Bales left the pavement of Base Road and stepped onto snow-covered Jewell Trail. She planned a six-hour hike through New Hampshire’s Mount Washington State Park. She had packed for almost every emergency and intended to walk alone.

She’d checked the weather forecast posted by the Mount Washington Observatory before she left. Based on her experience, Bales knew that her hike was realistic. Besides, she had two emergency plans and extra layers of clothing to better adjust her body temperature as conditions changed.

The hike up the lower part of Jewell Trail was pleasant. Bales felt excited as she walked up into snowy paths. The sun shone through the trees and cast a shadow over her smiling face. Less than an hour later, loads of dark clouds had replaced the sunshine, and snow covered the surrounding trees.

She still smiled. However, the weather was showing its teeth. Bales added even more layers to shelter herself from the cold winds and thick fog. She made her way across the snow-covered ridge (山脊toward Mount Washington and began to think about calling it a day. Suddenly, she noticed something: a single set of footprints in the snow ahead of her, which had been made by a pair of sneakers-typically not the type for hiking.

Meanwhile, Bales was getting colder, even though she was moving fast and generating some body heat. With strong gusts of wind screaming and attacking her back and left side, she decided to abandon her plan. The only thing, however, kept her on the trail was the sneaker tracks in the snow.

Paragraph 1:

Bales faced a dilemma about whether to follow the tracks or not.

Is it necessary to learn when we are 50s, 60s or even 70s?Most people consider when they get retired, they are supposed to be completely laidback, do something fun, or hang around.1. It’s particularly important to the elderly.

Through learning, we know how to think, how to memorize, how to ask questions and even how to interact with others. According to a study, while we are learning, “the brain creates neural(神经)pathways” that make us smarter. 2. The more we learn, the mote new  neural pathways develop in our brains.

When it comes to learning, it doesn’t mean we must load ourselves with lots of knowledge. What we need to do is just learn something we like day in and day out. 3. Everyone learns from bottom to up. If we have an interest to learn, that desire will naturally push us to move forward.

As we feel worn out from learning, don’t be discouraged.4. An old saying goes, “Birds of a feather fly together.” As long as we have partners to learn all together, our learning excitement will come alive again. On the contrary, if we don’t learn, and choose to distance ourselves from other, we might be getting dumb, and slow; eventually, we lose energy, and life passion. Instead of being bored, dumb, why don’t we keep learning?

5. More importantly, learning explores our life horizon, helps us build up our confidence; gradually, it leads us to a way of finding a sense of value and ach.

A.It’s never too old to learn.

B.Don’t worry if we cannot learn well.

C.You should set a high learning target.

D.Learning makes us understand how potential we are.

E.Look for a partner who has the same common interest as you do.

F.In other words, our brains are active as we learn something new.

G.However, the truth is that learning makes us energetic, and self-fulfilled.

When Central Bucks South became one of the first Philadelphia-area high schools to close due to fear of novel coronavirus exposure in early March, 16-year-old sophomore Andrew knew that things were not going to return to normal as quickly as some of his peers hoped. But still, he disliked the uncomfortable feeling from seeing his friends on the swim team during daily practices to learning alone at home. “I only have three years here at South, and it pains me to see one of them being wasted,” he said.

The coronavirus has affected everyone’s life, especially for students. Schools closed and graduation ceremonies were canceled. Summer plans, like camps and internships (实习)are up in the air. And for recent college graduates, entering the job market in a time of unprecedented (空前的) unemployment rates is no easy task.

Josh Harycki, 17, a senior student at the Shipley School in Philadelphia, who created a “social distancing pledge” for young people. “I saw a lot of younger generations not paying attention, he said. “They were still going out, hanging out with people. I thought that there had to be a way to reach younger people, who were probably not watching the news.”

Harycki launched a call to action on social media and then built a website with a map that tracked the locations of people who’d signed the pledge. The site also shares links to accurate sources of information like the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “ Going from being around with friends for eight hours a day at school to being isolated at home all day wasn’t easy, said Harycki.

We’ve definitely had times when we feel kind of bored at home,” he said. “We are very social beings and we are used to having that school experience. “

Harycki knows that his peers are worried they can’t connect with their friends in the same way, so he created the social distancing pledge to stress that while everyone might be physically distant they are still connected. “Part of what we are highlighting is that you might feel like you are the only one taking this seriously, but our map shows that you’re not alone,” he said.

1.What does “the uncomfortable feeling” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

A.Andrew missed his friends on the swim team.

B.Andrew would rather go swimming than study at home.

C.Andrew hoped he could learn with his friends on the swim team every day.

D.Andrew felt lonely because of long-term learning at home due to COVID-19.

