It was in a hot summer holiday which I visited Qingdao, port city in Shandong Province. My favourite sport is swimming, so I decide to go swimming in the sea one afternoon with my friend, Wang Fei and Li Lei.

It was the first time that I had swum in the sea , with waves come one after another to the shore and making great noises. Facing the rough sea, I felt a bit worrying and nearly gave up at first. And when I saw many people enjoying myself in the water, my fear was reducing. At last I joined in the swimmers. Now I still remember what wonderful swimming in the sea was.

Tolerance means tolerating or pulling up with differences.

1.This concept means different things to different people, but it is when something is disagreeable  that tolerance is expected, and in more politically correct cultures, demanded.

There are many different ways to show tolerance. A person might fully disagree with other on any issue, while at the same respecting those with different opinions and treat them with dignity2..

One problem is the fact this respect is sometimes one-sided. 3., but some supporters feel reasonable in labeling those who disagree with hateful terms, and vice versa.People on both sides of an issue must be tolerant of each other.

4. ,It does not mean that a person has to accept actions or ideas that are against his or her values or beliefs. it means that each person agrees to respect the other's right to his or her feelings on the matter. When both parties have expressed their opinions, and it is obvious that neither is likely to change position, agreeing to disagree is often the ideal outcome.

Some degree of tolerance  is necessary in any civilized society.5..It goes against human nature. Putting up with differences is a virtue that requires honest effort on the part of every person. It takes time to develop.

A.Therefore, both parties should change their opinions if necessary.

B. It is widely accepted that tolerance is a critical step towards a peaceful world.

C.It refers to showing respect for the race, religion and opinions of other people.

D. Disagreement alone does not equal intolerance.

E. However, it is not realistic to believe that all people can achieve it completely on every issue.

F.Those who disagree with a particular issue must respect the opinions of those who support it.

G. When it comes to controversial issues, tolerance may also represent a let's  agree to disagree attitude.

It is quite apparent that competition surrounds every aspect of human life whether in the United States or the Amazon rainforest. Without it we would not have grown into primates (灵长类动物) . Or we would probably still be struggling to sharpen a bronze tool while crawling around on four legs in search of meat. Without competition, Columbus wouldn’t have discovered America and Edison would never have invented the light bulb.

Friendship, like all relationships between two people, involves competition. It isn’t competition in a traditional sense because there are no goals to be scored and no prize. Perhaps the ecological definition --- the simultaneous (同时) demand by two or more organisms for limited environmental resources, such as nutrinents, living space, or light --- better explains it.

As in nature, high school life is governed by a set of laws, similar to a shortened version of Darwin’s theory of evolution, overpopulation, and competition. There is an abundance of high school students and to distinguish them, ranking and categorizing (分类) take place. In high school, friendships learn to coexist with competition even though at times the relationship is rough. In fact, in some circumstance, competition is too much of a burden for a friendship to bear, causing it to fall apart. College admission is the final high school objective. Four years of hard work is to achieve good grades, and a student’s fate is determined not only by these achievements, but by the records of thousands of other seniors trying to achieve a similar recognition.

Nevertheless, by necessity, competition between students exists in all aspects of high school life. It sets and improves the standards in everything from sports to schoolwork. A healthy, friendly competition can have only benefits, but when it becomes too fierce, jealousy (妒忌) can tear friendships apart. Yet, despite all this, without competition, we would be lost.

1.What does the ecological definition mainly explain?

A.How to win the competition. B.What competition exactly is.

C.What the result of competition is. D.How friends compete with each other.

2.According to the writer, what causes the high school students to compete?

A.They know the laws of nature well. B.Friendship is a burden for them.

C.The number of them is too large. D.They are divided into different groups.

3.Which best describes the relationship of friendship and competition?

A.Friendship is always based on competition.

B.Competition is a result of lost friendship.

C.Competition is terribly harmful to friendships.

D.The degree of competition is vital to friendship.

4.What does the author think of “competition”?

A.Competition is certain to happen at school.

B.The result of competition are out of control.

