I suddenly ________that life is full of ups and downs, so I need to stay________all the time. Now when I think of my past, I wish I could have handled things ________.     Did you take part in a camp this summer ? 1. To choose which camp is best  for you, first you must do a bit of research.

Maybe you've never thought about it before, but every great summer camp has the same  main goals — opportunity, challenge and growth.

Opportunity means you are given a chance to do something special. 2. For  example, if you are interested in writing, then you can choose to join a journalism camp. You may even have the opportunity to meet famous journalists there.

3. You    must    finish    the    task    and succeed in overcoming the challenge. Then   you will have a sense of accomplishment. For example, you could take a lifeguard course at some summer camps. If you pass the exam, then you will receive a certificate (证书)to become a real lifeguard.

This also leads to the third and most important goal of every great summer camp personal growth. It doesn’t mean growing taller and stronger or more beautiful. It means seeing yourself improve, learning something new and doing something you didn’t know you could do before. 4..

So in the future, when choosing your next summer camp, remember to ask yourself: Is it a special opportunity? Is it a challenge? Will I grow?

5. These will all happen naturally when you have the right goals at summer  camp.

A.Challenge means you are given a task.

B.It also means becoming more confident in yourself.

C.Some camps focus on developing a certain skill or ability.

D.But what about friendship, fun and joy?

E.There are so many summer camps and not all of them are the same.

F.Of course, summer camps aren't all about adventure or study.

G.It also makes you special because other kids don't have the same opportunity.

Did you know that the color of uniforms can influence the performance of an athlete? It may sound strange, but a study suggests this might be true.

Two British scientists studied the results of four sports in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games where the athletes had been given either a red or a blue uniform. They discovered that when there was a big difference in the score, color had no influence on the result. But if it was a close match, the athlete in a red uniform was more likely to win. Then they looked at the uniforms of the soccer teams at the Euro 2004 tournament. Again, teams wearing red won more games.

The two scientists got their idea from earlier studies of wild animals. It had been discovered that when a male show red on its body, it sends a signal of its power and strength. For example, in many kinds of monkey, the more the male shows off its red scare, the more females it can attract

Based on this fact, the British scientists thought that the idea might work for humans, too. According to them, when an athlete sees a competitor in a red uniform, he gets a feeling that his competitor could be stronger than him. And that kind of feeling may have a bad influence on the player’s performance in the actual game.

Although the idea is Interesting, most people don’t accept that color signals in the animals world can really be useful to humans in sports. They think that it is unreasonable to develop an Idea based on such a small number of examples. Much more research has to be done to prove the influence of uniform colors on the performance of athletes.

1.What did the scientists find out about the 2004 Athens Olympic Games?

A.Athletes played equally well in four sports.

B.Game results had a big influence on the athletes.

C.Athletes dressed in red scored more in a close match.

D.There was a big difference in read and blue team’s scores.

2.What may the red scars of a male animal suggest?

A.It is quite strong. B.It is a failure.

C.It has power over other males. D.It has attracted a lot of females.

3.The underlined part “that kind of feeling” in the text refers to a feeling of       .

A.weakness B.pride

C.danger D.shame

4.what is most people’s opinion to the scientists’ idea?

A.Interested B.Satisfied.

C.Doubtful. D.Thankful

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while—then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.

Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily, but truly can’t manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.

Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes,

For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for pure business matters. So accept their hospitality at home !

1.Where are we expected to call our American friends if we go there by plane?

A.On the bus. B.At the airport.

C.Near their home. D.At our own hotel.

2.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives.

B.Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy.

C.Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.

D.Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.

3.Which is the typical way of American hospitality?

A.Treating friends at home. B.Sharing everything they have.

C.Taking days off to be with friends. D.Meeting friends at the airport at midnight.

4.In which part of a newspaper can this article be found?

A.Culture. B.News.

In the far corner of the front yard of a large house in Florida rests an RV—Recreational Vehicle( 活动房屋式旅游车), shaded by trees as clothing on a nearby line sways(摇动) in the breeze. In this RV, National Geographic explorer Thomas Culhane lives with his wife, Enas, almost entirely off the grid—a lifestyle without depending on electricity supply.

