Eating a big breakfast could help you burn double the amount of calories than if you eat a larger meal at dinner.

It could be the key to losing weight while also keeping blood sugar levels steady, researchers at Lübeck University in Germany said. Their study found filling up in the morning boosts a metabolism (新陈代谢) process known as diet-induced thermogenesis(DIT). DIT refers to the number of calories the body expends to heat the body and digest food. It was shown to be twice as high for those who ate more at breakfast than at dinner. On the other hand, a low-calorie breakfast increases appetite(食欲), especially for sweets, the researchers admitted.

The findings published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism were based on a laboratory experiment of 16 men. They consumed a low and high calorie breakfast and dinner one day—and then vice versa (反过来) on another. The study also showed increases in blood sugar and insulin concentrations, caused by eating a meal, was reduced after breakfast, but not so much after dinner. The results also showed eating a low-calorie breakfast caused sweet desires with a higher appetite. This suggests those saving all their calories for the end of the day may face consequences because they snack more.

The study adds to increasing evidence that the best way of losing weight is to eat your largest meal in the morning—and your smallest in the evening. Dr Richter, a neurobiologist at Lübeck University, said, “Eating more at breakfast instead of dinner could prevent obesity(肥胖) and high blood sugar.” Both obesity and high blood sugar can lead to many life-threatening illnesses including cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Previous research has shown DIT is lower in people with obesity. It’s seen as a measure of how well our metabolism is working.

DIT can differ depending on mealtime and is generally slower in the evening and at night due to our body clocks. Dr Richter said, “We recommend that patients with obesity as well as healthy people eat a large breakfast rather than a large dinner to reduce body weight and prevent metabolic diseases.”

Professor Daniela Jakubowicz, author of The Big Breakfast Diet, found that those who piled on the calories in the morning were more likely to feel satisfied, preventing snacking throughout the day. And another study by Professor Jakubowicz found that eating chocolate in the morning, when our metabolism is at its highest, prevented desires for sweet things later on.

There are times when I leave for my running-group sessions with little enthusiasm. It might be because I’m tired, or stressed, or don’t want to leave something else. But I’m the coach, so I can’t choose to give it a miss.

It was yet another cold, dark, wet evening and I wasn’t feeling the love as I gathered all the necessary equipment. No one in their right mind will come out in this weather, I thought. But when I turned into the car park, my headlights picked out runners making a dash through the rain to our meeting point, where others were already working out to stay warm, with chat, laughter and hugs. They, too, I realized, might be tired, stressed or busy. But, unlike me, they had a choice about whether to come running or stay at home. And that makes their decision to come---and to keep on coming---more encouraging. Then, I went home from the run feeling better than when I’d arrived.

I believe one of the strongest motivations(激励;动机) behind these runners’ decisions to come along is being part of a group. Belonging to a running community makes running greater than running itself. It’s no longer just a workout; it’s a get-together with friends, a laugh and a shared experience. It provides a chance to share your success and disappointments, to be congratulated and comforted, and, just as important, to congratulate and comfort others.

Research has long shown the possibility of staying motivated is higher when exercise takes place in a group. The reasons are many. A study at the University of Southern California found people enjoy physical activity more when they are with others and are more likely to keep it up over the long term. And research by Strava in 2017 found running in a group made runners go faster and further. Using data from 90 million runs taking place all over the world, Strava found that the average pace of runs taking place in a group was seven seconds per mile quicker than solo runs, and the distance covered was an average of 1.3 miles further.

I joke about people being more motivated to come to my running sessions by the tea and biscuits afterwards than by the running itself. It might be true, but it doesn’t matter. Those laughter-filled minutes are every bit as important as the running in between.

1.What can we infer from the first paragraph?

A.The coach was always enthusiastic.

B.The coach was never discouraged.

C.The coach was sometimes unwilling.

D.The coach was often worn out.

2.Why is being part of a group most motivational?

A.It needs a coach who can offer help.

B.It frees runners from boring daily work.

C.It helps members to beat their records.

D.It creates space for their communication.

3.That being in a group improves performance is proven by _______ .

A.taking a typical example B.performing an experiment

C.listing accurate data D.sharing his experiences

4.Tea and biscuits in running sessions are meant to _________ .

