Sometimes it can be hard to recognize a true friend, one who is loyal(忠诚的)and one who is worth keeping by your side. The suggestions provided in this article will help to guide you in working out which friends are likely to be true. Be able to trust your friends. You should be able to trust true friends and they should return this trust. Your friends tell you secrets that no one else knows. Let you share secrets. Ask you for advice.1. However, if your friends hide things from you and act secretive, this could be a sign that they do not trust you, but it could also mean your friends keep to themselves or don’t like to reveal too much about themselves. Consider comfort. How comfortable do your friends feel when they are around you? Watch them, are they being themselves or are they timid (胆怯的)around you? 2.True friendships can take a while to develop, but if your friends are true, they should feel comfortable around you. 3.This is not meant in a romantic way, but consider whether your friends are comfortable with the touch. If your friends are fine with hugging you, leaning on you, resting their heads on your shoulder and so forth, then you can judge they love you. Think about loyalty. True friends are always there for one another. If you are in need of a helping hand, your true friends should be there to offer it to you. 4.You can trust friends with anything, knowing that they will be loyal and will not let your secrets out. Look at how you fight. Nearly all best friends fight; so if you and your friend have a little dispute(争论), don't sweat it! 5.. They will not tell each other’s secrets and they still care about each other. A. Consider the touch barrier. B. Consider how you insult each other. C. They should know that you are not serious. D. These are sure signs that your friends trust you. E. Are they acting fake—perhaps hiding an insecurity? F. True friends should not get one another into trouble. G. True friends will remain faithful and find their way through a fight.
About a month after I joined Facebook, I got a call from Lori Goler, a highly regarded senior director of marketing at eBay. She made it clear this was a business call. “I want to apply to work with you at Facebook,” she said. “Instead of recommending myself, I want to ask you: What is your biggest problem, and how can I solve it?” My jaw hit the floor. I had hired thousands of people over the previous decade and no one had ever said anything remotely like that. People usually focus on finding the right role for themselves, with the implication that their skills will help the company. Lori put Facebook’s needs front and center. It was a killer approach. I responded, “Recruiting is my biggest problem. And, yes, you can solve it.” Lori never dreamed she would work in recruiting, but she jumped in. She even agreed to trade earnings for acquiring new skills in a new field. Lori did a great job running recruiting and within months was promoted to her current job, leading People@Facebook. The most common metaphor for careers is a ladder, but this concept no longer applies to most workers. As of 2010, the average American had eleven jobs from the ages of eighteen to forty-six alone. Lori often quotes Pattie Sellers, who came up with a much better metaphor: “Careers are a jungle gym, not a ladder.” As Lori describes it, there’s only one way to get to the top of a ladder, but there are many ways to get to the top of a jungle gym. The jungle gym model benefits everyone, but especially women who might be starting careers, switching careers, getting blocked by external barriers, or reentering the workforce after taking time off. The ability to create a unique path with occasional dips, detours (弯路), and even dead ends presents great views of many people, not just those at the top. On a ladder, most climbers are stuck staring at the butt of the person above. 1.Why did Lori make the call? A.She helped Facebook to solve the biggest problem. B.She wanted to make a business deal with Facebook. C.She tried to ask for a pay rise in Facebook. D.She wanted to become an employee in Facebook. 2.What impressed “I” by Lori? A.Lori was good at running recruiting. B.Lori attached great importance to Facebook’s needs. C.Lori jumped in Facebook with no adequate experience. D.Lori was skilled in marketing at eBay. 3.What can we infer from the passage? A.Now all people don’t tend to climb the ladder. B.None on the ladder can enjoy the great views. C.Jungle gyms offer limited exploration for employees. D.A pregnant woman, jobless, benefits little from the jungle gyms. 4.What is the best title of the passage? A.It’s a Jungle Gym, Not a Ladder. B.Facebook’s Biggest Problem. C.Applying for a Job in Facebook. D.A Jungle Gym is Better than a Ladder.
