Baths in Japan

In many western countries people do not bathe (沐浴) every day. Sometimes they bathe only once a week. Sometimes they bathe two or three times a week. They do not bathe often because the weather is cold or because hot water is expensive. They use electricity or wood to boil the water. Electricity and wood cost a lot of money. In cold countries people usually do not feel they are dirty if they do not have a bath.

In Japan people bathe very often. Most people have a bath every day. When the weather is hot they sometimes have two or three baths a day. They bathe in very hot water. Usually the water is almost boiling. They believe that these very hot baths also stop them from falling ill.

Each house has its own bathroom but there are also big bathhouses for everybody. They are found everywhere in Japan. In the bathhouse there is one part for men and one part for women. The bath is usually three meters wide, three meters long and about one meter deep: halfway down there is a narrow (狭窄的) seat that goes all the way around the bath. Many people use the bath but it is not dirty. Before a person gets into the big bath, they wash themselves first, and then get into the big bath. The person stays there for a short time. When they get out of the bath, they wash their body with soap and water. After the soap is all washed away, the person gets into the big bath again. Soap is not used in the big bath.

The water in the big bath is changed quite often. The water is also very hot. In some places people hit the water with sticks first. They do this to make the water cooler. Then the men get into the bath very slowly and carefully. When a man gets into a bath, he says. "Excuse me." He does this because most of the hot water comes directly out of the ground. In other places people boil the water with a big fire. In a small bath at home sometimes people light a fire under the bath. When the water is hot, people in the family take a bath one by one.

Sweet Dreams While You Sleep

Did you sleep the day away on Friday March 21? Well, you should have done that because it was World Sleeping Day.

This is the day of the year when people around the world care about their sleep and ask themselves questions about sleep.

Why do we need sleep?

Nobody as yet can give a perfect answer to this question. However, lab tests on rats have shown that lack (缺少) of sleep over about four weeks leads to a strong drop in body temperature, great weight loss and finally, death.

How much sleep?

Different people need different amounts of sleep. Eight hours a night is considered the average amount of sleep. For teenagers, the least number of sleeping hours advised by doctors are 10 hours for primary school students, nine for junior highs and eight for senior highs.

Some people seem to get along just well with very little sleep at night. Leading American scientist Thomas Edison, for example thought of sleep to be a waste of time. He did, however take naps (打盹) during the day. On the other hand, Albert Einstein, another great scientist, said he needed at least ten hours sleep a night.

How can we sleep well?

Here are some of the most popular tips for a good night's sleep:

*Listen to your body clock, not your alarm clock (闹钟).

*Use your bed only to sleep.

*Get up and go to bed at the same time (also on weekends).

*Exercise in the morning and in the early afternoon. Don't exercise in the evening.

*Stop looking at that clock while you can't sleep! And don't worry.

*Avoid alcohol (酒精), caffeine (咖啡因) and smoking before going to bed.

*Keep the bedroom dark, quiet, and cool.

1.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. Thomas Edison slept very long hours every day.

B. Albert Einstein needed very little sleep.

C. Doctors suggested that primary school students have ten hours of sleep.

D. Doctors suggested that junior highs have eight hours of sleep.

2.Which of the following is not a good sleeping habit?

A. Have a cup of alcohol before going to bed.

B. Keep the bedroom dark, quiet and cool.

C. Get up and go to bed at the same time.

D. Listen to your body clock.

3.What is implied in this passage?

A. Bedrooms can be used for other purposes.

B. Great scientists need less sleep than ordinary people.

C. World sleeping day is the only time when people become concerned about sleep.

D. Results from lab tests on rats may be applicable to humans.

Stanford University has begun an investigation following claims that some of its staff knew long ago of Chinese scientist He Jiankui’s plans to create the world’s first gene-edited babies.

A university official said a review was under way of interactions some faculty members had with He. who was educated at Stanford. Several professors including He’s former research adviser have said that they knew or strongly suspected that He wanted to try gene editing on embryos (胚胎).

The Chinese genetic scientist posted a video on You Tube in November 2018. He claimed in the video that he had used a gene-editing tool Crispr-Cas9 to modify (修改) a particular gene in two embryos before they were placed in their mother’s womb (子宫). He, who works in a lab in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, said the twin girls, known as Lulu and Nana, were born using an egg that was modified. He focused on HIV infection prevention because the father is HIV positive. “Now the father has a reason to live, a reason to work, he has a purpose,” He said.

Editing the genes of embryos, which can change other genes, is banned in many countries because DNA changes are passed to future generations and could have unforeseen effects on the entire gene pool.

