I have been a teacher for some years. In my opinion, I don't believe Artificial Intelligence (AI) could replace my teaching career. I have always been interested in human connection, and the ways in which I can use these connections to inspire change and make a difference. 1., there are other ways where AI could make a more efficient and effective difference than I could on my own.

My teaching experiences over the past several years have been creative and inspiring- 1 believe that the job of educators extends beyond simply teaching students a set curriculum. 2.. They must constantly reflect on ways to better their teaching, and they must inspire their students to be the best versions of themselves. And now with the help of Al, they could achieve these goals much easier.

3. . First, AI can be used to promote fundamental skills, such as mathematical education and vocabulary lessons. Additionally, I see AI being used for necessary tasks such as answering questions and grading assignments. Thus I could focus my attention on establishing human connection, individualizing lesson plans and inspiring my students.

The benefit AI brings is far beyond my own classroom. 4.. According to Todd Leopold, close to 800 million people worldwide are functionally illiterate (不识字的).Due to its ability to efficiently pass knowledge across large groups of people, fewer teachers may be needed in some schools. 5..

A. Since students will always need a human teacher

B. I believe AI could provide a strong basis for educational equality around the world

C. I think AI is a powerful assistant to my future classroom

D. The need for students to learn how to use Al will also grow

E. Although human connection may never be able to be fully replaced by AI

F. This could be an opportunity for students everywhere to receive equal education

G. They must observe and get to know their students in order to individualize educational plan

A chance meeting between two men who realized they had both been abused in the same Surrey children’s care home has led to a campaign that has seen hundreds of former residents claiming they were also victims of physical, emotional and sexual abuse.

Music producer Raymond Stevenson, physically abused during his time at the Shirley Oaks home in the 70s, met a childhood friend last year who revealed he’d been abused in the institution. Within a few months, the Shirley Oaks Survivors Association(SOSA) was hundreds strong.

“We have been in contact with over 300 people and the stories we are getting are just terrible,” Stevenson says. “Every time we interview someone and hear about what happened to them, it brings tears to our eyes. Reliving(再现) some of the horrors they went through hasn't been easy.”

There have been two major police investigations into abuse at children’s homes in South London and three people including a swimming instructor, William Hook, have been condemned for offences relating to Shirley Oaks.

Another operation is currently on-going, but SOSA has lost faith in the authorities who they claim have covered up the whole picture of abuse in Shirley Oaks. “We don’t trust them and that’s why we have decided to do this campaign ourselves,” Stevenson explains.

A couple of weeks ago, dozens of former Shirley Oaks residents crowded into a Lambeth council(议会)meeting-the authority which ran the show until its closure the mid-1980s. Councilor after councilor spoke of their shame at what had been allowed to happen to children in their care.

Among the crowd was the award-winning author Alex Wheatle who has written about the abuse he suffered as a child at Shirley Oaks. “We have not come here to go to war with the councilwe have come here to gain your support, ” Wheatle told the meeting.

The Shirley Oaks association is doing more than compiling evidence. It is using music to press its case. A song entitled “Don’t Touch It—It’s Mine” includes personal testimony(证词) from victims. “I was abused mentally, physically, emotionally and violently,” the track begins. “Of the original 16 of us, 12 have killed themselves...”

“We’re not going to be told lies anymore,” Stevenson explains. “We are not going to leave it in the hands of lawyers, politicians or council officials to tell us what happened to us. We want to discover it ourselves and we know music and dance and poetry are ways that can tell a greater story.”

1.What is the purpose of setting up SOSA?

A.To show sympathy for the abused children in society.

B.To reveal the abuse at a children’s care home.

C.To find the living victims from a care home.

D.To aid those people abused at a young age.

2.What can we learn from the passage?

A.The former victims depend much on the police for investigation.

B.Twelve of the sixteen children were killed in Shirley Oaks.

C.All the people committing offences in Shirley Oaks have been arrested.

D.The former local authorities must have neglected their duty.

3.What has been done by campaigners of SOSA?

A.Collecting evidence for the police.

