It happens all the time: during an airport delay, a Korean perhaps starts talking to a man who might be Colombian, and soon they are chatting away in what seems to be English. But the native English speaker sitting beside them cannot understand a word.

They don’t know they are speaking Globish, the latest addition to the 6,800 languages that are said to be spoken across the world. Not that its inventor, Jean-Paul Nerriere, considers it a proper language. “It is not a language, but it is a tool, ” he says. “A language is the vehicle of a culture. Globish doesn’t want to be that at all. It is a means of communication.”

The seeds for Globish came about in the 1980’s when Nerriere was working for IBM in Paris with colleagues of about 40 nationalities. At a meeting where they were to be addressed by two Americans whose flight had been delayed, they started chatting. Then the Americans arrived and beyond their opening phrases, “Call me Jim, ”“Call me Bill, ”no one understood a word. And Jim and Bill, needless to say, did not understand the strange English spoken by others. They all spoke low-quality English. Except Jim and Bill, everyone was speaking Globish though they didn’t know it.

The main principles of Globish are a vocabulary of only 1,500 words in English, gestures and repetition. One of the interesting things in Globish is that with 1,500 words you can express everything. The target is to reach the point where you will be understood everywhere. The list goes from “able” to “zero”. “Niece and nephew, for example, are not included, but you can replace them with the children of my brother, ” Nerriere says.

But a small problem is still waiting for him. The fluent Globish speakers will not be understood by native English speakers. To this question, Nerriere responded confidently, “This is the way to get Americans to learn another language. ”

3.How can Globish speakers communicate beyond the Globish vocabulary?

A.They might use French words instead.

B.They might use body language.

Next time you’re in a public place, take a look around you, and count how many people are using their phones. I can tell you now that it is probably more than half, whether you’re on public transport, in a cafe or simply walking down the street.

I’m not saying that I am not an example of this, but it always amazes me how people can spend so much time on their phones without actually talking to anyone in particular.

For example, I recently visited London and travelled on the tube while I was there. Apart from the people asleep, almost everybody else was on their phones, and because of the nature of the tube, it is difficult not to see exactly what they are all doing. Of course, being underground it is difficult for you to get any signal, which rules out texting or using the Internet, but there is still plenty you can use your phones for. People were playing games, reading articles and listening to music, and I am sure that as soon as they emerged from the train station they would start texting or calling or checking their emails.

Recently, my smartphone broke and had to be sent off to the warehouse for repair for a week or so. In the meantime I had to use a really old, basic phone just to keep me in touch with my family and friends. All I could do on this phone was send text messages, make calls and play one game. And I loved it. I loved being free from the Internet, and I really didn’t mind not having constant updates about what my friends were doing or what the latest celebrity story was. It allowed me to spend more lime taking in my surroundings.

However, I knew that as soon as I got my smartphone hack I would be one of those people once again. Perhaps I should just go back to using the basic phone and forget my smartphone.

1.Why are you asked to look around in Paragraph 1?

A.To ensure your safety.

B.To communicate with people.

C.To count the people around you.

D.To count the number of people using the phones.

2.What were many people on the tube in London probably doing?

A.Using mobile apps.

B.Talking with each other.

C.Reading printed books.

D.Checking social network sites.

3.What did the author think of having to use his basic phone?

A.He felt great actually.

B.He found it very inconvenient.

C.He couldn’t see much difference,

D.He felt terrible at first but better later.

4.What does the underlined part “those people” in the last paragraph refer to?

A.People without mobiles.

B.People using basic phones.

C.People using smartphones reasonably.

D.People spending a lot of time on mobiles.

Competition is a common phenomenon in our social life. 1. There is constant competition for academic degrees, jobs, customers, money and so forth. In a sense, competition is one of the motive forces to the development of society.

2. Therefore, the only way to survive is to be competitive. Growing in a competitive environment is important for a child because future adult life is difficult. Finding a good job, for example, is an extremely competitive activity.

Today, most people obtain knowledge through various ways and a large number of people get good education. 3.The quality of people is rapidly increasing. Competition is more violent than what we thought it should be. The potentially successful job applicant has to be prepared in stronger position by gaining more qualifications and experience. In the sports contests, the strongest will come out as winners. In the business world, to beat your competitors, you must be better than the other employees. 4.

Though the only way our world rewards people is to give honor to the winners, not to the losers, by attempting to compete at different activities, we can still learn to win and lose, gain experience and know our strengths and weaknesses. Competition prepares us for the tough things in life.

