Informal conversation is an important part of any business relationship. 1.Latin Americans enjoy sharing information about their local history, art, and customs. They expect questions about their family and are sure to show pictures of their children. The French think of conversation as an art form. 2.For them, arguments can be interesting---and they can cover pretty much or any topic---as long as they occur in a respectful and intelligent manner. In the United States, business people like to discuss a wide range of topics, including opinions about work, family, hobbies, and politics. 3.They do not share much about their thoughts, feelings, or emotions because they feel that doing so might take away from the harmonious business relationship they’re trying to build. Middle Easterners are also private about their personal lives and family matters. It is considered rude, for example, to ask a businessman from Saudi Arabia about his wife or children. 4.This can get you into trouble, even in the United States, where people hold different views. Sports is typically a friendly subject in most parts of the world, although be careful not to criticize a national sport.5. A.Instead, be friendly and praise your host’s team. Traditionally, across the world, boys and girls attend a mixed school, where they study together. But boys’ schools are the perfect place to teach young men to express their emotions and involve them in activities such as art, dance and music. Boys at single—sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their emotional expressiveness, rather than feeling they had to correspond to(和……相符)the “boy code” of hiding their emotions to be a “real man”. The findings of the study go against received wisdom that boys do better when taught alongside girls. Tony Little, headmaster of Eton, warmed that boys were being failed by the British education system because it had become too focused on girls. He criticized teachers for failing to recognize that boys are actually more emotional than girls. The research argued that boys often perform badly in mixed schools because they become discouraged when girls do better earlier in speaking and reading skills. But in single-sex schools teachers can tailor lessons to boys’ learning style, letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom, wrote the study’s author, Abigail James, of the University of Virginia. Teachers could encourage boys to enjoy reading and writing with “boy-focused” approaches such as themes and characters that appeal to them. Because boys generally have more acute vision, learn best through touch, and are physically more active, they need to be given “hands-on” lessons where they are allowed to walk around. “Boys in mixed schools view classical music as feminine(女性的)and prefer the modern genre(类型)in which violence and sexism are major themes,” James wrote. Single—sex education also made it less likely that boys would feel that they had to be “masterful and in charge” in relationships. “In mixed schools, boys feel forced to act like men before they understand themselves well enough to know what that means,” the study reported. 1.The author believes that a single-sex school would ________. A.force boys to hide their emotions to be “real men” B.help boys to be more competitive in schools C.encourage boys to express their emotions more freely D.naturally strengthen boys traditional image of a man 2.It is commonly believed that in a mixed school boys ________. A.behave more responsibly B.grow up more healthily C.perform relatively better D.receive a better education 3.According to Abigail James, one of the advantages of single—sex schools is that ________. A.teaching can be tailored to suit the characteristics of boys B.boys can focus on their lessons without being distracted C.boys can choose to learn whatever they are interested in D.teaching can be designed to promote boys' team spirit 4.What does the underlined word “acute” in Paragraph 7 mean? A.lovely.. B.sharp. C.serious. D.dull
If you ever travel to Italy, don't miss a chance to eat the pizza in Rome.At least, that's what Ayonnah Tinsley would probably tell you. "The cheese is totally delicious. In fact I think it is the best cheese there is!" Ayonnah wrote. She wrote this review on a kid-friendly travel website—a website she started herself. And in the past three years, it has taken off like a transatlantic flight. She started a travel blog when she was only eight. The website, called YaYa Stars, grew out of that blog. "YaYa" is Ayonnah's nickname, and" Stars" refers to her five-star rating system. She made the site for kids who want to go to places and kids who have been to places. Ayonnah and her family have travelled a lot. But when she looked for information and reviews about their destinations, she didn't find any that was written by or for kids. At first