Professor Sun Jun, aged 93 in 2018, has devoted his life to working on China’s giant construction projects, including the Qinghai-Tibet highway, Three Gorges Dam, and the Yangtze River Tunnel. In his latest project, the Tongji University academic served as a senior adviser on the construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

Under the guidance of Sun, Xu Wei, a professor in Tonji and Sun’s student, took over technical assistance for the construction of the bridge. “Every time I saw Sun and other professors working on the bridge,I felt at ease,” said Lin Ming, the general project manager. Lin initially invited an experienced Dutch company to serve as the technical assistant for the project. The company wanted to charge US $171million. He then asked for help from Xu along with experts in Tongji University.

The methods developed by Tongji University reduced the impact of the bridge on the Chinese white dolphin, which is under first class state protection. The key challenge during the construction of the bridge was the 6.7-km underwater tunnel, the world’s longest and deepest undersea tunnel. Ding Wenqi, who was nicknamed the “ tunnel expert” , was asked to ensure the tubes be connected perfectly—even under the influences of land subsidence (下沉), water pressure and tide movement. Hu Xiangdong, another professor with Tongji, developed a method to freeze the earth around the tunnel to prevent water leakage and land subsidence during the digging of the most challenging 2-km section of the tunnel.

The tunnel section of the project was completed in May 2017. Sun was invited to visit the near-completed bridge again in February 2018. The expert said he felt the most relaxed this time since most of the challenges have been conquered. “In the next step, we should focus on how to make the two artificial islands more beautiful and attract travelers,” Sun said.

Xu said all the staff in my office took a great pride in watching the TV news of the bridge’s official opening on Wednesday.

While weather forecasters can make fairly accurate predictions, there's always the risk you'll be caught out while driving in the rain. But the days of having to quickly close your sunroof could soon be a thing of the past thanks to Jaguar Land Rovefs latest technology. The firm is developing cars that can adapt automatically by closing windows and roofs or starting the heater if they detect bad weather is on the way. The weather forecasting system uses a set of air pressure, humidity(湿度)and light sensors(传感器)to help its vehicles predict changes in conditions and adapt to them. Cars equipped with the system could make slight changes to the air conditioning if it finds the weather is getting warmer during a journey or increase the cabin temperature if it will get colder.

The forecast may indicate there is a possibility of one or more weather conditions, such as rain, within a period of time, such as five minutes. The vehicle may then adapt to the local weather conditions. In particular, it may close one or more windows, or close a roof of the vehicle in response to a forecast being a sign of rain. Similarly windows could be darkened using electrochromic (电致变色的) glass to improve visibility if bright sunshine is forecast.

Although its unclear whether this technology will make its way to a production vehicle anytime soon, such a system would be advantageous on autonomous vehicles. Since there's no human driver present, the system will allow the vehicle to make it comfortable for its passengers, based on current weather conditions. It can also make the vehicle safer if it knows rain or snow is coming.

1.How will Jaguar Land Rovefs latest technology benefit drivers?

A. Vehicles can automatically drive themselves.

B. Vehicles can find positions and routes themselves,

C. Vehicles can act as mobile weather forecasting stations.

D. Vehicles can open windows and sunroofs automatically.

2.What is the feature of the glass of a vehicle with the new technology?

A. It can help adjust the temperature.

B. It can still be clear in rainy days.

C. It is too strong to break into pieces.

D. Its colour can change with the sunshine.

3.What can we know about the weather forecasting system from the text?

A. It is intellige nt enough to stop raining.

B. It makes the driver more comfortable.

C. It can't predict the weather accurately.

D. It makes autonomous cars safer in bad weather.

4.Where might the text be taken from?

A. A book review. B. A science report.

C. A science fiction. D. A travel brochure.

Positive thinking is a significant element of happiness.  In order to become a positive thinker, determination and consistency are important. The first thing to know about positive thinking is that everyone can do it.  With certain cognitive (认知的) and behavioral changes, we can all become positive thinkers.  Another important factor is that being a positive thinker does not mean you become numb to anything that is not working properly in your life or is negative - it just means that you approach life and face challenges with a healthier outlook.