A.attract more runners from other groups

B.build up some strength before running

C.make his running group stand out of all

D.add more life to their running experience

When I awoke, it was morning. I tried to stand up, but I could not move.

At first, I thought that yesterday’s dangers had made my body too weak and too tired to move. Then, suddenly, I heard some very strange noises. As I listened, I heard the sounds of people around me, but I could see no one. “So I am not alone here! Thank God!” I thought. I tried to turn my head, but I could not move it in any direction. I turned my eyes down to look at my body and saw that I had been tied down to the ground with hundreds of small ropes.

Just at that moment, I felt something moving up my leg. It was small and light and I thought that perhaps it was a small animal like a mouse or something. I felt the thing touch my chin and looked down to see what sort of animal was climbing on me.

I had never been as shocked in my life as I was at that moment. Standing on my chest was a tiny person! The little man stood on my chest, pulled out a tiny sword, and pointed it at my head. As I stared at him in surprise, the little man shouted something in a strange language. “Hekinah degu!” he said. I had no idea what this meant, but I guessed that it was not a friendly greeting.

I did not know what to do, but I wanted to get free from the ropes. I moved my body back and forth, trying to break the ropes. When I freed my left arm, the little people began to shout loudly. Quickly, I used my arm to pull off the ropes that held my head to the ground.

A moment later, hundreds of small arrows flew through the air and hit my hands and face. They felt like tiny needles in my skin. I shouted in pain and raised my hands to cover my face. Many small men jumped onto my body and began to attack me with their swords. I guessed they were angry. I was trying to escape from them, so I decided the best thing to do was put my hands down and lie quietly.                                               (Adapted from Gulliver’s Travels)

Songkran—Thailand

If you’re in Thailand between April 13th and 15th, get ready for the world’s biggest water fight. The celebration marks the beginning of the Thai New Year, where cleansing with water is meant to purify and renew. In Bangkok or Chang Mai, the water fights can last up to six days. Hosted every year on the third Sunday of May, the race runs approximately 12km through the city. The real highlight, however, is the thousands of people dressed up in a show. Wear whatever you want: Batman suits, purple wigs (假发)...

Koninginnedag—The Netherlands

Although their Queen’s birthday is actually during the winter, she celebrates it on April 30—the country’s official “Queen’s Day” since 1949.     Kids nowadays are growing up “connected”, learning to use technology at a surprising speed. Technology is a regular part of school now! Kids as young as Kindergarten are using smartboards, IPads, and computers to complete tasks in the classroom. Older children rely on the Internet for research, getting homework, sending work to teachers, and even accessing 获得) textbooks. In fact, today’s kids have been given the name “digital(数字)natives” because they are facing technology almost from birth, so new things have never been a greater challenge in the hands of our children. The InternetFacebook, iPods, pictures and texting on cell phones and all of these are the ways kids communicate today. They have become a central part of their lives. It allows them a private life that most of us know very little about.

Kids just don’t think about the results of the new world of social networking and text messaging. They don’t think that it is dangerous to send a photo of a particular person to a foolish person, who might send it to some friends that may send it to a hundred others and the next thing you know, it’s on many Facebook sites and all over the Internet forever. They don’t think that way because they don’t have the life experience that we do. We have to help them.

The key to knowing how they manage this privacy(隐私) is our “connection” to them. How closely do we connect with our kids and pay attention to what they’re doing? And how often do we talk to our children... and really listen to them? If they believe in us and know that we will be there for them, they are more likely to follow our advice. If we talk openly about what we believe in, what we stand for, those values will become their own before long.

1.What is the author’s opinion about children?

A.They are good at accepting modern things. B.They are well understood by their parents.

C.They almost like to surf on the Facebook. D.They know the Internet dangers well.

2.What does the underlined word “us” in paragraph 1 refers to?

A.They only understand their own private lives. B.They are badly influenced by new things.

C.They do not have life experience. D.They don’t depend on their parents.

4.When will children accept their parents’ advice?

A.When they are surfing on the Internet. B.When they meet some dangerous situations.

C.When parents believe in what they are doing. D.When parents communicate with them deeply.