Whether in games, in study or in business alike, the aim is to win the game, the degree, the trophy, and the contract. 5.

A. Otherwise, you will be defeated.

B. Modern society demands high-quality talents.

C. Learning to be competitive is clearly the best preparation for life.

D. There are also many people who have higher degrees in their special fields.

E. Children have to learn to be competitive in order to adapt to modern society.

F. In the natural world, the weak will be replaced by the strong and the fittest can live.

G. We compete when we play games and when we try to do better than others in our study.

When students got their textbooks at the beginning of the year at San Mateo High School, they also received the Yondr pouch Youdr (口袋), a locking device for their phones. The phone slides into it and gets locked through a magnetic (磁力的) device. It’s not unlocked again until the final bell rings. The procedure will repeat every day for the rest of the school year.

Adam Gelb, the vice-president, ran a pilot project last year with 20 students and decided to do a school-wide, bell to bell program for this school year. The Yondr pouch is a start-up in San Francisco with a mission to create phone-free spaces, something that is the very thought with Gelb.

“I really think it’s about being present and engaging in the adult that’s trying to teach you, and your peers that might be in your small group. That’s part of the main philosophy that we're trying to spread,” he said.

Brad Friedman, another teacher at the school, said he was becoming concerned with overuse of phones at school. He said he often saw students completely lost on their phones, some not socializing at all with other students.

This week, he’s already seeing the difference. “Everyone else was socializing and eating lunch together. That’s what I wasn’t seeing enough of when phone usage is at its worst,” he said.

A senior at San Mateo High School Djelani Phillips-Diop said he definitely panicked at first when he heard he had to lock his phone. “I panicked, I guess. Last year when we had phones, I was using it every day,” he said.

In case of emergency, every classroom has the unlocking device. Teachers still have access to their own cellphones and desk phones. “We’ve gotten all 1,700 students unlocked with a matter of minutes,” said Gelb.

We spoke to four students who, despite their initial panic, agreed that a phone-free school experience has its benefits.

1.What can we learn about the Yondr pouch from paragraph 1?

A.It is a device to lock phones. B.It is a bell to unlock phones.

C.It is a device to be used for a year. D.It is a phone intended for students.

2.The Youdr pouch is used more in Gelb’s school to ______________________.

A.create space to use phones freely

B.help the students to be more outgoing

C.encourage more mutual communication among students

D.help the students to realize the harm of overuse of phones

3.What is Friedman’s attitude to the use of the Yondr pouch ?

A.Concerned. B.Favorable.

C.Disapproving. D.Doubtful.

4.What can be learned from the passage?

A.The students were willing to have their phones locked at first.

B.The phone will get unlocked automatically when there is an emergency

C.Students prefer eating lunch together with their phones in hand.

D.Some students came to realize the benefits of the phone-free program.

Chinese Culture Shown to the World with Love

Li Ziqi, a short video blogger specializing in traditional Chinese cooking and handicrafts, has gained worldwide popularity.

Li has about 20 million followers on Sina Weibo, China’s equivalent to Twitter, plus 7 million followers on overseas social media networks. Many foreigners say they have got to know traditional Chinese food culture via her channel.

It is the spirit of craftsmanship (技艺) behind her works that makes Li’s video clips attractive. She strictly follows the authentic traditional steps and procedures in making traditional Chinese food and handicrafts, such as peach flower wine and silk, and goes to great lengths to ensure her videos are accurate. Sometimes she spends several months producing one of her videos.

Li has been inheriting (继承) traditional Chinese culture in a rather creative way. A closer look at her videos will show that they are never with any “analysis” that makes people feel bored. They just show audiences each and every detail of traditional Chinese culture so that the latter knows how Chinese live their beautiful and elegant lives. It is that universal appeal that makes her works so attractive. Thanks to Li's efforts, many intangible cultural heritages that only existed in memories and written records now appear before our eyes. Via her short videos, Li presents the image of a beautiful and friendly China.

With the growth of the Chinese economy, people overseas are showing more interest in traditional Chinese culture. Li has shown how to satisfy that interest in a good way, namely showing the best parts of traditional Chinese culture with her heart.

My nephew came for a visit one hot, July weekend. I persuaded him to stay inside by joining him in a Nintendo game. After being mercilessly defeated by a more experienced player, I suggested that we relax for a while. He slipped out of the room and I caught a few moments of peace and quiet.

“Look, Alice,” he said enthusiastically as he ran over to the chair where I was recovering. “I found a kite. Could we go outside and fly it?”