C.Competition becomes fierce in high school.

D.Friendship is not as important as competition at school.

Sally Dawly is a woman from Auburn, California. Over the last three and a half years, the anti-littering woman has spent most of her free time picking up cigarette butts (烟头) from the streets of her home city.

Called the “Butt Lady” by her local community, Dawly began her mission to rid the streets of her city of cigarette butts in October, 2014. The woman looked for cigarette butts, picked them up and threw them in the trash. To keep a count of how many butts she picks up, the Butt Lady has been using a tablet, and earlier this month, she hit a historic milestone—one million cigarette butts.

“I got tired of going on my walks and seeing cigarette butts everywhere,” Sally Dawly said. “I’m just shocked that I had to pick up so many. I’ve ever picked up 3,000 butts in one day,” she said. “Don’t throw away your butts; better yet, stop smoking.”

With so many cigarette butts littering the streets, can one person’s efforts really make a difference? Surprisingly, the answer seems to be yes. Soon after the Butt Lady of Auburn started her mission and word of her efforts spread, cigarette cans started appearing around bars and restaurants in the city. Members of the local community even came out to cheer her on as she approached her one-million-butt milestone.

Sally knows her city’s cigarette butt littering problem won’t be solved anytime soon, but she hopes her work will inspire people to at least think twice before dropping cigarette butts in the streets. She has decided to continue cleaning up after irresponsible smokers, and already has a new milestone in her sights—two million cigarette butts.

Word of the Butt Lady’s efforts to keep the streets cigarette butt-free has reached neighboring communities as well, and CBS Sacramento reports that other cities have started seeking her help as well.

1.Why does Sally Dawly carry an iPad with her while picking up the butts?

A. To entertain the crowds.

B. To monitor the smokers.

C. To attract people’s attention.

D. To record the number of butts.

2.How did Sally Dawly feel when picking up cigarette butts?

A. Excited but upset. B. Shocked and sorry

C. Frightened but content. D. Astonished and desperate.

A. She picks up nearly 3,000 cigarette butts every day.

B. She will work in other cities in California in the future.

C. She has set a new goal of picking up two million cigarette butts.

D. She picked up one million cigarette butts with members of her community.

4.What is the text mainly about?

A. California’s “Butt Lady”.

B. Fighting against smoking.

C. Californians health problems.

D. Smoking problems in California.

I start every summer with the best of intentions:to attack one big book from the past, a classic that I was supposed to have read when young and ambitious. Often the pairings of books and settings have been purely accidental: "Moby Dick" on a three-day cross-country train trip: “The Magic Mountain” in a New England beachside cottage with no locks on the doors, no telephones or televisions in the rooms, and little to do beyond row on the salt pond. Attempting "The Man Without Qualities" on a return to Hawaii, my native state, however, was less fruitful: I made it through one and a quarter volumes (), then decided that I'd got the point and went swimming instead.

But this summer I find myself at a loss. I’m not quite interested in Balzac, say, or “Tristram Shandy.” There’s always War and Peace, which I've covered some distance several times, only to get bogged down in the "War" part, set it aside for a while, and realize that I have to start over from the beginning again, having forgotten everyone’s name and social rank. How appealing to simply fall back on a favorite-once more into “The Waves” or “Justine,” which feels almost like cheating, too exciting and too much fun to properly belong in serious literature.

And then there’s Stendhal’s “The Red and the Black,” which happens to be the name of my favorite cocktail (鸡尾酒) of the summer, created by Michael Cecconi at Savoy and BackForty. It is easy to drink, and knocking back three or four seems like such a delightful idea. Cecconi's theory: "I take whatever’s fresh at the green market and turn it into liquid." The result is a pure shot of afternoon in the park, making one feel cheerful and peaceful all at once, lying on uncut grass with eyes shut, sun beating through the lids...

1.What can we infer about the author from the first paragraph?

A. He has a cottage in New England.    B. He shows talents for literature.

C. He enjoys reading when traveling.    D. He admires a lot of great writers.

2.What do the underlined words "get bogged down" in paragraph 2 mean?