China’s national health commission ordered officials to “seriously investigate” He’s claims. Shenzhen’s health and family planning commission said it was investigating the review process around He’ s work.

Research institutions connected to He have distanced themselves from him. “This research work was carried out by Professor He Jiankui outside of the school,” said the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen. It called his research a “serious violation of academic ethics (道德)”.

A. The effect of DNA changes on the gene pool is unforeseeable.

B. It causes disabilities to the gene-edited babies.

C. The future generations will rely on gene editing.

D. It will affect all the healthy genes of the embryos.

3.How did the university in Shenzhen react to He’s video claim?

A. It ordered investigations to be conducted.

B. It called the incident a big shame for the nation.

C. It declared not related to He’s research.

D. It kept a distance from the media.

4.Which can be a suitable title for the text?

A. The USA Bans Gene-editing

B. What are the Ethics of Medical Treatment?

D. Stanford Investigates Links to Scientist in Gene Editing

The legislature(立法机构) finds that the cigarette is considered one of the deadliest products in human history. So begins a new bill introduced in Hawaii’s State House, calling for a ban on cigarette sales in the state by 2024.

Hawaii has some of the most restrictive cigarette laws in the nation. In 2016, it became the first state to raise the age to buy cigarettes to 21. Now, its new bill calls for raising the cigarette-buying age to 30 by 2020, up to 40, 50 and 60 in each following year, and up to 100 by 2024. That would effectively clear Hawai’s store shelves of cigarettes, although tourists could still bring them in. The age limits would not apply to e-cigarettes, cigars or chewing tobacco.

And curiously,, Hawaii would offer its centenarians (百岁老人) the chance to buy cigarettes ear the end of their life — if they could find them

Richard Creagan, the bill’s sponsor, said that he hoped the bill could represent an “endgame” for the cigarette problem, and that it might be easier to pass the bill in Hawaii than in a mainland state.

“On the mainland they have more trouble with this because they have states around them that are selling cigarettes,” he said. “We don’t have any states around us. And that’s why I thought it could be done here, and it would be kind of an example for the rest of the nation and the world.”

Creagan told the Hawaii Tribune-Herald he’s confident that the bill will survive any court challenges.

In 2015, the National Academy of Sciences released a report arguing that increasing the age to buy tobacco to 21 would have a “considerable impact” on the age at which someone takes their first puff. The report also suggested “if someone is not a regular tobacco user by age 25, it is highly unlikely he or she will become one.”

1.What can we know about Hawaii from Paragraph 2?

A. Hawaii has no cigarette laws at present.

B. The cigarette-buying age will be 50 in 2023.

C. The age to buy cigarettes was raised to 21 in 2016.

D. All cigarette stores in the state have been closed.

2.What does the new bill call for?

A. Even tourists can’t bring cigarettes to Hawaii.

B. No one under 100 can buy cigarettes by 2024.

C. Hawaiians can’t buy cigarettes in other states.

D. Growing tobacco is not allowed in Hawaii.

3.The underlined words in the last paragraph mean “________”.

A. buys their first pack of cigarettes

B. smokes their first cigarette

C. quits smoking for the first time

D. first offers cigarettes to others

4.What is the main idea of the text?

A. Hawaii is considering a bill to ban cigarette sales.

B. Hawaii will lower the cigarette-buying age.

C. Hawaii is to ban smoking in its neighboring states.

D. Hawaii has released a report on the harm of smoking.

China has entered the cinematic space race. Wandering Earth, the country’s first blockbuster science fiction film, is on track to be one of the highest-grossing (总收入) films in China’s history.

The film has brought in more than 2bn yuan (£232m) in the six days since its release on February 5. So far, it is the highest-grossing film released over the holiday season, a peak time for the Chinese box office.

Wandering Earth is based on the work of Liu Cixin, the author of the Three-Body Problem series and the first Chinese author to win a Hugo award.

Wandering Earth fills the gap in Chinese science fiction movies. It means that China’s science fiction movies have officially set sail,” one fan of the film wrote on the review site Douban.

The film is seen by some as the dawn of Chinese sci-fi — a genre that has long been led by Hollywood. Several other Chinese-made sci-fi films are due to debut (首映) this year, including Shanghai Fortress, about an alien invasion, and Pathfinder, which follows a spaceship that has crashed on a deserted planet.

Frant Gwo, the director of Wandering Earth, said, “2019 could be remembered as year zero of Chinese science-fiction blockbusters. It is not just about one successful movie but about multiple films.”

Critics of the film have pointed out the plot holes and the one-dimensional female characters — something Wandering Earth shares with its Hollywood peers.

