Choosing the right career can be hard. Many people graduate from school or college not knowing what to do with their lives, and get a job without really thinking about it. For some, things work out fine. 1. Your working life lasts an average of forty years, so it's important to find a job you like and feel enthusiastic about. Luckily, there are many ways you can get help to do this.

The Australian website, www.careersonline.com, compares choosing a career with going to the movies. Before you see a movie, you find out what films are showing. 2.— find out what jobs are available and what your options are. Next, decide which movie you like best; if you're not a romantic person, you won't want to see a love story. In other words, with your career, you should decide which job will suit your personality. 3. Meanwhile, you should find out where the theater is before you go. With your career, you need to find information about where you can work, how much you will earn, and how to get a job in that profession.

So, how do you start? Begin by asking yourself some questions. 4. Have you travel overseas? Do you have any extra certificates besides your degree, such as a first aid license, for example? Your physical state and build can also affect which jobs you can do. A person, for example, who is allergic to cats would probably never become a veterinarian. Flight attendants, firefighters, and police officers have to be over a certain height, and be physically fit. 5. Are you outgoing and extroverted, or shy and introverted? If you like working alone, a job that requires lots of teamwork might not suit you.

A.Your personality matters, too.

B.Finally, decide how to get movie tickets.

C.The site suggests you do the same with your career.

D.Choosing a career can take time and a lot of thought.

E.Some jobs require you to have certain life experiences.

F.But others often find themselves stuck in a job they hate.

G.When you know you can work in your dream job, you'll be glad.

Carbon dioxide isn’t just a greenhouse gas that’s thinning the atmosphere, but it’s also causing a popular food to lose its nutritional value over time, which will have a major impact on more than 2 billion people worldwide.

According to a recent study conducted in a joint effort by researchers in Japan, China, Australian, and the United States, higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere contribute to the decline of protein(蛋白质)and other key vitamins in rice. The study, published in the journal Science Advances, looked at 18 different agriculture sites in China and Japan over four years and found that the crops exposed to higher levels of carbon dioxide were overall less nutritious than those that were not.

“Many basic crops are impacted by the rise of carbon dioxide with respect to things like protein concentration and iron and zinc,” says Lewis Ziska, a co-author and research plant physiologist at the US Department of Agriculture. The research explains that the exposed rice contained 10 percent less protein,8 percent less iron, and 5 percent less zinc, while amounts of B1,B2 and B5 vitamins also declined. And increased levels of carbon dioxide doesn’t just have a negative effect on rice, but other food staples(主食)including wheat and potatoes also face serious consequences when exposed to higher levels.

While this certainly impacts many people worldwide, it follows that the people that would suffer the most would be those that consume the most rice, which, as the study also found, also happen to be those who live in the poorest countries.

Additional studies are now underway and researchers are trying to solve this problem by looking at the different types of each crop in hopes of finding the types that react the least, or not at all, to high levels of carbon dioxide.

Until then, what can you do? For starters, you can try to eat a variety of foods and get your vitamins and proteins from various sources. Then to help with the larger problem of global warming and climate change, you can make simple lifestyle changes such as hang drying clothes, walking to work, and turning off the lights when you’re not home.

1.What is the effect of higher levels of carbon dioxide?

A.It increases protein content in rice. B.It causes nutrient loss in crops.

C.It improves agricultural productivity. D.It directly affects people’s health.

2.Who may suffer most from the rise of carbon dioxide?

A.Those who eat the most rice. B.Those who eat wheat and potatoes.

C.Those who live in rich countries. D.Those exposed to higher levels of carbon dioxide.

3.What does the underlined word“underway”in para.5 mean?

A.Under the ground B.Under control

C.In the way D.In progress

4.How can we solve the problem caused by higher levels of carbon dioxide?

A.By developing new types of crops.

B.By eating more fresh foods.

C.By having different types of foods.

D.By changing the existing lifestyle totally

Denmark is only about half the size of South Carolina, but it produces more of its electricity from wind than any other country in the world. Denmark now gets 47%of its electricity from wind, and there will be more to come, thanks to a combination of history and policy.

