The English language is changing, and you are responsible! Whether we consider changes in grammar, spelling, pronunciation, or the very vocabulary of the language, you have played your part and continue to do so.

When we first learned basic grammar and spelling, perhaps in elementary school, we might have gotten the impression that these things were sacred. The rules that apply to such things might have been presented as unchanging and unchangeable. While this approach might be beneficial for teaching children, it is far from accurate.

The English language, like many others, is a living, growing, ever-evolving thing. Like it or not, you are involved in this change. These changes take many forms. Grammar and spelling have changed radically over the years and centuries, with the spelling differences in different countries today a reflection of this. While the language of a thousand years ago might be called English, most of us would hardly recognize it today as the same language.

The first involves changes in the pronunciation of words. Many are familiar with the differences between the British and American ways of pronouncing certain words. In addition to these differences, the pronunciation of many words has changed over the years because of how you have decided to pronounce them. For example, consider the word "err." The traditional pronunciation of this word rhymes with the word "her." However in recent years, more and more people have been pronouncing it so that it sounds like "air."

Another change in the language involves the addition and removal of words. The makers of dictionaries decide which words deserve to be officially adopted as part of the English language. Through the centuries, many words have come from other languages. In fact, English has probably done this more than any other language in the world, which is why spelling and pronunciation rules for English have so many exceptions.

Of course many slang words have been just short-lived fads that have died out quickly. Others, though, have been adopted by mainstream society and become respectable, as have many technical terms. So then remember, the next time you repeat the newest expression to hit the street, or make up your own words, you may be contributing to the future of the English language.

1.When we begin to learn English, we think        .

A.it is interesting to take up a new language

B.grammar and spelling rules are unchangeable

C.only grown-ups have the ability to affect a language

D.English rules are wrongly presented in fact

2.The pronunciation of words are changing because        .

A.people speak in different ways B.the British don’t agree with others

C.people adopted foreign words D.makers of dictionaries created them

3.Which of the following statement about English slang words is True?

A.All the slang words have become standard English.

B.English slang words are popular for a short time.

C.Some slang words have been accepted.

D.English slang words have different meanings actually.

4.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A.You can change the English language.

B.English is changing over years.

C.The British speaks differently from Americans.

D.Foreign words involved in English.

In effect, many people avoid the very attempts that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain inevitably brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment and self-improvement.

Ask a bachelor (单身汉) why he resists marriage even though he finds dating less and less satisfying. If he is honest he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure and excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.

Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night's sleep or a three-day vacation. I don't know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children. But couples who decide not to have children never know the joys of watching a child grow up or of playing with a grandchild.

Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.

1.According to the author, a bachelor resists marriage chiefly because _______ .

A.he is unwilling to take family responsibilities

B.he believes that life will be more cheerful if he remains single

C.he finds more fun in dating than in marriage

D.he fears it will put an end to all his fun adventure and excitement

2.Raising children, in the author's opinion, is _______ .

A.a moral duty B.a thankless job

C.a rewarding task D.a source of inevitable pain

3.To understand what true happiness is one must _______ .

A.have as much fun as possible during one's lifetime

B.make every effort to liberate oneself from pain

C.put up with pain under all circumstances

D.be able to distinguish happiness from fun

4.What is the author trying to tell us?

A.Happiness often goes hand in hand with pain.

B.One must know how to make money.

C.It is not important to make commitments.

D.It’s pain that leads to happiness.

The Sahara Festival is a celebration of the very recent past. The three-day event is not fixed to the same dates each year, but generally takes place in November or December. It is well attended by tourists, but even better attended by the locals.

During the opening ceremonies, after the official greetings from the government leaders, people who attend the festival begin to march smartly before the viewing stands, and white camels transport their riders across the sands. Horsemen from different nations display their beautiful clothes and their fine horsemanship. One following another, groups of musicians and dancers from all over the Sahara take their turn to show off their wonderful traditional culture. Groups of men in blue and yellow play horns and beat drums as they dance in different designs. On their knees in the sand, a group of women in long dark dresses dance with their hair: their long, dark, shiny hair is thrown back and forth in the wind to the rhythm of their dance.

The local and visiting Italian dogs are anxious to run after hares. The crowd is on its feet for the camel races. Camels and riders run far into the distance, and then return to the finish Line in front of the cheering people.

Towards the evening, there comes the grand finale of the opening day, an extremely exciting horserace. All the riders run very fast on horseback. Some riders hang off the side of their saddles(马鞍). Some even ride upside down—their legs and feet straight up in the air—all at full speed. Others rush down the course together, men arm in arm, on different horses. On and on they went. So fast and so wonderful!

A.has a very long history in North Africa

B.is held in the same place on the same day

A.how animals race on the first and the last days of the Sahara Festival

How to improve your study habits

Perhaps you are an average student with average intelligence and you think you will never be a top student. This is not always the case, however. You can receive better grades if you want to.