B.Creating music for the campaign.

C.Going to war with the government.

D.Turning to lawyers for assistance.

4.Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.SOSA sings for justice.

B.Child abuse in Shirley Oaks.

C.Terrible memories in Shirley Oaks.

D.A campaign to abuse the authorities by SOSA  .

It is becoming more and more important for researchers to closely observe our sea life, with climate change and overfishing damaging our oceans. However, this is almost impossible since human presence scares the animals. Now, thanks to The Soft Robotic Fish, also called SoFi, researchers may not only be able to keep a close eye on the creatures, but also uncover undersea secrets that have been confusing us for centuries.

Built by MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), the snow-white remote-controlled robot closely emulates real fish, complete with a flexible tail and two "fins". Though not the first autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) created to observe the oceans, SoFi solves many of the issues that have hindered (妨碍)the usefulness of previous robots.

AUVs traditionally have had to be tied to a boat because radio frequency communications do not work well underwater. To solve the problem, CSAIL director Daniela Rus and her team used sound waves which can travel greater distances, allowing drivers using a waterproofed Super Nintendo controller to pilot SoFi from up to 50 feet away. To ensure SoFi can freely move around the ocean, a pump moves water from one balloon-like structure to the other through its soft rubber tail, while a controller fitted with a battery powers the robot through the ocean, unhindered by propellers (螺旋桨).

During test dives in Fiji's Rainbow Reef, SoFi moved alongside the sea life at depths of 50 feet for up to 40 minutes at a time, taking high-resolution photos and videos. Even more importantly, it was able to do so without causing any disturbance. The researchers say sometimes the fish would swim alongside the strange-looking robo- fish out of curiosity, while at other times they appeared completely unaware of its existence.

While SoFi currently only records videos, future versions will include sensors. "For us, this fish is magical," says Rus. “We imagine someday it might help us uncover more mysteries from the amazing underwater world that we know so little about."

1.Why was SoFi created?

A.To protect fish from being caught.

B.To stop oceans from being polluted.

C.To learn about the underwater world

D.To solve the issues AUVs have found.

2.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “emulates” in Paragraph2?

A.Feeds. B.Catches.

C.Protects. D.Imitates.

3.What is the third paragraph mainly about?

A.The development of AUVs.

B.Working principles of SoFi.

C.How AUVs are used underwater.

D.SoFi's contribution to fish protection.

4.What is the main advantage of SoFi?

A.It will not scare real fish. B.It can record videos.

C.It is equipped with sensors. D.It cannot be seen by real fish.

Naomi Shihab Nye has lots of things to write about. She never seems to run out of ideas, Naomi writes poetry for young people and adults, but she is also the author of essays, children's picture books, songs, and a novel for teenagers.

Where does Naomi get her ideas? She sees poetry in the details of everyday life, like the way things smell or taste, the sounds of nature, the voices of her family, and the colors of a flower or a bird's wing or a strawberry.

Naomi's poetry is also often influenced by places she has lived in and visited. Naomi was raised by her Palestinian father and American mother. She grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, US, Jerusalem Israel; and San Antonio, Texas, US. Each of these places has its own unique features, which Naomi has described with her rich, descriptive language.

Naomi also writes about her double cultures and the conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians in the Middle East. Today, Naomi has settled down in San Antonio. She knows many people who have a Mexican-American identity, and she works their experiences into her poetry. Naomi focuses on the ways that people of different cultures and backgrounds are similar rather than different. She has even traveled to the Middle East and Asia to promote international goodwill through the arts. Naomi firmly believes in the power of writing to change the world and help people find common ground.

Naomi Shihab Nye began writing poetry as soon as she learned how to write. She published her first poem when she was only seven years old! Since that time, Naomi has written and edited more than 20 books. She often tells young writers to write about their daily lives—the things they observe and the feelings they have. That's a good reminder for a writer!

We may be living in the digital age, but reading books is still a big part of growing up. When they’re in primary school, children read books that really challenge them. But once they reach secondary school, the level of difficulty doesn’t change much. Secondary school students tend to read books which are also read by upper primary students. They are not challenging themselves enough.