Paul la Cour was a scientist and inventor who experimented with early wind power machines at the start of the 20th century. So it's not surprising that Denmark invested in building wind power the earliest. Since the 1970s,Denmark has been investing in wind energy all over the country. In the 1980s,due to a strong movement opposing nuclear power plants, Denmark increased its production of clean energy even before many other countries considered it.

Even back in 2002,Denmark took climate change warnings seriously. They drew up policies, aiming to cut fossil-fuel emissions by 20%,which they did via renewable energy investment. Some of the world's largest companies in the field—including Vestas, which builds turbines(涡轮机)and Orsted, which specializes in offshore wind projects—are Danish, so the country has an impact beyond its borders.

The huge impact of Denmark’s wind industry is important. But Denmark is a small country, so while almost 50%of its electricity from wind is admirable, it's also minor in terms of entire global impact.

While Denmark gets half its electricity from 5,758 megawatts (MW) of capacity, Spain's 23,000 MW covers just 18 percent of its electricity supply as it’s a much bigger country. China is the leader in wind energy at 221,000 MW, and the U.S.is the second in the world at about 96,000 MW.

At the end of 2019,lawmakers in Denmark set a new goal: increasing the share of electricity coming from renewable power to 100%.

1.What can we know about Demark?

A.It is a leader in solar energy. B.It is a pioneer in clean energy.

C.It is a victim of climate change. D.It is an advocate of nuclear energy.

2.What is Denmark government's attitude towards fossil-fuel energy projects?

A.Indifferent. B.Ambiguous

C.Positive. D.Opposed.

3.Which country produces the most wind energy in the world?

A.Denmark. B.China. C.The U.S D.Spain.

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.Almost Half of Denmark’s Electricity Comes from Wind Power

B.Denmark's Government Pushes ahead with Fossil-fuel Projects

C.Denmark Has a Great Effect on World's Wind Power Equipment

D.Denmark Has a Long History of Developing Renewable Power

More than 30 years ago, there was a well-known boxer named Eugene Hart. Hart was heavily favored to win his next round against an ungifted boxer, Antuofermo. It was said that the only thing that Antuofermo could do was “he bled well". However, here was an important thing. He had good qualities that you couldn't see.

During the fight, Hart controlled Antuofermo, knocking him down and giving him a good beating. Antuofermo absorbed the punishment that was dealt to him by his naturally superior opponent, and he did it so well that Hart became discouraged. In the fifth round, Hart began to tire, not physically but mentally. Taking advantage of the situation, Antuofermo attacked and knocked Hart down, thus ending the fight.

When the fighters went back to their temporary restrooms, only a thin curtain was between them. Hart's room was quiet, but on the other side he could hear Antuofermo's coach talking about who would take the fighter to the hospital. Finally he heard Antuofermo saying, "Every time he hit me with that left hook (左勾拳)to the body, I thought I was going to quit. After the second round, I thought if he hit me there again, I'd quit. I thought the same thing after the fourth round. But he stopped hitting me there."

At that moment, Hart began to weep. He was crying because for the first time he under- stood that Antuofermo had felt the same way he had and even worse. And the only thing that distinguished the guy who was talking from the guy who was crying was perseverance (毅力). The coward (懦夫)and the hero had the same emotions. They're both humans.

The important question to ask yourself here is this How does each man respond to the tough situation that they are experiencing? Maybe you are in a tough position right now or, if not, one might be coming. How will you react? Like a hero or a coward?

1.What can we learn from paragraph 1?

A.Hart was an ordinary boxer.

B.Antuofermo was hardly defeated.

C.Hart was believed to win the game.

D.Antuofermo was gifted in boxing.

2.How did Antuofermo win the fight?

A.He trained hard before the fight.

B.Hart became discouraged by his coach.

C.He was confident about his boxing talent and power.

D.He dealt with the punishment properly and grasped the chance.

3.Why did Hart cry after the fight?

A.He realized he was just mentally defeated.

B.He was hurt and sent to a hospital.

C.He lost the game easily.

D.He was considered to be a coward.

4.What are Antuofermo's qualities?

A.Hard-work and honesty. B.Humor and intelligence.

