I am grateful to my English teacher Susan, at whose help I couldn't have won first prize in the English Talent Competition for high school student last week.

I used to be poorly in spoken English. I was too shy to speak in class. Since she teaches us last term, she has been encouraging him to overcome fear and speak out in class. Thanks to her, I have made great progresses. Besides, I practiced several times in the front of her. It was her advice which made me a better speaker and full of confidence. But I owe my success to her.

Susan set a good example to me. I am determined to become an English teacher when I grow up.

Will there be an outbreak of bird flu that threatens humans? Many experts disagree on when or whether a human pandemic (大流行病) will occur, but do say there is a chance that the virus could mutate(变异), leading to widespread infection.1.Here’s what you need to know to help keep yourself healthy.

Stock up on food, water and household supplies. If there is a bird flu pandemic, you'll want to minimize your chance of catching it by staying indoors; you might even be required to stay home if the government asks that people remain in quarantine (隔离期). You’d better stock up today on at least 2-week worth of essentials such as water, food, emergency and medical supplies. 2.

Have an outbreak plan. It may feel odd or uncomfortable to talk to family members and loved ones about the worst-case pandemic scenario. But if that scenario strikes, you’ll all be much better off if you have a plan decided on and ready. 3. Figure out how you would care for them and what your first response and responsibilities would be; this is an especially important conversation to have with those with special care needs.

4. Things like keeping a balanced diet, exercising regularly and getting sufficient rest can help keep you healthy in an outbreak and also keep you from catching the common cold. Particularly in a flu outbreak situation, it will be important to wash our hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Be diligent about covering coughs and sneezes with tissues.

Moreover, know your essential health information such as blood type, allergies, and past or current medical conditions. Make a list of that essential information for all the members of your family. 5. And do make sure everyone in your household knows where to find it.

A.Work out regularly to stay slim.

B.Pick up the habits of healthy behavior.

C.It is wise to keep it somewhere safe and visible.

D.It’s important to ask yourself these questions before a pandemic occurs.

E.Talk with your friends and family about how you’d respond to an epidemic.

F.In that case, the best thing you can do right now is to prepare for that possibility.

G.That will help you get through an extended time at home if an outbreak happens.

Just how much does the Constitution(宪法) protect your digital data? The Supreme Court will now consider whether police can search the contents of a mobile phone without a warrant (授权令) if the phone is on or around a person during an arrest.

California has asked the justices to restore the practice that the police may search through the contents of suspects’ smartphones at the time of their arrest. It is hard, the state says, for judges to assess the implications of new and rapidly changing technologies .

The justices would be careless if they followed California's advice. They should start by rejecting California’s weak argument that exploring the contents of a smart phone is similar to say, going through a suspect's wallet. The court has ruled that police don't offend against the Fourth Amendment(修正案) when they go through the wallet of an arrestee without a warrant. In fact, exploring one's smartphone is more like entering his or her home. A smartphone may contain an arrestee's reading history, financial history, medical history and comprehensive records of recent correspondence.

Americans should take steps to protect their own digital privacy and should avoid putting important information in smartphones. But keeping sensitive information on these devices is increasingly a requirement of normal life. Citizens still have a right to expect private documents to remain private and protected by the Constitution's prohibition on unreasonable searches.

In many cases, it would not be very difficult for authorities to obtain a warrant to search through phone contents. They could still trump(打出王牌) the Fourth Amendment protections when facing severe and dangerous circumstances, such as the threat of immediate harm, and they could take reasonable measures to ensure that phone data are not deleted or altered while a warrant is on the way. The justices, though, may want to allow room for police to cite situations where they are entitled to more flexibility.

But the justices should not swallow California's argument whole. New technology sometimes demands fresh applications of the Constitution's protections. Orin Kerr, a law professor, compares the explosion and accessibility of digital information in the 21st century with the establishment of automobile use as a digital necessity of life in the 20th. At that time, the justices had to explain new rules for the new personal domain(领域) of cars. Similarly, the justices must sort out how the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution applies to digital information now.