Instead of selectively attending to negative events, focus on the positive ones. Then pay attention to the delayed consequences of your behavior rather than the immediate ones. For example, if a job is not going like you want, focus on the fact that you have a job and how you can take your time to make the situation better.

Challenge any internal attributions and see if you compare your behavior to standards that are excessively rigid and perfectionistic. If so, change these and be reasonable with your.comparisons. For example, if you constantly compare your weaknesses with other people's strengths, then switch this and compare yourself with those who are doing poorer than you as well. Overall, people who focus more on their strengths than their weaknesses but at the same time are aware of their weaknesses have a healthier self-evaluation result.

When faced with too much fear about a situation, imagine the worst case and visualize a solution for it, then let go of fear.  This way, you will be prepared for anything and your fear will not block you from being open and creative to different solutions. For example, if you are constantly worried about losing your job up to a point where it is creating a lot of anxiety and fear and is effecting your performance and your happiness negatively, then think of losing your job, visualize how you will handle it, find solutions in your mind and then let go of the thought and the fear attached to it.

So positive thinkers are better problem solvers and have better interactions. In addition to that, people who are positive thinkers are happier and more satisfied with their life.

1.Why is positive thinking a significant element of- happiness?

A. It means that one is blind to the troubles and difficulties that exist.

B. It means that one constantl y compares everything with other people's.

C. It means that one is strong in mind and has nothing to be afraid of.

D. It means that one approaches life and faces challenges more healthily.

2.What does the text suggest about the job you don't like?

A. Quitting it and finding a better one.

B. Keeping and trying to make it better.

C. Being negative and numb to it.

D. Challenging yourself with a new outlook.

3.What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 4?

A. Be prepared for the worst: and let go of fear.

B. Being constantly worried will lose your job.

C. Fear will prevent you being open and creative.

D. There is nothing to fear if well prepared.

4.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. How to focus on the positive events

B. How to be a positive thinker

C. What to do when faced with fear

D. What to know of self-evaluation

Art has always been a vital part of my life. When I was o ld enough to appreciate genuine fine art , my parents started bringing me to museums that housed works of the greatest artists in the world.

When my art teacher asked us to do a Cubist(立体派的)drawing, my first thought was that she was just joking. I didn't like Cubism.  I thought to do so means making fun ofthe true artists I admired. Unwillingly, I began to find out items for my drawing, I carelessly drew the objects all from different view points. The pictures all looked like a mess of lines and shapes anyway, but I was more concerned with how many more minutes were in the period because I was hungry. Yet, the other part of me was growing quieter. I began to take my task seriously and darken specific lines. I stared at my drawing and determined which ones needed to be emphasized. I was soon shading certain shapes black and they brought out important figures. It must be absolutely perfect.

When I showed her my finished drawing, my teacher looked at me with her huge smile and simply stated, "You are a Cubist. " At that moment the world stopped moving. My cubist drawing was the best piece of art I had ever created, not because I had spent the most time on it but because I had felt it.  I thought of how I produced it.  Once I felt frustrated, trying to perfect my black lines.  Another time I was delighted in breathing life into the drawing by adding color.  All of these emotions showed themselves in my work, giving it life that none of my previous works had had. Cubism set me free, showing everything I knew, everything I was, and everything I wished I could be. I had found the missing link, and the world began to move again.

1.How did the author first react to his art teachefs request?

A. He was unwilling to do it.

B. He was pleased to do it.

C. He was worried about it.

2.What do you think of the writer according to the text?

A. Absent-minded. B. Self-centred.

C. Warm-hearted. D. Strong-willed.

3.What does the underlined part in the last paragraph refer to?

A. The enthusiasm of painting. B. The relationship with his teacher.

C. The method to do a Cubist drawing. D. The determination to be a Cubist.

4.What lesson can we get from the text?