To discover these trends, I analyzed data collected by Accelerated Reader (AR) software, which asks pupils to check their understanding of the books they’ve chosen to read. The difficulty — which I call “readability”.

I also created two lists of books: one for the books that most secondary pupils had chosen to read, and another for the books they had voted as their favorites. According to the readability, these students’ favorite books tend to be much more advanced than the other books they chose, but they could still understand them. The rest of the books most often chosen by them are quite simple.

You might think that students who read harder books might make more mistakes and understand them less well. But students’ quality of comprehension does not depend on the difficulty of the book, no matter what year of secondary school they’re in. Having an interest is the most obvious factor here — if you like the book, you try hard to really understand it.

As children become teenagers, they listen less to advice from adults and more to advice from kids of their age. So, rather than trying to lecture young people on the benefits of Jane Austen, we should make the nature of the problem clear to them. Students should challenge each other to read more difficult books. Adults could help by setting up noticeboards or organizing social media networks for young people to share their recommendations. And teachers can lend a hand by setting aside time for reading in school. Young people will realize the problems that come when they don’t challenge themselves to read difficult books.

1.What can we learn from the first paragraph?

A.Children spend little time on after-class reading

B.Secondary school students seldom read tough books

C.Children’s reading interest tends to decrease as they grow up

D.Primary students have difficulty choosing good reading materials

2.The author made use of AR software to ________.

A.understand children’s different reading styles

B.show the average time children spend on reading

C.find out the causes of children’s reading difficulties

D.make clear the difficulty levels of books read by children

3.What can we infer about secondary school students from the readability scores?

A.They find some advanced books interesting

B.They often make mistakes during advanced reading

C.They prefer to read books recommended by their parents

D.They can hardly improve their scores on reading comprehension

4.According to Paragraph 4, what is vital for improving reading comprehension?

A.Basic knowledge

B.Reading skills

C.Motivation

D.Instruction

5.What does the author want to express in the last paragraph?

A.Designing relatively difficult textbooks is necessary

B.Improving students’ reading is a shared responsibility

C.Advanced technology should be used in reading reaching

D.Students should be encouraged to read more literary works

MADRID  — What is it that makes people happy? Youth, health, a good job, good looks, a flashy car? None of these things, Spanish experts say.

The concept of happiness is coming under increasingly close examination in Spain. As the nation rises to the club of the world’s wealthiest countries, people are discovering that material things do not bring happiness.

“Most people use money as a measure of human value,” says Jesus Yn-fante, author of a book on Spain’s 300 biggest fortunes. “Expensive products are regarded as the best. The rich are admired simply for being rich,” Yn-fante said. Yet psychologists (心理学家) warn that happiness cannot be bought. They advise people to look for it in human relations and in the small pleasures of everyday life.

Many people regard happiness as moment of ecstatic pleasure (狂喜) — something that, by definition, cannot last — while others speak of it as peace and acceptance of oneself. Polls (问卷 ) in different countries indicate that between 65 and 85 percent of the world’s population regard themselves as reasonably happy.

Around 40 percent of a person’s happiness is thought to be determined by genetics ( 遗传), while the rest depends on childhood environment and the process of growing up.

Perhaps the most surprising thing about happiness is that it has little to do with age, health, wealth, or other values thought to be important in Western society.

For most Spaniards, happiness is linked with feeling close to other people.

Happy people accept their limitations and set themselves reachable goals, experts say. There are lifestyle choices which favour happiness, such as exercise, eating carbohydrates (含碳 水化合物的食物) and exposing oneself to sunlight.

But the main secret of happiness is to take pleasure in small things.

“If you are given a choice between eternal (永久的) happiness and cheese sandwich, take the sandwich,” advises musician Julian Hernandez.

An unpleasant smell floated into my nose as the bowl of fried stinky tofu(臭豆腐) settled onto my grandmother’s dinner table. I immediately sat back. The smell ruined my appetite, and I pushed the dish away.

