage men, Olsen and Fritz, as they drove by on their weekly route.

Olsen, 29, and Fritz, 24, told ABC News that the girl’s smiling faces are what they look forward to while working. They even left Halloween candy for the girls this year to show their appreciation. They hope that more and more people can understand and support their work.

But weeks later, Evenson wrote Olsen and Fritz a note explaining that little Rose wouldn’t be able to wave to them for a while since she'd be undergoing chemotherapy (化疗). Rose had been diagnosed with Stage 4 kidney cancer in September.

“As a father of three, it changed my outlook on things,” Olsen said. “It opened my eyes…you don’t know what someone else is going through.”

Fritz said he cried when he read the note. “I got to the chemo part and there were tears running down my face,” he recalled. “I don’t have any children of my own, but I can imagine if someone very close to me is diagnosed as cancer, I’ll be heartbroken.”

“Rose is being treated at Sanford Children’s Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She will miss a few more Thursdays, when she can wave to her garbage men, but her chemo sessions will be switched to Mondays soon and she’ll be back by the window early next year. I have confidence in Rose’s recovery.” her mother said.

1.How did the garbage men help Rose’s family?

A.They took the sick girl to hospital regularly.

A.They made the family famous. B.They encouraged the family.

C.They gave Angie Evenson a good lesson. D.They doubted about the doctor’s diagnosis.

3.What do the garbage men wish for in terms of the girls’ smiling faces?

A.People’s appreciation for their work.

B.Good friendship with the young girls.

C.Making more efforts to do their work well.

D.The girls’ family’s caring more for their children.

4.What can we infer from the passage?

A.Olsen has three sons. B.Fritz has not got married.

C.Fritz is faced with a serious disease. D.Evenson is optimistic about Rose’s condition.

The Amazon Rainforest: A Natural Treasure

Welcome to the Amazon rainforest. As the largest rainforest in the world, it plays a significant role in maintaining the fine balance of the Earth's ecosystem.

The Amazon rainforest crosses into eight countries. With an area of around 5.5 million square kilometres, the Amazon rainforest is more than half the size of China. The Amazon River, from which the rainforest gets its name, is about 6,400 kilometres in length. On its journey from the mountains to the ocean the river supports many different ecosystems. 1.

Of the 390,000 plant species known to man, more than 40,000 can be found in the Amazon. The forest's different levels support an unbelievable variety of wildlife. At the bottom, there is a system of roots beneath the ground. Above that is the mass of leaf litter on the dark forest floor. 2. Then there are the towering ancient hardwoods, and finally the tops of the tallest trees many metres above the ground. Each level of the forest forms its own little world, home to different kinds of living things.

More than 1,300 species of birds and over 400 species of mammals hide among the jungle's plant life. This jaguar is one example. It has yellowish-brown coat with black spots. While a significant number of jaguars survive here, they are only one element of this forest's food chain. 3. These frogs, in turn, feed on insects which eat leaves and fruit. When a jaguar dies, a tiny army of microorganisms helps break down its body and return the nutrients to the earth.

The Amazon rainforest breathes life into the planet by fixing carbon and producing over 20 percent of all the Earth's oxygen. 4. Moreover, the Amazon rainforest is a treasure house of species that can be used for food or medicine. Yet there is one major danger to these irreplaceable plants and animals: us.

5. As the impact of human activities such as agriculture and cattle farming continues to grow and the list of species in danger of extinction becomes longer, we are left with a question: can we afford to damage the "lungs of the planet"?

A. They feed on at least 87 species, including frogs.

B. Thus, it is often known as the "lungs of the planet".

C. Rivers tend to be the easiest way to enter the forest.

D. The next level is made up of shorter plants with large leaves.

E. They give this area the richest species of plants and animals on the Earth.

F. Currently the trees in the Amazon take in around 500 million tonnes of CO2 each year.

G. Over the past 50 years, 17 percent of the rainforest has disappeared due to human activities.

Strangers Under the Same Roof

Does every dinner with your parents seem to turn into an argument? Have your once warm and open conversations become cold and guarded? Do you feel that you just cannot see eye to eye with them on anything? You are not alone. Heated arguments and cold silences are common between teenagers and their parents.