In response to plot criticisms about the necessity of ejecting (喷射) Earth from the solar system, Liu said: “Of course we don’t need to escape soon. That’s why it’s a movie instead of a real-life crisis.”

1.Wandering Earth has become China’s ________.

A. first blockbuster sci-fi film B. highest-grossing film

C. only sci-fi film this year D. first sci-fi film to win an award

2.What is the fan’s attitude toward the film according to Paragraph 4?

A. Doubtful. B. Negative.

C. Praiseful. D. Uncaring.

3.Which aspect do the critics think is a shortcoming of the film?

A. The theory. B. The ending.

C. The special effects. D. The plot holes.

All over the world people are hooked on sports, which help them to strengthen their body and build their character. 1. They improve the participants’ physical skills, and provide entertainment for the audience as well.

Many people like to watch others play games. 2. Often they get very excited when “their” player or team wins. If they are crazy about the game or the player, then they’ll become their die-hard fans. Some sports are so interesting that people everywhere go in for them. Football, for example, has spread around the world. Swimming is popular in countries near the sea or in those with many rivers. 3. And think of people in cold countries. Masses of people love to skate or ski in Japan, Norway or Canada.

4. Chinese boxing, also has a very long history. But basketball and volleyball are rather new, which started in the late of the nineteenth century. People are inventing new sports or games all the time. Water skiing, as a modern game, is one of the newest in the family of sports.

People from different countries or races may not be able to understand each other, but after a game, they get to know each other better and they often become good friends. 5.     Chinese scientists recently have produced two monkeys with the same gene, Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua, using the same technique that gave us Dolly the sheep. These monkeys are not actually the first primates(灵长类)to be cloned. Another one named Tetra was produced in the late 1990s by embryo(胚胎)splitting, the division of an early-stage embryo into two or four separate cells to make clones. By contrast, they were each made by replacing an egg cell nucleus(原子核)with DNA from a differentiated body cell. This Dolly method, known as somatic cell nuclear transferSCNT, can create more clones and allows researchers greater control over the edits they make to the DNA.

Success came from adopting several new techniques. These included a new type of microscopy to better view the cells during handling or using several materials that encourage cell reprogramming, which hadn’t been tried before on primates. Still, the research process proved difficult, and many attempts by the team failed. Just two healthy baby monkeys born from more than 60 tested mothers. This leads to many researchers’ pouring water on the idea that the team’s results bring scientists closer to cloning humans. They thought this work is not a stepping stone to establishing methods for obtaining live born human clones. Instead, this clearly remains a very foolish thing to attempt, it would be far too inefficient, far too unsafe, and it is also pointless.

But the scientists involved emphasize that this is not their goal. There is now no barrier for cloning primate species, thus cloning humans is closer to reality. However, their research purpose is entirely for producing non-human primate models for human diseases; they absolutely have no intention, and society will not permit this work to be extended to humans. Despite limitations, they treat this breakthrough a novel model system for scientists studying human biology and disease.

1.What do we know about the technology called SCNT?

A. It created the first two primates.

B. It may contribute to editing the DNA.

C. It can divide an early-stage embryo into several cells.

D. It produced two cloned monkeys with different genes.

2.What does the author mean by “pouring water on the idea” in paragraph 2?

A. Keeping a hot topic of it.

B. Attaching no importance to it.

C. Having a low opinion of it.

D. Adding supportive evidence to it.

3.What is the scientists’ purpose to clone these monkeys?

A. To prepare for their research on human cloning.

B. To serve as a stepping stone to their reputation.

C. To help with the study of human diseases.

D. To raise money for holding an exhibition of novels.

4.What can we infer from the passage?

A. Cloning humans is already on its way.

B. New techniques seem to be pointless.

C. Society won’t agree to clone another monkey.

D. The success rate of cloning a monkey was not high.

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 12 (Xinhua)—Legendary comic book writer Stan Lee has died at the age of 95, according to media reports on Monday.

Lee, born in Stanley Lieber on Dec. 28th, 1922, began his career in 1939 and joined the Marvel Comics in 1961.

He is considered as one of the most legendary names in the history of comic books and the leading creative force behind the rise of Marvel Comics. He co-created iconic fictional characters such as Spider-Man, X-Men, the Avengers, and many more.

Lee’s characters often have super powers, but they also have weaknesses. They were humans, not gods. They not only struggled to save the world, but also to pay their bills, make friends, and hold jobs. This made Marvel comic book heroes stand apart from its competitor DC, which produced the seemingly perfect heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman. Those superheroes have been adapted into blockbuster films, most of which were made after Disney acquired Marvel in a 4-billion-dollar deal in 2009.