2.What’s the meaning of the underlined phrase “up in the air” in Paragraph 2?

A.Certain position is replaced. B.Projects cannot be continued.

C.Plans are developed smoothly. D.Schools are closed for the moment.

3.Which of the following statements about “social distancing pledge” is TRUE?

A.It can help young people to get together to watch news.

C.It can help reduce young students’ feeling of loneliness with mapping locations.

D.It can give young people an accurate map when they are going to hang out with friends.

4.What’s the best title for this text?

A.Social Distancing Pledge for Young Students B.Young People Fight Against COVID-19

There is more of a connection between food and culture than you may think. On an individual level, we grow up eating the food of our culture. It becomes a part of who we are. Many associate food from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it ties us to our families, holding a special and personal value for us. Food from our family often becomes the comfort food we seek as adults in times of frustration and stress.

On a large scale, traditional food is an important part of culture. It also operates as an expression of culture identity. Immigrants bring it wherever they go, and it is a symbol of pride for their culture and means of coping with homesickness.

Many immigrants open their own restaurants and serve traditional dishes. However, the food does not remain exactly the same. Some materials needed to make traditional dishes may not be readily available, so the taste and flavor can be different from what they would prepare in their home countries. Additionally, immigrants do not only sell dishes to people from the same countries as them, but to people from different countries. Therefore, they have to make small changes about the original dishes to cater to a wider range of customers. Those changes can create new flavors that still keep the cultural significance of the dishes.

We should embrace our heritage(传统)through our culture’s food but also become more informed about other cultures by trying their food. It is important to remember that each dish has a special place in the culture to which it belongs, and is special to those who prepare it. Food is a window into culture, and it should be treated as such.

1.What’s the function of food mentioned in the article?

A.To help motivate homesickness. B.To show national identity.

C.To reflect a country’s history. D.To show a community’s superiority.

A.The specific traditional food. B.The national culture.

C.A traditional expression of food. D.The old-fashioned taste.

A.To attach cultural importance to their dishes.

B.To announce the beginning of their life on foreign soil.

C.To make the dishes popular among customers.

D.To present their own food culture in a new way.

4.What’s the author’s attitude towards different food cultures?

A.Negative. B.Balanced.

C.Unfair. D.Unchangeable.

GLENDALE, PENNSYLVANIA-Expressing embarrassment and disappointment over being the son of such a loser, local four-year-old Connor Heyward was convinced that his father, Craig Heyward, was a fool after losing 45 games of hide-and-seek. “God, this is bad. I’ve hidden behind that bush a dozen times, and he still can’t find me, “ said Connor, admitting that after finding his father crouched behind a chair half his size, he had started to worry he might grow up to be a “ complete idiot” just like his dad. “At first, I thought I might be really good at this game, but after succeeding in hiding underneath a clothes basket with visible holes, I realized the kind of game was not his cake. It’d be one thing if he were only bad at seeking, but so far, his best hiding spot was behind the back door. Who hides behind a door? There’s no strategy to it whatsoever. “

阅读下面文章,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事情节。

When a tornado hit a small town nearby, many families were left homeless. Afterward, all the local newspapers carried stories of the families who suffered the hardest to appeal to people’s attention and assistance.

One Sunday, a particular picture especially touched me. A young woman stood in front of a mobile home, a depressed expression on her face. A young boy, seven or eight years old, stood at her side, eyes downcast. Hiding behind her skirt was a tiny girl who stared into the camera, wide eyes with confusion and fear. The article below gave clothing sizes closely matched ours. This would be a good opportunity to teach my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and three-year-old Meghan to help those less fortunate than themselves.

“We have so much. And these poor people now have nothing,” I said. “We’ll share what we have with them.” I brought three large boxes down from the room upstairs and placed them in the living room. Meghan watched seriously, as the boys and I filled one of the boxes with canned goods and foods. While I sorted through our clothes, I encouraged the boys to go through their toys and donate some of their less favorite things. The boys were pleased to join. Bred rose and went to his room fast. He came back bringing his action figures that he played with not so frequently. Brett also jumped up and ran to fetch some of his Matchbox cars and airplane models. Meghan watched quietly as the boys piled up abandoned toys.

The boys placed the objects they had chosen to donate into one of the boxes while I filled the third box with clothes. Meghan walked up with Lucy, her worn, faded, best-loved rag doll hugged tightly to her chest. “I’ll help you find something for the little girl, too” I said to the little Meghan.

Some Myths You Strongly Keep Believing Are Untrue

There are varieties of false myths we spread from day to day.1.. Otherwise, people will continue to believe such ridiculous myths undoubtedly. You will realize some of the most acceptable facts are completely untrue.