“It’s supposed to stink. Just give it a try!” my grandmother said.

Holding my breath, I unwillingly took a bite. To my surprise, the tofu beneath the fried skin was warm, soft, and mouthwatering. Since then, whenever I visited my grandmother’s house, I would rush to the kitchen for the stinky tofu with excitement. Thus, stinky tofu became more than a household tradition. It became my favorite dish.

Along with the stinky tofu, I would meet my Uncle Chan on every visit. As an immature boy, I never understood my uncle’s condition of Down syndrome(唐氏综合征).

He was an unfriendly and terrible creature in my eyes. He constantly walked around the house, talking to himself. Whenever he was within view, I would run away in fear.

However, one day, my view of my uncle suddenly changed. I was just getting out of my bed when I heard soft steps approaching. It was my uncle. My muscles froze. He slowly sat next to me and touched my face gently, as a mother would stroke (抚摸)a baby.

A wide smile emerged from his blank expression. How beautiful his smile was! I could not help but smile back. My fear disappeared gradually, and my muscles relaxed. For the first time, I could see softness and warmth in his eyes.

My uncle very much resembles stinky tofu. Stinky tofu smells unpleasant on the outside,  yet  feels  warm  and  soft  in  the  inside.  Like  stinky  tofu,  my  uncle’s  Down syndrome made me keep my distance at first. Yet, I learned that deep inside, he is harmless and has a loving nature.

Some people tend to look down upon disabled people and regard them as unfit for a regular life. As I was able to see through the outer surface of the tofu, these people are unable to see through the surface of prejudice(偏见). As a result, they judge the disabled with one glance.

The outside and inside of the stinky tofu exist as two extremely different worlds. Perhaps that is what makes it such a tasty dish. Not only is it delicious, stinky tofu offers a valuable lesson: never judge people at first glance, for true beauty comes from the inside.

1.Why did stinky tofu become the author’s favorite dish?

A. It was related to family tradition.

B. It turned out to be quite delicious.

C. Grandma encouraged him to try it.

D. His appetite for food had increased.

2.What did the author think of his uncle at first?

A. He was a quiet person.

B. He was an energetic guy.

C. He was an immature man.

D. He was a strange creature.

3.The author’s attitude towards Uncle Chan changed when     .

A. Chan’s footsteps woke up the author

B. Chan showed his friendliness to the author

C. Chan displayed his love towards his mother

D. Chan’s blank expression made the author smile

4.The comparison between stinky tofu and the author’s uncle serves to     _.

A. highlight the nature of Uncle Chan

B. analyze the family relationship

C. describe a childhood memory

D. introduce a traditional Chinese food

5.What does the author mainly want to tell us in the passage?

A. We shouldn’t judge by appearances.

B. A person’s taste changes over time.

C. Blood is thicker than water.

D. You are what you eat.

If you're worried that too much “screen time ”could badly influence your child's intelligence new research suggests you might be right. By analyzing the data gathered from over 4500U. S. kids aged 8 to 11 between 2016 and 2017Jeremy Walsha postdoctoral fellow with the CHEO Research Institute in Ottawa found that too much “screen time” could be harming your child's intelligence.

Kids with the sharpest intellects spent less than two hours a day on their cellophanes tablets and computers coupled with 9 to 11 hours of sleep and at least an hour of physical activity. Too much screen time could be affecting kids ability to focus especially if they are switching between apps on a device or between different screens at the same time Walsh suggested. “ One leading theory is that much time on screens is spent multitasking using multiple apps or devices at once” he said. “This can interfere with a child's ability to focus and keep interest on a task. It can be damaging the building blocks for good cognition(认知).”

Sleep is important for brain development since that's when the brain reorganizes itself and grows Walsh added. Besides exercise has been shown to increase blood flow to the brain and oxygenation of brain tissues and increases the connectivity of networks in the brain. Too much screen time could lead to a“ cascade”(瀑布) effect where kids don't get enough sleep and then are less active during the day.“ You can see how this would have an impact on brain health” Walsh said.

