Have you ever wished you didn’t have to wake up early and go all the way to school? For 700,000 American kids, this wish comes true.1.This kind of learning has different names: online learning or distance learning. Regardless of what it is called, this idea may create an impression of a lonely kid reading pages of information on a computer screen rather than from a book or an image of another kid spending the day playing video games instead of learning mathematics or reading a book. Where online education is concerned, both of these are false! Actually, online learning simply means learning differently. 2.Flexibility is the main advantage. Students can attend school wherever and whenever they desire. Homework can be turned in from anywhere the student has Internet access. Additionally, many online schools will allow students to work at their own pace. Another advantage of online schooling is with the variety of courses. Most online schools teach the same basic classes like English, math, science, and history.3.However, traditional schools are often unable to offer these types of classes if there are not enough students. Online schools also have different types of learning tools for kids to use. For example, many online schools have special Web sites where only students registered in online classes can watch videos, see lessons presented, or chat with teachers and other students. Some online schools have live class times where students can call and talk with the teacher directly. 4. Computer technology is amazing, and we use computers for chatting with our friends, listening to music, and playing games.5.Since 2012, at least 38 states either have had their own online schools or made rules for students attending them. It looks like online schools are here to stay, but only you can decide if this type of learning is right for you. A. Online schools offer many benefits for the learners. B. Of course, there are some disadvantages of going to school online. C. Almost every part of our lives is affected by it, and school is no exception. D. They attend school over the Internet using ordinary home or library computers. E. Other online schools even have online clubs where kids can talk about their hobbies. F. Some online schools also offer specialized classes in subjects such as space science, French, or zoology. G. For some students, online school may be ideal, but for others, traditional school may better meet their needs.
When Peter Fortune was ten years old grown-up people sometimes used to tell him he was a “difficult”child. He never understood what they meant. He didn’t feel difficult at all. He didn’t throw milk bottles at the garden wall, or tip tomato ketchup over his head and pretend it was blood, or slash at his granny’s ankle with his sword, though he occasionally thought of these things. Apart from all vegetables except potatoes, and fish, eggs and cheese, there was nothing he would not eat. He wasn’t noisier or dirtier or more stupid than anyone he knew. His name was easy to say and spell. His face, which was pale and freckled, was easy enough to remember. He went to school every day like all other children and never made that much fuss about it. He was only as offensive to his sister as she was to him. Policemen never came knocking at the front door wanting to arrest him. Doctors in white coats never offered to take him away to the madhouse. As far as Peter was concerned, he was really quite easy. What was difficult about him? It was not until he had been a grown-up himself for many years that Peter finally understood. They thought he was difficult because he was so silent. That seemed to bother people. The other problem was he liked being by himself. Not all the time, of course. Not even every day. But most days he liked to go off somewhere for an hour to his bedroom, or the park. He liked to be alone and think his thoughts. Now, grown-ups like to think they know what’s going on inside a ten-year-old’s head. And it’s impossible to know what someone is thinking if they keep quiet about it. People would see Peter lying on his back on a summer’s afternoon, chewing a piece of grass and staring at the sky. “Peter, Peter! What are you thinking about?” they would call to him. And Peter would sit up with a start. “Oh, nothing. Nothing at all.”Grown-ups knew that something was going on inside that head, but they couldn’t hear it or see it or feel it. They couldn’t tell Peter to stop it, because they did not know what it was he was doing in there. He could have been setting his school on fire or feeding his sister to an alligator and escaping in a hot air balloon, but all they saw was a boy staring at the blue sky without blinking, a boy who did not hear you when you called his name. As for being on his own, grown-ups didn’t much like that either. They don’t even like other grown-ups being on their own. When you join in, people can see what you’re up to. You’re up to what they’re up to. You have to join in, or you’ll spoil it for everyone else. Peter had different ideas. In fact, he thought, if people spent less time joining in and making others join in, and spent a little time each day alone remembering who they were or who they might be, then the world would be a happier place and wars might never happen... The trouble with being a daydreamer who doesn’t say much is that the teachers at school, especially the ones who don’t know you very well, are likely to think you are rather stupid. Or, if not stupid, then dull. No one can see the amazing things that are going on in your head. A teacher who saw Peter staring out the window or at a blank sheet of paper on his desk might think that he was bored, or stuck for an answer. But the truth was quite different. 