Glancing out of a nearby window, I noticed there was not a breeze (微风). “I'm sorry, Tripper,” I said, sad to see his disappointed eyes, but thankful for the short period of rest from more activities. “The wind is not blowing today. The kite won’t fly.”

The determined 10-year-old replied. “I think it’s windy enough. I can get it to fly,” he answered, as he hurried out through the back door. I peeked through the curtains to watch determination in action. Up and down the yard he ran, pulling the kite attached to a small length of string. The plastic kite, proudly displaying a picture of Batman, remained about shoulder level.

He ran back and forth, as hard as his ten-year-old legs would carry him, looking back hopefully at the kite trailing behind. After about ten minutes of unsuccessful determination, he came back in.

I asked, “How did it go?” “Fine,” he said, “I got it to fly some.” As he walked past me to return the kite to the closet shelf, I heard him say under his breath, “I guess I'll have to wait for the wind.”

At that moment I heard another voice speak to my heart. “Alice, sometimes you are just like that. You want to do it your way instead of waiting for the wind.” And the voice was right. We usually want to use our own efforts to accomplish what we want to do. We wait for the wind only after we have done all we can and have exhausted our own strength. We must learn how to rely on Him in the first place!

Different countries have different tipping customs. When you travel, you need to know how to tip in the country that you’re in; otherwise you’ll leave servers angry everywhere you go.Here are just a few guidelines to tipping around the world.

Brazil

There will always be a standard 10% service charge added to your bill, and you won’t necessarily have to tip. If you do feel like being generous, an extra 5-10% will really make your server very happy. Just remember to do this as skillfully as possible—Brazilians don’t make a big show of this.

Dubai

In Dubai it’s a rule for restaurants to charge 10% tip on all restaurant and bar bills. You can add a couple of dirhams(迪拉姆,货币单位)to this if you feel like it. Waiters are not paid very much in Dubai, so it is always very appreciated.

Germany

German bars and restaurants will include the tip as part of what you owe, but that’s not all you have to pay. It is a custom to round the bill up after that, usually to the euro. This can be anywhere from 5-10%. When it’s time to settle up, you won’t get a bill: your waiter tells you the total and then you tell them how much you want to pay, including your “tip”, and hand over the money.

Czech Republic

While locals in the Czech Republic don’t leave tips, that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook.Foreign tourists are definitely expected to leave some kind of tip for service—as long as you’re in a high tourist traffic area, like Prague for instance. The standard tip is 10%.

India

If you like the service, go ahead and tip your server 5-10%. You have to adjust that amount though, based on how big the meal you’re eating is. If the bill is for a small meal, and totals less than 300 rupees, tip the full 10%. If the bill is higher, tip towards the 5%.

1.In which country do customers have to tip at least 10% for the service?

A.Dubai B.India

C.Germany D.Czech Republic

2.Which country has different tip cultures between citizens and foreigners?

A.Dubai B.Germany

C.India D.Czech Republic

3.If your bill is 2000 rupees in India, it is proper for you to tip________ rupees.

A.10 B.80

C.120 D.200

As it is known to all, the Great Wall is the most famous places of interest in China. Everybody wants to go there, but I am no exception. Then, this summer vacation, the day I have been looking forward to coming at last. I got up very early that day and set off with my brother Tim followed behind. After two hours’ bus ride, we arrived at which looked like the large market, where there were millions of people talking, pushing and photographing. At that, my enthusiasm immediate disappeared. Indeed, the Great Wall is really something must be experienced with a little ease and privacy.

BE A GOOD TOURIST

Tourism can be both good and bad. Yes, it brings in money for the local economy and creates lots of jobs for locals, but it may also bring some problems.

1. Tourists have used paint, rocks, or even keys to write on the Luxor Temple in Egypt, the Colosseum in Rome, Stonehenge in the UK, memorial stones at the bottom of Qomolangma, and many, many other places. Thousands of tourists sites are being destroyed by tourists who “love them to death”. 2. If you want to leave a mark on the world, do it by changing someone’s life with kindness and love. Pass kindness along to future generations, not destruction.

Another big problem in some places has been tourists disturbing the local people and life. 3. For example, Chiang Mai University in Thailand and Yonsei University in South Korea have great numbers of tourists visiting their campuses and walking through their libraries and other public areas, taking pictures of students and disturbing their studies. I have three words for tourists like this: please be considerate. 4.