1.The author’s attitude toward California’s argument is _____________.

A.skeptical B.tolerant

C.indifferent D.disapproving

2.The author believes that exploring one's phone content is comparable to_____________.

A.getting into one's residence B.handing one's historical records

C.scanning one's correspondences D.going through one's wallet

3.In paragraph 4 and 5, the author shows his concern that_____________.

A.principles are hard to be clearly expressed

B.citizens' privacy is not effectively protected

C.phones are used to store sensitive information

D.the court is giving police less room for action

4.Orin Kerr's comparison is quoted to indicate that_____________.

A.the Constitution should be implemented flexibly

B.Principles of the Constitution should never be changed

C.New technology requires reinterpretation of the Constitution

D.California's argument violates principles of the Constitution

With self-driving vehicle technology rapidly advancing, many companies are turning to autonomous robots for the final leg of the delivery process, from the store or local distribution center to the customer. The latest to join the trend is e-commerce giant Amazon. Following a successful eight-month test run in Snohomish County, Washington, the company’s Scout robots have been making the rounds of Irvine, California, since August 6, 2019.

The six-wheeled Scout is about the size of a large cooler with the capacity to carry small or medium-sized packages. The battery-powered vehicle, which moves at a regular walking pace, has been programmed to avoid pedestrians, animals, and unexpected obstacles, such as garbage cans. Its powerful sensors can also detect the movement of a car backing out of a driveway.

To accelerate Scout’s development and bring it nationwide sooner, the company has created several detailed virtual maps of American suburbs and conducted trial deliveries to homes there.

Though Amazon has not shown how Scout ensures the delivery is picked up by the right person, it most likely requires the customers to apply a unique code, texted to them prior to the delivery, to unlock the store box. Also unclear is the number of deliveries Scout can complete before its battery needs to be recharged. Though the initial tests are being conducted with a human for company, the robot will be autonomous in the future. Its location, however, will be tracked at all timesif someone attempts to steal Scout, Amazon employees will be instantly sensed.

However, the eco-friendly robots are unable to climb stairs or open gates, which means that they can only reach consumers who live on the ground level. Additionally, the robots are unable to leave packages at the front door if the customers are not home. Whether these problems get resolved remains to be seen. For now, it appears that humans will still be needed to achieve the ever-growing demand for home and office deliveries.

1.Which of the following descriptions about Scout is right?

A.They can be powered themselves. B.They are strong enough to carry big things.

C.They can run with their six wheels. D.They can avoid obstacles ahead.

2.What about Scout is still confusing to common people?

A.How many deliveries it can do on a full charge. B.Whether it can climb stairs or open gates.

C.How it recognizes the right owner of the things. D.How long it will take to get it fully charged.

3.What does the underlined phrase “prior to” in paragraph 4 mean?

A.due to B.after C.in front of D.before

4.What is the author’s opinion about delivery robots according to the last paragraph?

A.They are not easily available. B.They have some limitations.

C.They will replace humans soon. D.They won’t be well accepted.

I remember the day when I first learned to ride a bike. It was a frightening, yet fun experience. My granddad was the one who taught me and he helped me when I got hurt. The first time I got on a bike, I had no idea what I was doing, and just about everything went wrong. My granddad told me to just put my feet on the pedals and start pedaling (骑自行车). He also told me he would hold onto the back of the bike the whole time, yet he didn’t.

As soon as I started trying to balance myself, he let go. I happened to look back just then. I was scared, to death that I was going to fall and hurt myself. When I was scared, my mind went blank from pedaling, and I just wanted off. I forgot how to use the brakes (车闸) and fell right off the bike. On Friday evening, Emmett and I went to a movie as scheduled. After purchasing the tickets and drinks, we entered the cinema with delight beforehand, waiting for the beginning of the movie.

When I got up in the middle of the movie, Emmett whispered, “ Carter, where are you going?” “I forgot to call my mom to tell her what time to pick us up.” I whispered back, leaving my jacket on the seat.