1.It can be learned from the first paragraph that ________. A.Peter liked playing practical jokes B.Peter wasn’t particular about food at all C.boys generally did some crazy things D.Peter knew why he was called“difficult” 2.Which of the following would Peter be most likely to do? A.To walk around a lake for quite a while. B.To break the neighbor’s fence for fun. C.To tie a dirty dustbin to a dog’s tail. D.To sleep in the tent with his friends. 3.What is the main reason that Peter was considered“difficult”by grown-ups? A.He was far from communicative. B.He turned a deaf ear to others. C.He did not do well in his studies. D.He preferred to live on his own. 4.What might the author continue to write about in the following part? A.Effective measures to help Peter out. B.How the unique ideas Peter had amazed others. C.Difficulties keeping Peter from learning well. D.Further prejudice against Peter among grown-ups. 5.What can serve as the best title of this passage? A.The Daydreamer B.The Troublemaker C.The Hard Nut D.The Dark Horse
WASHINGTON, D.C. --- The FBI on Monday released new data about hate crimes. It showed that more hate crimes were carried out in the United States last year. There was an increase in incidents motivated by intolerance against Jews, Muslims and LGBT people, among others. The term LGBT includes lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. There were more than 6,100 reported incidents of hate crimes in 2016, up from more than 5,800 the year before. The FBI made this report based on data submitted by law enforcement(执行) agencies across the country. The new data follows a trend from 2015. The trend shows that the largest share of victims last year, nearly six in 10, were targeted(为目标) due to intolerance against the victim's race or ethnicity. The number of hate crimes caused by intolerance against a person's race or ethnic background rose to 3,489 from 3,310 a year earlier, the FBI report said. Half of those hate crimes were caused by racism against African-American people. One in five victims were targeted because of their religion. One in six were due to sexual orientation, the report said. The FBI data gains a general look at hate crime in the nation. But this report is considered incomplete because not all areas report their hate crimes. According to the FBI, 88 percent of agencies choosing to participate in the hate crime statistics program “reported that no hate crimes occurred” in their areas last year. Speaking earlier this year after a series of threats targeting Jewish schools and community centers, former FBI director James B. Comey admitted this. He said that the bureau needs "to do a better job of tracking and reporting hate crime." Only then can we understand what is happening and how to stop it. “Hate crime is different from other crime,” Comey said in prepared remarks delivered in May. “They damage at our sense of self, our sense of belonging. The end result is loss: loss of trust, loss of dignity, and in the worst case, loss of life.” The FBI report, which collects information on the offenders in the hate crimes tallied(总计) last year, found that the largest share, nearly half were white. About a quarter of the people who carried out hate crimes were African-American. Four in 10 of the people identified as “known hate crime offenders” committed simple assault. This could mean a threat of violence or causing a minor injury. Nearly a quarter committed aggravated(=serious) assault, which is more serious and often involves the use of a deadly weapon. The report also identified more than 1,600 people who committed hate crimes by damaging, vandalizing or trying to destroy property. 1.The author emphasizes the situation of hate crimes mainly by using ________. A.examples B.statistics C.comparison D.quotation 2.Why is hate crime different from other crimes in the article? A.The article highlights that hate crimes are more likely to end with injuries. B.The article emphasizes that hate crimes target people’s sense of belonging. C.The article explains that hate crimes are tracked more often than other crimes. D.The article shows that hate crimes occur more often in minority communities. 3.Which of the following are the results of hate crimes? ______. ①violence or injuries ②loss of dignity or life ③damage to property ④ use of deadly weapons A.①②③④ B.②③④ C.①③④ D.①②③ 4.What’s the genre of this passage? A.News report. B.Argumentation. C.Description. D.Research report.