A new study says one part of the human brain may become smaller as the result of a condition known as jet lag which results from flying long distances in an airplane. People with jet lag feel extremely tired for several days. They may also have problems in thinking clearly and remembering. Recently a researcher at the University of Bristol in Britain reported the findings of his jet lag study, which involved twenty women who worked for international airlines. They had served passengers on airplanes for five years. These flight attendants flew across many countries and at least seven time zones. In the study, the flight attendants had different amounts of time to recover from jet lag. Half the women spent five days or fewer in their home areas between long flights. The other half spent more than fourteen days in their home areas. The researcher took some saliva from the women’s mouths to measure levels of a hormone (荷尔蒙) that increases during stress. He tested them to see if they could remember where black spots appeared on a computer screen. And he took pictures of their brains to measure the size of the brain’s temporal lobes (脑叶). It was found that the women who had less time between flights had smaller right temporal lobes. This area of the brain deals with recognizing and remembering what is seen. The same group performed worse and had slower reaction times on the visual memory test. And their saliva samples showed higher levels of stress hormones. The researcher believes the brain needs at least ten days to recover after a long trip. He says airline workers told him their ability to remember got worse after working on planes for about four years. Other studies have shown that increased feelings of stress can cause a loss of cells in the part of the brain that controls memory. Scientists say more tests are needed to study the effects of jet lag on the brain. They want to find out if too much jet lag could permanently affect memory. 1.What causes jet lag according to the passage? A.Having a long trip. B.Flying across many countries. C.Making lengthy flight journeys. D.Traveling across several time zones. 2.What are the second and third paragraphs about? A.The process of the study. B.The result of the study. C.The meaning of the study. D.The preparation of the study. 3.What did the researcher find about his jet lag study? A.The women who have longer flights fail the memory test. B.The women who have longer rest at home show better memory. C.The women who rest more than 14 days produce more hormones. D.The women who have less time in flight have smaller right temporal lobes. 4.What can be the best title for the text? A.Solution to Jet Lag B.Influences of Jet Lag on the Brain C.Jet Lag PermanentlyAffects Memory D.FlightAttendants’BrainsAre in Danger
I promised to myself on the way down to the vacation beach cottage. For two weeks I would try to be a loving husband and father. Totally loving. No ifs, ands or buts. The idea had occurred to me as I listened to a talk on my car radio. The speaker was reading a passage about husbands being thoughtful of their wives. Then he went on to say, “Love is an act of will. A person can choose to love.” To myself, I had to admit that I had been a selfish husband. Well, for two weeks that would change. And it did. Right from the moment I kissed Evelyn at the doctor and said, “That new yellow sweater looks good on you.” “Oh, Tom, you noticed,” she said, surprised and pleased. Maybe a little puzzled. After the long drive, I wanted to sit and read. Evelyn suggested a walk on the beach. I started to refuse, but then I changed my mind. We walked on the beach while the children flew their kites. So it went. Two weeks of not calling the Wall Street firm; a visit to the shell museum though I usually hate museums. Relaxed and happy, that’s how the whole vacation passed. There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment, however. On the last night at our cottage, Evelyn stared at me with the saddest expression. “What’s the matter?” I asked her. “Tom,” she said in a voice filled with distress, “do you know something I don’t?” “What do you mean?” “Well… that checkup I had several weeks ago… our doctor… did he tell you something about me? Tom, you’ve been so good to me… am I dying?” It took a moment for it all to sink in. Then I burst out laughing. “No, honey,” I said, wrapping her in my arms. “You’re not dying; I’m just starting to live.” 1.What do”No ifs, ands or buts”in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A.Unnecessarily. B.Unexpectedly. C.Impossibly. D.Unconditionally. 2.Why did Tom try to be a loving husband and father? A.Evelyn looked lovely in her sweater. B.Evelyn suffered a deadly disease. C.He regretted about his past behaviors. D.He had made lots of money in Wall Street. 3.What does the underlined sentence probably mean? A.Tom thought Evelyn’s words were funny. B.It took Tom a while to understand Evelyn’s words. C.Tom’s heart sank suddenly on hearing Evelyn’s words. D.Tom tried to prevent Evelyn knowing the truth about her illness. 4.What can we infer about Evelyn’s feeling towards her husband’s change? A.Relaxed and happy. B.Pleased and grateful. C.Pleased but sorrowful. D.Surprised but pleased.