A. Practice makes perfect. B. Attitude is everything.

C. It is-never too old to learn. D. Action speaks louder than words.

Making the Most of Life Experiences

If you ask anyone what the purpose of life is, you’ll likely receive wildly different responses. The answer to this question is deeply personal because different things are important to us throughout the course of our lives. 1.

Finding ways to make the most of our experiences is a challenge we face every day. Here are some ways to make your experiences meaningful.

Follow your dreams.

The number one way to live a life free of regret is to follow your dreams. Passion will die without actions supporting them. 2.Every day take an action, no matter how small, to achieve your goals. Each day is a step forward and none of it is wasted.

Make lots of mistakes.

3. Many of my strongest memories come from the times I’ve failedand those lessons have stayed with me. Failure is beneficial to us. And time allows me to see the value of even the most painful situation.

4.

Difficult and painful experiences shape our character but can also weigh us down. These prevent us from moving forward. So much of our progress in life relies on willpower and a healthy emotional stale. If you’re under stress, your body and mind both require time to recover. 5.

For me, life is about experiences. We all have to dream, work hard, and fail before we can achieve success. Maybe we’ll discover along the way that the journey is more important than the destination .

A. Take care of yourself.

B. Improve your personality.

C. Making mistakes is the surest path to grow as a person.

D. It’s best to rest, recover, and slowly build back up your strength.

E. Yet one thing stays with us no matter where we go: our experiences.

F. Though we try our best to make fewer mistakes, it is impossible to avoid them.

G. Though we can’t choose the outcome of our actions, we can choose to keep pursuing(追求).

Most airlines go all out to ensure their passengers have the best possible flight experience. Now, Europe's low-budget airline, easyJet, wants to extend the positive experience beyond the plane ride with “Sneakairs” smart shoes that allow visitors to explore new cities and towns without ever looking at a map.

To transform Sneakairs from an ordinary shoe to a tour guideall the wearer has to do is enter his or her desired destination into the easyJet smartphone app. A built-in GPS will determine the wearer’s starting location while the Google Maps navigation (导航)tool will help chart the best route. Whenever a change of direction is necessary, the app will communicate with the appropriate shoe via the Bluetooth and cause it to vibrate(振动). For example, if the wearer needs to turn right, he/she will feel the sensation in the right shoe. Should the user miss the turn, the smart shoes will both vibrate at the same time, reminding him/her to change course.

Visitors that wander off the suggested path or decide to take a break for a cup of coffee or a meal have nothing to worry about. The smart app will automatically determine the new location and chart out a new route. Once the desired destination is reached, Sneakairs will vibrate three times to inform the user of the arrival and then go back to being ordinary shoes—until their navigation services are needed again!

Sneakairs is certainly not the first navigation shoe in the market. However, easyJet is the first airline to offer them to passengers just as they are about to land in an unknown city. However, before Sneakairs can go mainstream, the easyJet team still needs to make some adjustments. Among the challenges that need to be addressed is the smart shoe’s three-hour battery life, which is hardly enough for a tourist to catch all the delights a new city or town has to offer!

1.What can we learn about Sneakairs in the text?

A. Its size. B. Its price.

C. Its material. D. Its function,

2.What does the author mainly talk about in Paragraph 2?

A. How Sneakairs works.

B. How visitors choose routes.

C. How users avoid getting lost.

D. What users should pay attention to.

3.What might easyJet do to improve its smart shoes?

A. Bring down their cost.

B. Add more functions.

C. Develop more types.

D. Make the battery last longer.

4.Where does this text probably come from?

A. A commercial ad. B. A science report.

C. A tourist map. D. An airline guide.

Every time a new year is coming, people set out to better themselves. They promise they will lose weight, find a new job, or maybe even take that vacation they’ve always talked about. But why do we make these promises to ourselves, and where did this tradition come from? Why does this tradition live on when so many people fail to keep the resolutions(决定) they made? Well, we can start by blaming the ancient Babylonians.