The number of problems from tourists is endless: walking in large groups without considering others who need to walk by, crossing roads without observing local traffic laws, and many more. The only way to solve the issue of the terrible tourist is to make sure that you are not one! 5. Remember, whenever you step outside your country’s borders, you are representing your country to the rest of the world.

A. Just think from other aspects.

B. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

C. Have fun in a way that does not disturb others.

D. Be the best, kindest, most polite tourist possible.

E. I have three words for people like this: please stop it.

F. One growing problem is tourists who want to prove that they have visited someplace.

G. Some tourists wander around and take pictures of local people without asking for their permission.

I arrived in my Chinese classroom, ready to share my vast knowledge and experience with the 75 students who would be my English Literature class. Having taught in the USA for 17 years, I had no worry at all about my ability to plant in my students enthusiasm for the literature of my mother tongue.

I was really shocked when the monitor shouted “Stand up” and the entire class rose as I entered the room, and I was somewhat confused and anxious about how to get them to sit down again, but once that embarrassment was over, I quickly calmed down and launched into what I thought was a fact-packed lecture, sure to gain their respect-perhaps even their admiration. I went back to my room radiating that rosy glow (光泽) that comes from a sense of significant accomplishment.

My students kept journals, however, and as I read them, the rosy glow was gradually replaced by an overwhelming sense of frustration. The first journal said, “Our literature teacher didn’t teach us anything today. Perhaps her next lecture will be better.” Heartbroken, I read journal after journal, each expressing a similar theme. Didn’t teach them anything? I sketched the entire philosophical framework of thought AND laid the historical background for all the works we’ll study in class.” I complained, “How can they say I didn't teach them anything?”

Determined to clear myself, I dug out all my reference books, adding background material to my next lecture, researching into the sociological setting and even the psychological state of the author. After the second class, I eagerly opened the journals, expecting enthusiastic reviews at last. Again, I was crushed by their continuing comments that I was going too slowly without giving meaningful details.

More determined than ever. I dived into sources of criticism, deciding to devote more time to the texts by providing summaries of all the interpretations I could find of each work. This material would give my students ample information for drawing their own conclusions about the work’s meaning, “Our teacher seems confused about the real meaning of the works,” the journals said. “One minute she gives one interpretation; the next minute she gives another. Then she asks for our opinions. We’re the students. She’s the teacher. She should tell us what the works mean.”

It was a long semester, and it gradually became clear to me that my ideas about education were purely Western, and that Chinese ideas differed significantly. I thought a teacher’s job was to raise interesting questions and provide enough background so that students could draw their own conclusions. My students thought a teacher’s job was to provide accurate information as directly and concisely as possible. Americans wanted to interpret and experience. The Chinese wanted to master and memorize.

Lego is considering a brick (积木) rental plan in an attempt to cut down on plastic waste. The Danish toymaker has promised to make all its bricks from sustainable (可持续的) sources by 2030 and is investing significant resources into finding alternatives.

Tim Brooks, vice-president responsible for sustainability, said the company was “totally open” to the idea of a product rental plan but admitted that lost pieces could produce a significant problem. “What are the chances of giving them to an eight-year-old child and getting them all back again?” Mr. Brooks added.

“There is a lot of technical thinking that needs to be done. We are right at beginning of that.” Mr. Brooks said Lego was exploring several ideas with a view to producing the highest value from products while consuming the least amount of resources. He said many would “probably never see the light of day” and there was no current plan to try out a rental plan.

Lego has come under increasing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint among growing international alarm about the impact of plastic waste on the environment. It produces 19 billion pieces per year—36, 000 a minute—that are made entirely of plastic while much of the inside packaging is also plastic.

So far, the only breakthrough has been the development of a line of bricks made from plant-based plastic sourced from sugarcane. The green trees, plants and flowers were first included in Lego sets late last year but make up only 1%-2% of the total amount of plastic elements produced. Henrik Nielson, a production supervisor (主管) in Lego’s factory, said last year: “We need to learn again how to do this.”

Lego reportedly releases around a million tons of carbon dioxide each year, with about 75% coming from raw materials that go into factories. The company has invested more than 100, 000,000 euros and hired 100 people to research non-plastic alternatives. It is aiming to keep all of its packaging out of landfill by 2025.

1.Lego is making great efforts to ________.

A.promote its brick rental plan B.raise its production efficiency

C.explore ways to reduce plastic waste D.develop new products

2.According to Mr. Brooks, Lego’s brick rental plan ________.