Culhane began living off the grid in the late 1990s, when he went into the basement of his apartment building in Los Angeles and pulled the plug that delivered electricity. Even earlier though, he was first inspired by sustainable(不破坏生态平衡的) living during a trip in 1970 to visit his relatives. He was eight years old and worried that his stay in their small village was going to be miserable because his relatives told him they had no air conditioning or electricity— but they had plenty of fresh fruits from orchards (果园) and lots of cold drinks chilled by the icy stream from the ice caps of the nearby mountain. “This is amazing,”says Culhane.

He met Enas when she was living in an ecovillage in Portugal. Enas said she liked the feeling of being low impact, of being harmless to the earth. Culhane was attracted and fell in love with her. The couple got married, living on the same property(财产) that they currently have. They moved into their first home together—an RV which they immediately took completely off-grid.

Inside their RV, Culhane and Enas have hot showers, a working gas stove, a refrigerator, a washing machine and a big screen TV. They use gas created by their on-site biodigesters (生物煮解器) to cook on a gas-powered stove. They also use energy created by the biodigesters to heat their bath water. They feed the biodigesters using their own food waste— at no additional cost to the earth.

Sometimes on weekends, the RV is turned into a classroom. The couple host workshops to let the community members and students know living an off-grid life is getting easier and teach them how to respect and coexist peacefully with the environment.

A.Her marriage property. B.Their common life belief.

C.The beauty of her ecovillage. D.Her experience of exploration.

How to Deal with Pressures at School

As a high school student, if you are feeling stressed out or frustrated by teachers, classmates,or schoolworkit is important to know that you aren't the only one Believe it or noteveryone has these feelings at some point and everyone should learn how to deal with them properly

First of all you need to keep a positive attitude and not take things to heart That someone got a better grade than you doesn't mean that they are smarterperhaps they studied longer or knew the material more It's easy to become frustrated if you are not doing as well as your friends but being optimistic will help you deal with future similar situations

Secondly if students at school are bullying you know when to stand up for yourself Don't let other classmates make you feel that you are not good enough They are simply insecure and do not know how to deal with the pressures of school They are just trying to make others feel bad so they can feel better about themselves

Lastly it is necessary to keep things correctly For any situation that is stressful take a second look from a different point of view When I look back to the frustrations of my high school days I notice that many of them seem very unimportant to me now

It's not easy to be confident when there are so many students who seem like they "have it all"but try to realize that you, too, are good enough. It’s not a competition about who is smarter, more beautiful—everyone is different—so believe your individuality.

There are five keys to success in learning a foreign language.

Spend the time.

By far the most important factor is how much time you are immersed(浸入) in the language.

1.This means spending time enjoyably connected to the language you are learning.

Listen and read every day.

Listen wherever you are on your MP3 player.2. Listen to and read things that you like, things that you can mostly understand, or even partly understand. If you keep listening and reading you will get used to the language. One hour of listening or reading is more effective than many hours of class time.

3.

Build up your vocabulary, you’ll need lots. Start to notice words and how they come together as phrases. Learn these words and phrases through your listening and reading. Gradually you will be able to use them. Do not worry about how accurately you speak until you have accumulated plenty of words through listening and reading.

Take responsibility for your own learning.

If you do not want to learn the language, you won’t. 4.Do not wait for someone else to show you the language, nor to tell you what to do. Discover the language by yourself, like a child growing up.

5.

Do not worry about what you cannot remember, or can’t yet understand. It does not matter. You are learning and improving. The language will gradually become clearer in your brain, but this will happen on a schedule that you can’t control. So just make sure you spend enough time with the language. That is the greatest guarantee of success.

A.Relax and make sure of the time spent with the language.

B.Focus on words and phrases.

C.Read what you are listening to.

D.Chat with others in the language on the Internet.

E.If you do want to learn the language, take control.