Teenagers' physical changes may result in such family tensions. You may feel anxious that you are developing at a different rate to your friends, shooting up in height or getting left far behind. You might worry about your changing voice, weight problems or spots(粉刺).When it all gets too much, your parents are often the first targets of your anger.

It can be a big headache to balance your developing mental needs too. You enter a strange middle ground --- no longer a small child but not quite an adult. You have both a new desire for independence and a continued need for your parents' love and support. You feel ready to be more responsible and make decisions on your own. Unfortunately, your parents do not always agree and that makes you feel unhappy. "Why can't they just let me go?" you may wonder. On the other hand, when you are struggling to control your feelings, you wish they could be more caring and patient---sometimes they forget that growing up is a rough ride. It can be difficult when your parents treat you like a child but expect you to act like an adult. All of this can lead to a breakdown in your relationship.

Although sometimes it may seem impossible to get along as a family, you can take action to improve the situation. The key to keeping the peace is regular and honest communication. When you disagree with your parentstake a minute to calm down and try to understand the situation from their point of view. Perhaps they have experienced something similar and do not want you to go through the same pain. After you have thought it through, explain your actions and feelings calmly, listen carefullyand address their concerns. Through this kind of healthy discussion, you will lean when to back down and when to ask your parents to relax their control.

Just remember that it is completely a common thing to struggle with the stress that parent child tensions create, and that you and your parents can work together to improve your relationship. The good news is that this stormy period will not last. Everything will turn out all right in the end, and the changes and challenges of your teenage years will prepare you for adulthood.

1.The first paragraph is mainly introducing ___________.

A.the importance of close family relationships

B.the quarrels between teenagers and their parents

C.the wall of trust between parents and their teenagers

D.the common conversations between parents and children

2.What mainly causes the teenagers family tensions according to the author?

A.Their parents' attitude towards them.

B.Parents' strict control over their teenagers.

C.Parents' expectation on their children's development.

D.Teenagers' physical changes and their mental needs.

3.What would the author agree according to the passage?

A.Parents should let go of the control over their teenagers.

B.Teenagers should always follow their parents' points of view.

C.Parents and teenagers should always keep open conversations.

D.Teenagers should not depend on their parents' love and support.

4.The author thinks the stress that family tensions cause is ___________.

A.normal B.terrible

C.avoidable D.natural

Emperor Penguins

Emperor penguins are considered the most beautiful and the largest of all penguins. They are amazing birds. They are good survivors, excellent swimmers and great parents. Do you know where we can see them?

You are absolutely right! Antarctica. Only Antarctica!

Antarctica is the continent which is the most southern area of land on the Earth and is mostly covered with ice. It is colder, drier and windier than any other place on the Earth. The lowest temperature can reach -89.2. In order to survive the extremely tough environment, emperor penguins have to cooperate. They crowd together to protect themselves from the wind and keep warm. Meanwhile, they take turns to move to the relatively warm inside.

Emperor penguins live on a diet which consists of different types of fish and other kinds of sea life. To find food, these birds, which are unable to fly, can dive much deeper than any other kind of penguin. Their dives often reach about 244 metres, and they can even dive to more than 535 metres when necessary. They can remain under water for almost 18 minutes, longer than any other kind of penguin.

Emperor penguins have a very hard time bringing up their babies. They have to go to great lengths to care for their children. After laying an egg, the tired female emperor penguin will leave the family behind to feed at sea, while the male is left to take care of the egg. For two months, the father, whose duty is to keep the egg safe and warm, carries his egg around on his feet and will give up eating until the mother returns. He does not sit on the egg like many other birds, but stands and balances it on his feet. Thus he is at the mercy of the Antarctic weather. When the mother returns from the sea, sometimes up to 60-80 kilometres away, she throws up some of the food for the chick and takes the male's place to look after it. The father then takes his turn to feed at sea. Cooperative parenting at its finest.

By December, during the Antarctic summer, when the ice begins to break up and open water appears, the young emperor penguins are now ready to be excellent survivors, good swimmers and great parents on their own. What an amazing cycle it is!

