When life tries to bring you down, just dance! That’s the message from Peng Xiaoying, 45, and her 49-year-old husband, Fan Deduo, in Zhejiang province. The couple-farmers who grow corn in Ruian, Wenzhou - recently went viral on the Internet with a shuffle dance(鬼步舞) they invented. They’ve cheered up millions of Chinese with smiling faces and easygoing attitude to life. The couple turned to dancing about four years ago. Fan was in low spirits after a serious traffic accident in Yunnan province 18 years ago. He became nervous, easily upset by small matters, and had trouble sleeping at night due to the accident. The couple then decided to end their shoe-selling business in Yunnan and returned to their hometown, Ruian.

To help overcome his sadness, Peng, who was a big fan of dancing in public squares, invited Fan to join her. As he danced, his suffering disappeared like magic. The couple then continued square dancing. That’s where they invented the shuffle, mixing some elements(元素) of rural life such as combing hair.

During the novel coronavirus epidemic(新冠病毒流行病), the couple uploaded their dance videos to Douyin, also known as TikTok, and began live-streaming on the sharing platform. Their big smiles and unique dance steps took cyberspace by storm, with more than 1.6 million netizens now subscribing to(订阅) their channel and following their dancing on the platform.

“Look at them! I think that’s really what dancing is about-not showing off but really bringing happiness and joy to the dancers themselves in a simple way. This is the most beautiful dancing I’ve ever seen,” one netizen said.

I finished training as a nurse in Auckland and I was expecting to get a job in a small hospital somewhere. But then a friend told me about Volunteer Now. I’d always wanted to go to an African country and use my nursing skills to help people. And here was a chance to do that, so I decided to apply.  1. I got one hospital to sponsor me and then I borrowed some money from the bank.

So I went to Madagascar and joined a team of people working with a local supervisor (主管人). 2.

By going round villages, we taught basic ways to improve hygiene (卫生) and to avoid catching diseases. For example, we gave instruction about how to avoid catching malaria (疟疾) and distributed mosquito nets to some of the homes. I think we did some good. I hope so anyway.

3. I was suddenly in a completely different culture, teaching people who had such a different lifestyle from my own. It made a big difference to the way I see the world. And I also made some very good friends out there, both local people and the other volunteers.  4.

After I came back, I got accepted straight away for a job at the university hospital. 5.I’m sure I wouldn’t have managed to do that if I hadn’t worked in Madagascar and got this practical experience.

A.We set up a program there.

B.I also got a lot from this program.

C.It is one of the best hospitals in Auckland.

D.So I’d recommend Volunteer Now to anyone.

E.I failed to take the opportunity though I could.

F.I had to raise $500 before I went, but that was quite easy.

G.We had such good times together and we’ve kept in touch since then.

Most scientists are now certain that global warming is taking place. Gases such as carbon dioxide are creating a warm blanket around the earth. This blanket is trapping heat in the atmosphere, and so raising the temperature of the earth.

In Europe, eight of the last ten years have seen record high temperatures. On the other hand, the countries around the Mediterranean Sea are receiving even less rain than before. In Sub- Saharan Africa the crops are drying out in the fields and people are dying of starvation. In 1999, the southern United States was struck by a serious of destructive(毁灭性的) hurricanes. Scientists expect such trends to continue, and to worsen, if global warming cannot be stopped.

In addition to worrying about rising global temperatures and extreme weather conditions, scientists are closely monitoring sea levels around the world. They are slowly rising, as the northern and southern polar ice caps start to melt. This will have serious consequences for low-lying countries near the sea. Already parts of these places are disappearing under the rising sea water.

According to a new research, one contradictory feature(特征) of global warming is that it will probably lead to a period of much colder weather. Scientists base their theory on what happened the last time the world warmed up, 8,300 years ago. They have discovered that when the ice melted from the northern polar ice cap it became trapped in a lake in northern Canada. As more ice melted, this lake suddenly burst open, pouring millions of tons of freezing fresh water into the North Atlantic. This flood of water prevented the normal flow of water in the Atlantic, which takes warm water from the tropics(热带地区) north to Europe. When this flow of warm water was cut off, temperatures in Europe dropped by between three and eight degrees over the next 200 years. ''That's the concern here,'' says Richard Alley, an American climate expert. ''The climate hasn't varied much in 8, 000 years. But big changes could come back!''

1.What is the overall effect of global warming on Europe?

A.A warmer climate. B.A decline in rainfall.