C.Perseverance and determination. D.Enthusiasm and responsibility.

For many freshmen (新生), this will really be your first time to handle money on your own. You will have difficulty handling budgets. Here are some amazing tips for you.

Keep track of personal finances

1.. This is how you become truly independent. Actually, in this case, there are now a lot of convenient APPs on your smart phone that can give you a real time image of your money and spending.

Use credit responsibly

Building credit is important, and so is opening your first credit card. 2.. Then, look for a card with no annual fee, good rewards and a reasonable interest rate.

3.

The easiest way to start is to save all your coins and changes every week into a savings account with no ATM card. This seemingly insignificant amount adds up over time and starts the habit of saving.

Get a flexible job

Getting a job in college is practical, because you can earn “spending money” and even save some to put toward books, supplies, and your student loans. 4., which have limited responsibilities. These types of work allow you to make money and finish your schooling.

Network for your future career

No money item could be more important than your network, because the quickest way to get a job is all about who you know, and not totally dependent on your grades. 5..

A.Learn to start saving a little each month

B.There are many on-campus jobs out there

C.The first step is to start keeping accounts for yourself

D.Ask the salespeople to explain detailed points to you

E.Open an account without delay when it’s convenient

F.But your job can have a negative effect on your study

G.This could benefit you more than opening up a credit card

Roughly 8. 5 billion plastic straws are used in the United Kingdom each year, but as a new ban takes effect next April, that number will decrease to zero. One startup (初创企业) is hoping to capture the chance to make a kind of straws as an alternative by using an unlikely material: pasta (意大利面食).

“It has all the function of a plastic straw that everyone has been using,” says Maxim Gelmann, founder of Stroodles, the startup. The straws, made by an Italian company that also produces regular pasta, are the same shape and size as a standard plastic straw.

Unlike a paper straw, they don’t taste like wet paper; they don’t change the flavor of the drink. They last at least an hour, and longer in colder drinks. If you’re nursing a drink for hours and the pasta eventually softens, you can choose to eat it. The raw straw is also eatable, and Gelmann says that some people snack on them.

A handful of other pasta-straw startups also exist, though Stroodles is hoping to feature itself with a smoother, more plastic-like material and its branding.

It’s more expensive to make than a plastic straw, but at large volumes, it can compete with the cost of paper straws. Because of the coming ban, “No one really compares us with plastic anymore,” Gelmann says. “They compare us with paper straw prices, which makes my argument much easier and my expectation brighter.”

Other alternatives, like bamboo or stainless steel, are more expensive and a less elegant solution; some bars say that customers don’t trust the idea that stainless steel straws can be fully sanitized (消毒). Another option—a plastic-like eatable straw made from seaweed—may be more of a competitor.

1.What’s the startup’s main purpose of producing the pasta straws?

A.To reduce the consumption of energy.

B.To take over the market.

C.To answer the call for the ban.

D.To compete with paper straws.

2.What advantage do the pasta straws have compared with other straws?

A.They are cheaper. B.They can be used longer.

C.They can be treated as snacks. D.They are suitable for mass production.

3.What attitude does Gelmann have towards the pasta straws’ future?

A.Controversial. B.Doubtful.

C.Cautious. D.Positive.

4.What can be inferred from the text?

A.The government disagrees with Gelmann.

B.The startup will become a very big company.

C.The pasta straws face fierce competition.

D.The pasta straws can improve drinks’ flavor.

Tests, after-school activities and problems at home can increase stress for students. But research now suggests that the main reason for the students’ rising anxiety levels is something else.

A psychology professor Jean Twenge said “What a lot of teens told me is that using social media and their phones seems forced. This use of phones has led to a loss of sleep and face-to- face interactions.” Last year, in the journal Pediatrics three researchers wrote that too much social media use might contribute to the development of mental health problems in teenagers, such as loneliness, depressive symptoms and anxiety.

Researchers are still not sure whether phones cause student depression or depression causes phone use. Yet 70 percent of teens see anxiety and depression as major problems among their peers, according to a February Pew Research Center report.