A. Get confused.    B. Be carried away.

C. Be interrupted.    D. Make no progress.

3.Why does the author say reading his favorite books feels like cheating?

A. He finishes them quickly.    B. He should read something serious.

C. He barely understands them.    D. He has read them many times before.

4.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. The Books of Summer    B. My Summer Holidays

C. To Read or Not to Read    D. It’s Never Too Late to Read

There’s one easy thing you can do every day to live longer and happier, according to a recent study, and it has nothing to do with diet, exercise, or cutting out bad habits.

A review of nearly 150 studies with more than 300,000 participants found that having active social circles decreases your chances of dying by 50 percent, regardless of age, gender or medical history. “When we’re social, we live longer.” Dr. Kelli Harding noted, “Loneliness is more of a risk factor to health than other known risk factors, like high blood pressure and obesity.”

The findings are written up in Dr. Harding’s new bookThe Rabbit Effect, which is about how kindness, rather than laughter, may be the best medicine. The book gets its title from a famous 1978 study of the relationship between cholesterol(胆固醇)and heart health in rabbits. Researchers accidentally discovered that those rabbits that received the most affection from their human handlers lived much longer than the others.

We live in a world where most of our social interactions happen through our phones. But to get the health benefits of a more active social circle, you don’t have to throw away your device and join a book club. More casual interactions with neighbors, shop owners, and others you meet every day can do the trick. Increasinglythose relationships can start online. That’s where Nextdoor comes in. The stated purpose of the company is “to cultivate a kinder world where everyone has a neighborhood they can depend on”.

When asked for advice on one thing you can do to live longer and happier, Dr. Harding said it perfectly, “Be kind. It’s actually pretty amazing how much each person can make the world a betterkinderhealthier place. It really takes very little and you never know the impact you have on somebody.”

1.What do we know about The Rabbit Effect?

A.Its title comes from a study. B.It's a report about heart health.

C.Laughter could cure diseases. D.Rabbits could help live longer.

2.What’s the purpose of Nextdoor?

A.To advocate online shopping to save time.

B.To offer the neighborhood sports facilities.

C.To settle the arguments among the families.

D.To create a harmonious community to rely on.

3.What does the underlined phrase “do the trick” in Paragraph 4 mean?

A.Improve health and wellness. B.Set up online relationships.

C.Build a happy and warm family. D.Keep away from bad habits.

4.What can be inferred from Dr. Harding’s words in the last paragraph?

A.We can look for a kind neighborhood.

B.We should be kind to animals in the wild.

C.Every small act of kindness can make a difference.

D.All kinds of social activities can make a better world.

Last semester in my final year of high school, I had a kind teacher whom I can never forget. I was not the best student when it came to writing tests. I had to work extra hard to get good marks, although I enjoyed learning. Anyway, this class that I truly enjoyed still had me struggling to do well on my tests. My teacher willingly helped me and was always willing to answer my questions, and I greatly appreciated it. He was a remarkable teacher, always reaching out to students and helping them achieve their greatest potential.

I remember the day of writing my final exam, I was the last one still writing in the exam room as always, reviewing my exam paper, while everyone else had already finished and left the room. After turning in my exam-paper, I started to leave the classroom, but decided to turn around and say what I had meant to say.

What I did right then was that I sincerely thanked my teacher for everything. What I said to him lastly meant a lot more to him than I thought it would —“I really enjoyed this class.” I did not think much about it. I was just being honest with him, but the look on his face was remarkable. He seemed really touched and appreciated my simple comment, just knowing that one of his students had truly enjoyed his class. That is what I call a simple, yet very meaningful act of kindness to brighten a teacher’s day, because they work so hard for us and truly inspire us to learn.

It is what we say and do to show concern to others that can make somebody else’s day extra special. I believe that a simple praise can mean a lot more than one can think.

3.Which words can describe the teacher?

A.Honest and kind. B.Kind and outstanding.

C.Special and patient. D.Skillful and clever.

4.What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.A teacher is always helping his students.