In 1960,Douglas McGregor developed a leadership theory about organization and management in which he represented two opposing perceptions(看法)about people. He referred to these two perceptions as Theory X and Theory Y.Douglas then arrived at the conclusion that the style of leadership depends on the manager's perception of people. In Theory X,Douglas summarizes the traditional view of management in a number of characteristic assumptions in which authoritarian(专制的)leadership style, close supervision and the hierarchical principle are the key elements.Theory X starts from the assumption that people are naturally lazy, want to avoid work as much as possible, have no ambition and prefer to be supervised. The authoritarian leadership style is therefore the most appropriate leadership style. The system of rewards and punishments works best for employees. Douglas starts from the assumption in Theory Y that people have different needs.Theory Y assumes that people are inherently happy to work, they want to exert themselves and they are motivated to pursue objectives. There is no need for the system that involves rewards and punishments.People are prepared to take responsibility for everything they do.People want to use their creativity and they like to take a creative problem solving approach. The central principle of Theory Y is that of integration:individuals can achieve their own goals by also focusing their efforts on the objectives of the organization they work for. They want to get the most out of their work through satisfaction, appreciation and motivation.Theory Y therefore assumes that control, rewards and punishments are not the only ways to stimulate people. A democratic leadership style arises on the basis of Theory Y which allows the employees to have a greater say.Encouragement and rewards are used rather than control and supervision.Employees are given an opportunity to develop themselves and put their capabilities to good use. When an organization does not respond to this, employees will start looking for possibilities to explore their skills outside their work. 1.According to Douglas, what mainly determines a manager's working style? A.What he expects to achieve in work. B.What his own personality is. C.What he thinks employees are like. D.What he is in charge of in a company. 2.Which of the following statements is true according to Theory Y? A.Employees have the motivation to work and achieve. B.Rewards should never be involved in work place. C.Responsible people are always well prepared for work. D.Creativity will encourage employees to solve problems. 3.What is the biggest difference between the two theories? A.To control or encourage. B.To reward or punish. C.To suspect or respect. D.To instruct or follow. 4.What would be the best title for the text? A.Douglas,Thinker of Management B.How to Manage Your Employees C.Douglas' X Y Theory of Management D.The Roles of Managers and Employees
Athletes who can run several marathons in just months might seem unstoppable. The biggest obstacle,it turns out,is their own bodies.A new study find out for the first time a “ceiling” for endurance activities such as longdistance running and biking. “Physiologists and athletes alike have long been interested in just how far the human body can push itself. When exercising over a few hours,a wealth of evidence suggests most people max out at about five times their basal metabolic(代谢的)rate(BMR).How humans use energy during longer endurance activities is another question entirely,”says Herman Pontzer,an evolutionary theorist at Duke University,North Carolina. Pontzer saw an opportunity to answer that question when Bryce Carlson,an endurance athlete and former biochemist at Purdue University, organized the Race Across the USA in 2015.Runners covered 4,957 kilometers over the course of 20 weeks in a series of marathons stretching from Los Angeles,California,to Washington,D.C. To find out how many calories the athletes in the study burned,Pontzer,Carlson, and colleagues replaced the normal hydrogen and oxygen in their drinking water with harmless, uncommon isotopes(同位素)of those elements.By chemically tracing how these isotopes flush out in urine, sweat, and breath, scientists can calculate how much carbon dioxide an athlete produces — a measure that directly relates to how many calories they burn. Pontzer's team then collected energy consumption data over the course of the race to see how many calories they burned per day. They found that whatever the event is,energy consumption leveled off after about 20 days, eventually staying at a steady level at about 2.5 times an athlete's BMR.At that point, the body is burning calories more quickly than it can absorb food and turn it into energy, representing a biologically determined ceiling on human performance. “It was just one of those moments of discovery that as a scientist you just live for,” Pontzer said.“We ended up plotting out the very limits of human endurance, the envelope for what humans can do.” 1.What does the underlined word “ceiling” in the first paragraph refer to? A.The weakness of human bodies. B.The effect of lasting exercise. C.The way humans use energy. D.The limit of human endurance. 2.Which of the following is a direct measure of an athlete's energy consumption? A.The hydrogen and oxygen in their drinking water. B.The carbon dioxide their bodies create. C.The amount of their urine, sweat and breath. D.The remaining isotopes in their body. 3.What is the purpose of Pontzer's study? A.To confirm that an athlete's physical extreme is mainly determined by his BMR. B.To compare human limits in common exercise with those in endurance activities. C.To find out where the highest energy consumption of an athlete lies. D.To set a reasonable standard for researches concerned with human body 4.How did Pontzer feel when their study results came out? A.Excited. B.Regretful. C.Surprised. D.Hopeful.