The clockwork radio is the only radio that doesn’t need electricity. It works by turning the handle (手柄)for a minute. Nowadays, thousands of these radios are made every day. They are bought by people in some places, where there isn’t any electricity. The clockwork radio was invented in 1991 by Trevor Bayliss, a British inventor. He had the idea within half an hour while he was listening to some news in the radio about Africa: some Africans were dying of AIDS and there was no easy way to send them information about the disease. The first one he made ran for 14 minutes before needing to turn the handle again, but one year later, it improved. However, people didn’t know it until it appeared on a television programme called Tomorrow’s World.

At the beginning, no one would help Trevor develop his idea for a new kind of radio. Finally, in 1994his invention was shown on the TV programme, and afterwards, a South African businessman watched it and decided to help him. The first Freeplay radios were built in South Africa in 1995. Since then, the radios have been a great success. And then Trevor has become famous. He has been given many awards(奖品),including one from Nelson Mandela.

Mr. Bayliss, whose latest project is a wind-up walking stick, created a website offering inventors suggestions on patenting (专利)and marketing. After that, he also invented electric shoes, which produce electricity as you walk. And the self-weighing suitcase is also his invention- you pick it up and the handle tells you how much it weighs. That’s very useful when you go to the airport.

1.When did the radio appear on Tomorrow’s World?

A.In 1991. B.In 1992. C.In 1994. D.In 1995.

2.Which of the following is the right order of the events for Mr. Bayliss?

c. His clockwork radio was welcomed by people.        d. He improved his radio.

A.acdb. B.bcda. C.cadb. D.dbca.

3.Why did Mr. Bayliss create his website?

A.To introduce his ideas about inventions. B.To help inventors with their patents.

C.To sell the clockwork radios. D.To show his awards on it

4.What is the text mainly talking about?

A.The invention of the clockwork radio. B.The good use of the clockwork radio.

C.Mr. Bayliss’ patent protection. D.Mr. Bayliss’ inventive ideas.

On August 21,I was working on my homework, a composition titling “My Hero/Heroine”. I stuck at the very beginning, trying to figure out what would be my hero/heroine.

Attracted by the cheers from the living room, I opened the door only to find my parents were watching the volleyball matches of women's final. Then I decided to take the break and joined in them. The sense of nervousness was overwhelming as the score was quite closely between China and its opponent.

To our delight, China won in the end. We couldn't help feel proud as Chinese! The volleyball players had trained so hard before and fight till the last minute. Without doubt, they were not only my heroines, and the heroines of China! I started to write my composition.

I want more—but not ______ in the material sense of personal ______ and success. I want more out of life. I want a passion as well as a dream that wouldn't let me sleep out of pure excitement. I want to spring out of bed in the morning, rain or ______, and have that enthusiasm for life that seemed so intrinsic(固有的) in the early childhood.

We become so comfortable with the life that has been ______ for us by our parents, teachers, traditions, and social standards that we feel that it's stupid and unsafe to ______ losing it for the small hope of achieving something that is more satisfying.

Taking a risk is ______ a risk. We can, and will, fail, ______ many, many, many times. But that is what makes it exciting for me. That ______ can be viewed negatively, or it can ______ us.

Failing is what makes us grow, and it makes us stronger. The fear of ______, though, is what makes us sad. So ______ I couldn't see the future as clearly as before, I took the plunge(投入) in______ that in the depths of fear and failure I would come out feeling more ______ than ever before.

There are many kinds of book clubs where members discuss a different book every month. What about dinner clubs, where people get together once a month or four times a year to make and eat dinner? In the dinner club that I joined, the hostess of the dinner club would prepare a big dinner first. Then the members would begin discussing the food. 1. .

There are two variations of a dinner club. One has a group of people who try a different restaurant once a month. 2. When they all meet, they order and share different dishes. This is a great idea, especially if you live in a big city where there are hundreds of different restaurants.

3. One way is to have the hostess for the month decide on a type of food. The hostess is responsible for cooking the entrees. The other members make different courses at home, like salad and dessert, and bring them to the dinner club. For an even more exciting and interactive type of dinner clubs, the entire group comes together in the hostess’ kitchen. 4. In this way the members of the group not only learn about different types of food, but also different methods of cooking.

The great thing about a dinner club is that it serves in many different ways. You can make the dinner club even more special one month by inviting partners. 5. A stay-at-home mother can get a couple of other stay-at-home mothers together and start a children’s lunch club. If you have a group of friends that love to get together and experiment with different types of food, the possibilities are endless!