she just wanted a website where she could write about the places she had visited. But her friends wanted to share their adventures, too. So now, she lets other kids rate the places they've been to as well. " The website has taken off beyond our wildest dreams," said Ayonnah's mother. " We get anywhere between 25,000 and 75,000 unique visitors in a month worldwide. This was all her idea. She was young and that was great for that age and we just gave her our basic support. Ayonnah's website contains shop and restaurant reviews, too—including her views about the pizza in Rome. But she was not as impressed by a restaurant at a major U. S. theme park. She discovered a toothpick inside one of the French fries. However, she did soften the review by calling the restaurant's decoration' wonderful", Ayonnah has a number of other hobbies, but she.still finds time to write and post her reviews. By doing this, you will find hooks that you want to read. Search your house. 2. Maybe you forget one, or someone who is living with you has a couple of good books. By searching your house, you can find books for yourself, and it doesn’t even cost you any money. Ask someone to recommend(推荐) a good book. Searching for airfares often seems like a game that passengers are bound to lose. Prices change from day to day, even minute to minute. Looking through multiple websites for the best deal can be a big challenge. Even when you do book, there’s no guarantee that you are going to get the best price. “You just don’t know when to pull the trigger It’s not like buying anything else I can think of,” said George Hobica, founder of Airfarewatchdog.com. Harriet Levy paid $179 for a recent round-trip flight on American Airlines between New York and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Sitting just one row behind her, Shirley Harrison paid $215. A few rows back, Ellis and Dianne Traub paid $317 each. There were at least 12 fares on the flight, ranging from $169 to $360. There’s no reason for it, Harrison said. Fares can vary significantly in just a few hours. One Delta flight from New York to Los Angeles jumped from $755 to $1,143 from a Friday to Saturday in late April, then fell to $718 on Sunday. The flight was one of a dozen the Associated Press (美国联合通讯社)followed over three months for a vacation between July 16 and 22. The number one finding: avoid booking tickets on weekends. It’s the most expensive time to buy. There’s no way to guarantee the best fare. But before booking, travelers should pay attention to this additional advice: ● Book on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. That’s when airlines most often offer sales. ● Buy in advance, but not too early. The best time is four to six weeks before traveling. In general, prices for any given flight are highest eight to ten weeks and two to three weeks in advance. ● Make use of social media. Airlines are giving more benefits like exclusive (独家) sales to travelers who interact (互动) with them on Twitter and Facebook. Those specials are often gone within hours. ● The so-called discount airlines – JetBlue, Air-Tran, Southwest and Frontier – adjust their fares less frequently than other airlines, so you can feel more confident that the price will stay the same. But their prices aren’t always the lowest. Researching multiple airlines’ fares is the only way to get a good deal. 1.What can we infer from the first sentence of the text? A.Passengers are unable to search for airfares. B.Airlines often play games with passengers. C.Airfares are set in different situations. D.It’s difficult for passengers to get the best price. 2.The underlined phrase “pull the trigger” in Paragraph 3 probably means _______. A.start searching B.get the highest price C.make a purchase D.get on board the plane 3.By using a lot of figures, the author intends to _______. A.show there is standard price for every single airline B.discover the rules behind airfares C.guarantee passengers a low price D.prove airfares can vary widely 4.Passengers are advised to book flights _______. A.in the middle of the week B.on special websites C.several months before traveling D.with airlines which are famous for offering discount prices