Around 4,000 years ago in Babylon, the earliest recorded celebration honoring the coming of a new year was held. Calendars weren’t as they are today, so the Babylonians did it in late March during the first new moon after the Spring Equinox(春分). The festivities were meant for the rebirth of the sun god, but the Babylonians made promises in order to please their gods. They felt this would help them start the new year off well.

Resolutions continued on with the Romans. When the early Roman calendar no longer synced(同步) up with the sun, Julius Caesar decided to make a change. He consulted with the best astronomers and mathematicians of the time and introduced the Julian calendar, which more closely represents the modern calendar we use today. Caesar declared January 1 the first day of the year to honor the god of new beginnings, Janus. The Romans celebrated the New Year by offering sacrifices to Janus.

To this day, the traditions of the ancient Babylonians and Romans continue  around the world. So much that Google launched a Resolution Map in 2013 where people could add resolutions and see others adding theirs in real time. However, no matter how many people participated in Google’s project, the numbers are bleak when it comes to the number of people who maintain their resolutions----only eight percent of people are successful in sticking them out.

1.Why did the ancient Babylonians make promises to their gods?

A. To honor the god of new beginnings.

B. To observe the rebirth of the sun god and please him.

C. To honor the coming of a new year and satisfy their gods.

D. To please their gods and hope for a good start of the year.

2.What can we know about the tradition of the New Year’s resolutions?

A. The tradition of making New Year’s resolutions will soon die.

B. A lot of people don’t feel like making New Year’s resolutions.

C. Julius Caesar made January 1 the first day of a year on his own.

D. The history of making New Year’s resolutions is not well known.

3.What does the underlined word “bleak” in the last paragraph mean?

A. Large. B. Unpleasant.

C. Encouraging. D. Hopeful.

4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A. How Making New Year’s Resolutions Came Into Being?

B. The Ancient Babylonians and the Romans

C. The Change of Roman Calendars

D. How People Better Themselves

Last April, on a Sunday, we took one of our “nowhere” drives. My husband was quietly driving along a back road. I was occupied in the front passenger seat watching the scenery.

I noticed out of the corner of my eye that my husband was struggling to look out of my window. This frightened me, since his eyes should be on the road in front of him. I asked him what he was looking at out of the windows, and he quietly replied, “Nothing.”

After a few minutes, I looked over at my husband and noticed a tear running down his cheek. I asked him what was wrong. This time he told me, “I was just thinking about Pop and a story he had once told.”  It had something to do with Pop, his friend from childhood, and I wanted to know the story, so I asked him to share it with me.

He said, “When I was about 8 years old, Pop and I were out fishing and he told me that the pine trees know when it is Easter.”

I had no idea what he meant by that, so I pressed him for more information.

He continued on... “The pine trees start their new growth in the weeks before Easter because spring is drawing near. If you look at the tops of the pine trees, you will see the yellow shoots(嫩芽). As the days get closer to Easter Sunday, the tallest shoot will branch off and form a cross. By the time Easter Sunday comes around, you will see that most of the pine trees will have small yellow crosses on all of the tallest shoots.”

I turned to look out of the window and I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was a week before Easter, and you could see all of the trees with the tall yellow shoots stretching to the sky.

The tallest ones shone in the sunlight like rows of tiny golden crosses. May you find your Easter season filled with beautiful golden crosses!

1.How did the author feel when she found her husband looking outward while driving?

A. Curious. B. Calm.

C. Afraid. D. Excited.

2.Why did the husband cry?

A. He saw something strange out of the window.

B. He was scolded by his wife for driving carelessly.

C. He was too frightened to drive the car on the road.

D. He thought of an old friend and was moved by his story.

3.What can we infer from the text?

A. The author knew Pop’s story very well.

B. Pop was traveling together with the couple.

C. The author was amazed at the appearance of pine trees.

D. Pine trees have something to do with the origin of Easter.

4.What does the author intend to tell us?

A. We should be careful while driving.

B. Pine trees are more beautiful before Easter.

C. Easter should be decorated with golden crosses.

D. Easter promises hope with the coming of spring.