A.They prepare the entire meal in a group effort.

B.Usually one member decides on the restaurant.

C.This was the beginning of our dinner club.

D.They are like-minded people with similar education level.

E.The second kind of dinner clubs has many different forms.

F.It offers regular well-organized social events in selected places.

G.Couples can get together for some food and great conversations.

If you’ve ever been on a fishing boat, you’ve probably seen crowds of birds following it, hoping to catch a snack. Now scientists use those birds’ behavior to track illegal fishing boats.

Researchers attached data loggers to the backs of 169 albatrosses (信天翁) in Indian oceans. Weighing only 42 grams, the devices included a GPS, which enabled them to detect the presence and intensity of radar signals emitting from boats. That information was then sent by satellite, so the researchers could track the location of the birds—and thus the radar-emitting boats—in real time.

The scientists then cross-checked that data against the known locations of boats, collected from a system boats use to declare themselves, called the Automatic Identification System (AIS). And noticeable differences appeared frequently.

More than a third of the times the birds “loggers” detected radar signals, and therefore a boat, but no such boat appeared in the official log—meaning that the vehicles had likely switched off their AIS—something that probably happens in illegal fishing operations.

The work suggests birds could be an effective boat-monitoring tool as long as illegal fishing operations don’t target the birds.

Fortunately, such a task would be difficult. Around fishing boats, you can find hundreds of birds at any one time that are flying around. And the birds with loggers are not marked in any way. So it’s not really possible for fishermen to pick out a specific bird.

But what concerns researchers is that albatrosses often get caught by some fishing boats. Though regulations have been established to protect against that happening—with success—illegal boats don’t necessarily obey. So scientists might be underestimating the risk posed to albatross populations.

1.What characteristic of albatrosses do scientists take advantage of in their research?

A.Their feeding patterns.

B.Their sense of direction.

C.Their greedy behaviors.

D.Their habit of following fishing boats.

2.For what purpose does a boat shut off its AIS?

A.To seek more fishes.

B.To have it mistaken for another.

C.To avoid being detected.

D.To save the trouble of declaring itself.

3.What does “such a task” in Paragraph 6 refer to?

A.Identifying birds with loggers.

B.Monitoring illegal boats.

C.Tracking radar signals automatically.

D.Fishing illegally.

4.What could be the best title for the text?

A.AIS: an Effective System to Locate Boats

B.Humans Are Good at Discovering Birds’ Nature

C.Data Loggers Help Fishermen Get a Good Harvest

D.Scientists Use Birds to Track Illegal Fishing Operations

Public transport is declining in the rich world. To those who have to squeeze onto the number 25 bus in London, or the A train in New York, the change might not be noticeable. But public transport is becoming less busy in those places, and passenger numbers are flat or falling in almost every American city despite healthy growth in urban populations and employment.

Although transport agencies blame their unpopularity on things like roadworks and broken signals, it seems more likely that they are being outcompeted. App-based taxi services like Uber and Lyft are more comfortable and convenient than trains or buses. Cycling is nicer than it was, and rental bikes are more widely available. Cars are cheap to buy, thanks to cut-rate loans, and ever cheaper to run. Online shopping, home working and office-sharing mean more people can avoid travelling altogether.

The competition is only likely to grow. More than one laboratory is developing new transport technologies and applications. Silicon Valley invented Uber and, more recently, apps that let people rent electric scooters(滑板车) and then abandon them on the pavement. China created sharing-bicycles and battery-powered "e-bikes", both of which are spreading.

Transport agencies should accept the upstarts(新兴方式), and copy them. Cities tend either to ignore app-based services or to try to push them off the streets. That is understandable, given the rules-are-for-losers attitude of firms like Uber. But it is an error.

It is doubtful that most people make hard distinctions between public and private transport. They just want to get somewhere, and there is a cost in time, money and comfort. An ideal system would let them move across a city for a single payment, transferring from trains to taxis to bicycles as needed. Building a platform to allow that is hard, and requires much effort of traditional networks as well as technology firms. It is probably the secret to keeping cities moving.

1.What is the change in public transport in big cities?

A.It is becoming busier.

B.It is getting less popular.

C.There are fewer traffic delays.

D.There is more new transport.