I squeezed past the people in my row, trying not to step on any feet while still watching the screen. I didn’t want to miss a thing. Balfour, the good guy in the movie, was trapped in an underground cave.

When I came back, Balfour’s flashlight almost went out. An enormous snake was moving toward him, twisting its body. Balfour struggled to loosen the chains around his hands and feet to reach his magic cape (魔法斗篷). With the cape around him, he could completely disappear.

I crawled (缓慢行进) back across eight people (I counted on the way out), never taking my eyes off the screen. I sat down in my seat slowly, then picked up my drink, and swallowed it quickly. But suddenly my brain said, “That’s not coke. That’s lemonade.” I looked down at the cup, just as the girl next to me shouted, “He drank my lemonade!”

“Shhhh!” the people around us said, making quiet complaints.

“Where’s Emmett?” I asked, as if the girl had hidden him under her seat.

“Carter, down here,” Emmett answered in a low voice. He was two rows ahead of me. I was in the wrong row! Everyone was turning around to look at me.

“Here,” I said, handing the girl her drink.

“Eww,” she said. “You have had a drink of it, so you owe me a lemonade.”

“Shhhh!” everyone said again.

“OK, OK,” I said, starting my crawl across eight sets of feet again. Everybody were complaining as I inched out.

“Don’t come back,” the boy on the end said.

When I was eight, I wanted a toy and needed $10 to buy it. But, as usual, I was broken. I decided to ask my 11-year-old sister, Kathleen, for a loan. I went to her room, _______ her for the cash. Laughing, she agreed to lend me the money, but _______, “I will charge you 10 percent compound interest every _______ until you pay me back.”

“Compound interest-what’s that?” I asked.

“Well, interest is what you call the _______ money borrowers have to pay back on a loan,” she explained. “Compound interest means that the interest payments get bigger and bigger the _______ it takes you to pay back the loan. To repay the loan, you will need to give me $11 after one month. If you wait two months to pay me back, your _______ will grow from $10 to $11. So I’ll be charging you interest on $11. Then I will add that interest to the $11 you already owe me, for a _______ of $12.10. That’s what you’ll owe after two months. “

“Sure. I get it,” I said. Though truthfully, I was getting _______.

Kathleen lent me the money, and I bought the toy. My birthday came a month later, and my mom gave me $10. _______, that was just the amount I needed to buy another toy I wanted ________. I ________ paying my sister for a month. After another month, I forgot about the loan.

“Sorry, kiddo. That’s mine. I’m ________ your debt.”

“Huh?” Then I ________ the loan. “Hey! How can it be that much? I only borrowed $10.”

“True,” she said, “but interest has been compounding for eight months. Now you owe me $21.43.” She paused, and then, smiling triumphantly, said, “You can pay me the $1.43.”

I ________ to believe that a $10 loan could more than double so quickly. Much to my ________, my sister got her pencil and tablet and showed me exactly how it all ________.

My head ________ as I tried to keep track of Kathleen’s calculations, but this time, I got the basic ________of compound interest. I learned from this ________experience that borrowing money could be “double trouble” in no time.

In today’s fast-paced world, busy lifestyle easily puts stress on relationships. Disappointment is a fact of life. Sometimes other people will unavoidably disappoint you or let you down. 1. But you don’t have to let it prevent you living a happy and successful life. The tips below can help you recover from the hurt or anger.

Allow your feelings. 2. Don’t try to hide them, because it’s natural to feel disappointed when the people you trust don’t come through for you. Putting the feelings into words can help.

Figure out why you feel let down or betrayed. 3. Do you need understanding, support, commitment or consideration? Let yourself feel the disappointment of the unmet need and then accept it or come up with ways you can meet the unmet need for yourself.

4. Think about whether it would be useful to speak up about your feelings of disappointment or betrayal. If you decide to speak up, think about how you could do so mindfully rather than with angry reactions that can make things worse.

Set boundaries if you need to. If you’ve spoken up clearly and the person still doesn’t take responsibility or change his / her behavior, how can you best take care of yourself? 5. Boundaries can help you feel emotionally safe, and they help restore your self-respect.