C.An increase of hurricanes. D.A decrease of crop production.

2.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.The rising sea level. B.The melting of icebergs.

C.The increase in disasters. D.The cause of global warming.

3.How does the author describe the climate change in Europe 8 ,300 years ago?

A.By offering statistics. B.By giving an example.

C.By making comparisons. D.By analyzing the process.

4.What can we infer from Richard Alley' s words?

A.Global climate change will bring more disasters.

B.Global warming will likely produce a colder climate.

C.Global warming will continue for the next two centuries.

D.Global climate will remain unchangeable in the next 8,000 years.

Some people think that as more and more people have televisions in their homes, fewer and fewer people will buy books and newspapers. Why read an article in the newspaper, when the TV news can bring you the information in a few minutes and with pictures? Why read the life story of a famous man, when a short television program can tell you all that you want to know?

Television has not killed reading, however. Today, newspapers sell in very large numbers. And books of every kind are sold more than ever before. Books are still a cheap way to get information and enjoyment. Although some books with hard covers are expensive, many books are printed today as paperbacks (平装本), which are quite cheap. A paperback collection of short stories, for example, is always cheaper than an evening at the cinema or the theater, and you can keep a book for ever and read it many times.

Books are a wonderful provider of knowledge and pleasure and some types of books should be in every home. Every home should have a good dictionary. A good encyclopedia (百科全书), though expensive, is useful, too, because you can find information on any subject. Besides, you can have such books as history books., science textbook, cookbooks, and collections of stories and poems. Then from time to time you can take a book of poems off your shelves and read the thoughts and feelings of your favorite poets.

1.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

A.TV programs are a chief provider of knowledge

B.cinemas are the best choice in getting information

C.reading is a cheap way of learning and having fun

D.newspapers are an expensive way to enjoy oneself

2.What does the sentences “Television has not killed reading, however ” underlined in the second paragraph suggest?

A.People only need reading, though. B.Reading is still necessary today.

C.Reading is more fun than television. D.Watching television doesn’t help reading.

3.What can we learn from the passage?

A.Fewer and fewer people will buy books.

B.A good dictionary should be kept in every home.

C.Books with hard covers sell better than paperbooks.

D.More people like TV programs about famous men.

Hannah McKeand was born in Bristol in 1973. She got a degree in Classics at Lampeter University. After working as a marketing manager, she decided at the age of 31 to devote herself entirely to her primary passions (热情), exploring, adventure and the outdoors. She would take part in various expeditions (探险), in the Egyptian desert first, then in the remote valleys of northeast of Afghanistan, and then in Antarctica.

In 2001 her urge to explore began to develop with a trip to the Western Desert on the borders of Egypt, Libya and Sudan in search of prehistoric rock art. This trip took Hannah to the center of the second biggest wilderness on the planet, an uninhabited (无人居住的) area the size of India.

Crossing one of the harshest (最严酷的) environments in the world, the team of five battled with physical and mental exhaustion, injury, hunger and some of the lowest temperatures on earth.

In 2006 Hannah returned to Antarctica and once again skied from Hercules Inlet to the South Pole, but this time alone and unsupported. She set a new world record for the journey of 39 days 9 hours and 33 minutes.

In October 2007 Hannah began her first full adventure season traveling from Australia across to Chile and from there around Cape Horn and down to Antarctica.

Li Daiyu and her cousin Liu Qian were on a trip to Canada to visit their cousins on the Atlantic coast. Rather than to take the airplane all the way, they could fly to Vancouver and then take the train from west to east across Canada. The thought which they could cross the whole continent was exciting. Canada is the second large country in the world. One of the most popular cities is Vancouver on which many people live. The coast north of Vancouver has some of the oldest and most beautiful forest in the world. It is so wet there that the trees are extreme tall. Looked out of the train window, they saw mountain goats, which were being protected, and even a grizzly bear and an eagle. Walk Out of the Comfort Zone and Try New Things

For most high school students, free periods (课,节) are useless. From what I have seen, few do homework. 1.. This makes it impossible for those who actually want to do work to complete any. As a senior next year, I think extra periods should be used to take optional subjects.

2.. Now is the time for us students to choose a suitable one. We will experiment in different fields of study. We will never know if we are interested or talented in a subject if we don’t try it.

In my 8th grade, I was told that I had to take an art class as a graduation requirement; so in the 9th grade I took Studio and Art. One of the projects was to build a clay pot, but I built mine incorrectly, so it broke in the kiln (). 3.. Now I know for sure that I do not want to be an artist. However, the class was one of my favorites that year. I was able to try new activities and test my ability.