B.We should be honest with others.

C.We should appreciate others’ help.

D.A simple comment matters a lot to others.

And these peckish goats are doing us humans a favour — when they spit (for sometimes poo!) out the indigestible nut inside the argan fruit, the nuts can be collected to make an oil that’s used in hair products and food!

City Whales

They’re not visiting the Empire State Building — they’re on the lookout for food! Humpback whales are swimming back in the waters off the coast of New York City in the USA. Why? Years of cleanup efforts in the Hudson River — a tidal estuary where fresh and salt water meet — have brought back algae, zooplankton and fish. And the humpbacks, which are the ultimate foodie tourists, weren’t far behind! So far this year there have been an incredible 377 sightings.

Forest Penguins

Fiordland crested penguins prefer the warm waters and misty rainforest of southwest New Zealand to the icy Antarctic! With smaller bodies than many cold-weather penguins (such as emperors), the flightless birds live in balmy 21. And their eggs stay toasty in this warmer habitat, too, tucked away in caves, bushes and tree stumps where males sit on the nests.

Ocean Sloths

Pygmy three-toed sloths might be slow climbers, but when they get into the water, they’re powerful paddlers! These special sloths, which only live in the mangroves of a tiny island off the coast of Panama in Central America, plop into the sea when they want to move to a new tree. Their tummies are often filled with gas due to their leafy diet, so they stay afloat easily-and they can move three times faster in the water than they can on the ground. But since we’re talking about sloths, that’s really saying much!

Five Ways to Improve Communication Skills

Communication is one of the most important skills we can ever learn. It affects everything that we do —whether we’re communicating at work to meet deadlines and achieve results, or communicating with friends, family and partners to build strong relationships. Thus communication is very important. Here are five ways to improve your communication skills.

1.

This reflects a real lack of respect. By interrupting someone, what you’re basically saying is “I don’t care what you’re saying—what I have to say is more important”.

Don’t finish other people’s sentences.

2. Wrong. Research has shown by doing this you are dis-empowering (剥夺权利) the other person because you are taking control of the conversation, so bite your tongue!

Paraphrase.

If you want to show that you have really understood someone, then paraphrasing (解释) is a great tool.3. Here’s an example: “So Barney, what I’m hearing is that results are the number one objective for you right now and we need to find some fast solutions for you?”

4.

Focus on active listening instead of passive listening. The difference is that active listening means you engage with and respond to the other person based on what he/she has said, while passive listening is simply the act of listening with no response.

Maintain eye contact.

By looking at the other person in the eyes, you are proving that you’re interested in what he/she is saving.5.

A.All you do is repeat back to someone what he/she has just said, before you comment yourself.

B.You don’t see them interrupting others or leaving off mid conversation.

C.Listen actively.

D.This also keeps you focused (集中) and less distracted (分散).

E.Talk actively.

F.I used to do this a lot thinking I was helpfully finishing people’s sentences for them.

G.Never interrupt people.

Some people asked me how I could suggest the expenses of billions of dollars for a voyage to Mars, at a time when many children on this Earth are starving to death. I know that they do not expect an answer such as “ Oh, I did not know that there are children dying from hunger, but from now on I will stop any kind of space research until mankind has solved that problem! ”In fact, I have known of this long before.

But I firmly believe that by working for the space program we can make some contributions to the relief and eventual solution of such serious problems as poverty and hunger on the Earth. Two basic factors causing the poverty and hunger problems are the production of food and the distribution (分布) of food. In fact, large areas of land could be used far better if efficient methods of farming, fertilizer use, weather forecasting, field selection, planting, crop surveys, harvest planning and so on were applied. The best tool for the improvement of all these methods undoubtedly, is the artificial Earth satellite. Circling the globe at a high altitude, it can screen wide areas of land within a short time; it can observe and measure a large variety of factors indicating the status and condition of crops, soil, droughts, rainfall, snow cover, etc.