Schools are starting to take steps to deal with the problem. Many public schools pay outside companies to watch students’ social media activity for signs of pain. Some schools have organized some events in which people do not use their electronic devices. Belfast Area High School in Maine had one such event in April. About 20 percent of students and school employees took part, demonstrating the influence that the technology has on their daily life.

Emily Mogavero, a 17-year-old student in New York, said “I definitely feel stressed to keep up my information and stuff. It kind of worries me that I’m on my smart phone so long.” Mogavero said she sometimes puts her phone out of reach or powers it down so she doesn’t hear anything.

Some parents are not letting their children get smart phones until they grow up. A teacher, Erin Schifferli, says her 12-year-old daughter, Aeva, won’t get a phone until she is 16 years old. Deirdre Birmingham of Montclair signed on a campaign called “Wait Until Eighteen” because she didn’t think her video game-loving 10-year-old son was ready for a smart phone.

1.What’s the main cause of teenagers’ mental problems according to the text?

A.Being addicted to social media. B.Being lacking in enough sleep.

C.Too much homework. D.Too many activities.

2.What does Mogavero think of using smart phones too much?

A.It is necessary. B.It is worrying.

C.It is reasonable. D.It is meaningless.

3.How can parents deal with the children’s problem?

A.Help their children grow up quickly.

B.Stop their children using smart phones.

C.Pay more attention to children’s study.

D.Sign on more campaigns to make a difference.

4.What can we learn from the text?

A.Over-using phones influences teens’ social interactions.

B.70 percent of people have anxiety and depression.

C.Almost all the students liked the schools’ activities.

D.The findings of the research are very definite.

My youngest son has a severe form of autism (自闭症). Even though he is in his twenties now, he still has the mind of a young child.

He speaks only a few words. He is lost in his own world most of the time. Things I find silly delight him and little changes that wouldn’t bother me at all bother him greatly. He will tear things up and cry for no reason that I can see. He will even hit himself.

It always hurts me to see him suffer this way especially when there is little I can do. This morning was particularly trying for him. He tore up a new shirt I’d bought him and cried on and off for an hour. Finally he calmed down again. However, I was still feeling stressed and exhausted. I sat down before my computer to see if I could get a little work done.

As I was turning it on, though, I heard my son laugh for the first time all day. I turned my head and saw him standing directly under the glass angel hanging from our ceiling fan. The light from our house lamps seemed to shine all around him like a gold ring. His eyes shone too as the little angel swung gently above his head. He laughed again and smiled at me, saying, “Mom, I love you”.

At that moment my heart opened. I could see that the miracle (奇迹) was reminding me that my son was more than his autism. I instead saw the shining soul within. I saw the love and light of his spirit and knew he was here for a purpose. My eyes watered and I feel grateful for this minor miracle and gentle reminder of his love for me.

Miracles are all around usbut we can’t always see them with our eyes. We often have to see them with our hearts. Keep your heart open to them then. And let yourself be the miracle you were meant to be!

1.What do we know about the author’s son?

A.Little changes seldom bother him.

B.His physical condition is very good.

C.He treats others rudely and impolitely.

D.He isn’t mature for his age.

2.What does the underlined word “trying” in paragraph 3 mean?

A.Interesting. B.Puzzling.

C.Annoying. D.Embarressing.

3.Why were the author’s eyes full of tears?

A.Because she saw her son’s love for her.

B.Because the little angel comforted her son.

C.Because the light from lamps seemed to shine.

D.Because she heard her son’s laughter for the first time.

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.The glass angel is swinging B.Disease can be cured accidentally

Dear Sir,

I am a student from Yucai School in Xi’an, Shannxi Province. Informed that you were looking for a student to serve as a spokesman for pandas, I am very exciting. I hope that I can get the opportunity to do something else for pandas. I have been the panda lover since my childhood. Pandas are so lovely that they bring us comfortable and pleasure. They are regarded as a treasure of our country’s. Unfortunately, such a lovely species is now facing with the danger of becoming extinct (灭绝的) . That I am eager to do is raise people’s awareness of protect pandas. I would appreciate if I could be chosen as a spokesman.