A.Decide if you need to speak up.

B.You can’t stop people from letting you down.

C.Learn to be your own supporter and best friend.

D.Decide if this is someone you still want in your life.

E.Feeling refused or betrayed can cause sadness, anxiety or anger.

F.If you need practical help, consider turning to your parents or friends.

G.Think about what needs of yours aren’t being met by this person’s response.

Imagine you are 10 years old. You live in a big city and want to visit your best friend, a five-minute walk away, and then you can go to the park, another 10 minutes’ walk. The problem is that there’s a big dangerous road between you and your friend, and another between your friend’s home and the park. When you ask your parents if you can walk there, they say no. But they are too busy to take you there themselves.

Instead, you have a video conversation with your friend, or perhaps you play a video game on the sofa. You’ve lost out on exercise and time outside, interacting with your neighborhood and, of course, play time with your friend. This is the reality for many kids today - but it doesn’t have to be this way.

Tim Gill, the author of Urban Children: Growing Up in a Risky Society, says a child-friendly city is one that allows “everyday freedom”, so children can spread their wings as they grow. “It’s not enough to just talk about playgrounds and nice, pretty public spaces. That just creates play places they have to be taken to by adults,” says Gill.

“Society’s mistake is that our planning systems just focus on cars, house-building and the economy - rather than the environment, health and quality of life,” argues Gill, “You won’t find any urban planners who can disagree with that. It’s because our decision-makers fail to look beyond the next two or three years.”

Tim Gill lists five challenges for urban children in his book: traffic and pollution, high-rise living, crime and social fears, inadequate and unequal access to the city.

Designing cities with young people in mind - particularly outdoor spaces that encourage safe movement and social interaction - stands to be an issue of growing concern globally. By 2050, around 70 percent of people will live in cities, and the majority of them will be under 18. Today, over a billion children are growing up in cities.

1.Why does the author make an assumption in the first paragraph?

A.To show his doubts. B.To give an example.

C.To present the issue. D.To express his opinion.

2.What problem does the author want to raise about urban children?

A.They have few friends.

B.They spend much time on videos.

C.They are unhealthy for lack of exercise.

D.They lose “freedom” because of the risky society.

3.What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

A.Low quality of life. B.Lack of public spaces.

C.Improper city planning. D.Criticism on city planners.

4.What would be the best title for the text?

A.Paying attention to young children B.The call for a child-friendly city

C.Challenges for urban children D.Problems in modern cities

When you look in the mirror, you see yourself. That puts you in the company of animals like dolphins, elephants and chimpanzees. The mirror test is often used as a way of measuring whether animals have self-awareness. And an animal that is aware of itself has a high level of intelligence. Now, a species of fish - the cleaner wrasse - has also spotted its reflection.

Alex Jordan, a biologist at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, is one of the researchers of the study on cleaner wrasse consciousness. He and his team conducted many tests that show the fish does seem to recognize its reflection - when the researchers added a colored mark to its body, the fish would even try to remove the mark upon catching sight of it in the mirror. It seems to indicate the clever fish species has some sense of self or individuality.

But Jordan said, “I’m the last to say that the cleaner wrasse is as smart as chimpanzees.” Instead, he believes that the measure scientists have used for nearly 50 years is imperfect.

One problem with the test, for example, is that it uses vision to measure self-awareness. Yet not all animals rely on sight to recognize themselves. It may well be that a bat, for example, which depends on sonar (声波定位) to get around, is self-conscious. Elephants, while able to pass the mirror test, rely more heavily on smell than on sight.

Consciousness in humans or animals is not easy to measure or understand. Philosophers and scientists have long wrestled with the questions of how a sense of self is assessed, and how it relates to physical processes. Jordan believes the cleaner wrasse is self-cognizant (自我知晓的), but not the same extent (程度) as a human. This means scientists need to reconsider whether some concepts centered on humans can be used in understanding animals.

1.The study on the cleaner wrasse made Alex Jordan    .