A.is well under way B.has a long way to go

C.is totally useless D.goes against Lego’s interest

3.The writer tells of Lego’s stress of reducing plastic waste by means of ________.

A.figures B.examples

C.comparison D.classification

4.What is Lego’s attitude towards developing non-plastic alternatives?

A.Defensive. B.Determined.

C.Disapproving. D.Doubtful.

I always wanted to be extraordinary at something. Not just as in,”Great job, Jimbo!” No, I wanted to be best-in-class, awe-inspiring, tiptop; a world-famous genius, like Michael Phelps or Mark Zuckerberg.

Unfortunately, my version of reality did not quite line up with this delusional vision. I was a good swimmer, but I peaked at the collegiate State Championships level. My academic record was pretty solid, but I never would have made it into one of those ivy-league schools.

Though I rose to above-average status in a couple of areas, the disappointing truth was that I would never amount to anything more than a mid-sized fish in a small pond. God apparently had other plans.

What drove me crazy, though, was the superstar talent thrown in my face at every turn. Some folks just seemed to get an unfair intensive dose(剂量)of it. Why couldn’t I be like Bernie William, the famed New Yorkees player who also happens to be a world-class jazz guitar virtuoso(艺术大师)?

Some say greatness is simply a function of putting in the practice time. Around ten thousand hours, to be precise, according to author Malcolm Gladwell. I don’t question the theory of devoting extraordinary efforts to developing one’s expertise, but it seems that raw talent is equally important. You either have it or you don’t.

I’ve heard that as people approach middle age, their life satisfaction increases because they begin to accept the gap between the expectations for themselves and the reality. After a few decades of frustration without the desired results, we eventually come to terms with how our lives turned out, even if it falls far short of our idealized youthful expectation.

Hope bends, it seems.

1.What does the word “delusional” in Para2 most probably mean?

A.Imaginary B.Realistic C.Abstract D.Practical

2.In the passage, the writer thinks of himself as  .

A.a world-famous genius B.a mid-sized fish in a small pond

C.a world-class virtuoso D.a student in an ivy-league school

3.According to the writer, what makes “greatness”?

A.Extraordinary efforts B.Ten thousand hours of practice C.Raw talent D.Talent and time

4.Which of the following might be the best title ?

A.Hope Bends B.Frustrating Decades

C.Practice Works D.Youthful Expectation

Enjoy the challenge of a new term

The new term is finally here, which means, of course, it's time to return to school.

For many students across China, that also means having to leave home for the next several months and move into a school dormitory.

Being away from our family for a long time, however, often leads to homesickness, a feeling that most students have experienced at some point.

A study by the UK's National Union of Students found that up to 70 percent of UK students living away from home experience homesickness within their first few weeks of being away.

But homesickness isn't just a feeling of sadness that happens in our mind; it can also affect us physically.

“You feel homesickness in your stomach—it's an unease in which you feel uncomfortable, nervous, stressed because you're in a place or situation that's not familiar,” Joshua Klapow, a professor of public heath at the University of Alabama, us, told HuffPost.

According to Klapow, the body reacts physically when it's placed in an unknown situation such as being separated from one's familiar surroundings for a long time.

“It's an evolutionary(进化的) thing that makes us protect ourselves from danger when something is unknown," he told the HuffPost.

“When we think about home, we know that the sense of unknown … is not happening there, so we want to return.”

So, how can we overcome these physical reactions?

Ruth Hardy of the Guardian offered advice for students who are feeling the effects of being away from the safety of home.

“Try and establish routines(常规) quickly. This can make your new environment feel more stable and will hopefully make you feel more settled,” she wrote.

Making friends with others who are in your situation is also a great way to feel less homesick, according to Hardy.

The most important thing to remember, however, is that homesickness is completely normal and is nothing to be ashamed of.

And once it's gone, you're free lo enjoy the adventures and challenges of a brand new school year.

A.show how homesickness causes harm to students

B.prove it's common for students to feel homesick

A.It's only a feeling in our mind.

B.It usually disappears after a few weeks.

C.It has a physical influence on our body.

D.It always happens once we visit an unfamiliar place.

3.According to Klapow, why is homesickness helpful to humans?

A.It shows people the importance of their family.

B.It drives people to get used to changes.

C.It encourages people to express their feelings.

D.It keeps people away from possible dangers.

4.How does Hardy suggest people deal with homesickness?

A.Take part in as many activities as possible.

B.Talk about your problems with your friends.

C.Get into a routine as early as possible.