How to stay focused in class

Being relaxed during class is a bad habit and it is also bad to your grade Focusing in class not only proves to teachers that you are a capable student but also shows that you have the ability to control yourself which will be very important

1. No matter how much you want to sit with your friends during the class try your best to avoid them Talking with friends around you is not going to give you the focus in class This will get you into trouble

Look at teacher and make eye contact Your teacher is not just standing up there talking2. Show the teacher that he or she has your full attention by looking them in the eye This person should have your full attention at all times during class

Take notes By taking notes you'll be able to "get into" the lesson Write down key points as your teacher speaks And listen to the key phrases such as "This is  important" "This is the main idea" "This will be the test" etc3.

Get involved in class discussions This is a wonderful way to become a more focused successful student When a teacher asks a question offer to answer it4.This shows the teacher that you are listening carefully during the class

Ask a question5.This really shows your teacher that you want to be better and can recognize the things you are having difficulty with Chances are that someone else in the class has the same question and was too afraid to ask!). They'll be relieved and so will you

A.Avoid sitting with friends

B.This can help you listen more attentively

C.If he or she ask for an opinion share your own

D.Talking with friends makes you lose interest in class

E.He or she is trying to give you an acceptable education

F.The more quickly you answer the more attention you pay

G.If you don't understand something never be afraid to ask

It’s true that quite a few most respected scientific authorities have confirmed that the world is becoming hotter and hotter. There’s also strong evidence that humans are contributing to the warming. Countless recent reports have proved the same thing. For instance, a 2010 summary about the climate science by the Royal Society noted that: “The global warming over the last half-century has been caused mainly by human activity.”

You may not believe that humans could change the planet’s climate, but the basic science is well understood. Each year, billions of tons of greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere because of human activity. As has been known for years, these gases hold heat that would otherwise escape to space, wrapping the planet in an invisible blanket.

Of course, the earth’s climate has always been changing due to “natural” factors such as volcanic eruption or changes in solar, or cycles concerning the Earth’s going around the sun. According to the scientific research, however, the warming observed by now matches the pattern of warming we would expect from a build-up of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere—not the warming we would expect from other possible causes.

Even if scientists did discover another reasonable explanation for the warming recorded so far, that would give birth to a difficult question. As Robert Henson puts it: “If some newly discovered factor is to blame for the climate change, then why aren’t carbon dioxide and the other greenhouse gases producing the warming that basic physics tells us they should be?”

The only way to prove with 100% certainty that humans are responsible for global warming would be to run an experiment with two identical Earths — one with human influence and one without. That obviously isn’t possible, and so most scientists are careful not to state human influence as an absolute certainty.

1.The text is developed by ________.

A.giving typical examples

B.following the order of space

C.comparing and finding differences

D.analyzing a theory and arguing it

2.Which of the following statements is right according to the passage?

A.Few scientific authorities have confirmed the existence of global warming.

B.Greenhouse gases prevent heat in the atmosphere from escaping to space.

C.Some new factors for the climate change have been discovered by scientists.

D.Scientists are absolutely sure about the human influence on the earth’s climate.

3.The underline word “identical” in the last paragraph probably means ________.

A.exactly the same B.totally different

C.extremely important D.partly independent

4.Which of the following can be the best title?

A.Are Humans Definitely Causing Global Warming?

B.Are All the Scientists Really Scientific?

C.Where Is Global Warming Leading Us to?

D.What’s the Relation of Global Warming and Greenhouse Gases?

Americans recognize that there is a past on which the present rests. But they have not developed their sense of the depth of time as much as this has been done in the Middle East and South Asia. The Arab looks back two to six thousand years for his own origins. History is used as the basis for almost any modern action. The chances are that an Arab won’t start a talk or a speech or analyze a problem without first developing the historical aspects of his subject. The American assumes that time has depths but seldom stresses the importance of it.

The American never questions the fact that time should be planned and future events should be fitted into a schedule. He thinks that people should look forward to the future and not talk too much on the past. His future is not very far ahead of him. Results must be obtained in the foreseeable future—one or two years or, at the most, five or ten. Promises to meet deadlines and appointments are taken very seriously. There is real punishment for being late and for not keeping commitments in time. The American thinks it is natural to calculate the value of time. To fail to do so is unthinkable. The American calculates how much time is required to do everything. “I’ll be there in ten minutes.” “It will take six months to finish that job.” “I was in the Army for four and a half years.”