A.doubt whether the mirror test is reliable

B.discover the secret about the fish’s sight

C.develop a better method to replace the mirror test

D.believe the cleaner wrasse is as smart as chimpanzees

2.Which of the following can replace the underlined part “wrestled with” ?

A.Presented with. B.Ended with.

C.Agreed with. D.Struggled with.

3.What can we learn from the text?

A.It is relatively easy to test animals' consciousness.

B.Some concepts for humans can’t be applied to animals.

C.Animals rely on at least two senses to get to know themselves.

D.More mirror tests are needed to prove the cleaner wrasse is self-aware.

When I reached inside the floorboard, my hand touched what felt like a book. I pulled it out. It was an old and small book: Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations. I wondered whom the quotations (引语) were supposed to be familiar to. What I did know, thanks to Ms. Rattray, my seventh-grade teacher, was the correct way to use quotation marks. I decided to see what was inside this little book.

On the top corners of each page was a word or phrase, I opened it to “comfort and despair” and then “doubt” and “light”. I’d never thought about “light” any other way except as a lamp or daylight. It turned out that Mr Bartlett didn’t feel all these emotions himself. He had gathered up quotations from thousands of other people.

I was relieved to discover that those people were not afraid to express what they thought, including the fears and that they had so many thoughts about things that troubled me. Before this, I was lonely and I didn’t know whom talk to about the world and my role in it.

In ninth grade, I worked as an assistant at our local library. I often hid in the comer, where no one would see me, and I would read. It was at this library that I realized how some of those emotions I’d felt while reading Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations came to life in the characters I had started discovering in novels.

I have bought a few of the newer editions, but the original one is the one that helped me explore my inner self and see more than young mind and heart were able to understand.

I felt sorry for her. Although I was outside the club, I turned back and opened her wallet. I knew I didn't have many, but I gave her whatever came out in my hand but said, “Emma, please see a doctor.” After that, whenever meet me, she smiles to me and says, “Hello, Gina.”

More than half of the birds in Washington are at risk of extinction because of climate change. That's according to a new national report from the Audubon Society, which gives detailed analysis of climate effects on about 600 species of North American birds.

It's based on more than 140 million observations of birds across the US, Mexico and Canada. Audubon scientists looked at the likely effects of sea-level rise, urbanization, drought, extreme spring heat, increased fires, heavy rain and other factors.

But it doesn't just spell out a doomsday scenario (世界末日).Instead, it offers a range of effects and warming, depending on how much carbon humans add to the atmosphere.

"It is truly an existential threat (威胁), not only to birds but to people,” said Doug Santoni, board chair of Audubon Washington, who looked into the report as soon as it came out.

Santoni says he was struck to see the vulnerability (脆弱)of a common “ backyard bird" , the dark-eyed junco. It's one that many first-time birders become familiar with as they learn how to identify species based on their markings and other traits. Currently in Washington, you can count on juncos to show up at your feeder, year round. Extreme spring heat, increased fires and heavy rain are the kinds of changes that will force birds like these north, or kill them off if they fail to adapt.

Trina Bayard, director of bird conservation at Audubon’s Washington chapter, says, "It's certainly a very serious warning report," but adds that there’s still hope. “If we can stabilize current temperatures and decrease our emissions (排放), we can really reduce the effects to these birds …that's very motivating. ”

1.What can we know about the new report?

A.It analyses the species of birds in detail.

B.It's issued by watching 600 bird species.

C.It shows the end of North American birds.

D.It reports the threat some birds are facing.

2.What may Santoni probably agree with?

A.Climate change is a threat only to birds.

B.It's too late to take action to save the birds.

C.The current situation of the birds is worrying.

D.It's common that birds are affected by climate change.

3.Which of the following can help these birds according to Trina?

A.Lowering present temperatures.

B.Reducing our daily emissions.

C.Making them adapt to climate change.

D.Encouraging people to protect them.

4.What can be the best title for the text?

A.Climate change threatens many Washington bird species.

B.A new report about 600 species of North American birds.

C.Different attitudes towards the situation of bird species.

D.Climate change makes different kinds of species at risk.