Men get beer bellies from beer.

We blame the beer for the belly. It is widely believed that men who constantly drink beer end up with a beer belly. However, it is not the beer that’s to blame, but the abundance of unhealthy snacks that often accompany the drink. Alcohol in beer irritates the stomach, therefore causing an increased appetite. Dr. Michael Jensen, an obesity specialist in Minnesota USA says that drinking beer makes liver burn alcohol instead of fat, leaving the latter to accumulate in the waist.2., while the one of women’s  accumulates in the hips and  bottoms, as a result of different sexual characteristics.

3..

We are told that dogs see the world in black and white. But the truth is that they can distinguish colors just not in the same way we do. Jay Needs from the University of Washington in Seattle proves that our furry friends are able to receive a limited range of colors, which means they can distinguish objects of the same shape. In general, a dog’s vision is very similar to that of a person with red-green color blindness.

Carrots improve eyesight.

4.. This myth came into existence during the Second World War. The British Army claimed that fighter pilots had excellent night vision as a result of their consumption of large quantities of carrots. Actually, they had radars onboard which made it faster and easier to detect the enemies. The myth about the amazing power of carrots was invented and spread by the media so that enemies would not learn about the fact.5..

A.Dogs can distinguish colors

B.Men’s fat is stored in their bellies

C.Dogs see the world in black and white

D.Men’s fat is not mostly accumulated in these parts

E.Eventually, it spread all over the world and people are still convinced of it

F.We agree with the view that eating carrots plays an essential part in good vision

G.It is high time that scientists created a separate department dedicated to exposing the truth

A new device works like a solar panelexcept that it doesn’t harvest energy from the sun. It absorbs energy from the cold night sky.

A prototype(原型)of the device produced enough electricity at night to power a small light bulb. A bigger version might one day light rooms or charge phones. It also could power  electronics in remote or low-resource areas that lack electricity.

The device makes use of the temperature difference between Earth and outer space. It then uses that difference to create electricity. As long as one side of it is cooler than the otherthe generator can produce electricity. The cooler side faces the sky and is attached to an  aluminum plate. That plate is sealed beneath a transparent cover and surrounded with insulation(隔热材料) to keep out heat. The bottom of the generator is attached to an exposed aluminum plate. That plate is warmed by the local air. At nightthe top plate can get a couple of degrees Celsius cooler than the bottom of the generator.

Researchers tested a 20-centimeter prototype one clear December night in StanfordCalifornia. The generator produced up to about 25 milliwatts of power per square meter of device. That was enough power to light a small light-emitting diodeor LED bulb. Further improvements might increase its production to at least 500 milliwatts per square meter. To do thatthe system might need more insulation around the cool top plate.

The device also could help power remote weather stations or other environmental devicessays Aaswath Raman. He is a materials scientist who worked on the device at the University of CaliforniaLos Angeles. This may be useful in polar regions that don’t see sunlight for months at a timeRaman says. “If you have some low-power load and you need to power it through three months of darknessthis might be a way. ”

1.What can we know about the new device?

A.It gains energy from the sun. B.It’s been widely used in life.

C.It is cooler than a solar panel. D.It’ll be popular in special areas.

2.What does the author mainly talk about in Paragraph 3?

A.Application fields of the device.

B.The developing process of the device.

C.The working principle of the device.

D.Significant effects of the device.

3.How can the device produce more electricity?

A.By putting more insulation around the top plate.

B.By using it in extremely cold and clear nights.

C.By attaching the bottom plate to a warm plate.

D.By covering the top plate with a transparent lid.

4.What could be a suitable title for the text?

A.A Device Using the Cold Night Sky to Produce Electricity

B.A Device Bringing New Hope for Those in the Cold Night

C.The Difference Between a Solar Panel and a New Device

Baseball developed gradually from a number of different ball-and-stick games originating in England. As early as the American Revolution, it was noted that troops played “base ball” in their free time. In 1845 Alexander Cartwright formalized the New York Knickerbocker’ version of the game.

The “New York Game” spread rapidly, replacing earlier localized forms. From its beginnings, baseball was seen as a way of satisfying the recreational needs of an increasingly urban-industrial society. At its beginning it was played by and for wealthy gentlemen. A club might consist of 40 members. The president would appoint two captains who would choose teams from among the members. Games were played on Monday and Thursday afternoons, with the losers often providing an expensive evening’s entertainment for the winners.