The Americans, like so many other people, also use time as a link that chains events together. If one event occurs on the heels (紧接着) of another, they will certainly try to find a causal relationship between them. If A is seen around the area of B’s murder shortly after the crime has been committed, they automatically form a connection between A and B. However, events which are separated by too much time are difficult for them to connect in their minds. This makes it almost impossible for them as a nation to engage (从事) in long-range planning.

1.How do Americans see past time according to the first paragraph?

A.It’s worthless. B.It’s limited.

C.It reflects today. D.It helps start a talk.

2.What does the underlined phrase “to do so” in paragraph 2 refer to?

A.To calculate the value of the past.

B.To figure out the importance of time.

C.To plan a schedule for future events.

D.To meet deadlines and appointments.

3.When will Americans chain two events together?

A.When common evidence is found.

B.When A is found near the scene of B’s crime.

C.When the two events happen one by one.

D.When one event happens long after another.

4.What does the author mainly want to tell Americans to do?

A.See time further. B.Be punctual.

C.Study the past time. D.Make a long-range plan.

My husband and I were taking care of Lizzy, our daughter Melanie’s pet dog, on April 17 while Melanie was in the early stages of labour at the hospital. We received a text from our son-in-law, Joe Levanti, that Melanie was about to give birth. Tom and I sprang from our chairs suddenly. It’s a tradition in our immediate family to wait at the hospital for a birth. This would be Melanie and Joe’s first child.

“You take Lizzy out before we leave, and I’ll be waiting for you in the car!” I told Tom. I started the car and waited impatiently. I saw my husband walk out of the front door — but then out shot Lizzy and she was running down the street at great speed.

My husband ran after the dog, and I followed in my car. “Lizzy! Lizzy!” We shouted as fear filled our heart. We chased (追赶) her up and down our Bellwood Avenue. “She’s running onto Wireless Road!” We both screamed with fear. Lizzy dashed back and forth in the busy street. My husband kept up his chase on foot. I shouted to my husband, “Tom! Be careful when you cross the street!”

Within minutes, traffic was actually stopped on Wireless Road. A half-dozen good people got out of their cars to help. Soon, she ran into a safer area and then back to our street. With the help of six strangers, we caught her within a few anxious minutes. Everyone cheered, and we thanked the helpers again and again.

With Lizzy safely back inside, we drove straight to the hospital and were able to see our daughter in the delivery room. My husband and I are forever grateful to the strangers who might have saved Lizzy’s life and who enabled us to be there at the beginning of a precious new one.

1.Why was the author going to the hospital?

A.Because she was out of condition that day.

B.Because she was about to give birth.

C.Because her daughter’s first child was ill.

D.Because her grandchild was due pretty soon.

2.How did the author feel while Tom was running after the dog?

A.Impatient B.Concerned

C.Thankful D.Regretful

3.Where was the dog finally caught?

A.On Wireless Road. B.In a safer area.

C.On Bellwood Avenue. D.In the author’s car.

4.What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?

A.To show us how they got back their pet dog.

B.To express their sincere appreciation to the kind strangers.

C.To inform us how they managed to see their daughter in time.

D.To tell us what trouble their pet dog has caused them.

In Stressful Times, Make Stress Work for You

These are stressful times. Fortunately, we can actually use that stress to improve our health and well-being. Over a decade of research suggests that it’s not the type or amount of stress that determines its impact. 1..

Step 1: Acknowledge Your Stress

Labeling your stress consciously and deliberately moves neural activity from the amygdala — the center of emotion and fear — to the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for executive control and planning.

In other words, when we take a moment to acknowledge our stress, it moves us from operating from a fearful, reactive place to a position where we can be thoughtful and deliberate.

2..

Step 2: Own Your Stress

The next step is to welcome, or “own,” your stress. We only stress about things that we care about. 3.. If we deny or avoid our stress, we my actually be denying or disconnecting ourselves from the things we value and treasure most.