F.The more time you spend with the language, the faster you will learn.

G.There are hundreds of easy conversations for you to practice speaking.

People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions — and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.

Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly(均匀的) across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.

“We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect (忽略) the mouth.”

According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.

The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.

It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than did Westerners. “The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said. “Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.”

In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.

1.The discovery shows that Westerners _____________.

A.pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth

B.consider facial expressions universally reliable

C.observe the eyes and the mouth in different ways

D.have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions

2.What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 6 refer to?

A.The participants in the study. B.The researchers of the study.

C.The errors made during the study. D.The data collected from the study.

3.What can be the best title for the passage?

A.The Eye as the Window to the Soul

B.Cultural Differences in Reading Emotions

C.Effective Methods to Develop Social Skills

D.How to increase Cross-cultural Understanding

Are your children liked by their teachers? All parents want their children to impress their teachers and succeed in school. You can get your children to impress their teachers by following these easy steps.

Make sure they’re prepared. Teachers are impressed by children coming to school prepared to learn. Make sure they have everything they need—pencils, textbooks, erasers and so on.

Require them to be active in class. Teach them to ask teachers questions when they don’t understand something, some children think teachers are bothered by questions, but most teachers are impressed when children take the initiative(采取主动) in asking questions. They should take part in class discussions, giving their opinions politely.

Keep your children healthy. If your children are tired and hungry, they won’t be ready to learn. Children need at least 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night. Feed your children a solid breakfast and prepare a healthy lunch. Provide them with fruit and other healthy foods—apples or bananas are better for them than cookies.

Make sure that your children do their homework. If they really don’t understand it , discuss it with them patiently. Don’t help them do their homework. Teachers can always tell who it is that does the work.

Teach your children good manners and habits. Children need to arrive at the school punctually, and be polite to their teachers and classmates. Parents need to teach these skills at home. Nothing is sweeter than children who say”please” and “thank you”, and these are children their teachers are certain to love.

Last July, my parents and I went to visit my aunt and uncle in Seattle, a city on the northwest American coast. Dad did some research and had no difficulty in finding us cheap tickets online.

On the day of our flight, we had to wake up very early. When we checked our bags in, we found that one bag weighed too much, so we had to pay a fine. After that, dad insisted that we go and have some breakfast at the airport restaurant. We had a lot of fun watching many different people there. Then we realized it was getting late, so we rushed to the gate. It took one hour for everyone to get on the plane, but finally the door was shut and we were on our way!

I think my favorite experience during our trip was our visit to Mount Rainier, a volcano near Seattle. It was nothing like I had expected. Before we left, my aunt lent us hats to protect us from getting sunburned, so I supposed that it would be very hot. Imagine my surprise when we drove up the mountain and I discovered the top was covered with snow and ice.!

My uncle led us to a small path beyond the main trails to increase our chances of seeing wildlife. We walked over a small hill, and suddenly before us there appeared a field of snow. Small wild flowers grew up through the snow; underneath the snow we could hear rushing water—a small stream. Little animals stood still to avoid being noticed; tiny birds rose into the air. It was the most beautiful sight that I’d ever seen.

1.What ticket did the father buy for the family?

A.Bus B.Ship

C.Train D.Airplane

2.Why did they pay a fine?

A.Because they got up late. B.Because they didn’t wait in line.

C.Because they came to the airport late. D.Because their bag was overweight.

3.What was the writer’s most impressive experience?

A.The flight to Seattle B.The breakfast in the airport

C.The visit to Mount Rainier D.The discovery of a small stream

4.Why did they choose a small path instead of the main trails?

Many people think a telephone is a necessity (必需品). But I think it is a pest (有害的事物) and a time waste. Very often you find it impossible to escape from it. If you have a telephone in your own house, you will admit that it always rings when you don’t want it to ring; when you are asleep, or in the middle of a meal or a conversation, or when you are just going out, or when you are taking your bath. Are you strong-minded enough to ignore it, to say to yourself, “Ah, well, it will all be the same in a hundred years’ time” You are not. You think there may be some important news or messages for you. I can assure you that if a message is really important it will reach you sooner or later. Have you ever rushedfrom the bathroom, only to be told that you are a wrong number?