4.! College is when we should focus on a specific major, but high school is when we have to figure it out.

Half of all college students change their major at some point. By doing that hundreds of dollars are wasted on classes that they would have never needed to take. So use our extra periods to find out what we want to do in college. 5..

A.Our school offers many classes

B.We should find out what we are good at

C.I’ve avoided anything related to art since then

D.Instead, many are on their phones and talking

E.I found out that I have no artistic ability at all

F.Walk out of our comfort zone and try new things

G.The classes we choose can influence us in the future

Many children love using a trampoline(蹦床)for fun. They love the excitement the activity brings to them. But are trampolines safe to use?

Starting in the early 1990s, trampolines saw a major increase in popularity. In 1989, 140,000 trampolines were sold in the United States and by 1998 that number had increased to 640,000. But with the increase in popularity there was a rise in pain. From 1990 to 1995, trampolines-related injuries jumped by 98% and in 1999 over 100,000 kids were treated in the emergency room because of using trampolines.

The data behind the danger is clear, but parents may not know that even though trampolines are made for children, they are not suitable for kids under the age of six. Kait Ellen posted an article on Facebook about her visit to a trampoline gym with her son Colton. Actually the visit was anything but enjoyable for the little guy. Colton, who was three years old, broke his bone while jumping up and down on a trampoline. And in her article there was a warning from a government department, which advised that children under the age of six should never use a trampoline.

In 2004, the first indoor trampoline park opened Thursday in LasVegas, Nevada and parks have been growing rapidly ever since. Parents should keep in mind the advice of experts for keeping their kids safe. To keep your kids from getting injured while using trampolines, you’d better keep them away from them.

I grew up in New Jersey and didn’t spend a night outdoors until I turned 30, when I decided I should know how to set up a tent. I attended a month-long course in the Absaroka Mountains in Wyoming and learned to be comfortable without a roof over my head. Ever since, I’ve tried to go camping once a year, to keep up my skills.

I’d been telling my son about the joys of the great outdoors, and he was eager to join me. And I was eager for him to experience at a young age what it had taken me so long to discover. Yet I was also worried. It seemed that every time I went camping, I forgot something---like a frying pan or my knife. I could get by with these mistakes when I was on my own. But with my son along, it was a different story.

So, with our supplies checked again and again, we piled into the car and headed north. After 20 minutes, my son turned and asked, "How much farther, Dad? "I’d worried that five miles might be too much for him, but the lake had seemed the perfect destination. I began to tell stories. But after a steep grade, he quit. Then I reached for my bag of M&M’s---the normally forbidden treat meant to be saved until our work was done.

Three dozen candy-coated chocolate later, we found the lake. We were excited. I showed him how to set up the tent. As darkness fell, my son laughed himself to sleep. In the morning, the stove wouldn’t light. My son had sardines and M&M’s for breakfast and pronounced it the best meal he had ever eaten. After a few hours, we went back home.

The following year, we got rained out, and the year after that, time got away from us. But next weekend, we’re heading out for another overnight. A bag of M&M’s is already in my pack.

Mr. Dawson was always complaining about everything, and everyone in town knew it. Kids knew not to go into his yard to pick a delicious apple, even off the ground, because old Dawson, they said, would come after you with his ball bullet gun.

One Friday, 12-year-old Janet was going to stay all night with her friend Amy. They had to walk by Dawson’s house on the way to Amy’s house, but as they got close Janet saw him sitting on his front porch and suggested they cross over to the other side of the street. Like most of the children, she was scared of the old man because of the story she’d heard about him.

Amy said not to worry, Mr. Dawson wouldn't hurt anyone. Still, Janet was growing more nervous with each step closer to the old man’s house. When they got close enough, Dawson looked up with his usual frown, but when he saw it was Amy, a broad smile changed his entire face as he said, “Hello Miss Amy. I see you’ve got a little friend with you today.”

Amy smiled back and told him Janet was staying overnight and they were going to listen to. music and play games. Dawson told them that sounded fun, and offered them each a fresh picked apple off his tree. They gladly accepted. Dawson had the best apples in town.

When they got out of Dawson on earshot, Janet asked Amy, ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________.

If we remember what Amy’s grandma said, that everyone wears an invisible smile, we too will find that most people can’t resist our smile after a while.