In a statement, Bob Iger, chairman and CEO of the Walt Disney Company said Stan Lee was as extraordinary as the characters he created.

Marvel also praised Lee on its website by putting on one of Lee’s famous quotes, which goes, “I used to be embarrassed because I was just a comic-book writer while other people were building bridges or going on to medical careers. And then I began to realize: entertainment is one of the most important things in people’s lives. Without it, they might go off the deep end. I feel that if you’re able to entertain, you’re doing a good thing. ”

Praise from his Hollywood peers and colleagues was generous. President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige appreciated Lee’s unparalleled impact on the industry. “No one has had more of an impact on my career than Stan Lee,” Feige said. “Our thoughts are with his family and the millions of fans who have been forever touched by Stan’s genius, charisma and heart.”

1.How do Lee’s characters differ from those of DC?

A. They are perfect heroes.

B. They often have super powers.

C. They are not humans, but gods.

D. They have human shortcomings.

2.We can learn from Lee’s statement in Paragraph 6 that ________.

A. it is embarrassing to be a comic-book writer

B. a taste of entertainment is necessary in people’s lives

C. entertainment is the most important thing in the world

D. you can do everything well if you are able to entertain

3.According to the passage, we could know that ________.

A. Lee influenced Kevin Feige’s career a lot

B. Lee joined the Marvel Comics in his forties

C. Lee created the fictional characters all by himself

D. The superheroes were adapted into films before Disney acquired Marvel

4.What can be the best title for the passage?

A. Comics Legend—the Marvels and DC

B. The Superheroes in Stan Lee’s Comics

C. Marvel’s Comics Legend Stan Lee Dies at 95

D. The Life Story of Marvel Comics Legend Stan Lee

I sat with my friend in a well-known coffee shop in a neighboring town of Venice. As we enjoyed our coffee, a man called the waiter and placed his order, “Two cups of coffee, one on the wall.” We got interested and observed that he was served with one cup of coffee but he paid for two. As soon as he left, the waiter attached a piece of paper to the wall saying “A Cup of Coffee.” Similar occasions took place twice while we were there. It seemed that this gesture was quite normal at this place. However, it was something unique and confusing for us.

After a few days, when we again enjoyed coffee there, a man entered. The way this man was dressed did not match the standard or the atmosphere of this coffee shop. Poverty was evident from his looks. As he seated himself, he looked at the wall and said, “One cup of coffee from the wall.” The waiter served coffee to this man with respect and dignity. The man had his coffee and left without paying. We were amazed to watch all this when the waiter took off a piece of paper from the wall and threw it in the dustbin.

Now it was no surprise for us; the matter was very clear. The great respect for the needy shown by people in this town moved us to tears.

Coffee is not a necessity. However, the point is that when we take pleasure in any blessing, maybe we also need to think about those people who also appreciate that specific blessing but cannot afford.

Note the waiter, who gets the communication going between the affording and the needy with a smile on his face. Think about the man in need: he enters the coffee shop without having to lower his self-dignity; he has a free cup of coffee without asking or knowing about who has given this cup of coffee to him; he only looked at the wall, placed an order for himself, enjoyed his coffee and left. Besides, we need to remember the role played by the wall that reflects the generosity and care of people in this town.

1.What made the author interested as well as confused?

A. The waiter’s making normal gestures.

B. Customers’ buying coffee for the needy.

C. The waiter’s attaching coffee orders on the wall.

D. Customers’ paying for coffee and having it put on the wall.

2.The author thought the man in need was ______.

A. not properly dressed

B. obviously poor

C. not right to leave without paying

D. strange to order coffee from the wall

3.In the author’s opinion, coffee is _____.

A. necessary in our life

B. respect shown for the needy

C. a blessing to someone who can’t afford

D. a blessing everyone should have

4.The passage is mainly concerned about ______.

A. learning from the waiter

B. buying coffee for others

C. caring more about the people in need

D. analyzing the characters in the coffee shop

Your 2018 Reading List, Provided by Bill Gates

Most of us can’t live like billionaire Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, but we can read like him. Gates recommended four books in 2018—though some were published earlier.

Leonardo da Vinci, by Walter Isaacson (2017)

The bestselling biographer of Steve Jobs and Albert Einstein researched deeply into da Vinci’s contributions beyond art, highlighting the breadth of his scientific, technological, and creative output. “Leonardo nearly understood almost all of what was known on the planet at the time. That’s mostly because of his curiosity about every area of natural science and the human experience,” said Gates.