Peter Ripken loves literature and reads books by writers all over the world. He learned years ago that not all nations permit writers to express themselves freely. In fact, free expression can be quite dangerous in many places. So, Ripken decided to act. He helped establish an organization, the International Cities of Refuge Network (ICORN), to protect writers. Its founders sought to persuade cities, not central governments, to give refuge to persecuted(受迫害的)writers. He was involved right from the beginning, from the mid-1990s, to set up this program. Originally, he had a different view of his future as a young man. He thought of becoming a bookseller because of his reading obsession when he was 15. But he did not become a bookseller. Instead, in the late 1960s, Ripken began a five year stint as a manager in an aid organization working in Africa. But his love for the written word remained strong. He then worked for three years as a deputy editor for the Africa section at the Voice of Germany. Despite his love for the job, when asked to join an organization promoting African, Asian and Latin American literature, Ripken didn’t hesitate. He had fun travelling to literature conferences and holding workshops with publishers and authors. That’s why he did the job for 20 years. Ripken grew up reading German authors. But his interest broadened to other European and American literature. Then, he found what he called books "outside the norm(常态)". This helped grow his interest in political developments in other regions. In 2016,Ripken retired after several years as ICORN’s chairman. But he is still active in the organization. His goal is to increase the group’s capacity to protect and promote writers and artists at risk around the world. He said he hoped to be remembered as somebody who had promoted creativity and supported literature as a political tool and source of enjoyment. 1.What’s the role of Ripken in the development of ICORN? A.A monitor. B.A co-founder. C.A consultant. D.An analyst. 2.What might Ripken work as in 1975? A.A bookseller. B.A manager. C.A deputy editor. D.A staff in ICORN. 3.What contributes to Ripken’s active involvement in ICORN? A.He grew up reading German authors. B.He loved travelling and meeting people. C.He’s obsessed with literature all over the world. D.He concerned himself about political developments via literature. 4.What might be talked about in the paragraph following the passage? A.Why politics influences literature. B.Why literature itself is a pleasure. C.How ICORN has become so international. D.How people read works of literature "outside the norm".

Last week, Vodafone started a test of the UK’s first full 5G service, available for use by businesses in Salford. It is part of its plan to trial the technology in seven UK cities. But what can we expect from the next generation of mobile technology? One thing we will see in the preparation for the test is lots of tricks with the new tech. Earlier this year, operators paid almost £1.4 billion for the 5G wavelengths, and to compensate for that cash, they will need to catch the eye of consumers. In September, Vodafone used its bit of the range to display the UK’s first hologram (全息) call. The Manchester City captain Steph Houghton appeared as a hologram in Newbury. It isn’t all holograms, however: 5G will offer faster internet access. with Ofcom (英国通讯管理局) suggesting that video that takes a minute to download on 4G will be available in just a second. The wider application is to support connected equipment on the “internet of things” -not just the internet-enabled fridge that can reorder your milk for you, but the network that will enable driverless cars and delivery drones (无人机) to communicate with each other. Prof William Webb has warned that the technology could be a case of the emperor’s new clothes. Much of the speed increase, he claims, could have been achieved by putting more money in the 4G network, rather than a new technology. Other different voices have suggested that a focus on rolling out wider rural broadband access and addressing current network coverage would be more beneficial to the UK as a whole. Obviously, 5G will also bring a cost to consumers. It requires a handset for both 5G and 4G, and the first 5G-enabled smart phones are expected in the coming year. With the slow pace of network rollout so far, it is likely that consumers will end up upgrading to a new 5G phone well before 5G becomes widely available in the next couple of years. 1.Why does Prof William Webb say “the technology could be a case of the emperor’s new clothes”? A.He is in favor of the application of the new technology. B.5G will bring a cost to consumers in their daily life. C.5G helps people communicate better with each other. D.He prefers more money to be spent on 4G networks. 2.The underlined word “addressing” in the fourth paragraph has the closest meaning to . A.making a speech to B.trying to solve C.managing to decrease D.responding to 3.The last paragraph indicates that . A.it’ll take several years to make 5G accessible to the public in the UK B.5G service shows huge development potential and a broad market C.customers are eager to use 5G smart phones instead of 4G ones D.it’s probable that 5G network rollout is speeding up in Britain 4.What do we know about the text? A.Vodafone is successful in spreading the 5G service. B.Steph Houghton appeared as a hologram by 4G . C.The application of 5G will make life much easier. D.5G phones are available in rural areas of the UK.