Set a goal for yourself

Set a goal that you want to achieve in one week or by the end of this term. Keep it in mind and it will motivate you to learn. You’ll find that you work harder when you focus on a target. 1.. Whatever you decide to do, don’t give up.

Plan your time carefully

Make a weekly schedule or chart of your time. 2.. Then decide on regular time for studying. Be sure to set aside enough time to complete your normal reading and homework. Of course, studying shouldn’t take all of the free time on the schedule. It’s important to set aside time for relaxation, hobbies, and entertainment as well.

3.

Listening to what the teacher says in class means less work later. Take notes to help you remember what the teacher says.

Review regularly

4.. Review important points mentioned in class as well as points you remain confused about. If you review regularly, the material will become more meaningful and you will remember it longer.

Develop a good attitude towards tests

The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. 5.. Therefore, don’t worry too much about a single test. Tests provide grades, but they also let you know what you need to spend more time studying.

There are other techniques that might help you with your study. Only a few have been mentioned here. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these. Improving your study habits will improve your grades.

A. Learn from your mistakes

B. Make good use of your time in class

C. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test

D. Fill in such time as eating, sleeping, and classes

E. Go over your notes as soon as you can after class

F. The more time you spend with the language, the faster you will learn

G. Make sure that your goal is realistic and that you keep working towards it

British families are throwing away 1.4 million bananas that are perfectly good to eat every day, at a cost of 80m a year.

Supermarket Sainsbury’s found that one in three people throw away bananas if there is a single bruise(擦伤) or mark on the skin. More than one in ten customers also admit to throw away the fruit if there is any green on the skin.

The supermarket is making efforts to reduce food waste. It’s pushing British shoppers to make bread and desserts out of bruised and blackened bananas.

Starting from this week, Sainsbury’s will launch hundreds of “banana rescue” stations to encourage shoppers to give bruised bananas a chance. The stations will provide tips and ideas on how to bake with bananas or use them in drinks.

The move is part of the supermarket’s 10m “Waste less, save more initiative”, and the stations are already set up in 500 stores nationwide.

The supermarket’s head of sustainability, Paul Crewe, said Sainsbury’s wants to encourage customers to use the fruit in different ways.

“We are determined to help shoppers reduce the number of bananas going to waste at home too,” he said.

“61% of Britons admit they never use the bruised bananas in baking, so we want to encourage customers to use their fruit in different ways. There is no need to throw away the bruised ones anymore.” he added.

Abbey Inn is a special hotel. You might spend a holiday there and never meet any other people. No other guests, sometimes. No full-time employee.

The place looked pretty to Katrina Arthur. So she and her husband booked a weekend holiday last year. However, things started to go wrong as soon as they walked into the room.

“Smelt terrible,” Arthur said, “The air conditioning didn’t work, either. We started checking the sheets and the bed. They were really dirty.” She went to the desk to complain, but no one was there. Arthur found no employees in the hotel at all. So she cleaned the room herself. When they woke the next day, they still found no one else in the hotel. So they put the room key in a drop box and got away.

Later she left a statement online. “I was honest; I wanted people to know.” she said.

The next month, Andrew Szakaly, owner of Abbey, sent a letter to Arthur, saying her statement had caused injury to the hotel, and Szakaly would sue(起诉) her unless she took it down.

Arthur was scared. She deleted(删除) the statement, but still the hotel asked her for an extra $350 anyway.

It was a cold and windy night. My friend and I had met after a long time, and were chatting for hours. We did not notice the time passing by, and soon it was close to ten in the night. We decided to take an auto rickshaw(黄包车) to go to our house.

It started raining, and we hurried to get into an auto rickshaw and reach our place. None of the auto rickshaws stopped for us, except one.

The driver asked us where we wanted to go and we told the place. Without saying anything about the fee, he said, “please get in.”

We thanked him and got in.

Since it was very cold, I asked the driver to stop at any small restaurant or a tea shop. We wanted to have a cup of hot tea. The driver stopped near a small restaurant. We ordered tea and asked the driver to join us and have a cup of tea. The driver refused. I insisted, but he refused again politely.

I was really surprised.

In 15 minutes we reached our house. We paid the fee and the driver thanked us. On an impulse, I stopped him, as I really wanted to ask him why he refused to drink tea with us at the restaurant.

He thought for a moment and replied, “Sir, My son passed away this morning in an accident. I don’t have enough money for his funeral(葬礼), so I made a promise not to drink anything until I earn enough money. That’s why I didn’t drink tea when you offered. Please don’t misunderstand.”

We both were touched and offered him more money for his son’s funeral. He politely refused.

“Thank you for your generosity, sir. In one or two hours, if I get one or two more customers, I will earn the money I need.” Then he left the place.

A.Because he didn’t like tea.

B.Because he didn’t like the author.

C.Because he had made a promise to his son that he would never drink tea again.

D.Because he had made a promise not to drink until he earned enough money for his son’s funeral.

3.Which words can best describe the driver?