The Best We Could Do: An Illustrated Memoir, by Thi Bui (2017)

Gates calls this graphic novel “really impressive”. Bui is the daughter of Vietnamese refugees who came to America after the fall of Saigon, and becoming a parent inspired her to look into her own parents’ miserable history. “I was struck by how the experiences Bui illustrates manage to be both universal and specific to their circumstances,” said Gates.

Lincoln in the Bardo, by George Saunders (2018)

Saunders, a long-time short story writer, won high praise for this novel. The book imagines the ghosts that haunt (萦绕) the basement of Willie Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln’s son, who died at 11 in real life. “Willie’s death after the Civil War made the president have a new understanding of the grief he’s creating in other families by sending their sons off to die in battle,” said Gates.

Origin Story: A Big History of Everything, by David Christian (2018)

This new book is by the creator of Big History, a free, online social studies course. It traces history in wide, sweeping movements, starting with the Big Bang, and it provides, in effect, a short course in modern science. This is a brief history of the universe. “David gets a little stuck on the current economic and political problems in the West, and I wish he talked more about the role innovation will play in preventing the worst effects of climate change,” said Gates.

1.Which books refer to the field of science?

A. Origin Story and Leonardo da Vinci.

B. Lincoln in the Bardo and Origin Story.

C. Leonardo da Vinci and The Best We Could Do.

D. The Best We Could Do and Lincoln in the Bardo.

2.If you are interested in thrillers, whose book will you most probably choose?

A. Walter Isaacson. B. Thi Bui.

C. George Saunders. D. David Christian.

3.Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. The Best We Could Do is an autobiography.

B. Lincoln in the Bardo has been warmly received.

C. David Christian talks much about the part that innovation will play.

D. Readers can only read about Leonardo da Vinci’s contributions towards art.

Researchers define self-control or self-discipline as“ability to control or change one’s inner responses”1. Howeversome people think that as an immediate consequence of leading lives of constant self-controlthey aren’t likely to gain a lot of pleasure from life

2. To start414 adults completed on online surveyIn the surveythey rated the their self-control by indicating how much they agreed with 14 statementssuch as“I indeed do certain things that are bad for meif they are fun

In their study205 adults were given smart phones and required to report their emotions at random moments throughout the week 3. If sothey had to report how hard they tried to resist themand whether they eventually ended up acting on them

The researchers found that the more self-control people hadthe more satisfied they were with their lives in the long run 4.  In factsuch people’s increased happiness to a large extent accounted for the increased life satisfaction

These researchers also figured out that people high in self-control are simply less likely to find themselves in situations where that’s even an issueThey don’t waste time fighting inner battles over whether or not to eat a second piece of cake5. And thatit would seemmakes them happier……even if occasionally a little bit sad

AIn a wordthey are not bothered about such little desires

BResearchers checked these general ideas through a survey and study

CIt is generally believed that in the long run self-control can make people happier

DMeanwhilethey were also asked to report whether they were experiencing any desires

EHoweverpeople with more self-control were also more likely to be happy in the short run

FBut they are still uncertain why some people are more able to control their inner responses

GMost adults reported they failed to control their desire to play video games before an exam

The thing that sets children apart from adults is not their ignorancenor their lack of skillsRatherit's their enormous capability for joyA friend told me a storyOne daywhen she went to get his 6-year-old son from soccer practiceher kid greeted her with a sad faceThe teacher had criticized him for not focusing on his soccer drillsThe little boy walked out of the schoo1 with his head and shoulders hanging downHe seemed wrapped in sadnessBut before reaching the car doorhe suddenly stoppedcrouching(蹲伏)down to look at something on the sidewalk“Momcome here! This is the strangest bug I’ve ever seenIt has 1ike a million legsIt’s amazing!”The little face was overflowing with indescribable excitement

Nowadayshoweverwhen we walk into a classroomespecially in a high schoolwe’ll be choked by towering books and papersand hiding behind them are a group of motionless creaturespens in handminds dryjust as the hollow men portrayed by TSEliotTheir pursuit of joy has given way to their hunger for gradesLaughter and happiness are a distant memory for them

Although joy is an unaffordable luxury in today’s increasingly fierce competitionadministrators and teachers need a mindset shift from crushing students with assignments to getting them to take pleasure in productive activities which develop their important qualitieslike perseverance and obligationThe assumption that pleasure is the enemy of competence and responsibility makes no sense educationally

Adults tend to talk about learning as if it were medicineunpleasantbut necessary and good for youWhy not think of learning as if it were food—something so valuable to humans that they want to experience it as a pleasure?