I've had many wonderful holidays, but my favorite memory is that of a few summer weeks spent in Italy when I was about 13.My mom had to go to a clinic there for treatment, and we all went together as a family and took the opportunity to have a beautiful vacation as well.It was the first time abroad for me and it was a vacation that broadened my perspective, taught me a lot,and helped shape a bit of who I am today. Although we did visit many famous places in northern Italy,we stayed mostly in a little town where some friends of my parents lived.Nothing helped me understand Italian culture better than my stay in this picturesque, almost magical town that many haven't even heard of. Thanks to the holiday spent in Italy,I,quite a shallow girl, also discovered my passion for music, which stayed alive in me to this day and will probably stay forever. My parents' friends had a son,Ricardo, who was a pianist.Dad had repeatedly but unsuccessfully tried to make me study an instrument and stick to it.However, when I heard Ricardo play,I instantly fell in love with music and felt a great desire to learn it.Ricardo taught me the first song I ever played on the piano,a silly, playful little tune that I still know by heart. We took a short trip to the Italian Alps at some point.I had never seen such majestic beauty before! The snowcovered peaks, the intimidating rocks, the fresh, harsh air — what an experience! And what I remember impressed me the most was the fact that, although this was a popular touristic area, the region was incredibly clean, still “natural”,with places that seemed to never have been touched by humans. Then, the shallow teen that I was learned what a real treasure nature is and how important it is to protect it. 1.What was the main purpose for the author and her family to go to Italy? A.To cure the author's mother of her illness. B.To have a family reunion while travelling. C.To broaden and shape the author's perspective. D.To experience and learn from another culture. 2.What contributed to the author's passion for music? A.Her father's instructions. B.Ricardo's performance. C.The piano she played on. D.The local music culture. 3.The trip to the Italian Alps helped the author learn to ________. A.stick to her own passion B.balance between cultures C.get rid of her shallowness D.cherish and protect nature 4.What would be the best title of the text? Now in 2019, jazz music is an important part of Indianapolis’ art culture. Jazz clubs around the city still host concerts with local jazz musicians like Rob Dixon and Joel Tucker. One of these clubs, the Chatterbox Jazz Club, still has live jazz seven nights a week. But the real history of jazz in Indy is much less simple. Along with the Avenue’s culture, jazz music was gone from the streets for many years. Indiana Avenue was the heart of a neighborhood along the White River. It was a center for black music and live street music. The wealthy avoided this area. So it became a place that poorer families, including many African-American and immigrant (移民) families, moved to. Jazz prospered in the mix of American cultures around the Avenue in the 1930s and 1940s. But in the 1950s, things changed. After the war, there were projects to make the city beautiful and build a university nearby. Both of these seemed like good changes. However, the new university and buildings caused poorer families to have to leave the area. This destroyed the Indiana Avenue community - and with it, its jazz culture. After many years, Indianapolis remembered the value of its arts and music culture. It began to bring back lost cultures such as live music on the Avenue. To do so, it began to make new changes. The changes included repairing historic areas like the Avenue. Once again, the high living costs in these historic arts areas pushed low-income families out. Today there are several old-style jazz clubs where friends can meet up to remember the past or just enjoy a summer evening. It might seem at first that jazz is alive again, but there is a sad reality behind these jazz clubs: Modern Indy jazz is only a shadow (影子) of the lively culture that was once on Indiana Avenue. 1.What does the author mainly want to say in Paragraph 1? A.Jazz clubs can make big money. B.Jazz musicians often hold concerts. C.Jazz music is popular in Indianapolis. D.Jazz culture is just part of Indianapolis' culture. 2.What does the underlined word “prospered” in Paragraph 4 mean? A.Disappeared quickly. B.Arrived soon. C.Recovered soon. D.Developed well. 3.What did Indianapolis do to bring back its lost culture? A.It rebuilt some old important areas. B.It invited old jazz musicians to sing in the city. C.It educated people about the value of music culture. D.It settled low-income families in the Indiana Avenue community, 4.According to the passage, which of the following about modern Indy jazz is true? A.Its home culture is gone. B.Its styles are too traditional. C.It shows the sadness of the poor. D.It is no longer a favorite of the young.
In my senior year of high school, I got a part-time job working at the local coffee shop. One miserable rainy day, Hank, one of my regular customers came in looking depressed and defeated. My co-worker and I asked what the problem was and if we could help, but he said he wouldn’t want to tell any details. He just felt like going into bed, pulling the sheet up over his head, and staying there for a few years, and I knew exactly how he felt. Before he left, I handed him a bag along with his iced coffee. He looked at me questioningly because he hadn't ordered anything but the coffee. He opened the bag and saw that I had given him his favorite type of doughnut (油炸圈饼). “It's on me,”I told him.”Have a nice day.” He smiled and thanked me before turning around and heading back out into the rain. The next evening, when I was in the middle of making coffee, Hank drove up to the window. But instead of ordering anything, he handed me a single pink rose and a little note. I waited until I saw his Jeep leave the parking lot, then I ran to the back of the shop and read the note. It read:
Christine, Thanks for cheering me up yesterday. It is so nice to meet someone that’s genuinely sweet, warm and thoughtful and unselfish. Please don't change your ways because I truly believe that you will succeed. Have a great day! Hank
As time went on, I did come across more complaining customers. But anytime I felt depressed, I thought of Hank and his kindness. Then I would smile, hold my head up high, clear my throat and ask politely,”How can I help you?” 1.Why did Hank look depressed and defeated? A.He couldn’t afford a coffee any more. B.He had been caught in the rain. C.Something unpleasant had happened to him. D.He was tired and wanted to have a good sleep. 2.Why did Hank leave the author a note? A.To show his appreciation to the author. B.To encourage the author to work harder. C.To make suggestions to the author. D.To make an explanation of his condition. 3.What do we learn from the last paragraph? A.The author enjoyed himself at work. B.The author met few complaining customers. C.Hank never came to the coffee shop again. D.Hank’s kindness kept the author positive. 4.What does the author intend to tell us through the text? A.It’s hard to meet the needs of every customer. B.A small act of kindness makes a great difference. C.It’s important to have a positive attitude at work. D.Kind words are worth much and cost little.