Step 3:4.

Connecting to the core values behind your stress sets you up for the third and most essential step: using or leveraging stress to achieve your goals and connect more deeply with the things that matter most.

Ask yourself: Are your typical responses in alignment with the values behind your stress? Think about how you might change your response to this stress to achieve your goals and your purpose.

There’s so much happening right now that we can’t control. 5.. Some psychologists argue that true transformative change can occur only during stress or crises. The trick is to channel your coronavirus stress as energy to make the most of this time.

A.Use Your Stress

B.Release Your Stress

C.By owning our stress, we connect to the positive motivation or personal value behind our stress.

D.But — as many people are noticing — there are also unprecedented opportunities.

E.Instead, it’s our mind-set about stress that matters most.

F.But later, we will be able to ask ourselves how we each responded to this crisis.

G.This step is also an opportunity to understand what’s at the heart of your personal stress or anxiety.

The moon may shine white above us most nights of the year, but how much do we know about Earth’s neighbor and what lies beneath its surface? Scientists are aiming to find out.

On Jan 3, 2019, China’s Chang’e 4 spacecraft landed on the far side of the moon – a first for humanity. It released a small probe (探测器), Yutu 2, or Jade Rabbit 2, which began to search beneath the moon’s surface using Lunar Penetrating Radar. These radio signals can reach 40 meters underground, three times the depth of the Chang’e 3 lunar probe launched in 2013 for the near side of the moon, China Daily reported.

In a study published in the journal Science Advances, researchers found that the lunar soil’s top layer on the far side of the moon was much thicker than expected – about 40 meters. Other scientists only expected about 6 millimeters of soil based on NASA observations during the Apollo moon landings, according to The New York Times.

“It’s a fine, dusty, sandy environment,” said one of the authors of the study, Elena Pettinelli, a physics and mathematics professor at Rome Tre University, Rome.

Yutu 2 is specifically exploring the Von Karman crater (大坑), a large hole that’s 180 kilometers wide and also the landing site of Chang’e 4. It’s part of an even larger, older crater spanning more than 1,770 kilometers.

“The subsurface at the Chang’e 4 landing site is very complex,” said Li Chunlai, a research professor and deputy director-general of National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Observations suggest that the subsurface material is totally different than the previous landing site of Chang’e 3, she said.

Radar waves revealed various layers beneath the moon’s surface: grainy (颗粒状的) material, boulders (岩石), and further layers of fine and coarse (粗糙的) particles. This information is helping scientists to gain new understanding of the moon’s history and formation, as well as volcanic activity and lunar impacts.

Yutu 2 is the longest-working rover (巡视器) on the moon, but it won’t last forever. China plans to launch the Chang’e 5 probe later this year, Xinhua News Agency reported. The spacecraft is expected to bring pieces of the moon back to Earth for closer study.

1.What can we learn about the Chang’e 4 probe?

A.It was the first to land on the moon’s near side.

B.It explored areas as wide as 1,770 kilometers.

C.It is three times as large as the Chang’e 3 lunar probe.

D.Its signals could reach 40 meters beneath the moon’s surface.

2.What does the lunar soil’s top layer on the moon’s far side look like, according to the text?

A.It looks like a large hole.

B.It is about 6 millimeters thick.

C.It goes farther down than expected.

D.It is covered by boulders and fine and coarse particles.

3.What is the Chang’e 5 probe expected to do?

A.Bring lunar samples back to the Earth B.Explore the Von Karman crater.

C.Replace Yutu 2 to explore the moon. D.Identify the moon’s various layers.

4.What is the text mainly about?

A.A history of Chinese lunar missions.

B.A report on the Chang’e 4 probe’s findings.

C.A comparison of the Chang’e 3 and 4 probes.

D.How Yutu 2 explored beneath the moon’s surface.

When French musical Mozart-L’opera Rock toured nine Chinese cities in the last two years, it drew a big crowd of fans, including Chen Yike, a 28-year-old resident of Hangzhou.

“It was the first French musical that I had ever seen,” Chen said. She was so captivated by the show that she saw the production two more times.