2.In the author’s opinion, the reason for the decline of public transport is that ______.

A.there are roadworks and broken signals.

B.people are becoming healthier and employed.

C.cars and bikes are more and more available.

D.transport agencies are seemingly less competitive.

3.How does the author develop his idea in Paragraph 3?

A.By giving examples

B.By providing research results

C.By stating arguments

D.By comparing different approaches

4.According to the text, the key to keeping cities moving is ____________.

A.to develop an ideal system that satisfies everyone.

B.to provide people with more means of transportation.

C.to build a good platform that appeals to transport agencies.

D.to make traditional networks and technology firms cooperate.

It was the Olympic final day earlier this month, but this was an Olympics with a difference. Over the last five months, local and regional competitions have been held across Kenya for Maasai men of "warrior" age as part of the Maasai Olympics 2018. December 15 marked the final round with crowds gathering in Kimana, near the Amboseli National Park, about 200 km south of Narobi. Cash prizes and medals are in store for the winning individuals and communities.

International Charity Born Free Foundation is a main sponsor of the event which has been held every two years since 2012 to offer Maasai and warriors an alternative to(作为......

的替代)killing lions as part of their traditional ceremony. It was the idea of the Wildlife Charity Big Life Foundation and eight Maasai elders who wanted to "stop lion hunting by our warriors once and for all, making it a cultural taboo(禁忌)”.

"As soon as we understood the idea for the Maasai Olympics, we were attracted by the excitement, and inspired by the complete sense of this great plan," said Born Free Foundation's CEO Howard Jones. "As human populations grow and our wants seem to increase, with little sympathy for those other species with whom we share the planet, the pressing needed for coexistence is urgent. And examples of how this may be achieved are few and far between."

"About 2,000 lions remain in Kenya, and Born Free works to monitor the population, ease human-wildlife conflict and promote coexistence. "added Jones. “The Maasai live and work alongside lions and other wildlife, so they play a key role in their protection and conservation. However, the Maasai also have a 500-year-old tradition of hunting lions when men reach warrior age."

The Maasai Olympics were developed to encourage young men to compete in an organized sports competition based on their traditional warrior skills. They compete in six events (5,000 m, 800m, 200m, high jump, etc.) and there are also two events (1,500m and 100m) for women. As well as the competitive element, the event also aims to educate local people about conserving lions and other wildlife, and the importance of human-wildlife coexistence and tolerance.

1.What do we know about the Maasai Olympics according to the text?

A.They are only accessible to men.

B.They had been held four times by 2018.

C.They are held in the Amboseli National Park.

D.They honour winners with the title of hero.

2.What can we learn about the Maasai Olympics traditional ceremony?

A.It is primitive and unacceptable.

B.It is a proof of their being sympathetic.

C.It is the result of human-wildlife conflict.

D.It is highly regarded by Born Free Foundation.

3.Which of the following might NOT be the aim of Born Free Foundation?

A.To change the lifestyle of lions in Kenya.

B.To ease human-wildlife conflict in Kenya.

C.To monitor the population of lions in Kenya.

D.To promote coexistence of humans and lions in Kenya.

4.What does Howard Jones try to express in Para. 4?

A.Humans and wildlife cannot benefit each other.

B.The Maasai should not interfere with wildlife.

C.Humans should live in harmony with wildlife.

D.The Masssai should not give up their old tradition.

Everyone will be full of respect when mentioned a mother’s love. Truly, who can love you more than your dear mother does in world? But in modern society, especial among one-child families, mothers usually give too much love to her only daughter or son. They try to help or even protecting their children in every way, which left their sons or daughters too comfortable to deal with challenges themselves.

What we all know, we have entered into the 21st century, and the young generation will face more challenges in the future. There is nothing wrong for mothers to love their children, and they should also leave rooms for their children to develop themselves and become independent.

If you are asked to chair a meeting, remember the following golden rules for meeting management.

Assign a note-taker or arrange to have the meeting audio-taped. You may need to refer back to an issue that was discussed during the meeting at a later date. 1.

2. So many times we think we are going to say and, in the process, block out valid points that other group members may be contributing. Additionally, we often hear only what we want to hear, rather than really listening to other people. Meetings that are characterized by effective listening are successful meetings.