Almost every college and university in the US now offers some forms of Internet–based application. However, students may miss a lot when they only use Internet information to make their college decisions. Some people believe that the best way to get a detailed look at what life is like at any college or university is by visiting the campus. At present, school visits are becoming popular in the US. Most students begin visiting colleges and universities that they are interested in before their final year of high school. The majority of colleges and universities let interested students visit their campuses at any time of a year. Students can contact the admission offices of the schools that interest them. Current students usually lead the tours. Their job is to provide information, offer advice and show future students different parts of the campus, such as housing and classrooms. During the visit, students should also try to plan a meeting with an admission official. Most schools keep a record of all the exchanges they have with candidates. Trying to meet with officials in person to ask them questions shows interest on the part of the applicant, which schools like to see. It’s never too early to visit a school. This could be years before they even start thinking about the application process. Simply witnessing the college experience in real life can be helpful for young people. That is why some applicants even bring younger brothers and sisters with them on visits. However, visiting schools may not be a choice appropriate to everyone, especially international (国际的)students, so for students who are unable to visit, there is one additional resource: social media. Many schools use Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat to advertise themselves. Schools will permit students to post videos and pictures that show what their daily lives are like at college. These can provide applicants with a view that is almost as good as being there in person. 1.What’s the most common way to apply for a college? A.By visiting the campus. B.By surfing the Internet. C.By writing a letter. D.By making a call. 2.Who are more likely to offer information to the visiting students? A.Admission officials. B.Volunteers. C.Students at school. D.Graduates. 3.Which word can replace the underlined word “appropriate” in the last paragraph? A.Suitable. B.Familiar. C.Equal. D.Related. 4.What’s the purpose of the text? A.To give some advice. B.To show a phenomenon. C.To compare the changes. D.To attract more students.
My husband and I recently went to Disney World with our children and grandchildren. We had a wonderful time and made lots of sweet memories together, but unexpectedly, I learned something as we made our way through the parks. Our four grandchildren were excited about the attraction where children can drive the cars. Since our party was uneven (不均匀的) in numbers and two people fit in each car, I sat out that one and headed down to get pictures of everyone as they drove past on the track. As I waited for my gang to drive by, I noticed a car with a father and his son who looked to be about 7. They rolled down the hill at the beginning, and then the car stopped. The young driver looked panicked, “I can’t do it.” His father quietly said, “Yes, you can.” “No. I can’t!” “Yes, you can, son.” The little guy was almost in tears, “I CAN’T!” With deep patience, the father said, “Son, you can do this. I’m going to help you.” Then he talked him through pushing the gas pedal (油门踏板) and driving the car. Mere moments later with the father helping his son, the two went smoothly on their way down the track. The scene brought tears to my eyes. That sweet whispered to my soul, “Yes, you can”. Then every time things got hard or when I had failures along the way, I would think “You can”. Time and time again, the words patiently encouraged me on the journey. That’s where the true strength comes in. I am aware that I can not do things under my own power, but the words “Yes, you can” come beside me and provide wisdom and strength. There’s no way I can fail. Are you struggling with something today? Have the “I can’t” moments taken over? You can trust the words “Yes, you can”. 1.What did the author think of her family’s trip to Disney World? A.Surprising. B.Disappointing. C.Satisfying. Emergencies can happen anytime, so being prepared for a home first aid kit(成套工具) is important for your family. Having a proper one in your home is an easy but necessary part of good emergency preparation. Pick a good container One good choice is a large translucent plastic container, which makes it easy to see the materials inside. Lunchboxes are also another good choice. Basically, if it’s big enough, and at least somewhat water resistant, it can make a good container. Regardless of your container choice, it should be easy to recognize, so write “FIRST AID” on it with a marker. Teach your family about the kit For younger children who shouldn’t use the items in the kit, teach them where it’s located, so they could show a visitor, relative or babysitter. For older children and adults, instruct them on how to use the items in it. Use a first aid instruction booklet, like those available from the American Red Cross for guidance and place a booklet in the kit for reference. Keep your kit up–to–date No one wants to fetch a first aid kit and find the bandage box empty or the pain relievers expired (过期了的). Keep track of supply amounts and expiration dates regularly. Create a checklist in the kit Record every item on a sheet of paper and keep it in the kit. Besides, record the amounts of the items and expiration dates next to the listed items on the checklist that you include in your kit. In this way, anyone who wants to reach the kit can immediately know what it includes and doesn’t include. Also, they can be clear whether the items can be used. 1.Which is close to the meaning of the underlined word “translucent”? A.Wide. B.Advanced. C.Clear. D.Strong. 2.What should the young children be told about the home first aid kit? A.How to use the items. B.What it contains. C.Where to place it. D.When to fetch it. 3.Why should the home first aid kit be examined regularly? A.To make it clean and tidy. B.To make sure it’s available. C.To be familiar with the items. D.To learn to deal with emergencies.

Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. Most of us — even those at the top — struggle with public-speaking anxiety. When I ask my clients what makes them nervous, invariably they respond with the same answers: “I don’t like being watched”, “I don’t like the eyes on me” or “I don’t like being in the spotlight”. To understand why, we need to go way back to prehistoric times, when humans regarded eyes watching us as an existential threat. Those eyes were likely predators (肉食动物) and people were terrified of being eaten alive. The bad news is that our brains have transferred the ancient fear of being watched into public speaking. In other words, public-speaking anxiety is in our DNA. Fortunately, there is a solution: human generosity. The key to disarming our panic button is to turn the focus away from ourselves and toward helping the audience. Studies have shown that an increase in generosity indeed leads to a decrease in amygdala (扁桃腺) activity, which is responsible for our panic feeling in the brain. When we are kind to others, we overcome the sense of being under attack and start to feel less nervous. Admittedly, this is hard to do. But it’s absolutely possible to become a generous speaker. To begin with, when you start preparing for a presentation, the mistake you often make is starting with the topic. Instead, you should start with the audience. Identify the audience’s needs, and craft a message that speaks directly to those needs. Also, you are the most nervous right before you speak. This is the moment when your brain is telling you, “Everyone is judging me.” But it is exactly the moment when you should refocus your brain. Over time, your brain will begin to get it, and you will become less nervous.
Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. South Africa still has a long way to go on the right to food Fifty-four percent of South Africans are hungry or at risk of hunger. Hunger affects people’s health, as well as their ability to live full and productive lives because the rights to dignity, health and education are affected by hunger. 1. There are significant race, class and gender differences. For example, black South Africans are 22 times more likely to be food insecure compared with white South Africans. Food insecurity is defined as not having physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. This unequal distribution indicates a situation of severe food injustice in South Africa. Yet from the research with urban farmers it’s clear that people do not know of the right to food, and don’t see unequal access to nutritious food as an injustice. 2.While there are frequent protests around access to jobs, education, housing, water and electricity, we rarely, if ever, see protests about access to food. One of the drivers of unequal access to food is the way in which the industrial food system works. For example, a few large companies dominate each aspect of the food value chain. 3. Because the large companies dominate the supply chain, they are able to maximize profits at the expense of small-scale producers, to whom they pay very low prices. 4.It needs to ensure that marginalized producers, processors and retailers have an opportunity to earn a decent living. At the same time corporate dominance needs to be addressed. Anyway, at the most basic level, it requires that South Africans know they have a right to food in the first place. A. As a result, questions of hunger are largely absent in South African politics. B. Handling food injustice requires a transformation of the undesirable structure of the food system. C. Therefore, the government has put forward numerous food and nutrition security programs to fight against hunger. D. This means that smaller scale producers, processors and retailers are squeezed out. E. Hunger, lack of nutrition and related illnesses are not equally spread. F. There are international examples of governments taking their obligations seriously with regard to the right to food.