Chen is one of many young Chinese who are increasingly fueling the country’s performing arts market. More and more young people are investing time and money in live performances, such as concerts and plays.

According to a report released by the Lighthouse Research Institute and ticketing firm Damai on March 25, young Chinese accounted for a record 55 percent of consumers of performing arts ticket sales in 2019 and 72 percent of concert attendees were people born after 1990.

Xiaomi, a 25-year-old girl from Chongqing became a loyal fan of singer Hua Chenyu after she saw his concert at the National Stadium in Beijing in 2018. Last year, she and three of her friends even traveled to Hainan province to see one of his concerts.

“It has now become a way of life for young people to spend money on performances by their idols,” Zhang Yiwu, a professor at Peking University, told China Daily.

Apart from young audiences, Chinese young performers are also doing increasingly well in the domestic (国内的) market and show a great potential for indigenous (本土的) culture to build a stronghold (大本营).

For example, the 19-year-old Chinese singer-actor Jackson Yee (易烊千玺) featured as a coach on the reality show Street Dance of China (《这!就是街舞》). With more than 80 million followers on his Sina Weibo platform, Yee’s participation helped attract audiences to an otherwise less known art.

On the iQiYi’s The Big Band, many young bands got the opportunity to show their music, and some have become quite popular. As a result, music that would have remained underground is now in the spotlight. “Many young bands on the The Big Band inspire me to learn more about their stories and indie (独立制作的) music,” Yang Zixu, a fan of The Big Band, wrote on the Chinese Q&A platform Zhihu.

Thanks to the joint effort of young audiences and performers, there’s “a driving force for Chinese cultural and creative industries” and it also “indicates China has entered a higher stage of development with better economic and social foundations,” according to China Daily.

1.The underlined word “captivated” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by “______”.

A.confused B.fascinated

C.shocked D.disappointed

2.What is the main method the author used to develop arguments?

A.By using examples. B.By making a comparison.

C.By following the order of time. D.By analyzing the cause and effect.

3.How did Street Dance of China and The Big Band promote Chinese cultural and creative industries according to the text?

A.They allowed different works and forms of arts to gain more attention.

B.They offered young people a glimpse of new lifestyles.

C.They made audiences more willing to invest in live shows.

D.They drew talented followers to the coaches in the show.

4.What is the main idea of the text?

A.The popularity of live performances among young Chinese.

B.Changes in the ways that young Chinese performers attract audiences.

C.How young Chinese performers promote indigenous culture.

D.How young people have helped fuel Chinese cultural and creative industries.

We all want to be successful in our work. But what happens when our achievements come at the risk of losing important friendships? If your friends didn't receive what they were hoping for, your success could make them feel like they've been “left in the dust”. But does that mean that we shouldn't enjoy our achievements in case we displease someone or that we should feel sorry for being successful when others aren't?

Those of us who value friendships and close working relationships might feel embarrassed for achieving more than our friends. But we deserve our success, and nothing should take it away. Jealousy is only natural, but It’s often unreasonable, too. Your success is probably not connected with your friends' progress, so you shouldn't feel bad about achieving your goals. If your friends stay unfriendly, don’t be afraid to keep yourself away from them. You are not responsible for their weaknesses, and nor should they treat you sharply for furthering your work.

On the other hand, your friends may think highly of your recent success while hiding their real feelings. They could be jealous, angry or sad that they are not progressing at the same rate. So, be careful not to boast. It's a thin line between pride and self-importance, and by crossing the line, you may risk losing team support.

Next time you want to boast about your end-of-year win, or high-class new office, consider your listeners. Maybe your friends narrowly missed out on a position-raising, or experienced pay cuts which meant they didn't get what they were expecting. If your work is on a rising path, it doesn't mean that's the case for everyone.

Perhaps a step forward in your work has meant that you don't spend as much time with your friends as you used to. If you've changed a post or moved to a new office, take the time to stay in touch with old friends. Chances are that in the build-up to your success you've built strong relationships along the way. Don't let that hard work go to waste by losing touch with them.

1.From the first two paragraphs, it can be inferred that ________.