Give everyone an opportunity to be heard. 3. As the leader of the meeting, you need to keep an open mind and make sure everyone feels welcome to contribute and express ideas without criticism.

4. Many times important issues can get sidetracked in a meeting, especially when everyone has a different opinion about the topic. If you anticipate a conflict prior to the meeting, discuss the issue with participants in advance. If an unanticipated (未预料到的) conflict develops once the meeting is in progress, ask participants involved in the conflict to meet with you after the meeting. Doing so will minimize the chances of wasting participants’ valuable time.

End on time. If you said the meeting would last no longer than one hour, make sure the meeting last for an hour.5. Running late with a meeting makes members late for other appointments, increases the chances that members will mentally leave the meeting, and reduces your credibility (可靠性) as an effective meeting manager.

A.Learn to listen.

B.Start the meeting on time.

C.Keep the discussion on track.

D.Good record-keeping is a sign of good meeting manager as well.

E.Some people tend to monopolize (独占) meetings, while others wait to be asked.

F.You can appoint a sub committee to look into the problem in order to save time.

G.Meeting participants tend to plan the rest of their day according to the meeting schedule.

Calling someone a “birdbrain” is considered rude. It implies that someone has a small brain and thus is not smart. A new study found that the expression doesn’t do birds justice either. Birds’ brains are much bigger than we thought-at least compared to their small bodies.

An international team of 37 scientists measured the brain volume of hundreds of dinosaurs and extinct birds by scanning fossils of their skulls. The readings were compared to a large database containing the brain sizes of modern birds. These measurements were then analyzed, taking into consideration each bird’s body size-resulting in something called “relative brain size”. The results showed that a dramatic change of birds’ body size happened right after the mass extinction of dinosaurs 66 million years ago.

According to the study, published on April 23 in the journal Current Biology, birds and non-avian (非鸟类的) dinosaurs had similar brain sizes before the extinction. After the extinction of the dinosaurs, however, birds had to find a way to survive, so they shrank their bodies-since smaller animals need less food-but they kept their big brains.

“The changed landscape may have caused the rapid evolution of new brain-body scaling patterns (缩放比例) by favoring both larger brains and smaller bodies,” US paleontologist (古生物学家) Daniel Ksepka, who is the lead author of the study, told CNN.

This “evolutionary brain leap”-as scientists call it-also happened very rapidly. Without dinosaurs, birds quickly repopulated. They came in all types and sizes, which contributed to the diverse species of birds we see today.

But among all the bird species, certain ones “show above average rates of brain and body size evolution”, study co-author Adam Smith at Clemson University, US, said in a statement-with crows and parrots being the most evident. In fact, previous studies have already discovered that these birds have an amazing cognitive ability. They are able to use tools, imitate human speech and even remember human faces.

So, in the words of Smith, “calling someone ‘bird-brained’ is actually quite a compliment!”

1.How did scientists learn the brain sizes of dinosaurs and extinct birds?

A.By referring to a database.

B.By analyzing their body size.

C.By studying their fossil skulls.

D.By examining the brain size of modem birds.

2.What were birds’ brains like after the extinction of the dinosaurs?

A.They were the same size as non-avian dinosaurs.

B.They shrank to adapt to the environment.

C.They kept growing to avoid extinction.

D.They remained as big as they were before.

3.According to Adam Smith, what do we know about birds?

A.Their brain evolution happened very rapidly.

B.Some species evolved to be smarter than others.

C.Crows and parrots have the largest bird brains.

D.Birds have amazing abilities to copy human speech.

4.What is the purpose of this text?

A.To explain the origin of the word “birdbrain”.

B.To describe how a bird evolved through history.

C.To present a new study on birds’ brain size.

D.To reveal reasons for the rapid growth of bird populations.

During the outbreak of novel coronavirus, cities are locked down and borders are closed. Science, on the contrary, is becoming more open. And this “open science” is already making a difference.

Soon after the epidemic (流行病) started in China, a research team from Fudan University in Shanghai successfully sequenced (测定序列) the DNA of the virus. But they didn’t keep the information to themselves. Instead, they placed the sequences on GenBank, an open-access data platform, so researchers around the world could download them for free and start studying the virus.