During the 1850-1870 period the game was changing, however, with increasing commercialism, under-the-table payments to outstanding players, and gambling(赌博) on the outcome of games. Beginning with the first openly all-salaried team (Cincinnati’s Red Stocking Club) in 1869, the 1870-1890 period saw the complete professionalization of baseball, including formation of the National Association of Professional Baseball Players in 1871. The National League of Professional Base Ball Clubs was formed in 1876, run by business-minded investors in joint-stock company(股份公司) clubs. The 1880s has been called Major League Baseball’s “Golden Age”.     When the young donkey Daisy May came to us, she was pregnant. With no donkey experience , I was unprepared for what might come next.

After some difficulty, Daisy's baby was born. I thought the poor thing was dead. I planned to put the loss behind us and make sure she never got pregnant again. Just then, I heard a little noise. I couldn't believe that baby was breathing and looking at me! We called him Samson, and of course I became his mother as much as Daisy was.

When Samson was nine months old, I had to separate Daisy and Samson for a few hours a day to wean (使断奶)him, but otherwise he went wherever she did. I think she would be lost without him. His donkey stepdad Bernard taught him to always be ready to have fun. They enjoy playing football together and going for a roll on a hot summer day.

I asked a worker to make a harness (马具)for my three little donkeys. When I brought it home I taught them one by one how to pull a cart. Samson watched and freely followed Daisy. When he was three, I put the harness on him and he knew exactly what to do.

That was 15 years ago. Now, the most exciting thing about Samson is that he has become a little renowned. People come from all over to see him perform. The neighbors bring their grandchildren, and my sons bring their friends.

Samson shakes hands, unties my shoe, picks up a hat and more. And when I ask him if he has any bad habits, he tries to pick my pocket! He surprisingly learned these tricks himself. I just ask him to do them and he understands.

The relationship I have with my "baby" Samson has been an amazing experience. Every day is a fun day with this superstar donkey.

Mike licked () the last of the chocolate ice cream. It was almost time to leave. He jumped into the car with his parents and headed off to the Olympic-sized pool for the big swim meet. When his race came up, Mike was confident. He was strong and swift. Mike climbed out the pool, smiling. He had just won first place.

A week later, it was time for another swim meet. Like before, Mike decided to enjoy his favorite flavored ice cream before they left home. As Mike climbed out the pool, his teammates patted () him on the back. He’d taken first place again in his race.

As it turned out, Mike decided to have some chocolate ice cream before every one of the next few swim meets that came up. He began to think of it as his lucky charm. After several months of being placed in the top positions of every race he swam, Mike was feeling unbeatable. And he wouldn’t admit it, but he was also starting to feel a little uncomfortable. All that ice cream was adding a few pounds to his athletic swimmer’s build.

It didn't take long after that for Mike to start coming in second place---and then third and then last place in his races. The lucky chocolate ice cream had lost its magic. On the day of his next swim meet, his mother sat down at the table with him. “Mike, I think we need to talk about this. We all love ice cream, but it’s got lots of fat and sugar in it, and it’s not healthy for your body to eat so much of it.” Mike unwillingly agreed. His father offered to go running with him few days a week to help strengthen his muscles. The extra weight soon disappeared, and Mike found himself breathing easier at swim.

It was the last meet of the season, and Mike wasn’t sure what to expect. He felt healthy again, but he didn’t know if he still had any speed in the pool.

Scientists have discovered a new kind of invisible ink. It’s called water. And all you need for this secret-messaging ink to work is to write with it on a super-hi-tech piece of paper coated with special chemicals. 1. It shows up darker than the surrounding paper under UV(紫外线的)  light.

When the message has been read and needs to be hidden again, get out your hairdryer, and blow some warm air on the paper. 2.

Using hot air from a hairdryer for 15-30 seconds, you were able to reuse the special paper up to 30 times because the heat reorganized the chemical structure of the paper coating. 3.

The invention was made by a group of scientists in China, led by Qiang Zhao of the Institute of Advanced Materials, Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications.

Although much of modern communication is digital(数码的), there are still some situations in which it is important to send messages on a piece of paper, such as when the people don’t have Internet. 4. But the problem has always been how to get rid of a message once it has been shown so no one else can read it.

5.. To use it, write with the lemon juice on ordinary paper, iron() the paper with a hot iron and the hidden message will appear. The downside(缺点) is that the paper has to be destroyed to hide the message so no one else can read it.

A.How to make the invisible ink? Follow the steps.

B.Invisible inks have long been used to send secret messages.

C.Without the heat, the message stayed visible for up to three months.

D.Previously, the most readily available invisible ink was lemon juice.

E.Shine a UV light on the coated paper and the water message becomes visible.

F.Then the message will be gone and the paper can be reused, which keeps costs low.

G.Putting water on the paper broke up the structure of the chemicals it was coated with.