A tiny clue found in ancient deposits has unlocked big secrets about Greenland’s past and future climate. Just beyond the northwest edge of the vast Greenland Ice Sheet, researchers have discovered lake mud that have survived the last ice age. The mud, and remains of common flies in it, record two interglacial periods(间冰期)in northwest Greenland. Although researchers have long known these two periods—the early Holocene and Last Interglacial—experienced warming in the Arctic, the mix of fly species shows that Greenland was even warmer than previously thought. “As far as we know, it has never been found in Greenland. We think this is the first time anyone has reported it in ancient deposits or modern lakes there,” Axford said. “We were really surprised to see how far north it migrated (迁徙).” This new information could help researchers better measure Greenland’s sensitivity to warming, by testing and improving models of climate and ice sheet behaviour. Those models could then improve predictions of how Greenland’s ice sheet might respond to man-made global warming. After all, Greenland covers 80 per cent of the Arctic country and holds enough ice to equal 20 feet of global sea level. “Northwest Greenland might feel really remote, but what happens to that ice sheet is going to matter to everyone in every coastal city around the world,” said Yarrow Axford, an associate professor in the team. “One of the big uncertainties in climate science is how fast the Earth changes when it gets warmer. Geology gives us an opportunity to see what happened when the Earth was warmer than today,” said Axford. People might be surprised to see how today’s Greenland looked during the last two interglacial periods. During the Last Interglacial, global sea levels increased by 15 to 30 feet, largely due to thinning of Greenland and Antarctica’s ice sheets. However, now researchers believe northern Greenland’s ice sheet experienced stronger warming than previously thought, which could mean that Greenland is more responsible for that sea-level rise. Finding lake deposits older than about 10,000 years, however, has been historically very difficult in Greenland. To measure these ancient temperatures, researchers look to ice cores (冰核) and lake deposits. Since ice and lake deposits form by a gradual buildup on annual layers of snow or mud, these cores contain history of the past. By looking through the layers, researchers can obtain climate clues from centuries ago. 1.Why are the remains of flies mentioned in the first two paragraphs? A.They serve as evidence that there is still life in the Northwest Greenland. B.They were one of the many ancient lives that were left in the Greenland mud. C.They are indicators that Greenland was much warmer than previously thought. D.They help the researchers realize that there was once a warm period in the Arctic. 2.The new information about Greenland is important because______________. A.researchers have no idea how to measure Greenland’s warming speed B.it can help researchers better predict Greenland’s response to warming C.people should be more sensitive to the changes in the ice in Greenland D.it is uncertain how fast the Earth changes with man-made global warming 3.Which of the following can be inferred from the passage? A.It is easier for today’s scientists to find ancient lake deposits. B.People are surprised at the landscape feature of Greenland today. C.Researchers measure the changing temperatures by directly examining mud. D.Greenland holds enough ice that might one day threaten life in coastal cities. 4.Which do you think is the best title of the passage? A.Greenland Used to Be Much Greener B.Earth Once Experienced Warm Periods C.Coastal Cities Warned of Coming Disasters D.Northwest Greenland, A Perfect Destination

When she was ten years old, Isadora Duncan dropped out of school to teach people dance. If that job was left to any other ten-year-old, it would have turned out frustrating, difficult, and a little discouraging.