But you will say, you need not have your name printed in the telephone directory, and you can have a telephone which is only usable for outgoing calls. Besides, you will say, isn’t it important to have a telephone in case of sudden emergency—illness, accident, or fire? Of course, you are right, but here in a country with a large population like England one is seldom far from a telephone in case of emergency.

I think perhaps I had better try to prove that what I like is good. I admit that in different cases—if I were a wealthy and powerful business person, for instance, or badly ill and had to lie in bed, I might find a telephone a necessity. But then if I were a taxi-driver I should find a car necessity. Let me put it another way: there are two things for which the English seem to show particular talent; one is mechanical (机器的) invention, the other is literature. My own business happens to be with the use of words but I see I must now stop using them. For I have just been handed a piece of paper to say that somebody is waiting to speak to me on the telephone. I think I had better answer it. After all, one never knows, it may be something important.

The word for milk in German is "Milch", In french it is "lait". Usually, you don't find the same words in every language. But there is an exception for the word OK! The word OK is the most frequently(频繁地) spoken expression in the world, and it turned 175 years old on March 23, New York Daily News reported. “OK” was first introduced to the world in the Boston Morning Post on March 23, 1839. It read : o.k. —oll correct (all correct). Although it was only a joke at that time, later people began marking OK on documents and using OK on the telegraph (电报) to say that all was well. Today, we use this expression every day. “How about 2 o’ clock? OK?” “OK.” “OK, then.” The word OK is easy to say and write, and clear enough to be understood. Besides, it offers neutrality (中性) that other words don’t have. If you say something is great, some people may say it isn’t. But with “OK” everyone generally agrees.

Are these any other words that can cross countries and cultures? “Huh” is another universal word. Researchers found that “huh” means surprise or disbelief in 10 different languages, Los Angeles Times reported. Sometimes, people need a word to express many meanings at once. For example, sometimes there is a problem of understanding, or you want to ask somebody for response(反应). Saying “huh” is short and easy to say and hear. Also, you don’t need to learn this word, just like you don’t need to learn to cry or laugh. “Huh” just comes out naturally.

Other widely used words include “mama”, which is considered to be the easiest word for babies to pronounce. Don’t forget “game over”. It is not only used by game fans but also a hot word to describe the end of an event in real life.

Cervantes was born to poor parents. His future looked dark as he grew to see a life of sadness and poverty before him. He joined the army as a common soldier and was hurt so badly that he could not use his left arm.

He later failed to find a job and, on two occasions, was sent to prison. He continued to have brushes with the law and struggled just to survive.

But, despite these troubles of his life, he never let go of his dream - to write a book. He realized his dream and he wrote a book. In the book he told of a beautiful story which came from his heart’s deepest dreams. It is about a man who saw the world differently than everyone else. Though created in suffering, the book is an inspiring (鼓舞人的) story of hope. This man’s story has been put to music and film, translated into many languages and remains a literary classic after some 400 years. It has moved many people in the world. The author was Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra and the book is Don Quijote de la Mancha (《唐吉可德》). Perhaps Cervantes himself believed that “the world sees people as they are - I see them as they can be! Cervantes may never have written such a wonderful work if he had not seen some potential(潜能) within himself. He knew, and has taught others ever since, that great truth: What we see will come to be. Some see situations as they are, others as they can be.

Some see people as they are, others as they can be. And some see themselves as they are, others as they can be. But when we set our sights upon the best that is within a situation or a human being, what we see will come to be. And we’ll know the power of hope.

Americans celebrate Valentine’s Day each year on February 14th. So do candy companies, jewelry stores and people selling flowers. Valentine’s Day is for lovers. It is a good day to ask your boyfriend or girlfriend to marry you. It is also a popular day for marriage. But other couples might celebrate with a dinner at a nice restaurant.