Besides, in the modern society, there is a continuing great need for new basic knowledge in the science if we wish to improve the conditions of human life on the Earth. We need more knowledge in physics and chemistry, in biology and physiology, and particularly in medicine to cope with  all these problems which threaten man’s life: hunger, disease, overpopulation, pollution of water and the environment. In a way, the space age not only holds out a mirror in which we can see ourselves, it also provides us with the technologies.

1.The passage is mainly discussing about        .

A.whether the children’s dying from hunger is the major problem

B.whether it is worth spending much money on the space research

C.whether the author’s suggestion has been taken into serious consideration

D.whether there is an effective way to avoid the global starvation

2.According to the author, what plays an important part in dealing with poverty and hunger?

A.Government support. B.Methods of farming.

C.Food supply. D.Modern technology.

3.The second paragraph is mainly developed by        .

A.making comparison B.giving explanation

C.offering advice D.giving examples

4.From the last paragraph, we can infer that        .

A.technologies can help to improve our living quality

B.more basic knowledge is required to be learned

C.we can live a more peaceful and happier life

D.there are different views on the space age

What do Tom Sawyer and Jumping Frogs have in common? Stories about both of them were created by one man: Mark Twain. When Twain was 4, his family moved to Hannibal, Missouri, lying on the west bank of the Mississippi. Twain grew up there and was attracted greatly with life along the river--the steamboats, the big wooden boats, and the people who worked on them.

The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County is one of Twain's best-loved short stories, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is one of his most famous novels. Both these works are celebrated by events held during National Tom Sawyer Days. There's also a fence-painting competition to see who can paint the fastest. The idea for this competition comes from a scene in Tom Sawyer, in which Tom has been told to paint the fence in front of the house he lives in. It's a beautiful day, and he would rather be doing anything else. As his friends walk by, he persuades them to paint with him for fun, and they all join in the "fun". By the end of the day, the fence has three coats of paint!

Although the story of Tom Sawyer is not true, it's based on fact. If you go to Hannibal, you'll see the white fence, which still stands at Twain's boyhood home.

1.National Tom Sawyer Days is ______.

A.a short story B.a great novel C.a celebration D.a competition

2.The fence-painting competition comes from _____.

A.Mark Twain's suggestion B.a story in Jumping Frog

C.the life of people in boats D.a scene in Tom Sawyer

3.From the white fence at Twain’s boyhood home, we know that ________.

A.the story of Tom Sawyer is based partly on Twain’s experiences.

B.the story of Tom Sawyer is based totally on Twain’s imagination

C.Twain’s old house is painted by the fence painting competitors

D.Twain’s old house is visited by people from all over the country

But that night Mark Twain slept well. Do you know why? That was because all the waiters in the hotel were driving the mosquitoes away for him during the whole night.

Artificial intelligence(AI)teachers can provide customized teaching for students to meet their unique requirements through analyzing data and deep learning. In the future, they may replace human teachers for basic teaching tasks.Since some students may find it and put new power into traditional teaching patterns. An educational system providing customized teaching centered on students represents the future trend of AI education.

China's AI education has developed rapidly in recent years with the rise of several thousand relevant companies.Currently,AI teachers are able to help students leamn pronunciation, analyze their condition, guide them to learn independently, and even grade writing assignments. Some foreign AI educational systems have been introduced into several domestic schools and have worked well on trial.

However, the promotion of AI education is still facing several difficulties in practice such as low technological levels, inadequacy of data and lack of funds.AI education still depends largely on human teachers' work. Most importantly,it conflicts with current educational patterns because the courses developed by foreign countries are not suitable for Chinese exam-oriented education.Teachers may also find it hard to change their original roles in classrooms since easing control on classes may make them seem irresponsible. These problems need to be handled before the mass promotion of Al education.

With AI teachers, the original teacher-centered classes will be transformed into student-centered ones where teachers only organize the class and provide guidance.Since teachers are supposed to not only equip students with knowledge but also shape their values and help them develop creative abilities,AI teachers will not replace human teachers but will only pose higher requirements of teaching.A combination of AI teachers and human ones can create the best future for Al education.