But Duncan was different. Not only was she already talented enough to earn money even at that age, but she also had a rare kind of confidence that helped her treat troubles as fuel —something to elevate the fire that is already burning inside of her. It’s no surprise, then, that when she moved to New York to join a theatre company, she found herself restricted. The existing dancing style, their way of operating—all of this seemed to her the work of a misguided past. Duncan was very direct about what she wanted, confidently telling people she had a different vision of dance that she was going to spread in the world. This, naturally, led to ridicule and laughs early on, but as she built up her work, these instances became less frequent. Today, she is remembered as “The Mother of Dance,” with much of the modern art owing its expressive style to her influence. Inspired by the ancient Greeks, she brought the style to life. In her autobiography (自传), one of the things Duncan frequently refers to as the basis of her expressive spirit is the fact that she had a childhood where she wasn’t constantly watched. The expectations of her mother (who raised her) were open-ended. It was the freedom of this lifestyle that drove her to see what she could do. Growing up, before she left school, she was told one of two things: that she was either completely useless or that she was a genius. There was nothing in between. Even when she started working, people either bowed to her or they basically ignored her. But there wasn’t one moment Duncan doubted her own genius. There is an old quotation “if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” And it captures an important truth. At school, Isadora Duncan was a failure. In the dance hall, she gave form to brilliance. 1.What does the underlined phrase “treat troubles as fuel” mean? A.Duncan used troubles to push her forward towards her dream. B.Duncan was good at burning away everyday troubles. C.Troubles turned Duncan into a confident girl. D.Troubles lit the fire of dancing in Duncan. 2.Which of the following is TRUE about Duncan? A.Her experience in New York was the foundation of her career. B.Her teaching job when she was little destroyed her confidence. C.Her dancing style was not very well received at the beginning. D.Her mother set higher expectation on her than she could bear. 3.What does the author try to tell the readers in the last paragraph? A.It is useless climbing a tree to catch fish. B.Everybody is a genius in his own way. C.Miseries come from human stupidity. D.Teachers can impact students greatly. 4.What is this passage mainly about? A.Isadora Duncan’s childhood and her achievements today. B.Duncan’s career development and other dancers’ opinions of her. C.Isadora Duncan’s early experiences and the reasons for her success. D.Duncan’s high status in the dancing world and her unique expressive style.
Researchers find that in new product design, connecting with users’ heart, rather than their head, can lead to more original and creative outcomes. Developing original and _______ products is critical to a company’s long-term success. Thus, understanding what influences originality can have important and potentially _______ consequences for businesses. Ravi Mehta, a professor of business administration, shows that adopting a(n) _______ that imagines how the user would feel while using a product leads designers to experience greater empathy(同感), which _______ creativity and, in turn, outcome originality for new product design. There are two ways that the product designer can _______ the consumer’s product usage. One focuses on objective use of the product—how consumers might use the product, that is, an “objective –imagination” approach. The other focuses on feelings—how the product makes the consumer feel, a “feelings-imagination” approach. Consumers always want to have new products that solve problems more efficiently and at a less cost. So product designers _______ this trap of being very objective in focusing on the use of a product. That’s important, but the _______ of usage can only attract consumers in some ways._______, the feelings-imagination approach leads designers to experience greater empathy, which makes them more _______ to the consumers’ ideas. This leads to greater outcome originality. Mehta said, “when you imagine consumers and focus on their feelings, that’s powerful and will lead to something much more innovative than only focusing on a product’s usage.” The research shows that a feelings-based approach is _______ to the commonly used objective-based approach, the researchers wrote. It not only helps product designers build a better product, but it also helps them create more innovative products. The implications of the findings extend to everyday consumers, who now play a role in shaping companies’ design. Mehta said, “Marketers are increasingly _______ consumers for new product ideas.”_______, there was a very successful campaign a few years ago that focused on getting consumers to create a new potato chip flavor. The experiments demonstrated a _______effect of adopting a feelings-imagination approach. That suggests that these designers may _______ imagining users’ feelings. In this way, designers can develop products that could _______ to the masses. Companies can easily adopt this process and promote feelings-imagination exercises through their websites or social media. 1.A.primary B.innovative C.natural D.domestic 2.A.temporary B.slight C.indefinite D.profitable 3.A.policy B.proposal C.approach D.standard 4.A.enhances B.exhibits C.illustrates D.explores 5.A.recommend B.extend C.exploit D.imagine 6.A.fall apart B.figure out C.fall into D.turn into 7.A.originality B.objectivity C.creativity D.flexibility 8.A.In conclusion B.In addition C.As a result D.By contrast 9.A.open B.harmful C.resistant D.equal 10.A.evident B.superior C.relevant D.alert 11.A.joining in B.applying to C.turning to D.taking in 12.A.In reality B.In other words C.What’s more D.For example 13.A.dramatic B.positive C.negative D.serious 14.A.depend on B.benefit from C.contribute to D.involve in 15.A.appeal B.refer C.adapt D.commit