D.Avoid seeing things related to your home life.

A few weeks ago, I sat with a California farmer named Dave Ribeiro. I asked him what he wished to know about farmers. He smiled and said, “That we walk among you. We look like you and talk like you. We have advanced degrees and hobbies, just like you.”

Take Dave for example: He's a young man with a music degree. And if you walked past him on the street, you'd never think, “There goes a farmer.”

Is someone like Dave who you picture when you think of a farmer? Probably not. I think that most people would picture a man in his overalls(工作服). I can tell you, that does not represent Dave or any of the many other farmers I have gotten to know.

Not only do we have to throw out our previous impression of farmers, but farming as a whole doesn't look much like it used to either. We recently sent a team out to see what modern farming looks like, and they found farmers to be completely different from our usual ideas about them and also came across them in some unexpected places.

In a parking lot in a neighborhood of Brooklyn, they met a new crop of young farmers who were trying to bring fresh greens closer to eaters in the city by growing them in high-tech indoor vertical(垂直的) farms. In a Florida field under the fight path of an airport, they discovered farmers with university degrees growing plants that might someday fuel our cars. And in a modern farm in California, they observed how farmers were using technology to take the best possible care of their animals.

These farmers all spend their days in very different ways—none of them looks like the previous farmer we have in our mind—but they're all working on new ways to feed our planet. Not only do we need to change our idea of what farming looks like, but we also need to change our view of where solutions can come from. Feeding all of us is going to take all of us working together.

1.How does Dave describe today's farmers?

A.They often walk on the street. B.They are leading a very busy life.

C.They are similar to ordinary people. D.They have little time to make friends.

2.How does the author think most people see farmers?

A.They usually wear overalls. B.They have interesting hobbies.

C.They are skilled at growing crops. D.They know modern farming practices.

3.What was the purpose of the team?

A.To deepen connections among farmers.

B.To study different technologies in farming.

C.To find the new developments of modern farming.

D.To encourage farmers to use new farming method.

4.What do the farmers mentioned in Paragraph 5 have in common?

A.They all work in the city.

B.They all use high technology.

C.They all do hard physical work.

D.They all work with universities.

Living life to its fullest

On the night of August 24, 2001, everything changed when my friend's car hit a wall with me inside. I lost most of my right leg, and I was left bleeding with several broken bones. At the hospital, although my body was weak, my mind was still very clear. I just kept telling myself to hold on. A week later, I made a deal with the doctors that once I could roll onto my side, I could leave. Two weeks later, I was allowed to go home.

Although I left the hospital, the fight was far from over. My left knee was badly injured, which resulted in different operations over the next few years.

And soon, more of my right leg had to be removed. This made it harder to wear my false leg, so I donated it to a nurse who couldn't afford one for herself. The joy of being able to provide this gift for someone else was greater than the happiness I felt on any day I was able to wear it myself.

People often tell me they're proud of me for staying strong. But in my mind, staying strong has always been my only choice. So, on the day I left the hospital, I made a promise to myself to always live life to the fullest. Now, I may not be able to do things the way everybody else does them, but still, I always find a way to do them. I soon settled into everyday life again, until one day I realized I wasn't living my life as fully as I wanted to.

After 13 years of thinking that I was confident, I had an unfamiliar feeling sweep over me. For the first time in my life, I was not only confident but I wanted to help those around me.

In 2014, I even started modeling. My dream is that one day a little girl will see me in a magazine and say, “Wow, she's beautiful, and she only has one leg. I could do that too someday, even though I have a disability.” My dream is simple: to inspire every man, woman, and child into knowing and believing that they are beautiful just the way they are.

1.How did the author feel after the car accident?

A.She complained that life was unfair to her.

B.She was unable to accept the loss of her leg.

C.She kept a positive attitude toward life.

D.She felt lucky that she was still alive.

2.Why did the author feel happy in Paragraph 3?

A.She was able to offer help to others.

B.She could wear her false leg again.

C.She had lived her life to the fullest.

D.She could do everyday things the same as everybody else.

3.Why did the author begin modeling in 2014?

A.She wanted to be a famous magazine star.

B.She wanted to encourage others to be confident about themselves.

C.She wanted to challenge herself to be a speaker.

D.She wanted to prove that disabled people could also succeed.

4.What was the author's main purpose in writing the article?

A.To stress the importance of having a dream.

B.To show how difficult the life is for disabled people.

C.To inspire others by sharing her past experiences.

D.To give advice to disabled people on how to make a living.