What should parents do? Walsh advised setting firm rules about the use of screens including how long children are using the screens the kinds of apps they are using and how many screens they are using at once. Concerned parents also should preview games or apps before letting their child play seek out more interactive(交互的)options that engage the child's mind and use parental controls to block or filter content and limit screen time.

“Let me ______,” he said, pulling out his wallet and bills. “Twenty, forty, eighty…Oh! You’re right,” he said with surprise, “I’m ______ a $20 bill.”

“Here you go,” I said, smiling with pride, as if I was a(n) ______ who had solved a mystery. “Thank you so much,” he said, bending down and shaking my hand. My heart ______. Before saying goodbye, he asked my mom for my name and ______. “I want to send your daughter a thank-you card,” he said.

On my way home, my ______ was racing. Twenty dollars. What could I have done with it? I bet I could have bought a puppy or every single candy bar in town! But now ______ of that would happen. Yet I knew I had done the right thing.

How to be a better reader

Reading is an extremely important skill.1. Here are some suggestions on how to be a better reader.

Know your reading purpose.2. The kind of reading you do in class or for your homework is different from how you read a novel for pleasure in the summer vacation. If you know your reading purposes you can choose the best reading methods.

Use all the information in the book. Good textbooks are well-organized with title subtitles introductions summaries or conclusions. Many books also have pictures with captions(说明文字).3. Another aspect of good writing is that each paragraph has a topic sentence. If you concentrate on understanding the topic sentence this may help you to understand what comes next.

4. You can't really expect to understand a difficult book if you are trying to read in the same room with the television on and your little brother distracting(使某人分心) you. The same goes for reading on the bus on the way to school. You can't expect to read a textbook and listen to music at the same time either. Try to find a quiet and comfortable place with good light and your dictionaries and other materials nearby.

Use your dictionary wisely. A common mistake of ESL students is to look up each unknown word in the texts they are given to read.5.It can even make understanding more difficult because by the time you reach the end of the paragraph you have forgotten what you read at the beginning! So use your dictionary wisely.

A. Choose the right time to read.

B. Choose a right place to read.

C. Look at all these first before starting to read.

D. But it takes a long time and can be very boring.

E. The wider your vocabulary is the easier you will find your reading.

F. Reading is also an excellent way to improve your general English.

G. the way you read a book or a text depends largely on your reasons for reading it.

Imagine a cat that does not need someone to clean up after it keeps an older person company and help them remember to take their medicine. That is the shared dream of the toy maker Hasbro and scientists at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The researchers received a $3-million-dollar award from the National Science Foundation for a special project. They want to find ways to add artificial intelligence, or A.I., to Hasbro’s “Joy for All” robotic cat.

The cat has already been for sale for two years. Though priced over 1000 dollars, it sold quite well. It was meant to act as a “companion” for older people. Now the project is aimed at developing additional abilities for the cat. Researchers at Brown’s Humanity-Centered Robotics Initiative are working to decide which activities older adults may need the most. They hope to make the cat perform a small number of activities very well. Such activities include

finding lost objects and reminding the person to take medicine or visit their doctor. They also want to keep the cost down to just a few hundred dollars.

It is an idea that has appealed to Jeanne Elliott. Her 93-year-old mother Mary Derr lives with her in South Kingstown. Derr has dementia (痴呆). The Joy for All cat that Elliott bought this year has become a true companion for Derr. The cat stays with Derr and keeps her calm while Eliot is at work. Elliott said a robotic cat that helps her mother to remember to take her medicine and be careful when she walks would be greater.

The researchers are trying to learn how the improved cats will complete helpful activities and how they will communicate. They say that they do not want a talking cat, however. Instead they are trying to design a cat that can move its head in a special way to successfully communicate its message. In the end, they hope to create an exchange between the human and the cat in which the human feels the cat needs them. By doing so, the researchers hope they can even help prevent feelings of loneliness and sadness among elderly people.

1.What’s the purpose of the project?