It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you’re eager for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s desire. It doesn’t interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream, for the adventure of being alive. It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon. I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life’s betrayals(背叛) or have become depressed and closed from fear of further pain! I want to know if you can sit with pain, mine or your own, without moving to hide it or fade it, or fix it. I want to know if you can be with joy, mine or your own, if you can dance with wildness and let the wild joy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without warning us to be careful, to be realistic, to remember the limitations of being human. It doesn’t interest me if the story you are telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself; if you can bear the scolding of betrayal and not betray your own soul; if you can be faithless and therefore trustworthy. I want to know if you can see beauty even when it’s not pretty every day, and if you can gain your own life from its presence. I want to know if you can live with failure, yours and mine, and still stand on the edge of the lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, “___________” while failed. It doesn’t interest me to know where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up, after the night of sorrow and despair, tired and hurt to the bone, and do what needs to be done to feed the children. It doesn’t interest me who you know or how you came here. I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink(退缩) back. It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what makes you continue from the inside when all else is away. I want to know if you can be alone with yourself, and if you truly like the company(伙伴) you keep in the empty moments. 1.The author repeats the sentence “It doesn’t interest me...” to________. A.arouse interest and emphasize his opinion B.present his opinions one after another C.show his disinterest in others’ life attitude D.display his excellent writing skills 2.The missing sentence in paragraph 4 can be _________. A.No, it’s not fair. B.No, it can’t be true. C.Yes, I can! D.Yes, nothing is impossible! 3.The author may agree with the following opinions EXCEPT________. A.Even if you’re laughed at, you’ll explore the possibilities of life. B.Even if you suffer a lot, you can live with suffering and still enjoy life. C.Even if you are betrayed, you still like the company you have kept. D.Even if you experience pain and sorrow, you still bear your responsibilities.

1. Moving from high school into college can be especially difficult because of the freedom students experience in college along with a new set of expectations. In high school, students usually live at home, and their parents take care of all their physical needs such as food and housing. 2. Parents are also there to offer help and make sure that the students' homework is done. During the school day, students rarely have free time. They go directly from one class to another. Teachers are always around to tell the students what to do. 3. So students can often complete their homework and reading in a short time. 4. They may be responsible for shopping, paying bills, and laundry. They also may have to cook their own meals. Their parents are not around to help with homework or even to check if it has been done. Contrary to students in high school, students in college may have a lot of free time between classes, but must discipline themselves to use this time productively for homework and other assignments. 5. A.High school students have to bury themselves in piles of papers. B.Finally, the work itself is not so challenging. C.By contrast, in college, students often live away from home in dorms or apartments. D.In college, students may apply to a bank loan and others will try to find parttime jobs. E.Each new level of education brings new challenges and demands to students. F.Most importantly, college requires a higher level of thinking and a lot more work than high school. G.Students do not usually have to shop for their food, take time to pay bills, or even do their own laundry.
LEGO began as one man’s small business. But today, it is the second largest toy company in the world. The LEGO company sells small, brightly colored plastic bricks (积木). People can buy LEGO bricks in over 90 countries. Ole Kirk Kristiansen from Denmark began his own business in 1932. He made products (产品) from wood including colorful wooden toys. Kristiansen’s young son, Godtfred, worked with him. Their business helped them make a lot of money. By 1934, the Kristiansens named their company LEGO, which came from two Danish words, “leg” and “godt”, meaning “play well”. The LEGO company grew slowly. But it continued to create excellent wooden toys. By 1947, the LEGO company began using a new material (材料) to make their toys — plastic. One of the toys they sold was called the Automatic Binding Brick. A person could put the bricks together to build something. But the bricks did not hold together easily. Still, they were a popular toy. A few years later, in 1954, Godtfred Kirk Kristiansen had a big idea. He wanted all of the LEGO bricks to fit together. Finally, four years later, in 1958, the LEGO company found their answer. They invented the first modern style LEGO brick, which was similar to the Automatic Binding Brick but each piece would fit with any other piece. Since that time, any toy that the LEGO company created would fit with any other toy they created. Today, LEGO is not only the second largest toy maker in the world, but also making its products a great way for children to learn creative building skills. 1.When the LEGO company was set up, it ________.