Due to this openness, companies producing drugs across the globe are now able to work at the same time to develop a vaccine (疫苗). “There may be room for multiple different vaccines for different purposes and different age groups,” Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security in the US, told Al Jazeera. “The bigger menu we have of vaccines, the more flexible we’ll be when fighting against coronavirus outbreaks in the future.”

Major drug companies around the world are also sharing their study results. Remdesivir, a drug originally developed by US company Gilead Sciences to treat Ebola, is found to be promising in fighting against the novel coronavirus. Currently, two trials of the drug are already underway in China, and the results might be available as soon as April, according to The Verge.

This openness in science is going to be even more important in the future. “With climate change, increasing globalization, and population shifts, epidemics will not go away, and might even become more frequent,” Dan Barouch, a Harvard Medical School professor, told Harvard Magazine.

He said, “No one group can do everything. It has to be a cooperative approach. But I do think that the world has a greater sense of readiness this time to develop knowledge, drugs, and treatment very rapidly.”

Every epidemic is indeed a crisis, but it can also be a learning opportunity. One redeeming (补偿的) factor of the COVID-19 outbreak is that it is helping science adapt for the better.

4.Which of the following would Dan Barouch probably disagree with?

A.Epidemics will be less frequent thanks to climate change.

B.The world is becoming better prepared to deal with epidemics.

C.No single group can fight against the epidemics independently.

D.The increase in globalization may bring about more epidemics.

What is a family? Why does it matter? What does it teach us that we can’t learn on our own? These questions seem especially relevant in the holiday season when it is often our tradition to gather as families and celebrate together.

My mother was one of twelve children. As they grew up, married and had children of their own, most of them lived near enough to gather for holidays at my grandparents’ home in a small town in the mountains of North Carolina.

I don’t recall getting many gifts from them .I remember the sense of belonging, of being part of something that assured me I was loved and not alone.

I delighted in the laughing, playing and fighting with my crazy cousins. I watched my granddad and uncles sit on the porch, rain or shine, smoking and joking, arguing about politics and trying to solve the problems of the world. I listened to my grandmother, mother and aunts stir (搅拌) pots on the stove and talk about their lives, hopes, dreams and disappointments, and gossip about any sister who failed to show up.

The food was always plentiful and delicious-country ham, sweet potatoes, green beans, biscuits and my grandmother’s banana pudding. But for me, the food was never the highlight. The highlight was simply being together. A family.

However, they’re all gone now. My parents and grandparents, my aunts and uncles have left this world for the next. My cousins are scattered here and there. And yet the memories linger, along with the love that we shared.

I treasure those memories and the things they taught me. They told me that families aren’t perfect, but they prepare us to find our way in an imperfect world. They made me realize that all families are crazy in their own particular ways.

My husband and I are growing a new family, while keeping close to the surviving members of the families. It’s a beautiful blend (混合) of kindness, traditions, nurturing (养育) and friendships, which grows year after year.

I hope this holiday season will fill you with lovely memories of the family that raised you, and surround you with all the people who mean “family” to you now.

A mother is a person who, seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.

—Tenneva Jordan

I knew I was not supposed to be quite so excited. I was too old for that. At age eleven, the oldest and my mom's "grown up" girl, I had to keep my cool. I was in middle school after all. But every chance I got, when I was alone, I checked each present under the tree. I read every tag and felt every package, guessing at the contents within. I had examined each gift so often that I could tell which present went to which person without even looking at the tags.

It had been a tough year for my family. Whenever my mom looked over at the tree and scattered(撒) presents, she would sigh and warn us, "There won't be as much for Christmas this year. Try not to be disappointed." Christmas had traditionally been a time for my parents to spoil us. In years past, the presents would pile up and spill out from under the tree, taking over the living room. I had heard the phrase "giving is better than receiving," but thought that whoever had said that must have been out of their mind. Getting presents was the whole point! It was the reason I couldn't get to sleep on Christmas Eve.

On Christmas morning, we eagerly waited in the hallway until Dad told us everything was ready. We rushed into the living room and let the wrapping paper fly. We made weak attempts to wait and watch while other family members opened their presents, but as the time passed we lost our self-control.

"Here's another one for you,” said Mom as she handed me a package. I looked at it, confused. Having spent so much time examining the presents before Christmas, I recognized this one. But it had not been mine. It was my mom's. A new label had been put on it, with my name written in my mother's handwriting.

"Mom, I can't...”