A. To relieve the pain of the elderly.

B. To promote the sales of a medicine.

C. To help make the robotic cat smarter.

D. To invent a robotic cat for the elderly.

2.Compared with the old model, the new robotic cat will be ________.

A. cheaper

B. smaller

C. more talkative

D. more expensive

3.What does Paragraph 3 intend to tell us?

A. The more functions of the cat, the better.

B. The cat gives much help to the elderly.

C. There is no cure for dementia at present.

D. Mary Derr would have died without the cat.

4.What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. A talking cat is quite popular among the elderly.

B. Feelings of sadness among the elderly are unavoidable.

C. Each family can afford such a cat in the future.

D. The feeling of being needed is vital to the elderly.

Many kids help out around the house with chores(家庭杂务) such as emptying the dishwasher putting laundry away and taking out the trash. In exchange some kids get allowances(补贴) or other rewards such as extra computer time.

But some people do not think that kids should get rewards for doing chores. Susie Walton a parenting educator and family coach believes that by rewarding kids parents are sending a message that work isn't worth doing unless you get something in return. “Running any kind of household is a team effort” Susie said“a home is a living space for everyone in the family. It's important for kids to see that we all have responsibilities in the house and that families decide together how they want their home to look and how they are going to keep it looking like everyone wants it to look.”

Other people believe that getting a cash allowance or other rewards motivates kids to do chores and it also teaches them real world lessons about how we need to work to earn money. There are also new applications that give kids points and digital gifts that can be redeemed(兑取) either online or in the real world. With the Chore Monster app kids earn digital points by completing chores that they can turn in for real-life rewards such as extra Xbox time or a trip to the mall. “Our goal is to encourage kids to earn rewards” says Chris Bergman founder of Chore Monster“Kids need positive reinforcement(强化) to help motivate them.”

What do you think? Should kids be rewarded for doing chores? Or should kids help out around their homes without getting anything in return? Write a 200-word response. Send it to tfkasks4you@timeforkids.com. Your response may be published in a future issue of Time For Kids. Please include your grade and contact information of your parent or teacher if you want your response to be published. The deadline for responding is February 18.

I used to be crazy about the hunting season. The excitement of waiting for a prey(猎物)and the pride of showing off the kill fascinated me. However, everything changed after that cold morning.

Early on that day of the late fall, I set off alone for the woods, packing a gun, a bottle of hot coffee and three thick sandwiches. After finding the fresh deer’s tracks in the snow, I settled down behind a little bush.

I sat there for about an hour. It was then that I saw him. A deer, a big beautiful deer! There was no cover nearer to him than 30 yards. Surely I couldn’t miss! I waited for him to realize I was there. I waited for him to be shocked and run away. But he fooled me completely. He came towards me! He was curious, I suppose, or maybe he was stupid---how else can you explain it? Well, that deer walked right up to where I was sitting. Then he stopped and looked at me!

What happened next is hard to believe, but it’s true. And it all seemed quite natural. Just as when a friendly young deer comes near you, I reached up and scratched his head. And he liked to be scratched. In fact, he practically asked for more. Then, I fed him my sandwich! Yes, I know what a deer eats, but that deer ate my sandwich. Well, he finally went his way, down the hill and up the deer trail. Shoot him? Not me. You wouldn’t have either, not after that. I just watched him go.

When I was about half way back, I heard two shots, followed by a dull slam(撞击)a few seconds later. Those two shots usually mean a kill. I had forgotten there were other hunters that day.

Those hunters would never know they could have scratched his head.

1.Why didn’t the author kill the deer?

A.He preferred to shoot a shy deer. B.He was fooled by the tricky deer.

C.He was sympathetic for the deer. D.He was too shocked to shoot the deer.

2.What most probably happened to the deer in the end?

A.Other hunters shot the deer to death.

B.Other hunters scratched the deer’s head too.

C.The deer managed to escape from being shot.

D.The deer would become friends with the author.

3.What’s the best title of this text?

A.A Hunting in Late Fall. B.A Lovely Deer.

C.The Cruel Killing. D.The Last Hunting.