1.The underlined word "cooperate" in the third paragraph means ___________.

A.work together B.fight against cold

C.protect themselves D.move to warm places

2.Emperor penguins ___________.

A.feed on only certain types of fish

B.live in the most terrible weather conditions

C.are amazing birds that can both fly and swim

D.stay in water 18 minutes longer than other penguins

3.From the passage, we know that emperor penguins are ___________.

A.great parents who sit on eggs to keep them warm

B.the most beautiful and the largest birds in the world

C.good survivors and they move to warm places in winter

D.excellent swimmers and they can dive deeper than other penguins

4.We can learn from the passage that ___________.

A.the chicks break up the eggshells in summer

B.an Emperor Penguin lays several eggs at a time

C.the male Emperor Penguins hatch the eggs in winter

D.the chicks are ready to live on their own one year later

Wang Daheng, Father of Chinese Optical Engineering

In 1949, the field of applied optical(光学)science didn't exist in China. Understanding its importance for national strength, the Chinese government paid much attention to optical research.

Wang Daheng, a respected optical physicist, devoted his whole life to this cause. He kept watching on the development of China's first optical glass, first electronic microscope, first laser device, and first large-size optical measuring equipment, and helped to found the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He was called the father of Chinese optical engineering.

As a teenager, Wang Daheng often followed his father to the observatory and became greatly interested in the apparatus(仪器)there. In 1936, he graduated from Tsinghua University with a degree in physics. Two years later, he won a government scholarship to study in England. After earning his master's degree from Imperial College London in 1940, he began his doctoral studies in optical physics and technology.

In 1948, Wang gave up his established career and comfortable life in the West and returned to his motherland with the aim of empowering it(增强它的自主权)through science and technology. At the time China did not have the capability to produce optical measuring equipment on its own. In 1951, Wang was instructed to found an institute of fine mechanics and was appointed its first president. Within less than two years, Wang and his team produced the first group of China-made optical glass. Over the following six years, they went on to develop the country's first electronic microscope, first high-precision theodolite(经纬仪), first optical range finder, and five other optical devices, laying the foundation for China's precision optical instrument industry. In 1961, they independently developed the ruby laser in China. In addition to scientific research, Wang advanced the study of optics in higher education.

Starting in the 1960s, Wang participated in optical research related to the development of nuclear bombs, missiles, and man-made satellites. In 1970, China successfully launched the Dongfanghong I satellite, of which Wang was one of the designers. When the satellite returned to Earth, the devices they designed brought back clear images of our home planet as seen from the outer space for the first time.

To close the technological gap between China and developed countries, Wang and three other scientists made the suggestion of drawing up a state hi-tech development plan in 1986, which led to the famous 863 Program.

In 1992, Wang and a group of other scientists called for the creation of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. In the following years, he won many honors from the state. He passed away in Beijing aged 96 on July 21, 2011 after living a full and fruitful life.

When my father was celebrating a milestone (里程碑) birthday, I pulled together a surprised gift that he would never forget.

On his 60th birthday ,I had a fun idea: What if I could get the memories people had of him, put each one into an envelope (信封) - 60 in total - and have him open them, one by one, on his birthday? So I wrote an e-mail to family and friends, explaining my idea.

I sent the e-mail and waited. And then the replies started coming in and I was very, very astonished. There were so many memories, and they were all so lovely. They came from the 50s, 60s, 70s, from every decade(十年)between now and the day my dad was born. They came from my mother, my siblings, my grandma, my dad's friends from high school, his sister, my dad's first boss, a colleague at his first job, from people who hadn't seen my dad in 40 years, from people I myself hadn't even informed. They typed them and handwrote them. They mailed them and e-mailed them.

The night before Dad's birthday, my sister and I stayed up late, putting the mails into envelopes.

The next morning, after breakfast and presents and cake, we gave the pile of envelopes to him. "Just one more thing for you," we said.

It took him a long time to open them and read. Each one was a brief ticket to another time, a leap (跳跃) backward over years and decades. There was a lot of laughter and a few tears in his face .

I was kind of sad when the project of the memories about my father was over because it was great fun to collect these memories.
